What a crazy night.

Well, everything went better than expected.

The ships you thought were an enemy advance group instead turned out to have been boarded and taken over by that idiot of your brother, Karas. A Lunar helped him in the feat and will hopefully consider joining your forces for the upcoming battle. Admiral Rajaan Hazaakaa is alive (barely) and bailed them at the right time, thanks to Ocean Father's assistance. And, also thanks to him, the main enemy force - which should now number about 25 ships instead of 30 - is still lost in the stormy weather he conjured.

Your Manse, which will be your main fortress and defensive lynchpin for the entire operation, is nearly complete thanks to the massive effort of your entire workforce - mortals, Exalted, demons, undead, even Fair Folk (in her own way), and for the first time you have reason to hope that, when the Silver Prince will arrive on your coast, he will find it fully prepared to withstand any assault.

Any is it, then, that you're feeling this sense of uneasiness? A corner of your brain is telling you that this is all too good to be true. There's a catch somewhere, or maybe it's just going to be painful no matter how prepared you are.

Or maybe it's just the feeling of tension caused by the upcoming attack... delaying it is good, and you'll take every day, every hour, every minute you can delay it by, but it just prolongs the anxiety hanging in the air.

Torches, braziers, lanterns and light crystals have been lit and scattered all around the construction site, and the Exalted that are helping the workers are letting their Anima burn bright for added illumination. The entire zone, seen from above, looks like a gathering of colorful fireflies.

As you walk through the corridors of the Manse's upper level on your final inspection before moving on, and as this crazy night slowly begins to give way to dawn, you look around and you see people working desperately, to their bone. You see the fear of death in their eyes. No time is lost in frivolities: the work turns are crushing, and people eat fast and sleep less to crank more work hours.

>Well, they should get used to this. It's not going to change much. They're mortals, their fate is to work to please me.
>It's regretful, but necessary. We all have to make sacrifices, I hope they understand.
>This is not what I want Pearl to be. Hopefully, It won't have to be like this ever again. I want it to be full of smiles, music, and light.

>Who are we?
Maka, an exiled noble Exalted as a Zenith-caste Solar. Queen of Gem, now ruling the western island of Tianna. You have gathered a lot of allies and friends, and have a powerful Manse under construction.
But Tianna is actually an artificial island, built around a First Age Titan: an almighty flying fortress built in an ancient, forgotten age, and although this is kept secret, two Deathlords are seeking to obtain it.
The Tyrant of the Doomsday Machine, ghost of your past incarnation, seeked it as a weapon to cut her ties to the Neverborn. But you have persuaded her to try and seek redemption in the eyes of the Sun in other ways, and count her as an unlikely ally.
But now the Silver Prince is coming, to punish her and claim the Titan for himself in the name of Oblivion. And this looks like a battle you won't be able to talk your way out of...

>Solar? Zenith? I don't know Exalted...
This quest is as newbie-friendly as possible, and I want it to work as a newbie's intro to Exalted. If you have ANY question, ask in thread. For the setting, google "1d4chan exalted".

>Archive?
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Solar%20Quest

>System?
Dicepool-like system. When performing an action, everyone rolls 1d10 when posting. the first X rolls are considered, where X is equal to attribute + ability. Yes, this means that the more people are posting, the stronger Maka is, up to a limit of her attribute + ability.

>XP?
Attributes cost [current score x5] xp. Abilities cost [current score x3] xp, except Zenith costing [(current score x3) -1]. Charms cost 10 xp, except for Zenith-based charms (related to charisma and physical/mental fortitude) which cost 8 xp. At the end of every "session" (thread) you will be presented with a list of possible acquisitions.

Even though you've long become inured to the simple discomforts of weather, you shiver in the night breeze. Not from cold, you realize.

You don't like this. You don't like this, and you don't like being forced to stand this. You want to hear songs, to see smiles in these corridors and in the valley below, what will become your city.

Restless, you wander the corridors a bit more, seeking a peace of mind that, apparently, you're not going to just find that easily.

After staring into the dawning sun for a bit, however, you feel, if nothing else, a bit refreshed. The light gives you hope for the future.

It looked like Valeriana was really hit by the destruction of the Gloria.

