You are Kusajishi Riku, Captain of the Ninth Division of the Seireitei's Court Guard.

It's been eleven months since your arrival at Verdun.

Nearly a year of struggling to sleep through the reverberating roar of massed artillery fire, and of cleaning up after costly pushes across the same ground day after day. It has been a constant grind on your collective sanity and willpower, but through sheer stubbornness and a strict rotation scheme among your squads the Ninth Division, Yoruichi's Onmitsukidō, and the local Valhallan balancers seem to have managed.

The fighting at Verdun cost some 300,000 lives: one thousand killed for each of the 303 consecutive days. Including wounded, the casualties between both sides may number more than a million. But that was not your battle. Alongside that bloodshed was another battle the humans couldn't see, against a monstrous enemy who kept no schedule and felt no pity. The powerful Hollows who have come through from Hueco Mundo to feed on the dead and dying were your only enemies, and fighting them has taken a toll on your Division.

You've lost some fifty Shinigami since coming here, which totals about 8% of your Division's numbers. Thanks to your inability to draw in new conscripts, however, many more have been wounded and later returned to battle: some 30% of your division have been casualties at some point.

You, Yoruichi, Rangiku, and Suì Fēng have definitely taken the worst of it though, having stubbornly remained in the living world alongside your subordinates for the full duration. It's been a long and difficult deployment, however your constant presence has served to enhance your image with your own Division. Overall you'd say they've been most taken with...

The Ninth expected their new Captain to be strong from the beginning. It's a fundamental part of the selection criteria, after all, and your performance on the battlefield has left none in doubt of the overwhelming power you've brought down on several occasions. They've seen you perform feats that nobody else in the Division could possibly hope to replicate, with your sword, your fists, and your kidō alike.

“Hakushi”, they've taken to calling you. White Death.

But many of them have also had the chance to see a different side of you as well. Your Commando unit were always in a position to see it, being the closest officers to yourself, and now during the most trying times they've faced under your command the rank and file have caught glimpses as well. More that collecting the weekly reports from your squad leaders, you regularly take time out of your day to check on the well-being of your squads themselves. You've eaten the same lousy food as them, cracked a few jokes around their fires, and been present when they paid their final respects to their own fallen comrades.

Your polite smile, your unflappable and confident leadership... and the ability to snap an Adjuchas in half over your knee at one-fifth of your power. It's those sharp contrasts that make you such an intriguing figure to them, you think. And you get the feeling that as time has passed, you've come to gradually gain their admiration as something more than Kensei's replacement.

At the request of the Valhallans, you and Yoruichi have moved your respective commands towards Ypres, a city in Belgium near which a large salient has formed in the battle lines as it snakes and weaves through the low, hilly countryside. Much more activity has been focused here lately, with regular Hollow sightings within the city itself. But tonight, things seem quieter than usual. Even the din of battle has grown dim for some reason. You don't know why... only the human generals would know that.

You can't sleep. The high spire of a damaged cathedral has become the site of your headquarters in Ypres, where the few officers in-country at the moment are resting. Yoruichi is asleep, as are Mirai, Rangiku, and Kai. Suì Fēng is out on patrol, and isn't expected back for another two days.

It's a relatively calm night tonight. There's a light breeze that isn't wafting poison gas everywhere... at least not yet. There's also a beautiful full moon out, which means there's only a slim chance of one or the other sides planning a large-scale raid on the other side's trenches. So if you're ever going to go out for a stroll, now would be the best time.

The roads around Ypres are a mess after a recent rain shower that left the area drenched, and standing water is everywhere. You don't have to deal with it though: you can suspend yourself just barely above the sodden ground if you like, and tonight is one time where you're definitely thankful for that ability. A military ambulance drives past you with its headlights off, forcing you to quickly sidestep off the road and nearly causing you to overlook an unwelcome phenomenon high above you in the night sky.

Darkened sky and gray clouds slide apart as something forces its way into the living world through the Garganta...

You elect to take a wait-and-see approach rather than alerting any nearby friendly units or attacking immediately, and it doesn't take long at all for you to be deeply relieved that you did.

The Garganta opens fully, and rather than a Hollow crying out and launching itself at the nearest food source you see two halves of what appears to have been an Adjuchas fall to the mud with a blood-soaked splat. As the chunks dissipate on the breeze, a human-sized figure with a white vest, a red sash and plume, and familiar reiatsu steps through.

“What the hell are you doing here, Apacci!?” you demand in a low hiss as she drifts almost lazily to the ground in front of you. “I almost called for backup! How d'ya think I'd explain this to the locals, hm?”

