While Samiel gets ready for the fateful visit to Dancing Smoke's volcano that you have planned, you get your own business sorted out.

The day is ending, and, to the best of your knowledge, Skullstone's fleet might appear as early as tomorrow night, meaning you have about 30 hours or so.

Of course, maybe you'll be lucky and they'll be late. Maybe.

The Manse is virtually finished. Not all of its most complex and magical functions are active, but it has the structure and fortifications complete, and that's what you care most about. Work is frenetic, but at this point is't mostly adding reinforcements and defensive earthworks, which is a better use of manpower than adding functions, to the Manse, that will not be of immediate use in the upcoming battle.

Valeriana thinks the lynchpin, the final stone that will close the geomantic arrangement and bring the Manse's aspect to life, should be placed tomorrow, at noon. And it will need you to bless it personally.

You flip through your notes and communiques, and see reports, from your naval scouts at sea, of a large bank of fog moving unnaturally fast on the ocean, heading for the island of Tianna.

And, while you were gone apparently Irene left you a note, asking you to go and meet her in one of the subterranean rooms of the Manse, set up as mechanical workshops and magical forges. One of the few functions of your Manse that are currently active.

On top of that, if you intend to further Tiger Warrior Train your followers, you have today and tomorrow for that. And today is running out. You can only do that once per day, and the day ends at midnight, six hours from now.

As you set the papers aside and pace through what will one day be your throne room, brushing your hands on the finely cut marble of its empty walls, you try your best to clear your mind.

No sense worrying now. Everyone did their absolute best, and this fortress, erected in but a few days where it should have taken months or years, is proof of that. All that's left is for you to do your best as well.

Samiel said he'd wait for you in his room. It probably shouldn't take long for him to be prepared, but this whole deal about restoring Dancing Smoke's memories... it could take longer than you suspect. You doubt it'll literally be as easy as pulling a lever.

>But it's top priority, so go and pick up Samiel, then ask Tia for a lift up to the volcano for the two of you.
>First of all, I need to put in four hours of training - they can even be just 2 thanks to Silk's Bottle - to properly train my retainers. (Regis / Millian / Pyre)
>I should have a chat with Amata first.

>Who are we?
Maka, an exiled noble Exalted as a Zenith-caste Solar. Queen of Gem, now ruling the western island of Tianna. You have gathered a lot of allies and friends, and have a powerful Manse under construction.
But Tianna is actually an artificial island, built around a First Age Titan: an almighty flying fortress built in an ancient, forgotten age, and although this is kept secret, two Deathlords are seeking to obtain it.
The Tyrant of the Doomsday Machine, ghost of your past incarnation, seeked it as a weapon to cut her ties to the Neverborn. But you have persuaded her to try and seek redemption in the eyes of the Sun in other ways, and count her as an unlikely ally.
But now the Silver Prince is coming, to punish her and claim the Titan for himself in the name of Oblivion. And this looks like a battle you won't be able to talk your way out of...

>Solar? Zenith? I don't know Exalted...
This quest is as newbie-friendly as possible, and I want it to work as a newbie's intro to Exalted. If you have ANY question, ask in thread. For the setting, google "1d4chan exalted".

>Archive?

>System?
Dicepool-like system. When performing an action, everyone rolls 1d10 when posting. the first X rolls are considered, where X is equal to attribute + ability. Yes, this means that the more people are posting, the stronger Maka is, up to a limit of her attribute + ability.

>XP?
Attributes cost [current score x5] xp. Abilities cost [current score x3] xp, except Zenith costing [(current score x3) -1]. Charms cost 10 xp, except for Zenith-based charms (related to charisma and physical/mental fortitude) which cost 8 xp. At the end of every "session" (thread) you will be presented with a list of possible acquisitions.

You had to Irene's laboratory, in the underground levels of the Manse, right next to the main workshop (where Valeriana is): A smaller room, but still quite large and impressively illuminated by light-crystals and lined with heavy, stone stone tables.

A foundry assembly is set in the far was, smaller than the one in the other room, but the area around it is filled with boxes and barrels, tools, anvils and bellows, and strange blocky metallic machines, some inert, some with moving and spinning parts. Showers of sparks and ear-piercing noises erupt from them, together with flashes of colorful light and stray motes of Essence flying through the air, as a good two dozen of white-cloaked engineers from the Tianna military busy themselves around.