And you can't blame her. Even in its final battle, a perfectly mundane boat made from wood and rope and canvas has gone toe to toe with Magitech battleship, and survived to tell the tale.

...You should talk to her.

You head to the room that she set up shop in the Manse's lowest levels. Pearl's Manse being impressively large, it has a lot of rooms and locales that you have just accepted, but not yet learned about in any detail.

Here, you enter a large, tall-roofed hallway-like space, with sparkling crystals set in the walls as light source. The floor is paved by large, even blocks, and the walls, smooth and featureless, have, every now and then, oddly-shaped sockets in them, at different heights. The double doors are large and wide, and further reinforce the idea that this location is meant to be some kind of workshop. What really makes that sink in, though, is the large high-temperature forge set in the far wall, glowing with fireless heat, with basins of ice-cold water standing by on either side, and other structures filling the rest of the wall: klins, smelting ovens, spaces set aside for other stations and machines.

Apart for those and a few large stone tables, though, the place is utterly empty, and your steps echo loudly. All that's in the vast room other than the distant workshops is a few things, a bedroll, a small table and chair, a lantern, stacks of books and papers, and a messy pile of tools of all kinds, stacked in a corner close to the entrance. Valeriana is sitting there, apparently idly sketching something with pencil on paper.

"...Valeriana? Are you all right?" You ask her, concerned, as you approach.

>Karas and that new Lunar boy should be in the field hospital. Let's see how they're doing.
>>
You nearly startle her. "Oh. Oh? Ah, Maka. Come in." She offers, without realizing that you already let yourself in.

"...I'm sorry for the Gloria. I know you loved it."

She lets out a long sigh in response, and then lifts her head, giving you a weak, fake smile. She's not a good liar. "It's alright. She had a good run while it lasted."

You just sit next to her and let her lean on to you. Sometimes, words are just not what people need.

Both of you sitting on the thick bedroll half-sprawled on the cold stone floor, you spend a few minutes like this.

"I knew it was going to happen." She says.

"You knew?" You ask her back. You heard her fine the first time, of course, but you feel like she needs the prompts to talk and vent a bit.

"Sorcery requires a sacrifice." She explains. "Sometimes it's something you just naturally have to give up as you pursue it. Like, after becoming a sorcerer you find you no longer can manage the free time for your favorite hobby. Sometimes it's something you give up to make sorcery happen, like throwing a necklace you love down a cliff because you know that a sacrifice is necessary. And... sometimes you don't get to choose, and Sorcery picks something for you." She lets out another long sigh. "When I managed to grasp Sorcery without having really lost anything in the process, I just... sorta thought that it must've been because I had actually lost something, just that it was something didn't know yet."

You nod. "...Sorcery seems vicious."

"It's a trial." She stares at the ceiling, idly kicking the air with her legs. "It's almost never something that will completely cripple you. But it will force you to re-evaluate your life, your priorities, or something like that." Then, she turns back to you. "I lost the Gloria, but I gained Sorcery. It's early to say if it was a good or a bad bargain. For now, I'm sad, but I don't regret it."

"Do you intend to stop designing ships now?"

(cont.)
>>
>>40091170
Man, I'd hate to see what would happen if she decided to go after Solar Circle.
>>
Her fake smile grows genuine for one moment, as she turns a paper to you and shows you what she was drawing: sketches of the Abyssal ships' components and guidelines on how to take them apart and reassemble them.

"Not a chance. I did the math, and we should have enough spare manpower to take apart these puppies and carry them away. Recycle the steel and feathersteel structural components for the Manse or keep them in stock, keep the magitechonological component intact to reverse-engineer when we'll have time..."

She leaves the sentence hanging, and you know why. "...And the Soulsteel?" You ask.

She groans. "...I have no idea. I... I don't really want to touch that stuff with a ten foot pole, personally. And besides, I have no idea how to work it. How do you even work a mental that screams at you and tries to bite your fingers?"

She nods, begrudgingly.

"But she can use it. And, this way, she can obtain Soulsteel without having to soulforge more ghosts."

"It's a bit of a technicality. The fact that that Soulsteel was made from, literally, the souls of the innocent, doesn't go away."

