In the real world you are Anthony Grant, but here you are Ambrosis the level 40 Cleric, leader of the <1st Panzer Division>, inventor of the land-ship, captain of the Manifest Destiny, and soon to be captain and creator of the first airship.

You leave the safety of Pueblo's earthen walls and emerge in the desert beyond. You take the moment to admire the sight. Yellow grass and shrubs dot the dry land while tiny cactus monsters and dire desert rats bob up and down along the horizon. The first level monsters in MMOs always seemed cute or harmless in some way. You begin to wonder if this had some kind of psychological implication about people's willingness to pay for things and the wholesale murder of adorable creatures. Your thoughts then shift to noticing that no one else is out here. People probably approach the game differently now that combat feels so real. You yourself are not quite sure how you could adjust to combat so quickly, but then again you have not been trying to get into combat. Every fight you've been in wasn't a fight you started. Even that fight against King Aubron was started because he kidnapped Lilac, but...

You never took the time to think about those Umbra you took out. They were enemies, hostile mobs even, but to that same merit, Aideen was the exact same way...

You feel a tug on your hand.

You turn to see Judicature standing next to you. She looks a bit concerned, so you respond with a smile and a kiss.

Her lips form a soft smile back and she returns the kiss.

“Yarr!” You hear a familiar voice from behind you, “I see the captain's found himself some booty.”

You see Judi's face goes red before the two of you turn to see Trove standing before you with a big grin on his bearded face.

“Wha- N- Umm... Well...” The duelist rambles with half-words and incomplete sentences, finally ending with her laughing nervously to herself, having spoken yet said nothing.

You take a deep breath and say...

[ ] “Yep.” Grab a hold of some booty.
[ ] “Sorry about that, we didn't think anyone was watching.”
[ ] “No, no. I'm more interested in her ... large tracts of land.”

“No, no.” You respond, “I'm more interested in her … large tracts of land.” You make a certain hand gesture to emphasize your statement.

The Pirate laughs. “Yar. Land be a investment anyways!”

You and the Brewer start laughing together.

As your laughter dies you glance over to Judicature who has a less than enthused face. Her eyes speak of a future punishment for you, and you can only hope it will be one you enjoy.

You clear your throat. “Yes, well, we should get going as soon as everyone shows up.”

“Yar!” Trove agrees; at least, that is what you think he is doing.

You turn to look back at the horizon and someone was standing directly behind you. You instinctively jump back in surprise only to realize it was Takeshi. You almost did not recognize him without his iconic equipment.

His “samurai” robes have been replaced by a leather jerkin and his bamboo hat has been replaced by a leather that looked a bit like an old football helmet with a few extra metal bits studded in the leather. You glance down to see that he still had the nodachi. Baby steps, you suppose.

“Don't sneak up on me.” You tell the young man.
>>
>>39999839
“I am sorry.” He responds with a bow, “I just thought I should start acting more like an Assassin.”

Part of you wonders if you should not have said that, but you have no time for that.

You look at the group that have gathered. Without Lilac and Canis here, this is the full party, unless you break up the three recent additions to the team.

Almost as if on cue, the three come bursting from the city gate, riding the hydra that had previously powered the Manifest Destiny.

“Onwards!” Edifice shouts from the back of the monster, “To end the JIF menace!”

“I don't think this is how we are supposed to use the summons.” Tarot laments.

“If it is possible, it is allowed!” Carnegie responds. Before the three ride the monster off, Carnegie and you share a glance. “First to make a stack is the winner!”

You did not intend for this to be a competition, but you certainly don't want to lose to them.

You take the moment to think. With two slots open, you could probably get your brother and Symbology in on this party to truly trounce this competition, but you would get no Xp from this entire thing.

[ ] Winning is more important than levels! Get the high levels to join your party.
[ ] Levels are more important that silly competitions, and who knows, you might still win.
[ ] Winning is important, but you'd much rather do so without Symbology. Add brother to party only.

Huh.

Does anyone want to change their vote to this?

It would get you xp and speed up your collection, but it would also slow down their ability to collect grays and would ultimately slow down the entire group's net gray gains over time.
>>
>>40000356
what are grays?
>>
>>40000382
Gray items. Vendor trash. The intestine that are being used to create the gas bladder for the airship are not normal crafting items, they're actually supposed to be sold to NPCs for some extra gold, but due to the databasing, they can be used for things other than selling.

“Pffft.” Is all you have to respond with to those three. “We could win easily if we just called my brother in, but that's not going to get us any xp. Then again, you could probably call down your brother to help out AND get xp if he uses the mentor system. When was the last time you two actually partied together anyways?

You look through your friend list and hit [Call] under your brother's name.

He picks up with a “Hello?”

“Mentor system?” You ask.

“Mentor system.” He responds.

You add him to the party and his HP and MP suddenly drop like a rock. It looked like he lost a good 100k HP from that.

You glance to your side to see Symbology meandering out into the desert.

“Hey!” You shout out to her, “Want to join our party? You can use the mentor system!”

“I'd rather one-shot a bunch of low level creatures!” She responds, “We're trying to do this as fast as possible, right?”

“Fine!” You respond. You didn't really want her to join anyways.

Your brother soon shows up and the five of you go off in search of something level appropriate.

