Your breath catches in your throat as your mind reels at what she's asking. But... but she can't. What about her mom? Wouldn't your mom get really mad if she came home? And... and what if they make you stay too? You don't want to! You love Djanna. You love her a lot, but... now that you've been outside, in the woods and the snow and the sunlight and the wind and chasing black squirrels and even if it's a little dangerous it's still fun, and a few bumps and scrapes aren't much, and-

Djanna coughs, whimpering as more flecks of blood fly from her lips, and that alone makes up your mind. Your tail falling still behind you, you swallow hard and nod slowly. "Okay, Djanna. Okay... I'll take you home..." She smiles up at you, grateful tears joining the pained ones, and she closes her eyes, breathing slowly as she tries to ease her pain. Emma steps away from you, moving toward the stairs down into the depths. You turn, ears perked curiously. "Where are you going?"

"I'm just going to grab a few things. Just wait here, okay? I don't think anything else is going to come out of the crypts. I hope so, anyway. Just keep her still for now and I'll be right back. Oh, and re-light that big brass bowl. It's getting cold in here and that's not going to be good for her." The kitty whispers a few words, and once again blends into the shadow and stonework, slipping along down the stairs. You strip off your greatcoat, throwing it over Djanna, followed by her blanket, and then yours. You unload your bag and roll it tightly, settling it under her head. You press on the door of the tower, forcing it open on grating hinges just enough to slip through, and scurry into the darkness, keeping low and never moving out of sight of the entryway. You gather some dead branches, wrenching a few loose that the tree is not quite ready to surrender, before you return to your temporary shelter. You shove the door closed again, and hope the stone will hold if anything else tries to force its way in.
>>
>>40250529
You break the branches into pieces where you can, using the hatchet when brute strength doesn't suffice, and soon enough the brazier blazes brightly. The metal radiates its heat clear to the edges of the rounded room. You wrinkle your nose at the remains of the zombie, dragging it to the stairway upward and leaving it there. Something above, a clattering of small stones falling, draws your attention and you move upward slowly, the light from the brazier below enough for your eyes to see by.

You enter a dust-covered room, this one with a few open windows set high in the wall. Tables and chairs sit alongside the walls, with rusted iron candle-holders sitting on each. A skeleton lies on a long central table, draped in a rotten cloth. Shelves line the rest of the walls, along with vials and bottles of dust, separated oils, and other unguents the likes of which you're not at all familiar with. The whole room smells vaguely of dust and old death, but not the same kind as rot and fresh corpses. Clean is the way you would put it, you think. A sudden screech from above sends you scurrying back against the wall, glowing claws raised, and the sound of wings above draw your eyes. A rather fat owl with long brows and eyes shining golden, reflecting the light of your claws, screeches what must be curses at you as it takes flight from the top of one of the shelves, out of the window. You slowly relax, before you notice what it had been seated on: A small chest, maybe the size of a child's lunchbox... whatever that is. You look about the room, tail wagging, before you drag over a chair and stand on your tiptoes to retrieve it. Once secured, you try to open the latch and find it locked.

Naw, you just strain against it and burst it open without even really trying. Inside, divided into individually padded sections, are three small vials of a ruby-colored fluid, with one section empty. They smell pungent, somewhat unpleasant, but the odor invigorates you. You hear Emma downstairs, calling out to you in a hissing whisper. "Hey... hey, um... war-beast? Where are you? You didn't leave me here, did you?"

You practically skip down the stairs, leaping over the headless corpse at the bottomw and landing heavily right behind the catgirl. She shrieks and leaps practically a foot in the air before wheeling on you with a glare and bared teeth. When she sees you, she puffs out a breath. "Don't do that! You almost killed me with fright." But she doesn't look... Well, never mind that.

Tail wagging, you hold the chest out toward her. "Look what I found upstairs! There's more stuff up there too, like books and tables and this really big owl! You should-" Djanna moans off in the semidark, and that brings you back to yourself. Okay, Nadia, calm down. You're not a pup any more. No need to be so-

"Amazing!" Emma reaches out, carefully taking the chest and examining the contents, lifting a vial and holding it up in front of the brazier. She gives it a quick twirl, and the liquid becomes opaque and dull. The tips of her tails twitch before she turns back to you, holding it out tightly in one hand. "Give this to your friend. Now."

