You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

Currently, you were headed off to your first patrol, into the dreaded Shadowtree Forest. You had heard lots of stories about this place during training. Apparently, the whole place was haunted, and it certainly looked the part. Rather than the normal, straight trees you were used to seeing, the trees in Shadowtree were dark and twisted, looking more like shadowy tentacles than plants. But it was the darkness that really got you. The canopy of the trees was so thick, sunlight couldn't even get through. You couldn't tell where the leaves and branches of one tree began or ended.

"W-we're going in there?!" Alfie whimpers, and you see her VT stop in its tracks.

"Hey! Keep it moving!" Bannon snaps. "We don't have time to muck about here!"

>Give her a break, sir. It's our first patrol.
>Come on, Alfie, let's just keep moving.

"Come on Alfie, let's just keep moving." You say. "You've got us to watch your back."

"R-right." Alfie stammers, her shame evident in her voice.

"Come on, it's not that bad! Sure it's a bit dark and spooky, but we've been through there dozens of times, and we're perfectly fine!" Rock assures you all. "Just stick close to us and you'll be fine!"

"He means it literally, too." Rock's crewmate Alex adds. "It's vital you don't lose visual with us. It's easy to get lost."

"Eeep!" Alfie squeaks.

"Yeah, good job, Alex. Scaring the rookies right after I calmed them down." Rock sighs.

"I was just giving them advice." Alex replies, a bit confused.

"Hey damnit, stow the chatter!" Bannon barks again. "Let's move! I want to get his patrol done!"

You get the distinct feeling that Bannon isn't looking forward to this patrol, either.

"Roy, I think I saw movement at our 2 o' clock." Tarin warns.

"Let me see." You pop open the hatch and stand up to get a better view. It was peacetime so you didn't really have to worry about snipers or anything anyways. You scan the treeline and do indeed see movement. "Sir-"

"Yeah, I see 'em." Bannon sighs. "That's 8th Platoon. Probably just getting off patrol. I'll go meet up with them, see if they saw anything. Rock, you take one of the rookies with you and go on ahead."

"Roger that." Rock says. "So, who wants to go in first?"

"We'll go." You announce. You believe that the less time Alfie spent in Shadowtree, the better.

"Haha, that's the spirit!" Rock says happily as his VT pivots and begins marching off to the treeline. "Well, come on, then. No time to waste!"

"All right Tarin, fall in behind him." You order.

"Roger." Tarin nods as she hits the throttle and your VT rumbles as it moves forward.

As your speed picks up, the treeline looms ever larger. You begin to realize that the trees in the forest were MUCH larger than you initially thought. These trees weren't as tall as your VT, they towered over it. Easily three or four times as high. However, even with that huge size, the spaces between the trees were narrow and small, with few places for a VT to fit into.

"Looks like a challenge, Tarin." You mutter. "Looks nothing like the forests back home."

"It's still a forest. I think I can manage." Tarin says simply.

You can't help but smile at that little remark. It might not show, but Tarin didn't like losing or backing down either.

"All right, kids, we got two choices here." Rock says cheerfully. "We can stick to the main trail, which is easier to navigate and much safer, but the Reiks know about it and avoid it when they can. Good if you just want to breeze through a patrol, but if you want to catch some trespassers..."

"We'll have to stray off the beaten track?" You surmise.

"Oh wow, you're a sharp one. I like you!" Rock laughs.

You see Rock's VT immediately turn East and push through a wall of branches. Tarin follows suit and plunges your VT into the thick undergrowth. You can hear high pitches squeals as branches scratch and claw against the hull of your VT, as if trying to tear the vehicle open to get at the meaty contents within. This is punctuated by loud cracks and snaps as less sturdy branches break under the pressure of your VT.

"Don't let the cannon get snagged, Tarin." You warn.

"I know."

"And make sure you're raising the legs high enough so we don't trip on roots."

"I know."

"And make sure to manage our speed. We don't want to ram into a tree."

Tarin this time just elbows you in the shoulder and glares at you for a second before turning back to her viewport.

"I know." She says bluntly.

"Hey, not bad! You guys are naturals at this!" Rock laughs. "Took me weeks to get the hang of things! Not that I'm jealous or anything!"

"You really are." Alex says simply. "It's a natural emotion."

"Jeez, ruining the mood like always." Rock groans.

"Also, I think we should slow down. If we go any farther we might cross into Reikland." Alex warns.

"Nah, I think we're still a good ways away. I haven't seen any border markings." Rock assures his commander.