“Yar! We should lookin' for something a bit below our level.” Trove says, “Yar.”

“I've got raid-gear.” Your brother gloats, “I'm practically two party members.”

“Yar. We should still be careful.”

“Well, we've got two tanks and a healer,” Your brother says, “So, we should probably be pulling things two at a time.”

“Yar. That sounds like a bad-” The Pirate is cut off.

“I'm pulling!” Vertigo shouts as a mighting kick of his produces a whirlwind that slams into two Dire Desert Wolves. Both are level 40.

“God damn it, Zachery!” You shout.

“We got this!” Your brother reassures you.

Battle is joined!

You sigh in disappointment. Why must your brother be this way?

“SWORDS OF CHERUBIM!” You shout. You charge forward, mace in the air, and slam your weapon into the face of the first wolf. With an unsettling crunch, flames and light burst from the point of contact and everyone's weapons begin to glow with power, yours included.

“Fan of knives!” Judicature extends an arm out and a shower of knives pour from her golden sleeve, the rain of blows slam into both monsters, dealing a substantial amount of damage. Little bursts of flame and light spring off of each hit.

“Now is my chance to show the world MY power!” Takeshi charges forward, his massive sword swings as he shouts, “EXECUTE!” The assassin sheathes his swords and comments, “You are already dead.” The white [MISS] that appears above the creature's head begs to differ.

The first wolf begin to close distance of Judicature, but a cry of thunder breaks out and a bullet slams into the monster. “Yar har! Taunting Shot, me harries!” The pirate returns the not-quite-real gun to his coat and takes a stance, preparing himself for what is to come next.

The Wolf howls in response, buffing the damage of himself and the other wolf next to him.

“Hey Takeshi!” Your brother shouts, “You should wait to confirm hitting the thing before actually saying something, like this!” You brother kicks his leg into the air then slams his foot down like a hammer, hitting absolutely nothing. “Uh... No one saw that!”

As if for maximum comedic effect, second wolf turns to Vertigo and clamps down on him with a powerful chop, dealing a solid amount of damage Thankfully Monks have a lot of HP to spare.

You lift your mace into the air. “Judgment ray!” Holy runes are draw a circle in the air and a massive pillar of light shoots out from the text. The blow does a horrific amount of damage to the first wolf, almost sending it falling onto its side.

“Swords of Cherubim means lots of tiny attacks!” Your brother shouts, “Gotta maximize that bonus damage!” He begins to rapidly punch the second wolf. “Flurry of blows! ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA!”

“I... I won't be made a fool of!” Takeshi shouts. “Axel Fang, Axel Fang, Axel Fang!” With each hit he gains a buff that further increases his attack speed.

Trove reaches into this coat once more and pulls out a bottle of rum. He drinks from the bottle and is buffed with Belligerence of Rum, increasing his dodge.

Not to be outdone, the golden juggle pulls out a knife. “Bouncing blade!” She tosses the knife, which goes bouncing back and forth between the two wolves until it finally misses.

The first wolf only has a sliver of health left, but it still stands. It opens its mouth and charges the pirate, but the intoxicated man only sidesteps the wolf's attack.

The second wolf does very much the same, eating dirt instead of your beloved brother.

You exhale after that wonderful display of damage and slap the first wolf in the face with your trust mace. It does not do too much damage, and you can't see the monster's health bar anymore, but it still his more than 0 HP. A green ring shines on your brother and he his healed for some of the damage he tool.

Trove once more pulls out the flintlock pistol and fires, but the shot goes wide, keeping the wolf alive for a bit longer.

“EXECUTE~!” Takeshi shouts, lobbing off the first wolf's head in a display that can only be described as overkill. With his increased attack speed, however, he turns to the second wolf and hits it with a “Bleeding Blade!” The sword cuts deep and blood showers the assassin. “You are already dead.” He says.

“No he isn't!” Shouts Vertigo. The monk does a back flip striking the jaw of the monster and knocking it into the air.

As if on cue, Judi jumps into the air after it, flinging a blade with “Pinning Knife!” The monster slams back to the ground and is now pinned to the dry desert dirt.

The second wolf is completely unable to act after that onslaught.

The glow from everyone's weapons fades and Swords of Cherubim are no longer in effect.

This thing is almost dead, all that's left is to finish it off! With the thing pinned, it can't even dodge!

You charge the thing and go to town with your mace, trying to turn this monster's skull concave.

“Kaiser Blade Sling!” Judi throws another blade, this one becomes quite massive in as it flies through the air, and hits the monster with a [CRITICAL] dealing damn fine damage.

“Assassinate!” Takeshi strikes the monster once more with his massive sword, cutting deep into the creature's skull. The thing is a step from heaven's door.

“Yar! Fire the cannons!” Trove pulls a tiny battery of cannons that looks almost like scale model for a child. He tosses them on the ground with this left hand, in one fluid motion grabs onto the ropes sticking out of the cannons and gives them a tug. The barrage does some nice damage, but THE DAMN THING ISN'T DEAD YET! FUCK YOU, YOU GOD DAMN WOLF! The cannons disappear into a storm of bubbles.

