Hello and welcome to Lost In Time Quest! You are John Erin Perry, commonly called Jeppers (to your chagrin), and you’re the President of the Civil Engineers Association of Roanoke and surrounding districts. Of course, those surrounding districts seem to have taken a holiday, or maybe Roanoke has, and you find yourself, along with the rest of your small town, in another land and time. But now, it seems you’re about to adventure off into this new world for the first time.

!The trip towards Hashan is quiet, just the waves lapping at the sides of your boats, a few complaints from the sea-sick, and Tsin-Chak impatiently tapping her foot on the deck of your boat. Well, not your boat originally. But since it was the biggest and best of them, a full on yacht, and the owner had been on the mainland during the Event, you’ve claimed it for yourself.

“So, Tsin-Chak, what can I expect when I arrive at Hashan?” you say in Dorvish. You’re pretty good at it now, so might as well practice.

Tsin-Chak stops tapping her foot and turns to you, happy to have something to distract her from the monotony. “Oh! Well, once we arrive, there will be ceremonial gift giving between the two leaders of each hearthplace- or *kingdom*, as you say in your language. The more valuable the gifts, the better, but as long as it’s seen as heartfelt, that’s fine. Your gifts are well above and beyond what we would like, so you’re set up perfectly.”

“Alright. After that?”

“Then you will discuss with the Pick, War-axe and Barrel, the three heads of the society, what you wish from them, and what you will give in return. Oftentimes what you offer and what you ask for can merely be symbolic, like access to their city in return for more gifts. At that point, it gets a little easier to socialize and figure out what’s the best practical solution.

"Practical?"

"What the people want. Usually the Barrel, being the master of commerce, will take over, though the Pick and War-axe may join in depending on the talks, such as mineral trades or weapon trades. And-"

"PIRATES!" one of your men roar from the deck, pointing off in the distance, where you make out the shapes of the human ships, clunky and awful but at least twenty-five of them, more than your own twelve.

But your twelve has gatling guns and rifles.

Now, small bit about my schedule this week, since it's a ride. I'll be running this quest today, and will be running it again on Sunday.

The quest-ion is whether I can run MSQ tomorrow. It depends. If I do, the timings will be off. Is that alright?

”So, Tsin-Chak?”

“Yes?”

“I think it’s time that these pesks learn a lesson,” turning to your own crew, you shout out, “prepare the gatling guns! Every man on deck and ready to throw lead! MOVE IT!”

Feet stomp, and soon enough everyone on your boat is up against the walls of the ship, either holding their own rifles towards the oncoming threat, or working to load the gatling guns sitting ready on the ship’s sides. Soon enough other ships start copying you on seeing your response to the threat, though a few of the ones just transporting goods turn around to put the fighting ships in between them and the raiders.

“Sir!” one of the men approach you. “How should we handle this?”

>No survivors. Scorched Earth.

Actually, you're trans-drone. Please don't oppress me and my right to kill indiscriminately.
>>
>>39978671

“Kill them. Kill them all.” the man salutes, and turns back to the group, signaling for them to fire.

And by god do they. As the raider ships get within range, the pop and whip-crack of .22 rifles going off up and down your blockade of boats fills the air, only to be drowned out by the constant churning of the gatling guns. The smell of powder fills the air, and you think quickly about how you may need to secure sources of saltpeter or whatever else you use to make gunpowder.

Soon enough, the sound stops. The enemy ships aren’t that bad looking, with holes here and there, but it’s the gore on board that really shows off the handiwork of your team. They were chewed up and spit out, and with so many people on board (standing room only) they had no choice but to get torn apart by the bullets before death granted them their reprieve.

And now it appears you don’t have any more enemies. For the time being. Once again, the Dorves look impressed, especially Tsin-Chak. “One day you’ll explain the secrets behind those guns of yours. Or I’ll wring it out of Richard.”

“One day, Tsin.”

After the excitement of your fight, time passes quickly enough until the shores are close enough for you to make out people, and Hashan itself.

