/tg/ - Traditional Games

Welcome to Star Dust Quest! Here, you will follow the exploits of Gavin Ashworth and his small ship crew.

This is my first quest and the first thing like it that I've ever done. I'm not really from /tg/, but I hope you'll enjoy what I have to share.

As a new QM, I will try my best to consider everyone's input; I wish to be lenient. I would love it if people get involved and discuss in the threads, as well as provide feedback for me to learn as a QM. I aim to make this as enjoyable as possible and to work with you guys to make it happen.

Well, you've finally made it. After a long trip across the stars, you've arrived at the ever-popular Stardust Space Station; a massive 100 square-kilometre hunk of metal orbiting a deadbeat planet. Pirate and Federation goons alike abide by the station's cease-fire rules, and since the station is situated in quite literally the centre of civilized space, you can find all types of people here; a cute sushi chef is preparing her meals to your right while a pair of face-mask clad mercs pass you by. You, Gavin Ashworth, are here to start your galactic quest (whatever that is), and to do that you will need to prepare.

Though an inheritance from a distant family member, you found yourself the new owner of a small frigate-class space-faring ship named "The Feedbacker". While minimally equipped, she's surprisingly built well; she has a hard, sturdy hull backed with top-of-the-line engines. Oh, and you have 250,000 spending credits. You'll need that money to not only equip yourself and your ship for the journey to come, but to hire a crew.

Originating from within the Federation, you've just come fresh from the University of Rosette. What a coincidence that you enrolled in pilot school, minored in mechanics and computer sciences, and even took some combat-related courses. Your mom didn't really approve of it but you did it anyways, now look at you! Granted, you have no idea what you're getting into (being a wanna-be merc), but this has been your dream.

>Starting ability:
PASSIVE: Diplomacy
When it comes to negotiations, you can often talk your way through. You have a knack for diplomacy, and can settle arguments and disagreements between crew members fairly easily.

>Starting Equipment:
D23 Universal Smart-Ring
A thin aluminium bracelet that fits snuggly around your wrist that has universal capabilities. You can talk into it for comms, you can project holograms and images, you can browse the internet, manage your wallet...

Character Sheet: http://pastebin.com/bri1aWTK

Stardust Station is vast, but you like the atmosphere. As you sit at a table at an unassuming cafe fiddling with your smart-ring, many kinds of people you've never seen before bustle about. An armed girl wearing a red jacket--a merc?--enters a trinket store next door, and a guy--girl?--in heavy-looking power armour walks on by, his/her feet clanging against the metal floor. You can't help but feel a little intimidated, but you can't let that overcome you.

You can't help but feel a little intimidated, but you can't let that overcome you.

Looking back to your smart-ring, you bring up a small holo-screen to re-examine your assets; one hangar that's reserved specifically for you, containing your new ship. You've only seen it in person for a bit, but you couldn't help but get caught up in exploring the rest of the space station. At least you're armed.

You glance down to the holster on the side of your hip...

We've come to our first choice. Pick one of the three starting weapons.

The Bandit-12, stopping power at its finest. No fear of jamming and with a powerful ring to it... never a better gun to show you mean business. You never know what's out there, and you sure as hell would want it dead before it wants you dead. There's never too small of a calibre.

But you need to properly equip yourself, your ship, and get some crew members. Thankfully, that's what the 250,000 credits are for, and Stardust Station is bound to have more than everything you need. Things are even easier that they have a local intranet here for you to browse through for goods. Makes becoming a star ship captain much more convenient!

You bring up your smart-ring to look at the categories to browse through.

What will you look at first?

What better way to start than to see who's available? You suspect that you're going to be spending a lot of time with these people, so it's probably best you start with them. Maybe you can even get some input from more experienced individuals on what to do, next.

With your smart-ring, you bring up the catalog for hands, and sort them by the job that they're best at.

>Feel free to shout out names For now, I will compile a list of what seems reasonable choices from you guys and then make a confirmation post.

That doesn't leave us with much, but we can get more money. A crew is the meat and bones of our operation. We can get it all back. We could maybe lose ley'ra though. The only reason you guys want her is she's shy and cute.

>>

I am perfectly fine with the crew and would indeed like to hire them.
>>
>>39876898
I would say to get some weapons, then you should be good to take on some of the contracts for money.

I fucked up and forgot to mention the ammunition and supply store, but that isn't really an issue since your ship comes with some provisions already.

If you guys ever want to know more about the lore or see your inventory, feel free to consult your smart-ring! There is a lore database in your smart-ring, which I will update with more blips of information if you wish.

I'm probably breaking some sort of code by making suggestions, but there you have it. It was my fault for missing something.
>>
>>39876908
We will pay her in lifetime experience.

>This is how things work in the system, all the big name people in the industry started out working internships. The experience you get with this crew will last a lifetime, credits don't. You won't even have to pay rent!
>>
>>39876845
And with that, you send out the messages, taking your sweet time at the station cafe. In particular with your message to Bethany Parks, you mention that you have an internship opportunity for her. Hopefully she'll be able to work for free... you're already tight on money as it is, only having 50,000 credits left. Possibly 80,000.

Well, you have some time before you get any replies. What would you like to do now?

Contracts added to quests journal: “Courier” and “Hope”. Character sheet updated.

A few clicks on your holo-keyboard later, and you have two new contracts to fufil. Your first two. Both seem relatively simple, even if you believe you're a little underequipped for the Federation one... regardless, you have quite a healthy amount of credits to look for!

With the “Courier” contract accepted, you receive a message stating that the 2 tons of supplies are being sent to your ship hangar, now.

To your convenience, both contracts are in the same system, 8 jumps away. The Freeport station is a big contender for the Stardust Station, though it still doesn't come close to Stardust's sheer size. Perhaps you could outfit your ship there, as well.

It's about time you get to your ship hangar.

Finally getting up from your seat, you give yourself a good little stretch before heading out. Surprisingly, the hallways of the grand station seem to have emptied out a little bit, barring the odd person running to and fro.

After passing by an exotic-smelling food court, you find yourself waiting in front of an elevator... beside a girl clad in what seems to be standard-issued Federation medic gear. She hasn't noticed you yet.