It is up to your brother to kill this damn thing! “Earth Shaker!” He strikes the ground and stone shoots up from the ground, puncturing the monster and knocking its HP to 0.
>>
>>40003730
The beast bursts into a sea of bubbles and leaves a number of items behind. Taking stock of the monsters you just killed, you have received two health potions, a mana potion, a hundred gold, and two ruptured intestines.

“Told you we'd be fine.” Your brother says, hands on his hips like superman, “Raid-gear beats everything. That's just science.”

“The intestines are broken...” Judi points out, “Is that okay?”

You think back to a conversation you had with Lilac. “Well, according to Lilac, we're going to grind this up into a paste and then mix it with rubber, then take that stuff and put it over the spider silk to make a sealed balloon.” At least that's how you remember.

Takeshi falls backwards to a sitting position. His breath is heavy. “I'm exhausted!” You notice almost all of his MP is gone. Thinking on it, that's probably the endurance of these bodies. Good to know.

“Get up, Takeshi.” You say, “I want to beat Carnegie and his friends, and that means we can't take a rest until we really need it.”

“At least let me recover my MP.” Takeshi responds.

You ponder for a moment and then turn to your brother. “Pull us another monster, and ONLY ONE monster, and kite it back here.”

Zachery seems to consider the order, and then gives you a thumbs up. “Gotcha!” With that he runs off into the distance.

Everyone has a couple of seconds to recover their cool downs and regain some MP.

You look over to Judicature. “So, what was that Kaiser Blade thing? Seemed to do a bunch of damage.”

“Some call it a Sling Blade.” She responds with a giggle, “But I call it a Kaiser Blade.”

You are quite confused.

“You haven't seen Sling Blade either!?”

“Is that the one where the guy talks about tears in the rain?”

“That's Blade Runner!”

“Oh. Right.”

She puts on an overly exaggerated frown on her face. “You're getting punished tonight.” She whispers.

You smile. “Oh nooooo~!”

She crosses her arms and looks away, “Well, then you're not.”

You kiss her cheek. “So, what does Kaiser Blade do?”

“It automatically crits against an enemy whose target has more than the double hate you do.”

“Ah. Interest-”

You are cut off by the ground shaking and your brother yelling, “I pulled the monster!”

You turn around to see a Giant Desert Tortoise stomping towards you. Its level is 42.

“What the hell, Zachery!?” You shout.

“Huge monsters mean huge guts!” He responds.

“Argent chain!” If you were going to start this off, you were going to do it right. A blinding light shoots from your hand and a bright chain wraps itself around the creature's eyes, blinding it.

Your brother is quick to taunt the creature with an “Enraging Kick!” It deals very minimal damage, which is a bit disheartening.

“Yar Har!” Trove fires his gun and does some more minimal damage and also taunting the creature. Something doesn't seem right here.

“Execute!” Takeshi slams his blade into the monster and the steel sword, folded over a million times, bounces back like it just struck a stone wall.

That is when it hit you. “You pulled a monster with high armor in a party with only physical damage dealers!?”

“Ooooohhhh.” Your brother responds. “That was probably dumb, wasn't it?”

“Very dumb!” You shout.

“I actually have something to help!” Judi shouts. She holds a knife out and seems to concentrate on it. The blade glows and the Swashbuckler throws it. “Between the Scales!” The knife stabs into the tortoise’s neck for a lot of damage. At least, a lot comparing to the others.

After being blinded and taunted twice, the monster retracts into its shell and a dome forms around its shell. Then the beast pops back out.

“Swords of Cherubim!” Your mace bounces off of its hard shell, but the ability still takes effect, leaving a nice burn mark on the shell.

“Ah ha! Of course!” Vertigo shouts, “Time to unleash the millions of tiny hits, Takeshi!”

“Right!” The assassin replies.

The two unleash a torrent of tiny blows, each one doing insignificant damage, but your added damage certainly leaves a mark on the beast.

“Bleeds also ignore armor!” Judicature points out. “Serrated Blade!” Another tossed blade leaves a large gash in the face of the monster. Blood pours out of the thing like a fountain.

“Yar! I'll hit it with a dot too!” The Pirate pulls a sphere from his coat with a fuse popping out of its top. The second the end of the fuse touches the air, it sparks and begins to burn. Trove lobs the thing into the monster's face, lighting the tortoise on fire.

The monster lowers its jaw and stabs its mouth towards Vertigo. The jaw clamps shut like a guillotine on Vertigo, but the monk nimbly jumps out of the way.

“Holy shit!” Vertigo cries, “That was awesome!”

You'll need to end this with minimal expenditure of MP. You cast Divine Might, converting your healing power into physical damage. Your next hit is going to deal tons of damage, and just in time for its armor to wear off.

In the mean time your brother appears to be spamming Flurry of Blows over and over again. “ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA!” He shouts, hitting only two of his three attacks.

Takeshi continues to also spam, but his ability keeps increasing his attack speed, which has now gotten ridiculous, especially considering he's wielding a two handed sword! His arms move the blade with such speed that it is hard to keep track of it. He strikes with such a speed, you'd be certain this was some bad anime.

“Uhh... I don't know what else to do!” Judi shouts, “All of my attacks are physical!”

“Use [Sunder Armor]!” Vertigo commands. His inner raid-leader is starting to show.

“I don't have that!” The duelist responds.

