The Gallian Army has stopped at an oasis to cool down and take stock. This isn't your final destination - it's much too exposed, and it has relatively little strategic value aside from the water - but it does lead to several other, more valuable locations. General Gunther is meeting with his advisers to make the final arrangement. In the meantime, you have your own affairs to sort out.

"Vanessa, what are the General's options from here?" You ask your scout.

"It's more of the same, really," she says. "A few rocks with decent vantage points, ruins, more desert… There is one large Valkyrur ruin that would offer a defensible position. I would guess that General Gunther wants to move his headquarters there."

You nod slowly. You're not in a hurry to get back inside one of those - not after what you found the last time - but they are sturdy and they offer good shelter. The General would be a fool to ignore it.

"I suppose all we can do is wait for orders," you say. "Has Gaul set up shop yet?"

"More or less," Vanessa says. "He hasn't taken out all of his supplies, but since General Gunther is probably going to split up his army, Gaul decided to offload some of his military equipment before the next battle."

The 33rd has been pushing the Imperials back, but they should have reached their limit by now. You don't expect your next battle to be too difficult, but you might as well prepare for it.

"We'll do some training first," you say. "Get the team together."

"Right away," Vanessa says. She runs off to gather the rest of your squad.

Roberta and Danielle show up first, followed by Jetje and Karl. William and Nina arrive next. Soon, your whole squad is assembled and standing at attention.

"The party's over, people," you say. "We're getting back into the fight as soon as the General has a new set of orders for us, and I intend to be ready. We'll start by reviewing the battles we've been through so far and find out what we can do better."

"Yes, sir!"

You take out a handful of maps and the after action reports you wrote down after your battles.

You finish reviewing your battles, satisfied that you'll do better next time and keep surviving whatever the Empire has to throw at you.

After you're done, you head for Sergeant Gaul's truck to check out his wares.

"Come to do a little last-minute shopping before the General sends you back into the fight?" Gaul asks with a smile. "I've got all the high-quality guns you need right here." He pats the side of his truck.

"You haven't sold me any dud bullets so far," you say. "Show me what you have."

There's the usual supply of weapons and armoured uniforms - you've already got those - but there are also some more recent items which could improve your equipment.

"I'll take the sniper rifle, the grenades and the tank upgrades," you say.

"Oh, good," Gaul says. "I really didn't want to keep hauling those tank upgrades. So heavy…"

"Can you handle the delivery?" Danielle asks.

"Sure, sure," Gaul says. "I'll have my engineers install everything. You can have a look at it once they're done."

"Thank you," Danielle says.

"That settles that," you say. "I'm going to see if the General has our new orders. Wait for me at our camp."

"Yes, sir!"

You dismiss your squad and head over to the General's tank just as a private comes running out.

"Oh, Captain de Velde," the private says. "General Gunther has just finalized the battle plans. Please, head right in."

"Thanks," you say.

Inside the tent, you see General Gunther and Captain DuLac, pouring over maps of the area.

"Captain Renard de Velde, reporting for duty." You salute the general. "What are our orders?"

"At ease, captain," the General says. "I was just about to get started with the briefing. I've decided to move our headquarters to a Valkyrur ruin. You and Captain DuLac will provide support while he establish our defenses."

"What do you need from us, General?" Captain DuLac asks.

"For now, I have three tasks that need to be taken care of," General Gunther says. "You'll take one each, and the forces under my direct command will take care of the third."

General Gunther points at a spot on the map.

"The 33rd is in this area," the General says. "I need someone to scout it out and make sure they haven't let any Imperial forces slip through. This is a reconnaissance mission, not a combat mission, so if you do encounter hostiles, return immediately to warn us. I also need someone to patrol the area between the Valkyrur ruins and the 33rd's current location. That is a search and destroy mission, but I don't expect heavy resistance. Finally, I need someone to help me clear out the Valkyrur ruins themselves. At this time, we don't know if the Imperials have any forces in there, but I don't want to take any chances."

