Second Verse, Part 9

It is the Year of Our Lord, 1134.

You are Wilhelm, Lord of Ramla.

And you at last bound to return to your lordship. Your men march in double column down the dust swept roads of Jerusalem, your riders guiding the flanks and scouting ahead. It is a disciplined war band that makes its way from Jaffa to Ramla, a road south and into rough frontier country. The landscape of the Holy Land was as dry and uninviting as ever, but you felt within yourself a renewed vigour. Glad to be done with the road, at least for a time, and to concentrate your energies in other directions.

You had new companions, and old ones, to introduce to your lands. Lands that were not yet intimate to you. You hoped in your absence nothing unfortunate had befallen it. There were many dangerous to maintaining lands, particularly so close to the area where the kingdom of Jerusalem and the Caliphate of Egypt met.

With little to occupy your mind save staring out into those long, hard fields, you thought to spend your time in company.

You decided to keep the company of a girl you'd spent little time with, the Irish lass Maggie Ui Harra. She came along on a plodding mule, and looked much surprised when you rode up beside her.

"M'lord," she offered. The girl rode with axe across her lap, and fair skin all but hidden under a linen wrap. The red haired types burned quick under a hot Jerusalem sun, and the girl did much to protect her sensitive skin.

"How have you been this last journey?" you asked, keen to get a read on the Irish lass.

She smiled, green eyes twinkling. "Oh its been a right craic of a time," she said, "Dancin', and travel. Not to mention helpin' deliver a babe. More than I'd ever do cooped up in St Anne's."

You looked the former novice over. She seemed a sturdy young woman, built for rigorous life. A woman like that could do well for herself in a hard land like this. When she turned in her saddle she looked back to the Arab physician Mohmed and belted some Arabic phrase down at him. It seemed to startle the young man, and he shouted something back that made Maggie laugh.

"Doing my best to learn the lingo," she said, "That lad is whip smart, but talks like a half-addled child for all his learning. So I'm doing my best to meet him half way." She kept a broad smile upon herself. Truth was you'd yet to see her in a mood that could be called glum. She kept a cheery air about her that seemed to infect many that kept her company.

"Keen to be home?" you asked.

Her eyes drifted. "Home is green hills cloaked in a low fog, shinnin' with a mornin' dew beneath a grey sky." Then she looked back to you. "But this'll serve as home for now. Truth, I'm keen to see Etain again. The girl is a bit of a waif but good for a yarn." The other Irish lass, left behind to assist Lady Rosalie.

The days seeped by, drawn out by the heat. Until Ramla came into view.

Sentries kept watch, and let up a hail at the sign of your approach.

You kept with your men. As you approached you noted the wall. It was not fixed completely, but work had been put into it. You noted the strangest thing. A pillar as tall as three men. Rounded from the base to the flat top. And sitting at the top was a large black man, a bow across his knee and a handful of arrows in hand. He wore a shirt of maile and a wickedly curved blade at his hip.

As well as a thick beard and hairy grown long and wild.

Solomon of Makuria. He was an intimidating black eagle over looking your approach.

"Here rides Lord Wilhelm, my brother," he called to you, "But what rides beside you other than a rat?" He put arrow to bow string and let fly. The arrow thumped deep into the saddle of Orlando's horse, causing it to buck in fear. Orlando was no less fearful.

If Solomon had meant for that arrow to kill Orlando it would have. And as he strung another arrow, drew it back with an audible tension, you feared the next one would prove fatal.

"Peace!" you called to him.

"I made an oath," he said, "To kill that traitor. Would you make a liar out of me?"

You had heard of this oath and seen the scar upon his forearm. When you thought Orlando lost to you the gesture had touched your heart. Now it sent you to near panic.

"Solomon, please, lower your bow and listen," you said.

He did not lower his bow, nor did he let arrow fly. "Speak, brother," he said.

>>
"Orlando saved me from an assassin's blade, and risked his own in the effort. He has the scar to prove it," you clicked fingers and Orlando took your meaning. He striped to his bare chest, showing the long angular scar that had opened the meat of his chest. "I have forgiven him, and accepted him back into my grace. I ask only that you remember your duty as a Christian. To forgive others their trespasses, and remember that ours is a religion of redemption from sin."

