There's sparks flying up and down your spine-
Not like that, the metaphorical kind!

You're torn.
On one hand- You're kind of maybe mid conversation with your friend. Mid-massage, too. And, to be honest, the caravan won't actually be going anywhere the moment it arrives. And it's likely not arrived yet, anyway. Probably has just been spotted on the road, heading into town.

And of course, these are all just excuses, and you kind of might be whispering them to yourself to stay in place, near vibrating with excitement.

This- this is it, isn't it?
You'll be leaving. Actually leaving.

The forest, the village, your family- Stepping beyond what you know, stepping into a world wider than you've seen-

There's the feeling of- of electricity, for lack of words. The crawling sensation of your skin across your neck, your scalp, your hair feeling like it's on end, your heart pounding a hundred hundred times a second, your hands pressed flat against your elven friend, keeping yourself from clenching your fingers and accidentally hurting someone.

What do you do? What do you do now? This is- Gods, you're too excited to think straight-

>Run out into the street, watch the caravan come in.
>Panic. Start babbling at Lann, or Nin, or someone. What are you even going to do when you leave?
>Remain calm. Continue conversation. And all that.
>Other (?)

Unrelated to the current topic. Do we have any of our chitin left over from the moult?

I had an idea for sharpening a few pieces into daggers for our friends. Our web is strong as hell, but out chitin claws can snip it no problem. And the sticky threads will cling to damn near anything except our chitin.

We should give our friends the ability to get our of our webs should they ever need to. Considering the wacky adventures we're likely to get into, it's something they'll need at some point.

You seize up all at once, a brilliant shining moment of hyperventilation expressed in a matter of seconds.
While you no doubt appeared spastic- not that you care right now- For you, it was all slow motion.

The dull thudding of your heart echoing through your chest, your head.
Your lips parting slowly as the demands of your breathing break free of what you can manage with your nose alone, your chest heaving.
The heat- the raw unfiltered heat of it- spreading through you, sweat beading across your skin, an uncontrollable shiver twisting up your spine.

And then you snatch the reins from the maw of your own panicking brain, bundling it all back down into a semblance of control, your arms dropping from Lann's shoulders to her sides, curling around her and clutching her to yourself, an overgrown elven teddy bear.

You're dimly aware of all sorts of things, your body on near autopilot, responding to questions and conversation with simple, distracted answers while you deal with the pressing needs of clinging to sanity.

There's the scent of Lann's hair, her voice with just a hint of a smirk to it- Nin's hand, running across your arm, from the soft flesh of your shoulder, through the line of fuzz coiled around the break of chitin and skin.

Both of them are talking to you.

"...the world is a big place, huh?" Lann's voice, vaguely distant, asks.
"Yes?"

Nin chimes in as well, her voice as soft as her antennae, which are very, very soft.
"It's fine. Nothing to be worried about. Or nervous about."
" 'm fine. Yes."
"That's good."
"Yes."

Nin wanders too close, and you snatch her as well, one arm striking out and dragging her next to Lann, keeping both of them near you.

You clear your throat, fingers drumming lightly over your friends. Topic- topic, conversation- What were you? Oh. Yes.
>>
>>39993221

"Have you thought about what I said?"
"Huh?" "Lyra?"
"The, ah- Finding your family, yes. Lann."
"I need some time to think about it. And you asked less than five minutes ago."
"Ah."

The two of them exchange glances, the elf craning her neck to to meet your eyes.
"Having some second thoughts, miss spider?"
"Wha- No. No. I am just- uh. Thinking about what I will be doing. Yes."
"And what will you be doing?"
"Leaving. Hm. Lann?"
"Yes?"

"Lann."
"You already said that."
"Distract me, yes."
"Distract you?"
"I already said that."

She rolls her eyes.
"You're going to have to put me down, then."
You purse your lips, tilting your head and making a show of thinking about it.
"Alright. But I will be keeping Nin, yes."
"Suit yourself."

You release the half-elf, and she stretches as she stands, pulling her hands together high over her head.
"Nghh- That was pretty nice, though. You're halfway decent at massages."
"Halfway? I am not sure that is a compliment."
"Use more pressure, then."
"My hands are halfway to being swords, yes? And people are fragile."

She shrugs, leading your towards the stairs leading below, peering down.
"Get some gloves or something. Sheszka!" She shouts the last bit, her voice echoing slightly in the stone stairwell you created.

The response, though, is immediate, the wolf appearing out of thing air, a blur of messy white hair hiding a wide, eager smile.
"Yes?"
Lann answers before you can say anything, ask anything.
"Saddle up, we've got a spider to distract."

She follows the instructions, though she's undoubtedly just as confused as you are.
The rest of the pack is slower uup the stairs, but they follow along all the same, the elf leading all of you to the street, and into the village.

Straight towards-

Straight towards your sister's house, apparently.

