>Disclaimer: These first three posts will be rather wordy. I'll try to set the scene as concisely as I can. Also, please keep in mind that I'm not American, in case I make geographical, historical or political errors.

"President Lyndon B. Arthur has recently declared Florida a Green zone, calling it a 'great victory for the Confederation.' This is the first green zone to be located outside of USA controlled territory. According to his vice president *kzzzt* future plans *kzzzzt* Louisiana...."

Your radio has grown silent. You try to change channels, hit it a few times, but nothing helps. You check your cell phone: no connection. You peek out of the window of your apartment and notice that the streets are abandoned, save for a few zombies shuffling about. Just your luck. It looks like your hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska, is lost.

You remember very well how it started. It all began in the year 2022, you had just graduated from university. Reports from the Deep South spoke of a highly contagious disease that rapidly decayed the body, most notably the nervous system. Some physicians theorized that it might've been a mutated form of Ebola, others compared it more to a highly agressive form of influenza. Whatever it may have been, it was a dangerous disease that was most potent when passed through bodily fluids, but could also infect others through arial droplets, through coughing or sneezing.

It started with a few isolated cases. These few isolated cases rapidly spread to affect entire cities, states and soon enough the entire country. Seeking to limit the impact of the disease on their own soil, Canada and Mexico closed off their borders. Despite the increased presence of 'zombies' across the USA, the government claimed everything was under control.

Now it's two years later and it's obvious that everything isn't under control. Several separatist groups have declared their independence from the American government and now seek to pull secure their own territory in whatever way possible.

The territories in blue are the territories controlled by the remnants of the United States of America. This is generally the safest and most prosperous region left in the land. It claims itself sovereign over the entire former United States, but lacks the military power to back it up, especially with the presence of zombies. It receives support from Canada and some nominal support from the EU. Its capital is Philedelphia, as Washington D.C. was considered to be too close to zombie infested lands.

In brown are the Confederate States of America. Being forced to deal with the problem without too much support from the central government, they declared their own independence and adapted the Stars and Bars as their national flag. Having abandoned the racist and pro-slavery attitude of its predecessor, it is now merely in favor of autonomy for the individual states, including in military affairs. Its capital is Montgomery, Alabama.

In red is the Republic of Texas. After seeing the Confederate States separate, and seeing how the central government was powerless to stop it, General Alexander McKenzie staged a military coup. The Texas Republic is now a military dictatorship with its capital in Austin, Texas.

In Yellow is the California Republic. Disconnected from the Central Government but not opposed to it per se, it saw itself forced to declare independence. It remained a democracy, with the only significant change being a switch to a social-democratic system according to the Scandinavian model (in as far as it's possible, at least). Its capital is Los Angeles, California.

In Green is the Northwest Commune. It is a collectivist state that seeks to drive out the zombies and achieve agricultural self-sufficiency.

Finally, in Grey, there's the Midwest Alliance. Once again, this region declared its independence in hopes of dealing with the problem without having to rely on the central government. Sadly for you, it has proven the most incompetent as state after state ended up being overrun.

The map to the left shows the general status of each state. Green zones are generally safe, and life continues there more or less as usual. Orange states are states with a decent government presence, but a significant zombie presence as well. Red states are entirely overrun, save for a few human settlements.

But you can deal with that later. For now, you need to leave your city.

Yes. Whatever vehicle you guys end up picking will be retroactively assumed to be in your possession, as long as it's available to civillians (so no tanks or jets).

The nearest "major" city is Detroit, followed by Chicago. They're probably close enough for us to get to in a day of hard travel. Detroit was a hellhole before the zombies, but there are probably still a few surviving gangs. Chicago could be more of a mixed bag. It is a very populous city so there could be survivors or abandoned military supplies. On the other hand, there could also be lots of zombies and we don't want to risk getting swarmed.

After making sure you have everything you need, you head downstairs with your gun in hand. Luckily, you have your bike was stalled in the building so none of the zombies have gotten to it yet. You followed the instructions of the Midwest Alliance and remained indoors until help would arrive, but now it's obvious that this isn't going to happen.

You hop on your bike and make drive out to the streets. The abandoned roads of Lincoln are filled with corpses, both immobile and mobile, and the remains of crashed cars, but with your bike you can weave your way through the chaos while maintaining a decent speed. The sound of your bike has drawn the attention of a few zombies, but you're too fast for them to keep up with you.

