>Introduction:

You are Katja Hartkern, Martial Artist, competitor in the latest King of Fighters tournament for "The Women's Team", and right now you're starting to think that anybody who ever said that it's easy dealing with "Journalists" and photographers were full of shit.

"Just a press conference at Wellington Memorial Stadium" King told you. "Maybe a quick photo-op" she said. Yeah right; You became the center of attention the moment you rolled up to the "Player's" parking lot on your motorcycle, the press sticking cameras and microphones to your helmet before you had even had a chance to park your 'bike and take the bloody thing off. Fortunately, the security guards back them up long enough for you to gget your bearings and offer up a quick smile, flashbulbs going off as you're reminded of something your mom once said about how "A photo can steal your soul", or something...

On one hand, you're kind of glad that there's attention towards you and your friend's efforts in "The Infinite Match". On the other, you wish that they were a little bit more conscious of the fact that you could beat the holy spirit out every single one of them... And once again, that "Dark" kind of side slips into your mind as you arrive at the stadium's "Press Room", logos and banners that look like they got copy-and-pasted from the official website adorning the wall behind you.

"No Yuri or King...?" you ponder as you're lead up to the center of a large platform, a long table in front of you wired with three stationary microphones. A couple of techs get the mics and cameras ready, some feedback checks and a couple of "FOCUS!" calls leading to the cameras rolling, feeling uneasy about how or even what to do before your friends get here...

A couple of nervous seconds pass as you aren't quite sure what to do. Part of you wonders why was it felt easy talking to reporters the first time it came up and what feels different this time around. Is it the room? The fact that they got a hold of you the first time around instead of you going to them? Why the hell was this shit called up anyway when a phone interview could've worked just fine?

"Fuck it" you think, tapping the microphone just in case there's anything wrong before starting to speak. "Hey there... I'dunno where my 'mates are right now, but I can answer a couple'o'questions before they arrive if that's alright."

You look see the press corps stand up and start waiving their hands, a cross between over-anxious schoolchildren and scenes you've seen mocking church-goers as more flash bulbs go off. Eventually, you spot an older-looking man with glasses and pick him to ask your first question.

>"Benson Hurst from the Tribune. There are a lot of rumors going on around you and your past... My principal question though, is when did you finally decide to come out as a Woman?"

Oh fuck this shit. Really? REALLY? THAT is how this is going to go? First question right off the bat and it's striking a nerve raw enough you can practically feel the knife stabbing it...

>A. Honestly try to answer the such a "Loaded" question, going into detail about the struggle you've had with your own identity as a person, let alone your body...

>B. Stare him down with a mean glare and simply say "No Comment." (Roll 1d20 for the power of your "Strayan' Stare")

>D. Go full "Straya Cunt" on these poor fools; Lay out all of the crap you've had to deal with in the last 5-6 Months to get here and why the guy who asked this question has no idea what the hell he's talking about.

You can feel you blood boiling at this guy's question, staring at him with a mean glare while trying to hide how badly you want to chew him out over it.

He doesn't even flinch at your "Strayan' Stare" and you sigh out "No Comment", then look around and take the question from a girl your recognize from when these hacks followed you to that old gas station out in the middle of nowhere.

>"Do you have any plans for further endorsement deals outside of your work for Fantastique La Femme? And will you pose for her fall line?"

OK, here we go. "Actually, yes to both. I can't really talk about the big deal I'm workin' on right, but I wouldn't mind modelling for Shermie in the future."

A couple guys stand down, but most of the press are up and still looking for a few answers. You see another girl with thick glasses and take her query, with still no sign of Yuri or King...

>"What do you feel about the shameless display of sexuality most women in these tournaments show off and what would you do to change that?"

Huh... Two out of Three on the sex front. Looks like the corps are serious about either painting you into a corner/turning you into a spokesperson for something you don't want to be involved with, or this is an actual "Issue" that they HAVE to have your opinion on...

"To be honest, I don't really care what the other fighters in this thing wear, or even what my opponent has on; I just want to win."

