When last we left our hero, the Earthrealm-born and lightning-wielding Akayama Kaito, and his three compaions, the tarkatan Tortek, the demon assassin Sareena and the Outworld-native sphinx Turana, he was lost in Outworld and getting involved with an ongoing war between the conquering legions of Outworld's Emperor, Shao Kahn, and the local villages who refuse to submit to his rule. His allies in this, the local villages led by the warrior woman Yanake of the recently-destroyed village Tianshou, have banded together to march north to aid in the liberation of a walled city currently under siege by a man named Gozen, the tactician leading the Emperor's forces in this region. This city, Xun-Koto, is nearly ready to give in to the invaders.

But with Kaito helping to clear the scout camps of the Emperor's forces, Yanake and her people, a force of about two-hundred, can bring food, water and other supplies to the city if they can get a way inside. As their warband makes camp for the evening, Yanake unveils a map of the city and the region.

"With the path to the north secured, we can make it to the city walls. But the Emperor's forces outnumber us at least three-to-one, and the spirit of the warriors within the city walls must be weary at best. The city has two entrances, both of them kept under constant watch by the Emperor's legions; no one goes in or out. That leaves few options for us."

Kaito looks back at his companions, specifically at the size-altering sphinx, Turana. "We can have Turana grow large and fly some of us over the city walls," he suggests.

"That's one option. Another option is to go below."

Kaito raises a brow. "Below? Dig?"

"No. There exists a cave system that the enemy may not yet know about. The city has used it to send brave scouts to the people south in order to bring news, but the entrances are near enemy territory. We would not be able to sneak a large force into the city this way, but a small group might go unseen."

"And our next option?"

"A direct attack. We cut into the enemy lines, hope the city joins us, find Gozen and break him. Ridding the enemy of their tactician would leave a great gaping hole in their defenses. A small force could also attempt sneaking into the enemy camp and assassinating him."

"Well, we do have an assassin with us," Kaito says, looking back at Sareena.

"You have not lead us wrong, Kaito. I will trust whatever your judgment in this matter is."

"I think we should keep a low profile. Sneak a few people in, see what the situation in the city is, how desperate they're getting."

Kaito looks out of the tent and spies Sareena nearby, keeping watch.

"Sareena is an assassin. She'll make a good scout."

Before Yanake can reply, there is a sound coming from the edge of the camp; shouts and calls for someone to halt. Yanake and Kaito's eyes meet and they both share the same thought: has the enemy found them?

They rush out of the tent and towards the source of the commotion. Sareena, Tortek and Turana follow. There, archers and spearmen are pointing their weapons at a robed figure approaching the camp.

"HALT! HALT YOUR ADVANCE, I SAY!" one of the guards shouts.

The figure then stops and raises his head. From the silhouette of the man, he must be at least six and a half feet tall, with broad shoulders.

"I seek a warrior among you!" he bellows in a voice that Kaito finds familiar. "He who wields lightning!"

Kaito looks back at the others before stepping out of the crowd. "My name is Akayama Kaito. Do I know you?"

The figure tears away his robe. "YOU SHOULD, WORM! I AM ROKURO! AND OUR BATTLE IS UNFINISHED!"

"Crap," Kaito mutters to himself as the figure is revealed.

Yanake approaches from behind. "You know this beast?"

"I kinda threw him off of his mountain a few days ago and he might be a little angry about it," Kaito tells her.

Rokuro digs his feet into the ground and tenses up. "I CHALLENGE YOU! BEFORE THE ELDER GODS, THE VICTOR SHALL BE DECIDED! NO INTERRUPTIONS OR FRIENDS THIS TIME! ONLY YOU AND I!"

At those words, the warriors under Yanake all lower their weapons and stand at the ready. Kaito realizes that they respect the call to one-on-one kombat.

"You must answer his challenge," Yanake tells him.

"I must, eh?" Kaito replies, remembering the beating he took last time, having only overcome Rokuro due to Sareena's help, as much as he didn't want to admit it.

"Come forth and face your death!" the warrior shouts.

"My people may lose faith in you if you deny this challenge," she says.

Kaito sighs and prepares himself for this newest battle. "So be it," he whispers, moving forward. Around them both, the warriors and his friends form a circle in the flat ground, forming their arena. Rokuro stands tall and strong, ready to fight. Kaito places a foot backward and raises his hands, getting into a comfortable fighting position. A bead of sweat drips off of his forehead.