"It doesn't, but it lessens the incentives to making more of it. If we hid it or destroyed it, there would be less Soulsteel around. And... on one side that would be a good idea, but on the other, for Tyrant, having enough Soulsteel-"

Why? A nuclear option is the surest realpolitik safeguard against invasion in existence. You can look at the real world to prove that - when was the last time even a minor nuclear power got invaded - or look to Creation, where nobody has taken a single offensive action against Lookshy in the centuries since they proved they still have at least one orb in reserve.

Hell, that's went Saudi Arabia is trying to buy one of Pakistan's nukes.

If Pearl got a Soul breaker Orb, it could guarantee centuries of safety from external invasion.

Yeah, it was silly to hope that. What kind of supervillain designs his weapons like that anyway.

You give that paper a third look. "You're getting into Magitech? I thought you didn't like it."

"It's not that I don't like it." She shrugs. "I like it. Well, I don't mind it. But it's complicated, obtuse, abstruse, and kind of boring. To me at least... If you want Magitech stuff, ask Irene. She's a genius about that."

You think about it. "But she's a dragon-blooded. You're a Solar. Shouldn't you have, you know."

"A talent?" She waves her hand dismissively. "As far as I know, the only innate talents in Exaltation are Solars' leadership, Lunars' shapeshifting and protectiveness, Dragon-Blooded's ability in close teamwork, and Abyssal's talent for indiscriminate destruction. Magitech is Exalted-agnostic. Anyone can learn it. She just has the gift for it, I guess." Valeriana adjusts her glasses. "...I guess that, taking the long view, I might eventually come to know more about it than she does. But that day is very distant. And, more importantly, that day will only come if I keep learning from her." She beats a fist on her chest proudly. "What I do is engineering, not magitech."

"Can you explain the difference?" You ask. You think you know it, of course, but you'd like to hear it directly from her. "Explain it to me like I'm five or something."

(cont.)
>>
She nods with a smile, not at all annoyed by the request. "Basically, Magitech works by channelling Essence through inanimate objects. You know you can channel Essence into a magical material, right?"

"Yes, like when you attune an artifact."

"Attuning an artifact is straightforward, because it's an almost-uniform block of metal, generally. And it might have some magic it triggers, but that's magic. It comes from the artifact's little god and its interacting with your own Essence, not by any weird stuff."

That's not weird stuff at all, of course, you think.

"But when Essence goes into a magitech artifact, it's channeled in complex ways. Usually along circuits made by tiny wires or strips of magic material. Gemstones and crystals and little components with magical proprieties are connected to these wires so that they can respond to your Essence automatically. Like, for example... Lirika Power Metal is a special alloy of gold, copper, lead, harmonium, askalion, quicksilver, white jade and coal, and one part per hundred of ox blood. When it receives an essence flow in one direction, it expands, and when the essence goes in the opposite direction, it contracts."

You nod, trying to follow the reasoning. "What's it used for?"

"For example, placing strings made from this metal inside a suit of armor to act as an external skeleton, you could make artificial muscles that could supplement or enhance someone's normal strength." She claps her hands. "That's more or less the basic idea of it: get Essence to flow through something that reacts to it in a useful way."

She points at the drawing. "But all the rest? The structure, the girders, the walls, the bulkheads? That's engineering. Even large artifacts like a ship aren't ENTIRELY magitech. They're always a normal structure with some magitech bits where it counts. The engine. The control system. The weapons. Air filtration. Parasonantic sensors. Stuff like that."

(cont.)
>>
"...Why do YOU make sense when you talk Magitech, but Irene's just spewing gibberish?"

She giggles. "Because I'm a newbie, so I just know the basics. She's far deep into it."

"Speaking of her. " You mention. "Any clue as to what she's doing?"

Valeriana shrugs. "They want me to help them build some stuff. I think they're trying to assemble a working Warstrider from the bits still intact."

"Can you do it?"

"Maybe. I don't know." She admits. "I hope so."

"So... how's the Manse coming along?" You finally ask, expectantly.

"Do we have two days?" Valeriana asks you back.

"I don't know. Probably yes."

"Then we can finish it." She smiles. "That's all I can promise."

"...Thank you." You say, giving her a long hug. She deserved it, and she needs it. "You're... you're literally a godsend, Valeriana. I promise you... anything you need, anything you want, I'll move Creation and Yu Shan for it."