You find your heart starting to race, this being the first of your crew members to meet. Somehow, you find it a bit more comfortable meeting one without the others; it's a bit more personal that way. After running a hand through your brown hair, it occurs to you that your new crew members don't exactly know what you look like.

Well, she's noticed your fidgeting. Fuck it.

“Hello,” you say in the most stoic voice you can say. Her blue eyes regard you with a strange twitch as you say this, however.

“Hi?” she greets back, tilting her head. You blink, slipping your hands into your pockets.

“Oh. Uh, are you by any chance, Bethany Parks?”

Her eyes squint in suspicion. “Who wants to know?”

“Oh... hahah, my name's Gavin. Gavin Ashworth.”

“Gavin? Gavin...” She trails off, her eyes wandering until they widen in realization. “Oh! You must be the captain of The Feedbacker?”

“That would be me.”

With that, the elevator dings and opens in front of the two of you, displaying an arrow pointing upwards.

“I suspect you're heading to the ship hangar?” you ask, gesturing towards the elevator. Gotta make an experienced captain vibe. 30,000 credits are on the line!

“W-yes. I am,” she answers, stepping into the elevator. You follow, pressing the button to take you to your hangar.

Now you're in the elevator with one of your new crew members, and it's the one you wanted to take as an intern, no less. What will you say?

The hum of the elevator overcomes the silence between you two as you wait for it to stop. What's one inexperienced person to say to another? Well, she doesn't really know that.

Perhaps it's best you get the internship thing out of the way.

“So, how do you like the thought of being a ship medic?” you ask, easing your voice through the mechanical elevator hum.

“Hm... it's quite exciting, actually. This will be my first time, and I honestly don't know what to expect,” she says, shuffling in her spot beside you.

“You've had training, though?”

“Of course. I just came from Scylla after graduating from the military med school, there.”

“Scylla? That's not too far from Freeport.”

“It isn't. I used to go to Freeport quite a lot in my time, there.”

“That might be valuable. For our first job, we're going to Freeport.”

Bethany nods her head, slightly. “Well... I'm glad to be of help.”

:”Of course, of course,” you chuckle, earning a small smirk from her. “Have you ever interned anywhere before?”

You visibly notice her blink at that. “No... this is my first time.”

Huh. That was easy. Looks like you've got your 30,000 credits back.

“I assure you, we'll take it slow.”

“Thank you.” She pauses. “Captain.”

You inwardly smile.

“Um, I don't have to pay for anything, do I?”

That makes you let out a hearty laugh. A nervous one, but a hearty one.

“No! Of course not. I'll take care of supplies and ensuring that you're comfortable in my ship for the duration of your stay.”

“Okay.”

Finally, the elevators come to a stop and you hear the heavy doors slide open for you. With Bethany following closely behind, you navigate through the dimply-lit blue metal hallways until you get to a door marked “Cen-6b”, the designation for your hangar. You've only been here once so far, and that was to check up on your ship.

Giving her one last glance (which she returns with a slight reassuring nod), you push the door open.

There, you see it. Little more than a hundred meters in length sits The Feedbacker, in her grey-white glory. Comprised mostly of Beatrice R&D subsystems, she can take quite a beating while maintaining a manoeuvrable navigation. Best part is that she comes with rare, powerful Talon engines. How your uncle got this is a mystery to you--perhaps you should read up on him.

It seems like some of your crew is standing in front of the open maw of your ship's entrance, its door deployed as a ramp to them. Doesn't look like they've entered yet.

There, you see one man wearing a full facemask, presumably Ivan Chesnikov or Viktor. Beside him is a rather beefy man with a giant mechanical arm, and beside him is a girl with fiery red hair sporting a red jacket. Most likely Troy Hall and Ley'ra Laur.

You gesture to Bethany to follow you, walking towards the group. With a giant room made of metal, your footsteps make fairly loud echoes against the walls and ceiling, alerting them to your presence. With the possibility of preemptive attack gone, you shrug to yourself.

As the group turns to face you, you come to a stop in front of them.

“Am I right to assume that you are all the people that accepted my offers?” you ask, regarding each of their stares (and the guy behind the facemask). The girl nods her head slightly, regarding you with a neutral expression while the guy with the mechanical arm nods his head slowly. The man in the facemask and dark-grey getup opens his arms in greeting..

“Friend! I am glad that you have come to me for work,” he exclaims with a slavic accent. “I am Ivan Chesnikov, and I am looking forward to being your pilot.”

You think you like this guy already. He gestures to the girl.

“This is Ley... Ley'ra Laur. She is of ship security profession.”

“Um, hello,” Ley'ra greets, waving meekly. She's wearing a dull red jacket on top of cargo camo pants and a grey undershirt. Slung over her back looks like a veritably stout assault rifle, and her body seems surprisingly toned. Expected from a soldier.

“And this,” Ivan says, catching your attention again. He gestures to the rather tall man, dwarfing the rest of you by nearly an entire head. “Is Troy Hall. I am of understandings that he is mechanic.”

“That I am,” Troy responds with a deep, baritone voice. “It's a pleasure to meet you, Captain Gavin Ashworth.” Notably, he extends his non-mechanical arm, which you meet with your own. Despite being of flesh, his grip is still tight, catching you off guard.

“Thank you, it's great to meet you all in person. I'm thrilled that you all accepted in such a timely matter,” you say, stepping back after shaking Troy's hand. All three of them nod. Turning your head, you gesture to the girl behind you, who finally steps forward. “This is Bethany Parks. She will be our ship medic, and I hope you can all accept that she's fairly new to the field.”

She gives a small wave and smile, but that doesn't stop Ivan's enthusiasm from driving him forward to shake her hand.

“It is always heart warming to bring new flesh into space-faring,” he says, stepping back. Yeah, you think you like this guy.

“Nice to meet you,” Troy says, stepping forward and shaking her hand himself. “Medics are always in demand. I'll take whatever we can get, to be honest.”

“Thank you,” she responds, blushing. Finally, Ley'ra steps forward and extends her own hand. However, you see a little strain on her smile.

“It's nice to meet you, Bethany,” Ley'ra says while shaking Bethany's hands.

