Ask Languid Anything: ask.fm/HellbornQM

You’ve been able to do weird things all your life, but only in the past year have you started to understand why. Your name is Sierra Beckhoff, and you are a hellborn – part mortal, part demon. Ever since you ran into a family of demon hunters, a lot of weird (but cool) stuff has gone down. You’ve battled rogue generals, joined the a baron’s conclave of demonic advisors, and dueled landmasters. You maybe even met a real live dragon – though you’re not a hundred percent on that one. But perhaps most surprisingly, you successfully graduated high school.

Before you can pile in a car and ride into the sunset on your pan-America roadtrip, though, you’ve got a couple loose ends to tie up. Ushologuissa, a Stygian countess (and Grand Wyrmwrither), has nabbed a foreign hell VIP dude from your fief, with the aid of Hassatur the fish king. Or something like that, anyway.

It’s up to you, your demon boyfriend Wolfgang, and Ulam’uberatu – a wyrmling cleric of Belititus – to pull off a super tactical rescue mission.

--

You weigh your blood-charmed compass in hand, still intrigued by how you can actually do fancy magic that’s actually useful. Like, as in, more useful than lighting up your room so you can read at night without flipping the light switch. or learning to read braille.

But now is not the time to get lost in how much cool stuff you can do. The guys are all yakking on about cars and whatever, whose you should take. They are all wrong, though. “Guys,” you say. “No cars. This is supposed to be incognito and stuff. If somebody gets one of your license plates, Axos or whoever’ll know who did this pretty quick.”
>>
>>40021796

Ulam’uberatu turns disjointedly to face you, plainly uncomfortable squeezed into his human-formed glamor. “Can these license plates be removed?” he asks.

“No,” you say flatly. “At least while we’re in the city. You’d get pulled over pretty quick. I think.”

“We don’t need them gone,” says Wolfgang, folding his arms, “but it’d be nice to have different ones.”

There’s an idea. “I guess we could take the cars if you wiggle your fingers and make sure nobody can tell whose car it is,” you say.

Ulam nods stiffly. “It is a trifling matter,” he says.

Well, that worked out nice. “Cool,” you say. “So. Maybe we can take both cars, convoy over there. We get Lucifer to Ulam’s armored presidential SUV thing and get out. And if things go south...”

“We’ll make a getaway with my car,” Wolfgang says, finishing the idea. “It’s a plan.”

Harvey nods solemnly. “If you succeed to plan, you plan to succeed,” he says, meaningfully.

“I don’t remember inviting you to rescue the president,” you reply. You snap and point toward the house.

Your fake brother hangs his head, and goes back inside through the sliding glass door.

Wolfgang raises an eyebrow. “The president?”

“Yeah, you know,” you say, waving your hand vaguely.

“Sakheris is referring to the emissary, without question,” Ulam explains. “Let us depart, for his sake.”

It doesn’t even take a minute for Ulam to fix up the license plates so they read completely different than before.

“Looks good,” says Wolfgang. “Even the lighting is right on the dot.”

“Imagine how many parking violations you could get away with,” you say. You reach to touch the plates of Wolfgang’s car out of curiosity, and find the original digits under your fingertips.

“A deception of sight, not touch,” says Ulam, jingling his keys out of a pocket. The demon is a pretty good driver, for somebody who started learning just a few months ago.

“How long will it last?” you ask.
>>
>>40021813

“A sufficient span of time – three or four hours,” the demon replies. “I would expect the greater concern to be extracting Lucifer from Axos’s care, without inflicting undue harm.”

You’re not sure if he means harm to Lucifer, Axos, or everything between the two. It sucks you can’t just use Wolfgang’s space magic to teleport in and out, Hayden Christensen Jumper style. But now that you’re thinking about it, you glance over at Wolf, trying to be nonchalant. “So...”

“No,” he says. “That’s not how it works.”

“Can you at least teleport us out, when we find him?” you ask.

Wolfgang scratches his chin. “I could teleport one of you out,” he says. “But I’d rather we all walk out together.”

“But if we need to, I just get you to the prime minister, and wham, you’re in the clear?”

“Wham, we’re in the clear,” he agrees. But he shakes his head. “I’d rather not use that option. It’s no use getting out if somebody gets hurt because I’m not around,” he says. “I can help out more if I’m nearby.”

“What about teleporting us in, once we know where it is?” you ask.

“I can go through a wall. That doesn’t help us know where they have Lucifer,” he says.

