The Red Lady grasps at your shoulder to steady out both her breathing and posture before exhaling loudly, she’s obviously a bit winded from what she just witnessed. You did just scare off a primordial being with….unorthodox tactics.

You wouldn’t really describe it as a tactic…or as “scaring off”. But hey, a win is a win.

“Let’s try this one last time, Spike.”

What weapon shall you select? Choose to inspect

>You are Steven "Spike" Bloom: buzzed, grouchy, and down-and -out Middle-Aged man.

>You woke up today passed out at the counter of your favorite, hated, local joint on a Wednesday. Pushed the drinks a bit too hard for your age after losing your job for the past few years.

>You approach a strange woman from across the bar, the Lady wearing a cloak of Deep Maroon. Her eyes were golden.

>"Telling" us our fortune, making us mighty anxious and uncomfortable, and calling us an old guy, we decided to politely tell her to Piss off....

>Only to realize the bar is no more. Unaware, you and the booth you were in had been displaced to a cathedral of sorts.

>Here the Red Lady revealed herself as your "Muse" and as your opportunity to "edit" the "written story"

>You also nearly got your ass killed by a primordial being of pure dark, Tenebrous. It thinks you're funny in a stabby-stabby kind of way.

>You're too old for this shit

>Who IS the Red Lady? Why does she want 'Spike" Bloom? What did she see in those cards?

>The Deep Blue Muse, holding a double headed axe

You approach the Blue Muse, as it is sitting in one of the few, remaining, not-destroyed-to-splinters pews in the cathedral. The Muse seems wholly unaffected by the battle, enduring, and unmovable. It’s like it the Muse had been sitting there all along, despite the fact it was one of the first to act when the beast, Tenebrous, had you pinned in that seething corner; you had seen the Blue Muse also in the heat of the fighting after you had escaped from the shadow’s clutches.

Next to the Muse, you spot it. A Double-Headed axe, roughly 5 feet in high. The Bladed head spans a width of about 2 feet itself, while the thick metal cylinder and grip of the weapon is about 8 inches in diameter. It looks rather hefty, but as you get closer you feel static in the air, tingling the hair on your hair and skin on your arms. Designs of arcing lighting race up and down it’s grey shaft in neon, pulsing glue runic molds, ending in a pure white handle of pearl.

The Blue Hood of the Muse turns to you when you sit down in the sturdy, surviving pew next to it.
You can only see two golden eyes observing you -steadfast and unwavering- from underneath it.

“The Chaac Axe, the remnant of a long-forgotten Thunder God,” An unwavering, thick voice answers your intended question.

Strange, this voice sounded distinctly American. Not that you were ever a gambling man…your luck hasn’t exactly been great if recent events are any indication.

"What? The cards?" She accompanies with an incredulous look. "Why?"

Bitch don't give papa that lip. I may be old, but I ain't blind; I saw that shit you pulled back there.

"Just curious" You smile back

(There are 78 cards in deck. Images, sounds, and experiences flash through you mind and you touch each card individually. Strangely enough, you notice some of the pictures on the cards roughly match the designs depicted on the stained glass)

>PEWPEWPEW

You can't help but look longing at old 'Remy lying on the ground there. You still shoot a demonic deity in the face with him, though he doesn't have much fire to spit with.

You could maybe work something out with the Muses? After all the trouble you went through, after all, maybe they'd be more pliable towards the idea.

>The Orange Muse, holding an exotic weapon

Rising from your oaken seat, you go to your next target.

The bright, gaudy, orange one pacing around the huddled green and silver Muses.

As you trot on over to the Muse, you note that its demeanor is a LOT more relaxed than the others. It has its hands together, over its head and you hear a jovial little whistling tune as you get nearer. The Muse sees you coming and lightly jogs over to meet you. The hood remains firmly immobile when he’s running. Well that just looks strange, step up your game, physics.

“Ah, yes, the weapon!” A voice practically drowning in masculinity and hispanic (think Zorro) accent greets you.

The Muse pulls out…Is that literally a black stick? That shit ain’t no weapon, bruh.

The Muse hands it to you. If you could see its face, you would say it had a MASSIVE hopeful, expectant look.

“Go on, give it a spin, now. Don’t be shy!” The Muse chides

You start the motion as if you’re swinging the thing. Man, this Muse is kind of a scru-
WOAH.

