You’re Kaine Treaty. Several hours ago you were drafted by the Fleet, strapped into an Orbital Drop pod, and unceremoniously launched at Caedina, the only world inhabited by humans.

http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Voyage

You’ve started to make your way west. You walk at a brisk pace, sticking to the side of a dirt road. All around you is the bleak and gray landscape of Caedina, the only color is the brown of the road, and the rust of the nearby shacks.

From the first day Caedina was discovered, everyone was told how unsustaining and desolate this world was. Now you’ve seen it first hand. You don’t even think you’re walking on a dirt road, it’s really a fine sand, perhaps a type of stone which was eroded down.

A faint wind from the south picks up some of the grains of sand, throwing them into the nearby shacks. You’ve opted to stick to the side of the road, your heavy metallic feet landing softly on the grey stone which is the natural ground of this world.

As you start to make your way into the city, named the same as the world, Caedina, the sounds of fighting start to intensify.
You hear the barking of heavy ballistic rounds, the whine of plasma bolts, and something else.

The constant sounds of weapons make painfully aware of your isolated situation. You keep your hand on the grip of your weapon, but you’re careful to have proper trigger discipline. You still remember the swift kicks you received when you left your finger on the trigger. That was when you were roughly 14 years old, and the Avadora was boarded.

Thanks to your Stalker suit, your senses are sharpened, enhanced ten fold. You hear the creak and groan of the abandoned shacks around you, the swaying of opened doors, and the hum of an abandoned car the street over.

Sticking to the side of the road, you move effortlessly and silently, prowling in the shadows of the low made buildings.

The shadows make you think about the light of Caedina, which is faint, fainter even than the halls of the Avadora. You assume it’s because of the stellar cloud which drapes the entire system, absorbing the light of the forming star.

Sparing a glance up, you can see the faint reds, oranges, and yellows of the stellar cloud above. The millions of particles of dust shine faintly through the thin atmosphere of Cadeina, covered by the occasional thin wisp of a cloud.

Past the thin clouds and air of Caedina, you can spot a series of flashes which form a chain across the sky. The battle still rages on in space.
You decide it would be better to pick up the pace, instead of gawking at the sky.

As your hurry towards the closest source of gunfire, you try to get your radio to work.
You ‘think’ about your radio, and a small menu of numerically identified channels appears in the corner of your vision.

You pick a station at random, but all you get is a click followed by a burst of static. Trying several other channels yields the same results. You give a shrug and continue your walk.

You are not one to worry about “why” your radio isn’t working. On the Avadora, nearly everything was broken at one point. Perhaps the “Radio Silence” was still being maintained. You could be jammed, or the radio could simply not be working. You’ll have to talk to 7’s if you ever live to talk to him again.

After about an hour of marching, you summit a small hill which the road was built on, and suddenly the sound of gunfire intensifies.
>>
>>39976747

In the range of 300 meters away, you see a small tower rise above the small buildings around it. The tower belongs to a longer building, you can’t really remember the word for it… a schapel?

A large area of the land around the tower has been cleared, a small waist high wall surrounds the perimeter of the land.
You hadn't realized it until now, sea of small buildings which make up Caedina leave little openings. Shacks seem to pile up on the roads, giving a claustrophobic feel.
The area surrounding the.. chapel is the first opening since you’ve entered the depressing city.

The flash of a weapon pulls your eyes to a group of soldiers which are taking cover behind several run down buildings built right up next to the wall. Some lay down suppressing fire while the rest of the group make their way towards the wall.

In response a bright flash of light is emitted from the chapel tower, a bolt of high energy plasma arcing towards the soldiers. They hunch down deeper in their cover when the first flash came. The bolt of plasma sails past were one soldier was a moment ago, and continues on to the corner of a nearby building, eating through the thin metal, and continuing off into the distance.

You crouch down in the shade of a nearby building, watching the action below you.
The soldiers fighting their way towards the chapel are Orbital Drop troopers, their full body metal armor making it obvious.
>>
>>39976788
The sniper in the chapel clearly an enemy, but the weapon he’s using nags at your mind.
It isn’t until you see it fire a second time that you realize the Fleet use a similar technology for their ship’s weapons. So it’s not exactly alien technology, but that only raises more questions.

Regardless, you need to make a decision, these are the first living souls you’ve seen since you’ve landed on this planet.

The soldiers seem to have stopped their advance, crouched behind the closest building to the wall, they seem to be making some sort of plan.
What shall you do?

Good question!
It's mostly going to be 1d100 for now.
I used the 3d10 vs DC20 or whatever in the last quest, but I found that system is only appealing when you have a "magic" or "energy" mechanic. Something to alter the rolls basically.

So for now, it's 1d100, but I'm open to suggestions

You decide that linking up with friendly forces is your first objective, rather than walking into the line of fire of sniper.

Keeping low to the ground, you sprint from building to building. You think the group of soldiers has the sniper's attention, but you don’t see any merit in dieing a fool.

Your suit helps you make the dead sprints, covering the distances much quicker than you would have on your own. After about 5 minutes of moving from cover to cover, you hear arguing voices around the corner.

