Let's see, news.

So I'll be going on a bit of a vacation next month, so we won't have a thread the 14th. Might not have one the 21st either, depends on how I feel after the drive. Keep in mind, I do most of the work for a thread over the weekend, and it looks like I'll be spending the majority of the 18th on the road, hahaha. Hard to set up a thread on the interstate!

Raikov 4 is delayed again, sorry about that. Working on a thing for Planefag's KCQ- I think you guys (Those of you that follow it) will like it. at least, I hope so!

Anywhats, archive here:

The blackhawk had landed there in the parking lot to take you, Brigitte, and Katya aboard. Really, it was a pretty impressive showing by the pilot. The lot's got powerlines on two sides and a building to the front- not much room to work.

The guys aboard- you're not honestly sure who they are- shot you a confused look when you'd climbed aboard with Brigitte, though they'd seemed to recognize her, and apparently didn't want to question her about who she was bringing with her. Of course, you're pretty sure your navy whites gave it away. They'd handed you a vest, one of the heavy, armored plate carriers, and you'd slipped it on, taking off your jacket and figuring that was another couple hundred dollars pissed away. Dress uniforms aren't cheap.

You'd been about to lift when Katya had climbed on, the look in her eyes severe enough that no one argued. She'd looked at you once, then held out her hand. You didn't even have to ask- you handed over your rifle and vest without a word, watching as she slipped into it without a problem in the cramped confines of the helo's bay.

You'd pulled on a headset given to you by the chopper's crew chief- Katya and Brigitte had migrated to near one of the doors, and sat with their heads together, probably discussing working together. While you doubt that's really necessary- Anya is alone and probably not armed- it's not really your business. You're a pilot, you remind yourself. Not a commando.

The chopper pilot lifts off, tilting his bird back to get away from the parking lot while gaining altitude.

"How ya be wantin to play dis, baron?" Brigitte asks over the intercom, her voice carrying none of it's usual playful tones. It's all business right now. "De Berlin police, dey be followin dem, oui. She be makin straight for de embassy, cuttin trough de back alleys."

"What happens if they get there?" You ask. She shakes her head and shrugs.

"No tellin. It probably depend on what dat Anya, what she be tellin dem. De Swiss, dey be givin asylum first, den reviewing de case, dey may let her hole up in dere wid the girls while dey try ta figure out what ta do. If dey see de implants... " She shrugs again. "No tellin."

"I adopted them!" You respond. "There's no way-"

She shrugs. "Dat don mean nuttin to dem. If dey tink de girls, dat dey been mistreated, dey be hangin onto dem, mebby tryin ta hand dem off to deir own witches. Mebby try and bring it up to de UN dat dese girls been had tings done ta dem."

"How long?" You ask. She shakes her head again.

"No tellin. Weeks, at least, while de politicians, dey be gettin ta work. Months, mebby. Years. If it be comin to a case, it probably be gettin ugly, regardless o who deir father be. And you can bet de Soviets, dey no be sittin down eider, dey be wantin dem girls back oui."

"No way that's going to happen." You say, flatly.

>>
Brigitte nods. "If it look like it come ta dat, I'm sure we be handlin it. But don't you worry none bout dat, maybe we can head the whole ting off. Dey on foot, dey ain't gonna be outrunning us, non."

"The problem is they can cut through buildings and make it hard to track them." Katya says. "The girls will not try to resist, they were taught not to. They were too small, too young to try. But Anya will not hurt them I do not think."

"You don't think?" You ask, trying to keep the snarl out of your voice. "If she does, she's dead."

Katya pauses, looking back at you. "I do not think she will. I believe she thinks she is acting to protect them."

"De real problem be de KGB resident in de embassy." Brigitte says. "No doubt he be knowin dey in de city, if dey get dere, we could be havin a problem wid him, oui."

"So what's our options?" You ask.

"We can try and trail dem to an open spot den catch dem dere. A road or someting." Brigitte says. "Dere's a few places along de way dey can't hide, bridges and de like."

"And the other option?" You ask.

"We catch dem out in de open near de embassy. Dere be a park around it, and dey can't be duckin into any of de German government buildings, non. If we do dat, we mebby be runnin into trouble wid de Swiss embassy personnel, though. Dey mebby tink dey needin ta get involved."

