As you sweat under the limpid amber gaze of Shoukaku in the middle of a tacky Gundam theme restaurant, you marvel at how eager you'd been to take this little excursion.

You'd never been bad with women; or even one of those skippers so far gone that he'd refold his dinner napkin if the kitchen hadn't gotten the creases just right. You'd been dragged along to a few Official State Functions precisely because of your ability to loosen up and make decent conversation, in fact. And from the tactful way Shoukaku had greeted you in the officer's mess and extended her invitation (so subtly you weren't sure what it was an invitation TO,) you'd gathered she was similar. But now she's sitting with tense shoulders and pleading eyes, aware that she's transgressed the boundaries of dinner conversation.

If you deflect the question beneath the question, you don't doubt she'll pick up on it and segue neatly into safer territory. It's proper manners for dinner chat – and your implied orders, for that matter.

Don't rock the boat.

Don't say a word when you catch Hornet staring into space, pencil tracing the shape of an arrow into the notepad so hard for so long it shines glossy with graphite. Pretend you don't notice Arizona glancing upward every time she hears a buzz overhead, or that subtle pat every five minutes, like a man checking for his wallet – except she's checking for her weapon.

Your dry lips stick together as you reply. “Why do they make them humanoid?”

She nods ever so slightly as you squirm in her amber gaze.

“That's pretty common in the genre,” you continue. “Anthropomorphizing a combat vehicle, I mean. Oftentimes they're not mass-production units, like just another tank. They're... special.”

Shoukaku's brow crinkles, her shoulders still tense. “More... powerful? Or sophisticated?”

“Have you heard of a show called Space Battleship Yamato?”

The cool, sinking chill of mortification spreads through your chest the instant the words leave your mouth, mirrored by the widening of Shoukaku's eyes.

“Y-Yamato?”

“The plot,” you hear yourself say, merciless matter-of-fact reporting; “is that the Yamato's wreck is recovered from the dried-up seabed of the Pacific and used as the hull of a spaceship built to take the fight to attacking aliens.”

Shoukaku's expression is blank. “... when?”

“The eighties.”

Her voice is low and uncertain now, falling to her tightly clasped hands. “I thought... they said the war was forgotten. Nobody wanted to – to remember all that.”

Leaning on your folded arms, you fix your eyes on the salt shaker lest the slight tremor in your bones reach your voice. “Yamato was a symbol, Shoukaku. Industrial might, engineering genius...” you rally and press on - “a creation so massive and complex it can't help but embody every principle and ideal of its builders in its frame. Losing something like that -” for a moment the Higgins flashes through your mind - “it's a wound. When we lost Arizona, her name became a rallying cry for recruiters, a national monument. We still fly a flag from her mast.”

That's about when Shoukaku begins to cry.

She had thought that humanity had forgotten all about the sunken ships and, on a larger level, that they viewed them only as weapons, both back then and in their current form. This was the direction of her questioning us regarding the Gundam; whether the mobile suits, being humaniform weapons, meant there was no particular meaning for the ship girls to have come back as human as well.

In short, her question was " What do you think of us?" With 'us' meaning both humanity in general and, perhaps, Settle in particular.

An involuntary shiver goes down your spine, paralyzing your mind for a moment. “Uh?”

She finally wipes away her tears with her cheap paper napkin, looking a bit bashful. “I thought w-we'd been f-forgotten. The war was so p-painful, and, we... we didn't do very well.” She takes a deep breath, visibly composing herself before meeting your gaze again. You can see the tears still brimming behind her eyes, but she dams them behind another bright smile. “I-I'm sorry, Admiral Settle, I shouldn't have put you on the spot like that.”

You fold your arms on the table and lean on them, studying the placemats again. “You wanted to know. Hell, you deserve to know.”

“That's not what everyone else seems to think.”

You bite your lip and remain silent.

She rests one cheek in her hand, studying you leisurely. “Admiral... have you told Arizona what you just told me?”