"Lann?"
"Yes?"
"What are we doing?"
"Distracting you."
"Distracting me with what?"
>>
>>39993848
She shrugs again, making a face.
"I think we can start with packing. Last minute just makes a mess. Shopping after that. Then your family, then the caravan and-"
"What."
"What?"
"That isn't a distraction at all."
"Sure it is."

You snort, Nin starting to cackle in your grasp.
Lann keeps going, like there isn't a crazy moth punctuating the conversation with laughter.
"Getting up and going is way better than wallowing in a panic, right?"
"I was not wallowing, yes."
"Sure, sure."

You follow her into your sister's home, the half-elf knocking politely on the door before she pulls it open.
"Wallowing is something pigs do, yes. I am a spider-"

You're both interrupted by your father poking his head out of the kitchen, a sheaf of paper in his hands.
"I'm almost done the letter!"
Everyone stares, and Lann breaks the silence with the thought running through everyone's mind.

"No, that's a book."

A compass. Seasonings. A sizable waterproof tarp if one's available (I can't remember if we can make our silk waterproof or not). Waterskins of applicable size for everyone in the party. Dry rations (not that they'd last long).

As for niceties, maybe some reading material, and few sewing needles in case we want to practice with them while on the road.

Your father moves one hand to his chin, scraping awkwardly at the stubble spreading across his face.
"I had- There were a few things to say."
Lann looks like she's going to say something, but you get there first-
"Did you write down everything that happened to you since you left home."

"Well, of course."
"Why don't you just visit, then?"
"But I've seen all the dungeons and ruins on the island already."

There is a certain logic to your father.
One that stands valiantly in the face of reality, self-assured and completely at ease with a blatant sort of denial of life.

You nod.
"I need to pack, yes. And then shop. Or hug people, I haven't decided yet."
"I think Elle was making you a tent."
"You aren't sure?"
"It could be a blanket for the house, I suppose."

"That is not a thing, yes."
"Then it's probably a tent. I'll get the letter wrapped so it stays dry."
"Okay."

You skitter your way towards your stuff pile.
It is a pile of your stuff.

It's kind of lacking, to be honest.
Your original spear. Glaive. Bits of things you kept. Maybe more bear fangs than you actually need. More clothing than most of the village, most likely.
Not that that will last. Elle means business.

And is starting a business, so it'll probably last a little while longer.
Your magic stone. Jin's feather. A few sharpening stones, that weird cloth that you need to polish your armour with. Blankets for your friends.

The parcel- which is really what it is, a vaguely square-like pile of things wrapped in silk- isn't too big.
A small bundle of memories.
>>
>>39994918
You head back to everyone, Lann and your father chatting in elvish, the door still wide open.
Although you suppose Elle doesn't have to worry too much about insects, what with being a giant spider.

"That's it? I thought you'd have more to pack."
"I will wear my armour instead of packing it, yes. And I am not old enough to have a lot of things."
The half elf shrugs contritely.
"Fair enough."

Important question; did Elfdad ever finish those storage amulets the work like miniture bags of holding?

Because packing will be a hell of a lot easier with them.

Or did he completely forget when he got distracted with the letter/autobiography?
>>

You advance on your father like the oversized predator you are, which is to say you walk straight at him and he doesn't react whatsoever outside of smiling at you.
Because he's family, and doesn't get particularly frightened by arachne. Which is fairly important, all told.

You sweep him into a hug that makes him laugh and return it, muttering to him as you move.
"Mh. I love you all, yes? I will miss you."
"And I love each and every one of you, as well." He says, patting your head. "But the caravan doesn't leave for a day or so, so hold off on that with your mother."

"Maybe."

You let him down, and he turns over a thickly wrapped brick of paper.
"And I might have written too much. But I think it's important all the same."
"Okay. Tell me how many pages in they have to get before it says I am your daughter, yes?"

He pauses, looking thoughtful, then snaps his fingers.
"Page two!"
"Really?"
"The greeting is sort of long."
"If you say so."

You wave him off as you head outside, friends trailing behind- Lann seems to be trying to chat with a wolf, though she's getting mostly one word answers.
You remind yourself to have someone teach her more forest language. Maybe Lia? Or you could heap more things on Elle. Or she could ask anyone who married a harpy, really.

"Lann?"
"Yeah?"
"Why don't you know more forest speech, yes?"
"'Cause everyone in the village speaks plainspeech."

Don't worry so much. I promised it would happen today.
>>
>>39996235

The time management of this quest is interesting. In a way, it feels pretty holistic and homey in the way it goes through every part of the day in fairly exacting detail. On another, it can be difficult for the action loving crowds to get their fill when breakfast gets as much attention as a big fight. I don't really have any objections one way or the other, but it is interesting.
>>
>>39996164
It would be quite silly for a group of people who sell things to show up for a day, thats barely enough time to work out your prices.
>>
>>39996368

Oakring is likely too small of a village to buy up sufficient commodities to interest the caravan. A day spent there is a day they won't be in the elven lands making bank.