Both Irene and Aexel are here, directing the work. As you approach, you can see that part of what you thought was machinery is actually the skeletal frame of a warstrider, apparently assembled by bits of the broken units you recovered from the beach. It seems to be a bit larger than those, a hollow humanoid structure of metallic beams laden with pulleys, chains, wheels and springs to transmit movement from the pilot to the rest of the body.

"That's... impressive." You admit, approaching. At this point, you can barely tell the arms and legs apart. "You got rid of the Soulsteel plating?"

"Maka!" She welcomes you. Nope, she seems still hyped up. "Yeah, it just won't do. Besides, the Silver Prince could find a way to turn it against us if we left some in. We're replacing it all with Jade."

"I thought you were short on Jade." You reply, confused.

"Not anymore." She beams. "Mom recovered a good deal of old Jade bits in the, uh, in the dungeons under Tianna Castle, long forgotten."

"Oh, right, I never got the chance to ask her what her... investigation turned out." Good to know that she didn't accidentally betray the big secret in the heat of the moment.

"I actually didn't even have the time to check what most of the stuff we got from down there WAS!"

"That much in a hurry, huh." You muse.

"I know, right. So we just packed up everything and headed here on the double. But now I've gone over all of that stuff, and it's AMAZING." She looks like she's about to jump up and down on the spot.

"Calm down, Irene." You smile. "So, what goodies did you bring?"

"Well, a lot of Jade and Jade alloys of all five colors, mostly in broken artifacts, but some pure ingots as well, and several intact artifacts, mostly weapons and armor, but a few minor utility artifacts. A good deal of other mundane metals, but very little of other magical metals. But." And here her grin becomes even larger. "We also found a lot of standardized magitech spare parts, probably meant for maintenance. And we also found something crazier..." She steps aside and drags you away from Aexel, who was beginning to pay more attention to your conversation than to the work going on.

"What is it?" You ask her, once you're sure no one can overhear your conversation.

"First of all, other three suits of Ashigaru armor, but that's not the best part. The best part is that we found the assembly line. With the presses for the parts and all the blueprints and instructions."

"So... you can just MAKE Ashigaru armor now?" You ask her, astonished.

"Not that easy, it'll take a long time to set up a new workshop... but we can try! AND! That's not even the BEST part!"

"I thought it was." You reply, trying to not look too amused by her enthusiasm.

"The BEST part-" She ignores you and continues, on a complete roll "-is that we found bits and parts of, get this... a giant, magical automata dragon."

"...A what."

She gestures to a burned-out husk to the side, one you didn't may much attention to. But now that you look at it, you can kinda see it. A blackened metallic skull, with powerful jaws and deep-set eyes. A neck structure, with a clawed paw still attached to it. The beginning of what should have been a wing. You feel shivers.

"It's a level of magical technology so far beyond what we know today that I don't even know where to begin!" She continues. "And you know what?"

You sigh. "...That's not even the best part?"

"THAT'S NOT EVEN THE BEST PART! With some components from this, others that I found around, and a few coming from the wrecked ships and Warstriders, I've found the pieces that I was missing to finish repairing and upgrading the Swiftrider!"

"The what?" You try to remember. "Oh, that First Age mechanical horse machine? Does it work fine now?"

"Well, it worked sorta alright even earlier, but now I've customized it." She says, grabbing a cloth draped over something lying around and pulling it off in a grand gesture.

When the dust clears, you see before you a sleek, compact machine crafted from orichalcum-infused brass, steel and gold, set with Jade and glass gemstones.

"...Whoa."

"I KNOW, RIGHT!" She sounds inordinately proud about it.

"...Doesn't this thing need a Hearthstone to work?" You point out, noting the visible votrtex of Essence powering it from within.

"It should, but I came up with a backup system where it can work with the same Essence cartidges I make for fueling Essence-discharge weapons. But on top of using those, it also drains the Essence of whoever uses it, so it's really inefficient. Still, it's a way of using it for now, until we can make more manses." She pats the machine proudly. "I want you to test it."

"Me?" You ask back.