Before long, you find yourself outside of the city. You stop for a moment to catch your breath, but your fight for survival has only just begun. You take a moment to reflect on all the things I forgot to put in the OP. You are Lucas Porter, known as Luke by his friends, and you've lived in Lincoln for as long as you can remember. Your parents have moved to Florida a few years ago for their early retirement, and your younger brother is currently in Europe for his internship. Your family is safe, that's a relief. Now you only have to worry about yourself.

What will your next step be?
>Go to Chicago, the capital of the Midwest Alliance
>Go to Philadelphia, the capital of the USA
>Go to Montgomery, the capital of the CSA
>Go to Austin, the capital of Texas

Yes, your bike comes with a matching leather jacket and shades. Yes, you look absolutely badass in them.

I say we go east. Texas is a military dictatorship and likely to be a shitshow, plus Illinois is closer. Once we get to Illinois, we can find out if Chicago is good or not by word of mouth, and eventually we can make our way to the green zones of New England, provided that green zones aren't actually a myth put out to keep people from panicking. Even if they are, we can just sneak into Canada by water via the Great Lakes.

You think over your next steps, and decide East is the way to go. Your plan is to go to Chicago first and scope things out there, find out what the Midwest Alliance is doing and whether or not you should get involved. From Chicago, you can move on. You can either go to the CSA to remain in safe Florida or help the CSA against the zombies, you could go to the USA and enjoy the safety of their green zones or you can try sneaking into Canada. Or something else, you haven't thought about it yet. Nonetheless, you're heading for Chicago. It'll take you about 9 hours to get to Chicago, so if you step on it you might get there by nightfall.

You drive past Omaha and Des Moines, encountering many crashed vehicles and a few zombies along the way, none of which giving you any significant trouble.

Dusk starts setting in when you're close to Iowa City. By then, you encounter something different on the highway: you see a recently crashed car. Not too far from the crash site, two men are swinging around metal bars to try and keep a group of at least fifteen zombies away from them. They're holding out for now, but it's obvious that they're fighting a losing battle.

>>
So, what's our Clan name and aesthetic?

The odds are clearly stacked against the two men, even if you were to help them out. Sure, you have a bike and a handgun, but there's 15 of them, 15 zombies that can survive practically anything that doesn't destroy the brain. Just driving past them is both possible and tempting, but you feel that you have a duty to protect your fellow man. You draw your gun and rev up your bike.

You drive towards the small horde and open fire. With a few lucky shots, you manage to take down three of them. You then circle around them in hopes of drawing their attention, but it's no use: the two men quickly succumb to the zombies. A few of them stick around to consume their corpses, while the others shamble towards you.

There's no more reason to stick around, so you could just drive off and continue on your way to Chicago. However, it might be worthwhile to try and defeat the remaining 12 zombies so you can loot the car the two unfortunate men used.

You start wondering what kind of supplies the two men had in their car, but the horde of undead that's stumbling towards you lead you to believe that it might not be worth the trouble to figure it out. You weave your bike between the zombies and manage to pick up the metal bar one of the two men dropped. On your way out, you drive past one zombie and smack him in the face with the metal bar, cracking his skull with a satisfying crack. You've escaped unharmed, and you have a close combat weapon. It's not much, but it's good to have a weapon that doesn't require bullets to be used.

As the last of the suns rays color the sky a deep shade of orange, you start wondering what to do next.

With wire and pliars!
>>
It's almost night time. Not only do you need your rest, but you don't want to risk traveling at night when it's harder to see zombies and other hazards. You look for a safe spot to sleep.

About a mile before the first exit to Iowa City, you discover an abandoned gas station. This might make for a good place to rest. You enter it to see if anyone or anything is there. Luckily there's nobody there, but unfortunately most of the supplies have also been looted. You try to siphon some gas into your bike, but discover that there are only a few liters left, which is better than nothing. Looks like this place has already been looted by other survivors once or twice.

You park your bike inside of the gas station and barricade it with a few planks that are lying around inside. You see that the windows have already been boarded up, more proof of previous survivors having rested here. Scavenging the gas station only results in you finding a $20 bill, some pre-packaged sandwiches and a few soda cans. You force as much food and drinks as you can in your backpack, and have a pre-packaged sandwich and a diet coke for dinner. Not much of a feast, but you take what you can get. After your meal, you roll out your sleeping bag and try to get some sleep.

The next morning you are awoken by the sound of banging and scratching against the doors and (boarded up) windows. While you can't see outside, you strongly suspect that some zombies are trying to get in.