If we bring monster trophies, or fashion them into jewelry or whatever, only get the really impressive fangs and whatnot. We want to advertise our accomplishments to our cousins/aunts/uncles/ect. Even better, be wearing our finest armor, spear, and STERN.

I just want to see their reaction when a giant spider made of fire and stone wearing the teeth of beasts bigger than their house shows up on the doorstep asking after her grandmother.

And then Nin opens her mouth.
>>
>>39996434

You have a point. The only thing I can think of to explain it in story (though we know the meta reason why they are only in for a day), is that they've sent ahead to figure out the exchange of commodities. Spider silk is such a hot item that they'd likely claim their stake a month in advance to make sure incidental merchants didn't cut into their bottom line.
>>
>>39996506
Travel time? they need to offload, get paid, and preferably leave in the morning as opposed to the afternoon.

You stop all at once in the street, struck by the nagging and ever present feeling that you've forgotten something.
Also, the prevalent realization that your smallest sister is undoubtedly somewhere in the house reading, but it's the forgetfulness that bothers you most as you turn and march back for the house.

Something to do with your father? The house itself? What was it?
You're not going crazy or anything, are you? You don't want to dismiss that this might just be your brain playing tricks on your or something.
No, no- There was definitely something that needed doing.

You throw the door open as you reach marching through and muttering to yourself all the while.

"Nia? Is that- Lyra? Did you forget something?"
"Yes! What did I forget?"
"I don't know. What did you forget?"
"I can't remember, yes? That is how it works. This is going to drive me crazy. Don't say it. Either of you."

Nin and Lann work in sync-
"You're already- Aw."

"Brats."
"I'm older than you, y'know."
"Then you should know better, yes."
"Whatever you say there, miss 'I stick the word elf on everything."
"You always know what I am talking about, though."

You father shakes his head.
"You've all completely lost me."

Was it something to do with him? He was doing something, wasn't he? What was it?
"What were you doing?"
"I already finished the letter?"
"Before that, yes? Oh, and is Sara here?"
"Upstairs I think? Reading on the roof. Or in your sister's room. I had breakfast before I worked on the letter. It took a while."

"No, no. Magic? Magic something? Was that it?"
You chew your finger, thankful that they're armoured, running through your memories. Aha!

"Magic!"
"You can do it too, Lyra."
"Not without you or Sara or the stone- Wait, no. You were working on a way to talk to people, yes? Across the world?"
He shakes his head.
>>
>>39996755

"That was more of a... long term project. For the magic it would take, at the moment- It's best to pay a summoner, or write a letter. And you should still write a letter if you use a summoner anyway, summons forget things."
"I see. There was something else, too- Jin's necklace, yes. Did you get that enchantment working?"
"Oh- Oh! Yes! I did get it right once."
"Once?"

"Well, two bags disappeared, and one is now enchanted to stay inside out."
"That seems not very useful, yes."
"Worse than you think. It throws anything you try and put into it out as well. I think I could use it for security, to keep people out of places- I just have to make it not turn the whole building inside out first."
"I see."
"Your mother wouldn't let me practice in the nest."

Thank every god for your mother.

"I'm going to go see Sara, yes?"
"I'll find that bag. Probably. It should be here, just... buried."
You nod as he starts to head towards what appears to be a junkyard in training, and head for the stairs.

The forgetful feeling isn't going away.

If it wasn't dadmagic, what was it? Agh.

Sara is in Elle's room, it turns out. Buried in a cocoon of silk and blankets, books askew- and snoring loudly.
Arachne are large, but Sara is... kind of small?
Loud as can be, though.
>>
>>39996506
They might just be making a stop along a longer trade route. Even if Oakring can only offer beds for the night and hot food that's more than they would get on the road. Also, they could get news from the Guild about events/dangers in the area. Who knows, something interesting might have been found in/come out of the forest.

As it stands, they're about to be first in line for local spider silk goods. Even if they don't draw up a contract with our merchant friend for exclusive access they'll still be able to buy up a big order of some serious money making goods and offload them for some nice profits before word gets out.
>>
>>39996773
You give her shoulder a gentle shake while your friends try to conceal their laughter at her chainsaw mimicking abilities.

"Nnnn- mm. Muh. Lyra? Wha's it? Isss night. Go bed, yes."
You give her a quick kiss on her forehead.

"It is the middle of the day, yes? And the caravan is here."
"Nooooo. No leavinnnn." She mutters, yawning wide.

You giggle a bit yourself, dragging her out of her blanket laden hideout and into a hug.
"I still have tonight, yes. Try and stay awake, or you'll turn into a harpy at this rate."
"M'kay. Yes. Goodnight, I love you."
"I love you too, yes."