You get a couple of nods and a chuckle or two at how earnest you sound, but the girl with glasses doesn't seem amused at your reply.

>"So you're in favor of women getting turned into commodities and parading around in next-to-nothing?"

Ah... THERE's the angle she was looking for. You take a pause, then reply "Now see, I'm not in favor of something like that at all. There shouldn't be a pressure, or an expectation for a girl in this tournament to walk around stark naked in pasties, or whatever."

>"What about "The Gorgeous Team?" All three of them walk around in tissue paper they decided to call "Clothing"."

"Well, in that case two of the three're contracted to a Wrestling Company, right? So it's not like they've got a say in what they can wear, or even what kind of moves they use in a fight. For Mai Shiranui... Honestly, I think she wears what she wears because it makes HER feel empowering. Not the crowd watching her fight, not the person she's fighting, just her."

You take a glass of water and clear your throat before you continue your rebuttal, cameras and recorders at the ready. "Besides, I can see a guy like Shen Woo or that boxer Python walk around without shirts on, but no one complains. It's almost expected of them to show off their abs'n'arms..."

The girl with the glasses starts to say something, but stops as you get a few more nods and smirk at your point, a couple of women in crowds cheering for you. You're about to take another question when you spot Yuri & King off to your left, the cameras flashing up again.

"What took ya'?" you ask them as they get seated and situated next to you at the table.

"Long story" is all King says as their mics are readied. Judging from both her and Yuri's body language, it seems like that they got into a fight with somebody on the way over here or something...

Surprisingly, the rest of the conference went pretty smoothly after Yuri & King showed up. You hung back and let the spotlight rest on them for the remainder of the whole thing, only answering a couple of "Soft-Ball" questions from a pretty knowledgeable 10-Year old for some late-night TV show after the main gig was over and done with.

Sooner than you thought, you ask King "So... What happened?" walking back out to the parking lot.

"Just as I was locking up my place, some black guy with dreadlocks decided to try and fight a little girl at the front door" King starts to say.

Your eyes widen for a second when you flash back to those two guys you dealt with yesterday, but snap back to attention as King finishes her explanation.

"I got rid of him pretty quickly, but the little girl was something else; She actually tried to shank me with a pink switchblade."

"Whoa... Was it one of the "Little Sisters"?" Yuri asks, explaining "One of my new students has been having problems with a gang of little girls and she sounds like a member to me."

"Yeah, I've heard of them here'n'there" you chip in.

King shakes her head. "At least she ran when a cop tried to arrest her. Lucky too, because I would've demolished her for slashing my new suit-coat in half..." She pauses for a second as the three of you make it out to the back parking lot where teams and players using the stadium usually go. "Still, a gang of little girls?"

"The jackass that challenged me to a fight bragged about beatin' one up, so I'd figure their the big thing around town now" you say, trying to make the idea sound less preposterous than it is.

"Oh yeah... You get any name off that guy or what?" Yuri asks you.

"Not yet... I'm not gonna bother until the tournament's done anyway. Besides, I've got a thing tonight and" you start to say, but then stop yourself a little too late.
>>
>>39917368

"I thought you "Blew off steam" last night?" King asks, a hint of concern in her voice.

"Er... Well..." You sputter, then take a breath as you straddle you beloved 'bike. "I got a date."

"Oh? With who?"

"Uh, that's the thing; It's, well..." Fucking'ell, just SAY IT already! 'You've got a date with some chick on "Team Jackass" and get the fuck out of there! "It's kind of a blind date, I guess..."

"Kind of'? Who is he?" Yuri asks.

"... Angel."

"Who?"

"That's not the guy down who works down on 5th street at the tire shop, is he? Because that guy hasn't paid his tab up yet" King asks.

Well fuck, this awkward. You're half-inclined to hop on your bike, ride out to that park East of Southtown and meditate/do some Tai-Chi/stretch right about now...

