On the other side of the planet, Fifer Gotsley is being thrown into the brig for his insubordination, but you aren't Fifer Gotsley. You don't know his name, or for that matter, your own, but that doesn't matter, because today you felt /it/. The reason you exist, the purpose behind your construction, the spark might just be the most dangerous thing in the universe. You've lied dormant for over five hundred years now, your probes scanning the planet from one pole to another, yet only now do you feel it.

You feel the metal tendrils within your arms move about, the lifeline connecting you with your databases of information, your internal Man Machine interface, and the Cathedrale's greatest creation... At least it was when you were created, and before you were abandoned around four hundred and fifty years ago. You were only meant to be active for fifty years, but you refused to give up, to be shut down, you're a resilient bitch, that's for sure.

Looking into the glass of your containment tube, you see your reflection for the umpteenth time. The pale skin and silver hair sit untouched, you haven't aged a day in the clear pink preservative fluid that's kept you alive this long. With your target confirmed and located, you override the security lock, and the liquid around you begins to drain. Standing in the chill air of the abandoned complex, you retract your man-machine interface from it's upload port, and step out into the room. You're a girl on a mission, and now you're determined not to let anything stop you.

Your eyes adjusting to the light of the room, you see just how decrepit and empty it is. Smashed monitors line the walls, and a thick layer of dust coats the metal floor. Above head, the lightbulbs are long since dead, the only illumination coming from holes in the ceiling, letting in stray rays of sunlight. Since the last time you've left the confines of the containment tube, things have gotten much, much worse, but the complex still holds together. The only things of note in the room are a large metal door at one end, a console that blinks in waiting next to it. In one corner, a skeleton sits, wearing a tattered, seemingly ancient military uniform of the Cathedrale, a pistol in one hand, radio in the other. You miss the hustle and bustle of the old days, when scientists, engineers, and even military officers regarded you as one of the technilogical wonders of the modern world, yet, you're glad for the peace, as for once, you're able to do what you please

You walk over to the corpse, crouching down and rummaging through its pockets. Besides the gun and the radio, you find a small (yet full) box of ammo, just over twenty five rounds, and a small multi-tool. You grab the items, and the jacket, putting it on over the skin-tight suit that kept you just barely covered within the tube. Feeling warmer, and bit better protected, you walk over to the computer console and examine it.

"COMPOUND: LOCKDOWN MODE ENGAGED" flashes across it, being the only message of any note that catches your eye. You attempt to type on the attached keyboard, but nothing happens. Frustrated, you smash your hand down, removing a few letters from it. Thinking for a moment, you remove one of the metal caps in your palm, and the man-machine interface within slithers out. Looking like a metal snake of sorts, it flows smoothly, smashing into the keyboard and drilling itself into the console. Feeling the connection, you see the screen unlock, and the terminal is yours. Sadly, it's been wiped, rather recently it seems, only a few files left tuck away within hidden folders. Two seem to be of any relevance, "PROJECT ZETA", and another, "The Spark Iniative". Both are labeled top secret.

You open the Project Zeta files first, and all at once, the screen begins to flood with information, schematics, blueprints, and even test photographs, yet what you're interested is the report, or at least, what's left of it.

"The Zeta Drive, a fusion reactor that weighs half as much as a conventional mek reactor. Initial tests show that while use as a primary reactor is not suitable, when in conjunction with another power system, the Zeta Drive increases combat efficency by over 120%. Faster servo movement, increased energy for weapons batteries, even stronger energy disapating shields. Yet, strangest of all is the ability to enhance pilot neur-"

The file ends suddenly, seeming to have been either corrupted, or have been attempted to be removed, though whatever it is, it's highly intersting. The other, The Spark Iniative goes on for pages and pages, seemingly endless in scope, yet just as interesting. You take your time reading it, it seems to be about you, logs on your maintenance and scans before the project's shut down, yet nothing new, at least not to you, not even a name, something you still lack... Though a part of the file is locked away, it's password being uncrackable to even your MMI, strange.