“Thanks. I'm looking forward to getting to know you all,” Bethany says. Ley'ra says nothing more, electing to nod and smile before stepping back.

You clap your hands, rubbing them together. “Right! Now that our introductions have been met, where is the last guy?”

“You mean Viktor?” Ivan asks, looking back to the wide entrance to your ship. “Ah, he is inside right now. He has been moving the crates of supplies into the ship.”

“And that's the last one, comrade!” another voice pipes up from inside the ship. His voice is slightly higher pitched than Ivan's, but has a weaker accent. Looking up, you see another facemask-clad man stepping down the ramp. You think you see him smile behind his mask. “It looks like we have our crew!”

“You must be Viktor,” you say, smiling.

“Yes! And you are our new Captain. It is wonderful to meet you.” Viktor finally sets foot on the hangar floor, walking up to your group. Ley'ra moves aside to let him into your circle.

“You moved the supplies into the cargo, already?” you asked, looking around the hangar and noting that there doesn't seem to be any around.

“Yes, they are inside already. I thought I should get some exercise.”

“Okay. I know we just got together and all, but let's get going,” you say with enthusiasm. All of your crew members give you approving nods, turning around and walking into the ship. “I believe everything should be set up already. Our first task is not so daunting, and we have time before we arrive at the destination. Feel free to get settled in, everyone. I sort of just got this ship, so it's as new to me as it is to you all.”

After all of you have walked up the ramp, you grab the lever by the wide opening and pull it upwards. The entire ship shakes at this, the ramp beginning to raise before closing the opening in front of you and sealing itself, air-tight.

“What's the task for now, Captain?” Troy speaks up. As you turn around, you're met with the stares of all of your crew members. Thankfully, your piloting classes prepared you for this... somewhat.

“Alright,” you say, giving yourself a little shake. “Troy, you're the mechanic. You're going to be hanging around the engines for now. I assume you've got that covered?”

“That I do,” he says, nodding. “I've always wanted to work with Talon engines.”

“Good. Go get it fired up, we're going to get out of here as soon as possible.” As he walks off to the back of the ship, you turn to Ivan. “Ivan, you're going to be the main pilot of the ship. I trust you can fly this thing?”

“I have flown Beatrice vessels before. This will be of no problem, Captain.”

“Good. I'll meet you in the cockpit, then.” You turn to the last three crew members. “You three... just get familiarized with the ship. I want you to check weapon systems, Viktor. Bethany, there's an infirmary in the ship. Go see if it's adequate enough. And Ley'ra, we have a weapons room. There aren't any weapons there right now, but I want to know what we can put in there.”

“Yes, Captain,” Viktor says before walking off. Bethany and Ley'ra nod to you before walking off as well, but not before Ley'ra gives her what looks like an uncomfortable glance. You're not sure what to make of it, but you shrug it off for now.

“Once we're in space, we'll have a quick meeting and I'll detail all that's coming up!” you yell. Hopefully your crew heard. Oh well, it's not like it's too hard to find them on this ship.

With all of your crew to their tasks already, you make your way to the cockpit. Thankfully, there's quite a lot of arm room in the ship; this being an exploration-based vessel, it's well equipped to handle an excited team of explorers. Or adventurers.

Upon entering the cockpit, you're met with a hundred different buttons and switches. You thank your studies that it's not all too alien to you; you're pretty sure you could fly this thing on your own. Pretty sure. At least Ivan looks comfortable in his seat.

“Engines seem powered up, Captain,” Ivan says, noticing your entrance. You hold onto the back of his seat, peaking over his shoulder as he fiddles with the various switches.

“Great. Take us off as soon as you can, and feel free to get yourself familiar with the controls once we're in space. Then, take us to Freeport.”

He looks back to you. “Freeport?”

“Yup. That's where our first contract will take us.”

“If you do not mind me of asking, Captain, what is our task?”

“Eh...” You shake your head, making a weird face. “It's just a milk run. Delivering the supplies that Viktor brought in for us.”

Ivan nods. “It is always good to start slow.”

With that, the ship rocks as it frees itself from the hangar stabilizing arms.

So far, so smooth, Captain. The vessel's yours. Your crew is all probably occupied with their tasks right now, so you can't really call the meeting yet.

Steadily, Ivan takes the ship up from the hangar floor and brings it over to the air lock. Like any good pilot, he follows the light signals of the station that tells him where to go.

“You seem to know what you're doing, Ivan,” you say, your voice chipper.

“It would be bad if I did not know what to do, Captain.”

“Please, call me Gavin. Or Gav.”

“Very well... Gav. Gavin.” He pauses, the name not really rolling off his lips well. “Can I just call you comrade?”

“Hah!” you laugh, stepping back. “Why the hell not?”

“I call everyone comrade.”

You leave the cockpit and make your way to your quarters. As you move about, you start to feel really fortunate with your inheritance; the ship looks well taken care of, and it's really easy to navigate through with its lively-but-dim lighted interior. It already starts to feel like your new home.

Finally, you find yourself walking down the crew quarters. All 10 rooms are shut, none of your crew members having entered their rooms, yet. Down at the end of the hall, you find your door.

After sliding open the door to your room, you walk inside. You're met with a surprisingly spacious room, large enough to fit a king-sized bed, a desk, and have quite a large space between. An empty shelf sits beside the bed's right side, and a night stand flanks its left.
>>
>>39880732
You even have a mini fridge and a small table with two sofa chairs on either side.

Maybe it's a bit too excessive.

Regardless, you flop down onto the bed and bury your face into the pillows. Hell, Stardust Station was nice enough to clean everything while docked. Maybe that was part of the inheritance.

Freeport is 8 jumps away. That's going to be an hour and a half, at least, what with the traffic between jump gates. Especially for the areas around the Star Dust system.

>>39880969
You can't help but dismiss the uneasy looks that Ley'ra was having earlier. Concerned, you get up off your lazy ass from the overly-comfortable bed and head out of your room, aiming for the arsenal.

You know she came from the Luos Syndicate, and you know that the syndicate was recently... eradicated from their sovereignty by the Federation. You still don't know what to think of that, but you didn't really like to think about politics. All you know is that the Federation plays the Syndicate to be all no-good mischievous pirates.