“Uh.” You shake your head. “It's different.”

“How?”

“She hasn't asked.”

“I didn't ask my Admiral, either,” Shoukaku points out. “When someone is counting on you, you want them to think you're rock-solid dependable.”

You swallow past a dry tongue. “Yeah, I can understand that.”

“So she doesn't know she's...” her eyes cut to the side shyly at this, “you know... loved? By everyone?”

“It's not easy to talk about,” you say quietly. “She hasn't said a single word since she came back. I don't... I figure it's her right to bring it up, if she wants.”

“Well, how do you feel about her?”

You blink. “What.”

“How do you feel about her?”

“Uh.”

“I hear she trounced Kongou pretty handily this morning because she thought they were trying to kidnap you, or something.”

“That was just a mis-”

“And ran halfway across base carrying you like a casualty.”

You flush at that. “A misunderstanding!”

She grins at you. “She seems to think the world of you – but I suppose I would to, if you pulled a live shell out of me.”

You feel that flush deepening as you grope for a good reply and come up empty. “Uh, I guess?”

“So, how do you feel about her?” Her eyes seem almost liquid – or maybe it's those tears again, so close to the surface now. “Why did you pull a live shell out of her with your own hands?”

I was one of the folks who helped turn the USS Hornet (CV-12) into a museum ship. We had some strange encounters on that ship, but they were pretty much all benevolent. She seemed to like helping people out when they were aboard. On one occasion we were sweeping the ship's spaces before shutting her down for the night, and needed some chain to help secure a security gate on the brow, which lead from the ship to the pier. One of the guys on the sweep jokingly said "Hornet, give us chain!" as we started to head back up from the lower decks. On our way out, we entered a space that we had just been in earlier and had found empty. Neatly coiled on the deck was a gleaming length of chain.

Yeah, CV-8 was an amazing ship. At one point she held the approaches to Guadalcanal alone when the two other carriers with her had to head back due to battle damage.

CV-12 was hardcore as fuck though. In 16 months of heavy combat her air groups shot down or destroyed 1400 aircraft and sank or heavily damaged 1.2 million tons of enemy shipping. The only damage she ever took was from a typhoon on the way to Okinawa. She's the carrier that picked up Apollo's 11 and 12 when they got back from the Moon, too.

She frowns. “But isn't that *their* job?”

“If you saw an officer laughing like a lunatic next to a few hundred pounds of live munitions with a damaged fuze, would you stick around?”

She blanches. “I suppose not.”

“Yeah. Arizona's...” you take a deep breath - “her...” you tap your abdomen, and hold up your thumb and forefinger to indicate something tiny. “You know, her-”

“... ovaries?”

“FARIES!” you exclaim sharply, making heads turn around the room. “Hergoddamnfaries,” you growl under your breath as you blush. “I just hoisted away when they'd handled everything.”

“Mmmhmm,” Shoukaku hums through her coy smile, looking quite amused. “It seems you already know some of our inner secrets. But that doesn't explain why you were there in the first place.”

“Arizona is my responsibility. Mine, and mine alone.” You sigh, resisting the urge to slump over the table again. “I've already left one ship in a drydock she'll probably never leave. I don't intend to lose another.”

Shoukaku seems to gaze clear through you, a thoughtful, searching look on her face. The waitress returns with your steaks and drinks, serves you and vanishes again. You exchange pleasantries with the waitress, but Shoukaku never blinks till she's gone again.

“You miss your old ship that much?”

You shrug. “She was my first command. Spent all my sea time on her – half of it patching her back together. She was getting old, after all. Hard not to get attached.”

“I had one of the girls who's good with that... web thing look for information on that. Apparently everyone's calling you a hero for the battle in Los Angeles bay.”

You blanch – of all the things you didn't want coming up, this topped the list.

It would be unpleasant for those inside the magazine (LOL uranium oxide particulates) but no nuclear boom. Nuclear weapons are very carefully designed NOT to do that, and are damned hard to get to initiate correctly in the first place. That's simply-but-poor-yeild bun-type Little Boy was used untested, but the implosion-triggered Fat Man got the Trinity test beforehand.

