Your hive has expanded more and more in recent days, collecting loyal agents on alien worlds, and gathering more and more resources across your space. The locals of Raligha have slowly acclimated to the new state of affairs, and the news of your arrival has spread far and wide, especially in the wake of the attack by your rival.

On your own homeworld, your human clones have completed and are ready for deployment. They hold a mix of training and knowledge of human starships taken from the captured human explorers held in the depths of your hive, and are a capable crew of any human-made starship, such as your captured and repaired Clarke.

Even deep in human space your hive sinks its roots deep. Huron holds a growing hive deep beneath its waves, with your new hydrodynamic drones capable of speeding through the waters, and your infiltration of Gemini progresses with each day, with your hive tended by human hybrids in the automated depths of a protein recycling facility deep beneath the city streets.

Welcome back to Hive Queen Quest!

[Special project finished]

Amid the chaos of Religha, your drones have completed their experimentation on samples of the local plant known as Greystalk. After carefully examining its genetic data, you found a number of similarities to the black-leaf covered fruit bearing stalk the Gardener had used as an artificial food supply. The Greystalk itself appears to be the result of the engineered food source after having incorporated itself into the wild. By adjusting its genetic data, you have returned its color from its diluted dark grey to a mate black along the leaves, with the stalk a milky light grey. The dark leaves offer a far more efficient method of absorbing light, while the roots grow deep and wide enough to entangle each other, creating a network of shared resources, allowing only a few to need water or sunlight as the others share. In the wild, this was quickly lost due to being counter to the survival of each stalk, but in the care of a farm, it is quite useful.

The stalk itself offers two kinds of fruits, a layer of seeds embedded in the stalk, and a nutrient filled seedless fruit that grows among the leaves. The stalk itself is incredibly strong, and even its wild cousin is used as a high quality building material among the natives, and it needs to be to support the large, melon sized fruit rapidly produced by the engineered super-crop. The only down side is that it requires lots of open space and sunlight without foliage blocking the sun. Your understanding of the Gardener’s hive from your visions of it reveal that the Greystalk is highly adaptive and suited for hydroponic farm techniques. Your thinkers suspect that the newly formed lakes that have flooded the craters formed during the battle would be perfect build sites for these hydroponic platforms, and have proposed a design for the building.

>Hydroponic platform [must be built on or near water: cannot be built underground or in shade]
A floating greenhouse platform used to grow farmland through hydroponics. Each greenhouse platform supports roughly one hectare and requires a single worker to tend the crop and maintain the platform. Multiple platforms can be connected together to create fields of floating farmland.

You examine your pods as they drift through human space, cataloging their findings.

New Port
This system is the regional capital of the Union's forces in the expanse, and it seems to be among the most heavilly populated and developed. On the outskirts of the system is hydrogen gas giant Callahan, filled with the ice-covered moons and planetoids that failed to be planets in their own right, as well as a number of rings crisscrossing each other. A swarm of mining craft extract both water and gas from the area, gathering it into the maw of Callahan Station, which rests in a steady orbit above a number of floating gas mining platforms. You see a dozen civilian trade ships docked to it, as well as several military craft.

Further in there is a rich asteroid belt bristling with the activity of miners and trade ships. One area is incredibly active, and as your pod moves closer to examine you realize it is a city, carved into the rock. It is a bustling trade port, with plentiful radio signals indicating its name to be Bedrock. The city itself is within the asteroid, which is among the largest in the belt, and the entire object has been placed into a spin using a series of rockets built into the sides. At the axis of rotation there is a large starport, and your pods catches a glimpse of a hollow interior through layers of transparasteel and carefully balanced airlocks. On the outside of the crust, towers sprout from within, holding inverted platforms containing watch towers, defensive turrets, and viewing platforms.

Further in, there is a small world covered in military craft by the name of Darwin, its surface covered in some kind of multi-colored vine. Near the equator, a large area of many hundreds of kilometers has been burned away, and a small tether has been constructed running from the ground to a cruiser sized ship in low orbit. There is extensive military activity across the surface, and you see signs of forest fires across the area.

The system gives the first impression of a vast military base, and as you look through in more detail, you feel that's not an inaccurate assessment. The system itself consists of a binary system of two red giants, which twist and contort local gravity and sending any would-be planets into unstable orbits, slinging them away or dragging them into the stars themselves, as well as rendering your own G-field sensors ineffective. As the suns spin around each other, dangerously close and dangerously fast, you detect hints of twisting spacetime, and clusters of what look like giant, thousand kilometer long syringes mounted on massive thrusters and drive rings. It doesn't take long to put two and two together, and you realize these stars must hold at least some amount of Canderon, which the Union forces have been attempting to extract. The violent forces of the stars have clearly hampered that, as several of the star drills have been snapped in half, with others being repaired with scaffolding build around them.

Other then the fleet of defensive ships, of which there are many, with a capital fleet on patrol, you see a number of logistical stations built around the star, far enough to avoid the dangerous contortions of spacetime from the unstable orbits of the suns, which seem to almost act like a gravity drive, but on an astronomical scale, sending ripples of bent light and gravitational distortions out at random. Most of the stations are privately owned, but there are plenty of military platforms and mobile scaffolds providing field repairs to damaged ships and star drills.

You can see at leas two active drills, their drive rings shimmer brightly to help stabilize the area around as its far end contorts light into a small knot like a fist sized star, and plunges it into a sunspot. Plasma and radiation is expelled from the sides of the rig in hundred kilometer streams.

A small, wispy cloud of debris orbits this blue super giant star, which has ballooned to engulf most of the system. You see a number of stations set around the star at regular intervals, allowing for a constant view of any one direction. You see no active patrols, but there is an entire fleet of ships stationed among the docks, with at least five battleship sized craft among them and dozens of subcapitals. On occasion, small fleets unlock from the stations and enter warp, running along the boarder to Commonwealth space on long range patrols, and entire arrays of radio telescopes are trained on the distant nebula, where the stars of the Commonwealth shine through faintly.