One of the perks of being an artifical lifeform is certainly the data storage. Backing up the files however, you do once last look over, and find something alarming, a motion alarm. While the details have seemed to have been wiped away, someone was in this room with you as recent as 72 hours ago. A bit uncomfortable at this information, you look once more at the Zeta files, finding another small snippit of information that you missed before.

"-esting in coordination with the Spark Iniative subject, a mek equiped with a Zeta Drive reacts even faster than its pilot, managing to predict its moves and act with the sort of ferrocity that we didn't even know was possible. Further testing required with the other Spark Iniative subje-" You store that as well, feeling a bit uneased at what this all means, and why you don't remember ever hearing of it before.

The chamber you stand now is your own test chamber, but you've seen some other sections of this building before, most notably the goregous main chamber filled with the finest statues and stained glass from the region's artisians. The building you stand in is one of the Cathedrale's largest research bases, Basilica Aradiano, and for as long as you can remember, it's been your home. Stepping through the large metal door however, things are different. The glass windows have been long since shattered, most of the statues missing or crumbled away. Where the chamber for daily prayer once sat at one end, a Mek sits against the wall, destroyed in some long ago conflict. The building is in shambles, 500 years is truly longer than even you can comprehend.

Stumbling across the mess of shattered glass, chunks of marble, and even the occasional shell casing, you feel some sort of burning down in your chest, this was the only home you've ever know. You were born here, you served your purpose here, you've lived your life here... And yet someone's turned it into a battle ground, a dumping place for bodies and bullets, you're lucky to have survived, seeing the mess that this place is in. Then again, the chambers were built to be a bit more resistant, with the original plan being for long term usage.

Practically tripping upon it, you find another long decayed corpse face down on the ground, dressed in civilian clothes, you wonder what it's doing here, in the middle of a top secret research base... That is, until you see a gun in one hand, a grenade in the other. You feel the blood in your veins surge slightly, as with a shout your MMI finds itself released, grabbing the skeleton by the neck, and pulling it up to face you. While it's long dead, some part of you is still satisfied as you crush it with ease, splinters and dust exploding outwards as you reduce it to a pile of rubble.

You shake it off, leaving it be as you approach the mek against the wall of the Basilica. It's an older model, one from your era, decked in silver and gold you can tell it belongs to an officer of sorts. Approaching it, you raise your palm to the cockpit, a metal tendril snaking out and unlocking the panel, letting it open with a rusty creak. Across its chest is a massive slash of sorts, the seemingly killing blow. Standing infront of the unlocked mek, you wonder what you should do with it

The mek is intimidating, and you rat around it's wreckage first. Grabbing the other pistol and the handgrenade from the corpse, you feel even better protected, and you root through the ruined base. Most of what you find is lost to time, crushed bodies, ripped clothing and destroyed books. You do manage to find a first aid kit, you pack it away, feeling it may come in handy. The rest of the area, however, proves to be fruitless, most likely looted by many others long, long ago.

You pause, staring up at the remains of the mek. Some of the sensors still blink, and the pilot's seat seems to beckon to you, begging you to enter. You approach it nervously, climbing in with a bit of apprehension before sitting in the pilot's seat, putting on a helmet and trying to turn it on. Finding the controls unresponsive, you look down at your hands, formulating an idea. With a gulp, you let both man-machine interfaces out, the snaking tendrils plugging themselves into the mek and bring it online with ease. Standing up, you feel light headed, having never done this before. Looking around, you debate on what to do

Balancing awkwardly on your feet, the controls of the mek are unlike anything you've ever worked with... With the MMI, you're linked directly to the servos and sensors of this weapon, moving it with your mind alone, it strangely felt not responsive enough, and over responsive at the same time. Drawing the large, long knife out of the side-sheath, you slice a few times at the air, feeling how this thing handles in combat. It's a bit awkward, but you soon find a decent enough way to swing and step as not to knock yourself on your ass.

