You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, and the Ninth Division's Commandos are now complete. You found a promising young student in the Academy with a Zanpakuto that even managed to impress you, and promised to take her under your wing as your new Sixth Seated officer.

The girl, Mirai, has arrived at her new home, where Kai is showing her around. Meanwhile the sixth class of ten unseated Ninth Division members are going through their round of firearms training. The loud cracks and the disappointment in Iba's voice tell you exactly what you need to know: most of your subordinates barely know what end the bullet comes out of, let alone how to hit something with it. But the way you've laid out your hypothetical unit deployment, you don't need more than 120 to 150 soldiers who can hit something with a gun anyway.

As for your own morning, the next few hours are spent handling your dreaded nemesis: paperwork. Gods, is there ever a lot of paperwork involved in being a Captain! You could always push off some of your own work onto your Lieutenant, like Isshin usually does, but since your Lieutenant is your adopted daughter you'd feel kind of bad. Not to mention she'd probably find a way to exact revenge.

“This suuuucks,” you yawn, looking over the fourth requisition form in a row. Then it occurs to you: you're faster than this! You're at least the third or fourth fastest Shinigami alive, for crying out loud... and your eyes and hands need to be just as quick as the rest of your body.

After that revelation, work proceeds much quicker. A massive pile moves one sheet at a time from your inbox to your outbox, and before long you've wrapped up an entire day's worth of paperwork in a grand total of twenty minutes.

Rangiku knocks at the door to your office before poking her head in. “You still at it, Captain?”

In truth they're barely legible, but who the hell even reads all this crap anyway? Nobody you've ever head of. So far as you're aware these papers all go into storage and end up getting recycled into more paperwork for you to fill out.

The only canon description I can recall stated that there were around 10,000 Shinigami at any one time, which may or may not include the "special" duties like the Onmitsu.

Mirai's situation probably got Riku wondering: How do you even get sickness in the afterlife?
And since the only one we can think of to answer that question is Unohana, the library it is.

Actually, Japan, as well as Korea and China, use inked seals more than signatures (though that's been changing for a while now).

It would make complete sense for us to have a special seal we keep on our person for signing official documents.

"Actually," you admit, "it turns out I can finish a whole day's worth of paperwork in minutes... truly, my speed even astounds myself sometimes!"

"Careful," Rangiku mutters, "your head gets much fatter and you'll get some mean wind resistance."

You laugh, straightening the papers on your desk and springing to your feet. "I'm going to go down to the library. There's some stuff I wanted to check out while I'm thinking about it."

Rangiku raises her eyebrow at the notion. "The library? That doesn't sound much like you."

"I can read just fine you know," you frown. "I'll have you know I'm quite well-read, all things considered."

"Yeah, yeah," she replies, waving you off. "I'll handle things here, Captain."

The main library in the Seireitei is a rather imposing building, and not at all pleasant to be in. The tower is unheated for fear of a fire spreading through the books, and the lack of windows means it gets stuffy in there during the summer months and freezing cold during the winter. But if you want to know more about any one of a nearly infinite number of topics, this is the place to come.

Now... where to begin?

You manage to find a few books tucked away here and there about the Quincy, and learn a bit about your past life. Little exists detailing their techniques, aside from mention of how Blut works. Apparently there's an offensive form as well, which revolves around the arteries. You figured that much was possible, but it's good to confirm it. Mostly what you find is history.

After the defeat of the Quincy King at the hands of Head-Captain Yamamoto himself some thousand years ago, the Quincy went into hiding. Their numbers dropped quickly, but they could still muster some incredibly talented fighters. The strongest of these were termed the “Sternritter”, or “Star-Knights”, recognized as the strongest five Quincy at any given time. That you were once counted among them makes sense now, given how powerful you've become.

There's some mention that the Sternritter in the old days were stronger for having taken in the blood of their King, but with their King gone that was no longer an option. Many Quincy opted to return to older, more archaic means of combat, while others decided to innovate and improve upon existing techniques. Your name is mentioned once or twice as having been involved in the adoption of modern firearms among the Quincy.