Maybe you should have thought a little more before hiring crew members left and right. Alas, she looked nice enough from the few words you exchanged.

As you near the armory of the ship, you hear clicks. Like the clicks of someone fiddling with a gun. Cautiously, you approach the opened door, its wide frame pouring out white light into the dim hallway.

Quietly, you back up against the edge of the door frame, and then peak your head into the room. There, you see Ley'ra facing away from you while fiddling with her rifle on a table.

How do you approach her?
>You don't really want her to go frenzied on you. Maybe it's best you calmly approach her and announce your presence.

Calmly, you bring yourself around and into the room, making sure your footsteps are heard. Not too loud to sound angry, but casual enough to sound like you aren't trying to tread on eggshells. Regardless of your efforts, you see her gasp and jump slightly in her spot.

Curiously, Ley'ra turns to you, looking at you with wide, hazel eyes.

“Oh... hello, Captain,” Ley'ra greets, her voice voice smooth like rich coffee. It has a slight crack, but you think that compliments her modest demeanor.

“So, how goes the...” you take a look around the empty room (save for Ley'ra's disassembled rifle on the table). “Well, what kind of rifle is that?”

“Oh,” she says, her face suddenly brightening. “This is an EVI platform assault rifle. I customized it myself back when I was in the Cerberus Legion.”

“Cerberus Legion?” you ask, leaning on the table beside her.

“Mm... a private military corp in the Luos Syndicate.”

“Ah.” You turn to look at her rifle, noting its solid polymer make. “I'm not going to lie, I don't know much about the Syndicate.” Her face softens, threatening to frown. “N-not that I don't like you guys. I'm not really into politics, I just know that the Federation doesn't... doesn't see them eye-to-eye.”

She gives a pained exhale, but her lips curl into a slight smile anyways. “I... I'm not really into the politics, either. But the Legion was always one of the more ethical corporations in the Syndicate. We abandoned the place when the assault got bad, but we got mostly separated in the frenzy.”
>>
>>39881720
You take a deep breath in, sensing her uneasiness beside you. The last thing you need is tension on this ship. “I want you to know that there will be no hostilities towards each other in my ship.”

She bows her head down, her eyes taking up a hard-thinking look.

“We're all friends, here,” you say as calmly as you can.

“Yes, Captain,” she responds, her posture straight.

“Please, call me Gavin. Or Gav,” you say, looking her straight in the eyes.

“I... okay, Gavin,” she responds, seemingly taken aback. This girl looks like she will be a piece of work.

“Really, Ley'ra. Talk to me if you have anything you want to be open about, okay?” you reassure, giving her an encouraging nod and smile. A small breath escapes your nose when you see her posture loosen.

“I will, Gavin.” You think the small smile she gives you is finally genuine. “Thanks, Cap-oh, Gavin.”

With one last nod, you leave the room. Who next?

Yeah, maybe you REALLY shouldn't have skimped out on ship weapons.

Thankfully, the ship armory isn't too far from the gun deck, so you soon find yourself in a fairly tall room that seems to span the height of your ship. At the far side of the room is what looks to be a small compartment for somebody to fit through, and to your right is a rather large row of computer terminals. Outside of the compartment stands Viktor.

“Hello, Captain. I suppose you've come to check up on me?” he asks. You approach him with a smile on your face.

“Of course. How's it looking?” you ask, taking a curious look around the room. You're not really sure what to make of it.

“Well, we only have one weapon. Thankfully, it is an auto-cannon; very versatile, and one of my favourite to work with.”

“What can you do with it?”

He stops to think, holding a hand to his chin while looking up. “Eh... they are more for taking care of personnel and fast-moving targets nowadays, but I am pretty sure this thing could eat through even the toughest armour with enough focus fire.”

“That's reassuring to hear.”

“Still, I would not hold your breath if we have to take on anything larger than a frigate. I would put our survival on the Talon engines in the case of a destroyer or larger.”

You laugh, and Viktor shares a laugh with you. “I promise we'll get more for you to work with. I'm not too familiar with ship weaons, what do you suggest?”

He nods his head as he starts to pace the room.
>>
>>39882349
“Ah... as nice as they are, I am not of energy weapons. Don't get me wrong, they are good, but I prefer the hard punch of kinetic weapons. Were you to put me in charge with equipping a ship, I would put lots of artillery cannons and auto cannons, heh.”

“Thanks. I'll keep that in mind.” You turn to leave, but your curiosity draws you to turn back to Ivan. “I'm curious, what did you do before joining my crew?”

“Ah. Am I the first you came to ask that?” he points out with a (you think) grin behind his mask.

“No, actually. Still, I'd just like to get some background information of the people I'm with.”

“To put it simply, I was part of a mercenary group that kind of associated with the Blackhawk Elite. Not really, we were completely independent, but we focused on getting rid of bandits in systems where security was kind of a problem. I like artillery cannons because of how easily they tear apart duct-take ships of bandits.”

A laugh escapes your lips. “I'm glad to hear you're a righteous man, Viktor. Take care, I will call a meeting soon for a brief rundown on what's coming up.”

With that out of the way, you want to get to Freeport sooner to fufill Viktor's plight.

Who's next?

How did you find your way to the engine room? By following the noise, of course.

As the mechanical hum of the engines grew louder, the father you found yourself in the back of your ship. Finally, when the noise became loud enough for you to almost not hear your footsteps (Talon engines were surprisingly quiet compared to others), you found yourself in front of the open door to the engine room.

Sitting contently in a corner was Troy, a fascinated look washed over his face as he looked over the two large cylindrical objects that took up most of the room. Upon noticing your entrance, he sits up from the chair and walks over to you.

“Captain! Let's leave the room, it's much quieter outside,” he suggests, his deep voice easy to hear through the engine whir. Nodding, you follow him out of the room. Upon stepping into the hallway, you note at how much quieter it is than inside.

“So, how's it looking, chief?” you ask, leaning back against a wall. Troy leans against the wall opposite of you, brandishing his mechanical arm.