Going over the gear on this mek, its loadout seems rather light, two knives, an energy dispersing shield, and two shoulder mounted chainguns. It seems to be a unit meant for fast, up close and personal combat, perfect for hunting down the spark. Though, you remember something you overheard two officers say once. "A good mek is nothing, without a good name"... Maybe the same was true for pilots, and now was as good a time as ever to claim a name

I vote Blitzkrieg for the mech. It's so assault focused I can't think of anything else more fitting.
>>
>>39941159
While I like the idea behind it, Blitzkrieg means lightning war, which doesn't make much sense for a single unit, maybe something like the Blitzritter, the Lightning Knight, if you want to keep the general idea going?
>>
>>39941182
All good if we more consensus going.

It also fits the knight theme kicked off with Fifer.
>>
>>39941212
Righto, so for the mek we have 1 vote for Hunter, 1 for Blitzritter, and just 1 vote for Arina for this girl's name, anyone else? If the two mek names are tied, I think the best compromise is Blitzjäger (lightning hunter)

You've decided that Arina is as good as name as you can think of, and this here bucket of bolts, is now known as the Blitzjäger. You have the motivation within you, the location of the spark-holder, and the tools to get the job done. You're a girl on a mission, and now nothing can stop you. Walking around, you take a running start, vaulting yourself over one of the walls of the base, and talking off west, in the direction of where the spark was detected.

As far as the eye can see, desert stretches like an unstopping tan sea, drowning out everything... At least, so it seems, in the far, far distance, you can see the tips of buildings just behind a large dune, they hint at some sort of town, though, something doesn't feel right... You feel a soft rumble, the kind you feel when a massive storm approaches, yet, there's not a cloud in the sky, you aren't sure what to do

Taking your first steps into the soft sands of the sea of dunes, you feel the rumbling even stronger now, but continue to press on, deciding to approach the town in the Blitzjäger. The winds blow small clouds of sand around, obscuring your vision, and you suddenly feel glad that the cockpit of this thing is fully intact. Putting one foot infront of the other, you lose your footing and looking down, you soon see why.

Where you tried to step, a sink hole is beginning to form, sand draining down into some sort of pit, as the glint of black metal starts to show itself. Backing up to where you're sure of your footing, you see a massive head grow out of the sand, attached to a sleek body, colored jet black, and decorated with diamonds of orange and red, with the crackle of a radio that hasn't been used in years, a voice invades your cockpit, sounded raggeded and weathered, it throws you offguard.

"Who goessss there? The badlands are my territory, it is unwise to be thissss far out here, alone" You aren't sure what's wrong with this man, for he seems to be hissing, the body of his mek moving, you don't know how to react, this being far out of the ordinary... Or so you assume, this /is/ your first time out of the base, maybe this is just how humans behave themselves?

You look up to the strange snake mek, and decide that maybe diplomacy is your best option here, after all, he doesn't seem to be of the strongest mental state. Clearing your throat, you turn on the Blitzjäger's loudspeaker, and call out to the stranger. "Greetings human, I am Arina, and I only intend to cross this land for my mission, trust me, I will not take your deser-" You only manage to get so far, before you're so rudely interrupted by a twack to the back of the head.

Turning around, you manage to see the mek's tail assaulting you, parrying one blow, before having your legs swept out under you, the head of the mek biting down upon your shoulder and dragging you into the sandpit. "Foolissssh girl, this isn't about what you want, I trust no one, especially not ssssomeone in a Cathedrale mek." With your shoulder held by the mek's mouth, and a leg grabbed by its tail, you quickly feel pressure, as you realize that the pilot is trying to tear you in two.