You nod, snatching the vial from her hand and b- no, Nadia. You walk over to Djanna and slump down to your knees, scooting her head into your lap and easing it backward, her mouth opening. You bite the cork in the bottle and pull it out with a high-pitched pop, whining as you try to spit it out and find it impaled on a tooth. You try and dislodge it with your tongue to no avail before you give up and just set about pouring the liquid down Djanna's throat. She panics, which makes you panic and jam the vial into her mouth. "Emma said ya gotta take it all!"

You hear the slap of palm meeting face behind you.

Djanna finally swallows reflexively rather than choking twice in the same day, and her body shudders as it relaxes, her eyes rolling back in her head as she falls into a deep sleep. Her breath comes stronger, her heartbeat steadier, and there is a blush of new health to her cheeks. Your tail pounds the ground as you retrieve the empty vial from her mouth.

"What was that stuff?" You ask quietly, stroking your sister's hair.

"Bottled life." Emma nods, slipping back to the dungeon entrance and dragging over a worn leather cape laden with various shiny baubles.

"Will she be all right?" You stroke Djanna's hair softly, sniffing softly as the scent of the potion rises to your nostrils on Djanna's breath. Emma nods, settling the makeshift sled between the two of you and sitting down opposite you.

"It's potent stuff. Stronger brews can even raise the dead, I've heard. No idea if it's actually capable of doing that, but at the very least it can accelerate healing. It was a really lucky find."

"So, it's medicine? Why not just call it that? Bottled life sounds... Icky." You shudder, ears flattening back. Emma looks at you, then down to Djanna.

"Because people had to die to make it."

You look over at her, tilting your head in confusion. There's sadness in her eyes as she reaches out and begins fiddling with one of the brooches in the small treasure pile, slender fingers tracing the gold wire work over the garnet inlay. "What are you talking about?"

"Bottled life is a potent healing item, but to give life, life must be taken. It's something my dad taught me when I was young. That's why nobody made it where I came from. It was something that humans did, but then again..."

She falls silent, and you whine as you take Djanna's hand. "It won't hurt her?"

"No, not at all... And don't worry. I know it seems gruesome, but it's not like we made it. Honestly, if you hadn't found it, I'd have doubted her odds." She pucks up another piece of the treasure, a clear crystal carved into a multifaceted orb. Finally, your attention is drawn to the pile, and the ball in the small girl's hand. Absent-mindedly, she tosses it up and catches it, and your eyes folliw.

"What is all this, anyway?"

"The Czarina's treasures. I didn't think we should leave empty-handed. It's going to be a long journey. At least... You don't mind if I come with you, right? I... don't have anywhere else to go." She mutters, eyes cast sideways as her tail tio flicks.

Your tail thrashes about as you reach over and grab Emma, tugging her into your lap and nuzzling her vigorously. She yelps in surprise, giving a low growl as her tail and ears flick, but she doesn't fight it. In fact, you think you feel her leaning into your embrace as you sniff at her and nuzzle and she's just so cute and tiny and smells nice and-

"Of course you can come with us kitty! We'd love to have you along! Well, I would, but I know Djanna will like you too!"

"Kitsune!"

"Gheseundheit!"

"...what?"

"Never mind."

You spend the night together, the three of you curled up together under the pile of blankets, sharing heat against the autumn chill outside. When you wake, Djanna rises with you, packing your gear away with perhaps a bit too much enthusiasm. Your tail droops. You've been giving this a lot of thought, and if ever there was a time to try amd change her mind...

"Djanna..." You appriach your sister timidly, fingers twisting in the fur of your paws. She turns to you, smiling. She's still badly bruised, but she's breathing easily and there's a bounce in her step.

"Nadia, good morning! I'm almost ready to go. I'm sorry I worried you, but I think it's going to be good to be home. This was a mistake. We should never have left. Maybe we can find a way to keep the warrens safe, keep the monsters in the depths. We-"

"Djanna!" You bark, and she looks as though you'd slapped her. "I... Don't think we should go home."