"Except every time we plant border markings they get covered up by the undergrowth." Alex counters. "We might actually already be in Reikland."

"Hey, their problem not letting us cut down this spooky forest. Besides, the Reiks keep getting 'lost' on our side all the damn time. I'd love to throw that excuse back in their faces!"

"Let's keep going." You say. "What's the harm?"

"Fine..." Alex sighs. "Just be careful."

Your pair of VTs continue to plod on a northeastern path, pushing aside the thick brush and occasionally, bumping into or scraping against the odd tree. You're tempted to turn out to get some better visibility, but you have to keep reminding yourself that course of action is just asking to take a tree branch to the face.

"Hey, wait a minute." You squint your eyes. "Is that... is that daylight?"

"That can't be right." Rock mutters. "We should still be smack dab in the middle of the forest!"

"Let's go check it out, then." You say. "Tarin, move forward. Slowly."

"Roger." Tarin nods and your VT lumbers forward.

The rays of daylight begin to get brighter and stronger. Your VT continues to plod forward until the daylight becomes nearly blinding. Tarin seems to pause for a second.

"What's wrong?" You ask.

"There's no more resistance." Tarin says. "We're out of the forest."

"That can't be right." You look out your viewport.

"Holy shit, do you see what I'm seeing?" Rock gasps.

"Evidently, the forest is gone." Alex observes.

Indeed, as your eyes adjust, you can see what had to be an artificially created clearing, judging from all of the cut down trees and tree stumps jutting out of the ground. And across the clearing, you could see a series of black vehicles, both wheeled and VT. The wheeled vehicles were trucks, while the VTs seemed to be equipped with large saw blades or grappling arms. The saw-armed VTs trudged forward, slicing through tree trunks like wheat, while the VTs with grappling arms picked up the fallen trucks and dutifully loaded them onto the trucks.

"Who the hell are those guys?" You ask.

"Reik soldiers!" Rock hisses.

Not to mention draw a larger force . The deforestation effort these guys are pulling can mean a couple things, but the two main things that come to mind are laying the foundations for a large base or harvesting resources--hell, it could even be both.

Or maybe they're clearing a very large path, or setting up a place for artillery?

Either way, we need to report this, and hopefully find out what they're doing.

Germany was at peace with every one else after WW1 but started to build up it army again when they were not allowed to

these guys are cutting down the forest they said no one should cut down and are slowly getting closer to our country by cutting down the forest
>>
>>40292873
our they could also just be simply cutting a path for a future invasion or something along those lines. You saw how hard it was just to navigate TWO VTs through those woods, bet it would be a nightmare to try and get a whole division through.

"I think we need to call this in, Rock." You say.

"You're damn right we do." Rock growls. "The trees here play hell with long range comms, though. We'll have to either physically link up with the Lieutenant or we get out of the forest and radio HQ."

"Um, doesn't look like the Reik guy are sitting still either!" You say as you keep your eyes on the logging crew. The loggers on foot immediately flee for the relative safety of the trees, while the VTs are already forming an impromptu battle line. Even if they didn't seem to be armed with ranged weapons, you didn't really want them to be getting close.

"I don't like having to turn our backs on these guys." You say. "They might try to hit us in the back."

"This isn't something they want going public." Tarin agrees.

"You have a point there." Rock says. "One of us might have to stay to pin them down."

"Don't worry. We'll stick here for a few seconds and then we'll be right behind you." You assure him.

"All right, good luck, guys." You see Rock's VT pivot around and barrel back into the forest. Meanwhile, Tarin backs up your own VT to the treeline, where you can see still see the 4 enemy VTs, which are advancing slowly on you. Two were armed with saws and the other two were armed with the grappling claws. You pivot your turret to point your VT's 76mm cannon directly at them. It slows their advance, but they still creep forward little by little.

"I don't like this. I think we should go." Tarin says.

"If we do, they'll be right on us. You can see that they're looking for an opening." You warn.

"I'm pretty sure I can lose them." Tarin assures you.

"Absolutely sure?"

"All right, Tarin, let's get out of here." You say, feeling nervous at staring down these enemy VTs. "Full reverse!"

"Roger." Tarin nods as she pulls back on one of the sticks. The VT's engine whines as the bottom half of the vehicle spins around and begins dashing back while keeping the guns trained on the enemy VTs. Almost immediately, the enemy VTs break into a sprint as they attempt to chase after you.

