Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you got a message from your friends and reached Anthus.

It is currently the 11th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH. Happy birthday!

You set off towards the Academy, picking your way though a mass of refugees, merchants, soldiers, and all manner of other travelers. However, as you pass the devastation wrought by the dragon your curiosity gets the best of you. Could they have already cleared away the beast's corpse? Could you perhaps find one of the dragon's scales dislodged at some point during the battle, or after its demise?

You turn your guar sharply, breaking away from the crowd and entering the devastated market district. Rubble is strewn everywhere, the cobblestones blackened and cracked by the heat of the dragon's breath. A few intrepid traders have already set up market stalls in prime real estate now vacated by the previous occupant due to the attack. You wonder how many perished in the blaze, and how much wealth was lost in the attack.

You follow the destruction as it winds its way through the city, interrupted occasionally where the dragon presumably took flight. The streets are largely abandoned in this area, though you see a few people peeking out at you through windows and a handful of children playing in the street, some sort of ball game you're unfamiliar with. They're trying to smack a leather wrapped ball through a hoop on the wall of a building with a knobbly club.

You see the spines of the dragon's corpse from a distance but it isn't until you enter a plaza that you see the corpse itself. It's massive, easily forty feet long with a wingspan twice or three times that. The wings have already been stripped to the bone, presumably to be used as leather, and the head has been chopped off. A number of commoners are engaging in some sort of tunneling operation into the neck of the beast, carving out its meat for steaks and who knows what else. A few are trying to break off the skeletal wings or saw through the scales, but they don't seem to be having much luck.

You don't see any guards around, so presumably it's some sort of free for all. You might be able to snap off a scale using Earth Magic, but if they're as resistant to Earth Magic as they are to fire you'll have trouble doing so. You could also see about jamming a lever underneath a scale and trying to pop it off, but some peasants are trying to do just that and having no luck, or very little luck. A team of six has managed to pry a scale partially off but one of them slips and the lever snaps.

How on Earth did they manage to remove the head in the first place without carving through the scales? Perhaps a team of Vatis managed it.

Anon, the tail is massive, we can't carry it around.
People are making a TUNNEL into its neck, its tail at the base would likely be like 3 or 4 meters thick at least. Assuming a length of 10 meters)which is a low estimate on my part), that's at least 42 cubic meters of dragon flesh and bones and scales and whatnot(not entirely accurate, since I calculated with a regular cone, but this was a low of the low estimate anyway).

What I meant to add on to this is a cart shouldn't require that much Vys betweenthe sword and the.pendent we should be good

Can we try wrapping the cloak around the tail and channeling vys into it to flip it and thus cut it off?
If it doesn't work do the other thing.
>>
>>40072919
We serious don't have enough vys for that. We would need more than what we currently have.
>>40072956
>>40072973
That exponentially increases with the size and this thing's tail is big.
>>

Test that with something less deadly in case the object just gets ejected out of the cloak, because what we could fit into the cloak of its tail could totally kill us by just blunt damage.
Get a stick and test it on that.
Or, hell make an ice rod, or grow some plants, and test it on that.

You draw the small ivory statuette from your cloak, pressing down on a hidden lever concealed among the elaborate carvings. A blade springs forth, fully formed from the handle. It's short, but it's also unbreakable so far as you're aware. It ought to serve well as a lever.

You glance briefly towards Regulus before dismounting. “Come on, let's try and pry off one of these scales. Some associates of mine want one as research material.” Regulus nods, before dismounting himself and following you up to the dragon.

You look around, finding a particularly large and thick scale near the abdomen. It takes some wiggling but you manage to get the sword underneath the scale. You lean your weight against it, but neither the sword nor the scale bend an inch. Frustrated you start to channel vys, pressing your hand against the scale and weakening its connection to the dragon's flesh. It's slow going, you find yourself pumping ridiculous amounts of vys into the scale for very little gain. Eventually you start to see holes form in the base of the scale, so you cut off the flow, but you're already feeling slightly drained.
>Vys Pool: (43/53)

You motion Regulus over and you both put your all into lifting the scale by leveraging the sword. You see the scale start to slowly bend away from the surface of the dragon, so you start to condense water from the air and push it into the gab. You move incrementally, freezing the water to push the scale further from the surface of the dragon and then holding it in place with the sword while you melt the water, condense more to fill the gap, and then refreeze it.