>>
>>39996783
Spiders usually don't come to town, our family so far is an exception, for the most parts spiders stay in the woods, and people stay in the small village. They don't usually produce exotic goods unless some monsterfolk need something from other lands for some reason. As such the spider silk thing only just started up. Which has increased the caravan and settling here already, hence the extra adventurers.

Also good is that the wolves attacked, which would give the harpies an excuse to retaliate and take more territory for the village if need be. Granted if we kept up the shit with the ruins people could settle there also.

Well, they also just got access to water stones via our little mine. You make it to the street, and halfway to the shop before you stop again, your hands raising overhead, as though they had a mind of their own.

"YES!"

You even wake Jin, who joins everyone is staring at you like you were crazy, but you're not crazy you just got distracted and that is something that happens to everyone but it is okay now because you remember what you were supposed to be doing and now you're going to do and stop making that face Lann, you double elf-

You change directions. Again. But this time is more of a course adjustment than returning to harbour.
Nautical metaphors aside, you're headed to the guild.

Straight through the doors, down the hall, knock twice-
Edmund's voice is only starting to say something when you pull it open.
You're pretty sure it was 'come in', anyway.

"Hello, yes!"
He looks from his papers to you, confused.
"Lyra. Uh, Hello again. I'm not done with-"
"No, that is fine, I remembered what I needed to do."
"Okay."

You nod and smile and he nods and smiles, and everyone waits.
And then Nin intervenes.
"Lyra?"
"Yes?"
"You haven't told anyone what it is you remembered."
"Oh."

There's a chorus of giggling traitors behind you, but that won't stop you.
"I need to build a house for the wolves, yes? Where can I put it, please."
The officer blinks, taken aback a second, leaning his chair backwards-

Where it connects with the wall, leaving him comfortably reclined. Or uncomfortably. The room is a closet.

"Well, next to your sister's house would work. That fine?"
"Yes!"
You're halfway down the hall when you remember your manners, clattering back to the doorway, and wrenching it open again.

"Sorry! Thank you, yes!"

That settles that, then.
>>
>>39998060

It takes you longer than you'd like to get back outside, what with the reversing you have to do to get around the offices of the guild. Hopefully the city has a bigger office?

No, you're being silly. It would have to serve way more adventurers, it will definitely be way bigger.
Hopefully you can fit through the doors because it probably wasn't designed with crazy monster shapes in mind.

For now though, you are building a house for sometimes crazy monster shaped people, though they cheat and turn into regular sized people when they feel like it.
Oh well.

Your turn to the wolves, shooing your other traikign companions out of your way.

"I have to make your home now, yes."
"Yes?"
Asarra is speaking for the pack again, then.
"What sort of things do you need?"
"A cave? Or a big tree?"

You blink.

"No- I mean- I can make things, yes. So it will be something like other people have. Do you want rooms for yourselves? A big room to share?"
They turn to each other whispering, hands waving in small circles as they come to whatever conclusion they can.
And then they all start talking at once.

"A big circle." "A bigger circle." "A whole bunch of circles!" "A circle with a thing on top. To keep out the rain." "Yes." "Yes isn't a-"

You interrupt them- and they all quiet immediately, attentive.
"Okay. A big, circular room, with extra ones off from it. Do you want a basement?"
They exchange confused looks.
You revise your statement.

"A room underground. It will be cooler in the summer."
"Yes." "Yes." "Yes." "Definitely that." "Please, Alpha."

The construction is-

Well, it's construction. It's a lot of work. You're left kind of tired in the aftermath. Nothing drop dead asleep on the ground or anything, just...
Yawning, stretching, tired. That sort of stuff.

The wolf hut- which is really what it is, in the end- isn't anything spectacular.
On the outside, at least.

A simple looking round building, extra rooms at the back, each a definitive lump sticking out of the structure. A doorway, a few window ports, a nameplate over the door.
It took a lot to not put 'Dog' on it.

Though when you think about it, that's probably a massive insult.
Well, you didn't, so it's fine, isn't it?

The inside is nicer- A detailed fireplace in the centre of the room, open on four sides, the chimney exiting straight through the ceiling. Tribal- flavoured carvings of wolves and spiders line the edges of the wall.
It's a home. A start, for them.

You leave them brawling in the building to decide who gets first pick of the identical rooms, promising them things like doors and blankets upon your return.

And then your make for ground zero: The trading post.
Host to a monster so dangerous, the adventurers quiver in fear- and your sister works there, too.

You pull up with your reduced posse, a small pile of men pulling things from the wagons, another set putting things back on- and there's at least two teams working, the people pointedly ignoring each other is some sort of crazy rivalry.
Or they're just really busy with work, but you like your own interpretation better.

You step inside.