"Yes. You're the one who travels the most out of all of us, generally, and asking lunars to fly you around all the time can be a bother. With this, you can travel in style."

"But... what about you?"

"I don't travel around as much as you do. Besides..." She half-turns to look a the Warstrider being assembled behind her. "...I'm still working on my ride."

"Oh... Alright. Thank you." You reply, patting the machine in turn. It gently hums with power. "Is it loaded?"

"It has enough cartridges to work for several hundred kilometers, yes. But this way of using it puts stress on the engine, so once things calm down, I'll have to take a look at it." She nods. "There's a gauge that will tell you when it's about to run out of Essence, so you'll know."

"Still." You scratch your head, trying to find a way to not sound too full of yourself. "Will it be that useful? Even without Tia, I can run pretty fast, you know. And have the endurance to keep it up."

"Oh, I'm pretty sure that the Swiftrider is going to be faster than you. It might even give Tia a run for her money."

"Don't tell her." You giggle. "She WILL take that as a challenge."

"And also, technically, the Swiftrider is a horse." Irene adds.

"Technically? What do you mean?"

"I mean that charms meant for riding horses and other living creatures will work on it."

That does sound amusing, but you don't know any. You've never had much experience with riding.

...You shouldn't say that out loud, though. The joke practically writes itself.

"Also, this." She reaches out and pushes a button and the Swiftrider noisily collapses itself, folding into a small, square metallic backpack.

"Wow. Neat. You made it do that?"

"It was already designed to. I couldn't make this stuff up." She waves her hand dismissively.

"So, when are you repairing the dragon?" You ask her.

"Never." Is the reply. "There's barely anything left, and I don't even know where to begin. It's just too far beyond me."

"Oh. I see... but the Warstrider will be ready, right?"

"I will MAKE it ready." She replies, determined. "I promise. It will stride through THIS particular war."

You thank Irene from the bottom of your heart for all the work and enthusiasm, and leave, round up Regis (who was doing exercises by himself to get used to the suit of Ashigaru armor he's now wearing) and head back into Silk's realm.

This time, you manage to parry Silk's headlong assault and avoid getting bits of her all over you like usual.

"MAKA! I missed you so much!" She inglobes you in an enveloping hug.

"I was here earlier today, Silk." You futilely try to talk some sense in her, then look around. "...Where's my brother?"

"Oh, I'm rapi- taking care of him in my palace." She mentions, pointing at the large construction in the distance.

"You can be in multiple places at the same time here?" Sometimes you forget just how crazy Fae can be in their natural element, but fortunately she never fails to remind you.

"Oh, sort of." She grins. "It makes it easier to do all sort of fun things."

"I bet it does." You nod, seeing the potential. You notice that a thin tentacle of Silk's blue matter connects her mass to the river flowing not too far away from you. You wouldn't be surprised to see a similar appendage connecting the river to... whatever's happening in the palace.

Oh, well. If everything goes right, your brother will emerge from this not just having recovered from his wounds, but with some training under his belt as well.

"And how are you." She drops down to Regis' height and ruffles his hair amicably. "No mutations yet? No weird things in weird places? Good, good. You're a sturdy tiny mortal."

"He's not tiny, he's young, Silk. We've gone over this." You groan.

"It's alright." Replies Regis. "It's not like she'll ever learn the difference. So... what are we doing today?"

"Did you get used to your armor?" You ask. The elaborate suit of technomagical armor fits snugly on Regis' lithe body, having been custom-tailored for his smaller stature by Irene. His cutlass hangs from his belt, looking well-used.

"I think so, yes." He closes and opens his hand, as if testing how well the gauntlet's plates connect to each other.

"How does it work, actually?" You ask him.

"Well, when I do this..." And he pulls down his helmet and cowl, which were hanging behind his head, connected to the rest of the suit like a hood to a sweater. The helmet covers his head and face entirely. It has five red glass lenses for eyes, and covers the mouth with some sort of filter. "...It activates." His voice is now hollow, like if coming from someone speaking from one end of a steel drum. "I can see even better with this visor, even in darkness, and I can make things bigger as if looking them through a spyglass just with a though. The suit has an air supply I can breathe from if I need to, and filters in case the supply runs out and the air around me is still poisoned or something."

