You suggested going towards the right side of the canyon where the rest of your skitarii cohort might be found. All the team got ready and packed their stuff, even if we were ready to march we all stood quiet.

Karelia was silent and looking around with her two hands places on the sides of her head, you didn’t needed to see under her layers of cloth and her mask to know that her eyes were surely closed and that what she was doing was using her powers to scan the area around and try to find other minds.

After another five long and idle minutes she seemed to return to reality and got inside one of the Chimeras without saying a word. She creeped you; who knew what kind of plan did she had on that scheme making and warp touching mind. You were still kind of lucky, the effects of her warpsteel mask didn’t affected you and neither did her powers. You were afraid but the rest of the mercs would surely be completely terrified of her presence.

The march advanced in complete silence, it seemed that the mix of fear that both you and her infused on those people finally made them be compliant and take this mission seriously. It was true that none of us was a true guardsman but still the jokes and other kind of attitude that happened on the past were totally out of place.

Today was our fourth day on this forsaken planet and none of us had been still been able to gather any trophy. At first I thought that killing and butchering two proofs would be easy but the fact that those xenos are cannibalistic carnivores makes it into a way harder task. Even if your team won a Skirmish and slayed all the Kroot foes staying on the battleground to recollect the trophies was a risky quest. Sooner or later other kindreds would come to feast on the bodies attracted by the smell of the fresh blood. Surely more than one participating team had won fights against those aliens just to be attacked soon after by another tribe.
>>
>>40301864
Keeping the march and continuing advancing towards an indeterminate location seemed like the best option so far.

Sighting the enemy in the distance wasn’t so uncommon, more than once your team saw a lone Kroot with apparently mutations on itself roaming on its own, those unbound Kroot seemed to be used to be hunted and attacked from all factions because no matter how stealthy your team was getting closer to them seemed to be an impossible task, they always ended sniffing your human essence and absconding in a cowardly fashion. From time to time members of the Sweeping Claws also flew above, you didn’t knew if their keen predatory senses were able to notice your team or they simply ignored your presences, on all the occasion those flying predators continued sweeping the skies until they got lost on the far away horizon.

Both you and the rest of the team felt as if you were observed. You grabbed your auspex and connected your eyes with it. The scans of the gadget were directly feed to your optical nerves but still you were unable to find anything discernible, the rock seemed to be way too thick to clearly let the waves of the scanner resonate and show you what was behind.

Then a tremble happened, you opened the superior hatch to look around and see what was happening. It wasn’t a natural occurrence or a tectonic displacement. The ground around the three Chimeras started to tear and crackle by moments.

“HIT THE PEDAL!” You yelled to the skilled driver while at the same time yelling the same in lingua-technis to the other two vehicles to order them to accelerate. It was a brave yet fruitless effort, the ground fell and with it ourselves. The fall wasn’t really big, there was an underground cavern of some sort with big and shiny crystals that now reflected the sunlight creating several multicolored prisms that illuminated the area with their chromatic lights.
>>
>>40301889
You were able to endure the fall unharmed yet somewhat dizzy and confused. From the other two vehicles the mercs and crewmen got out, they were also mostly unharmed with the exception of a couple that hit their heads against the interior surfaces of the vehicle during the rough landing.

Even with the sunlight and the reflection of several crystals the cavern was still widely shrouded in a veil of darkness. If your suspicions were right and this didn’t happen naturally then the enemy had to be close. It was strange thought; if they truly intended to lure your team into a trap they could have done the chasm way deeper to kill us all instead of giving us small concussions and stunning us momentarily.

When the engines were shut down we all became able to notice the sound of at least a hundred respiration sounds and gurgling around us. There was no time to react, soon several torches illuminated the cavern, a mix of Kroot from the Mantle and Rockborne were there. This seemed to be a trap indeed, not a lethal one but a trap that gave them their food just where the Kroot wanted.

>Open fire and order the rest to do the same.
>Send Wurgen out of the hole and order it to search for your Skitarii cohort to inform them of what happened.