Pretty sure that mostly applies to implosion-type devices, which are very difficult to properly initiate.

AFAIK, though, gun-type devices can go off by accident, as they require only one explosive charge to initiate properly, as opposed to a perfectly coordinated spherical shell of explosives.

Yes and no.

When I had started out in the gator fleet (amphibs), I had envisioned something entirely different from what it was actually like. By my second year in, I was desperate for a change of platform; preferably a carrier.

By the time I finished my four years before the mast, I was horribly depressed leaving. I actually wanted to stay.

Of course, some of that is rose-tinted nostalgia, so take of that what you will.

That was no accident. Crazy face offs between US and Soviet ships happened all the time. US Destroyers in the Pacific in the late 1950s and early 1960s had some equally intense encounters with Soviet Subs, though the US was the side fucking with them in that case. Sort of a "Yeah, we see you motherfucker." ritual. The subs we had checking out facilities in the Kamchatka Peninsula and Sea of Okhotsk got mock depth-charges called firecrackers dropped on them in an effort to make them surface. There was a lot of brinkmanship.

You shake your head. “It's bullshit.”

She looks surprised. “What?”

“Every victory needs a hero,” you explain. “And... LA was the first battle. Or one of the first. Depends on if you count minutes from the first abyssal manifestation or the first exchange of fire.” You shrug. “They didn't know anything about you girls, yet, so there was just me. And people were scared shitless, you know? They needed someone. Now they have you.”

She giggles. “Yeah. A lot of the girls get fan mail.”

You blink. “Come again?”

She giggles melodiously. “You didn't know? The Corporal goes through it every morning. We all thought it was strange because he'd bring the boxes in, but there were no censure marks in any of the letters.” She shrugs. “We still don't know what he's doing, but Goto explained that they don't do that kind of thing anymore.”

“So who is...?”

“Young people, mostly,” she says. “The ones that see us on TV or the news. I thought they all looked at us like... you know. Television stars. Like Naka wants to be.” She brushes her hair back over one ear.

“So why did you think you'd been forgotten?”

“Oh, the people writing the letters...” she blushes a little - “they're not writing about our old battles.”

“So about your current ones, then?” You open a straw and drop it in your drink.

“Future ones, actually,” Shoukaku says. “They send a lot of requests for one-on-one night torpedo duels.

She shakes her head. “Nope! Some of us get really sweet letters asking us to marry them.”

“... you?”

She smirks, and shakes her head. “They just want to give me a full spread below the waterline – oh dear, I'm sorry,” she says, covering her mouth as the damn soda goes down the wrong pipe. To your horror this triggers hiccups, and Shoukaku can only giggle helplessly through both hands, eyes closed with mirth as you gulp down more soda to drown them.

You finally get down to dinner – it turns out that even a theme cafe can make a good steak, if you pay twice what it's worth. (That's what the Navy credit card is for, of course.) At length, Shoukaku picks up the conversation again.

“So, Admiral, do you have anyone waiting for you at home?”

“Me? Oh, no.”

“Really? A man like you?”

STORIES FROM THE FLEET PART THREE: REVENGE OF THE BOOZE

Beer (or alcohol in general) and sailors have gone together since ye auld sailinge dayes. It has been a sailors' comforter, cure-all, psychologist, confidante, lover, and best friend since time imemorial. At one time, alcohol rations were served aboard US naval ships; this is, sadly, no longer the case. So, sailors make do with whatever refreshments are available when in port.

This (short) tale takes place in Sasebo, Japan, where I was stationed. It was sometime in the middle of summer, and hotter and more humid than... something. It was fucking hot out, to say the least. We had been in port for a few days, and I had just recently been advanced to 2nd Class Petty Officer. Celebrations amongst my division and firends had already occurred.