As your pod enters the system, you almost instantly recognize the shape of a Unity server ship. It is split open, with pieces hanging from its slowly rotating corpse. The interior has been obliterated, likely to prevent capture, and the remaining hull has been colonized, with scaffolding slowly resealing the dead metal husk into what will soon be a new space city. It sits at the edge of the system, like a head on a stake.

Further inwards, you find the small gas giant of Billiard, more of a gaseous planet, really, but it is large enough to serve as a profitable source of fuel and water. It looks like a small, whitish blue marble in space, its clouds smooth and featureless from a distance. Small pockets of settlements drift in the winds on massive balloons, and a short tether from a station reaches into the upper limits of their reach, offering docks for the migrant cities as they mine the available gas and search for pockets of water.

Around the planet is another, smaller terrestrial planet. The beginnings of atmospheric generators are already in construction, and storm clouds swirl about the rocky and barren surface in response. Cities are lined up around the foundations of the generators, likely home to the engineers and construction crews, and little else.

Even from your outside view, you can tell this system is somewhat contested. It technically lies in Union space, but is also technically a part of the neutral Toliman system, making its status as sovereign Union space debatable. The system itself orbits Toliman at just under a light year, and the system is bombarded with stellar radiation from its neighbor, causing a faint but potent radioactive gas cloud that shrouds the system and obscures long range sensors when viewing from outside.

Inside this gas cloud is the Ticonderoga fleet depot, and expansive military listening post holding a large defensive fleet that patrols the boarders of Union space. A radio telescope looks to Toliman, practically a skip away.

Near the edge of the system you find a depleted asteroid belt, devoid of any detectable resources. further in you find two well-settled worlds with a breathable atmosphere.

New Dorchester, with a Population 4 Billion it is a moderatly populated planet, with several major cities spread across the surface, as well as a rural population of farmers and herders. It is a cold, but hospitable planet, with most of the native biosphere consisting of lichen and a moss-like grass that covers the humid and mildly temperate steppe lands along the equator, with imported pine and evergreen trees originated from Earth planted into widespread forests along the frigid areas of greater longitudes. Near the poles, volcanic activity increases, creating a large number of mountain ranges and alpine tundra regions dominated by major cities, which use the geothermal heat for industry and warmth. The planet is under the rule of a constitutional monarchy, with the leaders of each city electing a planetary governor from among themselves.

cont.

Further inwards you find the planet of Ephesus with a much smaller official population of 137 Million. A major trade port and economic powerhouse, it holds few people for its level of importance, using advanced industrial technology to provide for a greater degree of freedom for its people. It holds only one city of the same name, which is ruled as a republic. Those living beyond its walls are not counted, taxed, or regulated by local law. The planet itself is a hot world of coastal archipelagos and steaming deserts where thermal vents are common, sending boiling water shooting into the air. The industry and technology of the planet is extensive, utilizing automated technology that is often banned on other worlds, with multiple as yet unfounded accusations of the use of basic artificial intelligence. Most industry is operated by machines, with extensive automated networks operating most of the planet’s infrastructure, as well as most menial and physically laborious duties. A space elevator connects the city bellow to an orbital trade port, where an extensive military fleet is almost always present, recruiting the wild men from outside the city, and gathering refined materials and manufactured goods.

This system is bustling with settlements and colonies, with trade stations orbiting between them offering sublight freighters docking services as they move goods between the planets. On the outskirts of the system is a small, frozen ball of ice named Gorgona, with a population of under a hundred million, it is a small settlement kept aloft by water and mineral exports to the other planets in the system, which seem to have a less stable local environment that requires continuous adjustments to maintain a habitable biosphere. Solar sailors drift to and from the planet and the others. It is a corporate world, under the direct command of a local mining authority.

Further inward you find the rich and fertile world of New Athens, with a population of nearly six billion, all scattered among the many islands and floating arcologies. After further inspection, however, you find that according to their open broadcasts, the soil is naturally toxic, and the seas are not water, but a corrosive mixture of salt and naturally forming chemicals. Their carefully crafted local environment a product of imported minerals and liquid water.

Further in you find Thebes, a large planet with a heavy atmosphere. Most of its population of 700 million seems to live in orbital habitats, forming a broken ring of stations around the planet, connected to the surface be a space elevator. The surface is covered in flat lands and simple life that can survive the intense gravity. Orbiting Thebes is the smaller oceanic moon of Tempest, with shallow seas broken by rocky archipelagos, and an endless torrent of tidal waves battering the specially designed arcologies and bunker-like cities. It's population if 500 million is situated deep within the expansive mountains, safe from the kilometer waves and gale force hypercanes.

I've got a question.
Suppose we make a copy of a Queen, down to the atomic level. Will such a copy be a part of our network, or will it have its own?
>>
Lets clone up Lyle and Dylon corpses and use them in some sort of clever ruse.
>>
>>39881504
You mean a clone of the Queen?
It would just be another queen since it is it's own separate being and not just a drone.

You can't make a clone that isn't alive, by definition, so to make a corpse you have to clone them then kill them.
>>
>>39881661

>>
>>39881569
Not just a clone. A copy, that differs from the original by the identities of the constituent atoms, but nothing else.
Basically, what I'm looking for is what makes the queens *different*. Hopefully, if we can duplicate that part, we can make a second body for the Queen (sharing the same mind through the network) and send it somewhere very far away as a safekeeping mechanism.
>>
Since we have fleets which is basically packages of ships which have various purposes, could we get similar colony packages and use them to settle different worlds more automatically?

Ideas for different colony package themes:
Normal
Stealth (for when your settlement to not be detected)
Clones (for infiltration purposes)
Aquatic
Terraforming (with extra resources and others things for terraforming purposes)

Maybe it could work like modules. With a Basic module and then just attach whatever specializations you need.

This way we can get more colonizing done.
>>
>>39881728
So basically what you want is a non-sapient sleeve for the queen that is continuously connected to the Hive's psionic network so the Queen can upload her mind into it in an emergency?
You'll have to ask QD for that.
>>
>>39881345
You mean instruct them to cover bodies of water in greystalk farms so that they might make more pleasing tribute to the hive.