The stick “opens up”, revealing an elaborate Fan the width of your torso, with a height nearly equal to that of your outstretched arm. You feel a refreshing, loving breeze welcome the room. Depicted on it are masterwork murals of ships mid—wreck, Eagles in flight, and Hurricanes in the ocean.

"Tāwhirimātea"
"Whir for short” The Muse declares proudly.

>Gold Muse's Large Sword

You approach one of the larger Muses of more stalwart build, Goldie over there.

He's sitting down, cross-legged after the battle, his robe is stained slightly with black ink (blood?) and torn slightly. Underneath, you see rippling muscle. He looks at you and you can see a single, golden eye staring through you. It looks like the other is covered by something.

"May I see your sword?"

He doesn't give a verbal response, but rather hefts it up fro where it rested on the ground next to him and keeps in upright for you to inspect.

It's slightly curved, yet purposefully jagged in design while remaining a single, solid, flowing edge. You cannot identify the metal. It is huge, yet when you try to lift it, its impossibly light for its size. Still somewhat heavy though.

As you give it back to Goldie, you notice a blue sheen and aura misting around the blade itself. Runes are inscribed about the handle.

"Zantetsuken" The single word from the Muse cuts through the air

You spin a full 180, and head back towards the crimson altar on its purple carpet, stain glass artwork of the Final Judgement, the Apocalypse, overwatching the scene before it in the Cathedral.

Something is nagging at you, something doesn’t seem right. You’ve been through too much business back in the…”Real World”(?) to know when there’s a catch.

"What do you get, Muses, if I pick your favor? I doubt you there isn’t SOME motive here, a horse you have in this race." You call out while looking at the Etched Fire in the foreboding glass.

It is The Red Lady who answers.

“We have the opportunity to change the written story ourselves, how we see fit. Normally, such a control is beyond us. We are merely recorders and inspiration for humanity’s actions. Yet,”

There is a brief pause in the explanation, before you feel a firm hand on your shoulder. The Red Lady stands next to you on the purple carpet, dissecting the stain glass as you are.

“With you, we gain the powers of those above us. If even for a short time, we may change the fates. We can control reality alongside you, shifting it to be better than where it has diverted.”

She turns to face you,

“We were once human too you know,” A look of sadness is visible in her eyes.

Unable to change one’s future, to make one’s own actions, unable to stop an event.
Feeling powerless, having something taken from you.
Have the Muses ran this gauntlet as well?

You’d lost your wife a decade prior…and something even more with her. Nobody, not even a Muse, should feel the pain of loss. The burning apathy as your humanity erases, despite what you want, against your wishes. No, there are some things you can’t allow to happen again, you won’t. If this is what editing the written story means….

“I’ll take the shotgun, Red.”

She contorts into a look of blatant disappointment, her red cowl cocked to the side as her face clearly speaks volumes, specifically stuff around the lines of “What the Hell are you doing” and “We already discussed how it doesn’t have ammo” and “You’re an idiot”. Her eyes follow your face as you motion to move past her….

Grabbing the deck of cards out of her hand as you do.
She blinks twice as you continue ambling towards the shotgun and the crowd of other Muses.

“H-HEY! Those are mine! What do you think you’re doing??!” She calls out, utterly flustered after finally processing the sleight of hand you just pulled.

(1/2)
>>
Lightly jogging over (with Red chasing behind you, nearly tripping over her own maroon adornment twice) to the major grouping of Muses in the main plaza of the cathedral where the man of shadow was only a few minutes prior, you reach your intended target and squat down to pick up the Remington Shotgun.

Oh sweet baby, papa is home. Don’t worry about that little mishap earlier, mistakes happen, okay?

“If you think you can just waltz off after taking my tar-“ Red starts to bluster as she catches up with you, when you interrupt her

“Hey guys!” you call out to the large group of Muses, their Green, Silver, Orange, and Pink hoods swivel to face their caller.

“Got some ammo?” You openly call when you feel something moving behind you. Damn, here she comes….

But instead of Red, it’s the Gold Muse who approaches you and takes the cobalt steel of the gun in his hands and out of yours, pondering it.

“No bullets, young one” The Muse says paternally in his deep, thunderous, yet calm voice.
“It can be adapted, however. You may use minor magic in conjunction with such a tool” The Muse speaks as it turns the modern weapon over in its hands.