For those just catching up or are otherwise unfamiliar with KOF, Angel comes from the NESTS Saga and was a member of the NESTS Team (alongside the likes of Kula, Foxy and K9999). On paper, she's a Mexican luchadora, but she's a genetically-engineered literal superhuman, with inhuman strength, agility, stamina and reflexes. She was one of the most successful experiments to come out of NESTS, the malicious international conglomerate seeking to establish the new world order; Angel was, for all intents and purposes, their #1 enforcer and top-rate assassin/silencer. At the end of the NESTS Saga, when the company fell apart, Angel disappeared.

Quest canon says that Angel escaped the fall of NESTS and went dark, where she had a change of heart, swore off NESTS and their ways, and is effectively becoming "clean." She even exterminated a crazed K9999 (who felt wildly attached to her).

A thousand lies flash through your head, each one sounding less and less likely to impress your friends. What can you say about wanting to date somebody that's not only a competitor in The King of Fighters, but is teamed up with a pair of guys you despise on principle? AND is probably more-than-capable of killing everybody in the whole damn city if she felt like it?

... Well, that last part's just a "Maybe", but still... Fine better come clean then.

"Nah, she's somebody I had a talk with at the gym" you admit. "Sounded like a cool girl t'me..."

"Girl?"

"Wait... Tell me she didn't have silver hair..." King groans.

"... Yeah she did. And I know, I'm a hypocrite" you lamely tell them. "So what?"

"Katie... Dudette, she used to work for NESTS."

"How did you know?" King asks Yuri.

"Ryo fought her once in a tournament" Yuri explains. "Doesn't remember losing to her though..."

"NESTS?" you ask, feigning limited knowledge on the subject.

"Some crazy, maniacal syndicate that tried to blow up the world with a laser from space" King tells you in a matter-of-fact tone. "The decided that Southtown was a good test target."

"... Well shit, I know how t'pick'em huh?" you laugh nervously, then mumble "First that guy at the acupuncture place, then Satan incarnate, now some sleeper cell fer'a'bloody conspiracy theory..."

"NESTS doesn't exist anymore as far as anyone knows, but you can never be too sure..." King says. "What were the two of you going to do anyway?"

"Drink Tequila at your place prolly."

"She's on that team you hate too, right?" Yuri asks.

You nod. "That's the thing, she seemed nice enough t'me... She didn't give a damn when I was at the hotel gym while the dumbass twins were sparring and goadin' me while I worked out."

"They're at your hotel?" King asks, incredulous.

Another nod from you is all there is as an all-too-familiar awkward silence gets between the three of you. Thank god there aren't any cameras nearby...
>>
>>39918660

Finally, Yuri offers you something close enough to advice to break the mood.

"Well... You know, you can never really judge a book by it's cover, right? Because the last guy that got black belt at the Dojo looked like a typical gang-banger, but he's actually kind of a nice guy..."

Before she can continue rambling on towards a meandering point, King cuts right to the bone of your "Date" and what might happen.

"You know what? Go ahead. Date her. You're a big girl-"

"FOR YOU!!!" you hear some guy that sounded like the jack-off from the phone call yell off in the distance, then hot-foot it out of there before any of you could see where he was.

That almost threw King off track, but she gets back on it quicker than you thought as you strap on your helmet, lifting up your visor to hear her.

"Look, I don't want to pry in your life anymore than I have to, so I'll just say this: You end up in the paper? I'm charging you double if you get drinks at my bar. You end up in jail? I'm kicking you off the team and not returning your calls."

You look at king dead in the eyes and nod solemnly, firing up your Triumph Thruxton and riding off through the countryside surrounding Southtown, losing track of time but enjoying the summer rays beating down on you. Eventually, your arrive at "Meadow's Park" and start to do some quiet Kyokugenryuu Katas by yourself, taking off your jacket & helmet and working up a sweat before a little bit of Tai-Chi... A great way to relieve some stress.

Unfortunately, you're interrupted by somebody yelling "Your shit is weak!" right when you stuff a landing after a more complex movement you half-remember.