The first thing that hits you- more than the sudden crowding of the building, more than the press of bodies inside- is the noise.
Prices, goods, all sorts of yelling- This can't be normal, can it?
>>
>>39999203

Theresa's voice rings out clear over all the others, the trader perched atop her own countertop.
"SOLD! The trader in the furs, come up please- My assistant will mark everything down. Next up is a few spools of arachne thread- Yes, you heard that right-"

Is she- This is an auction. She's running an auction. This cannot be normal.
You go to step forward, skittering wherever you have to to avoid the bodies all around- which, inside a contained building such as this, is entirely pointless. You wind up bumping into several different people- traders or whatever it is you call people who lead caravans.
All of them ignore you, utterly focused on getting their hands on silk and thread- Gods, you bet she hasn't even brought out any finished pieces. And that smile- How many of these poor people are going to go home without a single piece of copper in their pockets?

She looks like a demon. A bit of lighting, a few horns. Yes, you could totally see her bartering for souls.

And then one of the people You bumped into glances over his shoulder, his eyebrows rising along with a rather perverted smile as he stares at your chest. And then he looks straight at your face, catches your six eyes and freezes. His pupils flick to the side, to your monster coated rear end. And the fact that it is a spider.
And then he shouts.

"AH!"

How do you respond to that? He knows what he's trying to buy, doesn't he? He isn't afraid or anything, right?
"Uh. Hello?"
"ARACHNE!"
"Yes. Hello. I have a name."

His voice catches the attention of the people all around him, and the human wave starts- people start turning to see why people are turning, and it only takes a few seconds for every person in the room to be staring straight at you.
>>
>>39999222
Theresa catches your eyes from her perch- and her smile grows wider.
Oh gods.

Her voice booms again- one poor man at the front signing away only gods know what to her-
"And of course, we have a special sort of thing for you all tonight! An arachne adventurer- yes, you heard that right! She's leaving town, guild approved, and willing to work with a caravan!"

The room explodes into chaos.
Gods.

REQM intended for the quest to be dark.

He just didn't have it in him, nor we, to make it so.

Now we got a cutesy adventure that wouldn't be out of place in the Slayers format of animoo.

You take a deep breath as people start attempting to bid on you- some yelling numbers over their fellows at you, others jumping straight up, one arm skyward as they yell at Theresa.
Who apparently thinks all this is funny?
You'll show her funny. Oh yes.

"HELLO."

Booming barely encompasses the sheer sound of you yelling in an enclosed space, drowning out every sound in the room, the shouts and yellign falling quiet in your wake.
All that's left is Theresa's snickiering and your sister's giggling.

"MY NAME IS LYRA."

You nod. They nod.

"Nice to meet you, yes?"

And then they start yelling numbers again, and you are going to snap someone in half to get people's attention, you swear to gods-
"My caravan is wondrous beyond imagination-"
"Your caravan is a garishly painted wagon you ass-"
"Twenty gold a night!"
"Twenty-five!"
"I don't think I can even- Wait, what if I fired all the other guards?"

What is this, even? How many caravans are here? Or are these all individual merchants? Are they aware that you are not going to sit and produce silk for them? How many people will survive this-
Something in on your shoulders- Nin is on your shoulders- oh gods no not now-

"Ahem- Good evening, Ladies and Gentlemen!"
"Is that a moth?"
"What is even going on-"

Nin coughs again, louder, flicking her wings wide, the gold shimmering in lamplight.
"While you are undoubtedly distracted by Lyra's unbelievable presence- There's more!"

You can't even hide, can you.
"Altogether- We number a harpy, a werewolf, a Lamia, a moth and an Arachne!"
"I don't see any-"
"The lamia is very small. Shush."
"Okay."
>>
>>40000632
"We are adventurers, one and all, though none so strong as our-"
You haul her off your shoulders before she can start shouting about queens, dragging the giggling moth down and clearing your own throat.

"Hello. Yes. As she said- We are adventurers. We mean to follow a caravan to the trade city- and after that, we will head for the elflands."
"The what?"
"The elven isle. Peninsula."
"Oh."

They start arguing amongst themselves again, though quieter this time. Nin is wearing the same damned grin the shopkeep has on- Like a cat that is entirely too satisfied with it's current position.
"You didn't even let me properly announce your divine right to rule."
"Then it is goo that I do not have one, yes?"

She scoffs.
"I'll make one for you, then."
"That is- That is not how that works. At all."
"All I have to do is become a god, don't I? Or would a demi-god be enough for you?"
"You are being ridiculous, yes? You don't need to be anything."

She grins again.
"Well then- I declare Lyra's divine right to rule! Long live the Queen!"
You sigh.

"None of this in the cities. Please."
"I promise."

I used that and some inflated % of body weight per day stuff based on a pure carnivore. Which is still a terrible way to do it
>>
You scuttle your way through the crowd towards the counter.
Merchants part like water before the prow of a ship, though far more urgently.