The raven-haired Arrancar frowns at you. “Lady Halibel wanted me to tell you something, but with THAT attitude...”

You sigh. “Fine, fine. I'm sorry, it's just I've been on a hair trigger lately.”

Apacci nods, seeming to accept your apology as she looks around at the churned-up land and splintered trees. “Things seem to be getting stupid down here.”

“You have no idea.”

“We've been looking into things. Turns out there's been two groups giving you the most trouble,” Apacci tells you, scratching at one ear. “One's led by a Vasto Lorde by the name Barrigan... real special piece of shit. Calls himself the King of Hueco Mundo. The other's led by a Vasto Lorde she doesn't know as well.”

“That's barely enough of a tree to hide behind,” you announce in the direction of a tree that's been splintered about seven feet off the ground. “I know you're there, Mirai.”

After a few tense moments, the young Shinigami steps out from behind the trunk, her sword already drawn. She looks at you, clearly confused, before looking back to Apacci. “Why does that person feel like a Hollow, Captain? Please tell me what's going on here.”

Apacci snorts once. “It's cause I was a Hollow. Then the good Captain here ripped my face off and...”

The Arrancar finally notices your glare, and her eyes widen ever so slightly. “Oh. Shit, sorry.”

You heave a loud sigh, realizing that things have been said that can no longer be un-said. “Yeah, not gonna lie, you made a mess of that one Apacci.”

“She's an Arrancar,” you explain to Mirai. “A Hollow that's gained power and regained some of her humanity by tearing off her own mask and sealing it into a sword.”

“So that was a Hollow mask after all,” Mirai muses calmly, though her sword remains at the ready. “That doesn't explain the nature of her business with you, Captain. You have a good reason for this, right?”

She sounds hopeful, in her own understated sort of way. “I've been working with Apacci here and a few others like her for years,” you admit. “Remember that mission where I rescued that Shinigami from Hueco Mundo? Lieutenant Kano?”

Mirai nods quietly.

“They helped me with that, among other things. And even if I can't tell people about 'em, they're okay.”

It takes a few more moments, but eventually Mirai lowers her blade.

“Thank goodness,” she sighs. “I didn't want to believe you had become a traitor.”

“Don't tell anyone,” you insist to your Sixth Seat. “It's better for everyone involved the fewer Shinigami know about it.”

Apacci looks like she's getting bored. “So that outta the way?”

You nod. “Anything else I should know about them?”

“Barrigan's got a larger standing army,” the Arrancar tells you, almost as if the whole drama between you and your subordinate had never happened. “And he's the kind of asshole who won't lift a finger himself if he can get away with it. The other one's name is Saladahn, and he's got a big tail with a barb at the end. Loves using it, too. Of the two, he's by far the more likely to put in a personal appearance.”

“Thanks,” you mutter. “I appreciate the heads-up. Say hi to the others for me, tell 'em I'm glad they're not here.”

“I'll do that,” Apacci grins. “Try and get some sleep, Captain. You look like you need it.”

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is this an option of trying to ask Apacci and our friends back at Ghost Mexico to keep any more mass Hollow excursions occupied?

They don't even need to kill, just cause a ruckus and lead the masses on a wild goose chase for a bit before disengaging and porting back to the Valley.

“Do me a favor?” you ask, causing Apacci to turn and look at you over her shoulder. “Could you tell Starrk I met his older brother in America a while back? I haven't had a chance to do anything but this in months or I'd have told him myself.”

“That so? What's his name?” Apacci asks, suddenly intrigued by the notion of Starrk having a family.

You grin. “Also Coyote. As in the trickster god Coyote.”

The Arrancar seems stunned for a moment before shaking her head, clearing her thoughts as she opens a Garganta. “That's too insane not to be true. I'll let him know for you.”

“Thanks.”

As you return to the tower where you've made your headquarters, Mirai pipes up at your side. “You mean one of the Arrancars you work with is the brother of an American god? The same one who got you...”

“High off my ass?” you complete the thought, grimacing at the memory. “The very same. Explains how he can be so bullshit strong, if the Coyote he sent here to help the Valhallans is anything to go by.”

Finally you bid your Sixth Seat goodnight, ensuring that this time she tucks herself into her makeshift bedroll rather than stalking you further, before heading to the belfry to rouse Yoruichi.

“Huhwahddyawan,” she grumbles ineloquently, trying to roll away from you. You've come to learn over the months that Yoruichi doesn't take kindly to interruptions when she's in bed.