So that's why we created those lakes, truly we work in mysterious ways.
>>
>>39881747
That can be done by making purpose built colonization swarms in the wiki for those different niches.
Colonization is still slowed by the fact that we have to vote on it, which sometimes gets very contested, especially with establishing hives on human worlds.
>>
We should probably instruct the Ralighans that the large area around the mountain/Ark is sacred ground that they should refrain from tampering with the overhead foliage in.

We don't want someone looking down from orbit and seeing a ton of stuff clustered around that buried starship to tell them "yep that mountain is important."

The ways of the locals are strange, but your drones have studied their languages and customs. Your drones are fully capable of communicating with them by use of their trade dialect, a pattern of horn sounds made using local hollow trees. Your hive holds an artificial version, allowing you to make announcements to the population around your hive all at once, or you could ask to speak with a certain individual.

Say we need one person from each village far and wide. They will come to the temple and be baptised with Nepenthe, and brought inside to become our children.

By which I mean we implant parasites inside them secretly. Then they get given seeds, and on returning home can have visions that will instruct them on where and how to grow them.

>>

What is the actual point of implanting them with parasites? I don't see any benefit to it.

They pose no security threat, are fully capable of learning agriculture naturally over time, and we seek to teach them ostensibly out of generosity as there is no practical benefit to it since our workers are more efficient.

Unless you just want to enslave a race like the crystals do just for kicks.

Different anon here, who said anything about enslaving them? Their entire religious system revolves around attempting to attain a state of consciousness like that of our drones. Implanting them with parasites not only provides us with a means of communicating with their entire society seamlessly, but also of bringing about the shamanic state of mind they crave. Sounds like a win/win to me.
>>

Just because we're implanting them doesn't mean we're enslaving them.

They have no context to understand what they're agreeing to, and we know for a fact that the premise they hold as to our nature is inherently flawed such that the decisions they would come to are compromised.

Like, seriously guys, they don't know what they're getting into at all; this is exactly the same type of behaviour we criticized in the crystals, manipulating primitive species incapable of knowing better. Except our method here is -more- invasive.

"The people have fallen since the Hive has left. You will soon learn what you have lost."

The hive breaths between the sounds of the massive organ. The short, rapid blasts of their trade language mimic the beats of their drums.

"Send your leaders, of every village, so that they may learn."

The sound echoes over the endless jungle of blue flora, eventually met with the cries of distant animals, and then the sounds of celebration. You have your patrolling air drones watch them closely, as an elderly looking Ralighan exits a large hut and is draped with strips of cloth and bone jewelry. The many priests encircle him and paint designs on his body in rote repetition. The symbols are lifted from the glyphs of the hive ruins and the ark you have made your own hive, but the meaning seems lost to them.

The elders of the closest villages, three old and slow beings, some missing limbs, or with punctured drums, make their way to your hive. The mountain opens for them, the interior air flowing like the breath of a giant. They move in, slowly rolling like worn out tires, and the walls glow dimly for them.

They follow the glowing trail, and eventually enter an antechamber leading to the center of the hive, a massive domed area filled with the cocooned eggs and the crisscrossing supports of the ship in which you have built it. Light bounces from the gleaming hull like mirrors, creating a web of light above them. The supports are vast capillaries filled with nutrients, glowing vibrantly and casting their red light over the chamber's floor. Near the center, a wall flexes open, and your false queen emerges, like a mirror of yourself, flanked by workers and bone-like tubes and membrane drums.

They flatten themselves out as much as possible in a deep bow.

Yeah that's kind of the whole problem. We could also just pump them full of drugs 24/7 to make them happy regardless. That's not the point and you know it, dweebs.

The thing is, the coordination thing isn't a good argument. It's entirely irrelevant to us how productive they are, since they'll never be more productive than our drones. If our intention was to use them for our own benefit, the efficient option would be to wipe out their habitat and them and replace it with something more efficient.

I don't see why they can't be left largely to their own devices, but with an occasional -occasional- guiding push.
>>
>>39882609
Remember that the Union's behaviour included putting nukes in orbit, other than that their intentions to make other races economically dependant on them has worked out pretty well. Humans are at peace with pretty much all of the reasonable races.

Your workers operate the instruments, drumming out their language quickly and efficiently.

"Your people have lived here many years. How have your people fared?"

They each get up, adjusting themselves into a more upright posture as they inflate their drums.
"We have felt the wrath of the falling sky, which moved the land and brought the waters. It cleansed the land of the unclean tribes" one says, "and we have sent our crafters to make shrines on its shores!"

"The vines have burned at your fingers!" Another says. Your warrior patrols have removed much of the blighted areas once overgrown with Greenwall during your initial collection of samples. You found several remains of villages within. "We have returned, but the land is harsh in the wake of the green curse."

The last elder, the one from the village at the base of your hive, flips the bone charms in its hands. "We have gathered your offerings. The other tribes bow to you. Some have hesitated, but the wrath of the sky has shown them their ways were false. Should any still refuse you, we will take the offerings by force."

The others drum in agreement.

Your fake queen mirrors your thoughts and actions as you sit in your throne on Leeland. It clacks its mandibles. "Offerings must be given freely, not taken. It is not required to send the offerings, but they are welcomed." The elders seem shocked. They look to each other before responding.

You pause for a moment, your claw taping the stonework beneath you. That is... not what you meant, but you think you at least prevented any future crusades being done in your name, so close enough.

You bring out your workers, each carrying a bone jar of graystalk seeds. "Take these." You say. "Plant them beneath the sun, and water them. You will be taught how, and you will teach the others in turn." They begin to bow again, accepting the jars with reverence. As they leave, you see a crowd of locals gathered around the hive. The elders hold the jars above them.

"Gifts from the Mother of Builders!" They shout, and the crowd cheers.

As the villages continue to spread the word, your workers show by example and teach the basics of farming. Small sections around the villages are cleared of jungle and tilled into farmland, with your workers quickly clearing a small section to use as an example in only a few short hours, while the larger areas of planned farmland beyond are more slowly cleared by the locals, who stop periodically to admire your workers' efficiency in comparison.

You cannot see it from the top of your plateau, but you know there is an expansive forest of sea life bellow, glowing with bioluminescence. No longer are your drones limited to the cliff face, although you do have them avoid the open waters for safety.