“Or, you may reconstruct it as a beacon, of sorts.” It looks at you, “You may use it to call one of us in a time of need”

"Hm. A fair point, young warrior." The Golden Muse thinks out loud.

"The Red Lady once mentioned us Muses were once humans ourselves. This is true for all of us. For our inhuman lives and exploits, we were elevated to an inhuman stature and identity."

"Our names and legends may still be familiar in your lands," The Muse comments while his hands reach towards his hood, pulling it back.

A middle-aged, powerful face stares into yours with a single, fearless golden eye. A black bird suddenly flies from the rafters in a steep dive, fluttering inches away from His shoulder before perching on it.

It's a raven.

It's nipping on the inscribed black leather eye patch covering the giant man's other eye.

Yeah.
Yeah, you’ve heard of Odin before. Just a few times. No biggie.

On a scale of 1 to 10, you think the inner child inside you just shit himself in pure, unfiltered excitement. Thank god you’re in your late forties and not your eighties, otherwise you may have joined him by accident.

Everything is silent in the Hollow Halls, as the beings and perhaps even the building itself await patiently, expectantly on your decision. It is as if the world itself waits on bated breath.
No pressure.

“So,” you start.

Everyone noticeably leans in a little bit.

“I guess ‘how’s it hanging’ would be a bad conversation starter.”

You hear a chuckle from the Blue and Green Muses and the entire room seemingly deflates in response to your offhand remark.

“I wouldn’t say so, child,” Odin replies. A smirk broadly carving its path across his stony feature. The bird chirps in accordance.
“The mechanism is simple,” Red sighs as she clampers across the lengthy tile between the two of you,” You pick a Muse, said Muse infuses the gun with ritualistic magic necessary to summon it, temporarily that is. “

Remember that little kid from a minute ago? The one that defecated in excitement?

You are fist fighting him SO HARD to keep a straight face. You had an ace up your sleeve. Red, for all her seer prowess, had missed one tiny, detail.

After getting out of the military, you and the buddies took a vacation to the shining city of lights itself, Vegas. There, you realized that while your luck wasn’t fantastic (it sucked, actually)….your sleight of hand, the talent you took for granted for so long, was beyond exemplary.
It was untraceable.

You went for a vacation, and you made a short career of robbing casinos through methods which they just couldn’t track. For a month, you were untouchable. Then they booted you; the winning from your escapade funding the starting of your own private business.

Point of the story being, you were a damn good card shark.

“Well, how about we check? Pick a card, honey,” you managed to keep a straight face as you spread the thick, layered cards of the 78-count deck in a swift movement.

She isn’t even trying to hide her scowl of pure “Are you fucking kidding me,” painted across her features.
“That’s not how they word, trickster,” she chides as she angrily swipes a card in a wide, sweeping movement of her arm. The red of her cowl and cloak flutter in contrast to her grimacing face, as if t were just shrugging.

>nat 20 (Complete, utter success. Something changes/happens)

The shit-eating grin can’t hold back any longer. You feel the burning of your jaw, throat, and chest as you struggle, and fail to contain the force of pure, unadulterated SMUG within your head and off the premises of your face.

“Is THIS, “ you spontaneous shout in a dramatic fashion, arm shooting out in front of you as it seemingly snags the top card of the tarot deck in a passionate, flaring movement while your hand holding the deck pulls back to your hip, cradling the deck. Your feet pivot, annnnd….

A FUCKING FIREBALL shoots out of your outstretched hand containing the card; the jet stream of pure heat blazing past the Red’s head, her eyes wide in pure “Oh shit” shock. You would say her life flashes before her eyes, but considering she’s a divine being….
The entire crowd of Muses: jump when you FIRE AWAY, cringe as the firball- the size of a globe- bursts upon the farther, adjacent wall across the cathedral in a vaguely dome-shaped explosion a meter in diameter, and strike right back to you, golden eyes full of confusion.

Red looks like she’s about to have a heart attack.

“….your card?” You finish strongly, smiling confidently as you flash- what you know is- the card she selected.
The Red Lady looks in pure disbelief at what you just did. Yep, you still got it.

The Red Lady gets up slowly. Along with the flagrant disbelief, you also see a bit of admiration and pride. She's impressed.