"I must warn you, Rokuro, I've become much stronger than when last we fought. Can you say the same?"

"Good," the large man-beast replies, "I would hate for you to die too easily. I already know that I am stronger than you. I want to break you, bit by bit, and show to all that I am the strongest there is!"

Kaito narrows his eyes a bit. There's something deeper to his words, hidden behind pride. "What do you have to prove? Who are you trying to show your worth to?"

Rokuro grits his teeth and swats the notion aside with a flick of his arm. "I need no one to prove anything to, human! Enough talk! Now is the time for battle!"

Rokuro roars and charges in.

Rokuro, however, leaps over the bolt in a surprising display of speed and agility, landing in front of Kaito. Keeping his momentum, he rams his shoulder into the human, knocking him to the ground.

"Get up," Rokoru says, stepping back, "that I may knock you back down again."

Kaito attempts a dodge, but is too late! Rokuro plants both feet on his chest, knocking the wind out of him and possibly cracking a rib. Kaito is flung backwards, where he is caught by the crowd and held up until he can stand.

Rokuro gets up to his feet with a smile as Kaito tries to catch his breath, his eyes wide and his throat gasping for air.

"Your kind is so brittle, so weak, so pathetic!" he says, holding out his arms. "Even one such as you, gifted with power of the storm, cannot stop me!"

Kaito manages to calm his breathing and stop the throbbing in his head. His chest is in great pain, but he's not out of the fight yet. He spits up some blood and rubs his chest as he advances back into the ring.

"Ready... ready for round two?" he asks, holding up his fists.

Rokuro is all too happy to oblige. "You first," he invites, utterly confident in his strength. "Go on. Give me everything you can."

Kaito charges in, using his Bloody Fist style as best he can. With lightning-fast punches, he slams his fists into Rokuro's chest again and again. Kaito attempts to land a solid fist on the beast-man's junk, but he appears to be wearing some kind of hard leather codpiece. He switches back to punching, kicking and clawing at his torso, shouting as he does, as it feels like he is punching a solid wall. Rokuro is unmoved by his attempts and smirks.

He grabs Kaito by the neck with his left hand and lifts him up, holding back his right and curling it into a fist. "Any last words, you pathetic wretch?"

>>40118099

"Y-yeah... I got a couple... How... how insecure are you, exactly? You have to come here... to try and finish me... just because you can't stand the idea of someone out there stronger than you...?"

His eyes narrow. "Your words are as hollow as your skull will be in a moment, human."

Kaito smirks as a thin line of blood emerges from the corner of his mouth. "Sure... and then what? You gonna challenge the Emperor? The Elder Gods? Eventually... you'll fall for good..." Kaito manages to laugh at Rokuro, despite the pain in his chest. "You call me pathetic, but--"

Kaito sees Rokuro about to punch his head off and raises up both arms. He charges them with sonic thunder energy and slams them onto the sides of his opponent's head, unleashing a boom of thunder that even makes people in the crowd tremble.

Rokuro shouts in pain, closing his eyes and dropping Kaito to the ground. Both of his hands clamp down over his ears and he stumbles backwards, tripping over a rock and landing on his back. Kaito attempts to leap atop Rokuro, but the beast-man strikes out wildly, with reckless abandon. Kaito manages to dodge out of the way, but cannot get in past his foe's wild and animalistic defenses. Kaito watches as Rokuro continues to stumble forward, not sure of how long this disorientation will last. He knows he has to make every second of it count.

As the large creature swings his arms, Kaito goes for an opening and rolls between his legs. He kicks out with one leg, hitting Rokuro in the back of the knee, forcing him down onto it. Then, he kicks the other, bringing him down on both knees. Finally, he puts all of his strength into kicking Rokuro in the back, putting him down face-first in the dirt.

As Kaito gets up, he sees Rokuro preparing to do the same.

Kaito hits the ground rolling and gets on his feet as Rokuro does the same. The large beast-man is still somewhat dazed, but can now focus a bit more clearly. Both of them are roughed up a bit, Kaito being the one who is worse off, but that stunning attack rattled Rokuro's brain quite fiercely.

He growls, "You are a wily one... I thought you would be dead by now."

"Don't count me out yet," Kaito replies, holding up his fists. "I can still get back up, no matter how many times you try to knock me down."

Rokuro actually chuckles a bit, perhaps finding a liking for his opponent. "Then let this be the last."

Rokuro manages to stand up straight and looks towards the crowd. "Water...!" he calls out.