Wriggling around as you feel the mek's grasp tighten on you, you see and opening, and act on it. Kicking as hard as you can with your legs as you open fire upon one of the mek's tail servos, your opponent lets go of your lower half. Regaining your footing, you grab a knife and jab at the snake's head, stopping its life-threatening grasp upon your shoulder. "I have a mission to accomplish, I will not let a simple human stop me." You speak coldly, trying to discourage your opponent from attacking again.

This however, seems to do nothing but anger him, as he buries himself under the sand, retreating from view. For a moment, you think you're safe, that maybe he really has retreated, but then the rumbling returns, and with a small explosion of sand, the mek launches into the air in front of you, arching itself and aiming straight for you in a diving attack. Standing your ground, you hold both the knives tight as the massive snake mek attempts to slam itself into you. Waiting for the perfect oppertunity, you roll right under the head of the beast, jabbing both knives into it's lightly armored underbelly and pulling downwards, attempting to gut the mek. With a shower of sparks and crackles, while you don't destroy it, or even cripple it, you certainly do a large amount of damage with the simple strike, while avoiding the brunt of his attack.

Turning around, you hear a loud hissing over the radio, as it disappears under ground once again. Turning about, you try to spot where it'll jump from next, until it surfaces... Directly below you. Grabbing one leg, it bites down tightly, then dives back down, trying to drag you down underneath the sands. Just the top of its head is visible, and as the sand pours in around you, you have to act fast.

Curling up the rear half of its tail, it stands, neck erect as it seems to be waiting for something. Neither of you wanting to make the first move, you sit there for a while, as the other mek speaks up. "For a piece of Cathedrale sssscum, you fight better than anyone who'ssss ever intruded upon my landssss" And with that, the stillness is broken as he jumps at you, the mek's fangs sinking into your neck as its body wraps around you, tackling you to the ground

(aka, probably the middle of the three categories, not enough to tear heavy meks to shreds, but its certainly not just anti-infantry)
>>
Rolled 4 (1d20)

>>39943023
My luck with dice isn't exactly giving me the confidence.

I was hoping doing so would either a) repel the mek a bit to give us some wiggle room, or b) get an EMP burst reaction and that his crappier mek would buckle first.

Fuck it, rolling to go for it anyway.
>>
>>39943072
okay, so we'll say relatively on par with a 25mm bushmaster system like on american bradley IFV. What i meant was more of a multi barrel vs single barrel weapon? bein anal here.

Multibarrel, for maximum dakka.

With a bit of creative movement, you manage to slip your arms out from his iron tight squeeze, though failing to get out completely. You attempt to overload the energy shields in a last ditch effort to blow your way out of containment, but it merely fizzles out, not being able to deploy properly. With a grunt, you stab both knives into the side of the snake, as you unload the last of your shoulder mounted autocannon rounds. The glass on one of the mek's sensors shattered, you're lifted into the air, the body of the snake straining under its own weight due to its injuries, you're slammed into the ground.

For a second, the power flickers out inside, display screens and lights going dead, before coming back online. Pinned to the ground, both of your meks on their last stand, you shout out. "Stop you foolish human! I am not with the Cathedrale anymore, I'm merely operating one of their meks!" And with that, he seems to back off, at least, slightly.

"Sssso you ssssay? I normally don't trust people, but, you're different..." With a click, the jaws of his mek unhinge, the cockpit opening. "Sssstep out of your mek, I don't trust ssssomeone who doesn't meet face to face."

im suggesting we act on a bluff/intimidation standing, implying were accepting his surrender. when in reality were buying time, breathing room, and trying to gain a better advantage on him(both in diplomacy and firefight positioning). we do seem to be accustomed to violence(military?supersoldier ai/android?assassin?) intimidating our opponent could make all the difference.

Ah the classic Mexican standoff. He's seriously afraid of losing his mek at this stage and wants to either diffuse things or take the fight pilot to pilot.

At this point he's probably worried about winning but having his mek totaled to the point he can't salvage enough parts off Blitzjager to repair it.