“This is all just guesswork anyway,” you say. “Plans aren’t going to work until we know what kind of situation we’re looking at. Oh, by the way.” You reach into your duffel bag and pull out a gun. You hand it to Wolfgang, handle first. “You ever use one of these before?” you ask jokingly.
>>
>>40021837

He takes the gun and examines it. “I remember someone laughing at me when I was working on my aim,” he says in a thoughtful tone.

“Ah, to scorn and to be scorned by your beloved,” says Ulam. “Such exuberances take me to a time when I, too, sought the embrace of such affection.”

You snort. “Well, it’s good you didn’t, cause I kind of like you better with your head still on your shoulders,” you say.

Ulam goes into a contemplative mood. “To fulfill oneself in brood is a settled end,” he says, “though there are other means for the unsettled ones, through the one who bears no taint.”

>Sounds like you’re on one of those premium plans.
>Well, whatever floats your boat, I guess.

So, I was thinking. What if we took that obsidian jewelry and carved some blood magic inscriptions into them (it'd be really easy, just SoS a toothpick) and set it up so that we can charge them for casting by just letting blood run through the pattern. It'd be a lot less prep than doing full carvings into our flesh every time and if we do them well enough then they'd probably grant a bonus or something, and it'd be less stress/hp penalty to use (not that it's very high now, but still). Also red magic patterns on red glass looks pretty cool.
>>
>>40022355
Well, that's assuming that the flesh bit of the inscriptions aren't vital to them working.
I wouldn't place any bets that it works, but we could try it out with something a little less valuable like a piece of wood or leather scrap.
Or maybe start with trying it on a newly hunted deer, see if we can fuel blood magic with the blood of other creatures or if we have to draw on our own blood.

FUCK YEAH HELLBORN QUEST!
>>
“Yeah, nothing beats kicking ass and saving the day and stuff,” you say. “But hey. I’m sure there’s a nice, shark-sized girl out there who’s just waiting to meet the one. Or the next one.”

Ulam gives a deep chuckle. “If so, I believe her efforts would be better spent elsewhere,” he says. “I am a cleric of Belititus, and shall continue as such for a very long time.”

“Well, I guess you’ll have to content yourself with being the hero,” you say.

“You have a talent with words,” Ulam says, maybe even seriously.

You snort, and jerk your head to Wolfgang, toward the car. “Let’s ride.”

--

Tracking by blood is fairly simple. Technically you could hand over the compass to Wolfgang and have him follow the arrow, but you like barking out commands, so you keep it to yourself and focus on shouting stuff like ‘turn here’ or ‘I meant turn the other way’.

You find the place you’re looking for. Or at least you’re pretty certain it’s the place. The compass points unfailingly toward a decrepit cluster of apartment buildings, with a basketball court and stuff on the side. A group of unfriendly looking guys hang out on the front doorstep, s, some with clothes so baggy they’re practically swimming in them, some electing to go without shirts at all due to the head. How the hell don’t they get burned?

You recognize the general look . They’re probably with some gang, but if they are, they’re not making it obvious who they’re with. Maybe it’s their own little thing? You wonder if they’re associated with Axos’s ‘strong herbs’ or whatever. Probably are.

“This is the place,” you say, tapping on the window.

“All right,” says Wolfgang. “How do you want to handle this?”

>The compass has a pretty dead on read. We’ll go around the side, cut through walls, whatever, get in, get out. Done.
>Let’s park somewhere far away, walk around a couple times, get a feel for what we’re up against.

You consider your options. You could spend a couple minutes canvassing the place, seeing what’s up exactly, or you could just corner step cut through the whole thing and try to get this over with as soon as possible. In and out before anybody knows Old Nick’s missing.

“I have a pretty good read with the compass,” you say, turning it sideways to figure out which floor your Mardusian emissary’s on. Looks like he’s on one of the upper floors, though you can’t tell if it’s a lower one closer to you, or a higher one further away. “Let’s park someplace, head around the side, and make a beeline for the man of the hour.”

“How often does Waldric ask for you to do things like this?” Wolfgang asks, knitting his eyebrows together.

You snort. “I don’t let him ask, I just do it mostly,” you say. “Gotta be proactive and crap, or you’ll just get left on the sidelines while he’s weaving all his secret secrets. You know, kind of like your dad.”

“There’s more to my father than that,” he replies, driving on to find a good place to park.

You find a good spot and climb out. Ulam’uberatu is already waiting for you outside, which is weird, because it’s pretty hard to find parking around here, and you didn’t even call him or anything to let him know what the plan was.