As opposed to just being a seaside cliff, Hashan is almost like the cliff-face was torn apart and restructured to look like the wall of an entire castle, if any castle was several dozen metres high with battlements and towers leaning out of it. Right at the bottom of the wall there are stone docks extending out into the water, where a few ships are already gathered.

“Alright, so our ship will go in first, to make a good impression. After all, we’re not savages; we kill from 300 yards or more!” the man you direct the instructions to rolls his eyes and heads off to tell the captains of the other ships, now close enough to have set up a few planks between, waiting for the command.

Your ship slowly pulls away, entering the Dorven dock. A few of those on the smaller Dorven ships cower in fear as the yacht you come in on slowly makes it’s way up to the largest space open at the dock, conveniently present right at the front. Soon enough, it docks, and your men are securing it to the ground.

As the bridge comes down for you to walk down, some Dorven guards march out from the great wall. Of course, guard is a strange word, considering that all of them are wearing a mish mash of armor and wielding a smorgasbord of weaponry: one particular dorf has a pan on his head and a ladle in hand, both looking recently used.

As you descend, the guards march forward. “Halt, human scum! I know not what clan you come from, but you’re just like those barbarians around us! If you refuse to leave-”

“Calm down, Makin-tok. He’s a guest of mine, and as civilized as could be. More than us, for sure.” Tsin-Chak descends the bridge, followed by the other dorves, all following her like a procession. “Now, this calls for the Greetings Ceremony. Johnerin here has been practicing his Dorven, and would like a chance to use it.”

The guards stare in shock at Tsin-Chak, before bowing and scraping away. “Of course, Barrel. Right away.”

“Barrel-” it clicks, and you laugh. “Oh, that explains the retinue, then. Well then, Tsin-Chak, Barrel of Hashan, it is a pleasure to make acquaintance with you.”

Tsin-Chak nods. “The pleasure is mine. Now, the War-axe and Pick should both be at least out of bed by now, so we shall go greet them while the time is ripe.

“Time is ripe for what?”

---

After managing to surprise two surly looking dwarves dressed in pajamas predominantly featuring gold and cave-rabbits, you’ve finally settled down in the Grand Hall of Hashan, where a round table has been set up in the centre of the room, where the three Dorves all face you, where you sit on the other side of the table.

“So, let us begin. Tell us, human, what do you bring of worth to Hashan?”

But honestly, I should just switch to D20.

The War-axe frowns. “Hmmph. You’re a human. What could you possibly provide? Maybe Barrel has been won over by your apparent wealth, but you’re soft. No real strength. I cannot give my approval.”

The Pick also frowns. “You sound strong. But we have not seen anything to show your strength.”

Tsin-Chak sighs, and turns to you. “You’ll have to give them a demonstration, Johnerin.”

“In that case, let’s bring out some guns to demonstrate. Treat them to a gatling, maybe.”

---

Soon enough, you have a few riflemen and a gatling team set up on the docks. Further out into the sea is a single human boat, apparently captured and stranded just outside the gates. The humans inside live on whatever scraps people send them, and they’re all currently watching the events on the dock.

“So, what, we’re an execution team for these guys?” one rifleman asks. “Is that even slightly moral?”

“Eh...” you shrug. “I guess, but Tsin-Chak told me a few of these guys made it in and managed to get to the children’s quarters with a weapon before they could catch up. I think we’re allowed this one.”

The rifleman nods vigorously. “Actually, yeah, putting them to death sounds humane. Anyway are those the Shawrax, Tsinrax and Hashta people? Isn’t the last one Tsin-Chak?”

You think for a moment before realizing that you actually hadn’t thought about how the War-axe, Pick (or diamond-axe) and barrel sounded like in English. Weird. “Yeah, Tsin-Chak turned out to be the Barrel/Hashta person. Either way, we’ve got a confirmed ally. We just need to put on a show.

The rifleman, and the rest of the firing team, all salute. “We’ll do our best!”

And so the carnage begins. Sure, it’s only a boat with about twenty people on it, but with a few riflemen methodically destroying each and every last one without pause. The gatling gun stays unused, with the team looking slightly unhappy but very impressed with the riflemen.

You turn to the Shawrax and Tsinrax, both wearing awed expressions on their faces.

