The cold, damp air of the dungeon pricks at your skin but you ignore it. You stare at your own reflection in the still water of the underground lake, your own frustration evident in your eyes. You are vaguely aware that you are a creature known as a mimic, a shape shifting, living trap. At will you can switch between a humanoid form and that have a wooden treasure chest to lure in prey. Hunger gnaws at your guts and reminds you that your own purpose is to eat. Maybe that's why you're so horrible at making clothes.

You've sat near that lake for a while know, desperately trying to turn the strips of cloth into...Something. So far you've only managed to wrap them loosely around your body. You are only a day old and you're clever enough to know your own species and how to lure adventurers to your death and you can't make a shirt? How in the world do they do it? Aren't they supposed to just...Fit together somehow? Wait...Is this their skin? Are you wearing their skin? Your face has flushed red with frustration and you stomp around the room, mind racing with how to make use of this junk.

You've spent quite a while in this little room, after falling asleep. Experimenting with the various things you found on that adventurer thingy. You found a sword, which is apparently some sort of sharp pointy thing (But not as pointy as your teeth) that adventures use to kill stuff. It also makes a funny wooshy sound when you swing it really fast. You also have a shield, which is...a round wood thing. You don't know what it's for, actually. Only that it's called a shield. There was also a bunch of little pieces of iron. They didn't smell like anything special, but you ended up eating them anyway. They weren't all that tasty and didn't fill you up any but once you ate one you just sorta kept going.
>>
>>40244301
Echoing from somewhere far down the hall, you can hear mumbled voices. They sorta sound like adventurers, but you don't really know what anything other than adventurers sound like. There isn't really anything left to do here, and you realize that you've been here for a long time...

>Welcome back to Mimic girl quest! Last time: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/39813507/

Scary voices! Writing.
>>
Listening closely to the voices in the distance, you can't quite make out what they're saying, but you're pretty sure you can pick out multiple voices. An instinctual fear grips you, and forces down the hunger. You can't deal with that many people! Your head jerks about the mostly bare lake room, and you snatch up your things, fleeing to another.

It takes you a few precious moments of searching but you finally find a little spot, wreathed in shadows. A little nook you can fit into. Scrambling into it, you shift into the most plane boring box you can think of- which unfortunately still looks kinda like a chest. Taking some deep breaths, you wait, eye pressed against the iron lock, peering through the keyhole.

Voices inch closer, and closer. It seems that two of them had broken off from the rest. As they come closer you can start making out what they're saying.

"...ead, I'm telling you. You don't come in here alone and expect everything to go great."
"I don't know, we didn't really find anything, it could have been anything-"
"Oh yeah, that giant puddle was probably just red paint!"
"Maybe it was the boar's?"
"You really think those have that much blood?"

They continue bickering as they enter your room. Two adventures, a bit better equipped. Leather armor, shinier swords, fancy capes... They start poking lightly around the room, looking for something. "I'm not getting paid enough for this..." One of them mumbles.

Wooo mimic girl quest, glad your back chest-chan

You stay quiet, watching the adventures with interest. There's a moment where you think they almost see you- but he passes by without notice. Once they've gone over the room they collect themselves again. "Seriously, nothing." The cynical one spits, looking rather annoyed. "Not even something to fight. This dungeon has been nothing but shit so far." The other one scratches his head. "I could've sworn there was a..." He trails off. "Look, let's just get back with the others. If we don't group up soon they'll head down without us." The other one grumbles an agreement and they both depart. You catch a glimpse of something on the waist of one of them- A golden....thing, strapped by his sword. It looks like the symbol that was on the young adventurer's amulet.

A few moments later, you're feeling safe again, and you scamper from your spot. Wandering back through the halls you can hear the mumble of voices a bit closer, but you can't pick anything out- you don't think they're coming your way, though. Safe where you are, you start calming down a bit, but the hunger comes back again- the ever present pain. You clutch your bag close, as if that'll bring you comfort.

An idea- A stroke of genius! Maybe. There's too many of them but..Maybe...You dig around in the pack and pull out an un-eaten iron chip. It's shiny- with the flickering torchlight this'll probably catch some attention. Perfect!

You inch closer to the room with the adventurers- shadows filter through the doorway nearby, the sheer amount of voices too much for you to filter through. You take the little iron chip and slide it into place- waiting for a a moment to see if it's right. A shadow moves. You run down the hallways, head snapping around as you think of the perfect place to sit, and shift into a shiny chest.

