The heat is oppressive for this early in the year, you think to yourself as you wipe sweat from your brow. You turn your attention away from the waves of greenery outside your window to look at the seat in front of you, like your own, it is covered in a blue colored fiber that is splashed with all kinds of color that reminds you of a pre-schooler’s art project. Like your own, it is probably very uncomfortable for the person sitting in it as they are jostled every so often by the inadequate suspension of your vehicle. And like you, that person is probably sweating heavily on this mid-June ride down the highway to your destination.

You look around at the other occupants of the bus that you share this, oh-so-lovely ride, with the boy with the bearded neck and onyx trench coat, the pale girl with her hair up in a ponytail and a floral shirt that doesn’t fit quite right, and the many others that sit along the aisles. You have something in common, all of you are headed to Fat Camp.

With a sigh you return to looking out the window in time to see a red-tailed hawk flying lazily on the air currents above. A splash of color on the clear blue sky.

You are SAMANTHA SMITH and little do you know that this is both the last, and the first, day of your life.

Your thoughts wander back to your past few years of school, the other girls were never very nice to you, always making fun of you for being chubby. They came up with lame nicknames like Sam-wich, and Samantha the Hutt, and Fat Sammy. And while they were hurtful you found in their jeers and cruelty a source of inspiration for yourself. You had seen the “transformation” videos and “Before-and-After” shots on your social media sites like Facebook and Reddit, and if they could go from being overweight and out of shape so could you! You just needed to be away from all the distractions of suburbia is all.

You look down at yourself, over two hundred pounds of highschooler all wrapped up in an XXL sized dress, but that was going to change over the course of this summer. You are going to come back to school and be the envy of all those bitches! In the meantime, however you decide to pass what will probably be another few hours of bus ride with a distraction you brought from home.

What did you bring?

You go to pull out your 3DS out of your pink backpack that you have nestled on the floor next to you. In actuality, manage to struggle with it for some time, as you attempt to get the DS out of one of the side pockets but the weight of all of your clothes, supplies, and assorted toiletries press against each other. The bus hits another bump and you manage to jerk the DS out of its compartment. Looking at its backside you see the familiar Nintendo3DSXL logo and, flipping the machine around, you open it with a pleasant *click* as the top screen snaps into its resting position. You press the power button and the machine lights up revealing the home screen.

In a moment you are playing Final Fantasy, it isn’t the first time you have beaten the game you downloaded from the Nintendo shop, and this time you have decided to do a solo White Mage run. You know most of the tricks to grinding at this point so the game should keep you entertained for the next few hours till you arrive at the camp.

-----A few hours later----

There is a Flash, the world shakes back and forth with a great rumble, the Kraken shimmers in and out of existence as it is defeated and a familiar victory sound jingles in the background. Another boss defeated, and in record time too. There is a Screech as the bus comes to a halt, it must have arrived at the camp, you look up from your DS and place it back in your bag. You look out to see a wide sprawling campground around you, you can see the woods on the outskirts and a jogging path leading to the nearby hills, dominating the grounds are multiple cabins where you will no doubt be spending the next couple of weeks and a main building that is supposedly filled to the brim with exercise equipment. This place is perfect for someone to turn their life around!

“Alright everybody out.” The gruff voice of the bus driver says in an irritated tone, as a resounding groan comes from about one half of the bus. The other campers gather their belongings and ever so slowly file out of the bus.

When you finally get out you take in a breath of the fresh country air and decide to:

You decide to head over to the meeting area and attend the Initiation ceremony with the other campers, after all, it is your first day of camp and it would be a good idea to learn about how the camp works and to get introduced to the camp counselors.

You follow the rest of the campers as they waddle towards the assembly area, which is a short ways into the campground and consists of log benches in stadium style seating, and is surrounded by trees. Most of the seats have been taken by the time you get there, by other campers who no doubt came on earlier busses, and you have some trouble finding a seat having to climb some of the wooden steps to get to an untaken seat. All this walking has left you a bit out of breath so it is a relief to sit down amongst the masses of sweaty and out of breath campers who make idle chatter to one another around you.

