You wake with a start, limbs twitching and flailing as your body goes about rousing your mind.

This is- what? A roof? It's too low. And made of silk? What is this even-
Oh. Yes.

Your tent.

You blush slightly at the memory-
You unpacked the things that your sister had sent with you- A few poles, and absurd amount of silk, pegs and ropes-
And then you stared at it.

Weren't tents supposed to, y'know, build themselves? Just, whoosh and all that?
You might have stalked one of the other guards, waiting and watching to see exactly how this whole process worked.

Well, even armed with a vague idea of how to do it, and the slight blush of embarrassment about thinking bits of wood and cloth might be somehow automated- You wrestled your instincts down, and pitched the tent with everyone else, rather than leaving a mussed pile of tent materials on the ground and retreating up a tree.

And of course, your tent was more of a blanket fort on the first eve. But you learn fast!
Also, Kenzington apparently heard you'd spent some time staring at all the bits with a lost look on your face, and he's showed you what to do the next time the caravan pulled to a halt.

The important thing was that you can now do it.

As for the actual caravan- And the work that entailed-
Well, that bit is easy.

Despite your offer, Caravans don't travel with more wagons than they have beasts of burden, so you kept pace alongside or behind or in front- whatever was asked of you.
With your size, travelling inside wasn't within the realm of possibility- So you were off the hook for watch shifts at night, with Sheszka and Jin taking your place.

In turn, you carried them during the day, keeping them fresh for the evening.

For the time being, though, it's morning.
And that means... well, whatever you want, sort of. You wake up a bit early.

>Clean up your tent, might as well.
>Do a round of camp. Think of it as a morning stretch.

She might have gone camping but with self-assembling tents and other modern conveniences.

You leave your tent standing for the time being. No sense in making noise this hour of the day.

Complete silence might be a bit beyond you, though- You stretch once you're free of the tent, cracking your neck gently, a little sigh of happiness slipping free as you pull your arms overhead, back and shoulders slowly moving from stiffness to that pleasant note of relief.

Your footsteps, at least, you keep under control.
Wandering through the maze of tents, each chitin spike falling gently to the ground, absolutely silent- You can appreciate the early morning all the more easily.

The tents aren't all that tall- the ones that aren't yours, anyway.
A slow shifting sea of waterproof cloth, the rustle of them all replicating the tides in the morning breeze.
The wind is nice, especially at this time of morning- Heading south as you are, the heat is slowly coming back, a gradual uptick in temperature with every day on the road.

At least it's a dry heat. You couldn't take another round of that summer humidity. Sheszka is amazing, but she's your friend, not an air conditioner.

You hit the edge of the the encampment, emerging next to one of the many guard posts- enough to circle everything, each in sight of two others.

Triss- Tristiania, really, though she apparently utterly refuses to answer to such- is hunched over in her seat at the temporary post, hands playing idly with a crossbow-
You were a little surprised to meet another elf so soon. And more so when you found she'd grown up amongst humans and halflings, and had no understanding of the elven language at all.
>>
>>40055358

A bit of embarrassment later, you were chatting amicably with her- An adventurer from the area near the dwarven mountains. She'd told you she'd been at this sort of work for full on three decades, and she certainly looked the part-

One ear nicked, an engraved eyepatch covering her left socket, a not so small collection of scars contained in a rather short, straw blonde haired woman.

You'd gotten to know most of the guards, so far- The merchants were a little distant, but that's not the sort of thing that bothers you.

You stop trying quite so hard to stay silent, letting your legs clatter as you move closer to the elf.
Nothing worse for the nerves than a giant spider appearing out of nowhere, apparently. And you'd vastly prefer to stay un-perforated.

>Wave by her and do a lap of the camp.

You wait and watch for the tell-tale ear twitch that lets you know that she knows that you're here.
Logic follows that this means she won't shoot you, which is good.