“Fascinating, Captain. I have only ever worked with such advanced machinery when working in Triglav vessels.”

“You worked for Triglav?”

“No... not exactly. I was part of a refueling and repair outpost in Fordella. Plenty of Federation ships came through there, many of them part of the higher end special operation branches.”

“Interesting. You seem very knowledgeable on ship hardware.”

:”Heh, trust me, Captain. Give me any piece 'o work you need done on this beauty of a ship, and I'll get it done for you. I almost want to work here for free.”

“Eheh,” you laugh nervously. “Dont give me ideas.”

“Hahah. Is there anything else you need, Captain?”

“Please, call me Gavin.”

Troy nods his head respectfully. For someone who looks like a brute, he's surprisingly gentle and well-mannered. “It's a pleasure, Gavin.”
>>
>>39882851
“Mm. Can you give me a rundown on what this ship is capable of?”

He inhales at your question and looks off to the side for a moment, seemingly coming to an answer just by looking at the ship's interior. “Very light frame. Beatrice always had movement and manoeuvrability in mind, and with some special alloys, their ships also pretty hardy. The Talon engines gives us more than enough thrust to outrun almost any vessel out there. We've also got a tractor beam and a teleport jammer generator to prevent teleporting boarding parties. Our passive shields could use an upgrade. Finally, there's a special Federation Navy Bulwark generator that can project a powerful, temporary shield towards a certain direction. Pretty sure that will save our lives more than once. I gotta say, Cap-Gav, whoever built this ship intended to have it be one hell of a luxory to be in.”

You smile and let out a small chuckle. “I can't say I disagree. I'm really going to look up to see who my Uncle really was.”

“When you find out, please tell me.”

“I certainly will.” With that, Troy walks back into the engine room.

One of the first things you want to stock up on upon getting to Freeport is medical supplies, if you need them. Hopefully, Bethany feels at home in the infirmary.

Speaking of, as you approach the infirmary, the halls seem to become more... sanitized. The smell of hospital interior reaches your nose, and you follow it until you see fairly bright light leaking out from a wide door frame.

Entering the room, you see Bethany looking into a cupboard at the opposite side of the room. Compared to all the rooms you just visited, the infirmary is surprisingly... small. Not terribly so, but cozy enough to fit one patient and one doctor. Off to the right of the room is the patient bed, coated with a disposable role of paper. To your delight (and perhaps Bethany's), the room looks fairly stocked.

Hearing your footsteps, Bethany turns and meets your curious gaze. “Welcome, Ca... Gavin.”

“Now you're getting it,” you remark, walking into the room. “How's it looking?”

“Actually, the room's pretty stocked. I'm pretty sure we have enough supplies to accommodate the...” She pauses to think. “Seven of us for quite awhile.”

“Well, that's good to hear.”

“Yup.”

“There's nothing else you need?”

A chuckle escapes her nostrils. “Actually, the condoms are expired.”

“Huh.”

“Yup.”

For a moment, you chew on your bottom lip, staring off towards the opposite wall. Taking a deep breath, you ask, “So, Scylla? What was it like?”

“Oh. Boring, actually. For us med students, it wasn't very different from university.”

“And where'd you go for university?”

“The University of Arcadia.”

“Huh, high standards. I'm from Rosette University.”

“Hah, really?” She crosses her arms. “We're always under the impression that you're all so snobbish.”

“And we're under the impression that you're all hippies.”

She rolls her eyes. “I can tell this is going to go well.”
>>
>>39883697
“Heh,” you chuckle, nodding to her. “Like I said before, I hope this will be adequate field experience for you.”

“I sure hope so. You all don't seem like a terrible bunch.”

“I can only hope so, too.”

Leaving her to her devices, you walk out of the room.

-

Back to the cockpit, you go. You like how the entire ship is pretty much one floor, where the cockpit is just slightly elevated above the rest after a small set of stairs. After entering, you still see Ivan in his chair, happily looking through the windshield at the endless sea of stars.

You're in space. And you feel your breath taken away.

“We are approaching our fourth jump, comrade,” Ivan's voice snaps you out of your stupor.

“Huh, already?” you ask, curiously. “I didn't feel anything.”

“It could be the gravity generator in ship. Beatrice ships are known to be very comfortable in.”

“Ah... good, Ivan. It looks like you have everything under control.” You take a seat next to him in the co-pilot's seat.

“Like I said, this is fairly easy. I am happy to be behind the wheel, again.”

You nod your head, adjusting yourself in your seat without taking your eyes off of the stars ahead. A giant circular ring looms in the distance, presumably the jump gate. It seems that you're in line to use it.

A bright flash of white light fills your vision before disappearing just as quickly. Blinking twice, you realize that a ship had just jumped the gate, slung through space and time at speeds many times faster than light.

“Heheh, it is why I wear the goggles, comrade,” Ivan chuckles next to you, seeing your plight.

“That's a good idea.” You take in a deep breath, feeling the ship accelerate forwards a bit before slowing down again. “What did you do before becoming a part of my crew?”
>>
>>39883722
“Ah,” Ivan says knowingly, turning to face you. “Is it the time of 'getting-to-know' your comrades? Hahahah!” You nod, rolling your eyes. “I was mercenary, mostly a pilot for escorting large hauler ships. It sounds boring, but it was a good time, being able to fly all I wanted. But dirty mana-harvesting company had to dissolve security group. Many of them went to other mercenary groups, some even named themselves Dustkeepers. I considered becoming one too, but I like driving ships. I hoped a Dustkeeper would hire me, but this is good in meantime.”

“Dustkeepers?” you ask, puzzled. Ivan turns to you again, and you think he quirks an eyebrow under his mask.

“You do not know of Dustkeepers? They are lone wolf of the galaxy. They brave the unknown to find and explore, to push our boundaries. Most of the more successful ones make fortune by finding old technology, like Herald or mana tech. Artifacts.”

“Huh... very interesting.” You take a few moments of silence staring out into space. You see the warp gate begin to power up, and before it can flash its blinding light again, you cover your eyes. After the light subsides, realize that you're next in line for the jump. “What if we became Dustkeepers?”