“How do you not have that!?”

“It's terrible in PvP!”

“What!? I- God damn it, you're a <Morning Star>!” Your brother laments, “Okay, just do anything that has a lot of hits!”

She flings a hand full of daggers into the air. “Rain of Blades!” The blades come falling down onto the tortoise, dealing a small amount of damage each tick inside the ring of falling blades.

Trove once more pulls his set of small cannons from his coat and fires them into the monster. It does not seem to care much for the Brew's assault.

The monster begins to stomp its feet, shards of stone begins to shoot out of the ground, stabbing into everyone. Not even your brother can dodge all the blows.

The blind falls from the monster, but so does its armor buff. It is much lower thanks to Takeshi's barrage, but the Assassin is almost completely out of MP now.

God damn it, Takeshi.

You smash your mace into the monster, the boost of strength and the bonus damage deals serious damage to the monster. You can still see a sliver of health left, and you certainly hope that the remaining blows are enough to knock it low.

Your brother continues to pummel the beast along with Takeshi until the Swords of Cherubim finally runs out. The thing has less than a hundred health left! If only someone would just hit the damn thing!

“Between the Scales!” Judicature shouts flinging a blade into the monster's neck. The monster sways left and right, falls to the ground with a loud crash, and then disappears into bubbles.

200 gold, a health potion, tortoise meat, a tortoise shell, and one intestine drops.

Takeshi drops to his knees, panting. “I can't stand!” He shouts, “I'm too tired!” He falls to the ground, “I can't go on.” You notice that he has 0 MP left, although it begins to tick up slowly.

You too are beginning to feel a little tired. Perhaps it would be a good idea to rest just a bit. You look at the XP bar in your status screen. You are quite literally one fight away from another level up. Perhaps one more fight wouldn't be so bad...

“Only one intestine!?” Your brother shouts, “But he was so huge! It should have, like a million stacks of that stuff!”

“Yeah.” You take a seat on the earth. “If only there was a way that we could actually harvest it for the things inside of it, but it turns into nothing when it dies.”

“Yeah.” Your brother responds, “I mean, what are we supposed to do, cut it up for mats while it's still alive?”

You and your brother share an uneasy look of realization. Cut out its intestines while its still alive? That's a bit extreme, isn't it? You're not sure if you could do something like that.

“Let's rest.” You say, beckoning your brother and everyone else to sit down.

Your brother takes a seat to your left and Judi to your right.

“Harvesting from the living.” Your brother says.

“That IS kinda messed up.” You respond.

“Yeah, but, I mean, they're just animals.” He responds, “They're not even real animals! They're mobs in an MMO!”

Judicature butts into the conversation. “Would you consider Landers not real people, just NPCs in an MMO?”

Zachery sighs. “I suppose so, but... But even then, they're just animals! It's not our fault the system was made this way! We're just reacting to how things are, not how we want them to be! They're hostile monsters anyways! That's like, being evil in my book!”

“But cutting something up like that while it's still alive...” Judi remarks.

“Something evil!” Your brother stands to emphasize his point. “These things aren't some innocent little rabbit, they're monsters that will kill anything that comes its way! They're practically pests!”

“Just because things will be easier that way doesn't mean we should do it!” The duelist also stands, “You wouldn't go killing Landers just because things would be easier that way!”

“These aren't Landers! Stop making that comparison! They're evil monsters that want to kill us at all cost!”

“They only want to kill you if you go into their territory! Tons of animals in the real world act like that!”

“Yeah! And you know what!? We treated them like shit when we had to, because at the end of the day they're animals and we're humans! We're more important than them every day of the God damn week!”

“That's true, but... But that doesn't make it right!”

“You're right. That doesn't make it right. But it being wrong doesn't mean we shouldn't do it either!”

“Yes it does!” Judicature protests. “If it's wrong, it's wrong! Pure and simple!”
>>
>>40008853
“What other choice do we have!? Slave away for days on end getting a single piece of intestine every fight, fighting more and more monster every day because everyone and their grandmother wants a steak, but no one is ever willing to actually go out and harvest the damn things!?” What? What the hell is he going on about? “Because that shit just causes the prices to keep rising, which makes people more and more desperate! Then one day you heard about Lander villages getting sacked because people are that desperate for money now that they stopped caring about NPCs being alive! So, no! If the choice is between giving some monster the worst day possible or getting more people killed, I'll take being an asshole to monsters any day!”

Judi takes a step back.

“If this is the way to harvest more food per monster, if this works, it's fucking worth it, no matter what it is!”

“Zachery.” You say.

“WHAT!?” He shouts, practically frothing at the mouth.

“Calm down.” You respond.

He breathes in deeply, and then lets out a long sigh. “I'm sorry.” He looks to Judi. “Sorry for being angry.”

“It's okay.” She responds without looking at Zachery.

You sigh as well. That conversation went south fast. First it's how can we get more materials to make an airship and now it's suddenly the way to save the world. Your brother is the absolute worst some times. You look up at the brilliant blue of the midday sky.

Torture animals or people will die? What kind of paladin morality trap is this!?

I do not want this to be a thing. If we come to rely on torturing of living creatures to meet our material needs there will be hell to pay for it later on. At BEST the production of aircraft will be frozen while we scramble to find another method and I don't want to think about the worst. “What does everyone else think?” You ask, looking back to the group.