Your surroundings suddenly become incredibly confusing as the Kroot throw away their torches and cover everything with an shroud of darkness. You open fire and immediately as if an order had been given the rest started to do the same. The lights of their weapons reflected intensely on the surface of the crystals turning every explosion into a shockwave of blinding lights. The exchange between blinding lux and complete darkness made our receptive brains feel confused and our eyes tired, fighting in an stroboscopic light area probed to be an almost impossible task.

With a quick mind order your sent your faithful servoskull Wurgen to the surface in the search of Aid.

The battle turned to be a complete chaos for both sides, both us and the Kroot from the Mantle fought in disadvantage in the darkened areas and the underground used Rockborn suffered from the same yet inverse fate, they could see in the dark but the sudden explosions and the amplified lights that they evoked were a complete bane for their poor eyesight.

"GET THE PSYKER! WE NEED HER SPIRIT TO CREATE MORE SHAMANS!"

Yelled one of the Mantle's shapers. You didn't knew if they wanted her dead because her position as the leader or due to her spirits. If they were able to replicate warp sorcery via genetic acquisition then Emperor better had mercy on you and your teammates.
>>
>>40302510
Your plasma rifle impacted one of the muscular Rockborn in the chest and the shoulder, soon the plasmatic goo started corroding its strong flesh and leaving muscles and sinew painfully exposed but not even that was able to stop it. Even with more plasma balls landing on his half naked body the beast was able to grab one male crewsman and rip it in two before the caustic touch of your particular rifle ended finishing it off.

After about ten intense minutes that seemed like entire days Karelia seemed to have been ticked enough to decide to go on an overdosed fury. The faint glow that usually covered her when she used her telekinetic powers turned into a great blue light that covered her completely as if she were a pupae of some kind...the next thing you were able to see and feel was a sudden blast that grabbed all the Kroot and violently threw them away from the hole in the ceiling.

For our surprise not all of them fell again, this was mainly for two reasons, Karelia still kept control over some and decided that they needed to be interrogated and also because the last main tribe had been flying and observing our fight from the skies, looking at all those Kroot being throw at them was something like a miracle, for the preying eyes of the Sweeping Claws all those enemies in the air were nothing but meat to feed from.

Still covered in her blue light she elevated the Chimeras to the surface and then us. The few Kroot that she spared were mostly shapers and a couple of regular carnivores, all of the of the tribe of the Mantle.

From time to time a chunk of gory flesh fell from the skies, the winged predators were having a feast above your heads but your team was too weakened to engage them in combat and along with you took cover inside the armored chassis of the Chimeras. The overcome of the fight was pretty grimm, there had been casualties but until the fight was entirely over the complete report of damages couldn't be done.
>>
>>40302526

With the exception of the medics and the wounded we all got our faces into the windows to see the Inquisitress outside. Karelia stood in the surface with the four enemy Kroot still on her invisible grasp.

"Why do you want to eat me?"

She asked calmly to a regular carnivore warrior. Hearing such disturbing question accompanied with a relaxed tone made everything even more unsettling.

"Shaper says your flesh is special! Shaper says your flesh will make more Shamans! We need Shamans! They are the key to the Stars!"

The glow on her body became less potent until her body became visible again, the only parts where her strange magical glowing remained were on her two hands. She extended the index finger of her right hand and then all the dim light that surrounded her fist concentrated on the tip of her finger, she then somehow proceeded to use her telekinesis as some sort of scalpel and started scalping the captured Kroot in an incredibly slow pace.

"Why do you want to eat me?" She asked again.

"NGHAAAA! WE WANT TO LEAVE! WE WANT TO LEAVE!"

Still without a clear answer Karelia ended scalping it and then with the xenos still alive plucked its brain from its opened cranium.

Most warriors stopped observing, it was both incredibly disturbing and offsetting, besides being witness of an Inquisitor's work was pretty much asking for trouble.

The alien brain was launched into the sky only to be catch by the quick claw of a winged fiend, it seemed that Karelia knew of their presence and tolerated them for know as they worked as a psychological fear inducers in the spirits of the Kroot from the Mantle.

With a single movement the brainless corpse of the interrogated alien fell to the ground completely immobile. The last three interrogates were Shapers, maybe their elevated status quo would make them be more appreciate of their feeble and pathetic lives and cooperate more with Karelia, doing so wouldn't assure that they would live of course, but maybe their deaths would be quicker and less gruesome.