You smile, and say in Dorvish, “So, do I deliver?”

“You...you most certainly do.”

>You’ve impressed all of the top Dorves at Hashan! Time to befriend them!

The rest of your ships all come into the docks, and soon enough they’re actually lifted out of the water by an ingenious crane that some Dorven engineers created that looks pretty damn good, despite flagrant abuse of physics, to inside Hashan, in a warehouse to be kept safe. One ship gets sent back to confirm the success of the mission, along with some notes for what to develop next.

Midway through your own preparations through preparing Hashan, you receive news that Roanoke is having a little trouble. Some civilians realized that they were all boned and rebelled. It was calmed without too much fuss, but productivity tanked.

Now, here on Hashan, you have some other duties. Your first mission starts with checking in with the Shawrax, and seeing what he does.

“So, I am the War-axe of this hearthplace, as you know,” the Shawrax says, “I train my men to fight, and then lead them in glorious battle.” He pauses, looking out from the walkway over the centre of a large training hall, where numerous dwarves are all going at it, either with each other, with dummies, or the slightly broken beer pump at the side of the hall, where some dwarves are methodically bashing it to persuade it to release it’s sweet nectar.

You nod. “So what would you like me to do?

“As the War-axe, my job is to ensure my men are battle ready. Compared to your own troops, though, they are utterly and completely inadequate. I would appreciate if you were able to train my men with your firearms. I don’t mind if they aren’t as good as what you have, but please! To survive, two hundred of your men won’t be enough. We have two thousand dorves, ready to fight, not even including the Hearth-mothers and children who can all bash a human’s head in.”

It’s within a single week that you watch a group of some of the Shawrax’s best being gathered up to use the rifles, and within that week you see them get turned into an elite military unit. In fact, you think they did far better than your own people did on their first lessons. With the massive amounts of training and discipline that the dorves went through, they take up the wonders of “aim and fire” with pleasure.

Soon enough, officers are chosen, and promoted to repeaters, who then lead their own squads of dorves onto some raids into nearby human villages, slowly pushing back the threat till Hashan once again spreads out onto the docks and beaches, as opposed to staying inside out of fear.

You watch a few dorven children playing around some of the ships before turning to Tsinrax, who’s watching you with avid interest. “So, Johnerin, you have certainly helped us, even in your first week here. What else do you have planned?”

You shrug. “Honestly, however I can help. What do you need?”

“Well actually, a few things…”

The first thing you had done once everyone had arrived in Hashan was get the CEA you had brought with you set up in their own little domain. They had quickly made friends with the spell-gineers (as the CEA was calling them) and were both coming up with a handsome combination of magical and mechanical machinery. They replaced the original crane with one that didn’t outright disobey the law of physics, thus making it work a little more smoothly. They had gone about improving the roads by plastering them with high-quality paper, so that they’d keep stable for hundreds of years.

When you gave them the task to refine the refineries, they were overjoyed, with at least one of the reasons being the recursion that came with the task.

With the help of the spellcasters, they quickly figure out a good system to melt out slag, channeling that away into handy little vats for any silly would-be sieges, and then using the prime product and combining it with little chunks that the engineers help the dorves identify as chromium and carbon (before, known as notsilverstone and ashstone), and how they can help the process of creating high quality steel.

Before you know it, Hashan’s industry, already huge for dealing with thousands, now has the assistance of modern tech. You have no doubt people will be complaining inside the year of cheap dorven labor.
>>
Oh, guys, I had an idea.
How about, for all the help we're giving them, they teach us what they know about magic? I mean, sounds useful right.
>>
>>39982563
sure. think that was kinda the idea to begin with.
>>
>>39982457

And now you’ve done it. Tsin-Chak, of course, demands nothing of you. After all, you guys are friends now, and you both know you’ll be trading as soon as possible. And so, to repay you for what you’ve done, she offers you some favors, at least before the humans arrive.