"I see." You nod. That does sound interesting.

"And I can do this." He seems to relax and focus for a moment, and the armor plates shift in color, mimicking the surroundings.

"Nice trick. I didn't know they could do that."

"Irene helped me out figuring it. And, on top of that, it's a really sturdy yet light armor."

"Well, then. Are you ready?"

He bows formally. "Yes, teacher!"

Skills only give dice to the dice pool. Physical, though, gives dice, health, and damage. We should boost our Tiger Warriors to Physical 4 before we boost any other traits.
>>
>>40128390
For normal tiger warriors, yes.
But the charms Regis, Millian, and Pyre ca learn are probably ability based like ours
>>
So I know it's poor form for a Solar Exalted to make plans for what happens if they fail (being creatures representing victory and supremacy and all that), but do we have a backup plan for the artifacts if they fall into the wrong hands?
>>
>>40128540
Like if we give them to not so great people or if they get taken from us?

Either case we send Five Tails, Radiant, and Zareen to take them back.

Actually with most MM Artifacts we probably won't be giving them to any non-Exalted
>>
"Very well. First of all, punch that house in half."

"Yes, teacher!"

The amazing part of Regis being newly-awakened is that he's at the phase where he's realizing that what he used to think of as his old limits no longer apply to him, so he's trying to redefine them.

You went through that phase too. And Regis now doesn't have a clear idea of what he can or can't do.

Which means he actually tried to punch the house, instead of stopping and replying "no way, that's impossible, stupid, and actually pretty damn dangerous" like a sensible mortal would.

Good.

Over the next four hours, you subject him to all sorts of trainings. He can forget about the armor and the cutlass: you focus on drilling his body. Strength, speed, coordination, endurance. Running, weight-lifting, jumping, things like that. Of course, scaled up: You chuck rocks at him and have him punch them into pieces in mid-air, sprint uphill carrying you on his shoulders (while dodging Silk's tentacles), jump higher and higher and more and more dangerous obstacles, and so on.

By the end of the training, he's a wreck, barely capable to stand. Wreathed in a pale golden glow, you can tell that he's also burned through all of his essence.

But he's still standing, and that's what's important.

"...You're at your limit." You smile at him. "You pushed yourself harder than anyone else. This is more or less it, your body wouldn't take anymore than this. And you can come this far only because you have Awakened your Essence... without that, you would've broken."

He falls sitting down, panting.

"You can still improve in other ways, and actual combat experience will do you good, but, physically speaking, you're at your peak."

He collapses.

"...Alright, maybe we overdid it a bit. If he stayed here, would he suffer or develop mutations?"

"Eh, he's a tough little candy."

"It's "tough little cookie", Silk."

"Whatever. I don't think a day or two in here will do him any changes." She turns to you. "Some mutations are useful, you know. They can be cool, you know. Don't be like that."

"I'll be like that." You point out forcefully. "Can you keep him here to rest as well? He needs time to recover." And you follow that up with a glare. "But be clean with him. He's not my brother."

"Of course." She smiles. "He doesn't have deep wounds anyway, just a lot of cuts and bruises. I can take care of that.

And said that, Silk just grabs him and shoves him inside her own body, where he starts floating.

You give her a long glare.

"What. I'll give him air, don't worry. I'm not stupid." She replies. And then grins. "...Isn't there something else you wanted to tell me? Or... give me?"

"...How did you-"

"Because it's about time you did. It would make for a good story." She explains, calmly. "Besides, I've been obedient up to now, right? So this is just about when you start to weight your options and consider the chance I could betray you a calculated risk to be balanced against the help I can give you against the Silver Prince."

You pause. "That was... explanatory."

Fair Folk aren't real people, you remind yourself. They're just very good at pretending they are. Up to now, Silk has been playing the part of your harmless, amusing pet. Now, you're about to change her role in your story.

"You're not entirely wrong. I've grown to trust you, Silk. And, unlike yours... those are my real feelings."

"My feeling are just as real, as long as I decide to believe in them." She cheerfully points out.

You pull the knife out of your pocket. A beautiful, curved glass dagger. You can see it gleam in Silk's eyes.

You changed clothes so many times since you took it, but it's still in your pocket. You don't remember ever moving it.