[x] We don't want to involve the Swiss at all, let's try and intercept them in the city.

"We probably don't want to involve the swiss at all, do we?" You ask. Brigitte shakes her head in response. "Then let's try and intercept them in the city."

She nods. "Dat probably be de bes option, oui. De police, dey be settin up near de embassy, but dat's no sure ting."

"Why not?" You ask. "Is it that hard to stop a teenager with two girls?"

"She a witch, baron." Brigitte reminds you. "An one dat don nobody really be knowin what she can do. De police be axin for help from de Wehrmacht witches, but dat take time ta be settin up."

"So what you're saying is if we miss her in town, she might make the Embassy?" You ask. Brigitte nods.

"Oui. But we maybe able ta head dat off before it become a problem." She says.

You lapse into silence as the blackhawk thuds through the sky over the city, hammering towards the river.

The Berlin Police have their own chopper up, orbiting over a general area. Directing, you imagine, the guys on the ground.

"They in dis area." Brigitte says, looking across the helo to the bridges nearby. "De bridges both be closed to traffic, oui, but dat don't mean she might not be makin a break fo it."

"Think they'd make it if they do?" You ask. Brigitte shrugs.

"So what's our options?" You ask.

"If they get past you down there-"

"Dey as good as in de embassy." Brigitte warns. "We search, we might fin dem befoah anyting happen bad, oui. We set up on de bridge, we make sure dey do no be gettin ta de embassy, but dat Anya, maybe she get desperate, someting happen dere."

"What do you think?" You ask. She shrugs.

"Six o one, half dozen o de udda. Eider way dere be risks."

Splitting your resources is foolish, setting up at bridge isn't a 100% shot at getting her, and leaving the bridge to the cops is leaving an opening she can get through. There isn't really any good choices, I'd say send Katya and Brigitte to search and we set up at the bridge at least to buy time.

[x] See if they'll split up, try to cover all the bases.

"What about you two splitting up?" You ask. "I'll stand on the bridge with Katya, you see if you can't find them."

Brigitte considers this for a moment, then nods. "It be a risk, but it maybe work, oui. Jus remembah, I don be havin strikers, no. If ya be seein dem at de bridge, and I don't be nearby, it be taking me time ta be gettin dere."

You nod, understanding- if Anya ends up being more than Katya can handle, you might be in trouble.

"We be tryin it your way den." Brigitte says, nodding. "Set me down over dere." She points at an open, grassy area nearby- a park, by the looks of it.

After she drops off, your pilot lifts you over to the bridge, taking back off when you and Katya get off the bird. You're met on the ground by a redheaded witch- she looks vaguely familiar. "You're Bishop?" She asks, in accented English.

You nod.

"Good. Name's Young. Just got here, they rushed me over here from visitng my folks. Not real happy about that. What happened?"

You give her the version of events as you understand them, and she nods. "Figures. Alright, look. I'm used to frontline shit, so this kinda thing-" She shrugs. "It's not my deal. I'll hang back and support you if she shows up, but don't expect any superwoman bullshit out of me, ok? I'm a tanker, I kill shit."

1/2
>>
It's tense enough, just waiting. that blackhawk hammers overhead every few minutes, maintaining a wide orbit. Without a radio you can't follow along with the searchers, though Young positions herself nearby and gives you occasional updates.

The time seems to stretch into hours, though your watch shows it's only been ten minutes, when you get a nudge from the armored tankwitch next to you. "Hey." She says, scanning something with her rifle optic. "That look like them?"

You look around, only just barely able to catch what she's talking about without any kind of optics of your own. Three smaller figures, walking purposefully toward the bridge, like they belong there. "Maybe." You say. "Lemme see your rifle."

They all freeze as they see the police barricade on your side of the bridge- but you get a good look at Anya, clutching Stasya's hand. Lilya follows along dutifully, probably unable to leave her sister. Makes sense- Stasya's always seemed to be the more assertive of the two, most likley to make a break for it and require Anya to do something stupid. Neither of them look happy, though neither of them show signs of panic.

"Yeah, that's them." You say to the tankwitch, handing her back her rifle as Anya hurriedly changes directions, striding away from the bridge.

"Shit." Young says, flexing her knees, her strikers starting up with a whine and the appearance of a magic circle beneath them on the concrete. "She gets them into the city this is gonna be a bitch and a half. Want me to go after them?"