You pause for a moment to compose yourself. You straighten your back, which is difficult somewhat after the hunched, stalking posture you’ve had for the past several hours.

You prepare to take the step around the corner, then it suddenly hits you.

You’re terrible with people.
You’re terrible people, and you’re supposedly wearing an officer’s “uniform”. Not only will you have to have social interaction, but you’ll also need to lead people.

“I say we just blow it the fuck up”
“Nah, this city is ours, we can’t just blow up random buildings”
“What about a smoke screen?”
“No, what about a flash bang?”

The voices of the arguing soldiers quickly fade as you jog away.
You’ve decided that you’ll sneak into the chapel yourself, you’re still suspicious about this sniper, is it a human? A xeno? A robot? You’re curious, and you’re not the “shoot first, ask questions later”.
In ten minutes, you’ve circled around the the wall of the chapel, and crouched behind the wall surrounding the courtyard.

You tighten the grip on your rifle, then vault the wall around the courtyard.
You’re not really sure what’s the best way to sneak in broad daylight on flatground, so you decide to go for a mix of stealth and speed.
>>
>>39977741
Sticking low to the ground, hunched over, you try to cover as much ground as possible.

As you sprint, you think about what you’ll do. Once you reach the chapel, you’ll enter the building, clear it, confront the sniper, then signal the soldiers. Maybe you could use your grappling hook.

What was the soldier's plan again?
They wanted to use smoke and flashbangs to provide cover, and assault the building.
You know what they mean by smoke, the grenades dispense a cloud of thick smoke which provides cover, but what’s a flash grenade?

Your mind starts to wander as you near the building.

A flash bang… like in the movies?
You bought a few old Earth movies, the tactical soldiers always used flash grenades before entering a building. What do those do again?

Less than one hundred meters away.

That’s right, they emit a bright flash, people would be blinded, and they couldn’t hear.
You wonder if your suit can do that?
Flash bang. huh not-

You would describe it like a crack, as if your eyes were being slammed into a wall of light. Your ears ring, you can’t hear anything. The high pitch whine reminds you of the fire alarms of the Avadora, when the forges would always catch loose cloth, or hair on fire.

You think you’re kneeling in the ground. Your hands covering your “face”.
You don’t know how long passes, but slowly the ringing dies out, and color returns to the world.
You don’t know why your helmet didn’t block the flashbang, but maybe it’s because you ordered the suit to use it. Now is not the time though, you’ll have to talk to 7’s if you survive.

Slowly you get to your feet, looking around. You’re less than 50 meters from the chapel. For once, you’re thankful for the faint and dead light of Caedina. It doesn’t hurt your eyes too much. Looking up to the chapel tower, you can see a glint of light.

The glint of light off a scope.
>>
>>39977757
Then there is a high pitch whine, much different from before, and a bolt of plasma is racing towards you.

Time seems to slow. The Graybeards on the Avadora use to always say “Time seem to stand still” during a life threatening part of the story. Is that one of those moments? Are you about to die? Or maybe it’s the suit, another amazing ability.

Painstakingly quicker than everything else, the bolt of plasma approaches you. If you don’t move, it seems like it will impact the center of your chest .

You have to move. You have to move quick.

roll 1d100 to dodge.

No hard feelings m8's. Here is the scale

rolls are on a 1d100
only the first three rolls count
crits, great rolls, fails, and crit fails count up to the 5th roll
1 is a crit fail
2-7 are fails which win out against anything less than 90
8-20 are bad rolls, something bad will happen but nothing spectacular
21-50 are low rolls, you won't have any success
51-79 are medium rolls you have some success
80-89 are high rolls, something good will happen
90-99 are great rolls, something good and unexpected might happen
100 is a crit

Crits beat fails, crits and crit fails cancel out, fails beat "good rolls"
aka, the 6 beats the 91
So 6 beats the
>>
>>39977869
...I'll just take that as "We won't die right here, right now."
>>
>>39977869
>2-7 are fails which win out against anything less than 90

Wow we literally just made it with that 91
>>
>>39977869
So we will pretty much always fail? This system seems heavily weighted to failure
>>
>>39977914
No, we got the 6, right?
>>
>>39977869
I think by those rules, the 91 beats the six. Since it's more than 90.
>>
>>39977941
>3 bad results, 20% chance on a d100
>1 neutral result, 30%
>4 good results, 50%

Not that bad.
>>
>>39977981
That's pretty much weighted for success
>>
>>39977869
>"good rolls"
Gonna assume good rolls are in the 51-89 range?
>>
>>39978027
Yeah. 50% success, 30% nothing, and just 20% fail.
Our problem is that we roll shitty results.
>>
>>39977869
>2-7 are fails which win out against anything less than 90
>ANYTHING LESS THAN a 90
Wouldn't that mean they lose against something greater than a 90? So the 91 beats the 6.
>>
>>39977959
Which is within 2-7. So the 91 beats it.
>>
>>39978166
I think he means them to cancel each other out. So with the 6,61, and 91, the 6 and 91 cancel each other and we are left with the 61, a medium success.
In terms of writing, I'd wager the PC throws himself to the ground like a good grunt under fire in the open, and then gets back up.
>>
>>39977869
>aka, the 6 beats the 91
>2-7 are fails which win out against anything less than 90
91 isn't less than 90

Sorry for the wait, the fire alarm went off in my building

Faster. Faster. You pull your body to the right, shifting your weight, doing anything to get out of the day.