"Take your pick first, Captain de Velde," Captain DuLac says. "I don't have a particular preference."

"We'll help you clear the Valkyrur ruins," you say.

"In that case, we'll patrol the areas for hostiles," Captain DuLac says.

"And my forces will make sure the 33rd don't let anyone through," General Gunther says. "Very well. You have your assignments. De Velde, I have enough soldiers to spare to secure the ruins. I'll need you to scout ahead, but don't take any chances."

"Yes, sir." You salute and return to your squad to report your orders.

They're all waiting for you around the tank.

"We have our new mission," you say. "General Gunther wants us to clear the ruins we'll be using as our new headquarters. It might be empty, or it might be full of Imperials. We'll find out when we get there."

"Do we have a plan?" Jetje asks.

"Not yet," you say. "I want to see what the area looks like first. We'll have to improvise this one. Any other questions?"

Your subordinates all shake their heads.

"In that case, get ready," you say. "We'll have some support, but I want to be the first ones there."

The Valkyrur ruins are a fair distance away, but you manage to reach them before the sunsets - part of what makes it such a useful location is that it's close to the oasis you just stayed at.

You roll up slightly ahead of General Gunther's other forces and take a look at the ruins. The General himself has accompanied you, although he's staying far at the back.

"That's a Valkyrur ruin all right," Jetje says. "Any suggestions?"

You look at the ruins and ponder the situation. The only place your tank will fit is the Valkyrur temple's main entrance, which will most definitely give away your presence. You could take a smaller team to have a look around, maybe find a secret entrance, but it would take time and you might have to use the main entrance anyway.

You pound on your tank's armour to get Moeller's attention and she opens up the hatch to listen in on your orders.

"We'll have a look around with the infantry first," you say. "Moeller, I need you to stay here and keep a lookout on the temple's main entrance. If any Imperials swarm out, make sure they don't get far."

"I understand, sir." She ducks back into her tank.

"Leifstel and Schreiner will head in first," you say. "Stroheim, Kreuss and I will stay behind them. Nelson, stick behind us. It doesn't look like they have any tanks, but I don't want to take any chances. Garcia, you'll be in charge of protecting our rear. Let's move!"

You approach the temple from the side to make sure no one spots you from the inside. You don't see anyone outside the temple, so unless they're extremely well-hidden, your approach shouldn't be spotted.

Your pace is slow - Leifstel and Schreiner put their shields up and are moving defensively to keep the rest of the squad covered. It does, however, give you and Kreuss plenty of time to look around.

There's nothing around the temple. No trails, no imperials, no evidence that anyone has been here recently. The most you see are some trails right outside the main entrance, but it's impossible to know how old they are, or who they belong to.

"We're clear so far," Kreuss says. "Shall we go in?"

>"Yeah, let's head inside and stay quiet."

"Let's keep going," you say. "Kreuss and I will go first. I want to keep this quiet as long as possible."

"Yes, sir," Kreuss says as she moves around the two fencers.

You follow after her and the two of you creep into the temple. You don't see any Imperials watching the entrance, so you dash in as quickly as you can and hide behind two of the spiral columns that prop up the temple.

The inside of the temple is illuminated by a pale blue light that seems to come from everywhere and nowhere. You and Kreuss walk deeper and deeper into the main hall and the rest of the squad follows after you. Once again, you don't see anyone. You do, however, find some more recent signs of life - patterns in the dust suggests that there were crates piled up here and there. It's not much, but it's enough to suspect that you might not be alone.

"The main hall is clear," Kreuss says. "We can explore the rest of the first floor, or we can go up. There doesn't seem to be a way down."

"Do you think it's safe to bring in the rest of General Gunther's forces?" Schreiner asks. "They could secure the main hall while we clear the rest of this place."

"We'll clear the top floors first," you say. "Formation's the same. Garcia, watch our backs."