“Yar! I be a messy job,” Trove responds, “But somebody gotta do it.”

“I'm not a vegetarian.” Takeshi responds.

“That... That wasn't the question, Takeshi.” You reply.

“Wasn't it?” He says.

“No. No it wasn't.” You say.

“Fine. No, I don't mind. They're just animals! We were killing them for materials in the first place, how is this any different?”

“Cutting something that's still alive open is a bit... different.”

“I still don't care. Monster are monsters. They'd do the same to us if they could.”

You shrug. He has a good point. You sigh. Maybe Lilac has something to add to this.

You call the purple dwarf.

“Did you get it all already!?” She answers.

“No, no.” You respond, “We are currently have a bit of conundrum.”

“Oh?” Lilac responds, “Well, I still haven't slept, so I don't know how well I will be, but I do know that my math is mostly accurate! I have weighed... So many things! Huh. I wonder how much the bed weighs. Can the bed even fit in the bag?”

“Lilac, pay attention.”

“Sorry. What was the question?”

“Well, we think we may be able to harvest more resources from monsters, but to do that we'd need to do it while it was still alive.”

“Like... take out their organs?”

“Yeah.”

“Does that mean we have organs? I never really thought about it that way. Do the organs even work?”

“I... don't know?”

“Yet.”

“Well, I was going to ask if, you know, it's right to do that kind of thing.”

“Hm? Oh, yeah, biologists do that sort of thing all the time. Medical science is built upon animal cruelty; although, I don't think the biologists would appreciate it being called that.”

“Yeah, but this isn't going to remain research if it works, it's going to be the staple of how we get resources.”
>>
>>40010125
“Tomato tomahto.” She pauses, “Also, the answer is, no, you cannot fit a bed into a bag, but that's only because the mouth of the bag is too small...”

“Uhuh...”

“Was my max MP always this low?”

“Lilac, I think you need to get some sleep.”

“But there are so many things left to weigh!”

“And you can weigh them when you wake up.”

“I'll sleep when I'm tired! Now back to the question you asked! Uh... What was it again?”

“You already answered it.”

“Oh.”

“Go to sleep.” You hang up.

You sigh once more. Look like everyone but Judi thinks you should do this.

You suppose there is no time like the present.

You clap your hands together and announce, “We're doing it! We should at least see if it works! For science!”

“Thank you!” Your brother responds. “Now, the real question is how we are going to do it?”

“I suppose the best bet would be to flip it over, hold it down, cut it open, and then start... pulling things out.”

Judi retches at the last phrase. You pretend like you didn't see it.

“We'll probably need to be much stronger than the monster to hold it down. Zachery, stop mentoring. That strength alone is probably enough to keep the thing in place.”

With a nod your brother returns to max level, his HP and MP skyrocketing to his normal raid-tier level.

You take a moment to glance around. Everyone is fully rested now. “Alright, let's move out.” You get up and walk off in search of one of the giant turtles. You glance behind you to see everyone is following you, Judi included. You're not sure if she changed her mind or doesn't know what else to do.

“There's one!” Your brother happily shouts, “I'mma pull it!”
>>
>>40010132
“Don't.” You respond, “You're max level, remember? Even your weakest attacks could kill it. Just run over and hold it down.”

“Gotcha!” Your brother charges forward, arms outstretched. “I'm gonna suplex your bunk ass!” The monk grabs hold of the monster's shell and lifts it into the air with relative ease. Raid-tier power sure is scary in this world. He drops the creature on his back behind him, then walks around the beast, arms outstretched like a pro wrestler asking for applause. He gets none.

“Just hold it down!” You shouts at him.

Your brother quickly stops fooling around and grabs hold of the monster once again.

You sigh. “Takeshi, cut it open.”

“Why me!?” He responds.

“Because katanas are the sharpest, right?” You don't believe that, but you believe he believes that.

The assassin sighs before unsheathing his sword. “EXECUTE!” He slams the blade into the underbelly of the monster. It bounces off of the monster as if Takeshi struck the shell itself. The Chef turns to look at you, quite concerned.

You ponder for a minute then ask, “Animal parts are used for cooking, right?”

“Cooking and alchemy,” You brother informs you, “But mostly cooking, yeah.”

“Takeshi,” You command, “Use a cooking knife instead of your katana.”

“But katanas are sharper than cooking knives!”

“Just try it!” You bark your orders.

The weeaboo retrieves the knife from his bag and stabs it into the monster. It cuts through it like butter, but strangely the creature takes no damage.

Takeshi pulls the knife back and the creature begins to flail, crying out in what you assume is agony.

You hear Judi behind you. “I can't watch.”

You don't want to watch either, but you feel you have to. This was your doing, after all.
>>
>>40010145
Takeshi begins to pull the underbelly plates back. He looks quite unnerved by what he sees and looks to you for orders. Your brother seems to be avoiding to look at it as well now.

This is your responsibility.

You walk over to the scene. The monster still cries, but that is not what unnerves you, it is the twitching of the organs that you can see. You can see the monster's pulse. That strange feeling, that knowledge that this thing is alive in some sense. You can see its heart beating right before your eyes.