Because she was stupid enough to kidnap said girls.

What about the girls shooting down the shark twins? Should we have killed them for it or for shooting at Slider and Ice?
>>
>>40355207
We DID give Anya chance though. Multiple times.
>>
>>40355182
From what she has observed we have brainwashed the girls. and this was one of the main reasons for her kidnap. Misinformation is not a reason to kill someone. Did we kill those two IJA solders who still thought that WW2 was still on? No, we convinced them that the war was over and that they should return home.

Frank literal killed him self to save his future daughters when he was flying over Crete

We did. We were there, Anya said she wanted to talk to the sisters, we said okay. There's the chance. Then she kidnapped them and is trying to take them away from us.

Katya's a pilot, not a CQC specialist. And anyone can be knocked out by a chair to the head.

And besides, why would she risk her place in the USN over not getting any sex?

That line of thinking only make them say you are giving her chance only because you want to daughtered her/Anya
>>
>>40355533
No? That's what I'm accusing the other guy of. I'm saying Frank hands out the borderline-suicidal generosity fairly equally.

It's my educated guess that either the other people in the building didn't know she was escaping. Or that she used the girls as human shields to block any shots against her.

[x] Follow them, Brigitte has a radio, call her in before you make a move!

You nod. "Go after 'em, but call Brigitte in before you make a move!" You say. "We'll be right behind you."

"Pfft, yeah, right. 'K, watch my tracks!" She says, kneeling down a bit before she accelerates off, her strikers making her look for all the world like she's ice skating.

On concrete.

Anya, for her part, tries to take off with the girls- who pick that moment to start resisting. They were probably trained to not waste effort, you think, as she attempts to drag the now-uncooperative form of Stasya by the wrist while Lilya is holding her other arm back and digging her heels in.

It's a sign that Young can't wait- Stasya and Lilya have forced the issue. You're probably just as surprised as anyone else when Brigitte comes barreling out of a building nearby, arrowing straight for Anya.

Anya, for her part, gives up. You can see all the fight go right out of her as her arms go slack and she sinks to the concrete, though from here you can't hear the first plantitive sobs starting to well up from her. The girls- your girls- make a beeline straight for you, both of them starting to cry themselves as they wrap their arms around you in hugs. It's not the most emotion you've ever seen out of them- they cried after Crete, too- but's it's still a sign of just how far they've come since then.

1/2
>>
Brigitte keeps one eye on them and one eye on Anya, though it looks like the witch isn't planning anything.

You have to give the girls a minute to calm down- fortunately, that's one thing they've always done quickly. "Are you two ok? what happened?" You ask.

Stasya shakes her head. "She was fast. Faster than Katnyan was ready for."

"We're sorry, papa." Lilya adds. "We should have warned her. Anya was trained better than we were. They trusted her more."

Anya, overhearing, sniffs. "T-That's not true." She says, her voice wavering. "T-The colonel w-wanted 'another pet' h-he said. H-he only trained me like this b-because he wanted t-to." She starts crying again.

Both the girls look at you. "Papa, what are you going to do to her?" Stasya asks.

"Please don't hurt her papa." Lilya begs. "She wasn't trying to hurt us!"

>>40356187
To lilya: Of course not, afterall, she's misinformed.
To Anya: I feel like I should explain some things to you. I never did anything to the girls to harm them. All I did was give the girls a choice. From the clothes on their backs to the choice to continue fighting. They have been allowed to choose their future at every step of the way.

We both want the same thing, for Statsya and Lilya to be happy and to grow up with a family. So why risk their safety by returning them to Russia? The girls have enjoyed the freedom they have been given thus-far. so why not join them? Why not have a nice family that will care for you and let you have the choice that the Russians denied you. I promise you that you will be safe from any plot to try and harm you or the girls. Why not join us and live the happy life that the soviets denied you?

And I promise you, This "Colonel" will suffer for what he has done to you.

Anya really cares for the girls, shes not just following orders to bring them back. You sigh and shake your head. "I'm not going to hurt her, Lilya. It's clear she wasn't trying to hurt you, with how she just gave up like that." You say, noting the serious look she's managed to put on. She nods once when you say it, a combination of her expecting as much and her agreeing with it.