>>
Snapping rings through the clearing as the scale starts to come free. Sweat pours down your brow, and your muscles burn from the exertion. You can hear Regulus' internal components squealing as he tries to apply yet more force to the sword. Something is going to have to give, and it won't be you. You start to channel metal magic into your limbs and torso, reinforcing them as you dig your heels into the cobblestones and drive your shoulder into the flat of the blade. Finally there's one last, loud snap and you smash into the dragon's flank, the scale flying off its side.
>Vys Pool: (37/53)

A crowd of peasants had gathered to watch you and Regulus work, and one of them happens to be in the path of the scale you managed to snap off. It clocks him in the forehead, knocking him flat on his ass. He seems to be unconscious, blood welling up from a cut in his forehead. Meanwhile the scale rebounds, twisting through the air for a moment before coming to clatter against the street a few feet from you. The crowd eyes you warily as you pluck up the scale, and heal the commoner who got clocked with a dismissive wave.

You tuck the scale into your cloak before someone tries to nab it, wiping your sleeve across your forehead to keep sweat from your eyes. Collapsing the sword, you toss it into your cloak as well. You step back a few feet to admire the dragon, noting that the scales seem to be part of the dragon's skeleton rather than its skin. Underneath it has a thick, rough hide.

(2/3)
>>
You start to move towards the tail, inspecting it. The plates near the tail are smaller, and generally held closer to the hide beneath. You want to snag the entire thing, but near the base it's far too think to fit into your cloak. You'll need to take it a good five or six feet down the tail if you want It to fit inside your cloak. You could probably use your Hiacian Sabre to hack away at it, it might take a few tries but it should get the job done.

An idea occurs to you. You can reverse the polarity of your cloak, switch which side opens up into the void and which side is more or less mundane. You wonder what would happen if you switched the polarity while it had something inside of it? Might be an easy way to cut something large. Might rip open a portal to the void.

You wander down to the tip of the tail, removing your cloak and struggling to lift the massive limb in any meaningful way. Eventually you get the tip in, and start to shimmy your cloak over the rest of the tail. It's time consuming but with Regulus' help you manage. You get it as far up the tail as you can manage, which ends up being about fourteen feet. The last two are just too thick to fit inside the cloak.

Then you channel vys into the cloak, and there is a gut wrenching ripping noise. It seems to fill the world, drowning out all other sound. You feel a pressure against your chest and then you're flying through the air, a ringing filling your ears. You have the good sense to pull your head forward and shield it with your arms so that when you smash into the wall of a building it's with your shoulders, not the back of your head. It hurts, but you'll survive.

You just sit there for a few moments before pushing yourself slowly to your feet. Aylin is shouting at you, though you don't hear her speaking. Just a high pitched whine. You push her aside and wander over to your cloak, where it sits tattered on the ground. It's been ripped down the middle, almost all the way through, and shredded besides. More like a collection of rags than a proper cloak. No longer is the fabric an almost impossibly dark black, but rather a dull brown. You pick it up, finding the fabric coarse. You almost panic, before you notice thin strands of fabric stretching themselves across tears and stitching them back together. The progress is achingly slow, but hopefully given enough time your cloak will be functional again. You're not sure about the dragon's tail though. The point where it's cut off has been splintered, and scales have shot off in ever direction. Some are embedded in the walls of surrounding buildings. It's a miracle that nobody seems badly hurt.

Channeling magic, you heal your ears. You had a number of fractured bones and a busted ear drum. The pain in your shoulders lessens just as your hearing comes flooding back to you. Some of the commoners are shouting, though you're not really paying attention. Aylin keeps asking if you're alright. You hear stone clatter against stone as Regulus hauls himself from a pile of rubble. Seems he crashed through the wall of some sort of shop. He's covered in brick dust and dented, but seems otherwise fine.