"Yes, sir," Garcia says.

You move up the spiral staircase on the left side of the hall. There's another one on the right, but your squad isn't big enough that you can afford to split up. You'll just have to trust Garcia to spot anyone who tries to sneak up on you from behind.

You step in first, holding your rifle at the ready. Due to the spiral architecture of the stairs, there's a substantial blind spot, so you keep your finger on the trigger. It goes against basic gun safety, but sometimes, gun safety means being ready to shoot someone in the chest at a moment's notice.

Halfway up the stairs, you feel your foot hit something.

>(1/2)
>>
>>39944576
"Stop!" You gaze down to see your foot pressing against a tight wire. One end of the wire is attached to a grenade. "Nelson, you can disarm explosives, right?"

"Of course I can. Otherwise, I would have blown myself up by now." Nelson quickly walks up the stairs. "What do you - Oh."

He spots the grenade set not one foot away from you.

"I can take care of that right away," Nelson says. He carefully bends down and unhooks the grenade from the wire. He then opens up the grenade itself and dismantles its components. "Problem solved."

"Thanks," you say. "Let's keep going."

You encounter two more explosives while going up the stairs. There are dozens more on the second floor. They're not difficult to disarm, but it does take time and your progress is slow. Fortunately, the second floor is all connected together, so you just take the second staircase on your way down. It, too, is rigged with explosives.

"Someone was definitely here," Schreiner says.

"They rigged this place quite well," Nelson says. "The main hall is safe to create a false sense of security. If we hadn't been so careful, we would have gotten ourselves killed going up the stairs."

You look out the main doors. The sun is almost down. You're not in any particular hurry, but this is taking a lot of time.

"Let's bring in the rest of General Gunther's people," you say. "Not that I don't trust Nelson, but I'd like to have this place given a look over with engineers who actually have the equipment to disarm explosives."

"That's probably for the best, to be honest," Nelson says.

You exit the temple and shoot a flare to attract the army's attention. The soldiers begin to close in, and the General's truck moves up to approach you first.

"What's the situation?" General Gunther asks.

"I'm not too sure, to be honest," you say. "The place seems empty, but it's rigged with explosives. The top floor should be clear, but we haven't gone through all of the first floor yet. I was hoping you could send a team of specialist to finish the job."

"I have people who can take handle this," General Gunther says, turning to his assistant. "Theimer?'

"I'll assemble the teams right away," Theimer says. "Although I'd like them to be escorted by soldiers, just in case."

"That won't be a problem," General Gunther says.

Theimer leaves the truck and begins to put together teams of engineers to look through the temple and disarm any remaining explosives. Small groups of soldiers enter the temple to clear the place, while you and your squad step aside.

"What do you make of this situation, Captain?" General Gunther asks you.

>"The Imperials probably left when their front line collapsed and rigged the explosives as a surprise for us."

"Honestly, I have no idea," you say.

"Hopefully, by advisers will think of something," General Gunther says. "Still, you've done a good job, Captain. Just don't stay too far until we know this place is safe. I might need you for something else."

You sit back and wait for the engineers to do their jobs. Most of the soldiers stand outside the temple on the lookout in case Imperial forces arrive. DuLac, who seems to have just returned from her own mission, walks up to you.

"I heard the Imperials left us a few presents," she says.

"Nothing we couldn't handle," you say. "How was your patrol?"

"They didn't have much," DuLac says. "Less than a dozen scouts altogether and I went looking as far as I could."

"Might as well enjoy the low-risk jobs," you say. "We get few enough of those as it is."

"On the contrary," DuLac says. "It's the risk that makes it all worth it."

"That's certainly one way to look at it," you say.

The engineers work until a few hours past sunset until they're satisfied that the temple is safe. Most of the soldiers move in, but a few remain outside the temple to stand watch. It's all standard procedure.

But none of you can sleep well.

The reconnaissance team never returned.