You suppose at this moment, some great metaphor could be drawn up, something about man struggling against his inevitable death, or some bull shit light that.
You don’t really care, you’re about to die.

Then something clicks for you. You remember the fool who got shot in the hanger.
He tried to dodge the bullet, his senses, much like yours, were enhanced, his speed greater than the average human. The bullet still hit him.

Your mind races. The bolt of plasma less than half a meter away.

What’s the difference between you and that man?
You have a helmet. A neurological uplink. He had to type all his commands into a screen.
You can send commands, even now. There is really only one you need.
You need to move.

You picture your body moving to the right, away from the plasma.
It’s like you’ve been frozen this entire time. Your body suddenly starts to move, nearly as fast as the bolt of plasma. A step to the right, the rest of your body flowing after.

You can feel the force on every inch of your frame, it’s a lot like when you were falling in your Orbital Drop pod. Instead of falling towards the ground, you’re moving to the right at tremendous speeds. You can feel all your internal organs pressed to the left as the sudden change in speed plays hell with your biology.

You’re clear, your head, body, all vital organs moved away from the plasma. You’re not in the clear though. The rest of your body is still move after your center of mass.
You don’t know if you neglected it, or it was some sort of sacrifice, but your left arm collides with bolt of plasma. The plasma starts to chew its way through the armor on your forearm.

Thankfully, the world returns to normal speed as soon as the greedy bolt of energy starts to boil away your skin.
>>
>>39978738
Time explodes back into normality, and several things happen at once.
Firstly, and most importantly, it seems that the plasma bolt shot clean through your arm.

Your suit’s compensators start to shift, halting your sudden change in speed. You feel like you’re slamming against the inside of your suit. As if you’re being thrown around inside a metal can. The hydraulics and servos through the suit straining to stop your motion, much like when you were landing in the O.D. pod.

The moment you regain control of your suit, you go for a dead sprint to the nearest cover. You active the distortion field, making it more difficult for the sniper to aim directly at you.

Your throw yourself the last couple feet into the wall. Your heavy metal suit making a dent in the surprisingly thick steel walls of the chapel.

Safely in cover, you try to do something for your wound. This entire time you’ve had a death grip on your rifle, but with more pressing matters on hand, you quickly deposit the weapon on the ground.

In a panicking state, you take a look at your wound.
The nickel sized hole punched clean through your armor and flesh, but there is surprisingly little blood.

Already, a grey paste seeps out from the suit around the wound, filling the gap in your arm. The medical paste isn’t really doing the job since the gel just falls through the hole in your arm into the ground.

You try cupping your hand around one end of the wound. After several minutes, the paste has filled the wound, and on the exterior it’s hardened into a protective cast.

You flex your hand several times. It’s rather painful, but you should be able to survive the day.

Picking up your rifle, you take the moment to breath while under cover.

You’ve started to gather why you thought the rifle was so familiar.
You’ve seen it before, it’s a hunting rifle.
>>
>>39978758
Before the Fleet found Caedina, the Fleet stopped above a lush jungle world, filled with primitive life. As a boy, you accompanied the Captain of the Avadora on a hunting trip down on the surface, along with several other members of the ship.

The captain was a kind man, and explained how the rifle worked on the shuttle ride down to the surface. The superheated bolt of plasma would shoot through any material with ease, rock, steel, you name it.

The reason they made great hunting weapons though, was because of the cauterizing effect of the plasma. Any wounds made with the hunting rifle were instantly burned closed, keeping the kill from spoiling.

So suppose that saved you from death by blood lost.
Guess that makes you the prey.
Still in cover, you need to decide your next move.

Any peace and quiet you could have had is cut short through, as several explosions rock the ground beneath you, accompanied by automatic weapons fire.

You can tell the fire is coming from the direction of the soldiers, so you would guess they’re assaulting the building.

You’ll need to think fast.

I realize that some people aren't happy with the twice, so I'll say from 90-99 anything closer to 100 wins out against anything closer to 1.=, and vice versa.

So, a 97 is 3 away from 100, and wins against a 6, which is 5 away from a 1.

On the flip side, a 6, 5 away from 1, beats a 91 which is 9 away from 100.

For future references.

And for the sake of us dice monkeys, please stay biased towards the sucesses!
>>
>>39979022
Alright nigga, I will
>>
>>39978788
You’ve lost the element of surprise.

getting back to your feet, you feel your entire body protest. Getting shot, and moving at G inducing speeds seem to put a strain on mortal frames.

You hear the bark of automatic weapons fire approach, with the occasional whine of the plasma rifle. You don’t really know what the soldiers can do, besides lay down suppressing fire, unless they wanted to take out the building.