She gives you a light kiss on the cheek. "I know. And I hope you'll never have to. Right now... There's nothing I want, or nowhere I'd rather be than here. Even if I lost the Gloria, I've never been happier than this."

"Then just wait until we get rid of this daiklave hanging above our head." You note.

You leave, with the good feeling of not having just cheered up Valeriana, but of feeling a bit more cheerful and optimistic yourself. And head to the field hospital, improvised in another room of the Manse.

The beds that should be here aren't ready yet, of course, so instead Karas and Kynne, as well as several other mortals you recognize from the work crews, are lying on the floor, which is padded with blankets and pillows. Fortunately, the place seems fairly well supplied with medicines, even if in a rather messy way.

A handful of mortal doctors tend to the wounded best as they can, it seems, and they welcome you as you walk in, to such a point that you have to remind them to stop bowing to you and just worry about their patients.

"...Anything hurts?" You ask, sitting down next to your brother.

"Everything, but only when I laugh?" He answers back in a rehearsed way. But he doesn't look that bad, and definitely better than he was just a few hours ago, when you picked him up from the sand.

"Will you be up in two days? I want you in PERFECT shape. No more escapades. We need you in top form for the battle. Promise me."

"The medics here pronounced me dead on arrival. Six hours later they all started drinking." He grins smugly. "I'm fairly sure I'll be fine in two days."

"Alright, but only if you stay in bed."

He rolls his eyes and props himself up a bit. "I'll try. Can't promise anything. It's really boring here."

"You WILL stay down or I'm going to be really, really mad." You tap on his chest threateningly with an index finger, pushing him back down.

You turn to check the Lunar, Lynne. He seems to be tightly rolled-up in the blankets, and sleeping. His wounds seem almost healed as well.

If they're healing, did they shed their old, broken teeth, and start growing in new ones? Or are the old ones just slowly reconstituting themselves out of nothing?

You suddenly grab Karas' cheek and start pulling.

"HEI. UOT AH HOU HOINH." He protests, as you squint inside his mouth.

"Yes, they regrow in hours." A rather sullen-looking doctor wandering by comments, seeing your interest in the issue. The poor man has the looks of someone whose years upon years of medical studies just failed him.

"But for example, chipped teeth. Do they reform, or-" You ask him, curious.

"His... regrow, no matter how little sense it makes from a medical point of view. I guess his enamel just regrows from the pulp until the tooth is intact again or something." He gestures to Lynne. "He just grows new teeth. The damaged old ones just pop out and he springs a new one where he needs one."

"Fascinating." You finally let go of your brother's cheek, and he massages it, giving you a sour look. "So, let's talk business. Any info on the fleet?"

He gives you a sour look, but answers: "Those ships are hard as crap to take down, even without Exalted on then. We struggled against 5 with surprise on our side."

"How many Exalted do they have, then?"

"Moray Darktide for sure."

"Who's that?" You wonder.

"A Dawn Caste Pirate. He's a Solar, not an Abyssal, but he works for the Prince."

That idea troubles you. "Why?" You can only ask.

"He buys into his propaganda. And the Prince is really good at manipulating people."

You sigh. "Who else?"

"Probably a full circle or something close to. Maybe a few more. The Silver Prince has more Abyssals than other Deathlords."

"Just our luck."

"Probably the crewmen we took prisoner know more. I didn't exactly have time to interrogate them." He admits.

"I'll give it a try." You nod. "Now. I know a perfect way to keep you in this bed until you're healed."

He seems a bit worried for a moment. "What...?"

Karas looks at you, half-expectantly, half-terrified, as your smile widens.

"Are his wounds bandaged?" You ask a doctor. He shrugs in a vaguely affirmative way.

As a response, you pick him up from the floor and carry him out of the field hospital.

"What?" He asks, his uneasiness rapidly growing to panic. "WHAT?"

You carry him halfway across the manse, and drop him into Silk's Wyld Realm. He doesn't even make it to hit the floor that an impossibly fluffy bed appears under him, cushioning his impact and spreading rainbow-colored feather all around.

Then, of course, the feathers stand back up and walk back into the mattress diligently.

"Wh- What the heck is this place?" He asks, staring at the day-lit sky above him.

"It's a surprise." You grin. "Silk?"