A moment later, a jug of water is brought out to the two kombatants, along with two wooden cups. Rokuro pours his own, then Kaito's, and hands it to him.

"Drink," he invites. "I'll kill you afterwards."

"Pleasant," Kaito says, rubbing his forehead and downing the cup in one gulp. He winces slightly at the pain in his chest.

Kaito looks at him closely, seeing his brown, mottled skin. "You know, I've only seen that kind of skin once before, on a shokan. You wouldn't happen to be half-shokan, would you?"

Rokuro stops drinking and stares at Kaito. "That seems too clever for a mere guess."

"So it's true, then," Kaito says with a whistle. "I've seen two shokan, both at the Mortal Kombat tournament. A female, and Goro."

Now, Kaito has Rokuro's attention. "You have seen Goro?"

"Sure. Maybe. I can't promise that. But if you're against Goro, you're against whomever he serves, right?"

The next day, Kaito and the warband continues the march north, now with Rokuro walking amongst their ranks.

Yanake looks at the half-shokan and then back to Kaito.

"Are you certain he can be trusted?"

"He's looking for a fight, he just needs to be pointed in the right direction," Kaito replies. "Once we win this battle and stop the siege, then he might become a problem again, if he survives."

They come to a large hill that Kaito, Yanake, Sareena and several of Yanake's stealthier warriors scale.

Beyond in a valley lies a large city, surrounded by a great, high wall. Xun-Koto. Numerous camps surrounding burning fires are placed all along it, each home to many warriors. Roving scouts march along the perimeter. The sun is currently just about to set over the bleak, purple horizon.

"Their forces seem spread rather thinly," Kaito observes.

"Perhaps, but even a third of their force matches ours in number," Yanake replies.

"So, where's this cave we talked about?"

Yanake nods towards one of the nearby mountains. "The cave is at the foot of the mountain, hidden by rocks. I know the way in. But we will need to be careful."

"This route is not without potential dangers," she warns. "These caves are sometimes home to terrible beasts."

"Well, nobody said it would be easy," Kaito shrugs.

Sure enough, several minutes of traversing the caverns later, and a great growl reaches their ears. They come upon a chamber with a sleeping beast between them and the way forward. The great, rancor-like beast slumbers in a sitting position, near a pile of bones picked clean and chewed through.

Success! The group manages to get by the sleeping Tormentor without rousing it. As the last of them slip by, Yanake continues to lead them towards the city. After a short while, they begin to see light at the other end of the tunnel.

When they emerge, they are within the city wall, beneath an overgrowth of a large tree that hides the cave mouth. They must crouch or crawl to get out.

"We must go to the city's leadership," Yanake says. "They are in dire need of good news."

They travel the streets. Kaito sees many people that look starved, wounded or ill. This siege has taken its toll on the population. At the heart of the city lies a large palace, and at its entrance, two armed guards with polearms stop them. "Halt! State your identity!"

"I am Yanake, and I speak for the people of the south. We have come bearing reinforcements and supplies. I must speak with your leader!"

The two guards look at each other and nod. They raise their weapons and stand aside. Yanake thanks them and walks up the stairs to the main doors.

Kaito spares a look at one of the guards, noticing distinct facial tattoos around his eyes. What could that mean?

At the top of the stairs, the palace doors open.

As Yanake and the others enter, they find the main entry hall and the council room empty.

Yanake seems confused. "What? Where is the council? I don't--"

The palace doors slam behind them.

"The council is gone, because their heads are adorning the spikes around the city," a voice reaches their ears.

From the shadows around the room emerges several dark-clad warriors. Behind the throne walks out a rather thin warrior, clad in a maroon vest, with tattoos around his eyes. He carries two thin hammers with long handles. His belt bears a flap in the front that shows the symbol of the Brotherhood of the Shadow.

"Gozen!" Yanake shouts.

The wiry tactician bows.

"How long has this 'siege' gone on, exactly?" Kaito asks.

"It ended this morning, when we killed the council. They buckled and agreed to a meeting. Their last mistake. My men outside are preparing to march south. My guard at the gate tells me that your forces are here? Good. Once they are dealt with, the southern territories will have no defenses."

Suddenly, Sareena advances. "My Brother of Shadow," she says with a bow. "I am Sareena. I have led them here to you."

Kaito's eyes widen as he hears these words. She turns to face him and winks.