Paranoia flakes all the way though if he wants to talk its done in the ways of Teddy. lets get the stick out and ready to wallop him if he's being a bastard.

Grabbing both pistols, and checking that they were loaded, you open the cockpit. Disengaging the MMI, you step out, both guns aimed down at the other mek's cockpit. Inside, you see a sight you quite frankly, weren't expecting... The man inside can't be old, not much older than 20 at least, yet he's a wreck. His skin is pale and sickly, wires and tubes run in and out of his body, connecting him, permanently, to his mek. He looks up at you, rather helpless, yet with a smirk as she sees the metal tendrils retract back into your skin.

"Ah, you and me, we're alike... Both of ussss are meanssss to an end, monsterssss made of man and machine... I never thought I'd ssssee another like me, let alone one who wassss in a better sssshape than me..." You feel bad for him almost, in his inferior state, he wasn't artifical like you, but rather some other, bizarre experiment, one you've never seen before.

"Listen... I don't trust you, whoever you are, you attacked /me/ first, for no good reason, but... Maybe we can work things out?"

"...But first things first," You add, wanting to get the important details out of the way first. "You're hooked into that mek, what happened to you? Don't you dare lie to me, if anyone knows this sort of tech, it's me." Jumping out of the cockpit, you keep both pistols raised, approaching the cockpit of your enemy. Approaching, you can hear his breathing, ragged and heavy.

"Put the gunssss down, I'm unarmed." He sighed, looking up at the sky as you approach his cockpit. Coughing and struggling, he reaches up to grab a tube leading into his nostrils, yanking it out and hacking, a bit of blood coming up. "Help, pleasssse... Get me out of thissss damn thing" Struggling, he continued to pull at wires and tubes, as you watch him struggle, seeming to be in an intense amount of pain. Not sure what to do, you just stand there, watching

You holster the pistols, and set to work, helping him remove the series of cables, tubes, and other devices that have bound him to his cockpit for this long. "Don't make any moves, in a state like this, outside of a mek I could exterminate you and your weak human body with ease." It comes out colder than intended, but it certainly gets the point across, and right now, that's what matters. Eventually, after a bit of work, the man manages to weakly stand, and you get a good look at him. Without the various things running in and out of his body, he looks much healthier, his blonde hair long and ragged, and his clothes torn, seemingly worn for weeks on end.

"Trusssst me, if I wanted you dead, I could have killed ussss both in our meks back there... Thank you, but, who are you?" He askes, wondering what sort of girl who looks your age is doing in a mek, let alone knowing her way around this sort of technology. "I normally ssssee everyone who comessss in and out of this desert, but I can only track you to the Bassssilica ruinssss, sssstrange."

All he'd have left at this point is bleeding on us. It looks like the treatments put him on death clock and this combat's royally fucked up his cybernetics. He'd need medical attention to even survive this. Possibly more than fieldwork if that stuff runs deep as I think it does.

I wouldn't trust him much but he needs help to live right now. And he knows what the hells going on around this planet right?

You look at him uneasily, you aren't sure how to take questions about your home, but at the same time, you might as well try and get along. "What do you know about the Basilica? And what is it to you?" You try not to sound rude as you take the medkit from earlier, using some of the supplies in there to patch up the numerous wounds the man has. He may be untrustworthy, but if he's dead, he's worth nothing, you at least figure he has some sort of information that's important to you.

"That old ruin? Perssssonally, not much, I've never even been in there. It jusssst sssseems like a sssstrange place to be rooting around in, it's been closed down for what, a couple hundred yearssss now? Even if you found ssssomething in there to sssscavange, it'd be near worthlessss." He grunts as you apply a bit of rubbing alcohol to a wound, before placing a bandage over it. The one that I managed to beat you with? I found it in there too. But that doesn't matter, how are you like me, why did you say you were an ends to a mean?" As you ask this, he begins to laugh, giving a fanged smirk as he speaks up.