For now you drape your cloak over your shoulders and stand, turning to ruffle Aylin's hair. “I'm fine, just a little stunned. My cloak is ruined though. Come on, lets get you to the Academy. All my money was in my cloak, so there's nowhere else we'll be able to stay.”

Regulus is already buffing out the dents in his surface, magic pouring off of him as he does so. “I will not be going with you.” His strange, warbling voice rings out across the silent clearing. “I must go to Aleamond. There is much to be done. Rhynia must be restored. I will be the one to do so.” He states decisively.

We might actually have a chance of seeing the end of Banished Quest before the year's out, if Soma could actually manage to avoid rescheduling threads every single week.

At the current rate and considering what he wants to do before the end of the Quest, it's unlikely as hell.

I see Banished Quest lasting into 2016.

1. get to the Shah and get rights to buy land
2. buy cheap farmland(which is cheap due to the scarcity/price of water)
3. while our father and SK works on the water plant we can either start by getting our GM robes or start by traveling to buy wood which we for the most part use to build up our family's fleet but can also be sold to finance the purchase of even more farmland(personally i'd like to buy it all for maximum money gains and pop growth)
4. finance SK anti air research for dragon protection
5. ???
6. profit

we build a fleet. Under our own name once our name is cleared.
And have our father use the ships and he gains a % of all profits made from the ships. But they are ours. And he will be the one making a % of profits under us. It will be basically his fleet just he only makes a % of profit he wouldn't have otherwise made. Give him economies of scale when he wants to by large bulks. And we're family so he should be to against dealing and helping us excel in business.

You walk up to Regulus, offering your hand. He stares at it for a moment before clasping your hand, shaking it slowly. “I've enjoyed traveling with you, for what it's worth. I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.” That's not entirely true, you don't look forward to a restored Rhynian Empire with an army of Rhynian constructs marching across the world conquering all comers.

Regulus stares at you in silence for perhaps a minute. “The same to you, Mikhael. I appreciate your acceptance of me as a traveling companion. Should our paths cross again, I will remember the kindness you have showed me.” Well that's a relief. If the construct army ever reaches the borders of the Shahdom you ought to be safe.

There is one other thing you wanted to ask him though. He worked under one of the greatest enchanters of all time. Surely he could pass on some nugget of advice. “Regulus, before you go. I've wanted to ask you for a while. Do you have any advice you could give me regarding enchanting? The art has been lost, but I've managed to piece together enough information that I consider myself a fair hand at the art. The foremost remaining expert, although that's not really saying much.”

Regulus once more falls silent, staring at you for what seems like an hour before he speaks. “I can tell you that you should never enchant without the proper equipment. Magnifying lenses are a must for properly engraving runes on small surfaces. Powerful Metal and Earth magics, to create the best materials for enchanting and carve runes onto surfaces. If you do not have a meditation chamber, I suggest you create one. Basic meditation chambers are simply metal pods designed to block out all light and sound, allowing you to cut out other distractions. Useful for finalizing enchantments. Small doses of Spice are likewise important in enchanting, although abuse can cause addiction. It allows one to more easily manipulate the soul.”

He pauses again, and you're about to thank him for his advice, but then he resumes speaking. “My creator always kept a dagger with her, her tool. Tools need not be daggers, or weapons of any sort. Some use necklaces, others bracelets. I know that one of my creator's rivals used an urn containing his father's remains. It does not matter what the item is so long as it is of personal significance to you. It could be a rock or a stick and serve just as well as anything else. The tool helps one center themselves, and from what my creator told me it allows one to more easily manipulate the strings of reality.”

Regulus nods, releasing your hand. “That is all that I can tell you. If I were to go on we would be here all day and I wish to depart.”

The two of you separate, and he sets off towards the docks. He doesn't take his guar. You wonder how he'll earn passage on a ship, or if that's even what he intends. You wonder if you'll ever see him again. If nothing else, he was an interesting fellow. Regardless, you turn to Aylin with a sigh and start to make your way towards the guar. “Come on, then. Not far to the Academy. You can take his guar, if you don't mind riding bareback.”