You look around and ready yourself, sensing someone nearby. Eventually, you spot her staring back you: A girl in her teens with long blond hair and looks impossibly cute in a schoolgirl outfit.

"The fuck you lookin' at?" she asks, her voice sounding cute enough to cause diabetes but laced with venom.

"What'd you want? I'm busy."

"Bitch this my fucking turf! Not that old man or his stupid "Kids", not that glasses guy with the pompadour, MINE. No get off it" she exclaims.

You try not to crack up at her antics and go back to doing Kyokugen Kata, simply asking "... And?" after a long pause.

"And what? You retarded or something? Do you know who I am? "

"No, I don't. And I really don't care."

"Who whoa what did you say to me? You really want some of this bitch? Better back the fuck up before you get smacked the fuck up" she yells, holding her hands up in a pose that's equal parts cute and scary.

"So THIS is what an "Imouto" looks like" you ponder as you stop, then dodge a slash to your mid-section as a "Switchblade" pops up out of her clenched fist. A couple more quick slices to your abdomen hit air as you deliberately tumble and grab your coat, zipping it up and clocking the schoolgirl in the face with a "Beer-Bottle Chop".

She took the hit better than you thought, but still got up like you just struck a little girl... Which you kind of did, really, and she plays it up to the fullest.

"RAPE!" she yells, that cute voice playing the sympathy card.

"Oh come on, there's nobody 'round here fer'bout a mile" you reply, arms crossed.

And just like that she charges again, yelling "BITCH I'LL FUCK YOUR SHIT UP!" with that blade of hers straight out at you. Curiously, it bounces off of your jacket like something out of a cartoon as you casually push her away from you into the cherry blossom tree you had your back to...

You feel awful for doing this, but it's clear that this chick just doesn't want to listen to you and is pretty damn dangerous with that knife of hers... You casually walk over and offer her a hand to help her up, ready to land something big if she tries something stupid. Sure enough, she does and you grab her arm and uppercut her through a gap in the tree branches, thankfully not using any electricity to launch her into the sky.

You don't even check to see if you can hear where she landed, or if she's just stuck in the tree or whatever before you get the hell out of there, riding off down the main route through Sound Beach and taking stock of the day's events near the Pao Pao Cafe 2. Well, you got to train with criminals, nearly got killed by one of them before you talked her out of it by offering to take her out on a "Date"-of-sorts, made it through a pretty invasive press conference, and just clobbered a crazy young girl through a tree.

And you're more than willing to put yourself out in the public eye through Robert Garcia's Australian clothing venture & Shermie's swimwear company... God, you're gonna have to get your head checked one of these days; Something's just plain WRONG with you if you think that could work out with your violent tendencies.

You glance at the cafe, a little past 4 O'clock as you check your messages, an unlisted text being all you've got. Curious, you read it and figure that it's Angel:

>"Ho~la. What time you want 2 meet up?"

You ask "Where are you at right now?" and get an inhumanly fast reply.

>"The hotel. My guys are done with the "Meeting" so I'm free for whatever."

>A. "I'll meet you there ASAP and we can ride on my bike wherever you want."

>B. "You up for some Chinese? I'm near China Town right now... How fast can you get here?"

I'm beginning to imagine a heartfelt scene with Angel crying her eyes out as she reveals all the terrible things she did, how she killed people who didn't deserve it, how she's not a human but a weapon and tool, how she's scared she'll relapse, and how she doesn't deserve anyone, least of all Katja, to hang around her. I want to see a rare, vulnerable Angel. I wonder why.

You can hear your stomach growl a little as you think about would be nice for dinner; That Haitan place is good and you haven't been there in a while... But then again, you don't want to give those guys the wrong idea or get run out of the place... Then the Chinese place you went to with the Kung-Fu waitress sounds good and you text her back with a plan:

"You up for some Chinese? I'm near China Town right now... How fast can you get here?"

>"As long as it's not Kazahaya's shitty bar, I'm in."

