It's the end of the 19th century. Paris has recovered from the Franco-Prussian war and entered a new golden age that would later become known as the Belle Époque. Many of the worlds greatest artists and scientists flock to the City of Lights, rapid advances in technology make life a bit easier and the Third Republic guarantees universal male suffrage.

You are Louise du Petit-Thouars, the youngest daughter of a landowner in the Bordeaux region. Not only did your family have a history of nobility, but they also produced some of the finest wines in the country. As a result, you had access to almost everything a girl could want. Fate had it that you grew fascinated with what you couldn't do and couldn't have. You were quite a delinquent child and very much one of the boys. You ended up in fights and got up to mischief with your older brothers, but what you loved most of all was the thrill of theft. You saw it as a challenge. Because of that, you only ever stole from those who could miss it.

Now that you're 25, you've moved out to your own modest villa on the outskirts of Paris under the pretense of completing your studies and finding an eligible man. With nobody to share your residence with other than your faithful butler Philippe, you have a place to safely store your conquests.

Enjoying a light breakfast, you browse through various newspapers: the most popular French journals and a few foreign ones as well. With a pencil in hand, you look for headlines describing something worth stealing. Your eye falls on the headline...

Some rules and other affairs of note:
>Louise is an educated woman, and therefore assumed to be fluent in French, Spanish, Italian, English and German
>Louise is affluent, it is assumed that she can afford most services and purchases
>The campaign is semi-historical: the campaign will take place somewhere between 1880 and 1900, but some minor facts or persons may be changed
>Automobiles exist, but are not widely available. Louise does not possess one.

>When a roll is required, the best roll of the first three will be picked
>Rolling a 20 means automatic success, rolling a 1 means automatic failure. They do not cancel each other out
>The standard DC for the theft of a prominent treasure is 20, this means that only a natural 20 will result in a successful theft
>There are many factors that can increase or decrease the DC for a theft, a non-exclusive list will follow

Bonuses:
>Familiarity with or blueprints of the location (-2 DC)
>Gained the trust of a minor key figure such as a guard (-2 DC) or a major key figure such as the captain of the guard or the victim himself (-4 DC) (Non-cumulative)
>The theft is committed while the treasure to be stolen is being transported (-2 DC)
>The theft is committed while the treasure to be stolen is outside of Europe * (-2 DC)

Penalties:
>A major key figure knows Louise and has reason to suspect or dislike her (+4 DC)
>The treasure to be stolen has been stored in a vault, safe or other such secure location (+2 DC)
>The treasure cannot be carried away inconspicuously and no appropriate measures to transport the treasure to a safe place have been taken (+2 DC)

*Colonial and indigenous authorities are presumed to be less motivated and easier to bribe

Your eye is instantly drawn to the headline about the Sultans treasure. It is a long and wordy article describing relationships between the French Republic and Sultanate of Morocco. It turns out that the French and German governments are both competing for the rights to establish a protectorate in the region. As a sign of goodwill towards the French, the Sultan has sent some gifts to the president of France.

>The gift is reported to consist of various oriental tapestries and many necklaces and bracelets of gold, jade and ruby. Later today the gift will be transported to Paris by train, passing through Orléans. President Grévy will recieve the treasures from the Sultans representatives during a grand ceremony at the Place de la République.

>Jules Grevy: "This marvelous gift does not belong to me alone, but to all of France. As such, I will ensure that this gift will be displayed in the Louvre for all to see."

The article goes on to describe some more political details, but you merely skim over those. You know what the treasure consists of, and you know where it will be. As you take another sip of your tea, you start overthinking the situation. You could probably make it to Orléans before the treasure gets there. Perhaps you could board the train and steal the treasure before it gets to Paris? Perhaps you could try to steal it during or after the ceremony. Or maybe you should just wait until it's stored in the Louvre and take your time planning your theft? Decisions decisions.

You take a moment to plan everything out as you finish your breakfast. 'Getting the treasure out of there before anyone notices is what I should aim for.' you think to yourself. 'Those jewels sound like they'd fit in a large purse. Those tapestries could be a problem...'

Philippe starts cleaning up the table. "Something on your mind, madame?"

You point at the newspaper. "The Sultans treasure, we're stealing it. I'll get aboard the train in Orléans, steal the treasure and get out before anyone notices the treasure's gone."

