So, since you're in town, I thought I'd ask you for help. You might not be a guard anymore technically, but it would be worth a bag of gold to me if you found him so that fool Henry will stop bothering me already."

You consider your old captain's offer. You only have today, tomorrow, and the day after until you return to the tower. A bag of gold would be nice, but searching for the thief might cut into your free time and there's no guarantee you'll even find or catch him.

Sure enough, the market is quite crowded when you arrive. Not as much as it usually would be, but the merchants are definitely still getting business. They advertise their wares loudly, while people crowd around their stalls and into their stores. The loud chatter of merchants and customers makes it hard to be heard.

"You'd think the market would be kind of empty after a demon attack." Erika comments, seemingly baffled at how crowded the market is despite recent events.

"Morsland is a trade city, business won't die down that easy. Besides, after all the damage the demons caused it makes sense people would come to buy tools to fix their houses or replacements for what they lost."

The two of you quietly walk around the marketplace, searching for any sign of the thief. It almost feels nostalgic, patrolling for pickpockets like you used to. Back in the day it always felt kind of boring, but at least then you never had to worry about demons.

Almost a half hour later, you can tell the boredom is starting to get to Erika, who's growing more and more impatient.

"See anything yet?"

"It's been almost an hour, how much longer do we keep looking?"

"It's actually only been thirty minutes. Give it another hour or so, if we haven't found anything by then we'll go look somewhere else."

"Sh!" You hush, stopping dead in your tracks. You thought you heard something familiar for a second.

You look in the direction of these voices, and see two people talking in front of a fruit merchant's stall. You recognize Roland, still very well dressed, speaking to a brown haired woman wearing a simple dress. Roland is currently holding a bag of fruit, apparently given to him by her.

No doubt about it, you recognize him as the pickpocket from the festival. Meanwhile, Roland doesn't seem to notice that his coin purse has been taken.

Technically speaking there's nothing stopping her from fighting humans, but it could give Rathaniel an excuse to recall her back to the Void. Plus, she's sealed in the sword, so while she can essentially fight like a dancing sword can in DnD, she's only so effective without someone wielding her.

The thief doesn't even have time to process what you're doing before you release your hold on Galadriel and he's suddenly drawn face first onto the ground, completely caught off-guard by Galadriel's immense weight.

"Well, that's one way to catch him." Erika comments after catching up to you.

The thief's surprised shout causes some of the bystanders to turn their heads to see what's going on. This includes Roland, who turns away from the woman he was speaking to and walks over once he realizes it's you.

"Siegfried? What's going on?"

"Oh nothing, just taking care of this thief is all. Oh yeah, you might want this back." You tell him, tossing the coin purse the thief stole back to Roland.

"My coin purse? When did I lose this?"

"This guy stole it just a moment ago, while you were busy talking."

"Oh did he now?" Roland says, looking down on the captured thief. "Well, I'm glad you caught him then, thank you."

"Gah! Sweet Aureus, someone pull this dagger off me, it's crushing my hand!" The thief complains, pinned to the ground by the weight of the small dagger in his hands.

The thief follows quickly mutters the incantation for a spell you're very familiar with, Flash. Your familiarity with the spell's incantation gives you the warning you need to cover your eyes before the spell goes off, just in time to avoid being blinded. A while later, you're back at the guard post with the thief in tow. He must have learned his lesson, because there were no more attempts to escape after that. Once the guards see that you've returned with the thief, they quickly usher him into a jail cell in the back, and ask you to wait for Captain Gregory to arrive. It doesn't take long for him to come down from his office to meet you.

"Well I'll be damned, I didn't think you'd find him so quickly."

"Just got lucky sir, we happened to be in the right place at the right time."

"I see. Well, I'm sure Henry will be happy to hear that we've caught him, I'll send someone to tell him now."

"Alright. Also sir, you should probably know that he really is a spellcaster like the castle guard claimed. You might want to keep a close eye on him, just in case he tries to escape again."

The jail lies in the back of the guard post, behind a reinforced door. Most of the cells are empty, save the one at the end where the thief is now sitting. You, Erika, and Roland pull up chairs and sit in front of his cell, while the thief sits on the prison in front of you, behind the iron bars of his cell.

"Well what do you know, it's only been five minutes and I'm already getting visitors. I had no idea I was so popular."

"Have you ever tried it? There's a certain thrill to theft you can't find anywhere else. You can't help but think 'What if I'm caught? What if someone sees me take this guy's purse?', and there's a certain sense of pride in not getting caught or escaping the guards when they come after you, I just can't explain it. I might have started because I needed money, but now I do it because it's what I enjoy. I can't stand normal jobs, they're too damn boring! What's the point of living if you're not enjoying what you're doing, you know?"