You shake her shoulder a bit more insistently before recounting what Apacci told you to her. She listens with bleary eyes, but a surprising degree of retention given her half-conscious state. “Sounds like we're in for some fun,” she groans. “And by fun I mean the sarcastic kind, not the kind I'd rather be having.”

The next morning is the 31st of May, 1916. This time you're both treated to the same sort of wakeup you gave Yoruichi in the small hours of the morning. It's not the distant sounds of artillery fire and signal horns, but an orderly's raspy voice that rouses you from the most comfortable place around Ypres nowadays: your dreams.

“General Taylor,” the clean-shaven young man announces slowly once you shake yourself awake, “wants you...”

He points at you and Yoruichi for emphasis, “to meet with HIM,” he enunciates, jabbing a finger towards where he thinks the General's headquarters is, “about a mission.”

Your eyes narrow. “You a replacement, or have you just got a head wound?”

“I'm sorry?”

“She's asking about your speech impediment, boy,” Yoruichi growls, also in English. “Either you can't help it or you're a dumbass rookie who doesn't know any better than to treat us like idiots.”

“Get out of my office,” you order. “And by the way, that's not even the direction General Taylor's HQ is. It's THAT way. Get your ass back there double-time, and fix me the biggest pot of coffee in the world.”

The orderly, of course, scrambles to do as you told him as Yoruichi chuckles to herself.

“Never gets old, does it?”
(2/3)
>>
(as an aside how have the guns been working out?)
>>
>>40280539
When you arrive the coffee is ready to be drunk, and you and Yoruichi split the pot between yourselves as General Taylor sorts through a pile of intercepts and what appear to be naval charts on the large desk at the center of the basement room that's serving as his headquarters.

"So what's this about, General?" you ask calmly.

The General, an older, bespectacled man with a wispy beard and barely an inch worth of height over Yoruichi glares down at his papers, not even tearing his eyes from them. "Jellicoe and Beatty are taking the Grand Fleet into German waters as of yesterday," he replies. "Our Teutonic coworkers are telling us Scheer and Hipper are moving to intercept. The war at sea will likely be won or lost in the next forty-eight hours."

Yoruichi shrugs. "What's that got to do with us?"

General Taylor finally looks up, removing his glasses. "Well, we can't bloody well swim after them, can we?"

"And we've got elites who can walk on air," you conclude. "You want us to keep Hollows from going after them."

"Precisely, ma'am."

Decently, considering the limitations of an over-under double weapon. The power of each round has been hard-capped by design so that they aren't a real threat to Lieutenants, but they hit well within their weight class and the fireteam/squad organization is working well.

“I'll take the other white coats,” you decide. “Yoruichi, can you handle everything for a bit?”

Your fellow Captain nods quietly. “Yeah, sure. Bring me back a souvenir.”

“I'll grab you some seaweed,” you joke.

Yoruichi gives you a cheeky grin. “We can have wakamezake.”

You're just gonna ignore that. Taylor doesn't know any better anyway. “I'll get the team together and have the Senkaimon realigned.”

It takes only a few minutes to gather Kai and Mirai, catching them up on the mission and handing them waterproof coats to wear over their standard uniforms. You then have Kai open the Senkaimon, and are treated to your first sight of the Seireitei in months. You can only spend a few hours here while the Senkaimon is realigned for Denmark. This gives you the time you need to grab Ichinose and Iba as well, interrupting their midmorning sparring session.

Finally, after entirely too long, Mayuri assures you that the portal should drop you right on top of one or the other fleets. The real question now is, which one to follow?

It's food play. Taken from Wikipedia:
>The Japanese version, wakamezake , also called wakame sake and seaweed sake, similarly involves drinking alcohol from a woman's body. The woman closes her legs tight enough that the triangle between the thighs and mons pubis form a cup, and then pours sake down her chest into this triangle. Her partner then drinks the sake from there. The name comes from the idea that the woman's pubic hair in the sake resembles soft seaweed (wakame) floating in the sea.

May 31, 16:00.

The sound of a distant explosion tells you that the battle at Jutland has been joined.

It was probably tooth-rattlingly powerful at the source, wherever that was. Not even naval rifles, either... that was probably the sound of a magazine explosion. The German fleet under Admiral Scheer shifts into high gear, klaxons blaring as countless sailors race to their combat stations aboard the various cruisers and dreadnoughts.

The seas are fairly high, and whipped by wind and the odd squall, and half an hour later you hear a second explosion: this one was even closer than the first. Now you can hear the big guns of the battlecruiser scouting fleets sounding out as the titanic steel machines slug it out at a range of several kilometers. Bits of detritus bob in the frothy seas as the German ships pass the scene of the first exchange of gunnery, and giant columns of smoke mark the location of two sunken battlecruisers.

