When you signed on to beat up this giant crab you didn't really think it'd be a huge pain in the tail. Sadly your ongoing reconnaissance mission isn't giving you proof that won't be the case. The monstrous Crab'thulu is already being assisted by dozens of smaller stone crabs. Smaller being relative in this case as most of them are roughly your size. Luckily they're mostly distracted chipping away at the rock holding the crab fellow crabs deify in place.

Add on to that you've no idea where the injury you were told about in the story is and you're running out of leads. The story mentioned that the "Furious One" did something to Crab'thulu's brain by punching through an eye, but the crab is covered in eyes. Two large flawless ones above its mouth and countless tinier ones spread over its shell. It gives it a really good field of vision, close up at least, that eliminates blindspots.

As you swim deeper into the crag the crab is stuck in, you carefully using any obstruction you can to keep the crab from spotting you. The body of the beast seems to go on forever, and you're not even halfway down the visible length of the thing when you notice an irregular line in the body. It takes you a moment to place where you've seen it before, but you get behind a rock and brace yourself just before the new mouth opens and sucks in water with a good amount of force. You're briefly concerned that the crab has spotted you but when the torrent doesn't resume after a couple minutes you decide it was probably just a coincidence.

You swim down to the last visible edge of the crab, suppressing your glow so that it won't immediately spot you. The massive face of the crab stares out into the darkness at you, which is troublesome since you left its face poking out of the crag above. How many mouths and eyes does this stupid thing have?!

Your breath is running low from your slow movement and exertion, you have a bit of time left before you need to surface and the crag has widened a bit here, you could check the top or bottom sides of the crab if you want. Though there's no real cover so you'd have to try super hard to be any kind of stealthy.

>Check out the top of it, there're scars in the shell maybe there'll be an obvious break
>Check out the bottom, crabs have lots of bits that can shift on the bottom, maybe you can spot something that'll be an opening for an industrious lizard
>Return to the surface and report

You slip under the crab, sliding into the space between its bottom half and the rocky face. There's not much to obscure you here but fine tuning your coloration seems to help with keeping hidden. You slip between two legs for a bit of extra concealment and come out underneath it.

That... is a lot of interlocking plates of armor that are bigger than you are. You consider how to go about investigating them. One of the legs you passed shifts and you see the armored plates shift along with it. If the crab were moving getting inbetween those plates would probably be a death sentence for anything smaller than mom. Mom'd probably lose a limb. You continue look for anything unusual but feel like you're missing something. The gloom cast by the crab's shadow is hard to see through, and while you're pretty sure you have decent night vision you may have spent too much time as your own light source to make it turn on quickly.

Okay this murky crap is annoying. You turn up your glow for a moment then turn it back off, hoping to see something before it sees you. Instead you're surprised by what you find and turn the light back on dimly. The crab doesn't have any eyes on its underside. That seems exploitable. Granted those are some huge armored plates but it's something to look at. You explore as deeply as you can while you have time. As you near what you hope is the center of the crab, near where the rocky face is still scraping against crab shell, you find a discrepancy.

You can only see the edge with the rocks in the way but it looks like there's a large discolored red area. If you were any authority on crab anatomy, and you aren't, you'd call that scar tissue. Potentially scar tissue where a very large eye intended to watch a certain crab's underside. You try to get closer but have to fall back when you notice more stone crabs chipping away furiously around the area rubbing against the angry red tissue. As you watch you hear Crab'thulu shift again, and see his body shift to take more weight off the spot being scraped against the rock.

You consider trying to tear into the bit of the big angry red scar taunting you now. But in the end you decide the chances it'll spray fresh air on you is entirely too low. And you prefer not drowning to murder most days.

Carefully you navigate your way back out from under the crab, avoiding the eyes as best you can before hitting open water. You're continually grateful for the patterning on your skin as you swim and idly wonder why auntie doesn't have a power like this. You'll have to ask her.

In open water, minus still being in the crag, you begin your swim upwards.

You launch up to the surface like a lizard tail powered rocket. Which is pretty speedy. As soon as you got out of the gloomy crack in the earth you felt much better. So much so that you overshoot your target and blast through the surface of the water and into the air. You see your mom and friends following your ascent visually and do your best to look like you meant to do that. There's no reason for them to think you didn't.

"How did it go?" mom asks as you swim up to her.

"That crab is entirely too big," you complain. You tell her about what you found. The crab being covered with eyes. Extra mouths on its sides. More than one face. Stone crabs breaking away the stone holding it in the crack while it is a lazy butt. And most importantly that you think you found a big red pulsating weakspot on its underside!

The other listen intently as you debrief, and nod at all the right times. Occaisionally Mom or Milly's Mom ask a question and you answer it as best ou can recall. Finally mom groans and scratches her head.

"This is starting to sound like a huge pain in the tail," Mom complains, "Things with lots of mouths are either really easy to poison or have iron stomachs and really can't be poisoned that way."

"Do you have other poisons?" you ask.

"Of course, but in water? They'd take a while to work on something that large. And you all would have to stay away from me while I expel it."