Kaito keeps his mouth shut as Sareena walks up to Gozen. "Their army is not expecting an attack. This one," she points to Kaito, "is their true leader. Ignore the woman, she means nothing. Your force outnumbers their own. Their army lies to the west, only a day's march."

Gozen smiles. "You have done well, Sareena. Our lord will be pleased, as will the Emperor."

Kaito listens closely. If Gozen does not truly belong to the Emperor, then who? And why does he lead the Emperor's men?

"Take them to the dungeon," Gozen orders his men.

Kaito gets one last look from Sareena before he is taken from the room. She wears a strange smile, and she seems to mouth "Trust me" before leaving.

Once within the dungeon, everyone is given a separate cell. Here, people who helped defend the city languish behind bars, left to die.

Kaito sits and thinks. He knows Sareena lied about the location of the army, saying that they lie to the west, rather than the south... So what's the next step of her plan?

He learns rather quickly as a shuriken is thrown into one of the guard's throats. Sareena dashes out of the shadows and impales a second one in the neck with a kunai before throwing it into the eyesocket of a third.

She approaches the bars of Kaito's cell, swinging the keys from a guard along a slender finger. "I told you," she says with a wink.

After freeing Yanake and her men, they go on to free the other prisoners. They gang up on any remaining guards and then group up.

Yanake looks at Sareena. "I have to admit, I wasn't sure you'd come through for us. Now we have a chance to take the city."

She shrugs. "I'm full of surprises. Their army is already marching west, chasing the wind."

Yanake looks at Kaito. "What's our next move?"

"First thing's first, we need to get our army in the city. We can retake it, fortify it and get the supplies to any remaining loyal soldiers. Make for the city gate closest to our men."

Yanake nods and takes her soldiers with her. Kaito looks at Sareena. "He was with the Brotherhood of the Shadow. Gozen. Does that mean he serves Quan Chi? Shinnok?"

"All in the Brotherhood of Shadow serve Shinnok. I cannot say for certain that he serves Quan Chi. I have never met him before, but he trusted me enough."

Kaito puts his hand on her shoulder. "You really came through for us. Now, I need you to go back through the caves and alert our forces to head for the gate."

She nods and smiles before heading off, vanishing into the shadows.

S'all good bro

>>40121344

Kaito runs up into the palace in search of Gozen. He avoids patrols of the guards and makes his way up the stairs into the throne room. It is empty.

Looking around and searching the floors, he comes to a large balcony. Gozen is there, overlooking the city.

"I don't know if it's arrogance or stupidity that has you standing there alone," Kaito says, looking at the man as he turns around. "But this war ends here and now."

Gozen straightens. "I have many allies. I find the greatest of them are often the ones who cannot be seen."

He raises his hand and two black-robed figures appear from swirling blue vortexes. "My shadow priests, for example, great sorcrerers bound to dark powers, long ago stripped of identity and purpose beyond servitude. They are the ones who will finish this fight for me."

He outstretches his hand and shouts, "ATTACK HIM!"

The two shadow priests advance, floating above the ground and preparing to cast spells.

Kaito charges up both hands with lightning and blasts both of them out of the air, knocking them to the ground. One of them slinks upwards, but Kaito follows up with a powerful leaping kick, finding that they are thankfully physical in nature.

"Idiots! Get up and cast something!" Gozen orders them.

The second one vanishes into the ground and reappears nearby, waving his arms and creating a fountain of flames that threatens to envelop Kaito. The Earthrealmer rolls aside and is back on his feet in an instant, just in time to dodge a bolt of lightning summoned from above by the first. Kaito dodges behind a pillar and then leaps out, kicking the second one in the chest, causing him to fly backwards into the wall.

Kaito sees the other one preparing a spell and leaps back just in time to avoid a fireball launched at his back. He turns to face the only remaining shadow priest and roundhouse kicks him to the ground with his leg wreathed in lightning. Before he can get up, Kaito jumps atop him and unleashes a burning electrical discharge, his entire body temporarily covered in lightning that leaps off and scorches the shadow priest.

Kaito's ears pick up the sounds of running feet. Gozen is escaping, the coward!

"H-How?!" he shouts.

"I'm learning new things about myself every day," Kaito smiles, looking down at his hands. "And now, all that's left is to deal with you."

Kaito reaches down and picks the man up by his collar.

He looks nearby and sees some rope. "Now, I'm going to tie you upside down, until you tell me what I want," he says.

"I'll talk..." the man says, defeated. "I'll talk..."