Solomon lowered his bow hesitantly, eyes still full of contempt for Orlando.

He let out a frustrated throaty below.

"Damn my eyes for a Christian man!" he said, and then slipped from his perch. He landed on the ground hard, feet kicking up an explosion of dust. He stood tall, eyes taking in all of you.

And then finally he smiled, displaying his brilliant white teeth.

"Christ knows I've missed you," he said, walking over and pulling you from your horse and into a rough bear hug. You laughed into his chest and then he released you, clapping some of the travel dust from your tabard. Then he reached up, and plucked Chihirizahd from the saddle. Settling her down next to you. "Long have these days felt half empty."

He whistled, and out came the raw recruits you had left him with. Not so raw now. They marched quick. Carried their arms like veterans, and assembled for your inspection.

"I've had not much else to do but be their Satan," he said, gesturing to his men, "And now they are a devil's hell."

You nodded approvingly as one fetched your horse. They looked toughened. You could only guess what harshness Solomon had forced them to endure.

You walked into the township with Solomon, relating to him all your activity. The man listened, giving a nod here and there. At last you came before your tower keep.

"Things have not been so rough here," he said, "We've chased off some trouble makers, blooded the men, but otherwise its been quiet."

Your household staff was waiting for you before the keep. Rosalie and Etain, well groomed and immaculate. Not a hair out of place not a spot of dirt upon them. Rosalie presented to you a couple of velum parchments.

"Your finances are in order," she said, "We have begun rebuilding the walls, we expect it to be finished in only a number of months. Our neighbours have shared with us some grain as a show of good faith, which has done wonders for moral. We still need a replacement priest for the people. I'd suggest sending to Jerusalem for one. We've had two births and a death n your absence. An old woman, nothing unusual."

You look over the parchment. "All seems in order," you said, handing them back. Rosalie smiled and offered you a bow.

You dismiss your companions and soldiers. It is your desire to inspect your town. A lord should be familiar to his subjects. The others, tired from the road, are happy to be allowed to depart. Only Solomon keeps you company as other disappear into the tower.

The two of you walk through the broad lanes of the town, not talking much but enjoying the sound of villagers at work. Some stopped to consider you. Others hailed Solomon with familiarity and affection that he returned. It seemed a peaceful, rested place.

"This is good land," he said, pausing to take a fruit from a stall in exchange for small coins. The vendor smiled, pushed the coins back toward him. "Good people," he said through a mouthful.

A few young women of the town giggled at the sight of Solomon. Some had swollen bellies. No doubt in time there would be a few dark skinned children running around.

A cold drink was brought to you by a dark skinned green eyed girl. She must have been eight or nine.

"My lord," she said in cracked Latin. You took it and drank.

"Eh Xenepha, tell your papa I'll be around tomorrow for that commission," Solomon said, waving the girl off. He pointed to a smithy. "The blacksmith's daughter. His only child, like to learn his trade if he finds no wife to give him sons."

Solomon seemed well ingrained with the rhythm and flow of the town. You owed him a debt for taking such good care of your people.

"Rosalie helped," he said, "The woman has a mind of numbers. Not too good with people, but good at getting things done."

"Good at anything else?" you asked with a sly grin.
>>
Solomon snorted. "She's nose deep in that pale girl most nights. I think she wouldn't care for my company. That pale girl however..." He chuckled. The novice Etain, who he had claimed to be too young. One particularly boring day had led into an interesting afternoon that had changed his opinion on that subject. It seems her education had expanded quickly upon leaving St Anne's walls.

"A keener slut I've never met," Solomon said with a great deal of enthusiasm.

You did a circuit of the village. It brought you back to your fortified keep.

"Well, its good to be home," you said, looking up at the barely familiar white tower. In old times it had been a mosque.

You came into your hall with business on your mind. You had to prepare, and fortify. You had Rosalia summoned to draft a letter.