One of the perks of advancement to PO2 at the time was a lifting of "Cinderella Liberty", the curfew put in place to keep rowdy enlisted folks from staying out too late. As I was now free of that, I had decided to enjoy my newfound freedom and had decided on staying out drinking. That was my first mistake. My second had been wearing flip-flops out that night.

I started drinking in at around 1800-1900 in an area of Sasebo called "Sailor Town", known as such for the propensity of nautically-affilitaed drinking establishments and an almost continuous Shore Patrol presence. I slowly meandered my way through the bars, getting progressively more intoxicated as the night went on. I got my fair share of free beers from fellow shipmates congratulating me on my recent advancement.

Sometime around 0030, I had drunkenly decided that I should think about heading back for the night. I still lived aboard the ship; and while I was free from curfew, I still wanted to catch up on sleep. I think. I was pretty hammered at the time.

At around 0200 I left the last bar. Most of the bars had closed shop for the night, and I didn't want to be That Guy keeping the bartender there later than necessary. So, I started walking back to the ship, a good two miles away. After a few minutes of this, I suddenly recalled that I hadn't gone for a run in a fairly long time.

So, with the desire to engage in physical exercise firmly lodged in my alcohol-fueled brain, I took off for a run back to the ship. After roughly a hundred yards, I realized two things: one, my choice in footwear kept me from making good time, and two; my god, these fucking flip-flops, they're fucking LOUD when you run in them. I found my performance increased drastically when I took them off.

Now completely barefoot, I found myself not just running through the streets of Sasebo, but -sprinting-. The emotions of the night, as well as the past few days were soaring through me. My promotion; my newfound duties and privleges; my good friends on the ship...
>>

Yeah, I was fucking DRUNK. Our ship was moored pierside in a Japanese shipyard adjacent to the base. I sprinted over a whole mile barefoot to the main gate to the shipyard. A few hundred feet away, in clear view of the gate guard (a Japanese National), I stopped, but my flip-flops back on, and casually sauntered up to the gate.

After showing a very amused guard my ID, I proceeded through the gate for about a hundred feet, took my flip-flops off, and started sprinting again. The roads and sidewalks of the shipyard are old, torn, and covered in loose gravel and rocks.

And I did it all barefoot. I made it back to my ships' moorage in record time (two miles in fifteen minutes). As I stood at the foot of the brow, I came to two distinct realizations: With alcohol, I Can Do Anything. And holy shit I don't want to go back to the ship drunk I don't want to go to captain's mast I'm fuckedfuckedfucked.

There was a laundromat right next to our ship, so I ducked in there and slept until about 0800. No one caught me (or at least said anything). Thank god it was a weekend.

well seeing from the nightmare.

The Abyssal launched a surprise attack on LA, Settle's ship was the first to respond along with a coast guard Cutter, most likely a Hamilton-class out of San Diego.

Abyssal had been wiping the floor with them and the coast guard's pilot managed to put it's engine's to full right as he died, ramming the coast guard ship into the Ironclad Abyssal and leaving it too stuck to evade, which gave Settle enough of a chance to fire everything he had left at it.

He sank the abyssal but in the process blew the coast guard vessel up along with it, killing whatever was left of the Complement of 167 aboard.

“Like me? A career sailor who's out of port seven or eight months a year?” You chuckle. “I was captain of an Arleigh-Burke. We call them destroyers, because they've got that hull shape, but they're more like old-fashioned cruisers – by which I mean always deployed. They make jokes about how long the deployments are, even. Even boomer crews get six months on, six months off.” You shrug. “I never minded, though. I wanted to be a sea captain. I was married to my ship, really.”

“But after L- uh, the publicity, I mean-”

You chuckle. “A military man pushing forty with a bum leg doesn't have the same appeal as a mysterious young beauty like you, I'm afraid.” You polish off your steak, forcing yourself not to wolf it down – it's been a long day, and it's actually decently cooked. “Well, that was a lot better than I was expecting from a Gundam cafe, I admit.”