In a few moments you see them, the camp counselors, five incredibly fit members of the human race walking down the path to the assembly. Their toned abdominals visibly on view and glistening with sweat as they come jogging towards center stage. In the lead a woman who appears to be in her late twenties followed by four men of varying ages, they take the stage and the woman takes the mike that has been standing idle there.

>>
>>40331889
“Hello Campers! Are you ready to feel the burn and get in the best shape of your lives?!” she says excitedly. This elicits a mixed response from the crowd as there is some groaning mixed in with idle clapping. The woman takes the mike off its stand and, taking a few steps forward yells into it. “I said… ARE YOU READY TO BE IN THE BEST SHAPE OF YOUR LIVES!?” This second one seems to get a few cheers and more clapping than the first however you know that it is just to prevent her from going on about it. “Well, my name is Amanda and I am head counselor here at Waldon Pond. Like you, I too was once overweight, out of shape, and always running on empty, however thanks to hard work, determination, and a little help from my old Camp counselors, I managed to kick my old habits and now I feel fit-tastic. So it is my pleasure today to welcome all of you here to Waldon Pond and go over the procedures for the camp.”

The other camp counselors introduce themselves as Steve, John, Andrew, and Robert during the ceremony. What follows is a long winded talk of the history of the camp, the transformation stories of the people who have come here before, all interspersed with talk of how campers are expected to exercise so much per day, how outside food and drink is forbidden, and the importance of safety when swimming at the pond which lies behind the exercise facility you saw earlier. Towards the end of the introductory speech they say that the first day of camp is free for campers to wander the grounds or get settled in but today the facility and the pond are closed.

As the Initiation winds down Amanda takes the center stage once again. “And with that Initiation is over, feel free to come talk to us if you have any questions and have a great first day here at Waldon Pond!” she says with a bright and cheery smile. With that many of the other campers begin to rise and shuffle around grumbling under their breath, talking to one another, or just attempting to leave the assembly as quickly as they can.

With the Initation over you have several things you can do:

You decide to go get settled into your cabin, after all you don’t want to have to lug around your backpack the entire day and you would like to meet the people you are going to be spending a good majority of the summer with. There is a billboard off to the side of the assembly where there is listed the various names of the campers and which cabin they are allocated to, of course male and female cabins are separately listed. After a short amount of time searching you manage to find your name listed amongst those on the board. “Smith, Samantha -16 –Cabin B12- Bunk 3” the page reads.

---- A short while later----

You find yourself at the entrance of Cabin B12, it looks decent enough from the outside a plain blue coat of paint on the wooden structure, slightly raised above the ground, with a screen door. You walk up the steps, the third creaking slightly as you put your weight on it, and enter the cabin. Inside you find the place equally as plain as the outside, there is little to no decoration besides the four cots with nightstands. Inside the cabin there is another girl already. She is laying on her bed looking at the ceiling and she is wearing dark clothing that matches her black hair, which has a purple streak in it. She turns slightly to look at you before rolling her eyes, letting out a “huff” and returning to staring at the ceiling.

Well…

You decide that you’d rather not stick around, after all you came here to get to losing weight and sitting around all day in a cabin is counterproductive to that. You head over to the bunk labeled with a 3 and get to unpacking your things. Placing your items in the nightstand next to your bed and your clothes in a trunk you find underneath it. The girl doesn’t seem to bother you as you go about unpacking other than letting out the occasional sigh, and turning over in her bunk. You make sure to place your DS in the nightstand and lock it just in case one of your cabin-mates turns out to be a klepto or something.

It isn’t long before you are back outside, the sun still shining bright, you have the rest of the day to yourself. So now you just need to decide what to do first.

