Sharp artificial light assaults your vision, and the warm, smooth embrace of a baby grand’s pianissimo tread dances softly about your ears.

As your eyes open up, they are greeted by a somewhat well-lit room, rather dark in palette for your tastes. Bodies flit about in vibrant, yet tastefully modest cocktail dresses like human peacocks, while light banter accompanying them wherever they slink about the padded booths in the joint. In the corner you see the source of the rather bluesy, quiet tune; a man in a muted, purple sleeveless vest overtop a white oxford dances his lithe fingers across the black and white. You could say that the curtains tied together the classy environment in their nice, suede b-

‘Sir”

You turn a quick 180 to see a man in similarly dressed fashion as the piano man.

“Sir, will that be all to drink tonight?”

The man has a white washcloth to wipe down what looks like a highball gla- Oh that’s right, you’re hammered as shit. On a Wednesday. In that classy bar downtown.

Your thoughts always did wander when drunk…

Shit, were you passed out? You definitely could hold your liquor better than that…but the face-shaped streak of drool on the polished wood bar top says differently. Nice job.

The ‘tender is clearly starting to get impatient with the snoozing boozehound at the end of his bar counter (Note: you). This place was classy to keep out people like you after all, in his reasoning.

God, you hated these people…and this place. So Pretentious.

Well, you may have just passed out on a bar counter, but you’re not exactly a rookie. Better stop while you’re ahead, otherwise that creeping throbbing in the back of your head is going to escalate to the intensity of Phil Collins’ In The Air Tonight on repeat. You know the part. Not that it matters, it’s not like you need to get up early in the morning for a job

At least, not anymore.

You briefly consider grabbing another of the regulars- Jack and Coke of course- to numb the Wednesday blues a bit more. But, considering you just passed out in public, something which hasn’t happened since the glory days in College (heh, College), it’s best you don’t. Bartender would probably put something in it out of spite, like Polymer Shavings or something. You laugh out loud at your own morose, old guy humor. God you’re slammed.

You order a club soda just to get the young, snappy bartender off your back. God, did you just call him young? He’s like 28.

Man, you feel old. Man, this piano guy is good.

At least you restrained yourself, a bit late there though. It’s not like your wife would kick your ass for hopping back on the Jack-train…

…At least, not anymore.

You need to change your drunk-ass thoughts. Something must be happening in this place.

>That lady in the corner is strangely dressed
> Did I say that piano man is great? Because he’s great.

You know how at the zoo, you go to the exotic bird cages and you can’t really tell them all apart? The vibrant colors, the flashiness, the gaudiness, and all the pomp of the tropic birds just blends together into one, bright, aching, wet dream of a frat-boy’s color palette; the creatures all chittering and chattering, attempting to scream their individuality, screaming how unique and healthy they are, all condensed into one smelly, feathery, hivemind.

There’s an eagle was sitting in the corner of that living rainbow, in one of the booths.

Contrasted against the muted palettes of the walls and the shining, pastel, and vibrancy of the rest of the patrons, the lady wears what could only be described as a deep maroon cloak with head covering, a mix of what you may consider a woman’s poncho and a hijab. The wood of the table covers the rest of her lower body, yet you can make out one more, distinguishing feature.

She has gold eyes.

Must be those newfound contact lenses or something. Not that you’ll complain, they’re…enchanting, really…

You haven’t really done this thing since College (HEH, COLLEGE), making a straight, cold-footed approach. Even IF your memories may have a bit of golden sheen on them, you can’t forget the results of the last attempt. You involuntarily shudder.

Oh man, that wasn’t a good one. Please stop, alcohol.

Maybe it isn’t the booze. You can safely say the tightening in your chest and throat, the tugging at your mind, and the sudden acute clarity of every motion in every muscle of your body is new.

Not to mention the butterflies. But, those were less “new” than more long dead and gone. You don’t feel those little guys normally around a woman- or anyone really.

At least, not anymore.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jz8c17upEwM
As you cross the room to her corner, you begin to hear a soft humming, melody sheltered under the cover of the rolling jazz of the piano. It’s coming from the woman in red.

You also notice her playing around with something in her hands, what looks like a deck of cards… Suddenly, before you consciously realize so, you’re nearly standing at her secluded table.

The two golden suns rise to meet your own, a small smile playing at their corners while her mouth remains in a deadpan neutral expression. The tattoos below her left eye and across her cheek wiggle a bit as the muscle relaxes underneath… Not unlike a wolf staring at a sheep, but more comparable to that of a grandmother staring at a toddler, playing with his food.

You notice she has red hair underneath to match her choice of strange, (and even stranger) somewhat familiar feeling garb. The mahogany table still covers everything below her mid torso and –by extension- her maroon dress.

“Care for a Fortune, stranger?”

Hunh, what kind of accent is that? It’s not one you’ve heard before. English? Southern US? German? Chinese? No…a mix, maybe? Either way, it sounds almost melodic, like she’s singing rather than talking. You’ll stow that question away for a little bit.

Sure, you say. If she’s willing why not? With a laugh, you warn her in advance that your future is guaranteed to be – in comparison- bleaker than her shining eyes.

“I think I’ll be the judge of that,” she responds in the same sing-song voice.

As she shuffles the old, yellowing deck of cards in her hands you notice just how ancient those things are. Seriously, are those things even paper? It looks like they could be some sort of thick, layered vellum even, worth some SERIOUS money, even for you.

