You are Thomas Cairn and, believe it or not, you used to be normal. Now everything is weird, and fantastic, and scary. Your dad was an infamous superhero known as The Red Rider. You always thought you took after Mom, but apparently not. Like The Red Rider, you can communicate with technology and think at the speed of light. Two months ago, your dad was found dead in an alley. In his will, he left you $30,000 and his secret lair. You were recently accepted on a full-ride scholarship to Central Cosmopolis Institute, but while packing, one of your dad's "co-workers" showed up.

Previous Thread: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/40199553/

Mom opens up the door and you hear from downstairs, "How nice to see you Mr. Salvos! Come on in."

You have some questions for this "Mr. Salvos" if that is his name. He said at the funeral that he worked with your dad, but never said in what respect. Walking down the stairs, you see the tall, well-dressed man you know as John Salvos talking with your mom. His suit is absolutely pristine, but it seems to be in stark contrast to a massive bruise on his face. Mom has to have asked him about it.

He turns to you with an odd amount of haste, "Hello Thomas, I just heard the good news, I know you'll have a great time at CCI. I even know some of the professors. But I know you've probably heard that a million times, so how are you doing?"

Mom answers before you have the chance, "Well, he has been helping people fix things. I swear, he gets more like James every day. He helped Ms. Abernathy fix her car just last week, turns out that the fan belt was missing and you would never guess where it was..."

And there goes Mom on a tangent again, she does that a lot but it's fine, this will give you time to collect your thoughts, Somehow, you don't think that will take long.

"I'm sorry to interrupt Mom, but why are you here Mr. Salvos?", you are eager to get your answers. You have been going over possibilities for a while, and you have it narrowed down. He is either The Swordsman, Wrench, or he actually doesn't know anything.

He considers your question for a bit before pulling an envelope out of his jacket, "Your dad told me to give this to you when you graduate. He always knew you were going to go to a good school. Heck, when we were working it was almost the only thing he talked about.", He hands you the envelope and pulls another one out, "This one is for you Janice, he said that he wanted this one delivered at the same time, it struck me as weird. It was almost like..." , He grimaces for a second before returning to his friendly demeanor, "Well, I have to get going, I have a few more things I need to do today. Good luck at college kid."

You decide to open the envelope right now, and inside it is a key and a letter that reads as follows.

Dear Thomas,

By the time you get this letter I will be dead, and you most certainly have checked my storage unit and found out about my secret identity. I wish I could say that I didn't know what was going to happen, but you know enough about my powers to see that would be a lie. Mr. Salvos handed this letter to you because I trust him, I worked with him after all, and the key that came with this letter is to my safehouse in Cosmopolis. Yes, I knew you were going to be accepted to CCI and CCU, and inevitably choose CCI. The reason I was murdered is that I was close to the truth, there is a supervillain called Menace, but nobody knows what he can do or how he does it. I was investigating him, all my notes are at the safehouse in Cosmopolis. When you get there talk to Professor Brend, he will know where it is, and he will help you figure out your gift. You no doubt found my schematics on my computer, they were some developments I was working on to deal with Menace. I will not force you to become who I was, but those notes and schematics are important, so if you don't want to be The Red Rider, give the notes to Mr. Salvos.

Love,
James Cairn

Closing the letter, you look at the key, a simple metal deal with no number or anything. But on the back of the envelope is a phone number. Observing it and cross-referencing what you know about phone numbers, you know it is a cell phone in Comet City. Probably Mr. Salvos.

You know what, you've been wrong before, so why not call it to be sure. You dial the number into the phone and it rings about 3 times before someone picks up.

Mr. Salvos' voice on the other end confirms your suspicions, "Hello? Who is this?"

You clear your throat and decide you shouldn't be rude, "Hey, uh, this is Thomas. I saw this number on the back of the envelope and wanted to see who it was."

"Hello? I can't hear you."

"It's Thomas Cairn, I-"

"Haha, got ya, this is John Salvos, I'll get back to you later if you leave a message."

You hang up after that, and decide that you should probably go back to packing. You head upstairs and decide those schematics are probably worth another look if your dad mentioned them in the letter. Your dad never was one to bring something up if it wasn't important, it brings you back to take your son to work day back when you were five. When you were with him at the office and asked what he was doing on the computer he would just say, "Boring stuff."

Booting up you computer and plugging in the hard drive, you open up those files again, and can't help but notice that they seem a bit more complete than when you downloaded them. Your suspicions are confirmed when you see that they were modified 20 minutes ago. probably another security measure from your dad. There are 3 schematics you can research.

The Potential Engine looks really cool, and it could produce functionally unlimited energy. Unfortunately, it is most definitely NOT a cheap thing to build. Half of these materials are on a very exclusive list to get, and the other half are just plain expensive. You could probably slap something together, but it would be rough, and it probably would break down if taken more then 100 ft. in the air.

Let's look at those Micro-Actuators, they seem cool, but it depends on your dad's definition of micro. Surprisingly, the big drawback is that they take a while to make, they cost next to nothing. A pound of them would probably run a hundred dollars, but that many would take a while to build. Maybe an assembly machine, or you could get a bunch of people together to make them in an assembly line. Either way, they are incredibly resilient in design and would definitely be in your price and timerange.