"I can deal with the little crabs," Natty, Milly's mom, offers, "I don't really have anything for dealing with the big one. My abilities rather rely on being able to get my tentacles around something." She shrugs.

"What can me and Sunny do?" Milly asks with excitement.

The parents consider a bit before answering.

"Probably best you hang back and wait for us to find the proper place for you. Neither of you are particularly well suited for this."

Use sun magic? Flash brightly and blind it.

Speaking of which, can we replicate that solar blast that we used against the murderturkey, by any chance? Or was that partially responsible for causing our mana cancer?
>>
>>40139219
That was part of our mana cancer.

However, if we stop murdering things for a bit and practice magic, we can probably replicate it.
>>
>>40139046
"I can help," you protest, "It's dark in there and I can be very bright!" You try to demonstrate by turning your glow up as high as possible without setting off the flash you did the other night. You're somewhat disappointed to find out the sun is brighter than you. So much so it's nearly impossible to tell you're changing light values except that your skin forcibly turns to the lightest browns you've got.

"I blinded you once," you remind her once you realize your glow doesn't show as much as you'd like.

Mom hums at that and considers. "Can you do that again?" she asks.

You nod. "I did it with Min when we got the raccoons," you tell her.

"How many times? Or can you be constantly that bright?" Mom asks, sounding interested to hear about what you can do.

"Eh, uhm..." you feel slightly sheepish as you admit, "Once. Then I couldn't do it til I basked this morning." You try to recover. "But if he's distracted I can get into the soft spot!"

"Hmm..." Mom doesn't seem convinced, and neither does Milly's mom. "I suppose you can try, just stay out of sight under the rock layer until you see the best moment. From what you described the damaged bit is mostly covered still. Or else I'd try to go after it directly." She tells you

You got a concession! You start suggesting things Milly might be able to do but her Mom immediately shuts you down. "Milly has not ranked up at all. And the crab can control water around it if it gets angry. She will be safest back here. If things go wrong she can run for more help." She looks at Milly and Milly nods.

"Just remember to stay away from me if possible," Mom reminds you, "If the water is discolored at all you should get further away from me."

"What color?" you ask.

Mom thinks and her body turns red.
[1/2]
>>
>>40139411
[2/2]
"No," Natty says suddenly as she seems to recognize something about your mom, "I may not have seen you recently but if the last red tide was your fault then I'm going to require you use something that doesn't last long enough to kill every fish for miles along a stretch of beach."

Mom frowns but nods and slowly changes to an ugly grayish black.

"This color," she tells you.

Sliding deeper under water you begin your swim to the crack. The plan has you going in at the crab sideways to minimize its chances of seeing you. Above you watch Mom and her friend Natty seperate and break off toward the crab. Seeing mom is hard though since their's a greasy black cloud of streamers that flow off her body as she swims, it dissipates pretty quickly but you get the impression Mom isn't trying that hard yet. Either way the cloud is fairly scary. Mom's terrifying profile occasionally peaking out of the leading edge. You feel a bit of pity for the crab. It's not nearly as scary as mom and she's not even trying.

Plunging into the crack you let out the signal to let the others know you're moving into position and you hear the trill of confirmation from your mom. As you approach the crab's side. You adjust your lighting to camouflage you against the rocks and wait for mom to signal you.

Above you see the cloud of expanding black nastiness moments before you hear mom's signal. Then a dervish that's vaguely colored like Milly's mom passes over the crack with dozens of rock shapes being pulled into her wake. You turn up the light as birght as you can and the part of you that loves the sun pumps out your max capacity as it detects that you're in a horrid where the light of the glorious sun barely reaches due to the encroaching stone above.

You are BRILLIANT. And you hear a grinding wail like bending stone from the crab as the combined assault of your mother, the other mother, and the badass motherfucker you are gets a response. You just wish you were prepared for the response.
[1/2]
>>
>>40140870
[2/2]
You feel a massive build up of mana in the crab and watch as the power flows down one of its legs and smashes to the earth outside the crag just as the leg does the same. The earth shudders and you have to dodge as the cliff wall keeping the crab in place begins to crumble and fall. You're nearly overwhelmed by falling and sliding stone as the earth falls apart in front of you. The ground lets out lesser shudders as the legs lying dormant suddenly press to lift the body free of the remains of Relay Crag.

Standing at its full height the crab nearly reaches to the surface. From here you can see the entirey of the gaping wound in its underside. The ring of scarred flesh still persists but there's only a thin gauzy film over the very center of it. You look around for your mom to see if she's going to go for it and fail to find her in the rubble. Even the cloud she was making has disappeared in the dust and dirt from the crabs earth breaking. You set your claws on stone and push off toward the crab.

Then the crab catches on fire. You think you've gotten its attention.

You set your course, now you're going to stick to it. Your tail paddles behind you and you go in claws out preparing to punch right into the big target. Then you a thump that sounds like something hitting something much larger somewhere far off to your left and the crab shifts and you find yourself on course for an armored plate. You spin in place, trying to correct course or just kill your momentum but still slam hard into the reinforced underside of the crab. A dozen meters from your intended target.