You worked into the night, drafting letters and arranged to have them sent out on the morrow. An engineer was much needed for the building or war machines. As was a priest for tending to your spiritual needs. Last of all you had need of a second squire to help Hugo with his duties. Rosalie informed you of the sum you would need to pay for all that you wanted and it was no small sum, but you were compensated in spirit when you recalled the promised riches from the lucrative horse trading ring you had joined.

You retired to your study.

For the next two weeks what would you like to do? The day to day running of things was kept well n hand by your staff.

You decide to focus your attention on studying the art of war, which involved two things. One you were good at. Reading the heavy Roman tome, the Strategikon of Kekaumenos. It occupied much of your night. Reading over passages on both formation and training, supply lines and stratagems. You explore its dense passages and with the jhelp of your more experienced companions, piece it all together in your head.

The day is spent in martial drills. Each day a different opponent, overseen by Solomon. Sword alone you face Sabeen, and exchanged blows across the keep yard. Tancred took you for training with the spear. The cross and clack of wood and steel ringing out, punctuated by your curses when the man-at-arms struck a sound blow upon your padded gambeson. He would grin at your mistakes, but then show you how to correct them with careful instruction.

Solomon took time to instruct you on the bow, but he found you a poor student. Nubian men begin training since youth, as young as six years of age, and he was frustrated by how fumble fingered you were with the weapon.

It was taxing work, but you felt your body harden under the rigorous training, and your mind sharpened by study. Afternoons in the shade playing shatranj with one friend or another was a pleasant diversion.

All this time your sister Mathilde set up a nest in a private chamber, and made friends with the women of the hall. She seemed to respect your authority, but made no effort to engage with you. Though you caught her watching you train from a windowsill more than once.

Your studies paid off in time. You soon found yourself more a match for Sabeen's exchanges, guard fast and launching counter attacks she was forced to answer. The woman grunted with effort at your matches now, and ended it panting and covered in a layer of sweat. You could not help but be pleased with yourself, though you were doubly tired. The cooling months of winter's approach had helped, but you still found yourself over heated after hours spent in constant exercise under the heavy padded gambesons you wore for these bouts

The bow you at least managed to achieve what Solomon called a 'novice touch' managing to loose an arrow with a little accuracy over a hundred yards. It was a beginning.

> War +8

One morning, as you stripped your gambeson and washed sweat from your face and chest with a cool rag, a herald arrived. Sabeen had unbuckled the front straps of her own gambeson to reveal her tight black stomach, letting the breeze cool that baked skin as she panted in the shade, sword and shield heavy in her hands. Hugo announced the man as being from Jerusalem.

"Queen Melisende sends word, that she plans to winter in Ramla for Christmas," he said, "She calls upon Lord Ramla to make ready all provisions for a royal entourage."

That surprised you, and sent your village into a frenzy of excitement. A royal visit from the Queen herself, with an extended stay. All knew you were in her good graces. Christmas was not far away. You did not think the Levantines made much hey of Christmas, much like the French themselves, but you were a German. Christmas was important.

She was expected to arrive within the month.

You left the fine detail to Rosalie. Yourself, you had other duties.

You decide your time is best spent with your family. Hugo knew the queen, possibly better than you did, but his manner was rough and only growing rougher. You took him aside at every evening meal to instruct him in conversation and etiquette. You even dragged the pair of them to the hall one day to make sure both knew the proper way to dance at a royal affair.

They were much aggrieved to be forced on one another this way, but they suffered for your benefit and learned quickly.

Hugo at least continued your instruction in private. You saw him once struggled with poetry in an idle afternoon, with Jacques in company keen to mock him. The lad ignored his friend and continued on. You smiled, perhaps he had a troubadour lurking some here in that hard head of his.

Mathilde was consumed with excitement to meet the queen. Tales of her beauty and wit were far reaching, and you worked to temper that enthusiasm. Her cold shoulder warmed as you spent time with her, ensuring she knew the protocols of Jerusalem's court. She was a ready student, and when you were done you were certain her knowledge of customs in the kingdom was a little stronger than your own.

Your men, some were prepared and others were not. It mattered little. Solomon had his men work to build an extention to the barracks to host the Queen's entourage, while Rosalie ordered the best of the region to attend the hall and prepare the queen's chambers.