Still, something has to be done about Anya. You're more careful to not approach past Brigitte as you close in on the crying witch. "Anya?" You prompt. "Anya, are you listening to me?" She nods, keeping her face in her hands.

"Anya, you and I want the same things." You say, squatting down to her eye level. "Anya. Look at me."

She sniffs, and slowly, tentatively, raises her eyes to look at you.

"I have never- could never- harm Stasya or Lilya. They are my daughters. Everything I have ever done, I have tried to give them a choice, from the clothes they wear to their decision to keep fighting."

She sniffs and nods.

"They've been allowed to choose their future at every step." You continue. "And it's clear you and I, we want the same things for them. We want them to be safe and happy and protected, right?"

She nods.

"And we both know what would happen if they were returned to Russia."

"Baron, dis ain't really de place." Brigitte warns, as the police cordon off the street. "Mebby we be needin ta get in off de road?"

You nod. "Yeah, let's go. Anya?"

She doesn't even stir, still crying.

Brigitte looks over at you, then down at the crying witch. "Ya know, sometime I be jealous o dat title you got, defender o witches." She says, then smirks. "An sometime, not so much. Dis be one of the second ones."

"Gee thanks, Brigitte." You say. "She clean?"

Given how damaged she is? Better to just remove the VDNI if we can, or replace it with our version for health reasons, and make sure she gets a fuckton of deprogramming therapy (and regular therapy) before she goes anywhere near a cockpit again. If she even ever wants to again.

Yes, and besides, the soviet implant is incompatible with our VDNI interfaces anyway, so if she wanted to fly immediately then she would have to fly manually.

[x] You know if you're wrong I'm going to haunt you, right?

"You know if you're wrong I'm going to haunt you, right?" You ask, approaching Anya slowly.

Brigitte nods, laughing lightly. "It be ok, if I be wrong, I tink ya got enough people willin ta drag ya back dat I don't need ta be worrying non."

You let the statement go, leaning forward. "Anya? We need to get off the street, ok?"

No response from the witch.

You sigh and scoop one arm under her knees, the other going across her back as you lift her off the street- like Stasya and Lilya, she's lighter than you'd have figured. She leans into the carry, still crying, her face now pressed against your ribs. At least it's your good side, you think.

Brigitte guides you back to an area large enough for the blackhawk to set down- and steps aboard, motioning for you to follow. You do so, taking a seat on the metal deck and slipping on a headset someone hands to you.

"Where we headed?" You ask as the chopper lifts.

"Planterwald." Brigitte responds, her accent again clashing with the German word. "De Coven maintains a hold dere on de river."

"You're kidding. I thought I said-"

"Dat's befoah Anya done made a scene like dat. Like as not, people saw it." Brigitte says. "An de coven heah, dey be respectin de title o Guardian a lot moah dan uddah people might."

"And what about Anya?" You ask, adjusting your seat as the girls both join you, one sitting on either side. Lilya leans in and, despite the awkward angle, hugs Anya.

Brigitte shrugs. "It be clear she be a bit moah dan jus anotha POW. You ax me, she be a problem for you, but maybe dat just because I be likin ta see ya squirm sometime, oui?"

"Oh gee thanks." You fire back.

>>
>>40358117
Yep. Trauma, ho.

I fear for her purity.
>>
>>40358119
You never did.
>>
Brigitte laughs. "Yah wouldn't be pushin no limits tellin de allies dis witch, she been abused bad, an as a guardian, it be your duty ta be findin out how and tryin to hep her get bettah. Don't tink we be gettin much intel outta her noways."

"You mean adopting her like I did Stasya and Lilya." you state.

She shakes her head. "Mebby not dat far, not unless ya be feelin ya need ta. But you allowed to keep wards too, ones dat don't havin ta be callin ya Papa." She grins. "An I don't tink she's goin ta take being separated well."

"Yeah, I kinda got that impression too." You say, watching the Witch hold crawl into view.

The pilot sets down on the grass helipad easily, lifting back off as soon as you've disembarked with Brigitte, Katya, and the girls. Anya still hasn't let go- you're still carrying her.