Coughing reflexively you catch your claws into something nearby and try to gain your bearings and catch your breathe. The inherent problem with part two of that plan strikes you immediately. You're hanging from the underside of an angry burning crab and you're completely out of breathe. Then to top it off when you look around you see several oversized barnacles crusted onto the crabs bottom come to life and start marching toward you in crab form.

You manage to dislodge the first wave of crabs by sweeping with your tail, but you feel yourself slowing down as your lungs cry out for air. At least you're not on fire. How is this crab even on fire underwater. Crabs are bullcrap

Claws released from crab and you let yourself drift away from the crab's underside. You whip your tail to get some speed and narrowly avoid getting pinched by a stone crab. You swing around toward a side of the crab at random. It doesn't really matter which. You just need up.

Without the ability to see you the crab can't really do anything, and you are out and past its outermost edge before it can respond. But you do see shafts of ice spear past you as you get into visual range. Off to the landward side you can see Milly's Mom swimming in circles around the limbs the crab uses to try and grab her, narrowly avoiding the hot enough to burn water flames it produces and wrenching them around with the force of her passage alone.

You still can't see mom but you do see her cloud of black poison, again growing as it clings to the side of one of the crab's faces, you notice the black stuff thrives in the fire and actually spread where it comes into contact with it. She's probably fine. Anyway you cut it you need to get air.

As you rise you get your first good look at Crab'thulu unearthed. Nearly 200 meters in diameter and every centimeter burning with magic flame. There are no less than three massive faces with smaller mouths interspersed between the three main ones. It's top surface has a trio of black eyes that stare out as opposed to the singular one you imagine the underside once had. You see Milly's mom spin into one, an underwater drill trailing tentacles and rocks, and she just bounces off the black orbs. You don't even have time to count its legs and pincers.

You hit the surface and overshoot again. Milly immediately appearing from somewhere to see how you're doing. You tell her about your near miss and she seems concerned.

>Pull back this fight got to big for you and you missed your shot.
>Get your breathe and get back in there. You'll just have to make the run again and hope

Milly can swim faster then us right? anyone think it would be a good idea for her to grab on to use and torpedo us into the crab's sweet spot again for a second go or should we back off for now and wait for moment where we could actually help?

Crabs gotta breathe too, right? Go after a leg, see if we can damage its breathing bits. Taking some wind out of it should make things easier for Mom.

Crab's lungs are inside their main shells. And they have gills.
>>
>>40142855
Lungs aren't gills, gills and lungs function completely differently, in fact, this is a good thing for us, we can make it bleed to death if we damage its gills. With lungs we'd just collapse them and make it moderately miserable.
>>
>>40142855
Ah, that's right, the water that gets filtered for air goes in where the claw arms come out. Not sure why I was thinking the gills were in the legs.

Hmm, depending on the direction from which Mom's attacking it, that might not be the best venture to enter. On the other hand, it's a solid enough strategy in theory, so long as it doesn't have special defenses down there.
>>
>>40142694
After a quick discussion you form a new plan with Milly. Milly grabs you around the chest and the two of you dive. Again aiming for the crag as a means of entry. It's half destroyed but as an approach path it offers you full cover on one side. The two of you manage to figure out swimming in sequence quickly and immediately reach an approach speed higher than anything you would be able to make on your own, though Milly complains that she's going "so slowly."

You can still make out your mothers working their way around the surface of Crab'thulu as you approach and have to weave out from your intended course when mom's smoke cloud infringes on your chosen path. You scan the cloud constantly for some sign of her until a leg, one of many, swinging wildly in the dark fog stutters a step in its swing and pulls out of the morass, trailing a foggy clump held in a claw.

Milly's mom continues to make close passes over the crab, pulling away flame and pelting it with the rocks that make up the rock crabs she breaks in her wake. She's doing the best she can but she's clearly not fireproof and is thus limited. You're impressed though, that her more monstrous form is capable of that kind of speed through the water.

Blowing past the first leg of the crab you immediately meet resistance from Crab'thulu. Spears of ice fly through the water past you, growing quickly into massive walls of the stuff as you move. You try to help Milly with maneuvering around the sudden obstacles, but you're both caught by surprised when one of the walls propels a group of stone spiders at your team. You twist and jink as much as you can but still get scraped by one of the crabs in passing, Milly's flesh tearing more readily than your scales.

The damage slows you down but you're past the interdiction zone and into the crab's blindspot again. Milly pulls up, assisted by you and then releases you once you're on target. You watch this time for the crab moving, and mercifully it doesn't, though now there are stone crabs all over the scar zone, waiting for you. As you pass into the aura of flame you kick your tail harder and brace to tear into the weakened flesh.

And then you pass through it, the surface of the material popping like a blister. You catch onto flesh again as you pass deeper into the crab and you spot rock crabs falling in with you. Above the hole you made is already sealing over.

Not in this part of them!

She's got a really good gash that goes from shoulder to hip. She's not bleeding out but she'll have trouble moving. You're not sure if she can get out of the crab's attack zone with injuries like that.

>>40143180
Thanks for coming! If it makes you feel better this gives me time to improve those innards to something more entertaining.