>dat body side armor

Goddamn that's a tasty target if I ever saw one. Pixel, consider looking at the King Tiger or the later Shermans. Note the sloped armor on the sides and front--this was a protective measure to help defeat AT weaponry by spreading out the impact site and possibly deflecting an oncoming projectile.

>>

>>
>>40294258
not the Abrams, but you can totally kill everyone in it with a few dollars worth of gasolin and a glass bottle. the problem's getting within throwing distance
>>
>>40294275
You mean like the Pz.4 with the unangled armor?
>>
>>40294210
Not really. Sherman was fairly well armored. Enough to withstand pretty much everything bar the 8.8 cm when it was first introduced, and still offered decent protection against the long barreled against some 7.5 cm guns the Germans had when angled properly. The 7.5 cm on the Pz. VI is a different matter. You know the much vaunted armor of the T-34? Not really any better than a Sherman in terms of actual protection.

Worse, my bullets could Pearce the armor at times, a German tank gun would one shot it from any hit.
>>
>>40294283
Still false. Anybody got the webm of the Abrams that gets molotoved?
>>
>>40294258
you can. it's just a really lucky shot, you'd have to get it to ignite right over an air intake valve. so if you have a couple hundred people throwing molatovs at one Abrams they MIGHT immobilize it
>>
>>40294210
Haha, let's not start that debate!

>>40293933
"Go, Tarin! Go go go!" You yell.

"Going." Tarin nods as she puts the VT into full reverse. However, the odd thing is that Tarin doesn't even slow down at all, and she just gallops through the trees at full speed. It's then you realize that she's literally retracing her steps. You're honestly amazed that she's managed to completely memorize the path she took through this forest.

"Hold on, this is going to be bumpy." Tarin says simply as she jukes another tree. As you watch through your viewport, one Reik VT isn't so lucky and slams headfirst into a tree with a loud CLANG, causing the trunk to splinter and crack. Another quickly gets bogged down in the thick branches and is forced to slow down, quickly getting left behind.

However, two VTs, one saw and one claw, don't catch up to you but manage to keep pace, trailing behind by an uncomfortably small distance.

"Almost there." Tarin assures you.

>FATE POINT GAINED
>You have 1 Fate Point!

You lose track of one of the VTs, as it seems to fall behind in the thick growth. However, the the last saw-armed VT merely charges through the trees, shearing them down as it goes with reckless abandon. While your VT was armored, you weren't sure how it would stand up to reinforced, sharpened saw blades that could cut through trees like air.

"Tarin?" You ask nervously.

"We're there." Tarin announces as your VT finally breaks through the treeline, now thankfully back where you started.

However, when your eyes adjust to the light, you can see the VTs of 7th Platoon ready and waiting.

"Whoa! Check fire! Check fire! We're friendly!" You yell on the radio.

"OH SHIT! FIRE FIRE FIRE!" You hear Bannon bellow.

You wince as you see three 75mm cannons fire in unison. However, instead of hitting you like you had fared, the shells sail over your VT and into the Reik VT trailing you, which had also just broken the treeline and exposed itself. You see the three shells punch holes into the enemy VT, and it stumbles backwards before exploding violently, no doubt its fuel being set off.

"Holy shit, you weren't lying!" Bannon yelps. "They were really in there!"

"What did I tell you?!" Rock says.

"R-Roy, Tarin, are you t-two okay?" Alfie asks, her voice fraught with worry.

"Yeah, we're fine." You assure her.

"Are there any more behind you?" Axel asks.

"There were three more, but we managed to shake them off. Well, Tarin managed to shake them off."

You can almost swear you see Tarin puff with pride out of the corner of your eye.

"Anyways, I think that confirms it, Sir. We should report this into HQ." Parker speaks up. "If what Rock is saying is true, there's been a serious breach in the peace treaty."

"Yeah, yeah you're right." Bannon mutters.

There's a minute or two of silence as Bannon presumably gets HQ on the line and informs them of the situation.

"All right, HQ says that they're sending 8th Platoon back to support us and we're to perform recon in force." Bannon says. "We'll all move in together and we take that logging camp."

And so your platoon sets off. Your 76mm armed VT takes the lead, with Axel and Alfie's more heavily armored VT following close behind you and Bannon and Rock's VTs bringing up the rear. However, as you follow Tarin's path back to the logging camp, you notice that the other Reik VTs that had been pursuing you were gone. Perhaps they fell back when they lost your trail?

