Last Episode: Amelia, Ray, and Pytor made their way through the ruins of a Peninsular city, in their pursuit of Lupa and Emmy. They came to a roadblock ambush, which they were able to reverse on their assailants, the People-Of-Joy. After some tense hostage negotiations, the trio was able to get past the roadblock, and get some clues as to where the girls were being taken. There was a slight altercation in the RV that left Amelia blood-spattered (Not hers), but unhurt. After that, they rolled on towards Tributary.

It's been many hours of non-stop driving/battery charging/sleeping, but you've finally reached the border between, what used to be, two nations.

The Tributary-Peninsular bridge is an impressive ruin. Miles long over a choppy expanse of water, there are huge swooping archways that have broken or crumbled. Anything metal on the bridge has been slightly worn away to rust, wind, and sea spray. A shell of calcified green covers one side.

Ray frowns as he looks across the bridge. “Well, someone’s certainly done some repair jobs. I can see fresh looking metal plating here and there.” He’s not using binoculars, but that doesn’t surprise you at this point.

“They drove a van over this.” Pyotr says.

“I doubt it weighed as much as your RV.” You say.

“Hrmph.” Pytor says.

You’ve been having this argument for the past ten miles, ever since you first saw the bridge in the distance. You know the bridge is a deathtrap, and the RV is a hefty vehicle. Even without deliberate sabotage, you’d feel unsafe about driving that thing across. The safest thing is to hide and lock up the RV, take everything you can in packs, and hoof it from here.

However, Pytor is unwilling to give up his RV. You almost understand why. This is his home, after all. Also, the slower you’re travelling, the further away the girls get. What’s infuriating is that he seems to be totally unwilling to acknowledge the danger. Just a grunt, and muttered phrases that equate to ‘We’ll be fine if we’re careful.’ The kid isn’t much help, not wanting to argue with Pytor. Although, you can’t exactly fault anyone who doesn’t wish to antagonize a brute like that.

> Give up and put in the effort to get the RV across the bridge, so what if there’s danger of losing everything and/or dying.
> Insist on the safer, slower, route of securing the RV, and loading up to continue your journey on foot.

The last thing you want to do is get into a fight with Strakel. Because you know all too well as to how he ends his fights.

So, now the question is, what's the best plan?

Scouting is probably the best idea, since you know better than to just drive over the thing. You have the tactical experience, and Ray's got those freaky senses of his, behind those granny glasses. Pytor will be driving.

> Send a scout to go over the bridge and then send the RV across. That's the best way to scout the bridge, and it gives you plenty of time to catch and fix problems that you spot, but it's also the slowest, and if something goes south, it'll be hard to react.

> Have the RV follow the scout a couple of feet behind you. It's slightly faster. Also, if something goes wrong, you'll be right there to help fix it, hopefully, but it's way more riskier and reduces your ability to catch problems before they are subject to the weight of the RV.

You and Ray start to walk across the bridge, as the RV slowly rumbles behind you.

Ray keeps giving you side looks as the pair of you slowly walk, prod metal sheeting with your feet, and make sure that the ground is solid enough.

"So, why did you free Pytor again?" Ray asks.

"He was the best chance to find Lupa and Emily." You say. "Otherwise, Genesis would waste time interrogating him and having council meetings."

"And why are you so concerned about that?" He asks.

"I owe the Carcels, Emily's family, a favor." You say. "A big one."

"Ah." He nods and keeps up his watch.

At a certain point, the RV is going to have to drive over some calcified ground. You hold up your hand for the RV to stop and you make a check.

There's water on this part of the bridge, and the green/white crust is very brittle, but if the RV goes a little slower, then there shouldn't be much of a problem.

The pair of you keep walking across the bridge.

"Do you believe in God?" Ray asks as the pair of you continue to walk.

You make a non-committal grunt. You were wondering when this topic was going to come up.

"So, you believe in Genesis at least. Right?" He says.

You sigh and nod. You REALLY want to hit him right now. This is NOT the time.

"Alright, answer me one question and I'll drop it forever." Ray says, picking up on your irritation. "Would you rather there be no Heaven or no Hell?"

"What?" You ask. The thought of Ray acquiring a sudden severe injury makes a warm feeling flood through your mind.

"Well, would you rather live in a world where everyone received eternal rest and bliss when they died; or a place where everyone was punished forever, but the bad people got it worse." Ray says. "Dad says that's an important question to ask people."

"Let's just keep going forward." You say, clenching your fist. You REALLY want to hit the preachy little brat.

Ray shrugs. "Take your time. Think about it."

You shake off the annoyance from your focus and go back to doing what's important.

This part of the bridge kind of looks dicey. It's a lot of new looking metal, and some badly poured concrete. Still...appears to be sturdy enough. Probably don't want to completely linger on it though. That might be problematic.

CRUNCH WHIRRRRRRRRR!
Shit!