You see a figure, wrapped in dark cloth sneak into the room, glancing at the odd iron chip. He looks around- and looks directly at you. A wicked grin flashes over his face- and you can feel your own jaw mimic it. He creeps closer, making sure no one else saw, and reaches to open you-

A snapping of jaws, breaking bones. The splatter of blood. He puts up a fight. He tries to scream but your arm snaps out and silences him, you tear his limbs, you rend deep gashes in his body- and he still struggles, until you push forward with a final crunch and sever his spine.

It's mostly all a blur. You aren't really sure what you're doing as you silence the hunger, rending the body down to nothing. Things come back into focus. You're covered in blood, again. There's a bone in your mouth, and you're hopelessly chewing on it. The hunger is only god for a moment.

And then..You see it. Another figure. And fear grips your heart like a vice. You hear mumbles of "Fascinating..." as it scribbles in a book. It's clad entirely in dark robes, as if it wore shadows. It realizes you're looking and freezes. It takes a few moments before it speaks, slowly and nervously. "N-now now.." It shakes. "G-good mimic...I-I w-won't tell anyone! Y-you're safe, I swear!" You can see a scared smile grow under it's hood.

-cont-
>>
>>40246514
Not entirely sure what to do, you open your mouth to try and speak, your row of far too many sharp too entirely on display- what comes out is more of a gurgle, or a growl. It suddenly blurts out at extreme speeds- "Ohgoddon'teatmeIswearI'llbringyoumorefoodohgodohgod" and falls to the ground, throwing it's arms in front of it as if it'll protect it. It scrambles back a few inches but oddly enough doesn't appear to be trying to run, really. Seeing your hesitation it stops. "P-please?" It mumbles.

>Eat it.

You take a few steps back, curling up into a ball as you do your best to look scared. It doesn't work entirely, considering he watched you kill a man and you're currently soaked in blood. Regardless, the robe person seems to calm a bit, slowly getting up. He glances over his shoulder back to the group of voices. "O-okay...That's uh...That's a nice mimic...Not hungry, right? You just...ate..." He looks a little sick for a moment, and starts breathing heavier.

You reach into your bag and he tilts his head, and he looks a little surprised when you bring out the shield and present it to him, holding it out for him. "Oh, wow." He states flatly. "That's, uh..." He glances around again and takes a few cautious steps forward. "You understand me?" You nod. He chuckles. "That's great! That's...Wow! Okay..." He takes the shield and turns it around in his hands. He grin fades a little as he recognizes it. "Oh...Oh, that was...Okay...T-thank you, this is very nice of you." He smiles.

You smile back and he shudders. He kneels by next to you. "That adventurer boy...Did you..." You nod. He grimaces. "Oh, no...That's bad, that's very, very-" He stops cold as you pout, shrinking back a little. "No no! No, that's very good! You're a very good...thing! Yes! Good hunter!" You can't help but smile again and laugh, and he smiles in turn, taking a deep breath of relief. "Right, right. It's just...Well, It's nothing. But we need to get you out of here! It's not safe here, for you. Not safe at all! They'll- well..." He starts mumbling to himself, trying to figure out how to sneak you out.

Mimics can look like near anything actually.
>A mimic can assume the general shape of any object that fills roughly 150 cubic feet (5 feet by 5 feet by 6 feet), such as a massive chest, a stout bed, or a wide door frame. The man's robes are very large. And the idea strikes you as something that'd be really fun to do. So, While he mumbles and paces about trying to think of something you reach out and grab his cloak. He yelps in surprise as you crawl under there. "H-hey! What are you doing?" He's wearing normal cloths under the robe. Maybe they are skin? Oh, no, wait, there's something under that too. And under that is tasty.

He wiggles about as you crawl up onto his back, clinging to his cloths. "H-hey! T-this isn't a time for games!" He whines. Despite his struggling you cling to his back, claws gripping on his cloths, and you wiggle your face up the back of his robes to just poke your eyes out from under it. You're pretty small in this form, and it seems like you actually are concealed rather easily. "Oh." The cultist chuckles nervously, trying to turn his head to look at you. "I think I get the idea! That...Might work? Maybe. You are way heavier than you look, by the way."

He fixes his hood and takes a deep breath. "Right. Well...Hang on, I guess." and slowly starts to move back towards the group of voices. He enters back into the light. There's a lot of people hanging about in the large room. One of them calls out to him. "Hey, Alchemist! Where have you been?"

The man chuckles nervously and wobbles a bit, hefting up the shield you gave him. "J-just looking around! I found a shield. It ah... Well, I-I think it... Might've belong to the boy." The adventurer takes the shield from it and turns it about. "Huh, Shit. You're right." He states flatly. "Well, If we don't find him, at least the woman will have something to remember him by. Uh...Good job, I guess."