They rocket forth and dive into the depths with unparalleled speed and agility granted by their newly adaptive forms. You note that there is no activity from the scavenging flocks of rays, who have scattered after consuming the last traces of meat from the bones of the leviathan carcass you had studied. Likewise, no other leviathan has been seen. You suspect the marks it has left along the cliff are a form of territory marking, and with it gone, the smaller fish had nothing to steal their meals from, and left to better pastures. The bones have already made the foundations for a quickly growing reef, however, and numerous small animals have laid their eggs in the expansive calcified fortress.

Please roll 1d100, best of 3 to scout the sea floor around the plateau.

Your drones quickly make the distance, racing along the rocky surface. It is not long until you find the subtle glow of the ocean floor. It is a dense jungle of strange life, and you detect all manner of odd sonic frequencies.

Large clustered mushrooms hang from the ground, held aloft by pockets of air in their caps as small fish flutter about. You watch with curiosity as hanging strands from the caps ensnare the passing fish as they patrol the waters around them, their movements powered by the current. There are several sharp clicks and scrapes, and you can see a small cluster of trout swim by, their fins slicing through the entangling strands. The school flees faster then the razor trout can follow, but they steal the captured fish and quickly eviscerate them, then move on.

You note that the mushroom shaped ballast stalks do not grow close enough for their tendrils to reach one another, with them separated by nearly a hundred meters. Between them, large shells of porous material are scattered about the sand, their forms hosts to a strange layer of hair-like growths that sway in the water. Large pillars of a stone-like substance stand still in the ground like trees, but within them you can see the pulsing movment of soft flesh. The trees pull themselves into the ground, and drift back up in rhythmic patterns, sending filtered sand and water shooting from vents near the top. At their roots, the sand pours inwards like a drain, shifting down as the shell pillars continue to breath.

It is not until the razor trout leave that you see any more animals. Fish-like beasts and other creatures that emerge from the sand or the bodies of stationary shell fish. A large crab-like animal with seven tentacles not unlike a Ceph, mixed with four long, slender armored legs emerges from the sand. You thought it a simple rock at first, but you realize its shell is like a massive conch, with long spear-like spines growing from the sides. It stands on its armored legs, nearly fifteen meters tall, and slowly drapes its tentacles along the ground, plucking up small shellfish and slow prey and sucking them into tiny mouths along the end of them. You follow the bulge of the meal up the trunk of each arm, and in time, an empty shell is expelled from the main body as small water jets stabilize the shell. It slowly strides past one of the ballast stalks, paying no mind to the strands that entangle its legs harmlessly. It rips several out as it continues to move.

After the first few leave, you see the ballast stir with movement, and then a swarm of multi-legged creatures march out of their shelter, zipping along the wire with their hooked legs with great speed. They quickly reach the lumbering, tentacled beast, and race along its shell. One finds an entrance, a small hole where an eye sits, and it squirts a jet of ink into the water like the flair. The rest swarm to it, and they begin eating into the exposed flesh. What's more, you note that the spider-like creatures drag the lines with them, tracing them into the beast's belly, spreading the load among the remaining threads. As its shell falls, the ballast contracts, reeling in the lines and dragging the goliath strider beneath it.

>>
>>39885836
You watch the spiders remove the flesh from the carcass, and the entangling threads reel in the meat into the bottom of the ballast. The stalk is slightly translucent, and you can see the chunks fall into the hollow trunk. Even before the shell is cleaned out, you see the sands around you shifting and moving. Another of the striders, slightly smaller, emerges. It discards its own shell, revealing a bulbous body that unravels like a cone shaped tail. It heaves, pulsing as it takes in water and inflates in size, then shrinks again as it exhales. Its tentacles whip out and drag the larger shell away as the spiders return to their shelter, climbing the ballast strands like circus acrobats, and the strider pulls itself inside. It sucks in water and fills in the extra space in its shell, and begins to move away, burying itself back in the sand some distance away where its head becomes one of the many rocks scattered across the ocean floor, which are all of similar design and shape.

Your drones continue on, and you find more pillars of filter feeders, arranged in a forest among more of the ballast stalks. A massive animal, larger then the leviathan even, drifts past you, caring little of your presence. Its mouth is held wide open, and you see layers of straw-like filters lining its jaw. In its shadow is a largely empty area of sand along a lower level then the rest of the area. Few rocks scattered far and wide mark where striders have died or discarded their shells, and the bones of fallen animals from higher depths are mixed among clustered colonies of fungal growths and the animals that feed on them. Your drones pass over the area as they patrol the region, and find a circular shaped patch of emptiness in the sand, where the grain tapers downward like a large cone.

There is a disturbance in the sand bellow, and a massive stalk of armored carapace bursts forth. A pedal of mandibles, like a flower of teeth, encloses around your drones. They fire their water jets and dash away as the jaws close around them with a crack of thunder, and the entire worm recedes bellow the sand, kicking up dust and debris into a cloud around it.

It was at least twenty meters long, or at least that was the size of what you was on the surface. As it settles, you take careful note of the edges of its mandibles, each with a small eye stalk on its end. It growls in frustration at its failed catch.

You send your drones back to the base of the plateau for now. Beyond the worm's layer, you can only see barren sand, with the silhouettes of striders far in the distance, and only the bones of gargantuan beasts breaking the foggy horizon.

Okay now that we have a full list of the systems in the human Expanse region.

Deckard's claim still looks like the only viable option. We want a planet, not a closed space station, so that it's easier to sneak on and off of it. And we want a decently sized population to hide among.

I suggested that like 20 threads ago I think, but I don't think it'll work out.

The opportunity we had to infect the Leeland monitor satellite was unique. Someone had deactivated the sensors with a legit security code.

So it had no reason or ability to report the signal it was getting before Theseus installed himself.

But a currently-active monitor satellite might not be that easy to corrupt. They're probably designed with that in mind after all. It might get out a tiny short message in the millisecond before Theseus takes over

You look over one of his many drones as Theseus dissects another of small swarm drone, quickly catalogs the components, then disposes of them after they no longer serve a use. He then grabs another drone and repeats the process.