She stares at you for what feels like forever before she turns away in silence, resuming her packing. Her back is rigid, her lios pressed together in a tight line.

"I just-"

"...promised..."

"Dj-"

"You said we could go home!" She rounds on you, fists at her sides, stomping a foot. "I almost DIED, Nadia! Doesn't that mean anything at all!? I thought we were friends! I-"

You cuff her on the cheek. Hard. She falls to the ground, stunned, raising a delicate claw to her face with a look of shock. You fall to your knees and hug her tightly, hand on the back of her head.

"I love you. Djanna, don't ever think otherwise. That's why I don't want you to give up. Remember in the warrens, what I said about getting strong? We can do that. We can find someplace safe and train. Find somebody who can help us. We have a whole year before we have to go back, and I promise, I won't ever leave you alone again. I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry... So please, don't give up, okay? I know you're strong. I know you've got a lot of growing to do, but I know you can be stronger than anything else out there. So please... Believe in me, and yourself?"

She sits in stunned silence before you feel her nod against your cheek, hugging you back tightly. She chokes back tears and whispers "You didn't have to hit me..."

"You were acting like a wild cub..."

She chuckles softly and nods, wioung her eyes. Emma clears her throat.

Djanna nods, reaching into her pack and pulling out the map. She points to the city. You and Emma lean in, looking over her shoulder. "If we aren't going home, then this is probably our best bet. Mom told me one of her friend's sons works on the docks, and if we got into trouble we should go see him. Maybe we could rest there... Think about what we're going to do next..."

"We should at least visit the shrine before we leave. Maybe in the daylight it won't be quite so dangerous." You don't mention that the redcap attacked you at high noon, and Djanna doesn't either. She points to a small X on the map, nearby the tower. "It's fairly close, if I'm not mistaken. We should be able to get there by nightfall, camp, and then leave the forest and make Dvotysk by nightfall the next day."

You nod as though you understood a word of it.

Djanna passes her jacket off to Emma and takes the leather cape, shivering in the chill as you all set out back into the woods. The sun blazes overhead, an unseasonable warmth keeping the chill mostly at bay. Emma grumbles softly at each step, stomping her feet to keep the circulation up, and soon enough yoi're carrying her piggyback, her as wrapped around your neck. The jaunt is uneventful, though here and there you hear the same hooting growl as the first day you set foot on the overworld, or see something in the distance dart between the trees.

"So... What is it you can do, Kitty?"

"Kitsu-" Emma grumbles and buries her face in the back of your neck. "Just call me 'Emma'. Which reminds me... You never gave me your names."

Your tail swishes and your steps take on a bit of a bounce. "I'm Nadia, and I'm a Kobold! This is my sister, Djanna, and she's a dragon!"

Emma doesn't question it. "It's nice to be properly introduced. It's nice to meet you. I never said it before, but thank you for helping me out." You smile and yip happily, and Djanna nods. "To answer your question, I'm an illusionist. It's something everyone in my tribe could do, but I had a talent. So my dad sent me to learn with..." She trails off, and you feel her tails flick against your legs. You decide to change the topic.

"Is that how you went all blurry?" You feel her nod against your neck. "It was neat. Think you could teach me?"

"I can try, but it would take a while. Djanna would probably have an easier time of it." She shifts in your back, poking her head up to look ahead at the dragon girl. "They're usually more in tune with arcane energy."

"Did you have a lot of dragons where you were from?" Djanna asks, looking back at the two of you. Emma's tail flicks again and she doesn't respond. Djanna opens her mouth to press it, but you shake your head, giving the girl a little bounce on your back.

"So... Know anything good to eat around here?" Your stomach growls lightly. "I don't know if I can take another night of dried meat..."

She squirms out of your grip and lands lightly on the loam, wincing at the cold on her bare feet. "Let me see what I can scare up. Wait here..." With a few muttered words, she vanishes. You see her blurry form slip into the woods silently.

Djanna looks apprehensive, her eyes darting about as though she expects to be attacked from every angle at once.