“I thought the meals were supposed to come with little action figures, or something?” Shoukaku marveled. “The destroyers are bringing them home all the time. The staff usually gives them extra.”

“Oh,” you say, “those are McDonalds happy meals, I think.” You glance towards the front desk. “Bet you ten bucks they sell plastic model kits of the Gundams here, though, if you want one.”

She shakes her head with a smile. “Better not. I'm not very good with things like that. Goto might like one, though.”
>>
>>40141751

“He builds models?”

“Yeah. He has a collection, but he had to stop displaying them in his office.”

“Some new regulation?”

“Inazuma walked in on him without knocking while he was putting the finishing touches on a model of USS Bonefish.”

“... oh, shit.”

“Quite. Poor girl hid in a closet and it took us hours to lure her out of there. So maybe he'd like a gunpla.”

You ask after the rest of Desdiv 6 – from the one you met last night, they seem like a cheerful bunch of girls, and you wonder idly if they'd be a good influence on Willie Dee. Shoukaku is happy to talk about them, explaining that they fight and play much like ordinary girls do – their one quirk seems to be a newfound love of old 50s and 60s American cowboy movies.

“Cowboys? Really?”

“I think destroyers really identify with that free-ranging, devil-may-care gunslinger thing,” she says. “A few of them even have toy pistols and bandannas and such; they chase each other playing cowboys and Indians.”

“Sounds adorable.”

“Mostly. Hibiki really likes this one movie; she got her hands on a harmonica and just kept blowing this... I hesitate to call it a tune...” she shakes her head. “What movies do you like, by the way? I'm trying to get into the new age, but I just don't know where to start.”

The conversation is flowing smoothly, the soda was replaced by beer at some point and it seems the evening is finally a success – now's a good time to pick Shoukaku's brain about... well, about anything you want, really.

It's a technically correct translation of a complex sentence.
Remember that Nasu loves metaphors, wordplay, and concepts.
As with most languages, it's difficult to carry that over when translating.
He's using "correct" as in factually correct, but "right" more so towards what's morally correct i.e. He's saying "what is the logical choice doesn't mean it's the morally correct choice"

Sammy is a Butler class destroyer right? She would have a hedgehog launcher. The PT corgis would also have depth charges but they were the "toss kegs overboard" kind.

Also I was curious so I went and did some googling on hedgehogs. Canada had the 5th largest navy at the end of WW2 but all of it was smaller ships like destroyers, frigates and corvettes for ASW. So depth charges and hedgehogs were almost standard issue. Frigates are comparable to destroyer escorts but corvettes are tiny. The Flower-Class corvettes used by the brits and canadians could only do 16 knots and had trouble in rough seas.

Can you imagine if a corvette came back as a shipgirl? She would be a THIRD smaller than Sammy! Would they even come back as girls at all or be some kind of animal like the corgis?

>>
>>40142398
Wrong. The Barb derailed and destroyed a train on the coast of Japan by placing her scuttling charges under a section of the track and rigging wiring on the rails so that the weight of the train would complete the circuit and set off the charges. The crew had to threaten to relieve the Captain of command to keep him from going ashore with the landing party because he was gung-ho as fuck and they didn't want him dying if things went wrong.

The Hedgehog is basically a battery of spigot mortars; While traditional depth charges are basically a 55-gallon drum set on a timer (the 'depth' part), a Hedgehog is an array of about forty smaller charges that are each contact-fused.

Because the armor of a submarine is non-existant, and all you really need to do is breach the pressure hull, the many-small-bombs of a hedgehog was far more effective than the one-big-bomb of a depth charge.

Now that you know that the Hedgehog is basically forty spigot mortars on the same fuse, well, why do you *think* they stuck them on tanks?
>>
>>40142635
Yeah, that makes a lot more sense than the thought of a giant drum launcher slapped onto a tank
>>
>>40142683
To be honest, the idea of a Depth Charge Catapult jerry-rigged by the mechanics in the field would be hilarious.
>>

>>40142722
Well, they're not exactly giant drums, but they're close enough. The important part is that they were depth-fused rather than contact fused, so their deployment was basically glorified dynamite-fishing.