It was a nervous tight rope you all walked until winter itself was upon you.

The first touch of it barely seemed a winter. You were used to the deep German winter's. The bone shacking and stomach clenching chill. It was cold to be sure, and you went in layers, but you did not see the threat of snow on the horizon.

The herald came again to announce the queen's approach, and you watched from the peak of your tower.
>>
It was not the great being lumbering host you had expected. Surely there were knights and soldiers with her, but you had expected a carnival of nobility. Half the realm in her train. When they came within your walls you though it a small sum for a royal party.

You went to welcome the Queen and her entourage.

Melisende was more beautiful than when you had last seen her. Her skin was clear and expression untroubled and serene. She wore a dress of white cut to cling to her shape and wore a blue shawl about her shoulders. Her honey-blonde hair was worn in thick tied braids that trailed down her back. A silver diadem sat upon her brow. That plump, inviting mouth of hers smiled easily for you.

With her was her near as lovely sister Hodierna. She wore Melisende's colours in reverse, a white shawl and blue dress just as well fitting for her slightly so thicker form.

They had with them no other nobles of merit. A couple of knights of the hospitallers and a nervous eyed middle aged priest. Along side the thirty men-at-arms that guarded their royal person, they had a couple of ladies-in-waiting to attend them.

Neither Iovetta nor Prince Baldwin was with them.

All your household was presented to the Queen, and all bowed in respect.

She smiled for them, raised them with a hand. "Stand tall my friends," she said, "I am honoured to be your guest for this season. Do not feel compelled to bow and scrape to me at every turn. In this place I am but a friend visiting friends. Here to celebrate Christ's birth."

No one seemed to relax at that. She was being nice, but it was only a polite gesture. She was the queen, and would be treated as such.
She turned to you and ran a finger along her chin, considering your more solid frame.

"Lord Ramla," she offered you her hand.

You press your lips against the back of her hand, eyes upon hers. You see those eyes narrow, those lips spread wide in a smile. You squeeze her palm a little before releasing it.

"Why Lord Wilhelm, you are as charming as ever," she said, and her eyes worked your shoulders, "Though different already in some ways. You have been busy."

"Sharpening my skills, honing my body," you said, "Preparing."

"Hnn. Yes, word has reached me of your efforts. Know that we are well pleased with them," she took you by the arm and together you walked into the tower. "Ioveta sends her regards, and a note that I'm not meant to know about. Hodierna has it and will present it in the evening. She remains in Jerusalem, caring for my boy. Baldwin has a slight cough and was not fit to travel."

You come into the hall, carefully decorated in the German style for Christmas. Holly and mistletoe strung from the rafters. She looks about it all coolly, never losing her smile.

"How rustic," she said it with fondness, flicking at a low hanging cluster of mistletoe. "But before I can truly appreciate it, I must retire to my chambers and have a bath. Would you show me to them?"

"You have the use of my chambers," you said, "The most spacious of the keep."

"You are not put out?" she asked. You shook your head as you led her up the winding stairs. "Well, then I graciously accept." She placed a hand over yours.

As you walked she mentioned the visit of the Count of Toulouse. "Arguing my husband's case," she said, "As if I need to hear more demands from Frenchmen besides him. Foreigners, all looking to subvert my authority. It is tiring. They are such bores. My husband remains under house arrest until I say otherwise. No one else." Her expression turned hawkish at the mention of Count Fulk. Then she sighed. "They want me at least to have another child. A boy they hope. If I can provide the French with that, their barking will abate."

You came before the chamber door. "There is private bath within," you said, "Every amenity you could hope for."

Melisende stood with a hand to the door, looking over her shoulder at you.

"I received an interesting letter from my friend Adelheid," she said, "A very enticing letter of great detail." You raised a brow. "Hmm. She seemed much enraptured in her prose. I thought she scribbled to me a fantasy. The strange thing is, your name was mentioned in it."

"And what did she say?" you asked.