You keep your voice soft, dawn only starting to break over the horizon. People will be up and moving inside the hour. Caravans move with the sun. Most horses and things seem to lack your night vision.

"Morning, Triss."
She responds with a grunt.
"Morning, kiddo."

You sigh, dropping next to her at the guard post.
"When are you planning to use my name, yes?"
"Dunno. When're you planning on getting older?"

You click at her, crossing your arms.
"I do that everyday, like everyone else. And I am not that young, yes."
"Not that young."
"I am wise beyond my years."

She chuckles slowly, leaving her crossbow in her lap as she stretches her arms out, shaking her head.
"Kid, do you know how old I am?"
"Have you told me?"
"Nah."
"Then it seems like a rather simple answer, yes."

"I'm over eighty. And you- A monster just leaving home- hmmm. Somewhere between one and two, I'd guess."
"Hah! Wrong."
"Less than a year then? Well done."
"That's right, yes. Wait-"
"And that is why you're kiddo."

You sigh.
"Fine. How was the night watch?"
"Boring. We're moving your tent around so different people get to deal with shit."
"Huh?"

She draws a circle in the air with her hand lazily.
"Wolves and stuff like that'll only approach from the opposite of wherever you've set up. So we rotate you around the edge of the camp, and different guards get to shoot at wolves."
"I have been here for less than three days."
"That just means it hasn't been my turn to shoot at something yet."
>>
>>40056539
A shrill whistle sounds twice, the morning signal.
Twice to wake, a single long note for food, and three to let people know that it's time to move out.

All around you the camp comes to life, Triss standing and shaking out her legs, people emerging from tents with yawns and varying states of dress.

"Alright. Get moving, I've gotta go pass out in a cart."
"Nice speaking to you, yes."
She laughs.

"Sure, sure. Lemme know when you've got open spots back there. It's apparently comfy."
"I think it may take some time."

You make... something approaching haste for your tent.
Actual haste would involve a great many injured merchants and merchant friends and family and probably adventurers too.

The camp gets a little busy at two whistles.

Still, you make it back easily enough, pulling up the stakes and folding the huge mass of silk into a slightly less huge mass of silk. And then everything is tied into a bundle, added to the guard cart- Which a pair of adventurers insist is actually called the 'Gart' though you've already adopted the stance of ignoring that.

Is there something about adventurers that just makes them crazy? Or maybe only crazy people become adventurers?
You're not sure.

In any case, you're reasonably normal, so it's nothing to get worried about.

You spend a moment to double check your personnel cargo- Jin and Sheszka are in place, Ezzy is under the shell currently as she ate too much and is too fat to wrap around your neck, and Nin has literally tied herself behind you in something resembling a child carrier so that you everypne can sleep while you carry them.

You're half tempted to wake the non-working members up.

In the end, the quiet morning wins out, and you set yourself to helping people behind schedule- Prying up tents, holding the cloth so people can fold it easier, dealing with children attempting to ride you.

The last is a bit more difficult.
You haven't got a problem with children, per se, but you also haven't got any room left.
Or any safely secured room, rather.

Also, your job is to stab things, so you leave the kids with their parents as you trundle away to breakfast.

Your stomach never lies to you- A single note blares out through camp, the sign that foods ready and the morning is progressing.
But you're already there, ready and waiting and hungry.

The less giant and spider shaped members of the expedition share a massive pot of stew- Leftovers and broth from the night before serving once more.
You get a deer's leg.
>>
>>40057604
And that suits you just fine.

You find the guard's circle easily enough, the lot of them convening at near the same time you do- Maybe the stomach thing is something adventurers share. They certainly seem to have your ability to eat whenever and wherever.

"Good morning, yes."
You get a chorus of grunts, greetings, and people slurping through stew in a way that sounds vaguely like speech, which is all sorts of impressive.

The merry (not) band of guards is readying up for the day, fuelling themselves as the sun rises.