Something appears to be wrong with the British ships today.

Jutland was an inconclusive battle, but in the end the German fleet never broke out

About 10k lives lost.

Granted here, if a group of hollows cause a few issues in some of the English ships it would be a real mess.
>>
>>40282274
It's already been stated, they're weaker individually than Shinigami but their knowledge of massed fire tactics means that they are effective in large-scale confrontations.

They apparently have difficulty fighting against strong independent targets, which is what Shinigami excel at.

I mean, it kind of makes sense. By and large, Europe was quite a violent place throughout history.
>>
>>40281860
There are only a few more explosions over the next few hours, and no sign of Hollows. You figure if there are any aquatic ghost monsters around here, they're likely waiting for the same climactic battle that you, the British, and the Germans are all waiting for as well. It's not until a little past 18:00 that evening that things start to get intense again.

A small detachment of British ships are badly bloodied when they stray into the German line of fire chasing after a damaged and burning hulk of a warship, each salvo sending rippling shockwaves through the ocean around the combatants. Larger battlecruisers are drawn into the fray and exchange rifle fire to devastating effect: twenty minutes into the battle and a third British battlecrusier's spine is shattered by a magazine explosion that causes Mirai to wince instinctively. A reassuring hand on her shoulder steadies her as you wait for the right moment to move out.

At 18:30, the moment arrives: the British fleet under Admiral Jellicoe “crosses the T” against Scheer's fleet. It's the moment every naval planner has been looking for since the first modern battleship took to the seas, the moment everyone in the human world seems to think will determine the future course of the war. And out of the twenty-four battleships under Jellicoe's command only ten manage to open fire. In less than five minutes the moment passes as Scheer wisely turns his fleet hard and reverses course under heavy smoke and fog.

“Here they come!” Rangiku shouts, taking to the sky. You feel it too: there are Hollows underneath the surface of the water, having finally come to feed on the dead and dying sailors of the two massive fleets. Many of them feel like Menos.

>Split up and focus your defense on the most battered vessels.

“ICHINOSE!” you roar over the sound of naval gunfire. “LIGHT 'EM UP!”

“How deep!?” Ichinose shouts back.

You ponder the question briefly. “500 METERS, WATCH FOR THEIR SHADOWS!”

Ichinose quickly releases his Nijigasumi, and fires a series of painfully bright “blades” of hardened light into the ocean in a wide pattern. At the same time you contact Tenkotsuki, asking her to modify Hyōga Seiran for you to make it more conducive to fighting an enemy below the ocean's surface as soon as you see them.

“I will do what I can,” she tells you in a few seconds.

You nod, satisfied. “Everyone, get ready. Watch around the Defence, Invincible, Lützow, and Derfflinger.”

“Time to go fishin'!” Kai jokes loudly as he releases Kamitenbe, aiming his rifle at the waters below.

You scan the water for several long seconds until you spot something moving in the deep water, passing one of Ichinose's lights and casting a long shadow beneath the stricken hull of the battlecruiser Lützow. After a moment where you come up with your best guess of where the Hollow casting the shadow actually is, you release a powerful Hyōga Seiran into the water. Instead of solid ice, however, it looks much more like a “pulse” that moves through the depths. The trailing wake where the water frozen by the spell thaws out tracks straight and true, striking something far beneath the surface.

Tenkotsuki seems elated. “Wow, so that actually worked!”

“There was a question!?” you demand angrily. “The hell!?”

“Calm down and stay focused,” your Zanpakuto chides you. “They are coming.”

True enough an Adjuchas emerges from the water and smashes into Kamitinbe's shield. It puts most of its massive weight behind the long, eel-like body, though its reptilian head can't seem to get a good crip over Kai's actual body behind the shield.

“Shit!” he shouts as the Hollow plunges into the water.

The dust of Haineko's blade is already deep underwater, delivering powerful electric shocks and slashes to shadowy creatures as they make attack runs on damaged warships on the surface, only to be driven off into the relative safety of the depths. Rangiku is in no position to help Kai.

Oh no, that piece of shit isn't getting out of this that easily... and you've got to kill that Hollow, too.

“Hainawa!” you shout, extending a full-powered rope of jagged energy into the darkness below you and wrapping it around the great beast's tail. Flaring up your “armored” Shunkō, you back up into the sky as hard and fast as you can, dragging the Adjuchas along with you. It breaks the surface of the water amid a roar of cannons, only to have Mirai attack it with a flash step and a powerful swing of her Sesshōseki that does obvious damage to its body.