"Oh no, you're not leaving me with your pet fae, sis." He tries to stand up, but you wrestle him back to bed. "Let me out of here."

"Silk?" You ask again, and the Fair Folk slithers out of a nearby waterway with an eerie smile on her otherwise expressionless face.

"Do we have an unruly boy in need of taming?" As usual, Silk is nothing if not apropos.

"Yeah. Keep the exit hidden until he's healed. And if he tries to get up..." Pause for effect. "...Destroy him."

"Don't leave me here!" He tries to leap off the bed, but not before said bed sprouts arms and grabs him.

You're impressed that Silk can actually hold him down. Of course, he's probably not using his full strength, nor is he in his top form, but still.

"If you survive Silk for two days, I promise I'll be your wingman next time you try and find a girlfriend." You tease him.

"You can't be a wingman!" He protests, struggling as Silk slithers on top of him. "You're not a man!"

"And if you don't play along, I guarantee I'll steal EVERY girlfriend you'll ever make." You add.

That shut him up.

Satisfied with your bullying and psychological terrorism (it's all for his own good, though!), you walk out. The doors of Silk's real slam heavily behind you, cutting your brother's anguished screams short.

They're pretty attractive, although they're only a half-sister. So yeah, I would. In comparison the orgy feels weird, I don't know anyone nor know how attractive they are nor really feeling attached enough to any of them to actually fuck them either.

Sorry to continue with a subject you want closed, but would you be willing to include incest of that kind, depending on how the story goes, or is it essentially perma-banned?

I'll actually go look this up now since I'm a bit curious, I can't remember many details, but I know we spent at almost a month after the fae assault preparing out sailors for the Lintha and then a week getting Pyre ready for Peleps, and then we spent some time in the Titan.

I find it unlikely but not impossible. Maka and Karas grew up together and don't feel any particular sexual attraction for each other. But I don't liek absolutes wither. It's Exalted, almost anything could happen.

Having finally dealt with your restless brother, you make the point of the situation. It's late morning, and everything is moving along like a well-oiled machine without any need for your input, which means you're free to deal with more important matters.

You walk back down to the courtyard, where Tia is helping a group of mortal workers move a massive, perfectly square block of white marble, with a side of easily two meters. Actually, yeah, it's more like she's lugging it around while the workers, masons and engineers, just follow her, giving her directions on were to bring it.

They seem to have gotten used to this sort or thing, or just... to accept it. They stand close enough to be utterly crushed if Tia dropped it, apparently confident enough that it will not happen.

Tia has been working lugging impossibly heavy things for days, and, to the best of your knowledge, didn't sleep or eat. Even more amazingly, she didn't have one of her sudden fits of loneliness, or maybe is just getting better at controlling them.

She doesn't seem to have one bead of sweat on her, and is fresh as if she had just woken up from a restful sleep. She seems to be a bit more buff than her normal form, with wiry but visible muscles peeking up from under her skin and her tight clothing, probably either a subconscious change she did on her body because of all the heavy lifting, or the effect of some persistent charm.

To her merit, she actually finishes her work and drops down the stone (maybe a bit too abruptly) even after she sees you, before just flash-stepping up to you as soon as her hands are free.

Maybe doing so without thinking, by muscle memory after all that work, she grabs you by the hips and lifts you up above her head, holding you up like a trophy.

"MAKA!" She screams.

You pat her hands, trying to gently get her to put you down.

You put your hand on Tia's head (she is now a bit taller than usual, but still a bit shorter than you), and gently ruffle her hair. She closes her eyes and lean closer, making you feel for a moment like you're petting a cat.

She gently closes you in a hug, and the workers take the hint and discreetly leave the area.

Felling this shapeshifting murder machine nuzzling up to you, and feeling her slender arms, fully capable of ripping buildings to ribbons, gently wrap you in a tender hug, makes you shiver with thrill. You gently lift up her chin with a finger and kiss her on the lips.

At this point, a normal person would get on her tiptoes, you guess. Tia just grows another little bit taller to match up with you and sustains the kiss you initiated, forcefully, aggressively.

You recognize this mood, and cheerfully let her do as she pleases with you. She definitely deserved it, and you know you're going to enjoy every second of it as much as she will.