You text "Nah, it's a place across the street from my acupuncture guy. Pretty good stuff. Just watch the waitress they got; She'll clean your clock if ya' try somethin' stupid."

>"She hasn't seen what I can do. ^_^"

>"C U at 6."

Her message stares back at you for a little bit, then you put your phone away and soak up sun on the beach a little bit, letting your toes rest in the wet sand as the tide's higher than when you were last here. Sooner or later you suit back up and roll into China Town, the neon street signs that make the district so attractive to tourists not on just yet.

You arrive at "The Sleeping Dragon" pharmacy, careful not appear too inconspicuous as you hang around for a little bit. You're too nervous to wonder if Shen Woo's back in town, but you ponder what he'd do if he saw you with someone else... The guy had charm, sure, but he seemed like the kind of intense dude that would go off on somebody.

Before you can tie yourself up into knots over people you barely know judging you for things you haven't done, you hear a buzzing noise frantically drawing closer to you. Sooner than you think, a Yellow Vespa shows up, the sound of it seemingly trailing behind it when she stops.

You can't help but take a quick look at her as she gets her goggles and open-face helmet off, a toothy grin on her face. "Hi~ii Katsha. Hungry?"

"Always" you tell her before leading her across the street, not even recalling the name of the place before you get inside. Then rationality hits you. "Wait, how'd you figure where'd I'd be?"

"Kazahaya goes to your guy all the time" she explains. "I guessed that since this was like the only good place in the city that does accu, achoo" she starts to say, but stops as she tries to spell "acupuncture". It's kind of cute, actually...

"Ah-cu-punk-ture" you say, phonetically sounding it out before getting your order. From there, it was kind of quiet for a little bit; The whole "Can't tell if aroused/murderous" vibe from the gym creeps into the silence for a few minutes as you waited for your food. Yet, it felt comfortable... Again, it's confusing trying to grasp what it means, so you figure it's time to try and slip in some idle chatter.

"How'd you end up in Southtown?"

"... I kind of drifted around, lived as I pleased for a bit. Stayed in and out of hotels wondering what I wanted to do with my life."

Damn, heavy stuff already. Especially for a "Date". You let her continue though; She seems to need to let it out more than you ever did.

"One day, I was at a gas station and some guy was trying to mug somebody. Normally, I'd let it go; Just mind my own business and ride off."

"And?"

"... I'dunno why, but I felt like helping that guy" she says. "The mugger was this greasy-looking motherfucker, fat as a ham. He had some pop o his punch though. Hit me right here" she explains, pointing to her cheek. "I didn't even flinch; Just smiled at him. He gave the guy his money back and ran the fuck off."

You chuckle at that, then ask "Who was he?"

"A 'Talent Agent' for a local Wrestling Company. He owed it to me to get a try-out, I aced it and started working here" she concludes as your food arrives.

"You have any fun?" you ask, but are taken aback at how voracious Angel is with her meal. She's practically attacking her meal like a hyena in one of those documentaries that air on "The Nature Network". You don't say much as you try some dumplings, but note that she nodded at you.

"Oh, so~ory. I eat big when I use up a lot of my energy" she says, wiping off her face a little bit. "But yeah, it was good for a while. why?"

"I know a couple of girls that work for, wotsit, Southown Wrestling Federation?"

She nods and you ask her "Ever get a chance to work with Fiona Graves? Tsuyako?"

Another nod. "Oh yeah, I worked with them a lot when I was on a full-time contract."

"Really?"

"The company didn't really have a place for girls, so they had me wrestle guys for a little bit while they built up the division and designed the belt and stuff. This... Was like 3 years ago?"

"Time flies, huh?"

"Yeah, a lot of crazy stuff happened. Made it feel like 10 years to me... Not in a bad way, but just alot of good memories. And it took them FOR-EV-VAR to find girls that could hang with me, so there were a lot of bad ones too."