"Now, I'll ask again," Kaito says as he stands over the man. "Who is your brother?"

Gozen takes a moment to calm he breathing as much as he can and he spits out, "Reiko! One of the highest ranking officers in Shao Kahn's army! He'll, he'll have your head for this!"

Kaito smirks. "We'll see about that. Now, what are you doing with the Brotherhood of Shadow?"

"The Brotherhood has a truce with the Emperor... I serve both as part of that agreement... I lead his men here, with help from the Brotherhood of Shadow."

"Alright. Last question. When is the force you are currently commanding returning to the city?"

"Dawn, tomorrow," he says quickly.

"Alright, I've got enough," Kaito says, tying up his feet.

"W-Wait, I told you everything!"

"This is temporary," Kaito tells him as he strings him upside down from a decorative ceiling lamp hanging on a thick chain.

Kaito goes to the balcony just in time to see the gates opening and his forces being let in. A shadow across the moon catches his attention as Turana flies over the city, her wings spread far and wide as she carries Sareena and Yanake on her back.

Kaito shoots a bolt of lightning up into the sky to get their attention, and a moment later, Turana lands on the large balcony next to him. Yanake leaps off the sphinx's back and runs up to Kaito.

"Gozen?"

"Hanging out in that hallway over there. Still half-alive."

"Half-dead, more like," she says, walking towards him. "We need to finish the job."

"He could be useful," Sareena says. "A hostage."

"He knows more than he's told you. He likely has detailed knowledge of the Emperor's forces elsewhere, perhaps even the Emperor's lands and his palace. Maybe knowledge of portals to other realms, perhaps even Earthrealm..." she says suggestively.

Kaito catches up to Yanake. "Wait. I think we should keep him alive, at least for now. I think we can milk more information out of him."

Yanake turns to consider him with a fierce look in her eyes. "This man is the one responsible for killing my father and destroying my village."

"And he'll pay for that, I promise you," Kaito says, closing the gap and pulling her in for a hug. "He'll pay for all of that and more. But for now, let's keep him in the dungeons under constant guard."

"His assassins are clever," Yanake says.

Kaito looks back at Sareena. "Then it's a good thing we've got someone who knows their tricks. She'll help guard him."

After a moment, Yanake nods. "Alright, Kaito. I trust you."

She cuts the rope and takes pleasure in the groaning noise Gozen makes as his head hits the floor. She has two of her men bring him to the dungeon, and Sareena follows.

As Kaito and Yanake return to the throne room, another guard runs up. "My lady, another force! From the east!"

"What? Who could it be?"

Kaito smiles. "I think I know who."

Less than an hour later, Asgaarth and several of his warriors stand in the throne room of the city with Kaito, Yanake, Turana and Rokuro.

"I'm glad you're here," Kaito says to the large white-feathered birdman.

"I would not forsake a vow," Asgaarth replies. "My people stand ready to aid in this battle."

Yanake unfolds a scroll detailing a basic layout of the walled city and the surrounding lands.

"The people of this city are still weak, despite our supplies. Some of them are well enough to help us fight, but not all. The enemy will march from the west and likely lay siege to the city once more when they realize that the doors will no longer open for them."

"The element of surprise will be our greatest asset," Asgaarth notes. "This city has few defenses, so we should prepare all we can. Catapults, archers, boiling pitch to pour over the walls. We need to even the odds as much as we can."

Yanake nods. "If the enemy manages to get into the city, there will be fighting in the streets. Houses burnt. More than defense, we need a way to break their morale. We already have Gozen, so they are without tactics. If we can rob them of their spirit, they will have nothing more."

Rokuro folds his arms. "I say we meet them on the field and charge them. Fight them man-to-man."

"They outnumber us still, even with Asgaarth and his people. But the odds are better now," Yanake concedes.

Kaito folds his arms over his chest and closes his eyes, deep in thought.

"We'll try to do as much as we can. Asgaarth, you and your people should work on the defenses. Yanake, give them half of your people for help. The rest will go with Rokuro into the caves."

"What for?" Rokuro asks.

"There's a big beast in there we could use against the enemy. A Tormentor. Turana, do you have any kind of magic that might bring that thing under our control?"

"Yes, something like that," the sphinx says, her ears perking up. "A beast such as that has a simple mind, easily swayed by illusions. I can trick it."

"Good. You go with Rokuro and get that thing on our side."

The sphinx nods and moves off with Rokuro to put the plan into motion.