Philippe nods. This is why you like him so much, he never protests and you can trust him to keep his mouth shut. "Anything I can do to help, madame?"

>Stay here and take care of the house, I'll only steal what fits in my purse

"Yes, prepare a horse and carriage, maybe a fitting disguise too. Wait on the outskirts of Orléans and shadow the train after it leaves. You're my ticket out of there."

Philippe nods and goes off to prepare. You grab your purse, strap a revolver to your right thigh and a small dagger to your left. You hope you can get in and out unnoticed, but it helps to be prepared.

You take the train and arrive at the Gare des Aubrais, the largest train station of Orléans. There you wait for the right train in the direction of Paris. You grab a novel out of your purse and start reading it as to not draw too much attention. In the passing few hours you see some trains heading towards Paris, but they all have passenger wagons. They're not the trains you're looking for. You start worrying whether or not you've already missed the right train. Luckily, your fears prove to be false: a train arrives at the station. All wagons are passenger wagons, save for the one at the very back. You enter the second last wagon, or the last passengers wagon of the train.

Not much later, the train departs, on its way to Paris. As the machine accelerates, you look around to see who else is present in the wagon. You only see two men wearing turbans and bright, exotic clothes. You presume these three are the representatives of the Sultan. Across them are two Frenchmen in expensive looking suits, probably representatives of the French government. In the back, a French soldier guards the entrance to the last wagon.

>Get out your gun, start shooting

>>
This is a though situation you've found yourself in. One way or another, you either need to get to the last wagon or give up. You take a moment to collect yourself. You look over at the four representatives and notice that they're deeply engrossed in a discussion about what accomodations the Moroccan representatives will enjoy after the ceremony. It seems the two African men are not pleased with what's arranged for them and demand something better by virtue of being the Sultans handpicked men. You pass by them unnoticed.

That only leaves the lone guard. He's armed with a rifle with a bayonet, and a long sabre hangs from his side. You doubt that you'd be able to take him out. However, you do know that you're generally considered to be quite an attractive woman, perhaps you can use that to your advantage.

You nonchalantly approach the guard and seductively whisper in his ear. "Oh sir, I'm so lost and so lonely. If only you could take a moment to... comfort me."

The soldier looks over at the four arguing representatives and decides that it's safe. He guides you to the last wagon. Inside you can see four rolled up tapestries and a small, black box that presumably contains the jewels. You don't have a lot of time to admire them as the soldier forces you against the wal and starts feeling you up. He starts groping your breasts. "You're a naughty little thing, aren't you?" He kisses your neck and sucks the skin softly. "I bet you were soaking wet the moment you saw me. You're one of those rich girls, aren't you? Horny as fuck whenever daddy isn't looking?"

This pervert disguss you. You were willing to play along, but no longer than is needed. You lift your right hand, index finger and middle finger extended, and gouge the guards eyes. He stumbles back with a loud yell and you punch him in the face, hoping to knock him out. It fails miserably, and only seems to make him angrier. "You little whore!" He pounces on top of you and starts tearing up your dress. Not much later, he spots the weapons you had hidden. "You thieving little slut! You were trying to kill me, weren't you? I'll show you, you fucking whore!"

As he starts tearing off your panties, you hear a familliar voice shouting, barely audible over the sound of the train. "Madame? Madame, are you okay?!" You try to shout a response, but the soldier covers your mouth with his hand.

"Nobody is coming to save you."

You think all hope is lost when an unlikely savior appears. Behind you, you can see Philippe entering the wagon. He's brandishing a wooden plank as an improvised weapon and is sneaking towards the man on top of you. Salvation seems real, until the soldier notices you staring at a figure behind him. He turns around and draws his sword, slashing and thrusting at your butler. This untrained man barely manages to deflect the blows with a less than stellar "weapon".

You quickly regain your footing and hurry over to your revolver. You try to aim at the soldier, but his duel with Philippe is so chaotic that you can't get a good aim. When a particularly strong blow of the soldiers sword slices Philippe's plank in half, you panic. Just about the soldier is about to finish him ove, you run against Phillippe and force both of you outside of the wagon and out of the train.

The two of you make a relatively safe but somewhat painful landing on the soft grass surrounding the railroad tracks. After catching his breath, your butler concerns himself with your safety. "Madame, are you alright? Did he.. d-did he ...defile you?"