It also releases its hold over Kai, who proceeds to unload into its head as Mirai continues to beat on its ribs and spine like a giant slimy piñata on a cord of kidō. You'd be tempted to feel bad for it if it hadn't just tried to eat one of your men.

“I'm the only one who gets to chew on you!” you shout at Kai, who offers you a thumbs-up as the sea serpent Menos roars and dies. “Don't forget it!”

“How could I!?” he jokes. “Thanks for the assist, Miss Mirai!”

The girl merely nods and rests her weapon on one shoulder.

Something is wrong here... you sense something powerful beneath the waves. Far more powerful than an average Adjuchas, but still not quite at the level of a Vasto Lorde.

Then you see it: a vast shape, vaguely humanoid with defined shoulders and a head with two bright, malicious eyes. It looks for all the world like an umibozu, but you've never heard of any shinigami encountering such a thing. It's also got the definite feel of a Hollow to it.

“Down there!” you shout. “Focus fire on that shadow!”

“CLEAR OUT!” you shout. “DON'T BE ANYWHERE NEAR THAT THING!”

Your Commandos all back out as fast as they can, suspecting some powerful spell: and they won't be disappointed.

Ten pink lances of energy gather around you as you stretch Tenkotsuki out towards the umibozu as it rises towards the surface. She recites the incantation for you as you feel the lances grow to a tremendous power despite your present strength having been limited to a fifth of your maximum. “Hadō 91, Senjū Kōten Taihō!”

The lances stab into the dark depths, but you don't draw them together due to the difficulty in aiming the blast. Four of them slam into the target, but three of those pass straight through it and explode with the rest below the creature. For an instant you can see the truly enormous size of the beast, and the tenth lance unleashes a massive explosion that unleashes a boiling column of superheated water towards the surface.

After a devastating blow, the umibozu sinks quickly back into the depths and through a Garganta, returning to Hueco Mundo to lick its wounds and heal. Its round, blank eyes eventually fade to black along with the rest of it.

You suppose you'll have to settle for that.

By 19:15 the British fleet has crossed the T on the German High Seas Fleet again after having apparently lost contact for several minutes. Several German dreadnoughts are raked by accurate gunfire in a sudden reversal of the fight between the scouting battlecruisers, and the Germans are forced to flee under heavy smoke again.

The remaining battlecruisers in the German fleet make a suicidal “death ride” at the pursuing British, drawing as much fire as they can send downrange and then some as they plunge towards their enemy. The range between these two ships and the enemy fleet narrows to what must be only five kilometers, or just a few dozen ship-lengths. No less than fifteen British battleships greet them, unleashing a hellish hail of hardened steel and cordite fierce enough to tear the casemate turrets from one of the battlecruisers clean from their mountings. You never thought steel could scream, but that's the closest word you can use to describe the sound of the tortured metal giving way to the overwhelming forces at work on it.

At one point more than one explosion rocks the German ships every minute, and yet they're still hanging on somehow.

By the last few precious minutes of daylight Scheer's main fleet has managed to escape, and even the battlecruisers have managed to limp away despite heavy losses that leave some of them riding low in the water.

Rangiku comes over to join you, looking over the choppy, darkened seas. “We should do something,” she mutters, clearly concerned about the number of lost souls bobbing in the ocean here.

You nod thoughtfully. “Fan out, get all the ones you can and meet me back here in half an hour. Then we're leaving.”

Out of all those who perished here, only a few souls haven't either moved on or given up, sinking into the inky blackness below them. You offer them what little comfort you can before sending them on in typical shinigami fashion, relieving them of the shivering, cold misery they've had to suffer through.

When you and your Commandos finally return to Ypres, Yoruichi hands you something along with the reports from your Division for the day: a strand of thirty-six wooden beads, carved from a chunk of high-quality aromatic agarwood. Connecting them is a red cord with a little tassel, which you realize means that these are prayer beads designed after the Rinzai tradition.

“You know what day it is?” she asks you.

You shrug. “After that fight, not really. But it's 1916, so I can guess.”

“That's right,” she nods. “One century ago today I met you in an allyway in the Rukongai. I've been carving those beads for a week when you weren't looking.”

They smell wonderful, a deep, sweet fragrance with hints of plum and spice that you could faintly smell even before she handed them to you.

“... thanks,” you mutter, not really knowing what else to say as you twist them once and wrap them around your left wrist. “They smell amazing.”