Sending the neurological command to your suit, the grappling hook unfolds itself from your right forearm. Switching your rifle to your left hand, you hold the weapon gingerly with your wounded arm.

You move off to the side of the building, so that you can see the tower wall itself.
Taking aiming with the grappling hook, you can’t really think of any way to fire it, besides picturing it fire.

Almost mirroring the scene in your head, the grappling bolt launches from your wrist with a hiss. The hook lands just short of the window, embedding into the metal wall of the tower. With a thought, a powerful motor starts, pulling you up the tower at a quick pace.

You’ve never done any climbing involving rope. When high places needed to be reached, sections of the gravitational field could be shut off on the Avadora. After getting off the ground, you brace your feet against the wall of the tower, and “walk” up it.

Your feet are struggling to find traction on the smooth wall of the tower, as you start to grow frustrated, there is a soft metallic click, and your feet are planted firmly on the tower. It seems that your magnetized soles have activated.

In less than half a minute you’ve scaled the wall. As you reach the end of your rope, you’re just high enough to reach the lip of the tower, though your hands are full.
>>
>>39979371
You see a clip on your belt seems to find on a ring attached to the butt of your weapons stock. Attaching the weapon to your hip, you strain to grab a hold of the walkway above.

It takes a few tries, but you eventually succeed.
Getting the grappling hook unattached from the wall also proves challenging, it required a decent amount of force, and made too much noise, but you finally succeed.

Switching your weight to your left arm proves painful, and you quickly grab onto the ledge with your other hand.

Getting onto the ledge took a lot more effort than actually scaling the wall, but you eventually hoist yourself onto the ledge, causing pain to shoot up your left arm.

You detach your weapon from your waist, clutching it with your right hand. You take a moment to look around the top of the tower. There are steel walls, with most of the space taken up by a large bell.

That’s when you notice the sniper, or rather, the boy and the rifle barrel he has pointed at you.

Several tense moments pass as the gun fire from below impacts around the edge of the tower. The wide eyes of the child before burn through the metal mask on your face.

You can see it in his eyes.
He’s already shot you, he won’t hesitate to shoot you again.

Your weapon is already in your hands. With your suit, you should be able to move faster than he can. It doesn’t matter that he’s a boy.
You don’t see any other choice. You either kill this boy here, or you die.

You have to move faster.

The gun fire seems to die down. The boy, with darker skin than most, rich brown eyes staring you down, finger on the trigger.

As quickly as possible, you bring your weapon up, ready to kill him.
You’re too slow.

There’s a hiss, and a hole is burned through your right shoulder. Another hiss, and a bolt skims your side, below your ribs, taking out another chunk of your flesh, you can’t be for certin, but the burning sensation is on the side of your body, rather than inside, so you don’t think it was a direct hit.

Both times the boy pulled the trigger, he’s brown eyes stared blankly at you. Unregistering, uncaring. Each time he pulled the trigger, he didn’t even blink.

Someone is screaming, you think it’s you.
Through the searing pain, you level the muzzle of your weapon on the boy. As his weapon gives a high pitch whine, as the boy starts to pull his trigger for a third time, you pull yours.

Your weapon gives a deep crack, the butt of the rifle kicking in your wounded hip were you planted it .

The massive round exits the barrel of your weapon, rushing towards the boy.
You can see how the round punches through the flesh between those two dead eyes. For a second, an almost peaceful expression.
>>
>>39979985
While you're here, could you at least learn to FUCKING CAPITALIZE AND PUNCTUATE?! For fuck's sake, every time I read your shit no matter what you say, good or bad or smart or dumb, I get a bit pissy.

Then the round exits out the back of his head, a much larger exit hole is made, a fine red mist and dark red blood follow after the round.

You can see the blood splatter the walkway around the boy, while some of it falls far, far below. The deep crimson standing out against the pale blue of the sky of Caedina.

The body force of the round kicks the head of the boy back, the rest his body following after him. For a moment, he seems to balance perfectly, then all at once, he plummets down below.

You slump down on the ground, letting your weapon fall from your grip. You can hear the yelling of voices below. The heavy thud of boots running up stairs.

You’re tired, very tired. Already, you can see the grey gel filling up your two fresh wounds.
You just want to rest. Rest your eyes.

>Grapple down the tower
>Head down the stairs

Okay, here's something.
The new World of Darkness games use a d10-system. The usual DC to suceed at any given task is 6, so 50% chance. Usually, several dice are cast.
A 1 on this system merely cancels one sucess, unless there are no sucesses, then it's a critical failure.
Any 10 can be cast again and the resulting sucesses be added to the total number of sucesses. In our case this might result in a bit more rolling, but it's massively simplified with the same odds of sucess and smaller odds of failure - there's a 10% chance per die for a 1, yes, but 2-5 don't cancel sucesses unlike the 1-20 we got now.

Worth a thought?