"Have you discovered anything interesting?" You ask, more to see what he finds interesting then if he found something you are unaware of, as you have access to the vision of his cameras from the link in the Clarke.

"Yes. An entire industrial base, grown organically. Life has always been a kind of machine at the end of the day, but this takes it to another level. I greatly appreciate the chance to study them."

He rips apart another swarm drone with the practiced motion of a corn husker and tosses it away.

"This hostile queen uses kinetic weapons only, as well as chemical based maneuvering thrusters. Power is gained from the digestion of a carbon based fuel paste that feeds a distributed power system. Power is stored in a remarkable organ that serves as a kind of capacitor running along the spine of the ships." He says "spine" with emphasis, as he uses the word literally. "The power then flows through an incredibly advanced nervous system that utilizes super-conducting fluids held in layers of vacuum, allowing for the ship to store energy using chemical and fusion reactors and then storing it for use in battle later. It is some of the most advanced samples of biomechanical engineering ever seen to exist."

"But have you found anything interesting?" You repeat. Theseus pauses for a moment.

"It is... still alive. As you said, it was not introduced to any organic matter... on purpose, but small samples were permitted to exist for a short period before drones were able to locate it on the surface of the planet bellow. It had spread an unusual substance around it."

He sends you the image. Black ooze slowly pours over the ground around the chunk of hull as roots grow to embrace nearby trees and plants. The corpse of an animal sinks into the pit of miasma as the flesh beneath it withers away. Small pillars of ooze climb into the air, forming into chitinous stalks that sway in the air.

A moment later the view is obstructed by a blinding flash and thunderous roar as a pillar of superheated plasma incinerates the site and everything in a six kilometer radius. A moment later the screen is replaced with the mild red glow of a field of molten glass.

"The material seems to react to any compound that can be incorporated into itself, meaning any form of organic material, however, inorganic matter composed of similar elements is digested as well. This was discovered at an old testing area made of bio-degradable buildings. Please disregard the architecture and layout of the testing area."

You see another short video, this time an abandoned city street. Damaged air cars and crashed land vehicles are scattered about, and the buildings and roads alike are riddled with craters and bullet holes. There is a fire down the street where a crashed chunk of a battleship smolders and oozes like melting wax, covering the small city street in a jam-like substance. A building collapses as its supports are eaten away, and the road is quickly burned through, with roots shooting into the soil beneath. Near the center, growing like tumors on the shattered hull fragment are rows of small bulbs of something.

Again, there is a blinding flash as the site is bombarded from orbit, soon replaced with a field of glass.

"No debris that spent more then six hours without contact with organic material has shown these abilities. Only fresh matter of decent size triggers this effect. Most of the material burnt during reentry, but there were at least four such infection zones detected. All bombarded, with the site and all surroundings in a six kilometer radius sterilized as per quarantine procedures."

You think for a moment. Your own hive creep spreads of its own accord, and is highly aggressive, but the behavior of this is different, and you can think of no way for a dead ship to cause such a reaction.

"That is interesting, yes."

You set aside a number of thinkers for the task and a shuttle takes the sample to a separate lab that is quickly constructed to house it. With any luck, you will soon have a deeper understanding of the Obsidian Queen's hive structure.

You have your patrols move to look for any contaminants, but you are a queen, you know the dangers that can ensue from leaving the corpses of rival queens around. Most of the enemy fleet had burned up during reentry, what was left was incinerated on impact. Only small chunks of the battleship made it to the surface, and they were quickly targeted and removed along with the remaining ground forces that had converged on their locations. After some time spent looking for any infections, you feel pleased to find none, but you keep your drones on high alert in the suspect areas.

You realize, almost with horror, that you have no pressing matters left to do. You flutter your wings in satisfaction and idly shift the piles of eggs in your throne room.

No, Heretic did not. Heretic provides invaluable close to mid range naval support with his ships, but to the best of our knowledge hasn't offered any boarding/counter boarding units that could fight WITHIN a server ship. Boarding is exactly the sort of warfare the Hive excels at before everyone else, and that was what allowed the OQ to track the server ships back to 0-1 during her battle with Theseus. She pulled that off by embeding an advanced relay within the hull of one of his larger vessels, which allowed her to instantly track the location of it back to the planet. Hive warriors would be better equipped than any other to prevent that from happening again.

You turn your attention to Elizabeth, who is elbow deep in the oozing mire of... something. Your workers have dissected the relay and sorted through the pieces, leaving several interesting organs as unknown in purpose or function. She has focused her efforts on those remaining components. She feels your attention and responds mentally.

"Yes?"

"Technology of the rival queen seems capable of digesting organic matter. The mother queen's own technology may have similar fail-safes." You say. She pulls out a small bladder with a number of crystalline protrusions and focuses her thoughts on it. It echoes the thoughts, like a mirror's reflection.

"I doubt it. Your drones were very thorough with their search of dangerous materials." She says verbally to the room as a worker passes by to take several discarded kidneys and dump them into a protein vat. "But I do think I am very close to understanding this device. It is quite remarkable, and the biomechanical nature of it has thrown me off, but I have quite a few medical degrees, and-"
The bladder pings a burst of thought. Elizabeth twitches from the unexpected signal.
"There, you see? Clearly this is some manner of amplifier. I'm sure you can analyze its genetic code while I look through its physical structure."

Furthermore, QD specifically stated on multiple occasions that our hive warriors are arguably the best out of all the factions forces for boarding action and inter ship assaults.
>>

No, it's a completely different process.

What you need to copy is the Earthlings. This isn't implantation tech tree, which would allow them to transmit tachyons. What the humans duplicated is the manipulation of alien life, Psionic Sensitivity tech tree.

The product of overexposure to tachyons.

It should be noted that Theseus was not technically boarded, but rammed. The fore section of a ship containing an advanced relay embedded itself into the hull of the server ship, which Heretic removed using intense short ranged weapons fire.

As for the server ships themselves, they do hold automated drones capable of close combat, so his ships are not helpless against boarding.

During the first Battle of Raligha against auntie Gardener.
I wonder how she managed to use the jammer unaffected there but when she faced off against Mom over Reprieve, the OQ was vulnerable to Mom's jammer. Maybe she wasn't expecting it to work?