God, you got on a roll and managed to make a whole pound in a day, that's ridiculous. And to think, you had most of the supplies lying around. Now all you have to do is activate them. With a tap of the enter key on your computer, the jar of Actuators springs to life. It shapes itself into a rough sphere and you see that you did a wonderful job, they work faster than you can keep track of. For a bunch of robots made with pocket change, they are remarkably efficient. You must have refined the design a bit in practice

>Congratulations, the d100 was for cost, the d10 was for quality. These qualify under Super quality, they are really efficient. You have a pound of Actuators.

It took a while but now that the sun is down you think you should get ready to turn in for the night, maybe show Mom? Is that a good idea, you remember all those superhero movies where they didn't tell anyone, but all you did was revolutionize the field of robotics.

Messing around some more with the Actuators, you find that they can push with enough force to knock over a desk, and they can throw and grab things, even when in small numbers. Eventually you get it down to a science, using your technopathy you can move them with nothing but a thought. It reminds you of The Pied Piper, that weird villain who could do basically the same thing with rats. But this is less disgusting and unsanitary, God what a freak that guy was, you guess that he got his powers from his terrible smell. Wait, what were you thinking about, oh right the Actuators. They stopped and went inert when your mind wandered, and it seems like that is getting more and more common the more you use your powers. Maybe you need some sleep, yeah probably, but you have so much more you could do with these. You could patent them, but how do you do that, you always heard the Patent Office was a grind. Maybe you should research it, but wait the Actuators are on the floor and that isn't good, Mom might see them. Why are you hiding them from her again? Ah, right Superhero movies! Okay, just breathe, keep on track, pick up the, uhm, Actuators, that's it, that's the word. You probably pushed a little too hard, you're new to this whole thing. Makes sense, computers occasionally need to be put in sleep mode, why are you different?

Calling down to Mom you realize it is about midnight, she shouldn't be up this late, "Hey Mom, I'm going to bed, are you okay?", Why would she be up late? She doesn't work, your grandpa is independently wealthy and he sends you checks to live on since Dad's accident.

"Yeah Honey, just reading that letter Mr. Salvos gave me, it was from James, he said a lot about when he met me. It's all old stuff from when we got married, I didn't even know he memorized our wedding vows." She seems like she is on the verge of tears, but it also looks like some are from joy, others sorrow. Wait, how do you know that? Oh well, must be another part of your "gift".

"It's okay Mom, he's in a better place now, and he always loved you. Why would he leave you a letter if he didn't", It is a solid chain of logic, Dad never hid his feelings about stuff. Wait, no, stop getting on tangents.

"I know Honey, but I can't help but think he knew this would happen to him. I mean, the letters, the life insurance, he had a will at 45. I don't know what he was doing, but I don't want to, I want him to still be the James I know.", you can appreciate that, she isn't a superhero or anything of the sort. But she isn't dumb, she probably had suspicions.

"I always thought maybe he was in the mob. But that doesn't make sense at all, unless they wanted their money kept track of. I know that he wasn't just an accountant but I want to believe it. He probably told you in his letter, he flat out told me he had secrets in mine. I want his murderer brought to justice as much as anyone else, but I also don't want to keep dredging up these feelings. Just, have fun at college, but call me occasionally, I'll miss you.", she kisses you on the forehead, you never thought about what she was going through, strikes you as a little ironic. "Now go to bed sweetie, you have to leave tomorrow."

"Goodnight Mom." you say halfheartedly, trudging up the stairs. You practically collapse into bed and sleep greets you like an old friend.

In your attempt to roll the dice, you get too excited and throw them violently at the gameboard. Not only do you end up messing everything on the board up, but your wrist is fairly sore now. You may have pulled something, though it's likely not serious.

Oh.
Also a d4 went through your GM's eye.
He's dead now.

Rolled 3769 (1d10000)

Just rolling for no reason. Now if I rolled a d10000 and got a one that would be fake, but what I did was 5% chance.

The alarm blares and you jump out of bed, you seem to be a lot more focused and awake than you should be. You should probably identify which element of your powers caused you that much exertion. But that is for a later date, you finish packing up your Actuators, computer, and hard drive. All out-of-state students need to show up 2 weeks early to get settled, so you have to drive today. You put some coffee in a Thermos for the drive and eat some cereal. You put all your bags in the car and say your goodbyes, then you set off. Away from Comet City, away from home, away from it's crazy villains and outrageous heroes, you have to say, you didn't expect to miss it this much. Especially after you pass the graveyard.

You finally exit the city limits and then the state lines, entering Cosmopolis at a surprising rate, while your mind whirs with what you need to do. Get a patent on the Micro-Actuators, find Professor Brend, get to the safehouse, get the notes on Menace. Then what give them to Mr. Salvos, that's what Dad said to do. But he said to do that if you don't want to be The Red Rider, does that mean you have a choice?

You are violently ripped from your thoughts when you hear honking behind you, it seems you're in the city now, that means you're almost there. You look around and see beautiful buildings surrounding the streets, every one looking both important on it's own, but worthless when brought into perspective. Before you know it, you're at a cloistered assembly of glass buildings on a grassy lot.

Central Cosmopolis Institute.

thanks for your time.

One recommendation don't know if you're already doing this.
Type up, in note pad, word what ever. Because you may lose it if just typing it right into your browser and something goes wrong. Of course if that's even an option.

Doing great so far OP. You might want to write your posts in word or something to prevent losing them in the middle of an update though

Word crashed, but that's what comes with having a shitty computer and internet, I'll probably type it up on notepad next time, seems more reliable.

Next game will probably be tomorrow, but I will post a one hour notice on my twitter.