You reach in and pull on some long organ you assume is the intestines. You can feel the warmth of its blood and the pulse through its veins. You pull the flesh out one handful at a time. It begins to feel like some sick magician scarf trick at one point. When you can pull out no more you look to Takeshi.

“Cut it.” You order.

The ex-samurai severs the organ and the pulse suddenly ends. You take the coils of intestine and stuff it into your bag. “So it works.” You say to yourself.

“Cut off a leg!” Your brother says, “We still don't know if you can harvest meat!”

You look up to the monster. Despite all that you have done to it, it still hasn't taken any damage.

“Do it.” You tell Takeshi.

Another slice of the cutting knife and a leg falls off. You can see the bone and meat. It seems to have worked.

“Cut up the rest of him.” You command. You go about placing everything that Takeshi has cut off into your bag. Throughout the entire process the thing does not shut up. It continues to whine and bellow and cry. When the task is done the monster still lives, despite no organs and no muscles, the creature still technically has HP, and continues to cry out. These damn monsters never die when they should.

“Punch it, Zachery.” You say, “Just one-shot the damn thing.”
>>
>>40010156
Your brother hits it and the sounds finally stop. What remained of the monster disappears into bubbles and a small pile of gold and items remains. You decide not to pick them up. Perhaps this has been enough gathering for today.

“Well, looks like you got what you wanted, Zachery.” Your brother does not respond.

You leave the party and walk back towards Pueblo in silence.

You glance behind you to see Judicature following you.

“I wish there was another way.” You state.

“I know.” She responds.

mmmm, turtle.

But from a tactical perspective, cooking let's you kill things like a boss.
>Amputate all limbs
>Use regular skills at your leisure.

If we want to do this humanely, there's a relatively simple way.
>find small rabbit-sized mob
>cut in half with kitchen knife
>while removing organs from lower half, kill upper half.
done, not any more harm than we're already causing them by killing them.
>>
>>40010297
>>cut in half with kitchen knife
>>Won't instantly kill it
If that would work I can honestly say I don't get the mechanics of this system at all. I think the most humane way of going about this is stunning the beast or even inducing brain death in it before cutting it up. IRL slaughterhouses use a similar technique by using a bolt gun (that thing with the gas tank in No Country for Old Men) to basically instantly lobotomize cows before killing them.
>>

Always another great session. However, we actually see something about this in the LN/Anime.

If a beast is captured and a chef is brought about, you can harvest a great deal more organs/meat from them, apparently able to do it by killing them and THEN harvesting. So Takeshi needs to start dual wielding a cleaver and kitchen knife, obviously. Though if the way Shep writes it is the way the folks in LH deal with it, they probably just give no fucks. Still interesting to see!

>>40010380

Well, normally creatures would wake up from taking damage while under a sleep spell, but due to the fact that butchering an animal technically doesn't damage them, a sleep spell would work.

>>40010406
>[Lilac being best girl intensifies]
Indeed.

>If a beast is captured and a chef is brought about, you can harvest a great deal more organs/meat from them, apparently able to do it by killing them and THEN harvesting.
Damn. I couldn't remember how it was in the LN and baka-tsuki's translation was removed due to licensing. I actually found the episode of the anime and it was translated as "If you catch them alive, you can use the whole thing" and the "use the whole thing" made me wonder if there was actual butchery involved. I don't remember anyone actually going into it in either the LN or the show, but now that I think about it, I get the feeling that was a mechanic of the chef subclass rather than an overskill and my reading comprehension is, as always, absolute shit.

Also...

Anyone else up for some late night post-quest tech discussion/waifu shitposting? That's how we came up with the airship idea, if I recall.

>>40011509
I still say that we should find out if there's anyone to got databased who is has a degenerative disease, and if so, are the still afflicted with it.
>>
>>40011529
You do realize it's design is absurdly simple when it comes down to it, right? I mean, all you really need is enough air pressure to blow the bolt forward with enough force, and that isn't a lot. This isn't even counting all the ways you could do the same thing with magic if you wanted to.
>>
>>40011555
Simple for people who can actually make tools in the game. Who is going to buy or craft one of these when they outright can replicate it with innate magical abilities or get used to killing the animal like we do in RL?
>>
>>40011509
We can just cut to the root of the problem: remove brain with kitchen knife, no more suffering, no effect to HP.
>>
>>40011582
>>40011602
The question is whether these methods would succeed in forcing the animal into a state of unconsciousness without actually killing it. If we straight up decapitated it with a kitchen knife its organs would be incapable of functioning and immediately die, no matter how much HP it had. If magic and status effects could accomplish that, then great, we can use that. All I'm saying is that in the event that doesn't work we can always use the same technology actually used in real slaughterhouses, as it would do exactly what we want here very efficiently.
>>
>>40011713
That presumes we actually know about how slaughterhouses work. Not exactly common knowlege
. Everyone has superhuman strength. We can punch harder than any mechanical device would do. If we can't stun them like that already the bolt action pistols aren't going to do anything.
>>
>>40011713
>decapitate
who said anything about that? Just remove the brain, some kitchen knives are suited to that.

And whether or not you do such a thing, brain death still has a minute or two before the rest of the body follows.