Essentially covered already. The 3 inch gun had less penetration for a couple reasons, including less chamber pressure because McNair, and it was strange in the fact that the original shell had an explosive charge on the end that was meant to explode inside a tank following a penetration. It didn't work as advertized, sometimes exploding before a penetration.

You make good time following your tracks back to the camp. However you get the feeling that something is wrong.

"Tarin, do you get the feeling that something is... different here?" You ask.

"Yeah, I'm getting a weird feeling too." Tarin nods. "I think they're close."

Suddenly, like an ancient beast, a Reik VT bursts out from the trees, its viewport glowing a furious red like an eye. Your VT shakes and trembles as the enemy slams into you, steel hulls clashing with a loud CLANG. Fortunately, Tarin is quick witted enough to start reversing direction to absorb some of the shock of the impact and to prevent your VT from being knocked over.

Unfortunately, judging from the panicked radio cries, it seems the other two remaining logging VTs have similarly ambushed the rest of your platoon.

"Can you get the cannon in line?!" Tarin grunts as she grips her control sticks tight, trying to fight against the other VT.

In fact, the end of your VT's barrel was clanging against the front of the enemy VT's hull repeatedly. You could probably fire it directly into the vehicle, but you weren't too sure what would happen if you fired it at point blank like this.

"I might be able to." You grunt. "Can you try pushing it off us first?"

"I can try." Tarin scowls.

Because you insist on not reading it, here we go. Taken directly from the thread.

>M2D1 STRIKE WOLVERINE

>Taking a separate path from the C model, the D model swaps the 75mm cannon with a high velocity 76mm cannon, giving the D model vastly improved armor penetration capability against enemy VTs, as well as increased range. However, due to the cannon's design, it cannot utilize HE shells effectively and therefore has poorer performance against infantry.

>Fire now.
we're not using high explosive rounds, and we where leading the group so it's not like we have to worry about shooting our allies behind the guy

Well... Pressure can fuck over our barrel if it can't escape. We might damage the gun.

Cannons aren't meant for jousting.

you were okay with the premise of high school girls firing tank cannons at each other on an aircraft carrier for fun, but jousting is where you draw the line?
>>
>>40295942
I knew someone would post that webm in response. That's a good way to ruin your barrel. Bent barrel means your tank is fucked.

"Go Tarin, get this guy off us!" You yell.

"Hang on!" Tarin grunts as she revs up the throttle, pouring more power in the VT's engine.

I havent watched past about 8 minutes into the first episode. But the tanks is a reason everyone seems to give when saying why I should try it again
>>
>>40296190
oh, the entire show is ridiculous, don't expect hardcore accuracy. it'd be like watching jormungand or black lagoon for the guns.

With a loud roar, your VT's engine receives a sudden burst of power and it vaults forward, pushing directly against the enemy VT and forcing it back. The enemy is caught completely off guard, and sent stumbling back before crashing into a tree directly behind it, and just so happening to give you the perfect amount of distance away from it.

"Firing!" You yell as you hit the trigger.

Your VT rumbles as the cannon fires, sending a 76mm shell drilling directly into the VT. Its armor might as well have been paper against your armor piercing shell, especially this close. The VT then catches fire and explodes.

"You guys okay?" You swivel around to check on the rest of the platoon. You see a pair of smoking Reik VT wrecks. With their shorter 75mm barrels, it seemed the rest of the platoon fared a bit better in the melee battle.

"Yeah, we're fine." Axel says.

"Not a scratch!" Rock says happily.

"Come on, quit wasting time!" Bannon grunts. "Go go go!"

With the immediate threat defeated, your platoon proceeds further ahead to the artificial clearing.

"Come on, let's get them!" Bannon whoops as his VT pulls ahead of the pack.

"Well there he goes. Looks like his blood is up." Rock chuckles. "Let's move!"

Your platoon finally enters the deforested clearing. You can see the trucks are still here, so they obviously hadn't had time to pack up and leave just yet. In fact, you could see the Reik workers desperately pulling up the stakes to get the hell out of dodge.

"Ha! We got them on the run!" Bannon says happily.

"I wouldn't be so sure..." Parker says uncertainly. "Look east."

And that's when you see it. Red optics winking on in the darkness on the opposite end of the clearing as more Reik VTs begin scuttling out like insects, their crimson eyes focusing solely on your little platoon.

"Well shit." Bannon sighs.

>And that's it for tonight! As always, next thread is next week! Don't forget PJ Witches on Sunday and Ace Combat on Friday!

Further proof that this quest is Tarin's quest to win.