Water isn't at risk of being run over by a giant spider, after all.

Your friends have piled onto your back- Nin standing behind you, Sheszka and Jin both awake and alert on your shell. Lann stuck to the doorway, unwilling to dive into the sea of caravaneers. Or whatever they're called.

The shopkeep gives you a wide grin as you reach her little controlled zone, your sister at her side- paper and a quill in hand.
"Lyra."
"Theresa, Elle."
"Mhm. Nice timing, by the way. Right in the middle of riling them up for the good stuff."
"I want to be out of the building before you try to sell anything Elle has made, yes."

Both of them laugh. Theresa with the secured knowledge that the shop will be that much richer in a very short period of time- And Elle simply incredibly pleased to find just how much people like her stuff.

You need out of this madhouse.

"Did you really need to try and auction me off?"
"What? Oh. Nah, that was just for fun."
"What."
"There's two caravans, right? Each has a captain. They're the ones who'll hire you."
"What."
"Yeah, these are all just merchants, haha-"

You grumble into your hands as people laugh at your minimal and largely embarrassment based hardship.

"I am not pleased, yes."
"Good thing you're leaving in the morning then."
"The morning? I thought they took longer to-"
"Not with spools of silk. They all but race back to the city."
"Huh."

"Well, in any case- Head around the back, and the two people there will be the ones to talk to."
"You are more of a monster than anything in the forest."
"How rude. I am a business woman, thank you very much."
"Isn't that what I said?"
>>
>>40002179
She rolls her eyes and shoos you away.
Instead, you lean over the counter-
"I need supplies, too."
"Huh? What would you even need?"
"Maps? A compass? More stones to sharpen things, yes. Needles and thread, bandages and all that. Little things."
"Alright. I'll send them with your sister, then- Now get out of here, I can't sell silk with you walkin around distracting them all."
"Yes, yes."

You skitter out into the street as another wave of bidding erupts, much to Theresa's cackling.

It's a simple trip round the back where an older woman and man order around seperate pools of workers, shifting piles of goods and gods know what else around.

You opt for the direct approach.

"Hello!"

Both turn to face you- even the workers pause for a moment to stare at the chimeric form of a monster carrying a large pile of other monsters- at least until their bosses yell at them to get back to loading.

They spare a glance for each other before they both walk up to you, the man a step ahead of the woman, offering his hand.
"You'll be Miss Lyra, then?"

You his hand- then the woman's in turn.
"That is me, yes."
He grunts an affirmation.
"I'm Kenzington- this is-"
"This is Raea, thank you."
"Introductions aren't rude, y'know."
"Do you plan on hiring her?"
"If'n I can."
"Then it's a competition."

He shrugs, turning back to you.
"There y'have it, then. We're both looking to hire you. Even a skip down to the city'd be safer with a spider in tow. Uh- It ain't rude to call you a spider, is it?"
"No? I do not think it is, anyway."
"That's good then."

The woman cuts in easily enough.
"So- Standard rates for adventurers, free passage for extras. Hunters supply food. Your friends can ride, but we haven't a cart in your size. At least not one with enough space for you and cargo. My apologies."
"That is fine, yes? I am aware of how big I am. I am not opposed to pulling a wagon or cart, or whatever."
>>
>>40002204

The man again-
"That strong, huh. How much do you eat?"
"A lot? Something like a deer will keep me for a day and a bit, yes. Less if I need to make a web."
"Damn. But being 'round the caravan means no attacks, or something?"
"Sort of. Most animals avoid me unless I am sneaking."

"Not bad. Who are the extras? I heard the wolf and harpy are adventurers?"
"Nin- The moth, and Esmerelda. Both can fight, though. Ezzy is just a bit small."
"Small?"
"She is around my neck."
"Ah."

"If you don't mind- I assume you would both pay the same, yes?"
The woman frowns.
"More or less. We have the same sort of budget, as it is."
"I've got a higher happiness budget, though." Kenzington chimes in.
"Smiles aren't worth much, less so yours."
"Harsh."

"Well, what is the difference, then? I am headed to the city, then on to the elflands."
"I want to be there when you call it that, please."
"My caravan makes a round trip through the city, then across to the coast, and down to the dwarfholds. We'd part ways at the city. And my chef is far better."
"She's just saying that 'cause I do the cooking. We head wherever the cargo leads us- I've got a deal with Oakring and a few other villages, but they're all based on whenever we show up."

"So you don't know where you're going?"
"Not till the wagons are loaded."
"Mhm."

It won't, because REQM's writing remains pleasant to read.

HOWEVER, that just means either option would have been fun to read, and we chose the slower option that does not get us where we actually wanted to go for a longer period of time.