What we should really do, is dress up all our science as philospher/alchemical bullshit, make ourselves the only ones who actually know what it is that we do, so that we can turn our island into a giant secluded stronghold-city of beings who appeared from nowhere possessing strange knowledge, it'll help keep others from counteracting us, make our goods in high demand, and make us an intimidating unknown force.
Plus I love the idea of a giant fortress-island where strange creatures with unknown powers dwell, emerging with bizarre weapons that overpower armies far larger than them.

While the forges are cool, the sooner we can master magic the sooner we can blend it with advanced technology to make entirely new fields of magic and research, the sooner we can do this

Magic is an interesting tool, you learn. Every species has its own kind. Now, you can cast the spells of another species, but they can often sputter out and die on you, as the magic is very dependent on the area you’re in and what you are as a person, thus leading you to believe genetics may have something to do with magic.

Besides that, you learn that the Dorves have one of the most powerful styles of magic there is, behind dragons and aetheric beings, but also seem to have the disadvantage of extremely long cast times, depending on entire magical circles and symbols to cast than a few words and snapped fingers.

But hey, you’re an engineer. Nothing was ever done with a few words and snapped fingers.

That’s what you think, as you stare down at the wondrous magical monstrosity that is your first spell. It reminds you of the first time you set out to make a blueprint with all those fancy views of the final product. It sucked. It sucked so much.

But god did you love it. It’s still in your room at Roanoke, you think.

This seems much the same, though the dorves watching you seem a bit more careful with it than your engineering teachers did.

“Uh, Johnerin?”

“Yeeees?”

“What exactly is that?”

You allow the ship to come in, though you get the Dorven fireteams ready to fire on the ship necessary. The only humans present are yourself, Michael, and Harriet, all wearing masks quickly put together by the Dorves, along with some other bulky looking armor. Tsin-Chak confirms that you definitely don’t look human, more like golems (which you note as a source of free labor to build for later).

Soon enough, the ship has docked, and one human stumbles out, looking slightly more refined but not by much, in the way that a fur coat looks better than just wearing the still bloody skin of an animal.

Without much fanfare, he comes forward to face Tsin-Chak and the other two leaders of Hashan, glaring at them in disgust. He jumps a little upon seeing you and the others, and stays wary. He begins speaking, in whatever they called English here.

“This is human land. You dorves need to get out.”

Tsin-Chak, being the translator, relays the information, and gives back a shaken head. “No can do. This is both the land of Dorves and of Roanoke. You have no right to be here.”

The human cocks his head. ‘Ro-ah-noke? What is this?” he stares at you. “Are you those from this Roanoke?”

Making sure that the helmet grinds against your body, you slowly lean in towards the human, and nod, each part of you screeching as you do so. “We are Roanoke. We *will* destroy you.”

The human slowly takes a step back. “W-well, t-this is human…this is human territory! You can’t come in here and take our land!”

You laugh, the sound ringing out in all the wrong places inside the helmet and suit, sending the sound everywhere, an omnipresent grinding. “Really? And what are you going to do about it?”

“We’ll kill you!” now the human is getting angrier, likely at himself. “We’ll fight you! We are the twelve clans of the cliff-coast, and we will make you suffer!”

Tsin-Chak shakes her head, and says in English, “Leave, human. You will not win today, or the day after. You are free to come and die at any point. Know that we, and Roanoke, will wait for you.”

---

After that bit of fun, it seems that the humans begin to gather, and are preparing to attack. You have one more action before the battle begins.

Hopefully we can set it up so the dwarves don't tell anybody about the island, I mean the only ones who know are the ones who went with us.
>>
>>39991223
The thing I worry about this "creepy" factor is it will just lead to distrust or fear when we meet new groups of people/races. Fear of the unknown can lead to rash decisions after all

Mind, I don't mind secrecy in and of itself. I'd never easily or freely give away our best cards. Not even to the dwarfs.

With a little bit more work, Hashan becomes even more of a fortress. After getting over the shock and surprise of seeing such clean paper, the dorves quickly jump to it and start applying it to absolutely everything, reinforcing the walls and weapons as much as possible, until you can see the magic running down the barrels of the guns in the dorven and human hands.