I think we could do it like we did until now. You call for a roll, and count the first 3. If there's a 10 or more among them, you as QM get the privilege of rerolling them.
Note: 1s that come out of rerolls don't count towards critical fails, they're just no sucesses.

Still on the ground, you decide that rest is the best option.
Every inch of your body is tender, screaming out from just the weight of your armor resting on you.

You pull up a menu on your HUD, the medical page you opened before.
On a green figure that represents you, you see three red dots. On is on your left forearm, one is on your right shoulder, and the last one is a half circle between your ribs and hip. Seems you were right, you were just grazed there.

You see a list of painkillers and stimulants which have already been injected into you. Looks like the suit does most of the medical actions on its own. Which is fine, you never considered yourself someone who could treat wounds.

A little log below the list of injected medicines give a brief explanation. It seems like you would have passed out from shock after getting shot twice, but your suit prevented that.

So it looks like your suit saved you again.

You note that the “Wound Sealing Gel” is at 60%. You can maybe survive 5-6 shots, which makes you shudder a little bit. How many times do they expect you to get shot is a single deployment?

Below, you can hear more shouting, and running, but surprisingly no gun fire.

Looking around the room, you really don’t see much. The bell takes up the majority of the tower, but you can see a couple bottles where the boy was sitting. You see there is also several metallic boxes, which you think might be battery packs for the rifle.

You can see the rifle was dropped onto the floor of the tower, maybe you’ll pick it up for yourself later. You think it would be bad for the troopers to find you in the tower room with the rifle that was shooting them in your hands. They’ll probably think you’re the sniper. That, and you’re too tired.

After several blissful, yet painful minutes, you struggle to push yourself into a sitting position, leaning against the wall. Your rifle sits in your lap.
>>
>>39981440
Just when your eyelids start to grow heavy, a kick shatters the silence of the tower, and several soldiers rush into the room.

“Looks like Jacks was right, that boy on the ground was the sniper”. The O.D. soldier in the leader says, lowering his rifle.

One of the soldiers in a Jumper combat suit crouches down next to you.
“Shit Sarg, check out this dead stalker. Can’t believe that kid took him down”.

You don’t really have the energy to even say anything, so you just lay there. The Jumper spots your rifle and starts to reach for it,
“Bastards even got some ammo on him”.

You try to hit his hand away, but both your hands are clutching your rifle, and you can’t seem to loosen your grip, so you end up pointing your rifle at the trooper.

The Jumper jumps back when he sees the muzzle of your rifle level “Shit! Hey man, sorry, we’re on your side alright?”

The leader, Sarge, walks over to you. He grabs Jumper by his collar and pulls him aside,
“Eli you dumbass, you don’t even check if someone’s dead before you try to take their shit”.

Eli crosses his arms defensively, “What can i say, sir? It’s survival of the smartest”

Sarge smacks the Jumper across the head, “You dumbass, you can’t even get that saying right”.

You shouldn’t be this tired. Maybe it’s the adrenaline wearing off.
Even as you start to question your current state of drowsiness, you see that your suit is already injecting you with a new cocktail of drugs.

You can feel control return to your limbs. You didn’t realize it, but you were blissfully numb to the pain up to this point, which explains your lack of control.

You start to get to your feet with a groan, the Sergeant moves to help you, but you wave him off.

When you stand, the soldiers all snap to attention.
You’re not quite sure what gives you away as an officer, but the Orbital Drop Troopers seem to have noticed it quickly.

“Sir! Apologies, Captain, for my subordinates actions. I’m Sergeant Dover, sir. We’re securing this area for the landing of the first wave of marines”.

You return the salute as best you can, though it’s rather difficult with a hole in your shoulder. You give a nod, which the soldiers take as an “at ease”.

It looks like you're impersonating a Captain. A commissioned officer.
In the Fleet, that’s almost the same as impersonating a nobleman of old Earth. You’ll be lucky if they just killed you when they found out you’re just a Forgeworker on the Avadora.

The Sergeant continues to talk as you imagine all the ways they could kill you for impersonating an officer. “Sir, you are the highest ranking officer we’ve come into contact with since landing here, sir. As the chief NCO of A-17 squad, I put us under your command, sir”. The Sergeant gives you another salute, which you return, in a daze.

“We lost contact with our Staff Sergeant after some bastard rammed his pod into our Staff Sergeants during the drop” The Sergeant says solemnly, but picking up almost immediately, “Pardon the language sir! Your orders?”

You stand there a bit dumbstruck. You’re far, far above your head. He said something about securing this landing zone? Maybe you should do that? You could always jump, and end your misery early.

Forgot to mention that Soma made it layered DC
So if the DC was 10 for hitting something, than a 15 DC was hitting something important, and 20 DC was along that same track of mind.
Also remembered he still used his Banished quest success system of needed 2 dice to pass the DC to succeed, and that 3 dice succeeding gave a great result.

Still in shock, your limbs refuse the commands you give them at first, but eventually you get your legs to work.

You make your way over to the plasma rifle and the battery packs.
There is 4 battery packs which you pick up along with the rifle.