Ulam leans forward a little to look at you. “I recognize three of the children on the front porch,” he says, glancing backward or turning his head. His neck seems to bulge out of its collar. “They are kin of Axos, fellows of his brood.”

“Lucky we don’t have to use the front door,” you say, smirking. “The compass has a pretty solid bead on Lucy. We’ll just bust in and grab him, wall through wall.”

Ulam presses his lips more firmly together. “Then I will stay here, and ensure a clear path of flight,” he says.

“Cool,” you say. “Let’s do it.”
>>
>>40025426

“Hold on a second,” says Wolfgang. Heg goes over and pops open his trunk, reaching in for his magic things. As for you, you’ve already got your sword and everything ready to go. You’re ready to get this show on the road. While you’re waiting, you notice a Harley Davidson parked across the street. It is a motorcycle you’ve seen before.

You automatically search your surroundings, and immediately see her. She doesn’t blend in at all with her ragged jeans, slightly singed tank-top, and serious scowl. Short-shorn iron grey hair, hooked nose, square shoulders, and carrying a backpack almost ripping apart at the seams, it’s Sattler, Isaac’s step cousin. Or was it step half-cousin?

Anyway, she’s heading in the same direction you’re hoping to go, but she’s on the other side of the street. Doesn’t look like she’s seen you yet.

>Duck down so she doesn’t see you.
>Make Ulam illusion you to look like somebody else.
>Go over and say hello. You don’t want to look evasive if she sees you anyway.

>>
You bite down on the instinct to hide. Sattler is pretty touchy. She’ll notice if you do anything out of the ordinary. And though you’ve blended into the background thus far, you don’t think you’ll make it much longer.

Wolfgang slams the trunk shut, a tall staff of grayish wood in hand. He steps up onto the curb, ready to go, somehow making the staff a natural accessory to his high-class outfit. “What is it?” he asks, turning to follow your gaze.

“Don’t look,” you say. “It’s an angel. Sattler.”

Ulam freezes in place, perhaps realizing he doesn’t fit in quite as naturally as you or Wolfgang.

“Did she see you?” Wolfgang asks, leaning casually against a parking meter. Beneath his skin, though, you can sense his muscles tensing.

“I’m not waiting for her to see me,” you say. “You guys get out of here, I’ll go distract her.”

“We can leave, right now,” Wolfgang says.

But you’re already walking toward her. You don’t want her to see either Wolf or Ulam and start asking questions. If it’s just you, maybe you can figure something out. But you’re not that good with making up stories, not by a longshot. You hope she doesn’t ask the wrong questions. (+5 Stress: 37)

You head across the road, and Sattler glances over to you, stopping in place and casting down her cigarette. She crushes it under her boot, grinding the ash into the sidewalk. Her knuckles go white as she clenches the backpack harder in her off hand.
>>
>>40026340

While she still bears all the same scars since last time, one of her biceps is wrapped in a discolored bandage – you can almost make out the tinge of old blood underneath the outermost layer. Otherwise, you’re pretty sure she’s got all her weapons and stuff in her backpack by the way it moves – she makes it look light, but it has some inertia to it, probably her machetes and her suped-up Kris gun SMG thing.

The taste of tabacco smoke lingers in the air. The alluring flavor reminds you of stuff you’d rather not be reminded of right now. (+2 Stress: 39)

“What are you doing here?” Sattler asks, impatient, amused, and curious all at the same time. Her eyes flick down to your scabbard, and to your collarbone, where maybe a part of your bullet proof vest is sticking out from under your shirt.

You can feel yourself sweating a little bit. You are regretting your decision to confront Sattler instead of slipping away. This might be, in fact, one of your worse ideas in recent memory. But hey, Wolfgang and Ulam are probably out of harm’s way now. But now you’re in harm’s way, and Sattler knows something’s up. You’re not just going to waltz your way out of this one.

Keep your cool. You’re cool. (+4 Stress: 43)

“I’m uh. What are you doing here? I mean, like. Uh. I could ask you the same question,” you ask, you say, realizing that no matter how you stand, you are uncomfortable.

“Cut the shit. You and I both know there’s a whole hellhole full of demons right across the road,” says Sattler, her face taking on a kind of prideful, sadistic expression. “You know me. You know Isaac. Do the math. What are you doing here?”