“Hey, it was your wood,” she grins. “Only makes sense that you should get something back for it.”

July, 1916. The Battle of the Somme begins in France to the south of your Division. It's only then that Fifth Division is called in to deal with the battle, getting their first true baptism of fire under Captain Aizen. Their casualties are worse than yours, you hear, with Aizen and Gin themselves having to deal with most of the toughest Hollows themselves to prevent a total rout of their forces. By November they've suffered 40% killed or wounded, with nearly half of those dead.

Their Division is withdrawn for reinforcement and retraining in December.

Ninth Division and the Onmitsukidō remain deployed around Ypres until well into 1917, when General Taylor contacts you yet again.

“What is it this time,” you moan. “Last time I got all wet. It was cold, and annoying, and I had to punch an Adjuchas in the face.”

Rangiku chuckles quietly to herself. “Maybe this time we'll have some proper support?”

“One can only hope.”

“The planned July offensive is about to begin at Messines,” Taylor tells you. “We want someone to scout the area to determine the British battle plan, and it needs to be someone who can survive an attack without drawing too much attention.”

“So you want me,” you conclude. “Strong enough to fight on my own, but good enough at hiding.”

“That IS the idea, ma'am,” the General muses.

“Rangiku,” you order, “keep a squad in reserve on that stretch of the front line while I work alone."

Your daughter nods sternly. “Right, Captain. I'll bring them in the second there's trouble.”

It takes you a few minutes to get to Hill 60, which seems to be the focus of British efforts on this stretch of the front. Looking around reveals the blasted landscape and burned trees common to the rest of the Belgian countryside right now, with little to distinguish it from anywhere else around aside from the big hill and its obvious defenses.

You have some time as darkness brings a lull in the fighting, which lets you search around the area.

It takes you several hours to find what you're looking for: the entrance of a tunnel leading towards Hill 60 itself. You creep into the tunnel to try and figure out what's going on down here, and what all the commotion is about. Hundreds of meters, reinforced periodically with wooden framing and lit with incandescent bulbs until they near the far end of the tunnel. And it's at that end that you see it.

It's a bomb. You have no idea how much explosive material is stored down here, but you've never seen that much in one place during your whole deployment.

You dash out of the tunnel, and search out the stretch of British trenches around the Messines Ridge. You manage to locate several tunnels, figuring out the general strategy that the Brits are going to be pursuing. Having achieved that objective, you begin to make your way back across no-man's land to where Rangiku's squad is waiting to relay your findings to headquarters. But the real question, you wonder in the small hours of the morning, is when they're going to...

You don't remember the explosions themselves, but you're told they were clearly audible in London. Ten thousand German soldiers simply go missing all at once at 03:10 that morning, with most if not all never realizing that they were in imminent danger.

The flash and the shockwave can't have killed you. You're a spirit, but your senses work basically in the same way a normal human's do. So while you're more resilient, you're also still vulnerable to similar changes in the environment... in this case a huge fucking explosion going off a few hundred meters away.

When you finally come to you're on your back, staring at the sky with blurred vision as a strangely quiet lightshow plays out around you. The artillery isn't audible to you, and instead your ears are filled with ringing after your eardrums were ruptured by the extreme pressure. If you were a human there'd be nothing left of you.

Terrifyingly enough, that's when he decides to make his move.

The night air silently tears asunder, revealing a roughly humanoid fighter with a tail like that of a scorpion. His head and body are vaguely insectile as well, and his arms end in vicious pincers.

The Vasto Lorde and his Hollow entourage survey the devastation, and his cold eyes lock on you.

From the sounds of it, the gun fire damage is capped for the soul society to only be a threat to non LT level people.

Perfectly useful in squads for most things.

as stated by queen here: >>40280784

More then likely any ideas Riku brings over will be a rough time trying to get the central 46 to move. Ultra conservative, and no matter how Riku will state what happened there can happen in Japan they likely won't move. At best, expect to see hopefully small allowances. I think a weapon like a m1903 springfield would be the absolute best that can be expected before WW2.

I think a 1870's era lever action rifle is likely what will be allowed to the squad.

Allowing Tenkotsuki to cast the spell for you, you mentally shout at Rangiku to get the limiters released on your powers immediately. If it weren't for the severe concussion and your ruined senses of balance and depth perception this fight might actually be close, and if you weren't under a limiter you'd be able to eat this Vasto Lorde for breakfast. But as things stand, you're in incredible danger here.