Once again, the same question with the same cold voice:

"Why do you want to eat me?"

"YOU ARE THE ANSWER ITSELF, YOU CAN USE UNSEEN FORCES! WE WANT THOSE INVISIBLE FORCES THAT RESIDE IN YOUR FLESH! THE MANTLE IS SO CLOSE TO ASCENDING!"

It seemed that this subject was somewhat more clear on their objectives but still way too cryptic for the impatient Karelia, soon one of the Kroot's eyes started slow and painfully popping out of its orbit, soon the ocular organ floated between them two, a second later it was nothing but a uniform blended mass of red and peach. The three remaining Kroot yelled in pain, but the screams of the tortured one were the loudest.

"Why do you want to eat me?"
>>
>>40303008

This simple question started to repeat so many times that it was slowly becoming a traumatic codeword in their minds, by the time the last Kroot heard that question it would be so triggered by the past ones that were asked the same and then tortured to death that it will not have any other option but to confess.

"YOU ARE THE KEY TO SHAMANS! SHAMANS ARE THE KEY TO THE STARS! THE SWEEPING CLAWS HAVE ANOTHER KEY BUT IT IS HIDDEN! THE WINGED FOE WILL NEVER GIVE US THEIR KEY! WE ARE CREATING OUR OWN KEY!"

In a blink the ribs of the Kroot pushed inside its organs and stabbed itself, the sharp bones soon protruded from its own back covered in crimson alien blood. Another one dead, two left.

On one corner of your HUD the indicator of an incoming message started to blink. Looking at that envelope symbol felt cathartic to you. So many time without any transmission nor the possibility to do them made you feel completely mute and even somewhat stressed.

Karelia I think they want to eat you so they can gain psychic powers, to navigate out of the system. Kroot take attributes from what they eat and you are a very powerful psyker. If they could attain that and had ship access they could get off world, or "to the stars"

>Continue observing.

The next Kroot was shivering and shaking in pure fear, Karelia's invisible grips held him tighter, pressing its neck and other important areas and provoking some suffocation.

"Why do you want to eat me?"

Those seven words sounded like a threat at this point. The two deceased bodies started to twitch, surely it was just another telekinetic trick but it was still incredibly fear inducing.

"THE SWEEPING CLAWS HAVE A TEMPLE, THE TEMPLE IS THE KEY! WE CANNOT TAKE THE TEMPLE, WE WILL MAKE OUR OWN TEMPLE! THE TEMPLE IS HIDDEN! WE HAD NO OTHER OPTION!"

The Kroot suddenly started to have all its skin ripped out, with the muscles of its chest and half of its alien digestive system exposed she asked again.

"Why do you want to eat me?"

"WE KNOW THAT THE SHAMANS CAN ARE THE KEY TO THE STARS, WITHOUT THE KEY WE CANNOT ENTER THE OTHERREALM!"

More of its skin started to rip off and turning into a long leathery rope that slowly started to tighten around its neck.

"Why do you want to eat me?"

"We...We want to be free..."

Those were its last words, he was then strangled with its own skin and sent flying upwards to the delight of the Sweeping Claws. Only one Kroot Shaper left.

"Why do you want to eat me?"

"I OFFER YOU A TREAT!"

"...I'm listening."

"I AM ALREADY DEATH AT YOUR HANDS ITS JUST THAT MY BODY DOESN'T KNOWS IT YET! EVEN IF I GAVE YOU THE STRAIGHTEST ANSWER YOU WOULD KILL ME!"
>>
>>40303788
It seemed that this particular Kroot was more intelligent than the rest.

"Go on."

"I WILL SPEAK AND EXPLAIN, BUT IN EXCHANGE YOU WILL RETURN ME MY SWORD AND LAUNCH ME TOWARDS THE SWARM OF SWEEPING CLAWS! I WISH TO DIE A HONORABLE DEATH IN THE MIDST OF BATTLE, NOT TORTURED LIKE THE REST OF MY KINDRED."

After a brief pause she gave her answer.