>>
>>40142713
>>40142768

Seconding The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors. It's basically Sammy B, a few other DEs and DDs, and a few escort carriers in a point blank gun and torpedo duel with a huge Japanese surface taskf orce, including the Yamato. It's like the US Navy's version of the Spartans at Thermopylae.

The same author wrote a good book about the naval fighting in the Solomons called Neptune's Inferno. Great read on perhaps the nastiest surface fighting campaign of the war.
>>
>>40142865
Crewmen threw potatoes
The IJN thought they were grenades so they ran, givin the o'bannon chance to strike her conning tower.

Oh yeah, i think the obannon rammed the sub.
>>
>>40142768

The opening quote- the very first words on the very first page of that book- usually kinda get me to tear up.

For anyone wondering, they're Lieutenant Commander Robert W. Copeland's words to the crew of the USS Samuel B Roberts.

"This will be a fight against overwhelming odds from which survival cannot be expected. We will do what damage we can."
>>
>>40142842

DD and 11 sub were too close for normal weapons. So sailors on the DD just started lobbing what was at hand at them. Including a basket of fucking potatoes.

11s though said potatoes were grenades and busied themselves chucking them overboard instead of readying their deck gun. DD was thus able to pull away and sink them 11s.
>>
>>40142865
>>40142892

Well, if I got the story right....

The O'Bannon saw a Japanese Sub and decided to ram it. At the last moment, the officers decided that the sub may be a minelayer, and the rudder was turned hard to avoid the collision. This action brought the destroyer directly alongside the sub. As the Japanese sailors attempted to man their three-inch deck gun, the O'Bannon's deck hands, not having side arms, grabbed potatoes from nearby storage bins and pelted the Japanese with them.
>>
>>40142865
>Jap sub surfaces directly next to the boat, guns can't depress
>Jap sub's crew begins to ready deck gun
>Crew freaks out and in desperation starts throwing potatoes at them
>Sub crew thinks spuds are grenades and stops reading deck gun to throw them off
>This gives O'bannon enough time to turn away and engage with guns.
>>
>>40142912
>"This will be a fight against overwhelming odds from which survival cannot be expected. We will do what damage we can."
God damn, son
>>
>>40142878
Wasn't exactly a rare incident. The US Navy was going all out with unrestricted sub warfare, making sure no Jap ship in the water was spared.
>>
>>40142897
It also talks about the men involved, not just the ships.

The Sammy's captain, for example, was a huge-ass Cherokee who swore an oath to never again run from the japanese navy after the last ship he was on was sunk by them.

If the St Lo comes back, will her fairies have a tendency to yell DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA at the top of their tiny little lungs when making dummy runs?

>Attack Japanese sub with potatoes

>>
>>40142959

>>
Wow hedgehogs were a lot bigger than I thought they were. 65lb shells! About half of that is TNT filling. That's way more boom than you would find in most artillery shells until you get into cruiser class guns. Not quite KV-2 levels of boom but you can easily imagine what it would do to your average sub if one landed on the roof.

>>40142331
>>40142140
Yeah geese are jerks. Funny thing is Hate really could put them on a leash because they moult their feathers every summer and lose the ability to fly.

>>40142865
Japanese sub surfaces next to US ship too close and low to shoot with the ships turrets. Japanese sailors start turning the deck gun on them. US sailors grab the potatoes they had been peeling and start throwing them at the sub. The sub's crew apparently thought they were grenades because they ran back into the sub and fled. The sub was later sunk by depth charges.
>>
>>40142946
The battle off Samar was called the finest hour of the American Navy for damn good reasons.

The Yamato alone outweighed the entire American fleet, and I'm pretty sure its gun turrets had individually more tonnage than the American destroyers
>>
either Shokaku's answering a lot of questions, or Planefag up and died.