“Hah, as much as I would like to, you cannot just become one. It takes many years of experience and hanging around of other Dustkeepers.”

Carefully, Ivan lines up the ship in the centre of the giant metal ring. Blinking cyan lights around the circle begin to blink faster, and you soon find yourself staring into pure whiteness... which soon fades back to black, painted over with the canvas of stars.

Amazingly, you didn't feel or hear a thing as you warped. Maybe you should read on how it works, next time.

“Captain?” Ivan's voice says, sounding concerned. Looking over, you see him looking into a screen by his side.

“What is it, Ivan?”

He turns to you. “There is distress beacon coming from somewhere in this system.”
>>
>>39883746
You pause, looking at him before peering over his shoulder at the screen by his side. Sure enough, a signal seems to be permeating from somewhere.

“Where are we?”

“We are in...” He looks to another terminal. “System IXE-4NJ. Uninhabited, except for private space station by independent mining company.”

“Do you know where the SOS is coming from?”

He stares at the terminal a little longer. “I... think it is coming from previously unknown space structure. These are uncommon, but they do happen.”

“Hm... in your experience, what would you do?” you ask, learning forward from your chair. Suddenly, you feel like you have some sort of a responsibility in your hands. You're in command of a ship capable of many things.

“As patrol or escort ship, I always respond to distress signals. Bandits set up traps like this all the time, but is easy to detect. I do not see any bandit ships in the system.”

Freeport's only a few jumps away, but this anomaly has you intrigued. What will you do?

“Let's check it out. If there's something, then we'll decide on what to do from there,” you tell him, looking for the small microphone in the cockpit. Upon finding it, you raise it to your mouth. “Everyone, this is Gavin. I require you all to meet me in the... ship armory.”

Perhaps you could put that room to use as a temporary meeting room.

With the call sent out, you shoot Ivan one last look. “Stay here and bring us to a safe distance from the beacon. Keep your comms up, I'll talk with you through my smart-ring. Let me know if anything happens.”

“Alright, comrade.”

Getting up from your seat, you quickly make your way over to the arsenal. There, you see Ley'ra and Viktor already present, and your entrance is soon followed by Bethany. You enter the room, regarding all of their curious faces.

“Let's wait for Troy--”

At his name, the large man enters the room, twisting his body sideways to fit through the door.

“Captain? You called?”

You nod to all of them, gesturing them to surround one of the metal tables. Looks like Ley'ra reassembled her rifle; it's now clutched tightly in her hands.

“I did.” Raising your smart-ring, you speak into it. “Ivan, do you hear me?”

“I do, comrade,” his voice responds from the speakers in the ceiling of the room. “It is as I thought. It is previously unknown space structure... small, and is damaged.”

“Any hostilities?” you ask.

“...No, comrade. I only detect the structure.”

At that, the rest of your crew only quirks their eyebrows at you. You lean forward.
>>
>>39884390
“Okay... so, we heard a distress signal. As you heard Ivan just now, it's coming from some sort of unidentified space structure. We're going to see what we can do.”

Viktor and Troy exchange glances, and Ley'ra gives you a knowing nod. Raising the smart-ring to your mouth again, you speak, “Can you get a composition scan, Ivan?”

“No, we do not have that sort of scanner.”

“Can you stream a feed of what you're seeing to me?”

“Give me one second...” His voice goes silent, as does the room around you. After tapping your fingers on the metal table a few times, he speaks up again. “Okay, you should be getting it now.”

Raising your arm, you position your wrist so it's at the centre of the table. After a click on a hologram button, a holo-screen pops up, displaying a live video of what the front of your ship is seeing.

Approximately five kilometres away is what appears to be a small research outpost of some sort, constructed of sleek-looking metal. On one side, there seems to be a receiving bay for ships, definitely large enough to accommodate your frigate.

“Looks Federation made,” Troy remarks, squinting his eyes to look at it closely.

“It looks a little roughed up,” Bethany comments, leaning forward on the table.

“Ivan,” you speak loudly so he can hear. “Any other information you can give us?”

“Yes. Distress signal says life support in tact, structure is still no threat of depressurize and no air leaks.”

Nodding your head, you look up to the rest of your team.
>”We're going in. A secret, hidden research lab by the Federation needs our help? Why the hell not?”

”We're going in. A secret, hidden research lab by the Federation needs our help? Why the hell not?” Your crew exchanges shrugs, but none of them seem to object. "If you guys have any reservations or advice, I'd like hear it though."

For a moment, they're silent. However, to your surprise, Ley'ra speaks up.

“Who's going to go in?”

”This is a little iffy. I suppose I won't force any of you to come, but I'm going in. I would like at least some company, though. Is anyone not willing to come? I won't hold it against you.”

After another exchange of glances and shrugs, no one still seems to object.

“Right. Ivan, I'd like you to remain piloting the ship,” you say into your smart-ring.

“I will do that, comrade.”

“Anyone else have anything to say?” you ask, and Viktor steps forward.

“To my knowledge, Federation research stations are often equipped with internal security systems. Usually turrets, sometimes robots. Perhaps it is these that are malfunctioning,” he says, causing Bethany to step in as well.

“Could be people trapped inside. It's happened before where security systems do lock down after a malfunction of some sort--we had to do drills on Scylla on what to do if this happened. Always was just duck-and-cover, then wait for help.”

“I suppose that help is us,” you say.

You look to the rest of your crew. Who will you take?

“Ley'ra, you and I will be the front line. Troy, you'll hang back, and Beth--can I call you Beth?--you'll be on standby. Get ready to patch any of us up if anything happens.” Troy and Ley'ra nod.

“No, you can't call me Beth,” Bethany responds. “But yes, I'll be ready at the loading bay with first aid.”

After shrugging your shoulders, you look over to Viktor. “I want you in the ship. Have the auto-cannon ready, I want you to be our last resort.” At that, he nods, adjusting his hat.

“Alright Ivan, take us to the loading bay. We're going in.” Nodding to your crew members, everyone leaves to their respective duties.

After retrieving your rifle from your room, you walk down to the unloading bay of your ship. There, you meet Ley'ra, Troy, and Bethany, each of you wielding a weapon. Troy and Bethany only have pistols, but that should be good enough.