You try your best to cover yourself up, but with your tattered clothes you can't help but expose yourself a bit. "No, I'm fine. You were there just in time."

Philippe helps you regain your footing. "The cart isn't far from here. I have some more proper clothes for you, if you wish." That Philippe, he always thinks of everything. It's moments like these that make you realize you couldn't have wished for a better help.

As you change your clothes, Philippe proposes something. "It may not be too late. If we hurry, we could disguise ourselves at home and interrupt the ceremony. Or we could always wait until the gifts are stored in the Louvre, take some time to plan our next moves."

What happened just moments ago has shocked you greatly. You don't even dare to think about what would've happened, hadn't your loyal butler shown up in time. Another attempt at stealing the same treasure is just too much for one day. You shake your head. "No, Philippe. We can steal the Sultans treasure some other day. "

The ride back home is an awkward one, marked by complete silence. You lean your head against Philippe's shoulder, he flinches as this happens but doesn't make any attempts to resist. After what feels like an eternity, you break the silence. "Philippe, do you think that guy will tell on us? He knows our faces."

Your butler takes a moment to think before replying. "I highly doubt it, madame. Telling what happened would mean admitting what he was doing back there. The treasure wasn't stolen either, so he'll probably pretend nothing happened for his own safety."

It's early evening by the time you get home. Your butler starts preparing dinner as you read the evening newspaper. The big headline is about the ceremony where president Grévy accepted the Sultans gift. There is an elaborate and verbose description of the ceremony, followed by some commentary from the Minister of War and the Minister of Colonies. Both seem enthusiastic about the prospects of peacefully bringing Morocco under French rule.

Dinner that evening is nothing fancy, just a tasty and hearty broth with some bread on the side. You think you're ready to plan your next move.

"What happened today won't happen again!" you want to be better prepared next time, as not to put yourself and your butler in needless danger. "this time, we'll have a plan. We need to know everything about the Louvre. We need to learn whose in charge and get on his good side. We need floor plans, guard schedules, access points, we need a getaway plan, we need everything! Not a single thing can go wrong!"

Surprised by your determination, Philippe needs a moment to digest all of this. "May I suggest a visit to the City Hall, madame? Information like who is the current director of the Louvre or their floor plans should be readily available to the public. We won't know anything about their access points, guard schedules and other such things though."

"We'll split the tasks. Tomorrow morning, you're going to the City Hall. Figure out who's in charge and get us a floor plan. In the meantime I'll go th the Louvre to figure out where the treasure is and observe the staff. I need to see where they spend their free time among others." Philippe nods.

The next morning you eat a hurried breakfast and get out the door. Philippe had already left when you were awake, presumably for the City Hall. You make your way to the Louvre.

This old museum is already pretty busy despite the fact that it's still early. Presumably a lot of people want to see the Sultan's treasure. Good, that means you won't stand out. You follow the masses and quickly discover where the Sultans treasure is: it's has become the centerpiece of the "Islamic arts" section, in the basement of the Richelieu wing. Many visitors huddle together to get a small glimpse of the the pieces of the treasure. The gifted jewels are proudly displayed in the middle of the room, protected by glass casing, and the four tapestries decorate the walls. You are enthralled by their beauty, and excited by the possibility that they could one day be yours.

After that, you move on to the other parts of the museum. You pretend to have a look at all the other artpieces in the Louvre, but you're mostly there to observe and overhear the guards. You hear that the night watch is relieved by the morning watch at 6 am, and that they in turn are relieved by the day watch at noon. You also hear of an evening group and a night group and deduce that their shifts are probably from noon to 6 pm, and from 6 pm until midnight. As for their free time, you overhear two guards deciding to have lunch at a nearby bistro when their shift is over.

A bit after noon, you head home. Philippe waits for you in the dining room, with a sheet of paper with a handdrawn floor plan. "I wasn't allowed to take one home, so I made a sketch of it. I hope that's sufficient.

"I also learned the identity of the current director. It's a man called Denis Dupré, a former lawyer who lives in Neuilly-sur-Seine."

"You did well, Philippe. Spend the rest of the day however you see fit, I'll try to get some more information." You change out of your dress and find something more suitable for your purposes: you don't want to look too rich, but you don't want to look poor. You want to appear seductive without being sleazy. After some trial and error, you find an outfit that seems good enough for your purposes and head for the bistro you heard the guards mention earlier.