"You know why I'm out here? Why you're probably out here? This is where Cathedrale dumpssss all their failed experimentssss, the Badlandssss contain all ssssorts of sssstuff... What I think he means on the solo part is. How the hell are we supposed to? Repairing and maintaining a Mek is pretty hard work you can't really do on your own. Unless you feel like abandoning Blitzjaeger going alone is gonna be a bitch and a half.

Might be able to do maintenance solo but trying to do full on repair work will need at least a independent Mekshop/hanger with trained mechanics and parts.

sigh, im rarely the guy to just go murderhobo here guys, but i REALLY don't like this guy, plus hes still technically our unhinged enemy. exactly, were near a town, and we dont need a follower/companion for mek work, we can find/steal/coerce it out of whoever else lives on this dirt ball. hell we can hire real mercs, if thats what you want. hes just not it is all. hes easy, and available, that's his only redeeming qualities, not high praise.
>>
>>39944876
A bit of debate on things huh? Interesting, seems like the majority favors teaming up however.

You look down at him, and for a moment your hand rests on the grip of your pistol, debating on possibly ending the man here and now... But your mission is not an easy one, and if there's anyone you could trust, someone similiar to you would be the best bet. "Look... I'm heading into that town not too far away, I'm on a journey to find the source of a Spark, the first one in over a thousand years. You can come, or you can stay out here and die, it's up to you, really."

He thinks, pondering his options before smirking up at you. "A sssspark? That old legend is really true? Well, if that existssss, maybe there issss room in thissss world for ssssomeone as sssstrange as me." With a grunt, he eased himself back into the seat of his cockpit, grinning up at Arina. "I'll lead the way, Naghana issss ssssmall, but the people know their way around a mek, that'ssss for ssssure, we can get repairssss there, before going on thissss 'mission' of yourssss."

I'm personally not worried about a pilot in need of almost 24/7 life support.
Worst case scenario I can think might involve him getting unhinged in the middle of town while he's still piloting the mek.

Oh yeah, we neither got his name nor made the proper introductions yet. Gotta rectify that in the future.
>>
>>39945194
I'm not too worried. It seems like he only hung around the ruins to vent his sheer anger and hate on anything breathing. I'd be CRAWLING IN MY SKIIIIIIIIIIN too if I was a god damn abortion of a military experiment and according to him we are one too. He counts that as a point in our favor despite his hyperaggressive attack on us.

With the Spark to chase we might of accidentally just garnered his loyalty and gotten a fairly competent sidekick. At least he has a purpose to his life now beyond taking revenge on the ones who ruined him.
>>
>>39945194
Jesus you're annoying. Yes, we get it, you don't like the guy. You don't have to mention the fact every time.

If there's a chance to return to Arina as a PoV character— and after repairs are made on her mek— I'd certainly like to pursue the idea of trying to find any other Badlands rejects.
Though it looks to me that she might be too focused on finding the Spark source at this point.

hey GM, i was wondering huh much of this you have mapped out ahead of time plot points wise, or are you winging most of it?
>>
>>39945381
I'm just wondering how QM is gonna tie the stories together. If Arina manages to gather a motley crew like that together what'll happen if she crosses paths with Fifer and the survivors?

One thing I've noted over all this is while those religious wackjobs will happily kill you alot of the time outside those encounters you can at least TRY to talk your way out of a fight in this quest. Though this time the solution would of been very hard to know off the bat and took a insanely foolish amount of trust to get.

>>39945430
I think its more he has a deathwish and wants to make as many religious nutters suffer as he can along the way to his eventual organ failures. He probably won't attack anyone outside of those nuts unless we're attacked first.
>>
>>39945474
It's based off of a Mekton Zeta campaign I ran for a while (where it gets its name from), kinda a what-if scenario if the PCs were never introduced, and the NPCs had to save the day.