Yanake approaches Kaito. "And what of you?"

"Now, we learn more from our friend in the dungeon," he says.

Kaito and Yanake walk down the stone stairs and back into the dungeon. There, Sareena casually leans against a stone wall. She smiles at Kaito's approach. "Only two assassins for him so far," she says. "Easy enough."

"Tell me what keeps your army going without you. Who leads them now?"

Gozen coughs a bit, but then answers. "A large warrior. Dull-witted... but strong. He is... was... my enforcer. I sent him... west with the others."

"And what is he?"

"Just a man, just a man," Gozen replies. "But a strong one."

"So, we take him out, and then what? Who's third in line?"

Yanake looks over at Kaito. "This doesn't seem very relevant. We should end this and get back to the others with what we've learned."

"Last question, Gozen, and then I leave. Do you know a way to get to Earthrealm?"

"No," he says. "I have never been to Earthrealm."

Regardless of whether or not he speaks the truth, Kaito stands up and looks at Yanake. "Okay. He's all yours."

"W-Wait, wait! You can't! You can't!"

Kaito walks out of the cell.

He hears Yanake speak. "Do you remember my father? What about Tianshou, my home? I'll make you remember."

As Kaito ascends the stone stairs with Sareena, they hear the last of Gozen's screams.

"That was quite entertaining," Sareena muses.

"I got what I needed. Where is Tortek now?"

"Guarding the front door like a good little watchdog," she says with a smile.

Kaito nods and heads towards the palace gate, where Tortek stands guard.

"Tortek, we have a job to do," Kaito tells him. "If we take out the current leader of their army, they'll fall apart fighting each other. We need to catch up to Rokuro and Turana and join them."

Sareena raises a brow. "You don't think you should be here, in the city, leading the defenses?"

"I stand by you, master," Tortek quickly adds.

Sareena rolls her eyes.

Kaito continues, "Yanake will stay here with Asgaarth and coordinate the city's defense. Tortek, you're with me."

"And me?" Sareena asks.

"Stay in the city. Find any more of Gozen's assassins and take them out. We can't have them working behind our lines."

Sareena nods and leans forward, planting a kiss on Kaito's cheek. "Be careful out there," she says before walking away.

Kaito rubs his cheek as Tortek curiously sniffs the air. The human shakes his head. "Let's go," he tells the tarkatan and the two of them are off.

Once more within the caverns, they find Rokuro and Yanake's strongest warriors watching Turana work her magic on the Tormentor. The massive reptilian monster's head sways as she playfully dances her paws in an intricate pattern with a show of lights, hypnotizing the beast.

Rokuro shakes his head. "We should have broken it. Made it work for us. That is what the Emperor does."

"The less like him we are, the better," Kaito counters.

Turana finishes her magic and the beast lumbers forward, towards the mountain exit of the cave. Kaito walks up to the sphinx.

"He is not so frightening," she says. "He is more like a child."

"I have to admit, I'm impressed," Kaito says. "Any chance you could teach me some of that magic?"

"Maybe," she replies slyly. "How good are you at riddles?"

"We already played that game once," Kaito says with a smile.

"When do we get to the fighting," Rokuro bluntly interrupts.

"Soon. The army is only a few hours away. All we need to do is take out the big guy leading them, Hoko, and the other captains and lieutenants will fight it out for command."

"I'll kill more than just one man," Rokuro says. "I was promised a good fight."

"Hey, take as many as you can," Kaito shrugs.

"And what is our plan of attack?" Turana asks.

>A) Intercept them before they reach the city
>B) Wait for them at the city gates
>C) Let them reach the city and attack them from behind

"We let the enemy reach the city and meet its defenses. We circle around behind them and hit them from both ends. They'll have nowhere to run."

"Now this is a plan I like," Rokuro says. "We smash them to a pulp."

"Alright, let's move out," Kaito says, leading the group as they follow the hypnotized Tormentor.

>A few hours later...

Having navigated his force to the west in preparation of sneaking up behind the enemy, Kaito watches as the conquering army marches back towards the city. Many different banners and flags are flown, and a variety of men and beasts travel with them, all wearing feudal and barbaric armor and carrying weapons like axes, maces, clubs and swords.

When they are instead met not with an opening door, but instead arrows and boiling pitch raining down upon them, it does not take them long to learn what happened and they begin the attack, preparing ladders and rope.