Melisende's eyes moved over your frame. "Oh she went into long, hard detail. It's much too much to simply repeat off the cuff from memory. But her words, well, they were quite intoxicating. We all enjoyed it. My sisters and I." She leaned forward, finger tips upon your chest. She leaned up to your ear. "Ioveta keeps it folded beneath her pillow."

And then she drew away with a spirited laugh.

"Now if you will excuse me, I must freshen up," she cracked open the door and slipped in to your chambers. She did not shut it behind her.

>And what will not fucking her bring?
A full day of gossip and a full night of eventual sex.
>>
>>40347564
She knows Wilhelm is cautious, but also he openly flirts with her. I don't think much will come of this, other than her craving for cock growing in intensity.
>>
>>40347624
I think the 99 got in for our engineer, but for squire & priests we may have to pay more or choose between a dud & a stud squire/priest so to speak

>>40347564
Look I'm all for fucking the queen but we need to be smart about who & when we fuck, Aines in the middle of highs castle may have fucked us over but after a few days & more than a few barrels of wine most of her attendants will be lax enough for us to be discreet about it.
>>
>>40347720
The reason why the Queen is travelling so light is obviously because she wants to make sure there is a small as possible chance anyone finding out.
>>
>>40347720
There's no good squire roll. There's excellent rolls for priest and engineer off the bat
>>
>>40347759
Still best not to take chances, the higher we climb the higher our stakes will be and well the queen is pretty high stakes and if there's even a rumour of the queen fucking around with us, the wolves will be upon us and that will not be pleasant for us or the queen.

>>40347779
My mistake then
>>
>>40347836
Anon there are rumors that the Queen has fucked half of Jerusalem. Heck there probably already are rumors that we have fucked her already.
>>
We should trick the queen into anal.
>>
>>40347273
I think maybe Wilhelm just likes having to work towards sex instead of having it handed to him.
>>
>>40347858
Yes but her visit & her favour towards us will work as circumstantial evidence and god forbid a child's conceived before she makes up with Fulk, well our reputation would be unsalvageable amongst the piously minded & the French court maybe others, the fallout would be on a scale we can't yet manage
>>
>>40347720
>but we need to be smart
My priorities are, in order
Socializing
Iovetta's letter
Melisende
>>
>>40347936
Perhaps regardless we need to think with our head before cock because the stakes are to damn high.

>>40347943
Discretion needs to be added to the very top of that list anon
>>
>>40347998
But we could also give Baldwin a half-brother, like a little royal Hugo.
>>
>>40347943
I am pretty sure the Queen has already thought about that. I am certain that the sole reason she is here is to get Wilhelm's child and is using the christmas visit as an excuse to get close to him without it looking supcious.
>>
>>40348150
I know, I just want her to be clean first, because I don't know where she's been, and we're mediciney.
>>
>>40348180
But we could had helped her bathe
>>
>>40348227
And lose all the mystery? For shame, Anon.
>>
>>40348150
Well It would be better to underestimate her than overestimate her at this point as long as we're discreet and cover our end of things, no one could ever claim we'd so much as given her a second glance
>>
>>40348289
Ofcourse we should always strive to be discreet. But i wouldnt worry too much of rumors. Even if anyone tried to start anything with it. It would fail. Only support Fulk has is in France, far away. Almost every lord in Jerusalem is in the Queen's pocket and Fulk himself has literally been grounded by his wife and is not allowed to leave his room
>>
>>40348334
So what you're saying is, we should totally try for a nephew-in-law?
>>
Has anyone archived this thread yet ?
>>
We don't know if she wants a child that badly, but at least one night should make the festivities worth it.
>>
>>40348442
>"They want me at least to have another child. A boy they hope. If I can provide the French with that, their barking will abate."

And she is gonna make it a German child just to spite them.

When faggots started taking things too seriously and decided to kill all fun
>>
>>40349593
Our friend got raped in front of us. We've gotten arrested. We've almost been killed on multiple occasions. We can't dick around much more!

But, the Queen seems like she knows what she's doing. I just hope that what she's doing isn't testing us.
>>
>>40350226
Anon. You are really just now overthinking, jumping to conclusion based on assumptions despite every evidence to the contray. leading to extreme paranoid resulting in in-action