My idea was that most zombies weren't turned by other zombies, but humans who ended up with the infection. The fact that they're the weakest kind of zombie is also why somewhat succesful human resistance was possible and it's not a zombie 'apocalypse', in that humanity is doomed or close to doom
>>
>>40280903
Then they wouldnt work.
>>
>>40280913
This is why you shouldnt try to loot shit in a zombie apocalypse. Some other motherfuckers more than likely got all the good shit first.
>>
>>40280851
Yeah, necromancy. As in, the raising of corpses into the living dead. How is that not relating to zombies?

Zombies exist in dozens of different forms in different settings and cultures. A European shambling risen slave to a necromancer is a zombie just as much as a radioactive walking corpse or a viral victim. Also, yes, in some settings, zombies can sew parts back on, at least. Terry Pratchett's Discworld zombies, such as Reg Shoe, come to mind.
>>
>>40280913
Then why are we bothering with close-range weapons? Hell, why did we even pick up that metal bar with all the zombie germs on it? Don't we have one foot out of the grave at this point?

That's entirely possible.

But is it worse than being a human constantly on the run and hiding from zombies? It's kinda like, either you get ten slaps across the face immediately, or five slaps later.

Its worse.

>>40281228
As difficult as it is being on the run from and hiding from zombies, I imagine it would be much worse trying to run and hide from organized human opponents. They have everything from firearms, to drones, to tanks, not to mention a much more acute ability to plan and organize than the zombies. If we are to become a zombie, we will need to be prepared to combat the danger of real, intelligent, human opposition.
>>

Your heart skips a beat, but you try to remain calm. During moments like these, panicking is the worst thing you could do. You take a few deep breaths. "Stay calm, Luke. Stay rational." you whisper to yourself.

You start out by quickly rolling up your sleeping bag and grabbing the rest of your supplies. After that, you try to look for a way out. You consider forcing your way out on your motorcycle, but that'd be very risky. Instead you do the smart thing and look for a back entrance. It doesn't take long before you find one, and you quickly drive away. Most of the zombies keep clawing at the doors and windows as you drive past them, while a few turn around and hobble towards you. Luckily, none of them can keep up with you.

You continue on your way to Chicago. Having had a good nights rest and enough food to last you a few days, you're feeling pretty good about yourself.

You keep driving for the whole morning, encountering nothing out of the usual on the road. Zombies, carwrecks, corpses, at this point you've grown somewhat used to it. After a few hours, you can see Chicago looming in the distance. Some rudimentary defences have been built around the city, mostly consisting of brick walls with only a few entrances and exits. Over many parts of the city, the flag of the Midwest Alliance flies.

You approach one of the entrances and are stopped by two guards. Both of them are wearing full body armor and full faced helmets. "Sir, please answer a few questions before entering." orders one of the men. "Have you been bitten, contaminated or otherwise infected?". You shake your head. The guard then hands you a surgical mask. "Please put this on and follow me."

>Not dead, UNdead, it's like the opposite of being dead, you brainless meatbag.

The opposite of being dead is being alive.

Undead simply means not dead, this could apply to being alive, however it is always used to confer that one is dead, but somehow still moving, or conscious in some way, ala Vampires.

Vampires are, for all rights, dead, yet they still are conscious.

Zombies are dead, and as far as we know IC, not conscious.

So there is no way someone would WANT to be a moving corpse with no ability to know it is even existing.

You follow the orders of the guards. You put on the mask you were given and follow one of them into the city. Chicago appears to be relatively safe. Life seems to be going on normally, and you notice that all of its citizens are wearing surgical masks or something else to cover their mouths and noses. Nevertheless, there's something about the people of Chicago. It's something in their eyes, something in the way they move, something in the way they talk. There's fear and suspicion.

You're starting to wonder where this guard is leading you in this paranoid clinic. You can't help to ask for more information. "Where are you taking me?"

"To a clinic, sir." replies the guard flatly. "We'll have a doctor check you for any signs of infection. If you're clean, you're free to go."

"And what if I'm not clean?" The guard doesn't respond to your question and leads you to your destination in silence. After he has led you inside of a local clinic, the guard wishes you a good day and returns to his post.

It's a very large clinic, and inside another heavily armed guard directs you to a waiting area. All others present appear to be extremely nervous, and nobody bothers with small talk. Before long, a guard informs you: "Please go to room 14, Dr. Carter is ready to see you."