You're greeted by a matron, her dark hair shot through with gray, and a small entourage of witches. The matron London stands back in the doorway of the holding, her ever-present small white porcelain cup of tea clashing with her DPM uniform, the marks of a, air marshal on the blouse. She eyes you with a faint smile tugging about the corners of her mouth.

"Sir Bishop." She says from the steps as you exchange greetings with the German Matron and promptly forget her name. Barkhorn? something like that. She'd said she was on her way somewhere anyway, and hitched a ride back out on the Blackhawk.

"I see you've found our wayward witch again." She says, holding the door open for you.

"As is my duty as guardian to protect a wayward witch, and my duty as a father to protect my girls." You respond.

She gives a tight nod, a single jerk of the head, really. "Well said, sir Bishop. Well said. We have some apartments set aside for you here, if you'll follow me please."

"How long is my stay going to be?" You ask- you'd only planned for a few days, if that. The way she phrased the thing about the apartments....

"Oh, not long." She says, happily. "Your admiral has agreed to let your squadron cycle to the rear for a rest and refit period, should circumstances allow it."

"The... rear?" You ask, surprised by the suddenness of it.

She nods. "London, in your case. RAF Northholt. Of course, given your status, as well as that of Miss Kazinski, you'll be expected to stay in your rooms at St. Johns lodge."

You laugh. "I guess I don't get much say in that?"

"Not at all!" She responds, cheerfully. "Ah, here." She says, stopping in front of some doors. "We'll be along shortly to discuss your most recent charge."

"All due respek, matron," Brigitte says. "De Baron, he not be notifyin anyone if he goan accept her as a ward or non. I be happy ta do dat, not be de firs time he be misusin my talents, but I goan wan to hear it from him first."

The matron nods. "Ah, I misspoke, my apologies. Sir Bishop, do you intend to take her as a ward?"

Aware of Stasya, Lilya, and Katya's eyes on you, you take a second before responding, slowly nodding. "Until better circumstances for her present themselves, I take Anya as a ward." You say.

Brigitte and the Matron don't react, Katya smiles a bit, and Stasya and Lilya look at each other- then at you, the barest hint of smiles tugging at the corners of their mouths.

"Ah, dat settles dat, den. Baron if ya havin no further need of little ol Brigitte, she be goin to take care o all de paper work. Maybe we be seein each othah later, maybe not." Brigitte says. "And tanks for de weapon. Always wanted one like dis, oui."

She heads out without another word, letting the wood door click shut behind her.

The matron London watches her go, a curious look in her eye. "Odd lot, those witches from Louisiana."

"Are they all like that?" You ask.

She laughs lightly. "All of the ones I've ever met, yes. I don't want to disturb you too long, sir Bishop, I would have just been leaving to visit some RAF witches in the hospital here, but I did want to stop by and tell you that you needn't worry about anyone attempting to impose on you here."

1/2
>>
"Impose?" You ask, taking a seat on the couch. You thought Anya was asleep, for as little as she's moved since you arrived, but when you went to set her down, she clung tightly to you, refusing to let you.

The Matron, if she noticed, didn't say anything. "Indeed. It's the feeling here that, while your two adopted daughters, and your new ward, are all very interesting to the covens of Europe, You are a guardian. We've agreed that, as much as we should like to talk with them, we will abide by your decisions."

"So come get you when they're ready to talk with the Matrons?" You ask.

She nods. "Precisely. Now, I'm afraid I really must be going. You'll find the house staff mostly speak English, dinner will be served at six- eighteen, if I'm to remember correctly. The Germans don't keep a matron of the house as we do, I believe the eldest witch takes the honor. Right now, the eldest daughter of the Young clan is in residence, so the house is hers."

"There seem to be an awful lot of them." You say, half under your breath.

"Twelve, I believe it is." The matron responds. She smiles when you look up at her, shocked. "Perhaps thirteen, I can't quite recall. However, sir bishop, i really must be going. I shall see you if you're sent to London."

And with that she's gone, leaving you alone with the girls and Katya, who takes the seat next to you.

The two of you sit there for a moment while the girls make a round through the apartments, finally satisfying themselves in learning the rooms and sitting down with you, crowding the couch.

Finally, you decide it's too quiet. "Sooooo" you say, looking over at Katya. "Katnyan?"

You can't say you've ever really seen her blush up till now. It's actually kind of cute.

Katnyan. You'll have to remember that.