“Ivan, how's it looking?” you speak into your smart-ring.

“We are inside. It looks ordinary... light systems are malfunctioning, but there is still lights everywhere. There is no activity.” After a pause, you feel the ship begin to slow. “I am bringing ship down onto platform.”

“Thank you, Ivan. Keep the ship at idle, you never know if we need to escape quick.”

“I will, comrade.”

Finally, the large door-ramp emits a loud clang, hissing as the cabin depressurizes a bit. To your relief, you're met with a breathable atmosphere. After the ramp folds all the way down to the hangar floor, you shoulder your rifle and gesture to Ley'ra to follow close by. After walking up a bit, you see that the hangar is fairly small, seemingly only able to contain two of your ships.

The metal room displays only one exit, and that's through a set of double doors on the wall that you're facing. Dutifully, Ley'ra scans the room with her rifle pointed down her nose.

“Let me take the lead,” she whispers to you as you near the bottom of the ramp, Troy close behind you two.

“Alright, Ley'ra You can take point.”

She gives you a knowing nod before tactfully walking forward, gesturing you to follow. With the coast relatively clear, she quickly makes her way towards the double doors after jogging up a short flight of stairs. All the while, you stoutly follow close enough behind her so she's within arm's reach. You want to be able to pull her out of danger if it should arise. Troy follows behind you, but keeps his distance a little bit. His bulky figure would make it a little difficult to be stealthy, and he's only armed with a pistol.

Once at the doors, Ley'ra presses herself against the wall beside them, and you take your place beside her. She gives you a glance and you return a nod, allowing her to advance.

She steps on front of the door with a well-practiced stance, and then throws a kick with her right leg. The door easily gives in, and she immediately aims her rifle down the hall. After a moment of observation, she nods her head and walks forward, using two of her fingers to urge you to follow.

You find yourself slowly treading down an eerie, seemingly sanitized hallway. At around the middle, two more hallways connect to it in a cross. At the end of the hallway is another set of double doors.

The tension rises as the three of you advance slowly, accompanied by nothing but the soft taps of your shoes against the metal floor and the purr of some distant machinery. When you get to the halfway point of the hall, you look down the connecting halls in each direction, seeing that they both end in single doors. However, Ley'ra continues her advance down the mail hallway.

After a few more steps, she stops. She looks back to you, gesturing you to back up quietly. Apparently she's seen something.

That's when she starts to push against you, and you see a red light flash from down the hall

cont
>>
>>39885794
“Go!” she yells as a loud bang is heard. A bullet whooshes past the thee of you, and before another can be shot, Ley'ra shoves you and Troy down the side hall to your right, out of the turret's sight. She's surprisingly strong.

Having been pushed to the ground, you feel Troy's leg between your back and the floor. Ley'ra had collapsed onto your arm, but she rolls over to the side, panting hard.

“Shit... are you all okay?” you ask, sitting up.

“I'm fine,” Troy says from behind you. Ley'ra sits up and gives you a nod, seeing that she's unscathed.

Without hesitating, she gets up with a huff and presses herself up against the edge of the wall, her rifle held close. As you curiously stare at her, she very quickly pokes her head around the corner. Another loud bang is heard, and a projectile zooms by where her head had been.

If her skin wasn't pale already, then it was now.

“That's... that's a rail gun turret,” she says through her breaths.

“Damn. Now what?” you say, sliding up the wall beside her. Troy gets up as well.

“I have an idea,” she says, looking down the opposite hall.

“Yeah?”

“I will draw its fire by jumping across the main hall into the one opposite of here. When it's pointed away from you, use my rifle and shoot it.”

>Take her suggestion, it sounds like she's done this before. Surely, whatever the turret's guarding is what you're looking for.

“Can't we use something else as bait?” you ask. She gives you a dumb look before she starts to look at herself.

“Well, sometimes the turrets are heat-tracking. Not always, though. But, it's probably smarter if we use something else than me, first...” Trailing off, she unzips her red coat. “Here, take my rifle.”

You grab her rifle as requested, and she takes off her jacket, balling it up. After a hesitant moment, she flings her jacket into the hallway, flinching when the turret sends a bolt through it. She brings her jacket back to examine the new hole in it. You almost laugh at her frown.

“Okay... looks like it's a lot smarter to do that,” she says. “Can I have my rifle back?”

“Sure,” you respond, giving it to her.

Sighing to herself, she throws her jacket across the hall. When the turret shoots two bolts at the new target, she immediately slips out into the hall with her rifle pointed down it, letting loose three quick, successive shots.

“Done,” she says sheepishly, standing up to look at you.

You hesitantly peak your head from hiding to see that the turret is definitely not functioning anymore, pieces of it having fallen to the floor.

“Good job, Ley'ra. That's one hell of a long shot.”

A slight blush reaches her cheeks, but she turns away to face down the hall. “Thank you, Captain. Let's go,” she suggests, resuming her trek. You look back to Troy who's been silent the whole time.

“She's cute,” he says, bluntly.

“Yeah, well...” Deciding not to fully answer, you shrug and follow Ley'ra.

The rest of the walk is uneventful, and you soon find yourself in front of the next set of double doors. These doors seem to be much larger, but they open as you near them, anyways.
>>
>>39886404
The three of you enter a large, dark room. After Ley'ra checks that the coast is clear, you find yourself drawn to what looks like some sort of oval-shaped pod at the centre of the room. The pod seems large enough to be almost twice your height. Metal wires and tubes connect to it, and they all attach to the ceiling in a messy manner, going off to some other part in the facility.

The humming here is the loudest, and it's unlike anything you've ever heard of, before. You turn to your crew.

“What do you make of this?” You ask, but both of them give you a shrug. Feeling bold, you walk closer to the pod, coming to a s top in front of what seems to be some sort of control panel with a large, red button labeled “Open”.

Kind of surreal, if you say so yourself.

Screw it, buttons are too hard to resist.

You draw your revolver with your right hand, and while extending your left, you press the button. For a moment, nothing happens. But before you can react, loud a loud hissing noise fills the room, and a cold mist starts to leak from the creases in the metal of the pod. Your heart racing and you pace back a little bit, starting to believe that you probably shouldn't have done that.