Nothing wrong with stun/sleep effects, but we should cover all bases since we don't want to base all our skill points on humanely killing animals.
>>
>>40011761
I mean, there would be involuntary twitching of the muscles, but I don't think we're going to find acupuncture experts just anywhere to solve that problem.
>>
>>40011761

Maybe there's a way to kill a monster without having its corpse disappear? If there are skinners in this game, they might have to do some sorta harvesting move on corpses to get their materials. Maybe if a skinner/leather worker lands the finishing blow or is grouped with the party that gets kill credit for a monster, they might be able to trigger the corpse to persist long enough for a chef to harvest it for materials.

While I'm not sure if I agreed with the previous vote, I think we can all agree that doing live vivisections on monsters isn't something that should become routine in the world.
>>
>>40011909
again, nothing wrong with vivisections, but for god sakes, get some sedatives.

Or, if we can't just use moral relativism with frog dissection, I'd vote that cutting them open should be ok if they are already sedated and you don't pull anything out. Otherwise, humane methods of "killing" are advised.
>>
>>40011966
Yeah, it's just kinda creepy though. Although agribusiness IRL for animal meat is pretty gruesome in general. Let's hope that Log Horizon has some long duration PvE CC effects that can be stacked off cool down. Not everyone has access to sedatives or specialized equipment.
>>
>>40011761
I was using decapitation in the medical sense of the word, which is used to describe any injury where the connection of the brain and spinal chord to the rest of the body is severed. Removing the brain entirely from the subjects skull will do that.

And correct me if I'm wrong but full brain death will result in total death, as the brain is crucial to managing the function of all other organs. Once the neurons stop firing, the heart stops beating, the lungs stop breathing, the creature in question goes stone cold dead. Which wouldn't be that big of a problem if they didn't dissolve here when it happens.

The trick is somehow rendering the beast unconscious without inducing brain death.

Why not?

Do you not wish to become the most feared man in the eyes of the monsters?

Do you not wish to be their figure of horror and despair?

Do you not wish to be the incarnation of their fears?

Do you not wish your name to by synonymous with horrific death?

>Once the neurons stop firing, the heart stops beating, the lungs stop breathing,
neurons still fire for a while after you disconnect the brain, see headless chickens.

Even without a supply of blood, the organs still live for a minute or two, otherwise cardiac arrest instantly kills and defibrillators are useless. At worst, we have enough time to gruesomely get 1 organ. Either way, we need to find out if that is actually the case, and when the system considers a thing "dead".

So, if one were to cut off the front half of the skull, and the brain within, would that not solve the problem?

I mean, it might feel pain still, but not in a capacity that we would deem disturbing as it would lack the ability to externalize its pain.

On a more serious note, that mage NPC who became an adventurer is pretty ripe research material.

Revival magic restored his HP, but did not revive him. It slowly depleted while he was still dead, right? Is that the measuring stick you'll use?
>>
Hmm, hmm.

Paralysis and numbing agents for humane ways to harvest, as the system consider the harvested still alive even when its internal organs and muscles are all gone.

Also, Zachery went nuts about the cruel harvesting because of his own traumatic experience in Big Apple.

Huh, that's a thought. Since price is rising in Big Apple, but material drops are still not enough, if this technique is told to King's Guild, would it help with the unrest there?
>>
>>40012652
Rundelhaus? Yeah, his death is the only one that's explained in depth, so it's really the ONLY measuring stick we have.

In some sense, without the conscious mind (ie the soul) essence loss happens (Which is to say, the creature despawns).

In that same sense, when the body dies (Hp reaches 0), the soul is then disconnected from the body, causing essence loss to happen again.

Strangely, 0 MP is unconsciousness, but not death.

There are so many unanswered questions.

>Also, Zachery went nuts about the cruel harvesting because of his own traumatic experience in Big Apple.
That is correct.
>if this technique is told to King's Guild, would it help with the unrest there?
It is possible.

Capture probably works by converting the monster into an inventory item called "Captured Boar" or whatnot. After that, killing it probably converts it into a seperate item called "Boar Corpse". You can then freely dismantle the latter item without it despawning until you've removed all its various bits.

Since you can probably one-shot a captive monster by default, this is obviously a much more humane method than vivisection.

That is most likely how it was intended to be interpreted, but I couldn't find anything on how it worked specifically, other than that it does.

I'm just going to go with vivisection for now.

It's more fun seeing people trying to figure out ways to pull it off in a humane manner than it would be to just go "Poof! You's a pile of meat!"

Not to mention I thought of a speech Ambrosis could give should he ever need to absolutely intimidate someone.

Not sure if he'll ever use it, but it's nice to know it's there.
>>

Well, I suppose "catch and release" is an option. Sedate, harvest, zap with a healing spell, repeat. Or just sedate, harvest and release, if HP regenerates when not in combat.
>>
>>40013937
That is a good point.

In some of the comics, it's shown dismemberment to be a thing, and that normal healing spells to regenerate lost limbs.

It could theoretically work here as well, but is healing monsters possible?

Anyone remember an instance of someone healing a monster by accident? Feel like that would be something scrub party would have done if it was possible.
>>
>>40013981
Scrub party isn't that stupid. Since it's not a game anymore, though, it should be possible to target a monster with a healing spell. Heck, it's probably the standard way to kill undead monsters.
>>
>>40014265
Oh, I'm not saying they're stupid, just that if any group was going to make that mistake, it was going to be scrub party.