“Sergeant”, a heavily synthesized voice rasps out, “I want a team in this tower to cover everyone else, do they have a long range weapon? If not they can use this rifle” You raise the weapon slightly for emphasis.

The Sergeant shakes his helmeted head, “They do sir!” he says in a brisk manner.

You don’t actually recall speaking since you’ve put on the heavy armor, the synthesized voice is rather intimidating. Unlike the other Trooper’s voices, which most likely sound the same as their normal voices, yours lack any human emotion.
You’ll have to speak with 7’s about that as well.

You nod, you’ll have to find a use for the rifle yourself. As you put the battery packs in various pouches on your armor, you continue to pretend being an officer, “ We need to secure this area, so I’ll leave securing the LZ to you. I need to do some reconnaissance of the surrounding area, in the mean time, brief me on the situation. What resistance have you found? Are the comms still down? I also want the status on the rest of the squad”.

You’re not really sure what you’re saying, but you heard the term “LZ” used in a movie though, and it sounds pretty professional to you.

[+ Plasma Rifle : 4 batteries]
The Sergeant gives another crisp salute before turning to the other Troopers, “Eli! Get your ass down below and set up a perimeter around the courtyard, take both fire teams, but leave the doc here”.

The Jumper nods before leading the other troopers in the tower below.

The scaling DC thing was something I did spur of the moment, I'm not sure I'll integrate it into the actual system. The base system is that equipment and a very simple skill system provide modifiers to rolls. Dice must beat a DC, which is modified by circumstance. Two rolls need to succeed to count as a success.

What I'm thinking is that the scaling DC thing will only apply to direct combat. Punching and shooting shit. Everything else will have one flat DC.Anyway, I don't want to impinge on Amidron's show here, so I'll shut up.

Sarg waits for the Troopers to leave before returning his attention to you.
“Sir, fireteam one and three are both intact, but fireteam two has sustained a casualty. The sniper in this tower killed him with a head shot before we could do anything.
Other than the sniper, we’ve ran into disorganized groups of militants. The militants are hostile to being relocated off the planet and have taken up arms.

Any civilians seem to have been relocated to more defensible positions by local law enforcements prior to Drop.

We’ve yet to had contact with the actual enemy, sir. Prior to radio silence, I was told that the only people who actually knew who we’re fighting is High Command, sir. Do you know anything, sir?”

The Sergeant looks at you quizzically. Thankfully, you’re pretending to only be a Captain, which isn’t part of High Command. You simply shake your head.

The Sergeant sighs, but continues talking, “Figures, they won’t even tell the CO’s who we’re fighting… Hell of a day, sir

Other than that, Radio Silence is still being enforced, for reasons beyond me. I think it’s so the damned draftees don’t start screaming before all the boots are on the ground. Pardon my rambling, sir.

First wave of marines should be down in… 2 hours sir. All the LZs should be secured by then.
If you want to do recon, I suggest you head out now, sir. No sense in wasting your time”.

You nod, slinging the rifle onto you back, making sure the strap rests on your left shoulder.
The Sergeant seems to know what he’s doing. He acted professionally, at least you think he did, while giving the report. That is, until he started talking about the “Brass”, but that’s what all NCOs are like. You’ve seen a couple around the ship, all grizzled veterans, and the one thing that would always get them talking is how much they hate the Brass.
>>
>>39983341
You start to descend the stairwell, with Sarg behind you.

“Any particular way you’re going to do recon, sir? We came from the south, and didn’t see anything worth taking a look at”, Sarg calls out over your shoulder.

If you recall, you say additional pods land to the … east of your current positions, while a far greater amount of explosions and gunfire came from the north.

“East”. A voice calls out. You’re not really sure who it belongs to. It grates the ears, a voice which taints every word it utters. Oh, it’s yours.
“Friendlies”

The stairs are filled with the pounding of a single set of heavy boots, resounding from behind you. Every step you take is silent, predatory. Your suit erasing all trace of sound.

“Sounds like a plan, sir. Hardest part of any drop is rounding up the thick skulled Troopers for the battle”. The Sarg’s booming laugh fills up the stairwell.

You try to laugh too, but you don’t think your suits speakers picked up the noise.

Exiting the stairs, you enter a … hall. There are benches arranged around some sort of raised podium, with a square.. box on it. A large golden “t” on the box.
Throughout the hall are clusters of women and children. A single Trooper moves among them, the words “MEDIC” spraypainted onto his chest plate.

“Sarg! Captain!”, the medic snaps off a salute. “Everything alright here, sir, just a couple of scratches and bangs from the run here”.

The Sergeant nods as the two of you continue to walk through the rows of wooden benches, “Good to hear, Doc. Keep an eye on these civies until the first wave is down, then we can extract them back to the Fleet”.

“Yes sir!” The medic calls out as he examines the bandages on a little girl.

As you exit the large double doors of the chapel, Sarg remarks off handedly, “These are the families of the militants, but don’t worry, they’ll be off world soon”.

The Sergeant turns to you, offering a final, crisp salute, “I’ll hold down the fort until you link up with the friendlies, sir! Good hunting!”