...Your dress doesn't even HAVE pockets.

"Will you swear a new Oath?" You ask her.

"Yes." She replies.

"Do you swear that you will never turn this Sword against me or my people, or against my will, but only against my enemies?"

"And do you swear that I will be kept safe in your home, well-treated, well-fed and entertained?" She replies.

"Only if you also swear that whatever gossamer collection you do will not hurt or harrow people, physically, mentally or spiritually."

"To the best of my ability, of course." She smiles. "But some things will just be lost. Dreams, happiness, sadness, kindness, anger... even if I restrain myself, and just eat the littlest amount and spread it out among as many people as possible, what I do is still eating. And even then, I'd be nearly starving myself. I wouldn't be a very strong ally for you like that."

You're about to form a rebuttal, but then she continues:

"Oh, but the dreams and feelings of the heroic and the Exalted are really stronger. So delicious. Can I eat a bit from then, too? Just a bit, like I've done up to now. I bet no one even noticed."

Why would I? If I did, you'd find out, and then you'd be mad at me and kick me out. And I'd lose all this." She gestures around. >so is there a charm or charms she can learn that means she doesn't need to feed off people at all? because from your wording it would seem like she already learnt the charm that anon was talking about
She did. And, well, the most efficient way for feeding for a Fae IS human emotions. Silk is already employing the other ones (feeding from the Wyld and feeding from a Manse), but the wyld is a little pocket and the manse has most of its Essence channeled in other effects, so it's not much.
"...Can't you find other ways to feed?" You ask her.

"I can survive on the essence flow of the Manse." She explains. "But just survive, little more."

"...What if we went out and raided other Fae's domains for their Gossamer?"

"We can do that." She seems to like the idea. "Although I'm mostly liking your arrangement because I don't want to have to deal with them. But it'd take time."

"Of course it would." You sigh. "Well. It is true that you haven't hurt anyone and kept faith to your oaths, and when you've fed, you've taken care to do as little damage as possible. I'll approve this oath."

She hugs you, "Thank you, Maka."

You pry her off you. "Don't make me regret this. Is that clear?"

"I won't. I promise."

"You promise...?" You urge her to continue, holding the glass dagger in front of her. She places a slimy hand upon it

"This I promise, by my name, and by the Ring and the Cup and the Staff and the Sword, to hold in my Heart, 'till all else is unbound."

When she lifts the hand, the knife is gone.

"Finally." She grins. "I AM WHOLE AGAIN!" She cheers, balling up her fists, growing up to twice her size. Her shape shifts, to a mush harsher, spikier, powerful form. "Ahahaha! You have made a serious mistake, but one you won't have time to regret! And now! Now, Maka! NOW I WILL DESTROY YOU!"

(cont.)
>>
She lifts her massive claws to strike, and then makes a confused face, stopping in mid-motion. "Not buying it?"

"Quit horsing around." You groan.

She sighs and returns to her normal shape. "I thought you'd be at least A BIT spooked."

"So, how much Gossamer do you have that we can use for something in this battle? Now that you have your sword back, I expect you to pull your weight around."

"...I don't have much, but it's still some. What would you want with it?"

I think the best strategy for this battle is to go for a decapitating strike. I would imagine that the Silver Prince would want this to turn into a siege/blockade

This matter settled, you head to the palace to see how Karas is faring.

You ARE kind of feeling guilty for leaving him with Silk. She can be... a handful.

You walk up to the palace's doors and crack the open to find him and eight Silks in a vast, well-furbished room in which the disheveled, damaged bed has clearly seen a terrifying amount of action lately. The entire room is also trashed, but less obviously so, but one table still stands, in the middle of the room.

You see it has been covered with a well-made to-scale replica of a small portion of coastline you dimly recognize, and about a hundred small figurines, none taller than a couple inches, scattered on it, as well as several dices, both of which seem to be made from well-painted wood.

All of Silk's body copies are standing or sitting (on chairs made from their own slimey body matter, so you're not sure it counts) around, looking at the table with varying degrees of interest, except for one who is reading a rather thick book, and two draped around your brother, one by his legs and one around his shoulders.

In all this, Karas is buck naked, save for a few bandages covering the wounds that haven't still healed completely.