Math is one of your weaker subjects. (+2 Stress: 45) But you’ve got this. You steady yourself and get a grip. Sattler doesn’t know anything, and she’s not going to know anything, ever. You have a good reason for being here, probably. You just have to lie through your teeth, and that’s no problem.
>>
>>40027266
Which would explain being evasive when Satt asked us about it.
>>

“I’m doing a job Isaac set up,” you say, rolling your shoulders to give your body something to do besides be nervous. “He thought he could use somebody less conspicuous than a World War 2 veteran with white hair.”

Sattler takes a second to grind down her cigarette even further. “You’re lying,” she says, giving you a vaguely disdainful look. You do not like the look of that look. (+3 Stress: 48) “I know about your control issues. Isaac trusts you about as far as he can throw you. What are you really doing here? You buy crack from these guys or what?”

>>
>>40027936
No, the main objective is to rescue Lucifer. Not giving it away that it was Waldo is like a condition or something
>>
It reflects pretty poorly on Waldric and his sponsors if demon hunters are slaughtering buildings full of demons in his city, even if they're criminals.

Even if we rescue him, I wonder if Lucifer won't be on board with standing back and letting Sattler kill them all.
>>
>>40028040
Wouldnt it be considered part of the risk? from the way I understand it, demons avoid being discovered rather than kill demon hunters
>>
>>40028040
That's like saying it reflects poorly on Waldric if an earthquake hits. Demon hunters are considered to be just a fact of living in America. They're all over the place and trying to get rid of them doesn't work.

“Okay, fine,” you say, putting some of your anger at being accused of not being able to control yourself into your words. Focusing on your anger makes what you’re saying feel real, because it kind of is, maybe. (+2 Stress: 50) “Just don’t tell Isaac, right? I just wanted to show him I’m... you know.”

Sattler lets out a harsh bark of laughter. “That’s adorable as fuck,” she says, smiling too wide.

You do not like being patronized by this woman. You tense up, and your arm and shoulder aches from where you inscribed all your spells. (+1 Stress: 51) “Give me an hour and then you whatever you fucking please,” you say.

“What are you going to do? Set the whole block on fire?” asks Sattler, her grin becoming sharp.

“Maybe, maybe not,” you say. “It’s my business.”

“Wrongo, kiddo, it’s my fucking business,” says Sattler, glaring at you. “You have no idea how dangerous these things are, what they’re capable of. They might wear human skins, but they’re nothing like you or me. These things are sin incarnate, got it? Evil made flesh. They live on suffering – their time here is paid for in mortal blood.”

“I know!” you shout, angrily. Her words rile you up in ways you didn’t know you could be riled up. You want her to stop talking, and to never say another word, ever. (+5 Stress: 56)

“Oh yeah?” Sattler laughs. “You know that half the things in there are Infernus crossbreeds? Your fire’s not going to do shit, stupid.”

“Shut up,” you say, your hands balling into fists. If there’s one thing you hate, it’s people saying you’re stupid. It takes great concentration to keep your hands normal, but as for the fire, well, you’re supposed to be a pyromancer, right? Flames bubble off from your shoulders, releaving some of the pressure building up within you. (+1 Stress: 57)
>>
>>40028121

Sattler starts laughing again. But suddenly, and wholly without warning, her expression relaxes a degree, the metallic glint in her eye softening. The laugh becomes less scathing, and more humored. “Look kid. Sierra, right? Sierra. No way you can handle half the shit in there alone, not without leveling the block.”

“I’ll leave,” you say, turning to go, angry you didn’t think about leaving sooner.

“No, I’m not letting you go anywhere,” says Sattler, iron in her voice. “You want to prove you’re not a failure, you’re halfway there. Come with me while I fuck these horns over. You do your fire whip thing or whatever the hell, I’ll drop a good word for you with Isaac.”

“You mean bust in there and kill everything?” you ask. This is your realm of expertise.

“Fuck yes. It’s happening now. You want this or not?”

You are intrigued despite yourself. The horns – the demons in there are the bad guys, after all. You’d be doing the world a favor. And it won’t look like Isaac or Waldric is involved if a third party, Sattler, Hunter & Company wrecks the place up. You guess you could say no, but that might make Sattler ask more questions, and you don’t know if you can handle that right now.

You have no choice. Not that this isn’t a good choice. It is certainly a choice, though. “I want in,” you say, a familiar excitement in your gut. Sneaking around and stuff is fine, but so is extreme violence.

“Great,” says Sattler. She squints at you. “You wearing something under the vest?” she asks, nodding at your shirt.

“Yeah?” you say.

“You’d better take one of these,” she says, setting her bag down and pulling out a convincing FBI sticker.