"That's perhaps the dumbest excuse I've ever heard in all my years as a guard."

Sirus shrugs. "Maybe it is dumb, but it's what I enjoy."

"Ahaha, that's kind of embarrassing actually." Sirus laughs, rubbing the back of his neck. "I was actually supposed to skip town today on a caravan heading north today, but I thought I'd steal one last purse before I left, for old time's sake. Then lo and behold, there was your rich looking friend there, carrying a hefty purse and completely distracted by that merchant lady. I could tell his accent was foreign too, so I figured I'd never run into him again after I grabbed his purse, but then suddenly you showed up, and here I am now."

"You're awful forthcoming about all this. You know you've pretty much confessed to everything at this point, right?"

"Doesn't matter if I confess or not, as soon as that crybaby Henry hears I'm here, I'm done for no matter what."

Just then, you hear the reinforced door open up and turn to see Captain Gregory leaning in through the doorway.

This is actually a really important point, so I want to harp on it a bit. In the medieval era theives were delt with rather harshly. Stealing meant someone would go hungry or at least face a major setback. And they didn't have the surplus to just keep people locked up. So that meant either extract some kind of labor from them, or, more commonly, mutilation or execution. These attitudes were even more pronounced among city dwellers, of which Sieg is one of. I imagine pre-Watchtower Sieg wouldn't have bothered with him, but after being on the line he's a bit more eager to get some more people out there with him, even if that person is a thief.

The door shuts once again, and you turn back to face Sirus the thief once again. In all honesty, you think he's an absolute fool and his reasoning for being a thief really pisses you off, but you can't help but think how he's managed to cast spells without a foci apparently since he was 10 or 8. As much as you don't like him, you have to admit that's quite the feat, and if he could put that talent towards something more helpful...

'Galadriel, is there any way to conscript criminals to the watchtower instead of serving in prison'

You can feel Galadriel's surprise in the back of your mind when you ask. 'I believe there is, yes. But are you sure about this? He doesn't seem the most trustworthy sort.'

'Maybe not, but he's got talent, you said so yourself. And as much as I don't like him, he could be helpful, and the more helpful people we have at the watchtower, the less likely I am to get stabbed in the back or killed by a demon.'

'There is wisdom in that...If you feel you can keep him in line, then I will support your decision. Tell your captain you wish to enact the Rite of Conscription, he should know what that means.'

"Hey, are you gonna sit there and daydream all day, or can we get this over with already?" Sirus asks, snapping you back to reality.

"Right, sorry. I just have one more question for you."

"And what's that?"

"Have you ever stolen from a demon before?"

Your question catches everybody off guard, including Sirus.

"Siegfried, what are you saying?" Roland asks you, bewildered.

"Yeah, you're not asking him what I think you are, are you?" Erika asks, just as caught off guard as Roland.

"I might be." You answer honestly. "So, have you?"

"As much as I don't like you, I have to admit you've got talent to be able to cast spells without a foci. We're on the brink of a new Crusade, we could use all the talent we've got. If you'll agree to behave yourself, I'll talk to the captain and see if you can't serve your sentence at the watchtower instead of in prison."

"As tempting as that sounds, you're going to have a rough time convincing Henry to allow that."

"You just leave that to me. So what will it be, rot in prison your whole life, or come to the watchtower and serve your sentence there?"

Sirus considers the offer carefully. The others stare at you with faces that can only translate as 'Are you crazy?', but you wait quietly for his answer regardless.

"Alright, fine. Watchtower has to be better than prison or the headsman's axe. Good luck convincing Henry though."

"Like I said, leave that to me."

You, Erika, and Roland exit the reinforced door to the jail and find Gregory, Henry, another man whom you assume is the Lord-Governor, and about five other guards waiting for you.

"About time." Henry complains. "Have you gotten a confession out of him yet?"

"Yes." You answer truthfully.

"Good! Then let's get on with the sentencing then, shall we?"

"Henry, I've already told you, he has to go to trial first before being sentenced."

"Oh what's the point? If he's already confessed then a trial is just a waste of everybody's time."

"Of course Siegfried." The captain interrupts, leading you to the side while Henry shoots him the stink eye.

"Sir, why is this Henry guy hate the thief so much? It goes a bit beyond how any normal person reacts to theft."

"Well, apparently a lot of the valuable stolen belonged to Henry. When they actually saw him, he was actually going through the drawers in Henry's room."

"Is that it?"

"He also apparently knocked Henry out when he was spotted. Henry claims he tried to kill him, but the castle guard's report says he just cast some sort of spell that put him to sleep. I suppose his pride was more wounded then he was."