You return the salute, turning away from the Sergeant, you set off at a brisk jog back east.
>>
>>39984049

Reaching the edge of the courtyard quickly, you nod to two Trooper keeping watch. They give you a wave as you pass by, but their eyes stay glued to the surrounding buildings.
Everyone in this squad seems to professional soldiers, you doubt you would catch any Draftee, yourself included, acting in such a manner.

Since you’ve already covered this patch of the city, you continue to jog, evoking stealth in exchange for speed. You don’t even feel like you’ve been shot 3 times in the past hour, your suit letting you keep a brisk pace up.

Time flies when you’re running. You’ve always liked it, but because of the cramped nature of the Fleet ships, running long distances isn’t really possible. You enjoy the sensation while it lasts.

In less than 20 minutes you’ve reached your landing zone. You slow down the pace as you reach unfamiliar territory, adopting your crouched posture.

You spend the next half hour quietly making your way through the streets of Caedina. Unlike before, the streets seem to widen as you head away from the center of the city.

After several more minutes of marching, you find the pods which caught your attention earlier. You’d say there are several squads worth of pods embedded into the stone ground, Several dozens meters from the nearest house.

It seems these Troops decided to make for landing in a more clear area, then make their way into the city.

You start to head towards the swarm of crashed pods, but quickly looking over the pods show that their abandoned. Looting the pods crosses your mind, but even from this distance you can tell the soldiers were diligent in securing their gear.

With no real leads on where the soldiers went, you’re about to turn around, when the bark of automatic weapons catch your attention. It’s rather close.
>>
>>39984076
You spend the next five minutes stalking your way back into the city, slowly getting closer to the sound of ballistic weapons. You round a corner however, and find a fork in the road.

Both roads start out straight, but you can’t tell which direction they ultimately take. The gunfire sounds like it’s coming from all around, probably jumping around through the desolate streets.

You don’t know if you can waste any more time searching for this mob of troopers, Sarge might be fighting to defend to point, and the first wave should be arriving soon. You can take the left road, you can take the right road, or you can head back.

Trying to make up your mind, you hear.. something. A faint humming, coming from a nearby alleyway.

What shall you do?

Against your better judgement, you decide to head into the the alleyway to the right.
The melody is something you’ve… heard before. You can’t really describe it. Every time you think you understand how it goes, it slips your mind, and you have to start over again.

You try to be as quiet as possible, your suit allowing you to take silent steps through the alleyway.

The sun starts to fade as the shacks above start to encroach on the small pathway. At one point, you’re walking through a lightless tunnel of cheap steel and junk iron, the only light coming from the ends of both tunnels.

You’ve actually started to lose track of the time you’ve spent going through this alley, but it couldn’t be longer than 10 minutes… could it?

Eventually you emerge through the alleyway, in a street. It seems this one ran parallel to the one you were previously at, you just hadn't noticed it.

The humming cuts out.
“Oh, what do we have here?”
Up until this point, you forgot there even was humming, in the short time you’ve spent walking through the alleyway, you’ve grown so accustomed to the soft rhythm.

Turning to your right, and the source of the voice, you see a strange man sitting on a rock.
The man wears a helmet which reminds you of the ones you saw in Earth orbit before they put you in cryosleep. The front of the face is taken up with a tinted glass cover, while the rest of it is covered in metal.

The helm seems to have both air filters near the mouth AND a rebreather, telling from the various tubes and wires connected to the back of the helm. Over a dirty brown sweater with white strings, the man wears a tactical vest. A knife is attached to the front of the vest, with leather straps rather than proper clips, and several grenades are fastened onto his belt.
>>
>>39984768
The man lacks any sort of exoskeleton or power armor. Plates of metal cover his body, with his shins, forearms, thighs, knees, elbows, and even shoulders covered in the crude metallic armor.

On his right shoulder guard, a simple yellow face with a smile is painted.

“Rude to stare”. The man simply states, his voice rather plain, if not a little higher pitched than the average man you’ve met.

The man isn’t even looking at you, instead, he’s engrossed by a brilliant blue butterfly which hovers around his left hand.

“The strong silent type, eh? They say killers are always like that”.
He doesn’t seem to really be talking to you, his musical voice just talking for the sake of talking.
The man turns away from the beautiful butterfly to look you in the face.

“You ever kill a man before, Kaine? If not a man, what about a boy?”
The man turns back towards the fluttering insect.

“I don’t think we’ve met before”, your synthesized voice rasps. You take a look around, the street seems rather empty. The gunfire seems to have stop.

A light laugh carries out across the empty streets, you’ve heard it before. It clashes with the heavy notes which your suit synthesizes.
“What an intimidating voice you have! Tell me, did the fellas in charge give you that scary voice, that menacing armor, then send you off to go die, or kill children?”

You stand still, not saying anything. This man seems to be mocking you, he keeps prodding, and it starts to stir something inside of you. Anger perhaps.
The fact that this is happening in the middle of a battlefield only serves to confuse you more.