Understanding, you remove your outmost layer, leaving you with your tanktop and bullet proof vest. Sattler stashes the shirt in her bag, and slips an FBI hat on her head, and a chained cop badge around her neck, while you put the patch on your lightweight flak jacket.

A couple people walking by on the street give you curious glances, but nobody says anything.

“Might as well be invisible,” you say, snorting.

Sattler laughs, and starts buckling up with her machetes, one at each hip. “The right people know about this shit ahead of time. We’ve got a solid thirty minutes for this gig,” Sattler says, throwing her bag behind her shoulder once more. You catch a glimpse of her gun and a couple bricks of clay looking stuff with wires sticking out of them within.

You realize that this is going to get really violent. Like, the kind of violence Isaac was hoping to avoid by working with demons instead of blowing them up. You think about calling him to let him know what’s up. You then realize this is stupid, because you lied yourself into the corner that Isaac can’t know about what you’re doing here. This is the future you chose.

But you can let Wolf know what the hell’s going on. He can still get inside with Ulam, and maybe get to Lucifer before you do. It might be dangerous, but Wolfgang can fucking teleport, and you know Ulam can do a lot more than he’s ever let on. They should be good. And you’re pretty sure Sattler will be loud enough that they won’t wonder where she is at any point.
>>
>>40028839

You slip your hand into your pocket and key in a false ring on your phone. A couple seconds later, your phone goes off, and you pretend to answer it. “Crap. I gotta take this,” you say, stepping off from Sattler.

Sattler scowls and lights up another cigarette in the mean time.

Except instead of answering your phone, you call Wolfgang.

“What’s up?” he says nonchalantly. It would fool you, except you know he should be worried about you, and would normally ask you if you were okay or whatever. He must be watching what’s going on. It’s pretty cool he didn’t just ditch out, even though you pretty much told him to. Kind of a nice feeling, somehow. (-3 Stress: 54)

“I told you I’m busy,” you say heatedly. “Just grab Luke and go to the movies without me, all right? I’ll meet up with you later!”

“Wait. I don’t remember Luke’s address,” says Wolfgang.

You fight back a smile. You can’t help it. “Figure it out,” you tell him. “He’ll probably meet you on top of the thing if you’re late.”

“The thing?” he asks, playing the part.

“The thing!” you shout.

“Ugh. You’re the worst.”

“Whatever,” you say, hanging up on him. You look back at Sattler, who is tired of waiting.

“You done with the highschool drama?” she asks, sucking in a whole lot of smoke.

“I’m done with highschool forever,” you say. “What’s the plan? We split up or something?”

Sattler scowls. “You’re a spazz, you know that? You stick with me like glue. Something comes up your pyrotechnics don’t work on, I’ll handle it, got it?” she says. “That’s the deal, if you want this so bad.”
>>
>>40028847

You agree, albeit reluctantly. No way to weasel out of this.

Sattler falls out, and you follow.

You come up to the front doorsteps, meeting the greeting party head on.

There’s six of them. One’s wearing clothes so baggy he’s practically swimming in them, while another chiseled looking dude with bronzed skin and no shirt sits nearby, smoking something that is not a cigarette. The rest are similarly decorated, some tattooed, some without shirts.

Sattler and you step up, garnering a bunch of unfriendly looks due to your vests and FBI logos everywhere. You can feel some power from the group, but it’s muffled somehow. You can’t really tell who specifically it’s coming from, though.

The storming waves of wrath breaking off of Sattler kind of hint at her plan, though.

“You girls trying to be cops or something?” asks one of the gang, seeing through your paper thin disguises in an instant.

Better we do a bit of good and maybe she doesn't figure it out rather than just straight murdering defenseless idiots.

You mean the ones with guns? These dudes ain't defenseless and just because they're human doesn't automatically mean they aren't a threat or that we should take pains to help them here. The majority of our killcount is humans and I'm not even counting our bloodrages, so I have no idea what you're basing your thought process on here.

I'd prefer not to kill her, but if she finds out about us its almost guaranteed she'll try to kill us, which is my main reason for making sure we can kill her.

Are you retarded? Sierra doesn't give a single flying fuck about Nabuth's goons. She enjoyed killing them.

She feels bad about the swaths of innocent people she's killed during bloodrages, but Sierra has no problem with killing humans just because they're human.
>>
>>40029294
Whether or not someone's human is not a factor in whether or not Sierra feels bad about killing them. She doesn't like killing non-assholes. That's about it.