After you had managed to make the mask work for you, the Roanoke humans (who’ve caught onto the joke and are now all calling each other Roanoke) are wearing masks, either made of forged metal and lightened with magic (fucking magic) or from more exotic materials, like wood, old knives, or even permanently-frozen snow. It’s creepy, seeing it, but in a way it helps. You weren’t always great with names, anyway, so the masks help you remember who everyone is.

And now, you see the first wave of humans approaching, from land. There aren’t exactly any entrances to get in from up there, but...

>Let the dorven berserkers go fight them
>Let the dorven fireteams fight them
>Let Roanoke fight them

no, just the diplomats and ambassadors, after all those are mostly going to be the ones that people see, if rumors start spreading that we're human, we start spreading other more ridiculous rumors, so that they get buried in the shuffle.
I mean honestly these people lived in suburbia, they're not very likely to want to go roaming out beyond there homes.

After checking outside, you find a smaller force coming towards Hashan, more like a raiding force than anything. Obviously they had attempted to pick off the last dorven outposts, but with all of the citizens of Hashan returning inland to the hearthplace, there was nothing for them. And so they’re angry, and ready to kill some dorves.

At this, the Shawrax sends up some of the dorven berserkers, all five hundred of them, loaded up with their own shawraxes and beer, ready to take on the invaders.

The battlefield is ready. On one end, a party of some hundred human raiders, each one dressed up in their armor, iron swords at the ready, wooden bucklers all aiming towards their opponent.

Their opponent is 500 very rowdy dorves, each and every single one drunk out of their minds, more than a few menacing with spikes, a group holding sheets of paper at the ready to enhance their comrades. And all of them were thirsty for human blood.

If it weren’t for the fact that you were their allies, you are sure they’d tear you apart just as easily as they are going to tear apart these humans. You don’t even think that guns could stop them that easily, at least not before some of your own men go down.

And so, the battle begins, and you watch the war take its first step. The dorves all rush out, with the Shawrax at the head of the charge, screaming out the dorven equivalent of “BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GODS!” The rest follow, and cheer the same, into the human mass.

The sound of weapons clashing reaches you from here, but you can tell from the screams of humans and victory cries of the dorves that your side is winning.

Within half an hour, the humans are either all dead, or running away. You feel a small twinge of guilt at the massive amounts of murder, but they had initiated it in the beginning. And they haven’t even faced your own weapons, yet…

>Victory to the Dorves!

You return back inside Hashan, where more progress is being made on a war room, inspired by the map you have set up back at Roanoke. Several of the dorves and your humans (you need to figure a palatable way of saying Roanokian or something) gathered around it, discussing battle plans. They look to you for guidance.

>Reach out to Roanoke for assistance, and check in on progress (Gives you turns in Roanoke)

You choose to send back a few ships to Roanoke, so you can check the progress of everything and insure that it’s all going the way you want it to.

So just before the ships leave, you prepare a letter.

Dear Mary,

Just wanted to check in with Roanoke. Everything is going splendidly here in Hashan, with the humans now attempting to invade and us winning each time they’ve tried so far (once, to be fair, but it was enough of a win that we believe we have this covered).

Nonetheless, I wanted to make sure that Roanoke is:
>Focusing on Communications
>Focusing on Agriculture
>Focusing on Culture
>Focusing on Industry

, because I believe that will be our primary goal in the coming weeks. I’d also like to
>throw a party for those in Roanoke, for their efforts
>get some items shipped back, if you would (Write In what you want)
>send some dorves over for a bigger workforce.

Along with that, I’d like to see if the CEA still at Roanoke could please:
>Build more lathes
>Build more guns
>Research new technology
>Research some magic

Cheers,

John Erin Perry

A week later, and about two more utter destructions of human raids (leading you to believe that whoever is in charge was just expecting the dorves to fall over at the first blow), the boats return from Roanoke, with news.

“Dear Jeppers,

Things are going reasonably well here. It’s been some struggle after the last riots here, but we’ve managed to mostly get back on track with things. We’ve cut down trees in the reserve and have turned it into some farmland for cultivating, and we’ve actually began to grow some potatoes and carrots that we’ve had lying around. That guy who had his own plot of land, Mitch, has taken over the farming operations, and it’s coming together reasonably well. The party itself went great, and has pulled the few of us still depressed that they’ll never see the other world again from the brink. Still, there were some suicides, unfortunately.