Kaito stands up and gives a call. Turana nods and focuses on the Tormentor, who rushes down the hill towards the back of the enemy force, roaring and stomping all along the way. Rokuro similarly lets out a primal cry as he charges towards the enemy, and behind him, Kaito and Tortek and the other warriors.

Turana closes her eyes and uses her magic to grow, becoming as large as the Tormentor once more, before spreading her wings and flying overhead towards the enemy crowd.

Kaito watches the Tormentor tear into their forces like a rabid dog through newspaper. As his force charges in behind the gap the monster creates, Kaito begins the search for Hoko.

Stay close enough to the Tormentor to have it doing the heavy work and only killing anyone that come after us. Keep looking for Hoko.
>>
>>40141145

Kaito attempts to stay near the Tormentor, but as the great beast knocks over a siege tower, he nearly finds himself trapped underneath it. One of the soldiers sees Kaito and swings an axe at him, but the quick human manages to dodge out of the way in time and get back up on his feet. As the axe soldier charges, Kaito brings up his foot and kicks him in the face, putting him down.

He quickly surveys the battle for anyone who looks like Hoko, but doesn't see him yet. Nearby, Tortek and Rokuro are tearing through the enemy ranks as Turana flies by overhead, picking enemies up and dropping them from on high.

As Kaito prepares to summon up a font of energy, a large brute hits him in the back of the head with a club. Kaito falls forward, face in the dirt, as the man laughs. Needless to say, Kaito doesn't summon the thunder.

Kaito looks up at him. He's not quite big enough as described to be Hoko, and he's got an club; Hoko was described as carrying an axe. He quickly gets back up to his feet and prepares to square away with the club-wielding brute. The throbbing in the back of his head is a reminder of how hard that club can hit.

Kaito dashes forward faster than the man can react and kicks his weapon hand, forcing him to drop the club. With a few follow-up kicks to the chest and face, the man is put down, out cold and no longer a problem.

Kaito surveys the scene once more, searching for Hoko. He thinks he catches a glimpse of the large warrior near the city gate, burying his axe into the thick wood. Kaito runs through the throng, punching and kicking when needed, and gets a better look.

He matches the description, alright. The man looks nine feet tall; more like an ogre than a human or an outworlder, with an oddly-shaped forehead and a large nose. He is currently trying to hack his way through the gate; were it any other man, Kaito would doubt it possible, but with this brute, who knows. Kaito believes he may have a straight shot at him.

Kaito initially thinks to fire lightning into the sky towards Hoko, not to harm him but to summon his allies towards the ogre-like hulk, but instead decides he would rather take on the brute himself for the glory and charges forwards. He barrels through two soldiers and ducks under a third as he runs up to the back of Hoko.

>>40141980

He leaps into the air and twists, summoning up energy and concentrating it on his leg. He roundhouses the brute's head, which makes him stumble forward and hit his forehead on the door.

As Kaito lands, the large axe-wielding barbarian turns around and leers down at him.

"Are you the one called Hoko?" Kaito demands to know.

"Hoko. Angry," he replies.

'Well, Gozen wasn't kidding,' Kaito thinks to himself as the massive axe is lifted high and brought down. Kaito sidesteps it as the head is buried in the earth and gets ready to attack. "Alright then, let's go, me and you! Mortal Kombat!"

Kaito raises a foot high in the air and brings it down like a lightning bolt, cleaving right through the head of the axe. The sudden lack of weight causes Hoko to pull too hard on nothing and he stumbles back, accidentally stepping on one of his warriors. Kaito brings a fist upwards and smashes his jaw with a vicious uppercut, cutting his chin and throat slightly with the bladed gauntlet, and the brute trips and falls on his back, crushing another soldier.

Kaito leaps atop his chest and prepares to let the Bloody Fist style come out.

Kaito rolls away where a soldier tries to stab him with a spear. He grabs the spear and holds a hand in the soldier's face, letting out a lightning bolt that sends him flying back with a blackened face.

Kaito kicks his feet out and leaps up, still holding the spear. Hoko pounds his chest. "Hoko! ANGRY!"

"Yeah, I got that," Kaito deadpans.

Kaito attempts to focus enough lightning energy into his palms to shock Hoko, but his grip is strong and is rapidly squeezing the air out of Kaito's lungs.

Kaito brings his feet up and plants them on Hoko's ribcage and shoulder and begins to push back. He closes his eyes and summons up every last bit of his might to push against the large man's strength.