She doesn't break anything, fortunately. She knows it's not the time to go all-out. However, you feel the strain in her muscles as she tries her best to control herself. To not completely lose herself in the passion.

Once she's done, not because she's spent or satisfied (very far from it), but just because she decided it's enough for now, You just spend some time together, sprawled on the ground, staring at the sky still visible in he gaps in the roof above you.

"...We should go and visit the Tyrant again." You break the silence.

You can immediately feel her mood drop, even though she says nothing.

"I know you don't like her."

"I don't hate her." She replies. "But... She's a bad person. And reminds me of bad things."

Some more silence, both of you waiting for a cloud to disappear and that little corner of sky you can see to be blue again.

"I'll carry you if you want."

>Yes, please.
>Just bring me. You don't have to stay as well.

She was, that's what the counter-seduce option was for.
>>
"Just bring me. You don't have to stay as well" You ask her.

"...Thank you." She gives you a quick kiss.

You're still both sprawled on the ground, and it does take a bit of willpower for both of you to work up the energy to stand back up and prepare. Once you're done, though, Tia shifts in her vulture form and gives you a powerful lift up to the Dark Omen.

The large airship has parked itself on the hills north of Tianna. All around it, trees and grass have died. That doesn't surprise you in the least.

You drop off on a small space that is sort of a balcony the top level of the Dark Omen has, leading more or less directly to the Tyrant's chambers.

You didn't announce yourself, but you're fairly sure that they must've seen you approaching.

Entering the room, you feel the temperature drop by several degrees as a sort of light feeling of numbness spreads over your body, like being bathed in veils of silk.

However, like the first time you met her, the most bizarre thing you feel is perhaps the sensation of being perfectly at ease and comfortable, despite everything.

The Tyrant of the Doomsday Machine is sitting on her monumental iron throne, looking down at you with an expressionless face. No one else in the room, no servants, no attendants, no Exalted,

"Maka." She welcomes you, with her cold, empty, machine-like voice.

You bow politely to her and you're delighted to see her do likewise.

Then, a few seconds of heavy, clumsy, awkward silence ensue. Only your breathing and heartbeat fill the large, empty steel room.

"He's coming." She then says, abruptly.

"The Prince's fleet? Our scouts lost it in a storm, two days from here." You inform her. "Do you know anything?"

"I'm not talking about the fleet. I'm talking about him." She repeats.

You feel your blood turn to ice in your veins.

"You mean... the Prince himself?"

She nods heavily. "The Silver Prince. The Bodhisattva Anointed by Dark Water. He's with the fleet."

"How do you know?" You have to ask.

"Some of the ghosts of the dead seamen on the splinter fleet taken by your brother have been collected by my agents." She informs you.

COLLECTED. She talks about them like they're not even alive.

Well, okay. They aren't, technically. But it still feels wrong.

"You didn't torture them, I hope."

"No. Of course not." You breathe a sigh of relief. "I have servants doing that for me." Aaaand stuck in your throat.

>>
>>40097043
Horizon to Horizon is kinda like it in it's current form, yeah. HtH before was more of an active charm, which is why I was wondering what EF's opinion on changing that charm over to here would be like.
>>
>>40097016
That sounds hilarious.
Do it.
>>
>>40097057
>>40097097
So, in the context of this quest's system, you basically just want an upgrade to Horizon to Horizon that lets it trigger under additional circumstances.

Would that be accurate?
>>
>>40097016
Another?
>>
>>40097121
It's active special AoE attack with more bonuses. I wouldn't mind it, personally, but it needs to be touched by EF first.
>>
>>40097011
>>40097043
Yeah it's more or less an upgrade of Horizon to Horizon. I'd probably make it change HtH by lowering the interval to one week rather than make it a direct attack. Which is probably stronger but fuck it, at this point Maka's a complete social steamroller so let's just go for broke.

Or it could be a high-cost Performance charm that involves Maka dressing up as an idol and doing a full song and dance routine, and works as an active Performance attack that can be comboed with other charms and targets an entire region.

Which is more of a hassle to do, and will see far less use, but is amusing.

Honestly I'd prefer to see it as something more that could help us change cultures. For example if we used it at Skullstone we'd forcibly be changing the culture in the theme of our performance, along with enhancing all our social attacks permanently to inspire Maka-related creations and maka related things.