As long as our party is working together to fight a boss? Probably.

It might be better to give Bosses bonuses to rolls rather than outright extra dice because it could be that they never fail with 4 rolls.
>>
>>40254562
Sounds good. Certainly hope it will help poor Djanna and her shit rolls.

Maybe her mother has the d20 of misfortune in her hoard and it's affecting Djanna?
>>
>>40254460
You wait patiently, pacing around in front of Djanna. She looks like she's ready to bolt, but you lay a hand on her arm and give her your best smile. She seems to calm slightly, returning it.

That's when you hear a hooting roar, far too close for comfort, and see a quite visible Emma rush into the clearing, followed by the sound of snorting and snapping branches.

"We should go."

An extra die above 3 could have the boss almost always succeeding. A bonus might be better.
It depends on how hard the boss should be.

So a bonus of 10 per extra die they should have beyond three, or so?
>>

4d100k1 averages 84. And it's a damn reliable average.

Extra dice for enemies is a bad idea. Just apply bonuses. Random is BAD in long-running single-character games. Hell, if I were running I'd just set DCs instead of rolling for enemies.

You don't wait for an explanation. You grab Emma, who squeaks in surprise at being tucked suddenly under your arm, and then stoop ti throw Djanna up onto your shoulder before you dash away from the sound of the approaching beast. You don't even look back, though your curiosity almost gets the better of you. The ground shakes as you run, but it grows fainter along with the snuffling hoots until finally you only hear it in the distance, a roar of outrage driving the birds from their branches even this far away. Djanna us panting, and Emma is simply wilted in your grip.

"I think we're safe. Down, please." You set them both on the ground, and Emma holds out something to you that looks for all the world like a rough, brown bowling ball.

"I didn't expect that it would notice me. I'm... I didn't mean to cause any trouble." Her tail twitches, ears flicking in embarrassment. You take the ball curiously. It's heavy, and slightly warm. "It's not meat, but it's fresh."

"What is it?" You sniff it curiously. It smells horrible!

"Well, I found that big thing's nest, and there were all these eggs. I didn't think it would miss one."

>>

We've complained that we're sick of it and want something else.

So.. eat the egg. It's an egg. People all around the world eat eggs. Animals scavenge and steal and eat eggs.
>>
>>40255188
I like what you're doing so far, but watch out for those occasional hiccups, it is possible that those little things can disorient people.
>>
>>40255188
It's not from anything sapient, is it?
>>
>>40255188

You are doing well enough and I don't think I have any major criticisms that would be valid. The biggest thing I could possibly advise you to do is to present yourself as being more on the player's side as a QM. Cheeky can be amusing and it's often times fun as the narrator.

However, your players look to you as the balance and they want to see you leaning on their side. When rolls are bad, be sympathetic. When choices are ambiguous and seem to lead bad places, offer a confidence that it all leads to an excellent adventure.

Many QMs make the mistake of putting up a front of antagonism in play that spirals out of control and becomes a severe detriment to the game. Being the voice of friendly reason will keep people friendly and reasonable.
>>
>>40255188
i like the quest so far, except for dragonsis' shit rolls
the only thing i can think of is spelling mistakes, which aren't super prevalent, but are enough to comment on
>>
>>40255277
I think he's fine in that aspect. I honestly am having an hard time understanding these anons that freak out at the drop of the hat.

I mean.. what kind of a thin skinned idiot can't take a quirky comment?

>>40255325
He's on a cellphone atm I think that's why were seeing them.
>>
>>40255270
All right. I'll stop with the snark and be a bit more easygoing. I meant what I said earlier when I said "we all want to see what happens to Nadia". If I wanted to torment people, I'd run Tomb of Horrors. This, honestly, the most fun I've had in a long time, and I want to see it continue. That said, could you elaborate on these hiccups please?
>>
>>40255338
He probably means the comment like, "Oh well.. she was a good dragon."