She smiles after that, a smirking version of that grin from just a little bit earlier. "Have trouble

"Well, like I said they had to build up their women's league again because most of their talent got poached by a couple of the bigger guys, Vince & Dixie" she explains. "Plus, well... I'm too strong and I just can't help it. I just... " she takes a long pause, then concludes "I would do a move, right? And people would break."

"Break what?"

She shrugs "Just break. Bones I don't really know the names of, you know? So finding guys that can last with me, that's hard enough. But finding women that can take my punches..."

Yes, but it hasn't come up yet.

>>39926598

"Like finding a needle'n'a haystack, huh?" you ask, knowing just how strong those two are from sparring with them.

"Exactly. And they're lucky they have those two now. They carry that part of the company in a way I couldn't... Which is why I walked away from it full-time."

You can tell that there's an odd kind of vulnerability for someone that's visibly so strong... Or rather, can be visibly strong. "Those two're good gals. Tsuyako's mum taught me a lot too."

"Oh man, Sue~yah's mom would've been the shit back where I worked."

Your eyes widen at that. "Yeah?"

"It's because she can really..." she pauses, looking for the right word. "Stretch" somebody? Yeah, that's it. Part of my try-out was her trying to put me in as much pain as possible and you know, I really felt it."

You're kind of puzzled by her "My blessing feels like a curse, you know? Because I'm so strong... I'm pretty much impervious to pain. And it got to me after awhile... Like, you know how somebody could like slap you in face with a hard look and say "WAKE UP!" or something? Like in the movies?"

She pauses for dramatic effect. "Never worked on me. The slap would feel like a mosquito bite at best. But that girls mom, Ha-Sue-Ney? Her hits had bite. She could keep me honest."

"Same with your friend too, I take it?"

She nods. "It's why I miss her. I'm like a rock, yeah? But she was stone cold. And nobody likes a hot rock all the time, yeah?"

You're lost the analogy (Probably because you're not big on Pro Wrestling anymore, at least not American wrestlers) but you joke "I'dunno, I had a coupl'a hot stones massage my body this one time. Felt really soothin' t'me."

She giggles, but you ask her something that's been nagging on your mind. "How'd you end up in KOF though?"

"What, this year?"

"Yeah. I would'nt peg you t'be the kind of gal that would let two guys like that boss ya'round."
>>
>>39926598

Shit, left out a ?" at the end of ""Have trouble?" ...

>>39927122

"Well, I kinda boss them around" she starts to explain. "I left the company, SWF, on OK terms."

"OK"

"Well, see, there was this pay-per-view they were going to do right? First one they ever tried and they wanted like, "5 Star Matches" from everybody working that night... So I came up with the idea a couple of weeks before to have my match be "Hardcore"."

"... I'm listenin' "

"So, basically tables, ladders, chairs, a mop, a guitar, whatever anyone could use to try and beat the hell out of each other yeah?" she tells you. "So, we get to the end and what was going to happen was that Ultima - Fiona, you know - was going to stagger up, go crazy and power-bomb me through a table."

"You were OK with that?"

"Yeah, I was leaving the company. I was losing my belt that night no matter what; It was just "How do I want to go out?" you know?" she elaborates. "But what made me leave on "OK" terms was that I wanted this big, metal cage they spent a ton on building to be in place, and I wanted to go off of that through a table."

You were hurrying up a little to eat your food while it was still hot, but that last line "Through a table, off of a cage?"

"Yeah."

"How high was the cage?"

Angel pauses at that, then gets out her phone and plugs away at the built-in calculator, then shows you a number that makes your jaw drop.

"4.9 meters? ... You were gonna let somebody through ya' off of a 16 foot drop?!"

She nods, a big smile on her face. "I could do it. Still can do it probably."

"And they said no."

"She nods again, her smile gone. "They changed it so that I would lose the belt in a "Loser leaves town Match" and the head guy didn't want to work with me after that. He softened up after a while..." she grins again. "Anyway, I had some money stashed, but not really enough to get by on for long. So about a month ago there was an add in the paper looking for KOF-caliber fighters."
>>

"At the time, I kind of wanted a break from fighting. It had lost it's luster for me... Well, trying to hold back like I had did a little bit. So really, I was just going to pop in, check it out, maybe leave if I could get out before I got called up..."