Aylin proves to be a surprisingly adept rider, better than you are by far. Soon you're riding through the gates into the Upper District, the streets widening significantly and the amount of trash and detritus in the streets lessening dramatically. The guards don't give you any trouble. Apparently you've acquired enough of a reputation that people recognize you, at least in Anthus. The guards at the entrance to the Academy grounds don't try to stop you're passage.

Get the fuck out of here.
>>
You stop in front of the grand double doors, just as resplendent as they were before you crashed them open with a boulder of ice. Dismounting, a stableboy runs out to take your guar and lead them over to a trough where they can mindlessly feed on moist slop. Aylin seems apprehensive, sticking close to your side and eyeing everyone suspiciously.

There is no mechanical difference between reading the book and vivisecting a subject. The only difference is that one path doesn't require you to hunt someone down who will either let you cut them open or who won't be missed if you kidnap them. Either way you get the same trait.

Take that as you will.

You push your shoulder into the door, the massive wooden construction sliding open slowly and allowing you to slip through the gap. It's hard to get through without sending dragon scales scattering across the floor but you manage it. Aylin slips in after you, and together you make your way through the grand entry hall. Aylin's neck seems to be on a swivel the entire time, her mouth hanging just slightly open. Humans do seem so easily impressed.

You reach the stairs up to the Archmagos' office, having Aylin open the door for you. The two of you climb the twisting stairwell up to the small doorway at the top of the stairs. You note that the plants lining the stairwell have been switched out. Instead of ferns or flowers, he's had a lattice set up along the walls and vines planted in pots at the base, making the entire stairwell seem like a tunnel of foliage.

You don't bother knocking. The door swings open of its own accord to permit you entry. Aylin starts, a surprised squeak escaping her. She practically hides herself behind you as the two of you stride through the doorway. Suresh calls down from the floor above just as two chairs weave themselves from the vines covering the floor. “I'll be down in just a minute! I'm working on a theory of mine regarding a new effect!”

A new effect? You wonder what it could be. You take a seat, and after a few moments Aylin follows suit. It's almost certainly more than a few minutes before Suresh comes down the stairs. He's not looking his best. His robe is dirty, his eyes bloodshot, and his hair a greasy mess. Seems he's really been burning the midnight oil, so to speak.

He sits down where there isn't a chair, only for a chair to weave itself as he falls. He glances from you, to the stack of dragon scales you're cradling, to Aylin. When he speaks, he sounds half delirious. “What's going on? You need something? Sorry I'm not really myself. I've been working on this project for months now but I really had a breakthrough yesterday and I swear by Pani's glorious tits I'm on the cusp of finally figuring this accursed spell out but I just can't seem to wrap my head around the concept of the mind.”

He's speaking at a mile a minute, and in Samjan to boot. Aylin is completely lost, though you were able to follow along well enough. Perhaps he's trying to recreate a metamagic effect to affect the mind with a spell? You're sure such a meta already exist, and you would've thought that if it existed anywhere it would be here or in the Grand Library of El-Amin. You suppose you thought wrong.

Experience matters, but so do the experiences of those who came before. Medical school is not just constant dissection, after all. Nor is veterinary school.

Speaking of veterinary school, vets aren't really a thing in this setting. Nobody cuts up animals unless they want to eat them. Indeed, if we're talking food animals you could totally find a book about the art of butchering and figure out all you need to know about animals. What we're talking about is giant spiders, hive mind lions, tortoises the size of houses, and dogs that spew acid. If you want to figure out why a dog spews acid out of its mouth, you're going to need to cut one open. Because there ain't any books written on the subject.

Also if we studied enough animals, with mormors help we could probably give animals the traits of others, maybe there's a solar powered animal that we could use to cut down on feeding our mounts.

I am Mikhael Abdul-Hakim, and I'm here to ask you a question. Is a vatis not entitled to the sweat of his own vys? No says the man in El Amin, it belongs to the shahdom. No says the man in Longia, it belongs to the dragon overlords. I rejected those answers; instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose... Mikland. A city where the oud player would not fear the crowd; where the vatis would not be bound by petty morality; where the great would not be constrained by the small! And with the sweat of your vys, Mikland can become your city as well.