I'm fairly sure you're going to go to the trade city first since both caravans are loaded up with silk. They need to get to larger markets ASAP to avoid the other caravan hurting the price because their supply showed up. If Ken doesn't head towards elflands from there, you just sign on with someone else in the trade city.
>>
Well, they're both expected to "all but race back to the city" to sell the spider silk, so I expect Kenzington won't detour too much, if at all. Maybe one or two extra days on the road, but a higher chance of sleeping at an inn and having social encounters in exchange.

Well, there's no need to bring it up here. You shouldn't assume that REQM will be petty like that.
>>
>>40002605
Yeah, REQM gets a lot of feedback saying that.

Lyra's lines are pretty easy to get due to her style of speaking, and most of say, Nin and Sheszka's lines are also usually fine due to this, though not always, but the minor characters tend to get very muddled
>>
>>40003302

Dude, Archelon is a sterling example of every way a complete cluster fuck of QM. This kind of back and forth autism fueled debate is a cornerstone of /tg/. Every thread on this board with enough anons with have one sooner or later, and this is pretty civil compared to a lot of shitstorms that already happened in this quest. Don't apply Archelon's fuck ups outside of his quests.
>>
>>40003202
They didn't specify which city they were heading towards, leaving it to be assumed that it was the trade city they were both planning on selling the silk in.
With Raea's route, they'll be heading to the city, the along the coast, and down to the dwarfholds. That means the east coast, while Ellsvier (the elflands) requires heading west. Meanwhile, Kenzington doesn't have a set course after he reaches the city.
>>
REQM and this quest are both examples of what to do right, the QM handles the autism moments in stride, and when they occur theyre generally quite tame.

"I think I will travel with Mr. Kenzington, then."
"Just Kenzington, please. Or Ken."
"Isn't it your last name?"
"Last name?"
"Family name, then."
"Yup."

That's all the explanation you'll get from that, then?

"Well then- Blessings to you all." Raea says.
"You too, Shark." The man returns.
You're lost here.

The female caravan head keeps speaking, anyway.
"I'll be taking the road first, then."
"You'd do it anyway."
"Nonsense. We had a deal."
"Alright, scoot."

"Profits and Luck, bastard."
"Love of the road, Hag."

Raea marches around the corner, yelling something that has her crew doubling up their effort.
You turn back to your new caravan lead.
"You know each other, then?"

He laughs.

"There aren't too many people who can lead a pile of merchants halfway around the world. Hells, half of them need to take a shot at going it alone before they'll even sign on."
"I met one of those, yes."
"Really? Up here?"
"In the forest. He snuck past the guards."

"Got in trouble, then."
"Almost eaten by wolves. And then banned from town, I think.
"Sounds about right. Well, dear- We'll be meeting at the edge of town, two turns past sunrise."
"Isn't that late?"

"'s Better to stagger the caravans. If both of us arrive in the city at the same time, people try to play prices off each other. If she gets there a day ahead- Her stocks all gone, and people are hungry for more. Makes it easier on both of us."
"I see? Should I bring my things in the morning, or do things need to be packed away?"
"I'll make sure there's space."

"Thank you, yes? See you in the morning."
"Blessings be, kiddo."

You wave away as you start to walk.
Wait- he could tell you were young?

You try to think about what gave you away as you walk, meandering back to Elle's house. To dinner, your family, and a goodbye.
But first-

You snag the elf walking quietly behind you, dragging her into a fierce hug, pinning her arms tight so she can't even reciprocate.
"I will miss you, yes? You are fun to be around, Lann."
"I'll... probably miss you too, brat."
"I'll take what I can get."

She returns the embrace when you drop her back to the ground, waving goodbye as you trot for home.

Dinner is warm. And far quieter than usual.

Your brothers dragged a bear back for you- Ezzy wakes up for her special rabbit, determined as she is to finish it all alone. Even Nin sits quietly, eating her salad.

It's your mother that finally breaks the silence, peering around the circle at each of you in turn.

"So," she says slowly. "Tomorrow."
Each person echoes the words, trying it on for size. It feels a bit awkward to you.

"Stop that, yes? We will see each other again soon. I will keep an eye on the time for your father, I promise."
Dad glows with embarrassment as conversation starts back up, each of you all chiming in, chattering about plans and futures-

"The travelling is putting a bit of a kink in the queen plan, but I can improvise-"
"I'm gonna hunt the biggest-" "I'll hunt a bigger one-" "Nuh-uh!"
"You should have seen Theresa, standing and yelling and everyon clamouring for my silks-"
"Which should I visit first, do you think? You said this library had more books, but this one will help me study and-"
"Where are the good dungeons?" "Everywhere, dear." "But- The good ones, yes?" "There's a city that is built on dungeons. There are dungeons- proper dungeons, everywhere." "Proper dungeons?" "The ones that come back, yes-"
>>
>>40003581
Conversation slows, turns, people talking and reminiscing, sharing stories and jokes. There's a lot of laughing about you. Jin encourages it.