"Conceded, you have a minute."

"THE ANCESTORS OF MY ANCESTORS CAME TO THIS SYSTEM BEFORE THE HUMANS DID AND WE BECAME STRUCK! AFTER GENERATIONS WE DEVELOPED INTO THE DIFFERENT TRIBES, THEN HUMAN CAME AND WITH THEIR HUNTS AND WARRIOR SPIRITS MORE TRIBES WERE ERASED AND OTHERS BORN!"

"THREE MAIN TRIBES REMAIN NOW, THE STRONG BUT WEAK ROCKBORN THAT JUST WANT PEACE AND LIVE AWAY, THEY ARE COWARDS! THE SWEEPING CLAWS THAT THINK OF THIS PLANET AS A PARADISE AND WANT TO STAY HERE TOGETHER! AND FINALLY US, THAT HAVE EATEN SO MANY HUMANS THAT WE HAVE GOTTEN THEIR EXPANSIONIST AND FREE SPIRITS!"

"THE CLAWS KNOW THE LOCATION WERE THE SHIP WE CAME FROM IS BUT OUR TRIBE FORGOT IT SEVERAL SUMMERS AGO! WE DISCOVERED THAT THE HUMANS USE THEIR SHAMANS TO MANAGE THEIR SHIPS INTO THE OTHERREALM! WE WILL DO THE SAME!"

With this said the Kroot was give its sword and propelled into the skies.

>I have to take a quick dinner break, see you guys in about ten minutes or so
>>
>>40303813
So we learned two things, the kroot have a ship and they are actively trying to become intersteller again. The kroot, as a vile xeno, should not be allowed to the stars because they are xenos. Looks like we're ship hunting now, a kroot ship would make a wonderful trophy, although I'm curious as to what it'd actually be capable of, I don't have a very high expectation for them.
>>
>>40304217
look here for link to what their ship is.>>40303267
>>
>>40304271
My bet is the rockborn have its location, we should probably interrogate them for it. Oh wait, thats right, we murdered them all.

I have no regrets, in fact, if we murder all of the kroot we never need to find that ship.
>>
>>40303813

It was obvious now. The Kroot from the mantle wanted to leave the planet and in their ignorance believed that they could do so by acquiring psychic powers and stealing ships during the rendezvous moment. It was impossible to know in which one of the subtraction points would they attack and how big their "Shaman" number was but the threat was incredibly big.

Their chances of leaving the world were pretty much null but with all the combat capable warriors stationed on this same moon if the Kroot managed to reach orbit they would be very capable of raiding the different ships and space stations and end multiplying, their adaptability would make them able to colonize the planets that are way too toxic to human life would offer little resistance... once Charonis System fell completely under their control they would sooner or later discover how to leave and attack the neighboring Systems, becoming a great threat to the Imperium and soon to all humanity.

The winged Kroot seemed to be more traditionalist and religious, they thought that this planet was a paradise that gave them fresh food annually and that the Mantle shouldn't spread further. For such predatory creatures that would be a logical viewpoint. It was kind of ironic how their primitive lifestyle made them be the lesser enemy in this situation.

Allying with the Sweeping Claws against a common enemy was something unthinkable but still a possibility, they knew were the ship they originally came in is and thus they have to be protected to keep that location safe and secure. Surely the Inquisitress was thinking somewhat similar to you. This was a desperate situation and it needed desperate measures.
>>
>>40303813
wow the way karelia goes about gathering information is efficient methodical and breathtaking.
>>
>>40304338

Suddenly the lupine bleached skull of Wurgen appeared in front of you scaring you and making you fall backwards. You then checked the still blinking message before the machine spirit of the program became angry from your disregarding.

++SKITARII TEAM -1- COMING TO YOUR LOCATION++
++AWAITING ORDERS++

++( IF ) ORDERS ARE NOT GIVEN++
++( THEN ) ASSUME SENDER IS DECEASED++
++( ELSE ) OBEY ORDERS++

++( IF ) SENDER IS DECEASED++
++( THEN ) KILL ALL ENEMIES IN THE AREA AND SEARCH BODY++

Your Skitarii cohort had been awaiting for orders and you ignored them, the most logical outcome of your silence was to assume you were dead and to kill all the possible enemies to clear any possible danger.