Then, you find it. A book focusing on the last great battle between Shinigami and Quincy, in which is a section written by Yoruichi... about you.

You're not entirely sure you want to read this, but you've already started.

By the time Yoruichi had been called in you had killed or severely wounded some seventy members of the Fourth Division. They weren't clean shots, either: Rosa Rosette seemed to favor shooting at nonvital areas, so that healers and supporting troops would have to spend time and resources dealing with the wounded instead of killing your subordinates. The previous Lieutenant under Unohana's command bled out because his squadmates were too afraid of your accurate fire to recover him.

No wonder she blames Riku. Probably also blames a portion of her division for being so cowardly.

That war is also likely the cause of 4th division being barred from the human world.
>>
>>39964029
Ha ha we were a jerk.
>>
>>39964119
we were trying to buy time so our subordinates could get away, that mean shooting to disable not kill. we essentially sacrificed ourselves so a few low-rankers could escape.
>>
>>39964029
No, you can't really fall into that trap. Rosa Rosette isn't you, and you're not her. It's easy to forget that sometimes.

Rosa engaged with Yoruichi as her own unit was withdrawing, expecting a total defeat. Yoruichi praised Rosa's dedication to the task, describing in no shortage of detail how she fought on despite suffering at least a half-dozen fatal wounds.

The point where she seems to have lost her will to go after the enemy was when Rosa, dying from a pierced heart, grabbed Yoruichi by her ankle in a meager attempt to keep her from pursuing.

"Are you alright?" Kaoru asks nervously, standing over you as you quickly shut the book.

Your eyes burn a little as you look up to answer her.

>Yeah. Fine. You?
>Not really, no.
>Actually, I don't understand Hollowfication and I feel like I should. Help me find some books on it?

Officially they fought because the Quincy were destabilizing the balance between worlds. Which always seemed like a weak reason to me as it suggest one of two things. Either the Quincy techniques can violate conservation of energy by completely destroying the spiritual energy that comprises a hollow. The second possibility is that when killed the energy that formed the hollow will permanently stay on earth. However, in canon the spirit energy that Ichigo was putting off was absorbed by his friends and would presumably be carried into the spirit realms by their deaths. Of course I haven't read bleach in a while and might be completely wrong.

>>
>>39964481

In canon Shinigami thought the energy was destroyed.

Laws of thermodynamics were not yet understood. Once the law was out there, since Kisuke was gone, I doubt anyone would ask about it.

Mayuri seemed more about Mad Science then boring ground work shit. He would not think much on it.

Later revealed in the Quincy war arc Ywach was eating souls killed by Quincy and the Quincy souls themselves as food for his life.
>>
>>39964531
Eh, his heart won't even start beating again for like a decade?
And after that it takes him ninety years to wake up at which point he shuffles all the Quincy power around for the fuck of it, managing to kill both Ichigo and Uryu's parents in an impressive jackass combo.
>>
>>39964563
It's doubtful the quincies even knew what Yhawch was doing in his state.
>>
>>39964589
I should clarify, I don't blame the average Quincy. In fact, I agree that they probably didn't know whats going on. Neither do I blame the average Shinigami they are just doing their duty. I blame the leadership of both sides.

“Not really, no,” you admit with a heavy sigh. “And you?”

“About the same,” she admits. “I just can't believe Hachigen's gone and Tessai's been exiled... it doesn't make any sense. Your Division holding up okay?”

You shrug. “They lost their top six seats. I filled those seats today, but I dunno if things are going to be good for a while.”

There's a long moment where neither of you are willing to speak, as you wipe away the beginnings of a tear from one eye. You're a Captain now. Nobody should ever see you weak. “And your corps?”

“I'm in charge now,” Kaoru tells you, removing her glasses to clean them as she speaks. “Thankfully there's not much going on right now in terms of our official duties.”

“At least there's that.”

Kaoru sits down on the floor next to you, pushing aside several papers about the history of the Quincies. “Do you have any idea what's going on?”

You meet her question with an uncomfortable silence.