Then we get idiots screaming WHAT? SHE'S DEAD?! EVERYTHING IS RUINED OH MY GOD MY STRESS LEVELS! I CANT TAKE THIS QUEST!
>>
>>40255338
Anons are panicky. Like, really panicky. Super low morale scores and it's easy for them to go full squad broken and turn on each other at the drop of a hat. To prevent shitstorms, you're going to have to be the voice of reason and unity; give hints that can be used to construct middle ground, that sort of thing.
>>
>>40255332

A large percentage of them, and I'd prefer Lotus not make his job harder and the quest that much worse by not adapting away habits that will rile that part of the audience during crucial moments.
>>
>>40255399
Except that can step on the toes of agency. I mean if the QM says "HERE ARE THE CHOICES. " I would go X.

Then why are we voting?

Worse. We may get anons who say stupid shit like, "WELL THE QM WANTS US TO VOTE X SO IF WE DON'T EVERYTHING IS RUINED!"

>>40255413
Or you could just be aware that he's quirky and not freak out over minor comments.

I mean.. That's what you did and it was all for nothing.

I'm worried that you're going to fuck up a good thing.

So far we've been having a good solid quest.

But if he stops being quirky and starts stapling QM approval on choices it's going to get dull quickly.
>>
>>40255455
I'm not talking about choices. I'm talking about info. Too much info is bad, yeah. But too little info leads to Anons fighting about what little they have means and fighting each other when they inevitably disagree, while they should be trying to solve the problem. Solid, accurate, unbiased info makes the difference between a full rout/shitstorm and a good response.
>>
>>40255495
I think we've had plenty of info so far is what I'm saying.

He also provided compromise options when things got iffy. Like to to the city.

The issue is that people still stonewalled and screamed about how we were going to ruin everything if we didn't return to the warren.

Yet. Just after that we had a talk with her and even cuff'd her.

Somehow she doesn't hate us forever and we didn't crawl back home.

I would say I'm on the paranoid side of RPing, but people who just said that they have to go back is dumb. what was the point of this if we were to return immediently with an injured ally?
Plus, I doubt that the QM would have just outright killed our dragon even if we didn't get the loot.

Your tail swishes and you reach out with a hand, holding the egg to your chest with the other. You pat Emma on the head between her ears, and oh god her hair feels terrible. Still, she seems to melt under the attention, tails waving and ears twitching though she does her best to look unmoved. "You did good! This looks like it's going to be really good... But be more careful next time! You could have been hurt!" You cast a guilty look to Djanna, who looks away shamefaced. Emma whines and presses her head up into your paw before reaching out and grabbing the egg.

"I didn't mean to get its attention, you know. I thought it wouldn't notice me grab the egg! I don't even know how it noticed me."

"It's because you smell terrible." Emma glares daggers at you, ears prickrd upright in agitation.

"...thanks. Thanks for that." She grumbles and looks between the two of you for a moment before turning her attention back to the egg. "So how are we going to cook this?"

>>
>>40255891
Not that you can directly confirm, but Emma was being chased by something that sounded bestial. Make of that what you will.
>>
>>40255803
Tired from your flight, you light a small fire and burn it down to glowing coals undera's direction, burying it in the hot ashes. Something doesn't sit well with you, though. You're hungry, but...

"Kitty?"

Emma's ear flicks and she sighs as she pokes at the coals lightly with a long stick, bending to blow carefully on them till they glow. "Yes?"

"The egg. You didn't... I mean, Djanna..."

"What are you trying to ask, Nadia. Slow down, think, then speak." Emma keeps tending to lunch, sitting close to the embers. She shivers as a light breeze flows through the trees, and you whine softly as you consider where to find her some clothes.

"The egg didn't come from anyone like us, did it? I'm not sure I'm okay eating a baby anyway, but if it was smart, I really wouldn't feel good..." Your tail thumps slowly, a slight whine in your voice.

The kitsune looks up at you, eyes narrowed as she regards you before she shakea her head and turns back to her work. "Don't worry, it's a monster egg. I mean, a real monster. The kind that would eat you without those kinds of thoughts."

Djanna looks up from the map, suppressing a shiver. "There are a lot of those kinds of monsters out here? My- our parents told us it was dangerous, but we didn't think..."

A sudden look of realization dawns on Emma's face. "Hey... Just how old are you two?"