That musical laughter returns, it seems to mock you, but its odd familiarity comforts you at the same time.
“We’ll that’s all the time I have to chit had, until next time, friend”. The man says as he stands, the bright blue butterfly circling around his head. The man snaps of a mock salute, laughing he says “Captain!”

A hand is planted on your shoulder, firmly, but not roughly turning you around. Before you stands an Orbital Drop Trooper, followed by a rather large group of soldiers, which you assume are the ones you’ve been looking for.

The man removes his hand from your shoulder, and snaps into a familiar, crisp salute, “Staff Sergeant Morton of L-9 Squad, sir!”

You return the salute of the Staff Sergeant, nodding afterwards.
“Sir, we’ve ran into militant resistance, and have faced difficulties in reaching the inner city. You’re the first CO we’ve ran into since drop, so I’m placing us under your command.

In addition to L-9 Squad, we’re composed of Drafted Squads 3, 6, and 23.

Your orders sir?”.

Looking past the Staff Sergeant, you can see the members of L-9 have postined themselves in a rough circle around the troops, facing outwards. The Draftees seem to be milling around, most of them look a little bloodied, and tired.

Your orders, Captain?

Just to clarify, to the south is outside of the city. From what you've seen, it's rather barren

Damn, anon. That takes some commitment, glad to have ya

It was a tiring 9 hours straight exam, but I finished it, and now I get to enjoy the best quest.

>As to be briefed on his situation (questions)
Number of militants. Any fortifications/barricades set up. What they're armed with. Any sign of the actual enemy. Any wounded. Any dead. How have the draftees been doing.

>Head south, loop back to the LZ
>>
>>39984974
Oh, I thought you just meant loop around the alleyway and such. In that case,
>Head directly to the LZ

“Follow me. We’ll head south, then loop back to a previously secured LZ for the first wave of marines”.

The Staff Sergeant nods before turning back to the group of soldiers, cupping his hands around where his face would be under his helmet, “YOU HEARD THE CAPTAIN! ON YOUR FEET!”
There is some grumbling as some of the drafted soldiers get on their feet, but it dies out quickly as you begin to head south.

The Troopers stick to either side of the road, no one walking directly down the center.

Staff Sergeant Morton is behind you, but you motion him forward as you walk, “Brief me on your situation, Staff Sergeant. Did you only fight militants, or did you fight the actual enemy? Did you suffer any casualties? What is the militant’s strength? How are the Draftees holding up?”

The Staff Sergeant takes a moment to process all your questions before he begins speaking again, a low, hushed voice.
“All we found were militants, sir. They weren’t really that strong in numbers, or fire power, but I couldn't really fight them directly”

The Morton’s voice gets angrier, but quieter, “Damn Draftees refuse to fight them, sir. I’m not a coward, but if I had my L-9 boys mop up the militants, I know the Draftees would desert. So I’ve been pulling everyone back, I didn’t really have a plan, but I’m glad we found you, sir. These damn civies in Drop Suits need someone higher ranked than me to push ‘em around.”

Morton’s voice returns to its earlier tone as he’s done chewing out the Draftees, “We didn’t lose anyone, but there isn’t much else to report, sir”.

You nod, electing to walk in silence for a while.

You lead the Troopers down the street, and find that the street ends somewhat west of the landing site. You keep marching south, leading the soldiers away from the city. As you start to leave city, Morton catches up to you again, “Sir, where exactly is the LZ located?”.

“To the west, we’re just heading south to pick up anymore stragglers before regrouping with A-17 squad at the LZ”.

This seems to be enough for Morton, as he falls back into the marching file.

You spend another half hour marching south, though you don’t really see anything. The grey and barren landscape stretches on endlessly, you can’t seem to see the coast from this point.
After the half hour mark, you decide you best turn around. Instead of heading directly north, you decide to head north west, your marching path forming a half circle around the south end of the city.

You don’t stop to consider a break, the suits should keep the fatigue away from the Draftees. Just like Sarg reported, you haven’t found anything on your march south, however, even further south, you see the landscape turns into a group of gray hills.

Though, you doubt marching a platoon around in the barren landscape south of the city would be seen as a tactical decision, you might find something of worth in those hills… but probably not.

Besides the hills, you don’t see anything else. The endless grey stretches on until it reaches the sky to the west. In the far east you can see the white caps of mountains, and to the north, you see the occasional explosion erupt in the city.

You think your two hours is about up, at your current pace you’ll arrive after the first wave.
Maybe you should pick the pace up.

Your orders, captain?
>Head further south, to the hills
>Return to the LZ (current pace)
>Return to the LZ (double time)
>Other

Yooo niggas, I'm falling asleep here

I guess we'll have to end it on this anticlimactic note.

I'd like to apologize for the dice issues we seemed to have, but besides that I want to thank you all for reading, and I hope you enjoyed the thread.

I'll stick around for a bit to answer questions, but you can always ask me questions on my ask.fm

Calling it now, that guy is to Kaine what Ninja Ninja is for Afro Samurai. A consrruct if his own repressed mind, living out and expressing what the real man can't.

Prepare for SAN-checks!