"Alright, end of my movement phase and start of my shooting phase. Well, the two units of archers here and there will shoot on your war ghosts by the second trench."

"Do they get a cover save?"

"No, they're behind the trench but not inside it." He calmly explains, clearly trying to stay focused despite the Silk by his feet licking his inner thigh as he speaks.

"But they still get their normal armor save." Silk nods.

That's when Karas lifts his eyes from the table and sees you. They widen with surprise, then narrow with pleading. "...Please get me out of here. I'm running out of ways to distract her." you read on his lips as he mouths voicelessly.

"Are you gonna roll or not?" Silk grins, while the other Silk hugging his shoulders from behind playfully nibbles on his left earlobe.

Oh, he's just teaching her how to play Wardaiklave 4000.

Well, that can be a peaceful diversion, you note, regarding once more the throughoutly-trashed bedroom

"Well... Looks like you're really enjoying this, Karas. Well, see you tomorrow, or I guess in two days for you! Ta-ta."

"NO! PLEASE, DON'T LEAV-" He starts pleading, as you close the doors behind you and leave Silk's realm, satisfied.

You deploy your Swiftrider and decide to give it a try. Changing into appropriate clothes, you mount the strange contraption, finding it strangely comfortable. You let your Essence flow in it, seeing the vortex of energy within it turn from a colorless white-azure to a swirl of molten gold as it roars with power.

Damn, this feels good. You try to give it a bit of speed, and find yourself rocketing through the corridors of the manse at a sudden, neckbreaking speed.

Letting out a scream, you narrowly dodge one Erymanthus, a work crew carrying around a brass panel, a pile of barrels stacked to one side of a passageway, and finally plowing straight through a single skeleton walking around with a small stack of bricks in his hand, turning both him and his cargo into fine dust with the impact.

Blasting up of a set of stairs, you launch off them like a ramp, flying off the roof of your Manse and landing straight into the courtyard where workers and demons alike, finishing the last touches to the manse's exterior, pause for a moment to look at your sudden arrival.

You flick your hair around, bringing it back under control after the wild ride, and turn to stare at a dumbfounded Samiel, In Dancing Smoke's favorite outfit, sitting propped up against a wall, waiting for you.

"Get in, loser." You motion to the back of the machine, where there's space for a second rider. "We're reawakening a god."

With Samiel holding on to you from behind, the Switfrider is a bit too heavy and feels a bit slower and more sluggish, but, on a well-paved road like the one that has just been carved between Pearl and Tianna, it can still easily reach a ridiculous speed. The scenery around you is just a blur, and the wind slams so forcefully against you that you feel almost like riding up a waterfall.

"WHAT IN MALFEAS' TRUE NAME IS THIS THING?!" You can dimly hear cream behind you, his words drowned out by the roar of the Rider. You hear him more because his chest is pressed against your back and the vibrations of his words transmit directly through your bodies, than because it actually reaches your ears.

"BLAME YOUR SISTER!" Is your reply.

"I DO!!"

Now the problematic part: the paved road only gets you up to a certain point. You'll have to cross through mountains to reach the volcano... and up to now it's a trip you mostly just did on Tia's wings. The terrain looks really, really rough and hard to negotiate. The Swift Rider is clearly very sturdy, and you know you and Samiel are as well, but you still have to ask yourself how to proceed from here.

"Hang on tight." You inform your passenger, veering off-road and heading into, and up, the harsh mountains of central Tianna. You both have to keep your mouths shut from here on, as the numbing vibrations are strong enough that you'd probably bite your tongue off if you didn't.

It's around midnight, by your best reckoning, when you finally manage to negotiate all the way up to the caldera of the volcano.

After a bit of rest to recover from the ordeal, Samiel stares down at the boiling lava and grits his teeth. "So. We're doing this."

"Yes." You nod.

"You still haven't told me why it's a LEVER that can restore her memories. And why it's literally inside her own volcano."

"I haven't." You admit. "And I can't."

"Mom dragged you into another of her secrets." He sighs. "Am I just a pawn here?"

You need a moment to think of an appropriate reply to that. "...Honestly, I think I know just a little bit more than you. But I don't think we're pawns here."