Quickly you started coding the orders that explained that the Sweeping Claws didn't had to be killed as they were possible allies but you were too late, their transports and warriors came soon after Wurgen and with it a salvo of electric fire and other kind of munitions that shredded the xenos, the mercs and crewsmen on your side and with their morale restored from the massacre got out of their vehicles and added their firepower. Soon there was no one flying, they had been hunted. Your chances to question them were as dead as themselves.

They don't want to exterminate the planet thought, it is a good way to train recruits and the presence of xenos makes the population forget the depressing life they lead and focus their problems on them. It's the classical "Panem et circenses"

I just want to clear something up, but there's no threat of immediate kroot insurgency is there? They need to get something that can steer the ship, assuming it's in working condition already, and for that they believe the flesh of a psyker will be necessary.

Karelia is the only psyker here and it's already a pretty large priority of ours to keep her alive, but even then there's no guarantee that her death will be sufficient to get them airborn.

Let's not get in a panic and lose our heads over this.
>>
>>40304572
Maybe I didn't explained myself clear enough... The Sweeping Claws have a ship that it is hidden and are defending.

The Mantle wants to get psykers to STEAL A HUMAN SHIP.

And if you guys have forgotten it due to Karelia's meddling with the family of Nalasha and the fact that she has a psyker daughter the Governess has been sending the overstock of psykers to be killed for years.

Do you still think that the situation isn't fucked up?

>>
>>40304644
When you put it like that, it really seems more worrying.
I assumed before that the mantle were trying to steal the Sweeping claws' ship.

Could we somehow trick the Mantle to try to steal the ship on which the Governess would take flight? If they killed each other we would be better off.
>>
>>40304697
That isn't clear yet but Heracor theorizes that they want to assault a rendezvouz team, go to the ship in orbit and then attack the rest of the ships across the system.

>Try to find if there is any surviving Sweeping Claw

Everybody starts to search for bodies to butcher and thropies to get. Even if only a couple are neccesary getting more obviously gets you more respect, besides having spare body parts also got you assured to be collected even if you lost some along the way. The bad thing of carrying all those corpse parts was that you would become a beacon of aromas that would attract other tribes...

Still you left your disgust and started to loot the battlefield. At the end you ended grabbing a lower jaw from a Rockborn, a hand from a Mantler and a spine from a Sweeping Claw.. The bodies around were from the members of the tree main tribes plus several human ones, it was pretty clear from which one belonged each piece of meat...The Rockborn where still inside the hole they dug and their bodies were filled with shotgun and other fiream holes, the other two tribes were on the surface next to your location; The Mantle was mostly maimed and cut down by the razor claws of their winged nemesis and from the Sweeping Claw's there were several broken and teared limbs that had been separated from their bodies during the impact that came after the blizzard of fire.

Not even with their air advantage the flying aliens were able to notice the fact that another army was approaching from their flank. The ecstasy that produced to them the devouring of the flesh apparently overdosed their senses and made them deaf to other stimuli, thus leaving them completely vulnerable.

After ending stocking yourself with the body parts of a member of each tribe you headed towards Karelia.

>Talk with Karelia about the situation.

"Miss Karelia." You said.

"I don't need to read your mind to know what's inside that indecipherable and nightmare inducing mind of yours, Heracor."
>>
>>40305149
>>40305149

She turned around and silently grabbed pieces of each three members that she had tortured and killed.

"This hunt had become way more than a simple sport. We have to go and hunt those Mantle shamans, even possibly capture a couple alive for further study and the discovery of how to fight them better."

You nodded twice, the idea of studying xenos while somewhat taboo wasn't unheard of, specially among the Magos Biologis.

"What should we do?"

"I think we should advance and try to get in contact with the tribesmen of the Sweeping Claws, they obviously pursue some of our same objectives...maybe we could have used the Rockborn as couriers for a more peaceful approach but after out attacks I doubt that's among our possibilities."

She didn't seemed mad, even if one of those attacks was planned by you.

"If you think this is completely out of your reach you can always return with your people..."