The morning watch skips the meal, making for a covered wagon that serves as the mobile barracks, and you're left with the people who've had varying amounts of sleep.

There's the twins, two completely different and utterly unrelated men who both happen to be named Georg. One's short, stocky, frequently mistaken for a dwarf and covered in axes.
The other is wiry, looks like he could be part giraffe, and has a magic sling of some sort.
You're fairly certain it's magic.

Slingstones don't normally catch fire or shriek like a banshee.

That's what you're assuming, anyway.

Cake is making faces at her breakfast, a halfling mage with an obsession with sweets. You haven't managed to get her real name yet, being assigned to different spots during patrols- You're the vanguard, and she's part of the people you're supposed to be protecting.
She's friendly enough, though she tends to squabble with the children when they try and steal her candy.

There's the mysterious stranger, a heavily cloaked man who is constantly suffering beneath the sun for his folly.
He's also not mysterious or a stranger, a man named Alex from one of the villages along this route, you're told.
He keeps trying to talk in a hoarse voice, and Nin ended up scolding him and telling him he was going to hurt his throat like that.
>>
>>40057617
And finally there's the paladin, a young man- Maybe? You're not sure. Red hair, green eyes, a constellation of freckles on their tanned face, and some incredibly shiny armour.
Also, the ability to heal and smite and all that.

Most importantly, their god has no issues with monsters, so you get along fairly well, swapping stories of training-
Where most of the people around apparently pick up the skills as they adventure, Mom's regimen shares more than a few similarities with the kind of thing trainee knights are put through.

You've shared reminiscing over sleeping in the training ring, or being unable to lift your arms, or thinking for one beautiful second you have your trainer beat. Their name is Eiryn, and you're unsure of whether or not it would be rude to ask their gender.

Breakfast is fun.

You give a wave to your co-workers with your free hand, chowing down on a very reasonable amount of meat.
Probably not enough, really.

You head for the 'kitchen'- which is, in actuality, the large fire set in the centre of the wagon circle, and the heart of the caravans stops.

The chef- And caravan head- points accusingly at you as you emerge into teh circle, firelight reflected in your carapace-

"No more food fer you, monster! Avaunt!"
"Good morning, Kenzington. Do you know what that word means?"
"Nah. Raea yelled it at me once and tried ta threaten me with a holy symbol."
"Seems reasonable."

He shakes his head sadly, turning to face a thin, cloaked woman with a clipboard. Well. Nailboard.
It serves the same purpose though.

The man gestures pleadingly towards her, as though his hands could convey the weight of his speech-
"See? Sanny, this is why we can't trust women. It's a mystery why anyone would ever-"
"The only mystery here is how the hells I ever married you."
"Ack! Betrayed by my own wife! Ruins!"

She sighs, brushing dark curled hair from her pale face.

"Good morning, Sanny."
"Morning, Lyra. Taking well to the tent?"
"Sleeping on the ground is still strange, yes."
"Mhm. Lost of monsters have trouble with, well. Leaving home. Being out of their element is more literal for them."

You nod along, pointedly ignoring her husband, a task she shares with you.

"Ah- I came to ask about the assignments for the day, yes."
She smiles, the expression warming her eyes as she taps at her board.
"A little over-enthusiastic, but it's better than the opposite."
"Staying in place is hard."
"I don't doubt it. I've moved you up again- You'll head out with Eiryn and Georg Two to do some hunting."
>>
>>40058524
"One for me and two for the caravan?"
"Maybe two for you. And three for the caravan. The next village is mostly farms, a bit of extra meat will do us some good."
"Wouldn't they have a lot?"
She shrugs.
"Free is better."

You nod again, and wave goodbye before you head back to the guard's circle, chased by the voices of the caravan's leaders.

"Alright, we need to- What do you think you're doing?"
"I figure as long as I'm weepin' these great tears, I could use them to flavour the stew-"
"Idiot!"
"Heartless!"
"I'll give you heartless, you-"

Getting back out of the swirl of people is a little harder than it was getting in-
The closer it gets to the triple whistle, the more of a traffic jam the camp becomes, everyone trying to reach their own wagon and fill it with their junk.