You hoist the scales. “Real quick, could I get a bag for these? Woven from vines, or something? They're sort of a hassle to carry.”

He stares at you a moment, quirking an eyebrow and opening his mouth to speak only to notice your cloak for the first time since you arrived. He must really be out of it if he didn't already notice. He's a Grandmaster Nature Vatis. He can probably see you from a hundred different angles right now. “Oh, crap. What happened to your cloak? That's not the one you usually wear.”

You shrug your shoulders. “Actually, it is. I shoved a dragon's tail inside my cloak and tried to sever it by flipping the surfaces of my cloak. This happened as a result. It seems to be slowly repairing itself, but for now I'm sort of broke. I don't have much beyond the clothes on my back, my magic, and a few enchanted trinkets.”

A vine pushes up from the floor, then a second, before you know it dozens of thin strands of greenery are twisting themselves together into a large sack with a strap extending from the top. The vines sever themselves, depositing the bag in your lap, and you stuff the plates inside before pulling the strap over your head. Once it's sitting comfortably at the hip you relax into your chair, sighing in relief. “I don't suppose you have anything to eat?”

Suresh frowns. “No, no I don't. Now that you've mentioned it... I don't really recall the last time I ate. If you'll excuse me a moment.” He folds one of his legs over the other, resting his head against the back of his chair and closing his eyes. It's only a few seconds before sits up straight, eyes snapping open. “I've got sandwiches, fruit juice, and cookies on the way. Maybe getting some food in me will allow me to stave off the exhaustion for a while longer and finish this project.”

Your curiosity gets the better of you. “Just what is it you're working on? You said it was an effect, and it's related to the mind. Is it metamagic or an effect proper? Maybe if you bounce some ideas off me I can help.”

Suresh sighs, rubbing at his eyes. “It's awful. It's a metamagic effect. Designed to affect the mind. I know such a spell already exist, we have reports from Ancient Rhynia confirming as much. However, we don't know of any surviving scrolls. I've been trying to recreate it, and I've had some limited success. I've gone through a hundred revisions and prototypes. I've made spells which have all range of effects besides what I've intended. Gods above, I created a metamagic effect which causes only the hair to be affected by a spell. If you ever want to throw a fireball that only burns people's hair, I've got it for you. Yet the mind eludes me. I thought it might be an aspect of the soul, or perhaps an aspect of vys, but I just can't seem to figure out how the fuck it works.”

He mumbles something to himself. “I started off building from the animate spell, since that is essentially a spell which creates the mind, yet that path proved fruitless. I tried working with Metal and Nature magic, and I thought I had it, but instead I just ended up recreating the animate spell from scratch. I tried creating spells to affect the brain, since it controls the heart and lungs and the animate spell always focuses on the head, but I just created a spell to affect hair. I'm at the end of my rope, Mikhael. I can't figure this damned thing out.”

Sheesh, he's really in the throes of passion. You suppose you admire his work ethic, if nothing else. “Perhaps you should just take a break for a few days, attack the problem rested and refreshed.”

Suresh sighs. “Yes, perhaps that is what I ought to do. I make no progress this way. Anyway, I'm sure you've come to me for reasons beyond a discussion and a bag. Who's this girl?”

Don't the sea raiders have subs? Maybe we could work with them, they obviously do merc work, and our set up would be ideal for discrete resupply, especially if we littered supply stations all under the sea, which when we build our fleet, would be useful in two ways. The raiders could attack the shah's plants, making us do better, they could attack other kingdoms to further strengthen the foundation for the rebirth of the rhynihician empire

You rest a hand on Aylin's shoulder, even as she seems to shrink into her chair under the Archmagos' gaze. “This is Aylin. I rescued her from a village burned to the ground by a dragon. I was hoping you might take her on as a student. She's got a massive vys pool, for a human that is. On par with most untrained Samjan, easily.”

Suresh nods his head slowly. “Yes, I can see that. Has she had any prior training? Can she pay the fee for enrollment? I presume her parents are dead, so she'll be living on campus. She's a little older than most first year students but that's not a big deal.”