>>39888739
You're thinking of the Scavengers, which are a completely different species
>>

"It should be noted that artifacts of skyl origin have been found in the expanse. They seem to pertain to their own psioic research." You say. She pauses for a moment, a small collection of fatty tissue plopping to the floor. A worker quickly cleans it up.

"Really? May I see the samples? I would love to see what limits they were able to achieve in their time as a free culture." She claps her hands together, sending bits of gore splashing over her apron.

"They are currently unavailable." You say. "They seem to be in Union custody." She steps back from the table and nearly trips. A worker moves to catch her and he quickly gets back to her feet.

"We can't let them study something like that!" She says, almost in a panic. "Do you know where they have them? If you have knowledge of its location, we could send something to retrieve it perhaps. Are they being transported? We could raid the ship maybe, pass it off as a Ceph attack?"

"They are held in Union space." You say simply. You watch as thoughts of bureaucracy and red tape leaks from her mind, countless conversations of weapon applications and military viability to justify any research expenditure.

"Do you know how useful these artifacts are, or how much they know about this technology?"

Of course, if we did nab an advanced relay in the vice of a psionic jammer, OQ could order it to self destruct.

But if we start jamming the network first, the relay will never be able to receive that order.

Their names and backstories aren't really relevant though, just the fact that they only ever had one successful subject, and kept recruiting new ones.
>>
>Are they being transported? We could raid the ship maybe, pass it off as a Ceph attack?"
Well I had an awful idea.

We can't really disguise as void cutters, but, worst idea ever:

Both we and the Ceph's masters have a common goal of keeping psionics out of the human race's hands. If we told them somehow, the timing of the moving of the artifacts from Gemini to Gemini Beta...

Awful idea. And we wouldn't even know how to contact them. And we'd give away our location, if the OQ hasn't reported to her masters. Forget I said anything.
>>
>>39889043
Informing her about the experiments and lab is already mentioning Yune. Specifically mentioning Lee is not required. Their advances into this field are pretty primitive since they have an old version of the artifact. She herself is a better example to base her research on.
>>
>>39889131
Meh. I wasn't saying to draw attention to it. Just say it in passing to give her an idea of what they where doing. We don't even have to mention the name. Though mentioning him at all isn't that important anyways, so whatever.
>>
>>39889131
For the record we have no idea what the other artifacts are. We saw ONE artifact.

Which was from the Skyl's own research exactly like the humans, trying to reverse engineer psionics.

We don't know if the others are any more advanced than that, like being based on actually already understanding psionics already.
>>
>>39888865
You send several files regarding the laboratory, and a news article showing its destruction.
"Did you do that?" She says, turning to a worker if only to have something to focus on during the conversation. It looks back, almost nervously. "That's good. They need all the setbacks we can give them." She brings her hands up in frustration, splattering her hair with blood, and shouting an arnimian curse. "Why is it that any time a government agency finds something important, they try to figure out how to kill people with it?" She pulls off her gloves and places them on the table, the worker frozen still, unsure if it should stay or continue its cleaning of the room.

"There were a number of experiments. They seemed interested in the weapon the Commonwealth built, but were unable to reproduce it." You say. She nods.

"That's good news, but what about psionics in general?" She says, picking at the growth on her head. The vein has since grown, and begun protruding from the skin. A small patch of a chitinous spine has begun to emerge. She flakes off bits of dead skin with her fingernails.

"They have made numerous attempts, with several successes in using the artifacts to make humans sensitive to psionic signals, but they lack the capacity to transmit. One such subject is the Ryan Lee. He has escaped and is under hive protection."

cont.
>>
>>39889175
She flicks the patch of dead skin to the floor, and the worker reaches out and grabs it before quickly scurrying to a nutrient vat. "More good news, although I fear what they did to him." She gets back up from her seat and puts her gloves back on before returning to the relay's remains. "I think I'll be done with this quite soon, and I'm already an expert in psychology, so I should be able to learn enough to figure out what they did, exactly. Who is he, anyway?" You send images of news coverage, and the memories of his time on Leeland. She gives a quick nod.

"Ah, I see. never had a chance to see the news. There's usually nothing of interest going on, but it seems the one time I end up working in an alien hive there happens to be a major news week." She shrugs, then plunges her hands back into the relay. "Are you bringing him here?"

Between what Gilliam knows and what you know, you can safely say that the relics are the remains of Skyl attempts at unlocking the secrets of psionics themselves. The doctor was informed of them when he was assigned to the Path research lab, and he did not find them himself, nor does he know their source. While none of the artifacts he has seen hold anything of value to you, beyond knowing the limits of their research, you have no way of knowing if any more advanced devices exist where they found them.

How about we finally schedule a survey, colonization, and smart mines of the Waystation planet?
>>
>>39889639
How about we colonize the systems already under our control first, like Wonder, or Farcast? We've still got a garrison of some 20,000 warriors and thousands of colossi on that planet, you know.
>>
>>39889614
What's a "variable strike weapon"?

http://pastebin.com/z4yZdEbK

Dillon had plasma-coated ammo, micro-rockets, and magnetized bore that zoomed in on the guard's armored helmets. I don't think we have those.

Do we need to buy some research samples on the black market to duplicate those?
>>

The mole was working for Michael, and was attempting to make contact with the organisations that Lee had been in contact with in his past. They were attempting to test how much he was in contact with them, as either an actual agent or the more likely scenario of simply taking part in online government leak hi-jinks, but with his growing public profile, Michael was convinced the fake Lee could manage to find out details about those organizations.

Lee's apartment building was condemned because it deemed structurally unsound. It was a rather old building, in a somewhat low end part of town.

You have no idea about the last bit though. Only that it has something to due with the recent king bill.

>>39889695
They may offer research options if you get them in the hands of your drones to tinker with. And "variable strike" is a copyrighted term owned by the arms manufacturers that built the hand rifle to indicate that it can switch from one ammunition type to another mid-combat.

It's patented, with a money-back guarantee!

Okay one limiting factor of our hybrid infiltrators on Gemini is that they all need to buy fake IDs.