And everyone shares a wagon. Which means that each wagon has a lineup.

Needless to say, you're mildly rattled by the time you break free of the endless tide of humanity, finding solace and serenity past the edges of camp.

With the sun already rising higher and higher, you set up quickly-

No sparring or anything, just stances, slow movements, thrusts and twirls.
Familiarizing yourself with your work, rather than turning it into reflex.

It does double duty- it's quiet, calming, and it doesn't wake up any of your sleeping friends. Of course, it also isn't much of a workout, but you'll take things one step at a time when it's building up to be this sort of a day.

You're about halfway through the third piece of your routine, breathing calm and easy, spear shifting from hand to hand, arcing through the moning air- When the whistle blows.
Once, twice, three times.

You brush your hair from your face with a sigh, turning and making for the road.
Gods bless your all-terrain limbs, letting you easily skitter up the sides of the road to reach the front of the caravan.

The vanguard is already assembled, Georg number one and Cake bossing around a few volunteers armed with simple looking crossbows, readying themselves to stay before the caravan all day.

And further up is your team- Georg number two and Eiryn, armed, armoured abd dangerous, ready to kill random wildlife to feed the neverending pit that is the stomachs of the caravan.

A truly noble purpose.

You set off without words, whistling and humming and enjoying the cool air before the sun turns the world into a practice desert.
You're four days from home, and you've only cried once.

About 7.

Thanks for playing!

You're technically 2/5 evolutions, but a third tier monster, which is wreaking havoc on my brain when I try to explain myself, I think.

Monster tiers

1 common
2 uncommon
3 rare/elite
4Very rare/very dangerous
5diety

bout right?
>>
>>40059575
Thanks for the game.
>>

Sorry, not tiers of power or anything- I just call the different evo levels tiers.

Tier 1: Base form
Tier 2: Generic Species Evolution
Tier 3:Specialization begins
Tier 4: Specialization Finalized
Tier 5: Ascendant
Tier 6: Mythical

As a Grave Arachne, you're at tier 3- you've started to specialize, for lack of a better word, in your abilities.

Thanks for playing!

I was thinking along the lines of accounting for power parity of base forms, since you'll see a LOT more lamia or goblins who are weaker by far than a Arachne. But that evo information is nice, We'll be at Mythical by quest end.
>>
>>40060041

Next level we develop a metal frame and electric lights, ensuring we have truly become the armored personnel spider humvee.
>>
>>40060080
Power parity, in any normal circumstances (which is to say, monsters leading natural lives) tends to balance out due to their own internal growth rates- Lamia and harpies and the like find it much easier to evolve than arachne, as they grow faster.

Goblin evolutions jump power tiers at an absurd rate- the difference between a widow arachne and a basic arachne are noticeable, but not insurmountable. The difference between a goblin and a hobgoblin is absurd, and the difference between a hobgoblin and an ogre is almost untouchable.

Say no to spider wheels.

AND SEATBELTS

Honestly I think that region's goblins were on performance enhancing drugs.

>you've started to specialize, for lack of a better word, in your abilities.

I'm just glad we went with skull butt over any of the other forms.
>>
>>40060168
If we're near tier 4, are we gonna start seeing crazy evolutions, soon?
Like things partially or entirely disconnected from the base monster?
>>
>>40060168
But does power equalize between species at higher tiers?
>>
>>40060168
If we end up swinging by the dwarves and doing more smithing stuff, Forge would probably become a bigger part of our next evo, right?
>>
>>40060290
I'd imagine any monster who hits Mythic is basically a deity, so prolly.
>>
>>40060322
We are a giant spider.
Chitin is our body, and fire is our blood.
We have pet over a thousand heads,
Unknown to fate, nor known to control.
But, this spider will never beat Mom.
So, as we pray.