You have no idea if Rangiku heard you or not, but you fire off a few attacks to thin out the other Hollows while reiatsu bullets and dust from Haineko's blade blast and slice away at the crowd. Many of the Hollws feed on their fallen brethren, especially when two of the Gillian who came through behind the Vasto Lorde go down. At this rate it's a feeding frenzy of sorts: anything sufficiently “tasty” is a prospective meal.

It's then that the Vasto Lorde makes his move, apparently unwilling to allow you time to prepare further.

You narrowly avoid being impaled by his tail as it lashes out at you, and you manage to parry his claw as he tries to sever your neck with it. The force of the blow throws you backwards as the powerful Hollow pursues you undeterred. The blurry vision and flashes of artillery fire make it hard to keep track of his movements and you very nearly take another tail-swipe across the chest.

He says something to you, a sneer visible in his few exposed facial features, though you can't hear his words over the tinnitus.

He shakes his head, after apparently expecting a reply.

“WHAT!?” you shout, still not hearing yourself.

The Vasto Lorde apparently repeats his last few words... beautiful.

You pause for a moment, merely nodding silently. “WHAT DID YOU SAY!?”

Enraged, the Hollow shouts at you. Yeah, keep trying asshole. Does he think if he shouts loud enough, maybe your ears will spontaneously un-fuck themselves?

“I CAN'T BANTER OVER THE SOUND OF MY EXPLODED EARDRUMS!”

He glares at you.

“IT HAPPENS WHEN YOU GET BLOWN THE FUCK UP!”

You exchange a glance as you grin.

“SŌKŌ SHUNKŌ!”

For a moment the Vasto Lorde frowns in confusion, and you can see his mouth start to move before your fist collides with it. The massive power behind the simple punch catches the Vasto Lorde completely by surprise and knocks out a few of his teeth. Your hand is left bleeding a little, but the Blut component of this technique prevents worse damage.

Rather than keeling over and dying, as he may well have had you been at full power, he recovers and kicks off the ruined ground to take to the sky. There, he begins to charge a powerful cero.

If you don't stop this you're probably dead, along with everyone behind you including Rangiku and her squad.

As the cero is released towards you, ripping the very air as it approaches, you make a snap decision. You reverse the flow of reiatsu through your circular system, pumping it outwards through your arteries. It's this sudden reversal and outward focus that allows you to use “Kengen”, the ultimate technique used in conjunction with the Sōkō Shunkō.

The white energy blasts out away from you with a power that even catches you by surprise. It's not enough to kill or even seriously wound your Hollow foe, but it's enough to stop and begin to break down the cero he fired at you. Its release leaves a nineteenth crater in the landscape around Messines ridge, one where there should have been no bomb planted. You also realize something as you spare a glance at your sword-arm: the after-effect of Kengen is that after its release your reiatsu is still flowing out through your clearly-visible, glowing arteries. It effectively leaves you in the offensive form of Blut, “Blut Arterie”. During the war with the Quincies it was said that this was the only way to harm a Captain-class opponent while fighting against their Bankai.

Time to test its strength.

Your body moves far quicker than usual, your hirenkyaku carrying you past the Vasto Lorde in an instant. Tenkotsuki slices his left arm off cleanly, leaving a deep gash that goes clean through a few of his ribs. The look of shock on his face is wonderful as he tries to comprehend what just happened.

He quickly realizes that you've been left more vulnerable now that you released Kengen, and comes at you roaring in a rage that's eerily silent.

sweet, we can now use both blut techniques, a little clumsy perhaps but its still good.
>>
>>40286982
>we got bastardized Arterie
We are going to give every Quincy we meet an aneurism.

He never gets the chance.

Something stops him mid-charge, like a hazy net of glowing dust: electrically-charged fragments of Rangiku's zanpakuto. They're not enough to kill him, but they create just enough of an opening for a brown-skinned fighter to leap to your aid.

From the Hollow's weakened left side Yoruichi attacks with a glowing ball about the size of her fist. Then, with a second step that dodges the predictable counterattack and keeps her in the Vasto Lorde's blind spot, she slams a second ball where the first landed.

There's a blast of yellow light as the Hollow's body boils and distorts, before charring like a piece of meat dropped into a roaring fire. Then, the remains crumble to dust.

You can't hear what Yoruichi tries to say to you, but you don't need to.

Sheathing Tenkotsuki, you allow your partner to lead you back towards Rangiku's squad.

and then learn their techniques before punching them in the face
>>
>>40287129
we are the ultimate "fuckyourshit" to quincy's everywhere

Huh. That sounds an awful lot like Soi-Feng's shikai.
>>
eventually we're going to learn how to manifest a Quincy bow. The arrows are just going to be hands flipping the bird
>>
>>40287174
Nah it's more than likely that Kido thing she did in the anime when she took Soi Fon off the cliffside at the execution

Yeah, it's taken Riku 100 years to get to this level, of blood, sweat and tears.