And when the fire runs low, you make a circle round your family, holding each in turn. Saying your goodbyes.

Mom is quiet, eyes teary, holding you roughly, pulling you tight. Noone else hears her whispers.
"I love you, little one. And you will always make me proud, yes."
You squeeze her back, and she hands you off to your father.

Tall as he is, he can't give comparable hugs. Or take them. He does the best he can, his head next to yours.
"Keep your stories, Lyra. I'll want to hear each and every one. I'll see you again soon."
"Mhm."

Aria's is short, her forehead and horns pressing against yours, eyes half-closed.
"I'll beat you yet, yes."
"Keep dreaming."
"I'll beat you and then I'll beat Mom."

You both laugh, and you both refuse to tell your mother what is so funny.
You need to walk tomorrow.

Elle gives you a smile and a graceful little hug, her arms nearly as soft as her silk.
"Thank you, yes? For all the encouragement. And the house, I guess."
"Well, thank you for clothing me. And my friends."
"And the tents and blankets."
"Those too."
"They're by the door, yes? Don't forget them."
You nod.

Sara doesn't want to let you go, a little light show playing off her back as she sways in your grasp, hugging you back.
"You could come with me, you know, Lyra?"
"I think- what I want to find, it won't be inside a book, yes?"
"Mm."
"We will see each other again. Leave me letters at the guild. It will be easier to find you, I think."
"I'm travelling too, yes."
"I will follow the trail of book forts, then."
"You better visit."
You kiss her forehead.

"I will, yes."

Your brothers make it a two-for-one- Hugging you at the same time, for one brilliant moment, not fighting or competing.
Each whispers their goodbye in your ear.
"You're pretty good at hunting, but I'm the best, yes." "Don't tell Zach, but I'm better than him. And you."
"I will miss you both, yes?"
"we'll miss you too."

Everyone sleeps close together that night, piled in the middle of the room, a mess of blankets and spiders and a few extra monsters and an elf.
You wake with the dawn.

A few more teary-eyed goodbyes see you out the door, loaded with supplies, gear, with tents and blankets and sleepy friends.
Your mother and father, sisters and brothers all wave as you make for the edge of the village.

The caravan is there. A long train of wagons, men and women moving about in the dew laden morning, readying gear and animals alike.
Kenzington claps you on the shoulder, shouting- People scramble into their wagons, reins crack loudly in the quiet air. And it starts to move, one at a time, then all togther, down the road and away from the village.

Lann is at the guard post, a sleepy salute chasing you away. You wave frantically, following the trail, out into the world beyond

It's a few hours before the village fades from sight. The road was straight, and only now has begun to curl, wrapping back and forth down a slope, following a wide river.

You look at the plains beyond, at an unfamiliar horizon.

And you swallow hard, pulling idly at your armour, your heart wild in your ears, and you walk into the unknown.

And with that, today's thread is over.

Thank you all for helping me make it to 100 threads!
Monday is probably a write-off. It's a holiday, and I'll likely be busy all day.
I'll make time for an extra thread, maybe Tuesday or wednesday, and we should have our usual thursday.

As usual, comments and questions can be directed here while I'm in thread!

Lyra most definitely waved until her arms were too tired to keep it up.

Hah, this vid makes me wonder what traditional arachne dances would be like.
>>
>>40003867
Vigorously, but with as little floor stabbing as possible to avoid tripping?
>>
....I can admit with honesty REQM that Lyra's farewells with her family made me teary-eyed and brought my sugar levels to dangerous heights.....damn good thread.
>>
>>40003915
I'm glad you enjoyed them.

Done in places without plants.
Or with plants you don't mind being dead afterwards.

Mostly, they try and limit the movements to their upper body with modern dances.

>>40003855
Thanks for playing!
Sara's a bit of an indoor spider, I'm afraid. She'll always be there for you, the sames as you would for her, though.
>>
And now for Lyra's first encounter. A group of weak goblins lead by a delusional ogre.
>>
Also:
I'll be looking into slapping everything into a pdf, or ebook file.
As the google docs is essentially unusable without crashing my browser, and even the txt file is starting to lag at this point.

I think I've pushed it a little far.

This would be amusing, satisfying and terrifying.

I'm hoping for bears. A mafia of bears, even.

Saw this yesterday and realised it will probably be Nin's final form.

I'd make moths with that

Finally! after 100 chapters (episodes?)
>>
>>40004051
This would be the end of book one yes?
>>
>>40004738
That seems, very appropriate actually, or chapter 1? the prologue being the first evolution?
>>
>>40004738
>>40004812
I'd say book one.

Last thread someone was asking about other forms of armor yes? Or was it clothes?
>>
>>40004812

I cannot wait to see this in book pdf/mobi/epub format!
>>

Quick, someone find an anon who can rework this into a novel, update the series as the Quest progresses. It would still release faster than many shorter book series.