But they don't have any credits.

Oh, wait you're talking about the exoplanet? What sort of colonization efforts are you talking about, it's stone cold dead world. I mean, there's a shit ton of scrap metal there if you want to scavenge it, which I can get behind if you want to set up mines there.

Just what planet did you think "Waystation planet" meant?

To Space Amazon then!

How does selling on Space eBay/Amazon work? Who's responsible for final delivery to the customer, the seller or the bank? Does the seller just drop it off with the Valen?

>>39889782
Maybe he was thinking about Drift?

Some anon was talking earlier about colonizing Drift and some other worlds south of the cradle. Didn't realize we gave the exoplanet in the nebulae a name already, my mistake.

We didn't give it a name. It was always named that, from the very moment it first appeared in the thread and on the map.

In fact it was named before it appeared. By the Engram.

>>
HYBRID CULT MANAGEMENT WHEN
>>
>>39889893
Talgo is such a shithole.

I had inferred Lee was from Ockham though. When was he on Ockham that he thinks he should have stayed there? He was living on Gemini.
>>
>>39889903
Talgo is like space Florida. A bible belt world where old people spend their days on their orange farms and try and wrap their heads around these chinese cartoons their young'uns are so fond of.

So it's fairly pleasant place to live I suppose, if you can get used to all the space mosquitos and constant humidity.
>>
>>39889903
There are worst places to live. It was settled mostly by the American south during the bout of religious persecution on Earth, so it's one of the few places where organized religion is still common.

As for Ockham, you are unsure. Maybe he was couch surfing at the time?

>>39889942
Actually, this is a decently accurate description of the place.
>>
>>39889893
Theseus made it sound like the two Internets weren't connected at all, between Union and Commonwealth.

Do people not have any FTLComms connecting a Union world to a Commonwealth world?
>>
>>39889977
Not officially, but there are probably a few that exist between the leadership of individual planets and private third parties in the Union, or more likely, among the Valen. They would not be connected to any official Commonwealth network, however.
>>
>>39889977
Anon, internets are barely connected between individual planets. The problem with human FTLComms are the high cost of manufacture and limited bandwidth, so nothing like what we're currently surfing right now is even possible between different systems within either state.
>>
Crunch wise.

>lay 100 parasites
Put those inside the new hybrids for the healing factor.

And give the Clarke a cosmetic makeover, install human-style energy shields on it again that burned off when it crashed.
>>
>>39890036
1. Redundant.
2. Not a bad idea.
>>
>>39890035
Yeah, but Union worlds at least have those costly, inefficient connections to each other officially.

Maybe internet isn't the right word then, since each planet has its own. internetnet?
>>
>>39890049
>1. Redundant.

Healing. Factor.

Which is only possible with a parasite.
>>
>>39890035
Correct. Local internet connections would be quite similar to what we have today, but with far higher speeds, while connections to other planets and systems would be more akin to the dawn of the internet, with only email, text, and the occasional DOS game.

Only instead of being tricked into deleting critical files, you run the risk of downloading a sapient program that data mines your computer and uses it to post on anonymous image boards.

>>
>>39890072

QD, do you think we could vote for a mass colonization effort of multiple worlds? It seems pretty unanimous to me that we want to start spreading our holdings, we just can't seem to settle on where to start.

Could we just pick several planets and have them colonized automatically?
>>
>>39890072
So photosynthetic cells mentioned buildings as well as space stations.

Could we just cover an area with infrastructure creep as nutrient making solar panels, on a planet that gets sunlight like Farcast?
>>
>>39890113
It's like they've come full circle.
>>

>a sapient program that data mines your computer and uses it to post on anonymous image boards.
Constantly shilling his A N O N T 4 L K honeypot no doubt.
>>
>>39890100
Your tech expert could indeed forge an ID, had he the hardware to do so. As it is, you would need to break into a store to access the needed equipment.

As for Theseus, he is the best at hacking. He hacks with the same simple ease with which you command your drones. He is not totally invincible at it, but all of the methods of defending against him are based on prevention, or fixing it after the fact. He's what you would get if someone from a 90s action movie could actually hack when he slaps the keyboard and looks at 3d special effects whiz by, and was put up against a regular guy that could code.

>>39890141
Yes, you could. I thought about pricing such a building, but thought that since it would be dark half the time, it would simply be inferior to the orbital version.

>>39890116
Sure. Apart from active patrols, I consider the population of your worlds to be in flux, as drones are moved by trade ship to where they are needed.
>>
>>39890141
>>39890188
Speaking of photosynthetic cells, can't we engineer our creep to have a layer of those cells on top to generate nutrients from sunlight?
If feasible, we can cover an entire planet with our creep and at the same time generate nutrients.
>>
>>39890188

Are we still capable of doing a vote tonight? Cause I'd like to vote on taking advantage of all the bloodroot trees that exist.
>>
>>39890188
...Can the Engineer build the hardware from raw materials like he can guns?

Though maybe quantum mechanics are beyond a sewer hobbyist's dream.
>>
>>39890188
Do you think we could vote on doing something like we did with Raligha, such as send down a thinker to oversee efforts to mine and build up the hive on our behalf? I think we're all getting pretty eager to expand our official territory beyond the three worlds we currently hold.
>>
>>39890188
I would also like to vote (in favor) of beginning auto-colonization of a number of worlds. Its past time we start expanding our holdings.
>>
>>39890188
Vote for Weather Spire if we are voting now.
>>
>>39890223
We're already doing all that's practical, aside from Waystation.

Farcast is already being surveyed, which has to be done first.

A-295 has a non-disabled monitor satellite that is not easily hacked.