What’s a kid doing as a professional fortune teller, let alone doing her business in a bar like this?

For a brief moment, a wide grin shines across her visage when you briefly refer to her as “kid” in passing, she nearly looks ready to burst into laughter for a split second before reverting to the old, smoldering composure she’s had up until that came out of your mouth.

“Who says I ‘Tell’ Fortunes?”

"Pick your 10 cards," as she spreads the many cards out in front of you to choose.

You feel something, though you can't put your finger on it. It's the same feeling as before, when you waltzed over to this red chick.

Is this fear?

The frantic tugging grows stronger in the depths of your mind, you feel like your arms are being pulled by....something...towards specific cards. Ever time you select one, you can almost hear a click reverberate behind your eyes.

Finally, the cards are- slowly and deliberately- chosen, and she lays them in a blocky, escalating structure to your front.

(1) Death
>"oh dear...."
(2) Hermit
(3) Hierophant
>"So, that's who it is..."
(4) Sun
>she smiles
(5) Last Judgement
>Her eyes narrow immediately
(6) The Fool [this seems...off]
>you see a brief lapse of confusion on her face
(7) 6 of Pentacles
(8) Ace of Swords
(9) 9 of cups
(10) Knight of Wands

>>39995613
(11???)

As she checks under the (8) card, you see that you accidentally had grabbed in your little anxiety attack. Oops.

Wait, why is the card blank?

The feeling of pressure in your skull has reached painful levels. Okay, this is NOT a hangover, it’s official. Your body is not in pain, but rather feels stretched, numb, like it has fallen asleep.

Fuck, fuck fuck, fuckity fuck,

The lady still holds the card in her hand, staring at it. Her twin suns rise to look at you with what you can even see as fear, maybe a bit of curiousity, and is that…is that hope?

Sweet Jesus, what is going o-

The anxiety is still growing in the back of your skull.

No.

No, you’re done with this, this woman, and this entire weird as hell Wednesday.

“I AM Steven Blum.
I am who I am, I’ve always made my own decisions and my own way, no matter the circumstances. I am my own man through and through, no illusions, no cards, no job, and no fortune teller are going to change who I am.
I don’t know who you are…and quite frankly I don’t care. This is my life. I haven’t gone through a decade in the military to be off put by your...whatever it is you do.”

The Red Lady simply stares intently, watching your declaration with interest and a hint of admiration.
“Interesting, coming from the man who just got his future….told” She hesitates before letting the last word slip out.
“You would think a man your age would have lost his passion, his drive by now…” she mutters as a smile begins to etch its way into her visage.

Oh hell no, you didn't say that.

You stand from your seat, arms fully extended onto the table which you’re leaning on. The Red Lady seems to- if only for a split, fraction of a second- shrink back from your display of raw determination.

Through your clenched teeth, you growl...

“Not yet, Red Bitch. Not yet."
And you turn to walk away.

Funny, you didn’t think you had that in you, you think as you stand. Certainly nobody else would have thought so either, you don’t look the part after all: around 5’11’, more lanky than muscular, wild black hair streaked with bits of grey, and with seemingly standard brown eyes which- at the given moment- radiate the drive and power of an earthquake than the drab, dull color of dirt. You had told the truth though, you were going to make your own way. No job, no companion, no idea…

But that also means nothing to lose. Damn if you’re gonna let life have a toss with you, not after all you’ve accomplished. After all you’ve suffered, achieved, survived, and felt. You’re a grown ass ma-

What lies before you looks like the same bar as before in the same manner that the ABC looks like the Cathedral of Notre Dame.

Actually, to be honest this place looks exactly like that…a Cathedral. An odd sense of belonging overcomes you as you look upon the polished stone wall, stain glass, and pews stretched in front of you for at least 90 meters.

You went to the Bar, dammit. Not a church.

You immediately notice some structural similarities to the former bar, however. A lone pew is placed where the bar stools were last time you checked, in the (now) far, dark corner of the room- an altar enshrined in front of it. As you look closer in the shadows, you can see something move in the faint candlelight.
That would have been about where you were sitting…was there someone there before?

What is going on.

Should we say our prayers first?

Yeah this

Don't feel like getting raped in a church
Don't want to go out like that

Speaking to no-one in particular "Where is this place, and how did you bring me here?"

Then, turn towards the shadows and the movement. "And why are you hiding from me now?"

I hope so.

well, seems like an appropriate time for one if they do. In this place, and the end of a thread

Oh yeah they do.
Also, thread archive.

Rules, role system, and continuation of the story can be found in tomorrow's thread.

Now, Discussion/Questions/Suggestions?

do you have a twitter to announce the next thread?
>>
>>39999397

I just joined and I think it's interesting. Although since this thread was so short I can't really say much more.

Don't bother making a new thread. It's most likely that this one will survive til tomorrow.
>>
>>39999420
Not as of yet, I'll have one by tomorrow's thread.

Expect a tentative 3pm (Eastern) start time for it, otherwise

This certainly seems interesting enough. I always did have a hard-on for tarot motifs.
This isn't a PersonaQuest is it?
>>
>>39999505

I would not mind a serious Persona Quest that takes place outside of Japan.
>>
>>39999505
I have no idea what that means.

If it answers your question, I just wanted to write a living, interactive story. It's been about three years since I last wrote any sort of literature.