Unlimited Spider Works!

>>40060192
You already produce sticky and strong material, you don't need any.

>>40060193
Well, they were, technically- The idea that your exp rate is set after birth by how much you push yourself was lifted entirely from the LN. The mc of that forcefully training the other goblins is what lets them evolve early,

>>40060234
Skull butt has been fun to write.

>>40060274
Yes. absolutely.

>>40060290
Not in an equivalent way but yes? Like- Barring extremely specific evolutions, a harpy will never be as physically powerful as an arachne of the same tier. But they might be able to cut through stone with the force of their wingbeats, or break the sound barrier, or incinerate a city then revive themselves from the ashes.

>>40060322
That depends what you do, of course.
Also, I think someone asked if there would be multiple possible evo's, and the answer is yes- and that refusing one would offer you the next in line right away.
>>
>>40060424
What happens if we refuse all the evos available at a given time?
>>
>>40060407
>Transported to a realm with thousands of angry Lyra's

Don't know whether to be aroused or terrified.
>>
>>40060452
I get increasingly desperate with my offers, trying to conjure up different forms to see if you'll take one-

Nah, you'd just have to wait till you met the requirements for another.
>>
>>40060502
Hmm what level are our requirements currently?
>>
>>40060571
Level requirement is the same as always- 100 is the max. As soon as you hit it and fall asleep, you're gonna get evolved.

Other requirements work more like achievements, and I track those by what you've done, what you roll well at, and what Lyra is interested in. Those are what determine what is up for offer when you evolve.
>>
And now I want a list of what we've pulled off since we evolved.

Thinking big things:
-Wolf invasion
-Sheszka Saving
-Killed hydra
-Killed giant bear
-Met all forest races?
-Tons of earth bullshit
-Kept wolf pack
>>
>>40060730
Made Lann embrace her elf heritage
>>
>>40060730
Reforged that spear. Did some smithing too. Not sure that that counts as being as impressive as the rest, but we did it.
>>
I'm kinda hoping for alternate forms for Lyra if she gets too huge - as in something like a humanoid form similar to the werewolves.

Imagine her waking up thinking she's human again? Only for her to accidentally a whole wing of the building she's laying in? Oops.
>>
>>40060730
Went and grabbed the evo achievements from last time

THE DEEP EARTH CALLS: 2/1
THESE HANDS HAVE WROUGHT: 2/2
GIANTSLAYER: 3/1

and then for the other evos we didnt get:

Achievements!

Wolf spider was fulfilled- You just filled the Grave spider requirement more.
Grave Spider required Giantslayer.
The other two were for Forgesworn.
Wolf achievement was FEROCIOUS HUNTER: 5/5
For taking down serious game.

Orb Achievement was PATIENT SPINNER: 0/3
An orb subtype was ACTIVE TRAPPER: 3/3

Other specialty achievements!
STRIKE THE EARTH: 1/3
For using earth magic offensively. The only thing I could count was the trap.

BLOOD OF THE EARTH: 0/1
For using magma offensively (a high rolled earth spell)

Other potential evolutions included A half lord.
STEEL GAZE, STEEL ARMS: 5/5
Arms referring to weapons, of course.
>>
>>40060776
Is that before or during when she has to relearn how to walk on two legs?
>>
>>40060876
Yes. Could be a nice throw-in on the whole reincarnation thing. Lyra gets a human form because a part of her is fundamentally human. (Seriously the reincarnation needs to be tied in a little more)

The new evolution is stupidly rare (not necessarily powerful) because most monsters arent that radically adaptable.
>>
>>40060864
>Orb Achievement was PATIENT SPINNER: 0/3
I wonder if Elle can level up with more and more complicated and difficult dresses?
>>
>>40060976
Pretty sure she's a warp for an orb spinner.
>>
>>40059323
I missed the entire thread because of you and your scientific research you made me have to do!