The robed man laughs nervously again, inching over to the exit. "Y-yeah, right! Hah, W-well...There's probably nothing here for me, I t-think I'm going to head back to town." The adventure nods absent minded and waves him off, and the alchemist starts scurrying off towards the way out.

-Cont-
>>
>>40248011
Another yell stops him in his tracks, and he turns slowly back. "And hey, have you seen Zeke around anywhere?" He shrugs and shakes his head. "Oh, You know him! Always...Sneaking about...Ehehehe..." The adventure eyes him suspiciously and shrugs. "Eh, yeah, whatever." It's a short walk back, and a long trip up a staircase. Everything gets really bright, and your eyes hurt.

A cool breeze hits your skin and your eyes adjust, looking out over the landscape. Rolling hills of green, a scattering of trees. Large mountains in the distance. You seem to be on one of the larger hills, and you can see clearly out into the distance. You can see a town, surrounded by large plots of farmland. Many wooden houses and cobblestone roads. The 'Alchemist' breaths a sigh of relief. "Right, we should get back to town soon. Can you uh...Get off my back, now?" You grip him tighter.

That's it for tonight! I'm starting to run out of steam. Thank you all for playing! I signed up for some stuff, so here goes nothing!

And also: Something within my obscure system of I'm-making-shit-up-as-I-go-along has advanced! AKA you ate a person! Choose two:

>Enhanced senses. You can see and hear better in any form, and the iron lock on your chest now acts as an eye.
>Dampening: Any sound made within your chest is now muffled extremely, As well you can be generally quieter.
>Slidy. You can move about while in chest form.
>Gentleness. You're less obviously a hideous little monster at first glance. Might be able to pass as a little girl with some effort and a large sheet.

>Dampening: Any sound made within your chest is now muffled extremely, As well you can be generally quieter.
>Gentleness. You're less obviously a hideous little monster at first glance. Might be able to pass as a little girl with some effort and a large sheet.

Thanks for running, it's nice to see this back and not dead.

Your hunger drives you to consume the flesh of man. You can not escape it. It is the only way to survive and grow stronger.

Although generally that's the only limit. If you can figure out a way to eat people while still being nice, that'll work fine.

Best kind of monster is the one that doesn't look like a monster. Bonus to defense (people are less willing to hurt you) and charisma.

>talk
>gentleness

I have a big meal payday plan. Get enrolled at an orphanage. Relieve it of orphans in the night. Sneak away, profit.
>>
Hm. On second thought. Maybe I shouldn't include learning how to talk that way. Wouldn't it just be great if our nice new cult- I mean, Alchemist friend had to teach us?

Clumsy Cute Chest-chan is a go!
>>
>>40248449
Just make it a boost to learning to talk, we'll pick up on things faster than we would normally.

Also, A note on Gentleness: You're still pretty monstrous. You can't perfectly mimic a normal little girl immediately. It's just that you'll learn to...Subdue your inherit wrong-ness. Generally meaning you can get by with a heavy cloak and staying out of the way.
>>
>>40248449
>>40248501

So even if our alchemist friend doesn't have to teach us to talk, he can still teach us to act human.
>>
>>40248501
And I'm hoping Gentleness's next upgrade will be learning to make ourselves cute enough to not need something to cover our faces?
>>
>>40248476
Probably a good idea.
>>40248535
Also good idea.

It looks like people are pretty set on being adorable anyway, so this works out fine.

>>40248569
Possible. I haven't thought that far ahead.
>>
>>40248583
Adorable murder trap? I'm all for it.
>>
>>40248569
not sure if that would be all that fitting. we are still a monster after all
>>
>>40248583
Well, logical tiered progression and all that.

Here's hoping the nat 100 alchemist will be a useful teacher and comrade.
>>
>>40248633
Yeah, but we'd be a disgrace to our heritage if we can't even mimic a cute human girl to get close to people and devour the essence of their souls.
>>
>>40248643
I was planning on trying to find a way to include him anyway, but he's definitely probably maybe gotten a bit of a boost from the nat 100.

Some guy was pestering me about "Secondary characters" while I was planning this and well shit happens
>>
>>40248583
It's best you'd start thinking farther ahead.

Slippery sliders, no one will question it.

I'm imagining a chest sliding around making the noise of the old sound effect they used to use for like, slipping on a banana peel

>>
>>40250628
There was a story about this, I remember: a "the thing"-style doppelganger who absorbed a kind-hearted nun and took on her personality. had to step lightly when an adventuring party came hunting an evil abomination of her same type, eventually finishing with her fighting the evil one herself.
Was beautifully written, sorry I didn't save the screenshot.