You’d rather not kill everybody that gets in your way. Some of these guys could just be in the wrong place, with the wrong friends. You lean over. “Hey, I’m not sure all these guys are demons,” you say to Sattler.

“Stalin and Hitler weren’t demons either,” Sattler mutters back to you, her tone low, burning with some kind of fierce energy.

You can’t really argue with that. It’s not like you’re against killing people. It’s just... they have to be the right people, you guess. And Sattler’s pretty sure these are the right people, so maybe that’s enough for you. You feel the adrenaline starting to circulate in your veins. (-3 Stress: 51)

A big, tall guy with a sweaty tank top and a shiny bald head stands up, and puts his hands on his hips. Strange tattoos wrap around his neck and arms. “You ain’t fooling anybody with that badge,” he says, glaring at Sattler. “You want, I can call the real police on your asses.”

Sattler tilts her head, examining his tattoos. “I like your tats,” she says, oddly calm.

The huge guy glowers and folds his arms, baring them for her to see. They bear stylized lettering up and down their whole length. “I can give you a close-up view,” he says, his voice a low, threatening rumble. “Now, turn around and walk away, unless you want an even closer view.”

“Where’d you get ‘em?” asks the angel, resting her palms on her machetes.

The guy looks at her, and you, warily. “Local place,” he says, feigning detachment. But you can feel fear. It is sweet.

He has made a mistake. He didn’t avoid the question, he lied. And if he lied, that means he has something to hide.
>>
>>40029539

Sattler knows, and she nods, thoughtfully. Then, with a casual movement, Sattler takes her SMG out of her bag, and spins a silencer onto it.

The big guy backs up in alarm, and Sattler puts a trio of bullets through his chest. He collapses backwards onto the stairway into the apartment complex, blood gushing out all over the place, too thick, too dark for a human. The smell of it fills your senses – lush, full, and ripe. Stygian blood.

The glamor bursts, revealing a deformed mass of muscle and sinew, with massive forearms and spikes jutting out at random, squeezed into jeans and a white tanktop. But the demon does not rise to fight. It is dead.

The others recoil in shock and terror. The one in extremely baggy clothes, however, lifts his shirt, probably going for a gun. Another one, a lean dude with sweaty skin and bulging eyes, crouches in place like a frog, and leaps forward toward you.

You may have a point there, that may have been said. Can't remember that right now, won't search through the whole history to find out so I'll take that as you say. Point I'm trying to make: It was never actually said. The drugs may have been hinted at to be uglier stuff (altough she might have referred to the cutting of it, going by the wording you provided), but contrary to what was said here it was never specified, or only in retrospect.

Can we stop with the prioritized crits? They happen reasonably often, considering /tg/ dice being vicious not random things which enjoy having a 3% chance happen way more than that.

And all they end up doing is making Sierra look like a blithering retard at the things she's supposed to be tolerable at, while we gloss over an update or two until she starts being competent again.

Depends how hard it is to maintain glamors in a fight. I don't think we've ever actually tried before.

We're in an extremely shitty position because of the 3 people who voted to talk to Satt. Not that we weren't in the Philostrathus fight when we double critfailed, but this was caused by a level of stupidity that rivals walking into Meckor's trap alone.
>>
>>40029893
Crit fails really aren't. Once one happens it no longer matters what plans, schemes, or contingencies are in place, or how good at "thing" that the character is supposed to be. They just decide to start chewing off their own metaphorical foot.

They are suddenly, and temporarily replaced with Dumbfuck, the Retardinator, who halts all forward progress and turns waiting for an update from something hopeful to something both boring and depressing. So fun.

>>40029990

Mistakes make the successes sweeter.

>>40029865

Each roll has a 6% chance of critting, either positively or negatively. And it only seems like a lot of crits because crit rolls tend to be more memorable.

Anyway, a couple bad rolls won't ruin everything. Really bad things happening are more dependent on situations and decisions. If nothing else, they give opportunity for some setbacks which must be overcome.

For all the times you screw up, you do manage to make things better afterward. Kind of.

>They just decide to start chewing off their own metaphorical foot.

Depends on the skill of the writer. A good writer would have us make a believable human mistake and the enemy getting lucky / surprising good at whatever.

Fortunately, Languid is a pretty good writer. When we critfailed during the Hugo fight, Sierra didn't suddenly decide to be a retard, she just missed with her lighting bolt and struck a seemingly innocent pile of metal. Unlucky mistake leading to giant killer robots.