As for the undead I don't think undead work that way in Elder Tales. They have weakness against holy, but I can't find anything that says they would be damaged by healing.

I could be wrong, though.
>>
>>40014407
Scrub party is the best part. They're all just so...interesting.

Also, I'm pretty sure that adventurers with the Vampire subclass are harmed by healing spells.
>>
>>40013981
>stun monster, cut nerves to prevent pain and thrashing, cover its head with cloth
>quickly butcher all useful parts
>heal injuries, stun again, run out of aggro leash radius if you need to leave
>repeat until you run out of MP or have all needed materials

If healing organ loss isn't that draining, it could be possible to supply a whole lotta meat with just 1 creature. Might even be possible to achieve a post scarcity society if you have enough workers doing this.
>>
>>40014502
>I'm pretty sure that adventurers with the Vampire subclass are harmed by healing spells.
That is absolutely true, however I do not think the effects of the subclass technically counts as the properties of the undead monster type.

>Scrub party is the best part. They're all just so...interesting.
What about them do you find interesting?
Just curious is all.
>>
>>40014565
> Might even be possible to achieve a post scarcity society if you have enough workers doing this.

Yes, that's right anon.

You don't need to do anything but continuously vivisect one monster.

Over, and over, and over again.

Forget the other anons and their petty morality, you know the way forward requires sacrifice.

You and that one monster will both be a modern Prometheus.

Just in different senses of the name.
>>
>>40014851
Yeah, I thought that shit might result in mass vivisection farms or facilities. If one party can make a while buncha materials and profit off of it, then someone will make a huge corporation around it.

If the crisis is based on tasty food, it might be possible to trick the system by having people use specific devices to season foods. Kinda like a mass assembly thing but for easy to create foods.

North American Server: Hell on Earth for Monsters, brought to you by Glorious America.

So, like an assembly line, but for cooking food, or seasoning that can taste like anything?
>>
>>40015271

Kinda. I mean, if players are able to easily craft tasteless food for skill ups, it might be possible to have enough dudes who can season stuff or prep materials. You might not be mass producing food at a modern capacity unless you can create new devices or use magic to compensate, but it might not be too hard to make a mass bread production facility or something. Or a hot dog food truck thingy.

I'm imagining something like a pizza place where each person does only one thing.

Like you're telling the system:
"I'm not making a pizza! I'm just stretching out some dough!"

"I'm not making a pizza! I'm just putting some sauce into some dough!"

"I'm not making a pizza! I'm just sprinkling some cheese around!"

"I'm not making a pizza! I'm just putting this random object onto a conveyor belt that feeds through an oven!"

"Oh look! A pizza! How strange that all those random events could cause something like that to happen!"
>>
>>40015501
You never know until you try! Lilac did actual building devices up until the part where the system recognized her combined object as an engineering type device.

Whelp, I think I'm finally ready to go to sleep.

Don't ask me why I haven't slept yet, I haven't the slightest idea.

What I do know, however, is this:
"max MP" is mentioned exactly twice (now three times) in this thread.
>>
>>40016161
I noticed Lilac mentioned her max MP going down, but I figured that might be because she'd been awake for several days.
>>
>>40016180
Oh. Oh no. It's the tumor, isn't it?
>>
>>40016202
Oh god. We can delay it with some MP restoring potions then, right?
>>
>>40016180
>>40016202

Shit, we gotta write this shit down. See what affects max MP and stuff.
>>
>>40016227

Her max MP is decreasing. MP restoration items are probably of no use, since they only affect current MP.
>>
>>40016202
or Shep is messing around with us. Right?

right?
>>
>>40016258
See Shep's post here>>40012435

Max MP and overall MP levels are determined by the strength of consciousness and the structural integrity of the brain itself. The fact that her levels are dropping could mean that something is physically harming her brain. You're probably right about MP restoring potions being ineffective though, maybe there is a way we can buff her MP cap somehow?
>>
>>40016202
It really shouldn't be, since the only thing carried over from their IRL bodies was their faces, and that with such alterations as necessary to fit their new race. The cancerous cells should have been left behind with the rest of her body.
>>
>>40016604
Maybe she just has really bad luck and managed to get cancer twice completely independently?
>>
i don't recall if we tried casting cure on her yet, or if we just need to dump a couple of skill points into it (we still have some of those right?)
>>
>>40016520

Grinding levels raises max MP.

It could also mean that exhaustion is a thing here, mentally or otherwise. Staying up for too many days in a row severely impairs one's mental faculties, and you will eventually won't be able to do anything but pass out if you keep at it.

There's also a lot of other negative health factors attributed to lack of sleep. Humans and lots of other creatures need REM sleep to function, but nobody is quite sure why.
>>
>>40016604
Indeed, but what happened to the bodies they left behind in the real world? Are the players still alive and simply have their consciousnesses projected into the database, unable to jack out? So many questions, so few ways of answering them.
>>
>>40017105
Personally, I like the theory that they were consumed to power the World Fraction spell that brought the adventurers' souls to Theldesia.