So in the end, this was all more about pride than anything else. That would explain why the Lord-Governor was ready to let the robbery go while Henry wouldn't.

"Is that all you wanted to pull me aside for?"

"No sir, there's more. I spoke to the thief, Sirus, and I've learned a lot about him, one of which being that he's a self taught mage, and the other that he's been casting spells without a foci."

"And just what's a foci?"

"It's what spellcasters use to help them cast spells, sir. The fact he can actually cast spells without one is amazing, as much as I hate to praise him. If he actually had a foci and put his mind to more helpful things, he could actually be a valuable asset."

"What are you getting at Siegfried?"

"Sir, Galadriel and I are considering enacting the Rite of Conscription for Sirus."

"The rite?! Siegfried, do you have any idea how upset Henry will be if you do that?"

"Sorry sir, I was just thinking-"

"No, I'm not discouraging you, I personally think it will be hilarious to see the look on that pipsqueak's face when you do. All I'm saying is that, even if he has no power, you'd be making an enemy of a noble if you did so. Are you sure you're willing to do that?"

The two of you then return to the rest of the group, where Henry is tapping his foot impatiently.

"Good, you're done, now can we get this underway already?"

"Actually, sir, if I could have a moment of your time I'd like to speak with you about the prisoner as well."

Henry sighs. "Must you? Fine, whatever, I suppose that thief's not going anywhere anyways."

The guards give you some space, as does the Lord-Governor and Captain Gregory, who start discussing something in hushed tones.

"Well then, make it quick." Henry says, crossing his arms.

"Sir, I know you dislike this thief, and for good reason, but if you would allow it I would ask that rather than locking him up you let my companions and I take him back to the Watchtower with us."

"What?!" Henry shouts. "Why in the Void would I ever do that? I'll have you know he nearly killed me!"

It's a win-win for everyone. You get good publicity, the thief gets punished and has to earnestly work to redeem him self and the watchtower gets a valuable recruit. What do you say lord Henry?

Henry ponders this for a moment, before a smile starts to spread on his face. "Yes, yes you may be right."

"Then do we have your permission?"

"Hm...why not? I'm a benevolent man, who am I to hold a grudge?"

It takes all your willpower not to roll your eyes, but you bare with it and motion for everyone to return.

"Gentlemen, I've decided!" Henry announced, the same annoying smile on his face. "Rather than imprisoning this man, I would like to petition for him to serve his sentence at the watchtower instead."

"I see no reason to deny it." The Lord-Governor says. "Does anyone else object?"

"No sir." Captain Gregory agrees.

"Very well, then it's settled. We shall sentence this Sirus the Thief to service in the White Watchtower. May Aureus in the Void guide him towards redemption."

With that, the group begins to part, with Henry and the guards he came with exiting the guard post while Captain Gregory and the Lord-Governor stay behind to speak with you.

"Well I'll be damned, you actually managed to butter that oversensitive child up enough to convince him."

"I must admit, when the captain informed me of your intentions I had my doubts. You have my gratitude, this resolves the matter and my brother did not have to lose face."

"I see, so that's how you swayed him then. I thank you Champion, I shall have your payment sent to your address by tomorrow, with an extra gift from me for handling the matter such a way that my brother did not have to look more foolish then he already has."

"Thank you sir. What's going to happen to Sirus now?"

"He will have to wait here until you and your companions are ready to leave, there are certain preparations that must be made before one who has been conscripted by the rite can leave. Just a few precautions, to make your job easier. I must go now, there is much for me to do between now and then, so I must bid your group farewell. May Aureus smile on you and your friends."

With that, the Lord-Governor leaves as well, followed shortly by Captain Gregory.

"Man, that guy talks waaayy too formally, even for a noble, but at least he's not an ass like his brother." Erika comments once they're out of earshot.

"I agree, but Siegfried, are you sure this is a good idea? I mean, you're letting a thief into the watchtower. It might work for the Gray Watchtower, but things are a little different at the White Watchtower."

"It'll be fine, I might not like the guy but he's got talent, and we're gonna need all the help we can get once the crusade starts. Besides, if he tries something we could always just send him back here for Henry to deal with."

"I guess. Anyways, let's get out of here, it's already starting to get late."

Considering how forthcoming he was with his motives, and how....easy to work with....said motives are?

I'm not kidding when I say that booze is the biggest thing he'd steal. It's not really fun to steal weapons and armor, and the only macguffin to steal is Galadriel. Running away from extremely sober knights sounds way more thrilling.

and that's assuming he won't enjoy stealing from demons.