“That's why I'm here,” she admits. “I don't know what they're saying Tessai and Hachigen got involved in, and it bothers me.”

Involving more people is a bad idea currently.

It makes them both a risk and puts them at risk.

That's a pretty big 'just'.

as in, just that they were hollowfied.
>>
>>39964919
Then that raises the question of how we know what was going on. So she would at least know that we were involved somehow.

It may sound harsh, but if all that's at stake is her feelings, it's better that she remains in the dark. We simply can't let anyone know that we know of any strange happenings that night, except for our very inner circle. Not to mention, the more she knows, the more likely she is to come to Aizen's attention.
>>
>>39965033

“We need to talk,” you tell Kaoru, standing to put the reading material back on the shelf. For her part Kaoru looks at you in confused silence, but nods in agreement.

You take her to your office, carefully ensuring that you use Tenkotsuki's illusion-dispelling ability.

“I can understand your paranoia,” your sword muses, “but there is nothing here to dispel.”

“Worth doing,” you mutter.

Kaoru looks at you strangely again as she sits on the low couch you had moved into your office for guests. You take a seat behind your desk and fold your hands carefully in front of you. “The topic you want to investigate,” you tell her, “is dangerous. Hollowfying itself carries a death sentence, and researching it too deeply can get you banished. Are you sure you want to know more?”

After a few moments of thought, your old friend speaks her mind. “If it explains what happened to Tessai and Hachi, please do.”

You sigh, before explaining to her what Hollowfication means, and how the missing officers were sentenced to die as Hollows. You explain the trial process surrounding Kisuke and Tessai's involvement, and the lack of real evidence for their guilt. You mention that they and the Hollowfied officers were rescued by an unknown party, and likely used reiatsu-blocking gigai to hide themselves in the human world.

“There's a lot you're not telling me, I think,” she mutters. “But I can understand why. You've already told me much, Captain, and if there comes a time you'd be comfortable telling me more, I'd welcome it.”

“Sorry I can't be more informative,” you apologize. “It's a touchy subject.”

Kaoru nods sternly. “Believe me, I understand. But thanks for telling me that much. I'll keep my nose out of it, at least for the time being.”

You quietly agree with her that it's probably for the best.

Yoruichi seems to be in high spirits when you meet her in the underground training area. “What's with the loopy grin?” you ask.

She shrugs. “Good stuff's happened all day long. Woke up feeling good, got a message from Kisuke saying they've settled into some backwater town in the living world, and Little Bee didn't go berserk when I told her I sprung them all.”

“That's good,” you nod happily. “I started my division training with those crap rifles Mayuri sent us, and read a book.”

“Oh yeah? Which book?” Yoruichi asks you as you both stretch.

You decide to lie for now and tell her it was a book of American poetry. No need to tell her the truth in this case, you've known for decades how Rosa's death has weighed on her conscience. Best not to bring it up again.

“We'll have to head to Hueco Mundo at some point,” you muse. “Take our “acquaintances” some clothes, and track down those Asauchi.”

Yoruichi nods in agreement. “Sounds like a plan. We'll go in a day or two, give it some time. Wait for the best opportunity.”

“Until then,” you grin, trying to call up the Hollow mask you've been stuck with against your will. May as well learn how to make use of it now.

Unfortunately the mask fizzles out of existence almost as soon as you draw it out. You can even hear Tenkotsuki giggling at your utter failure to manifest the damn thing.

Yoruichi smirks from behind her own mask, which rests on the side of her head. “Performance issues? Don't worry, these things happen.”

“Shut up,” you shoot back even as Yoruichi's own mask cracks in half.

This is going to take a while.

That would have been boring. At least here we can get involved in the fallout of the world wars and interact with other shinigami. Doing nothing but grinding would be pretty pointless. We'll advance at the rate that makes sense for the story and it's not like we slack off on trying to improve ourselves.
>>
>>39966126
It wasn't QUITE that simple a juncture, but yes. That was one of the sets of decisions that decided who knew what and where people would end up.

Good point. I actually had it on a previous version and it must've gotten trimmed. It'll be there for the next updated version.