Within room 14, a young female doctor treats you without exchanging much small talk. She takes a blood sample and brings it to a back room. After a few minutes she returns. Even though you can't see her face, you can tell that she's smiling. "You're very lucky, sir. The tests came out negative, you're free to leave."

You're clean, that's a relief. Now you're free to do whatever you please in Chicago.

You're clean, you're in Chicago and you're safer than you've been in a long time. But you start to wonder why no measures preventing infection were taken in Lincoln, while things in Chicago seem to be pretty well organized. What's going on in the Midwest Alliance?

You park your bike somewhere secure and take a stroll through the city, checking your smartphone while you walk. It looks like you have a halfway decent connection in Chicago. You go to the internet and check out the online version of the Midwest Alliance's main newspaper: the Midwest Gazette. The most interesting articles you come across tell of the woes of the Midwestern government. The newspaper tells stories of government deficits, underequipped soldiers and indifference of the surrounding governments. One opinion peace even theorizes that the Republic of Texas remains passive purely in hopes of seeing the Midwest lose control of their Southwestern states, allowing Texas to expand there in 'self-defense'. There is however positive news: despite still strictly blocking immigration, the Canadian government has proven willing to trade, which will help the Midwest meet the demand for bottled water.

You pass by the city hall in hopes of learning more about the current state of affairs there, but you're not the only one. A large, angry crowd has gathered outside and is being held back by some guards. One of them is shouting a message through a megaphone. "We request that you remain calm and orderly. Your complaints have been heard and are currently being treated. Your wellbeing is our primarcy concern. Please return home to your families."

As far as you can tell, lack of a proper budget is the Midwests main concern.

Wandering around the city has left you pretty tired, and it's getting pretty late as well. For now, you don't really have anywhere you need to go, so you can afford staying in the city for a night. You only have $20 on you, so you decide to sell some of your stuff before finding a place to sleep.

You find yourself at a small corner store, where an elderly man is more than willing to help you. You reach into your backpack and bring out the supplies you want to sell. You can sell the following:

>6 pre-packaged sandwiches worth $2 each
>6 cans of soda worth $2 each
>8 canned vegetables worth $3 each

You can buy, among other things
>Sixpacks of 0.5 liter water bottles (for a total of 3 liters) for $3 each

>>
>>40282603
>6 cans of soda

>>40282603
Sell the soda and sandwiches. No reason to keep soda when water is cheaper and will serve us just as well, and the sandwiches might not last too much longer.

Can we get anything for selling the canned vegetables' cans for scrap?
>>
>>40282603
>6 cans of soda

>4 Sixpacks of 0.5 liter water bottles (for a total of 3 liters) for $3 each

We will still have $20 left over, and I doubt we can carry much more water. Does our bike have saddlebags?

>>40282727
So we sell the soda and the sandwiches, and buy four sixpacks of water, meaning we end up with $32.
>>
>>40282603
sell 5 soda
sell 3 can veg

you never know if anyone is willing to trade for soda
>>
>>40282774
No keep the Sandwiches.
>>
You think over what edible supplies you have. Considering how much the zombie outbreak has affected America, soda really is a luxury product. Water, on the other hand, is cheaper and will do hydrate you just as well if not better. Your sandwiches will also spoil much faster than your canned food. You sell all of your soda and sandwiches, and buy four sixpacks of water bottles. You get a net gain of $12 off of this trade.

After that, you look for a place to sleep. You find a motel not too far from where you originally parked your bike. It's a bit run down, but it'll do in a pinch. It's also pretty cheap, considering a room for a night is only $10, which means you have $22 left. After paying for your room, you take a quick shower and head to bed.

You start wondering about what you'll do from here on. Chicago doesn't seem too bad, so perhaps you'll stay here. You could also head to the greener pastures of the USA, or head for the CSA. Your parents are in Florida, so maybe you could move back in. The Texas Republic is also an option, it's a militaristic nation which could probably use a gun for hire. Going to California or the Northwest Commune means going back from where you came, probably not a good idea. As you weigh the options in your mind, you drift off to a dreamless sleep.

>End of part 1

Its simple.
We travel to the USA, looting as we go. Once there we muster some regiments of soldiers and foot march them across America. The Blue will once again battle the Grey for the rights of man (to not be eaten by the infected). Massed rifles would probably be the most ammo efficient, and if rail ways still worked they would be more efficient for transportation of supplies (outside of those we couldn't scavenge and scrounge).

The Union will either stretch from sea to shining sea, or be burned to ashes.