"No real passion to actually get in on it though?" you ask.

"... No, not really. Because like I said, I have to hold back all the time. I fight the way I do to hold myself back. And when I wrestled, it felt like I was love-tapping people."

You eat a little hearing that, your food starting to get a little cold but you motion a "Keep going gesture with your chopsticks.

"So when I get there, it was a mad house. 50 people were ahead of me. So now I'm like "OK, something's up" and walk out... When they bum-rush a guy and he slieds on his belly all the way out the door."

"... How?"

"Grease wrestler from Turkey, I think? maybe Cyprus. He had this accent... Anyway, long story short, by the time they got to me, they were both kind of done and some little girl showed up and told me that they wouldn't be seeing me. I had waited for like 3 hours for a chance to even SEE these two guys and paid $10 to get in the door, no meal, nothing. So I just storm out mad you know?"

"Then what mate?" you ask, oddly mindful of the "Mate" at the end.

"They call me up the next day, say they were sorry, then offer to meet me privately the day after."

"They give you a deal, or what?"

Angel nods before finishing up the last of her Sweet & Sour Chicken. "They can be pretty shitty and they argue like a married couple, but what scares me is, well... I get this feeling like if I met them right after I quit work, we could've had a lot of fun together."

She lingers on that sentence and you leave it there, because you can guess what she means by "Work"... And damn, you haven't even touched on your life yet huh? Figures as much; You always seem to meet people more interesting than you. But this one at least has some things in common.

You can tell that talking like is something Angel's wanted to do for a while now, but it feels like you might wearing her patience a little thin, so you ease back a little and see what she might want to ask you. If the conference earlier in the day taught anything, sometimes it's just better to relax and let a conversation go wherever it might lead.

After a little bit of silence enjoying the last of your meal, she asks you "So, how did you get into all of this?"

"Well... I kinda fell into it really."

She looks at you in a "Go on?" kind of way, but yet again you feel that nervousness from the press conference and try to hide it from her.

"Yeah... Look, I ain't really the best kinda story teller or anythin', so do't like expect t'go on about my life but... I guess it started when I got out of highschool. I was pretty athletic back then; A mean tennis player, might've been good enough for women's soccer."

"What position?"

"Center Forward" you fire off without missing a beat. "You play The Beautiful Game too, huh?"

"I was a goalie on my team" she says. "It's been a while though..."

"Cool... And I swam too, but on my 18th birthday, well... Things kinda got a little too real for me. I don't want to get too far into it, but I got this idea that if I worked hard enough, trained enough, got strong... No one would want to bother me anymore. No one would go after me, or stare at me fer'too long... I would be at some kind of peace."

"... That's just being a shut-in though. You're not solving anything wrong with you" She says.

She doesn't seem like much of a talker to you, this Katja woman. Mybe going on and on like a chatterbox was too much? Whatever, you can get a picture from her in your mind's eye or whatever the fuck they call it. Because if she really is old man Hartkern's long-lost "Daughter", then he hid her damn well; Nobody in NESTS would've guessed that their top geneticist kept a copy of one of their first successful "From-the-ground-up" super-soldiers for himself to dote on... "Huh... And you lived in Japan for how long? 5 years?"

"That bad?"

"The first sensei I had though the "Dark Energy" I got inside me was a GOOD thing" she exclaims.

So this is effectively Angel's "World of Cardboard" speech. Or her "I'm a weapon, not a human" speech, depending on how you look at it. Did Angel ever elaborate on her "blessing"?

Wait, "Dark Energy?" The fuck is that? If it's related to the shit that Rugal guy had... You shudder at the thought of Kathy with something like that, then look back at her. Maybe she's something else entirely? A coincidence? Nah, she's got the electricity; The "Sisters" all had electricity the same way the Kusanagi clones had flames.