"What are we, then?"

You look down into the boiling lava as well. "...People who are forced by circumstances to make decisions with very little planning, information or preparations."

"I'm sure there's a word in Firetongue for that." He notes.

"There is, in fact." You smile.

"Oh, my." You hear a familiar voice intone playfully, as from the caldera's smoke the volcano-goddess materializes before you in a flash of fire. "I haven't been besought in quite a while."

"Smoke." Samiel says.

"Sammy dear." She floats closer and hugs him. "You came for me! And in my favorite dress!"

You leave them a few seconds. "It's time." You then inform her.

"It is, huh." She sighs. "I wonder what I'll remember. I wonder how it will change me."

"You're still sure you want to do this?" Samiel asks her.

"...Yes. I want to be whole again." She smiles. "I plan on remembering, not forgetting. Certainly not forgetting you."

"But we don't know what will happen... How much you will change." He points out, worried.

"...If I'll become a different goddess, then please... be kind to her as you have been to me. Promise me that."

You jump.

[ARMORED IN RIGHTEOUSNESS STANCE x2]
[BURN ESSENCE 4/8]

It feels like falling forever. Finally, you hit the lava, which is not at all like hitting water. It's not just the temperature, which you are immune to anyway: it's molten rock, not much less hard to smack against than actual rock. But, with the force of your impact, you cut through it like a white-hot knife through butter, your body not shattering from the impact only thanks to your Essence suffusing it.

The force of your dive is enough to drop you all the way to the bottom. You remember this place.

Here, an elaborate contraption rests at the bottom of the clearly artificial floor. Not rock, but some extremely sturdy, unknown metal, part of the buried Titan's structure. A complex-looking vent resides at the center of this bubble in the lava, radiating a frightening pressure in waste-essence.

There's no air in this bubble: everything is burned and pushed away by the pressure. This is the origin of the magical heat melting the stone to form the volcano. You don't hear noises, but you feel your entire body vibrating like its component motes are about to fly off independently.

[HEALTH: 8/9]

Fighting against the pain and the pressure, you approach the vent and kneel to examine it, even as you can feel your eyeballs desperately trying to claw their way out of their sockets.

Recalling Amata's instructions, you find the command in question: a small, unassuming, half-concealed little switch in a corner, probably not really deserving of being called a "lever". You see it's connected to reinforced wires going further down into the Titan's structure, but, considering Amata has been working down there, you realize she might have rewired that command to who knows what else.

>You can't stay here any longer. Flip the switch.
>This is suspicious. Swim back up.
>There should be a passage leading into the Titan. Go and see what Amata did. (m+t)
>Try to take apart the switch and learn more about it. (m+t)

You want to see things more clearly.

You swim back up, to the surface of the lava pool, and head into the passageway that for some reason Dancing Smoke can't see, despite being in clear view.

Climbing back into the belly of the broken Titan brings back all sorts of memories, old and new. You try and block them out, or do your best to at least. The place seems to have been scoured clean, at least the part of it you're navigating: not just the debris, but anything that could be removed and reused for something.

Before, it looked like a shattered wreck. Now, it just looks empty and desolate.

[Men + Twi = 9 5 10 6 6 = 3 successes]

You unscrew a few panels, and find the wire from above. Following it, you trace it to the vast chaft running through the Titan vertically. The main reactor. The heart-pillar covered in dials, lights, machinery, wires, pipes, that siphons the massive amount of Essence needed by the power-hungry Titan.

You give one glance to the unassuming panel you tampered with the first time you were here.

The main essence pump. The one outlet for all the Essence. The component that routes this massive amount of power through the vast systems of the armored, floating fortress.

When you first saw it, it was set up to be quite literally one touch away from self-destructing, taking the entire island with it. You still shudder remembering that. All it would have taken would have been one rat chewing the wrong wire...

You look around, and feel relieved to see the safety switches are still how you left them. The system is secure.

So what did Amata do? You five a second look at the pump, and this time examine it in more detail.

>>
>>40134795

>>
There you find the wire in question, plugging right into a socket there, routing Essence from this reactor up to the vent topside.

You don't remember the arrangement being quite like this before. It wasn't plugged directly.

It takes you a bit of exploring to piece together a theory.