She will be a true monster by the time the 1000 year blood war arc happens.

With yourself completely deafened and your vision nearly ruined from a detached left retina, and with Rangiku and her squad bearing similar but less severe injuries, it was decided that the Ninth's deployment to the front lines would end with the Battle of Messines. By the time of the Battle of Paschendale not too long afterwards, Kyōraku's Eighth Division had replaced the Ninth at Ypres.

Your deployment had lasted around two years by that time, and after facing down a gauntlet of powerful Hollows culminating in a Vasto Lorde the Central 46 felt they could ask no more of you and your unit.

It took you a week to fully recuperate from your injuries sustained at Hill 60, even with Fourth Division Third Seat Kotetsu assigned specifically to your treatment.

It's a balmy summer day in mid-July when you hear a knock on the door to your hospital room. It can't be Yoruichi, she already visited you today.

"Come in," you announce, setting your editor's manuscript for this week's Seireitei news magazine aside for now.

A white-haired Captain opens the door, bowing politely.

"It's good to see you well again, Captain Kusajishi," Ukitake greets you warmly. "I was wondering if we could discuss a few things about your deployment..."

Second thread?
>>
>>40287412

Think Queen wants to end it on this thread, maybe.

2 years on the western front, brutal.

Oh boy, what could it be?

And that's all for this session. It's getting real late here, so I wanna go home and knock out.

Tomorrow will be the last planned session for a while due to a planned hiatus. I may be back for two weekends in late june/early july though, and by that point I expect Shadows of Zeon to run as well. It remains to be decided how I'll apportion my time, but I'll announce on twitter.

Archive's up, thanks for playing, and hope to see you tomorrow for the next man-made catastrophe!
>>
>>40287445
and in 20 years we get to do it all over again... maybe on the Eastern front though.
>>
>>40287457

Any social link changes? or anything else?
>>
>>40287472

In 15 years and later soul society will be dealing with the Japanese invasion.

In the next 2 years, there is the spanish influenza which should kill 50-100 million world wide. ~300k in japan.
>>
>>40287457
Social Link changes atleast?
>>
>>40287486
Only one, but it'll come up in casual banter next thread.
>>
>>40287472
I doubt it. At best, we'll probably try to stay in contact with the Valhallans and try to co-ordinate sorting out death and soul cycle related problems from each end. Bits of ideas exchange with the mod soul ballasts too, probably.
>>
>>40287539
im asuming its the way our squad thinks of us, speaking of which, is it about time we started kicking rangiku to start bankai training?
>>
>>40287457
How is Lil' Byakuya doing? Have Riku and Yoru been keeping up their schedule of screwing with him?

Did Kenny get a good chance to let loose during the war? And does it look like we'll have a chance to smack him around and help fulfill his fightboner anytime soon?
>>
>>40287626
it might also be with Mirai, since she learned about one of the Arrancar we keep in the basement
>>
>>40287539
Oh. I'm guessing it's primarily gonna involve Mirai, seeing as how she's in the loop now.
>>
>>40287638
>Have Riku and Yoru been keeping up their schedule of screwing with him?
Going to be honest, Going to be slightly miffed if we haven't
>>
>>40287701
Those two years of Yoruichi and Riku's deployment were the only time Byakuya could enjoy the narrow window of time for himself by spending it practicing on badly drawn cutesy animals.
>>
>>40287665

Yeah, may have to explain more things to Mirai. Things are going to be weird.

I doubt we can get through all of WW2 before Queen is gone for a bit. However may be able to Pearl harbor by then.
>>
>>40287804
>badly drawn
Truly, you must be an uncultured swine to dream of impugning such refined artistry
>>
>>40287856
It's kinda funny how quickly Mirai got inducted into the conspiracy (meeting Urahara and a friendly Arrancar) before Kaoru or even poor Kai.
>>
actually, this might be about the same time Hisana dies and Rukia gets adopted by Byakuya.

He totally keeps all the cutesy animals she doodles hidden in his room
>>
>>40287962
Did Byakuya get marries off screen then? I would have thought it would have been mentioned.
>>
>>40287962
I'd expect the marriage around now, it might have happened during the war which is why we wouldn't know about it until we got back. Which means we've got 3 or so years until she dies and Byakuya pretends to lose all his emotions for nearly a century