Hoko's eyes widen as his arm dislocates from its shoulder socket and Kaito falls from the loosened grip along with the unresponsive arm. Hoko roars in fury and swipes at Kaito with his left arm, but Kaito blasts him in the face with a lightning bolt and knocks him back.

He follows up with a devastating drop kick to the chest that knocks Hoko back into a ladder, causing some of his men to fall on him. At that moment, a large pot of boiling pitch is poured from the wall down atop him, covering him in it, burning him and blinding him.

Hoko swings wildly about, one arm uselessly dangling at his side, as he tries to find his opponent.

Kaito steps back and waits for the moment to strike the killing blow.

Kaito raises a hand and casually shoots a bolt of lightning at the ogre-like outworlder. The lightning strikes the pitch and ignites it, burning him alive. He flails and screams, making a show big enough for the entire army to see, and eventually falls over and dies on the spot.

From the wall is thrown a spike, whose head sticks in the ground and bears two important things impaled upon it: Gozen's head and his Brotherhood of Darkness sigil.

With both of their leaders dead and on display, the gate of the city opens and out pours the remainder of Yanake's forces, augmented by Asgaarth's people.

In under an hour, the siege is broken. The people of Xun-Koto cheer as the remaining warriors flee, driven off by the defenders. Broken into smaller bands, they likely will not form much of a threat until they rejoin a larger force.

But not today, for today is a victory for the people of Outworld.

As the sun rises over the battlefield, Kaito sits atop a large broken log and relaxes, tending to his wounds.

Rokuro approaches him and sits down, his large frame nearly dwarfing his own.

"Good fight?" Kaito asks.

"I killed many, but many more ran," Rokuro muses. "Another day."

"Hey, he who fights and runs away lives to die another day," Kaito jokes.

Nearby, many of the dead bodies, including that of the Tormentor, brought down by enemies focusing on it and only it, despite the number of losses it resulted in.

Yanake, Asgaarth, Sareena, Tortek and Turana approach. Yanake bears few wounds from the battle; Tortek and Rokuro suffered far worse, but are still able to walk.

"Akayama Kaito, the people of this land have a dept to you that can never be paid," Yanake says with a smile. "You are the reason we have won this fight."

"I'm just a guy who can shoot lightning," Kaito chuckles, dismissing his extraordinary abilities.

"But you are more than that. You are a good leader, and a good person. The people of Xun-Koto need new leadership, and I am the one they have chosen. I... would have you share this with me."

Everyone grows quiet as Yanake makes her intentions clear. Kaito looks into her eyes and she smiles. "If you but would," she says, holding out her hand.

Alright, that settles it then.

Kaito stands up and reaches for her hand, taking hold of the back of it and closing her palm. He sees some of the hope fade from her eyes.

"I'm sorry. I can't. There's... too much left to do before I make a decision like that, Yanake. And this world, it just isn't my home. Do you understand?"

"I do," she nods. "I can't say I'm not slightly saddened, but I understand. Thank you, Kaito. We can never truly repay you."

"Just living your lives is payment enough."

She nods and says farewell before returning to the city.

Sareena approaches. "So... then what's next?"

"I need to find the Sea of Blood," Kaito tells her. "I think there might be an answer for me there, to some of the questions I've been carrying around for a while now."

Rokuro folds his arms. "Our fight is not finished."

Kaito looks at the half-shokan. "I'm going to need a rain check on that."

"Why not come with us?" Sareena invites him. "Then you can kill him later anyway."

Rokuro shakes his head. "I do not wish to travel with others. I will walk my own path. You will do the same, I know this. We will part now in friendship, but I will not forget our fight. When next we meet..."

Kaito smiles. "Alright, I get it. I'll see you then," he says as he outstretches his hand.

Rokuro firmly shakes it before turning around and walking away.

Kaito looks to the rising sun and sighs. "So... anyone know which direction the Sea of Blood is in?"

Everyone is silent.

"Well, that's the first thing then, isn't it," Kaito says, approaching the city. The others follow him.

>To be continued next time.

I thought about going on a bit further, but I think the thread isn't getting too much traffic. I'll be back next weekend, where we'll catch up to some more classic Mortal Kombat characters and find what secrets lie within the Sea of Blood.

The marriage option effectively would have ended Kaito as our protagonist; we likely would have rolled a new one and jumped to Mortal Kombat II's events. Kaito wouldn't be gone forever, but focusing on his rule over the kingdom isn't really what I would want the game to be about, which is more of a continuous adventure.