Logically, the essence discharge vent should discharge waste Essence, the motes that for some reason the Titan can't or won't use. The Reactor is a source of usable Essence, so it makes no sense to plug it there. It's like throwing away good Essence.

The difference is, of course, that the Essence can't be used anyway: the Titan is dead, its systems long inactive. That Essence has nowhere to go anyway.

With the way Amata has set things up here, slipping that switch up there would close the circuit and... begin dumping the Essence in the reactor core directly into the Volcano?

Your brain clicks, as you place a hand against the smooth, metallic surface of the pillar-machine, the core, spine and backbone of the Titan, both structurally and energetically, not to mention spiritually.

"...YOU are Dancing Smoke's heart, aren't you?" You ask the massive machine, not really expecting an answer. "You still contain the old her. Stuck in an Essence loop for so many centuries, trapped in a dead machine like a ghost in a bottle. And venting this Essence directly into the volcano... will reconnect her with the source. The Essence reactor core."

>Go and flip the switch on the Essence vent, close the circuit.
>Disconnect the vent wire from the Essence pump.
>Flip the safeties off and unplug the Essence pump, initiating the self-destruct sequence.
>Turn the reactor off, causing the entire complex to power down.
>(Other?)

>>
Are you guys sure you don't want to initiate the self destruct sequence? It will solve all of our problems with the abyssals, including the Silver Prince.
>>
You know what you must do.

One after another, you deactivate all the safeties that prevent a critical Essence buildup in the reactor.

Then, you calmly stride up to the Essence valve. The sound of combat is far from you, and they're nowhere close to you.

You might have lost, but you'll bring a whole lot of those bastards to the Underworld with you.

The warm feel of the pump's feedback wire touching your fingertip confuses you for a moment. Is it supposed to be this hot? You give it a tug, but it's harder than you thought- no.

[HEALTH: 7/9]

You slam your head on a hard metallic corner, denting both your forehead and the machinery. The pain sears through your brain, and you can feel yourself emerging from it like a shipwrecked sailor finally making it back to the surface of the ocean.

WHAT WERE YOU DOING?

Your hands are shaking. You're still holding the essence pump's feed wire in your fingers. Still connected. You can feel it move around a bit in the socket. Loose. Cold. You could pull it out now. End it all...

You scuttle back and roll on the floor, trying to run away. A minute later, you feel your jitters receding enough to trust your knees with the monumental task of keeping you standing.

Still in a haze, but with purpose now, you put all of the reactor's safeties back on, and hesitatingly walk back up to the volcano, every nerve and muscle in your body shaking like crazy.

You drop yourself back in the lava, feeling yourself sinking in its warm embrace...

[BURN ESSENCE 0/8]
[HEALTH: 6/9]
Slowly, slowly, you drop down to the Essence vent and, crawling your way up to it, flip the switch.

The sudden spike in Essence pressure just... blows you away. You are slammed back into the churning lava, depriving you of all your sense. You can feel the entire mountain vibrating with the force of a monumental eruption.

The forces nearly rip you in half. You feel yourself being flung up into the sky, and, as the molten rock clears from you, you see something amazing.

Flying like a shooting star, far higher than you've ever been while riding on Tia, you see the island of Tianna from beyond the very clouds, a dot of pure flame burning in its centre.

In your confused head, only one though dominates, as you hang in the heavens for a moment before gravity reasserts itself.

"...this is going to hurt."

Plummeting all the way to the ground, in fact, only your Charms save you from a messy end that would have claimed your life, regardless of even your unnatural resilience. You flip and turn in mid-air and cushion your landing, still slamming open a sizable crater into the flank of the volcano as you do so.

[HEALTH: 5/9]

Crawling out of the rubble, you glance to the top of the volcano, now spewing fire and molten rock into the sky like a titanic pillar of flame. Geography has changed.

On the last sliver of rock remaining intact at the very top of what once was the old crater, you see Samiel, still standing, his arms wide open, staring into the pillar of flame.

And, inside that pillar, you see a shape take form.

"...Dancing Smoke?" You call out, trying to stand back up.

"No." You hear the reply of the goddess within as she emerges in her terrible splendor. "The Flame That Marched Against The Sea."