That seemed like a half ended phrase, she was offering you the chance to exchange teams and continue with your hunt with your Skitarii, still the way she paraphrased that was pretty fear inducing.

"If both teams traveled together we would be too big I think, I doubt that the Sweeping Claws would accept a meeting if we approach with an army instead of a small group."

>Stay with Karelia and try to discover what's happening. Half of her team seems to be dead and thus the chance of survival is smaller but still this is your duty.
>This is way too much for you, continue with your Skitarius were the your survival chances will be bigger and you will be among yours.
>Select some warriors and generals and secretly inform them of the situation, add them into the team of the Inquisitress to compensate for the casualties so far. This might be the best option but still the Skitarii might get even madder at you since you weren't in their team and now you are removing part of their warriors for your use.

Call off the hunt, get all teams to converge, call in air support, obliterate the Mantle.
It should be fully within inquisitorial rights. If the governess would refuse, accuse her of assisting the kroot with offerings of psykers.

"Karelia would you be within your rights to change the hunt?"

Inform the Skitarii of the situation, but don't drag them into your team. Tell them that Mantle's are a priority and that if they can they should alert the other teams.

>Call off the hunt, get all teams to converge, call in air support, obliterate the Mantle.

"Can we stop the hunt? Maybe even get all teams to converge, call in air support and obliterate the Mantle."

She sighed and looked somewhat defeated, something really strange in such a powerful individual, it could have been from over using her powers thought.

"We would have to meet with Nalasha again, ask for a premature orbital transport and inform of the situation..." She kicked the Chimera enraged but you forget her, she was under a great pressure, silently you asked the machine spirit for forgiveness too.

"The only secure option is total obliteration " She continued. "But with so many warriors and noblemen in there we cannot allow for a premature Exterminatus. This warped System can only export warriors and a few more things and if we kill all the recruits of this year they won't be able to pay the tithe and Charonis will become even more grievous. Even if I dislike Nalasha I feel as if I had provoked many problems and trouble so far. If it weren't for me Mellizune wouldn't have been born, Nalasha wouldn't have sent so many psykers to die and the Mantle would still be unconnected with the Inmaterium."

"Karelia would you be within your rights to change the hunt?"

"Each team has short wave radio to communicate between each other but not to mile wide contact or with the ship on orbit. If we want the teams to leave the planet sooner might status as an Inquisitor might be powerful enough but we still have to inform all the participant teams. Maybe your tech-sorcery might be able to solve this gap, I cannot simply...cannot.

>Inform the Skitarii of the situation, but don't drag them into your team. Tell them that Mantle's are a priority and that if they can they should alert the other teams.

You meet your team, they came peacefully and cheerful wanting to tell and brag with you about their kills and also inform of the casualties so far. Roughly you cut the informant and told her that their mission isn't over and that they still cannot relax. They have new objectives.

Each Kroot is vile and deserves dying but the worst of them are undoubtly the Mantle. They steal tech and might even posses a looted Chimera or two. Their existence doesn't only affront humanity but also the Omnissiah for all the technological sins that they commit with their warped ways. In case you see a Mantler and a member of another tribe always kill first the Mantler. You order them to spread this message as far and loud as they can and soon they are all gathering the looted armors and technology from the Mantle Kroot that lie around.

You join them to cheer their spirits more and as you do you find a couple of Sweeping Claw shapers still alive, they have all or most their limbs, including their wings, broken and crippled. Carefully you grab them and inform Karelia of them, she lets you get them inside the Chimeras for future use.

It ended becoming night sooner than expected and both teams joined together and made a campfire were they shared food and tales together. At first hour in the morning and with the members of your team still half asleep your Skitarii woke up and efficiently headed into the forests of the East into the search of finding more Mantle Kroot.

Fair, thanks for running.
I guess we just need to methodically wipe out all the mantle at this stage.

I have one question for the people that play the tabletop game. Am I making the Kroot way too easy?

I mean, we have been killing them in pretty big quantities so far.
>>
>>40306347
Kroot are pretty easy to kill, they're basically tarpits for the Tau to shoot from behind to avoid melee.

Alright. It is uploaded!