You decide to hit up the jogging trail, after all the facility is closed for the day and the pond won’t have a lifeguard on duty till tomorrow, and besides you already put away your swimsuit and you’d rather not deal with the “queen of sighs” for the rest of today. In short time you make it back to the top of the camp. You are already kind of tired from all the walking back and forth around camp but you are determined that this summer will be one of transformation and as such you make your way to the entrance of the jogging trail.

It’s more of a walk than a jog that you take as you make your way through the woods that surround Waldon Pond. The camp is located pretty deep into the country side so there is plenty of woods to explore on the path, several times you see a butterfly flutter past, or a squirrel cross the path ahead of you before darting into the underbrush. The country air is a nice difference than that of the city that you are accustomed to, it has a clean smell to it, like the pine air fresheners that your mother would sometimes put in the van after getting it cleaned, except less artificial. The path seems to have an incline to it which provides a nice challenge for you as your legs start to feel the burn, you know that you will need to make your way back or go through the entirety of the jogging trail but for now you know that this is the first step on your path to a new you.

---Slightly less than an hour later---

Your lungs feel like they are on fire, there is sweat on your brow and your feet are crying out for rest. The path makes winds further into the hills and before you know it you are strolling along the hillside overlooking Waldon pond, a fine view of the crystal clear waters of the pond and the camp itself. Up ahead you can see a railing along the path. This spot would be a perfect location to look over the campsite and a spot to rest up before continuing on the trail.

You decide to stop and rest, after all it would be a shame to leave to path unfinished and you would hate to have your legs be so tired on your second day that you were unable to check out the exercise facility or the pond itself. You make your way over to the railing panting heavily and lean up against it finally able to catch your breath. As you do so you get a good look at the camp itself.

The camp lies nestled in a valley surrounded by hills and two mountains. It has sprawling acreage on which lies rows upon rows of cabins, the exercise facility itself, several other large buildings probably for the camp administration, and there is the pond itself which is rather large almost being large enough to be called a lake, it glistens in the sunlight. There are the woods that surround the camp that line the sweeping hills the upper branches of the trees rustle in the soft summer wind. In the campgrounds you can see your fellow campers going about their days, like little ants moving about from your perch up in the hills. You breathe in another breath of that fresh mountain air. That’s when you feel something off, like the world is moving ever so slight, the sound of shifting rocks and creaking wood, the feeling of wind on your face…

Suddenly, you find yourself tumbling, falling through space as the world speeds by you, chunks of ground and the railing you were supporting yourself on coming with you as you head towards the ground below. Was it erosion, improper placement of the railing on the side of the hill, or your weight that was the deciding factor? Little of that mattered now. Your life seems to flash before your eyes, years of sitting in a classroom, your mother spending time with you to help you with homework, all the time you spent playing videogames and reading articles on social media, that one time your cousin convinced you to play D&D with him and his friend, the one time you and your parents went to the beach, even the bad times when the bitchy girls bullied you about your weight, when that boy you asked out said yes only to ditch you, the time you broke your leg when you were little and took up spending hours at the computer instead of going outside. If only you could-

There is a sickening crunch as the overweight 16 year old girl slams into the boulder at the bottom of the small cliff headfirst. Her skull is indented and spine broken, indeed she died instantly from the impact. Her body lies strewn on the ground and it will be some time before the camp realizes she has gone missing. In the trees above a red-tailed hawk looks down on the scene, tilting its head in curiosity at the grisly spectacle before once more flapping its wings and taking flight over Waldon Pond.

----Dawn of the First Day----
There is darkness, an ever spanning darkness and a warmth, you feel at peace for what feels like both the briefest moment and a lasting eternity, and then, the moment is lost.