By the time you get there, it's a bit after 6pm. You can already see a few guards enjoying meals and drinks at their tables. You spot two guards sitting at a table a bit away from the other guards and decide to join them. "Gentlemen, mind it if I join you for the evening?" you ask in the most seductive way you can. These two men appear unwilling to turn down such an innocent request from such a beautiful woman.

The evening starts out with some small talk and before long the wine flows richly. You try to drink with moderation, but the two guards are on the verge of drunkness, and as a result very open to suggestion.

Remember, it's not rape if you shout surprise.

If we don't know ask them what their job is and try to lead the conversation towards Dupré
>>
>>40372110
>Ask about Dupré
So, tell me about your work.
(Almost always degrades into shit talking your boss. Especially when you're on a few drinks)

>Ask about patrol routes
Why?
Well, so I can see know where to see you, of course.
>>
>>40372110
>Ask about alternative entry points

what if they ask where we work?

<Complain about "your boss"( you work at the library, for example), so that they answer with complaints about theirs-Dupre.Get some dirt that way.
<Share with them some stupid story about break-ins at "your workplace",so they tell you about theirs.

You kidding?
We're a delicate lady in the late 1800s France.
We're not SUPPOSED to work.
>>

Can be easily explained as a purely past-time activity,a hobby.
>>
You shift the subject of the conversation to work and start complaining about 'your boss'. "It's so nice to be with you after a shitty day at work. My boss is horrible. I'm a librarian, you'd think that means I have a calm job, but he always has his eyes on me! He always looks over my shoulder, tells me what to do, he's impossible!"

One of the guards vocally joins you in complaining, more than a little affected by his wine. "If you think that's shitty, you haven't met our boss yet! This guy called Dupré, some rich fatcat. Every damned noon he walks in. Every damned noon, when we just start our fuckin' service, he tells us to work harder. We just fuckin' got here, how the hell are we supposed to work harder?!".

The second guard laughs. "Sucks to be you, friend. I'm getting moved to night shift starting tomorrow! Less people to watch, no Dupré and better pay! What are the downsides again?"

So this guy has night shift, you need to get more information out of him. "All alone at night? In that big, scary museum? That must be horrible, right?"

The drunk guardsman laughs louder. "Nah, I've heard it's amazing! Each floor has three guards, one for each floor... on paper! Without Dupré sticking his nose where it doesn't belong and without annoying visitors, the three night guards usually patrol together. Heard it's mad fun, can't wait for tomorrow's shift to start!"

You've learned quite a bit today
>Call it a day, go home and discuss everything with Philippe
>Ask more [Write-in]
>Write-in

>>40372358
I think non-upper class women did work, just very menial tasks.
>>
>>40372512
>Each floor has three guards
Each WING.

Proofreading, what's that?
>>
>>40372512
>Ask them,do they get to eat or drink while on night shift (maybe we can knock them out with sedatives)
>Ask about menial stuff, just to not raise any suspitions. After that, call it a day,go to Philippe.
>>
>>40372593
Second.

We should swing by the museum around noon tomorrow and "accidentally" run into the big guy on campus.

Captcha, you can't expect me to call that blackened hunk of meat a steak, can you?
I have standards, you cunt.
>>
>>40372512
>Call it a day, go home and discuss everything with Philippe

let's not get ahead of ourselves we still have many nights to steal that, so we better head back

More night shift talk followed by small talk

Call it a day

There's just one last question you'd like to ask about night shift before you're satisfied. "Night shift must be long and tiring. Do you get anything to eat or drink?"

The second guard snorts. "Nope, but that never stopped anyone! I hear the guys with night shift always sneak in a bottle of wine to help them pass the night. Nobody sees it, nobody gets hurt. It's great."

The first guard grumbles a bit. "Stop talking about how great night shift is! Some of us are still stuck on day shift, you know?"

The rest of the evening passes uneventfully. You have some small talk about the weather, current events, the best market stands and other trivialities before you bid the two men goodnight and head home.

You greet your butler with great joy. "Philippe, I've learned so much tonight! I know about the night shift patrols, when to find Dupré, and-"

Philippe cuts you short. "Madame, please calm down! You look really tired, get some sleep first. We'll discuss everything tomorrow morning." You can't find it in you to disagree, you've been up and about all day and look forward to a hot bath and a good nights rest.