Which reminds me.
>>39890188
Shouldn't the pastebin list pods at Koenig and A-295? They were never withdrawn from there.
>>
Anons, we don't just need more hives on other worlds, what we need is more hives that can produce nutrients and metals and ships as soon as possible.
While numerous worlds in the expanse are habitable and rich in resources, the problem is that they're already claimed by humans, which will not make resource production economically productive if the humans find out and send their military to contest us.
So instead of focusing on laying discreet hives in the human-occupied worlds, we need to focus our expansion south towards more unclaimed worlds and those that formerly belonged to Mother. These will allow us quickly harvest their resources and build pylons which we are in dire need with minimum fuss outside of Scavenger scout parties.
>>
>>39890273
We could be building up our industrial base and mining efforts in Wonder, like we have in M-323.
>>
>>39890206
It wouldn't generate much, since the creep is spread among many different uses, but yes. With a bit of research into the fine-tuning of the genetics involved, you could have your hive creep offer a passive income, if it covered enough of the landscape.

>>39890221
He can build guns using equipment found in the hive, but for something like an ID, which needs to look human, and not be covered in mucus and have eyes all over it, he would need human made tools to make one. If he wanted to make a gun that looked human in design, he would also need to get gunsmith tools, which would actually be more difficult then making an ID, as Gemini has rather strict gun laws.

>>39890234
>>39890211
Sure thing, feel free to give proposals.

>>39890273
I'll try to look it over tomorrow after work.
>>
>>39890302
I am fully in agreement. This is what I'm talking about when I say we should send a thinker to establish a new hive on one of these such worlds on our behalf.
>>
>>39890315
Ok, if we're giving proposals right now I'd like to establish a mining and manufacturing base in Wonder like we have in M-323, as well as sending a thinker to Farcast to hasten the survey and begin building a hive as soon as feasibly possible.
>>
>>39890308
At the moment however M-323 is not saturated.

Whether we create more mining corvettes there or in a new system doesn't make a difference if the increase in income is the same.

Since M-323 is almost pure, already refined metal, not ores, it might even be the only place we want to focus mining corvettes, until we vacuum it all up and have to move on to the next field.

It doesn't look like there's much to mine in Wonder though is there?
>>
>>39890315
How were the Builder's warriors still not-comatose in Wonder?

>>

>>39890362
The Builder's dock facility is several dozen kilometers of refined metal waiting to be recycled.
>>
>>39890405
>>39890405
Which we can't until we loot the research inside it, which will take a while to explore. A long while.
>>
>>39890315
Can we not make biological versions of the normal human tools that just produce the appropriate materials via excretion/secretion sans eyes?

Or is Fabricate Human Industry via Biomechanical Means a research topic we need to introduce?
>>
>>39890315
If we capture enemy Thinkers, putting them in a bio-tank allows us to read everything they know, right? Just like non-hive life?

Would they have any defense?
>>
>>39890315
I'd like to vote on taking advantage of all the bloodroot trees that exist.
>>
>>39890416
Just increase the number of drones assigned to make it faster, maybe even deploy jammers to render the Builder's drone's nonfunctional

Besides, we can always start with the ruined Hiveships sitting outside.
>>
>>39890362
The rate at which the consumption beam and the mining craft that use them suck up metal are determined by the quality of the metal or ore. Whether they're harvesting asteroids of dead spacecraft don't make much of a difference to them.
>>
>>39890315
>>39890431
May as well support this since it's a negligible use of our dronepower
>>
Lay
>100 parasites

>>
>>39890315
Vote to infect the Monitor satellite in A-295 with Theseus and send drones to the Frozen ice planet and Cracked barren planet in Wellbuilt.
>>
>>39890457
Exactly. Quality of already-refined metal is always higher than natural-found ore in meteors.
>>
>>39890420
More like an incredibly inconvenient aspect.

Not only do you think it looks better covered in eyes and chitin, you can do it that way faster, cheaper, and more effectively. Humans shape metal by melting it, cutting it, and bending it, you shape metal by chemically dissolving it into a malleable and then forming it like silly puddy, then removing the nano-machine/chemical compounds to leave the metal behind. No seams, no bolts, no welds, to sprues.

Going through the process of making it look human made would make it a much longer and difficult process.

>>39890426
They would have a defense against attempts at experimentation or tampering, as they hold a hive's genetic secrets. You would need to roll to gather reliable data, and depending on how paranoid the queen was, the thinker may have a seizure or suffer self-inflicted neurological damage to prevent you from probing its mind.

Also, it looks like there is support for starting to harvest the Bloodroot trees.
>>
>>39890513
If there's enough support for harvesting blood root trees, isn't there enough to start auto colonizing efforts? If you aren't going to start that tonight, could we vote for it at the start of the next thread?
>>
>>39890513
>and depending on how paranoid the queen was, the thinker may have a seizure or suffer self-inflicted neurological damage to prevent you from probing its mind.

Would attaching a parasite to the thinker to force it to cocoon and convert into one of ours be similarly risky?
>>
>>39890534
Adding support for auto-colonization.
>>
>>39890534
Sure, although there's less consensus as to how and where.

>>39890564
Very much so. That would be the ultimate trigger of the "oh shit" alarm.
>>
>>39890605
>Would attaching a parasite to the thinker to force it to cocoon and convert into one of ours be similarly risky?
Would this actually work though?
>>
>>39890625
Nope. See:
>That would be the ultimate trigger of the "oh shit" alarm.
>>
>>39890625
About as well as using a pod, I suppose. The thinker would likely attempt to destroy its own memories to avoid capture, or self destruct if it's able. There would be a chance of recovering useful data, though.

Queens of the past have gone through endless cycles of invention to prevent other queens from tampering with their drones, so while messing with alien DNA is like hop-scotch, doing much of anything with a drone of another hive would be incredibly difficult, as it has millions of years of genetic engineering dedicated to preventing you from doing just that.

On the up side, the Obsidian Queen would have the same problems if she tried to mess with your drones.
>>
>>39890605
I think we're all for sending a thinker to Farcast. If the survey is not yet concluded, it can do whatever necessary to speed it up, and begin construction of a proper hive the moment it's done.

I think we can all agree in establishing a mining operation and small hive on Waystation as well.

Less certain is building replicating our industrial model in M-323 in the Wonder system (100 pylons and a large number of mining corvettes), perhaps if we got a consensus here now we could start that.

This look acceptable to everyone?
>>
>>39890669
Looks acceptable to me.
>>
>>39890669
Farcast should be totally surveyed by the end of next thread, actually. Not just the surface, but the endless tunnels beneath as well.