"Well, looks like you have at least a small idea how magic works. Mostly through raw experience and emotions, which it looks like you have in spades to start."

"The tarot deck is merely a tool, a method of channeling talent, a medium. It gives you the ability and method, but latent talent and aptitude are something else entirely." She starts to trail off towards the end, her eyes still wide with shock. Her maroon garb is singed a bit now at the edges of her hood and you smell burnt cotton. Odin's raven, Muninn, squaks with surprise and flies over to Red and perches on her shoulder, chirping. Apparently, it just noticed the scene; it had been preening its feathers indifferently to the conversation at hand moments prior.

"Magic comes with the package, Spike. You'll develop it over time naturally,, though you can practice in hopes of something specific. However, the cards are the challenge to master. They each will have a different effect in certain situations." She returns to her normal smoldering, incisive stare.

"Also a part of this deal....well, I'll let you figure that one out."
"For now, which of," She spreads her arms in a motion towards the group surrounding you,"these fine spirits of virtues do you wish to set on standby for when trouble calls?"

If it is Abraham Lincoln and I'm not being stupid, I have to point out the Lincoln didn't have a thick voice
He had a semi-high pitched, squeaky, and southern-country accented voice

You’ve been through some shit today, Steve, you think to yourself. After we talk to the crazy historic people talking about stories, gods, and magic, papa can grab one last jack and coke, head straight to bed.

All this talk about mythologies, demons attacking you, and tarot fortunes would make for a great story, you think. She would have laughed.

At least, but not anymore.

You make a quick pivot to face Odin, holding out the empty Remington outstretched in your hands. The steels shines in welcome for what is to come.
You don’t think it has shot out a Norse God before.

“You, me,’ you quip, pointing to the Zantetsuken still stuck in the marble floor, “We’re cutting shit up.”

Odin openly blares a smile as the Raven, Muninn, glides back to his shoulder. With a flutter of its black wings, it drops something in his hand….is that the empty shotgun shell from earlier? What’s that supposed to d-
“OH CHRIST MY EYES,” you accidently burst as a bright flash of golden light emblazons the entire room.

("Hey, watch the name in vain!" you hear the smooth voice of Galahad contest)

“WHY DIDN’T YOU WARN ME,” you yelp towards the Muse in front of you, feeling quite betrayed as you still feel a tingling sensation behind your eyes. Is it possible for eyes to be sunburned? Cause yours are.

“Sorry, only have one,” Odin volleys nonchalantly as the shining blaze stops.

You tentatively open your eyes to a Shotgun shell held out in an open palm of the Norse Muse.

The intense, golden light seems to be contained in a bubble where the shot and slug normally would have been. It is as if the light itself was condensed and contained, yet without sacrificing any of it’s golden, painful, shine. You flinch away from the sight of it quickly, looks like you’re not gonna need that Lasik anymore. The shell feels warm to the touch as you load it into the chamber of your Remington.

“I, Odin, Patron of Valor, Decision, Fatherhood, and Leaders, shall be your ally in your desperate hour,” He declares with pride.

You hear the Red Lady give an exaggerated sigh from next to you.

“Now that the little bromance is over, let’s cut to the chase- The story.” Her tone getting serious as her leather boots tap against the marble flooring around you.

“We are patrons of various virtues, we are Muses. It’s the nature we were given.” She paces around you.

“We record, we inspire, we watch. We cannot write ourselves. The written story, fate as we know it (and you experience it) has been altered continuously for millennia. Our stories, our intended tales have turned to tragedy or horrible, grotesque caricatures or perversions. We are witnesses to this effect, through the histories.”

“This, as we learned, is all sourced with you. In a previous existence, a previous life in the cycle…you changed something, somehow.”
“How you did this is not clear to me. Yet what was, “ she pulls out the blank card, “is this. There was no bank card in my deck, Steven. Your time to edit, to right the mistakes and wrongs of the past has come. Will you herald a new age of virtue, will you write a happy ending to your own tragedy? Or, will you doom us all to oblivion?”

Well, no pressure.

Ay this a pretty good quest, and this comin' from someone who thinks most quests are shit
And if I'd make a suggestion, plan some stuff out m8, just general things, not too specific, because if you make it too specific, you can accidentally railroad, and if you don't plan, it can go off the tracks, in a bad way.