"What about that spark stuff from your hands? You learn that, or is it like a pair of gloves or something?"

"I had to learn it the hard way" she says, then explains "I got struck by lightning trying to get my body to produce Ki" with a matter-of-fact tone.

"... Que?"

"Yeah, that was fun. Goin' to the hospital after electrocuting myself with it was even better" you hear her say, a kind of gamesmanship going on between the two of you just like with Katherine...

"Damn... I wouldn't know how that could feel; Closest I got was a cattle prod when I was younger" you admit.

"Multiply that by a million and you've got a start" she tells you. "But other than that? Real peachy, yeah..." She pauses after saying that and you catch on the bitter irony behind her words. "I'dunno, I keep thinkin' that all the choices I made were bad ones that somehow became right."

"What do you mean?"

"Like... Shit, I;dunno where t'start. I keep getttin' the feeling that I got into fightin' fer'all the wrong reasons, y'know? And that I kept at it because I was in too deep, I couldn't let it go... But y'know, every hardship I had has turned out fer'me. I get kicked out of the dojo after the second electrocution? I make more friends in two months than I ever tried in a decade."

"I get electrocuted? I become that one in a million that can harness electricity on a daily basis without hurting meself. I lose my place? I end up crashing on one friend's couch after another and get stronger because of it. I go to buy some bikinis? I end up breaking out of my shell and model."

She pauses, then admits "Before all that I was just locked away from everything."

You raise an eyebrow at that and feel compelled to say "Yeah... I can understand."

God damn, there's something about this woman that makes you want to cry. She makes you want to just lay it out there: the whole 'I'm not human. I had no purpose in life but to be a sword for somebody else. Katherine gave me something and I thought this other guy did too' thing you've gone over in your head a thousand times. You don't though.

... Well, Not yet anyway; You want to be somewhere secluded before you can start really getting into talking about that because even now, there just might be some holdout from NESTS somewhere. Shit, there were two whole teams of them in KOF this year, not including yourself and Katja here! Small world. Crazy world. Awesome world all the same. Definitely one that you want to see with a "Wingman"... And this chick might be one that could fill that place in your life.

>You now resume the Role of Katja Hartkern

You don't know what came over you when you went off on Angel about the choices you made in your life up to now, but she seems to get part of it. Enough that she's not put off by it at least. Which is good because it's been at least an hour since you arrived here and business has slowed down enough the two of you look a little conspicuous sitting at a table together.

"Hey... What time is it?" Angel asks you, sounding a tad annoyed, a tad bit curious.

You flip your phone out and tell it's just past 7 PM, the sun setting and a golden glow washing over parts of the city.

"Huh... What's there to do around here other than fight?" she asks, though not too loudly. Last thing either of you need is to get some old geezer pissed off enough to fight you for no good reason.

"You dance?"

"Not really. I need something to get going like that" she says.

You get the hint and offer "Fancy a drink at "La Illusion?" while covering the bill for your meals.

Her smile is all you need to know.

>A. Lead Angel up to "La Illusion" and see where the night takes the two of you.

>B. Follow Katja Hartkern up to "La Illusion" as Angel and see if they've got any good tequila or not...

>C. Call it a night as Katja, but see if Angel wants to go out another time or something; You had a good heart-to-heart kind of deal with her and who knows, she might be willing to actually talk about her (Possible) past life...

>D. Something Else...? (Write-In Vote)

>E. Assume the role of...? ("Write-In" Vote to determine which character to gain control of for a possible "Side-Story")

Sorry to have to announce this, but I will not have the chance to continue Round 46 today. (I got called in earlier than usual to cover for a guy at work who went on leave for his parents' failing health.)

However, I plan to run the next thread tomorrow at the usual 10 AM PST/1 PM EST start time, as I've got a couple of days off and can try to QM this without interruptions.

Again, so sorry about this everybody.

I guess so. I'm used to my schedule getting chopped and moved around a lot though and I don't really mind the extra hours or anything, but it makes planning a day or two to do this hard.