On the CEA side of things, they’ve managed to get some lathes set up. Not too many, only three right now, but they say that these ones are built for making more a bit faster, so that should be fine. We’ve actually sent you over

>one of the lathes
>the first Howitzer
>a converted diesel engine that can run on biofuel and alcohol

You laugh at the last line as you set down the letter, watching as the crew of Roanoke humans (goddamnit you need a name) slowly lift down the entire Howitzer. You notice one is actually still wearing a mask, a wooden affair covering his entire face, a wooden affair with markings and a net where the eyes are, almost appearing to have none at all. Weird, but definitely interesting.

Finally, the howitzer gets set down, and you go to inspect it. From your limited knowledge of it, it seems to look good, and the little note attached to it runs through how to operate it safely. With it comes fifty rounds, along with a guide on how to make more in the forges of Hashan.

With the help of the Shawrax, you manage to get a team of 8 individuals, some dorf and some human, to operate the Howitzer. Each armed with a short rifle, almost a derringer, and the tools to load and prep the howitzer, they all work together pretty well, ignoring the fact that only one dorf knows how to speak English, and no humans know how to speak dorf. But, all of them know how to drink, so you’re perfectly fine.

And it appears that another wave of humans is coming. Several hundred ships from the sea are closing in, and a few large parties are coming in on land. Seems like they finally believe you’re worth the effort.

You should have tried Hungarian Rap. I got exposed to it yesterday. Interesting experience to say nothing about it.

Once you send all of the troops to their places, you prepare to take on the oncoming threat. You yourself make way to a viewport at the top of the wall that gives you a clear view over the docks, along with a staircase that leads to the top of the surface wall. And now, you wait for the enemies to approach.

Or wait, why would you? You’ve got a fucking howitzer. As the human boats start to approach, you signal for the Howitzer to begin raining hell down upon the newcomers. And they happily oblige. And you watch as the rounds quickly get sent flying the two kilometres out from the docks and straight through the lead ship, sinking it pretty damn quickly.

The other ships press on, confused as to what the hell could’ve destroyed their ships from so far out. And what could continue to do so, four times a minute. You know that the forges are working on making more rounds, but you’ll likely run out just as the ships come in range of the gatling guns, which are all waiting and ready.

A runner comes down to alert you that the berserkers have just come into contact with the humans on the surface. It seems the humans are better armed this time, and ready for dorven tactics, and are slowly pushing their way through.

>Docks: Ten enemy ships killed, no loss of life.

>Full compliment alive
>Ninety ships left.

>Surface: One hundred seventy five humans down, 100 berserkers down.

>300 Surface Berserkers left.
>1825 surface humans left

For /k/anon, the howitzer has a max fire rate of 4 RPM, similar to the M198. Magic really fucking helps it at this. You could sustain at maybe 2-3.

is there a second part or are you waiting for tactics write-ins?

Second part.

The ships at the docks continue to approach, and in the ten minutes it takes for them to get close enough that you could see their faces if you were down on the docks, another fourty of those ships die, the last round sending a ship up in flames, declaring the last of their ammunition. They begin shuffling it back inside, to wait for more ammunition. With that, the gatling guns begin to spin up.

Up on the surface, your recieve word that the dorves have managed to kill another three hundred humans, but at the cost of 200 dorven berserker lives. They’re a kilometre away from the wall, now, where the seventy five dorven fireteams wait for them, along with the gatling guns.

>Docks: Fourty enemy ships killed, no loss of life.

>Everyone’s alive.
>Fifty ships left.

>Surface: Three hundred more humans dead, two hundred berserkers down.

>150 Berserkers left
>1525 humans left.

>Roll 1d100

>Any strategy you wish?

Rolled 50 (1d100)

>Pull the berserkers back into a shield wall and unleash a hail of bullets with the Gatling. If things look like they're going to go bad, have the army reinforce them from behind.

I suggest a new thread, as our strategy.