You feel, strange, your body feels contorted, twisted, and cramped. There is a warming comfort all around you yet you feel like you are confined, stuffed into a space far too small for your body, which strangely no longer feels aching. Last you remember you were in freefall from the side of a hill and now? Wait, are you in a coma!? Did you suffer some kind of injury that has left you all kinds of twisted and paralyzed? Are you going to have to spend the rest of your days in a wheelchair!? Your eyes flash open. The world around you is opaque, like seeing the world through a fogged glass lens, you attempt to move to get a better look but your body responds strangely, like your limbs are twisted at odd angles and pressed against you and the world around you. Are you in a coma? Did you have a brain injury? Is this your life now? You feel despair, an ache, everything in your life you had to look forward to, gone in an instant. Unable to become anything, ever. No chance to turn your life around. Doomed to be a fat coma lady for the rest of your days.

>>
>>40334636
Suddenly, you hear a noise, like a flapping of wings. Are you dying? Is an angel coming to take you to heaven? Or is your coma-body being eaten by a turkey buzzard in the woods? Then you hear what sounds like a muffled voice.

“-ove i- -aw -- -ove” A female voice seems to say, muffled by the world around you it is difficult to make out the words. But maybe it is someone come to find you?

No, you can’t just give up! This is your life and you will not going to just give up and let a little fall stop you. You’ve seen the stories of people recovering from all sorts of injuries and living full, eventful lives even after losing the use of their legs. You aren’t dead yet damn it and as long as you are living you aren’t going to give up hope! You struggle against the confines of your prison moving as much as you can. It’s not much, but you feel the ability to move your bent limbs more and more as you struggle back and forth.

“-ovin- -he- -ovin-! –ome –n! –u –n – it!” you hear the feminine voice seem to say from outside the world around you.

Suddenly, your bent foot seems to break through something, and like that, the world around you just got a little bit bigger. You retract your leg, which seems to bend backwards and push forwards again. This time your entire left foot seems to exit your prison and tough something that feels like twigs. You must be in the forest still. You give a push with your right leg and it does the same breaking through your world and back to the twig and… is that feathers? Was a bird actually near you?

>>
>>40335364
You shift more and more, rocking back and forth as you attempt to upright yourself and with a great shake you seem to be up in a sitting position! It’s unbelievable, if you were so badly injured, but perhaps miracles do happen!

“-lo-e, so close. Al---t t—re!” the female voice seems giddy with anticipation like she is experiencing something amazing.

You think you have figured it out, your limbs seem to be responding backwards, like flight controls on a joystick simulator game. With a heavy push you shove the world off your body backing out of your prison and onto the forest floor falling into straw, twigs, and feathers. Your eyes can’t seem to take the sun and you squint in the light, but you did it! You’re alive and O.K., you survived your ordeal and after much physical therapy you are sure to…

Your vision comes back, in front of you, you see a lady, she looks to be about in her early twenties by the look of her, she has a soft loving expression on her face like a mother looking at her child from the way she is looking at you. However, there are two very large differences between her and your average twenty something year old. The first is that she seems to be five times your size, towering over you, and the second is that in place of her arms and legs are what you would expect of a bird. You shake your head. No, that can’t be right, bird people, hah, funny, and look ahead once more. The giant woman is there still, her body is tan with the golden glow of someone who has spent the majority of their life under the sun, with long golden locks cascading down from her head, her face is soft in its features making her look even younger than she does already, she doesn’t have much of a bust, and in place of her two arms are two large wings like that of a bird, their plumage a marbled white in coloration and speckled with blue flecks and hue, from her rather ample posterior there are more feathers forming a tailfan, and below that her legs bend at odd angles and end in talons like that of a hawk. You finish looking the lady over when a searing pain seems to radiate in your mind.

“Welcome, my sweet little one.” The woman coos softly to you as she stretches out her wing to cover you and bring you close to her. “Welcome, to the world.”
At these words the searing pain ends and is replaced with a thought, branded in your mind like a hot iron brands into the flesh of cattle. Mother.

Calling here for tonight, I plan on sticking around for Q&A.

Some birds are known to stagger the laying of a clutch of eggs to make sure they don't all hatch at the same time to make sure in the event of disaster, some of their older young are strong enough to survive, or that so there is something to slightly defend the unhatched eggs in the nest when mama goes to get food.