You stop moving backwards when you get to Ley'ra and Troy, and to the awe of the three of you, the metal pod opens up like a flower. The mist clouds to the floors, washing past your ankles as it opens. You see Ley'ra shift a little at its cold touch, but she remains with you.

When the mist finally begins to clear, you see that in the centre of the pod is a pristine white chair of some sort. And on the chair is a... woman. Her skin is metallic--no, that's not her skin. She's wearing some strange metal armour, and her head is attached to some sort of contraption with wires.

And for a moment, the facility rumbles beneath your feet. The lights briefly flicker, and her eyes open.

Maybe you shouldn't have done that.

New contact: “Comet”

---

Thanks for playing my first Quest, everyone. This went a lot better than I expected, but I see lots of room for improvement. I'll try to correct that for next time.

I'll be back next weekend. I will try for Sunday. If anything, I will post in the next /wqt/ when it first comes up in Friday or Saturday.

Now, I must sleep. Take care.

I'll keep an eye out, just caught up and I'm liking this so far, hopefully we can get Comet to join our crew without murderizing any of us.

SDA, you really should get a twitter for this, I don't want to have to trawl the shitpit qtgs just to find news of this quest, so please get a twitter for this, they are much much more helpful and easier to use for making scheduling announcements and telling us when threads are live.
>>
>>39875890
Hey OP, if you want to give the crew slavs a more slav feel, I suggest altering the speech quirk: instead of adding "of" like in polandball comics, you could try using wrong tenses and omitting occasional uses of "have" and "be" verbs.
>>
>>39891663
I was going to make one last night but I had to rush the ending. I will definitely make one when I get home tonight and post it here if this thread's still alive.

Thank you, I'll keep that in mind. I should research it a bit more, actually.

It was a thing to at least give me an idea of when to start writing. It sounds like it isn't a good idea according to you guys though, so I'll remove that rule. It was really more of a suggestion to myself than a rule.

>It was a thing to at least give me an idea of when to start writing. It sounds like it isn't a good idea according to you guys though, so I'll remove that rule. It was really more of a suggestion to myself than a rule.
it can work when quests don't have many players, though that didn't seem an issue with this, and when you get more than 5 players it just causes issues.

You should set a time limit for voting you feel comfortable with, 15 minutes works well as a baseline, and announce when you're writing and with what vote when you do start, though feel free to give the players more time if there isn't many voting, or there isn't a clear consensus like when discussions are happening.

You seem to have a good head on your shoulders from what I've seen with this thread so keep up the good work, keep on learning and improving and having fun with us.

Regarding the archives, you can archive them yourself if you want, just remember to keep those two tags it has the same, so it gets sorted properly to show all this quests archives, though feel free to add more tags if you want.

First we needed Slavs. Then we needed waifus.
>>
OP, I know that you're trying to go for a Slav feel, but you do realize that real Slavs never said or used the word comrade, in any language?

General Slav grammar distinctions from English, using Russian:
>Russian has no "to be" verb
>Russian does not use tenses in that same way that English does, and a non-native speaker may almost never use perfect tenses (has/had/have)
>Russian does not have articles (the/a/an), so consider dropping those
>instead of "can you give her those flowers", a Russian speaker may say "can you her give those flowers"; it's similar to Spanish in that regard, whereby the direct or indirect pronouns often come before the verb
>Russians have an extremely extensive vocabulary of curse words (so much that there's a separate vocabulary, mat', for words that should not be spoken in public) and would probably use those fairly frequently in Russian
>Russian genders verbs, so one common mistake would be to add "-a" to past tense verbs when referring to women

Remember that in peaceful situations, speech quirks are less likely to come into play, while the more stressful a situation, the more they will.

If you need any assistance, I am Ukrainian and know a few Slavic languages, and I would be more than willing to look over things.
>>
>>39893147
>>instead of "can you give her those flowers", a Russian speaker may say "can you her give those flowers"; it's similar to Spanish in that regard, whereby the direct or indirect pronouns often come before the verb
That works when speaking russian, but when listening to that character speak english, does not work at all.

That's good advice for OP, if the characters were speaking slavic languages, but they are not, so having them speak english in broken syntax just reads stupid.
>>
>>39893174
Be careful when reading my post:
>Remember that in peaceful situations, speech quirks are less likely to come into play, while the more stressful a situation, the more they will.

I was showcasing a few different differences between the grammar of English and Russian as a generalized Slavic language, not telling him to use every single one of those quirks all of the time or anything of the sort.
>>
>>39893174
He was just pointing out the differences in the lingos. Obviously you don't need to push them all onto every slav character. It's just a minute, endearing piece of characterisation. You can have one character be more prone to committing these mistakes while having another one speak flawless english.

Okay, we fucked up big. Now we'll have to forget doing any business with the Feds, because they will want the girl. And we're not going to give her to them because we're good people. And they're going to send their spec-ops ships after us because she's very important for their spec-ops research. And we would probably go rogue and escape to some other factions' territory because we want to live. And the aforementioned faction would want the girl for themselves, because she's very important for their spec-ops research etc. etc. etc.

We're probably going to die.

Okay, I rebuilt our ship using my own calculations.

SDA fucked up acceleration calculations, it must be 14 (10 base +4 from Talon engines). Our maneuverability would be 16, not 13.

Also, we have nuclear fission reactor and no nuclear engineer to operate it, so it's instant death if something breaks.

Also, our relative was a pretty rich man, considering that our ship costs 60~ millions.
>>
Also, shouldn't we have 80k creds for persuading Beth to do it for free?
>>
>>39908518
>Also, we have nuclear fission reactor and no nuclear engineer to operate it, so it's instant death if something breaks.
I doubt the QM is running this full crunch, he seems to be going for a more narrative focused method, which is in my opinion, a lot better.
>>
>>39902240
>>39907845

He probably meant it was not used informally.
Over here we only used it when interacting with officials on formal basis, and the term itself accrued derogatory meaning, at least in common speech.
>>
>>39908120
Sounds like we'll need to lay low and/or make powerful friends.