You both spin around as Pytor instantly stops putting the gas on anything. Well, it looks like the RV has punched through a weak part in the bridge and now one of its wheels is stuck in a hole.

Alright, this isn't so bad, there's a few ways you can get out of this, you'll just need something to slip into the hole, and...

"Amelia, there are people on the other side of the bridge." Ray says.

"What?" You ask.

"Yeah. They don't look like...yeah, they're just squatters or scavengers. I think." He says. "They're looking like the want to decide if they want to come onto the bridge or not."

Shit, well there goes that time luxury.

> Don't worry about those people, get the RV out slowly and carefully by putting rubble and sand in the hole and slowly wedging the RV out

You choke down the urge to slug the annoying choir boy, and just start gathering up gravel, sand, any thing from the RV that you can use to fill in the hole. Then it's a matter of sticking in some long straight pieces of whatever, scrap, rebar, Pytor's spare crowbar, into the hole.

"Yeah, they're getting more people." Ray says, as he keeps a look out. "Probably going to be around eight of them, maybe more."

Shit.

"Alright." You say when you're done, and you pound the side of the RV. "Give it a go."

Okay, so Pytor has a spare tire. It's...not a good spare. It's only mostly the right size, and it's in pretty lousy quality. You expect that it's the original tire that Pytor repaired and you were driving on the spare.

Either way, you all manage to replace the tire. Pain in the ass that it is.

"They're starting to make a barricade." Ray says. "It looks like we're going to have to deal with another 'toll' road." He groans.

"Shut! Up!" You snap at the annoyance, and why the FUCK can't Pytor drive his FUCKING piece of shit RV?

Gha...focus. You have to focus. You have a job to do.

Finally, the three of you start to cross the bridge again. Maybe a little faster than normal, because of the growing threat of the squatters on the end of the bridge.

You're actually looking forward to it. The idea of putting a bullet in SOMEONE is...well, it makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside.

Alright, this is the trap that the POJ were talking about. The metal sheets that cover the bridge here are just metal sheets placed upon a few girders. You drive across them and you are going into the water.

The good news is that you spotted the trap.

The bad news is that you have no clue as to what you need to do in order to get past this. There's not enough room to drive around. There's more holes in this part of the bridge, holes that go all the way through the bridge. Not to mention some junked car wrecks and broken parts of the archway.

"Well...this is a crap situation." Ray says.

One rifle on the guy who's talking, two 9mm. Huh, apparently revolvers aren't as popular in Tributary as they were in Peninsular.

The rest have machetes, knifes, and metal pipes.

No uniform, and no sense of cohesion or organization. So these are probably all squatters who live in one of the buildings nearby and they just raid together as a form of survival.

"Where are we going?" You ask, when Ray ungags you.

"There might be a place where you can get some help." Ray says. "So we're heading there. It's also used by the People of Joy, so...yeah."

"How do you know this?" You ask.

"It's...a little complicated." Ray says. "Well, no. Not that complicated, just it involves us putting some blind trust out there. Pytor's upset, but he doesn't have any better ideas."

"Still haven't explained anything." You say, trying to keep your temper in check.

"There's this woman on the radio. She wants to help." Ray says.

"Why?" You ask.

"Because we crossed the bridge, and she's only seen People of Joy cross it. Since we aren't them, she wanted to know who we were. She says she was screwed over by them. She wants us to help her, but we...well, I said...that unless you got help first, we wouldn't be of any use to her."

"Thank you." You say.

"You just relax." Ray says. "Do you need anything? Water?"

The idea of water turns your stomach. You shake your head.

"I'd like you to uncuff me." You say.

"Pytor has the keys, and he's...well...yeah." Ray says with a shrug. "You just relax and...try to stay calm."

Ray goes back to the front seat.

You suddenly get another spike of fear in your mind. Ray's lying. It makes sense. He's a mindless little zealot. You can't trust people like that. They're annoying and the enemy.

You turn and see a pile of garbage bags, you grab one and vomit into it.

It's a mouthful of black bile. Two mouthfuls, actually...wait no...four. Ugh, you're just retching at this point, you can feel tears down your face it's so bad.

Finally it ends, and you wipe off your mouth and your face. Ugh, now your sleeve is covered in that disgusting looking bile.

You feel better though. Still in a lot of pain in your chest.

"You okay, Amelia?" Ray asks.

"Fuck you." You groan.

"She's okay." Ray says.

The RV rolls through the city. You fade back into sleep.

She is calm and she stares at the map. It once was filled with pieces, now nothing but ruin.

If it was her nature, she would cry...or laugh.

She had nothing to do with this at all. It's kind of funny...but it's not.

All she can do is follow and wait.

She notices you at this point. She clucks her tongue, in annoyance and nostalgia. This hasn't happened in a long time. She's amused. Caitiff may remain, but it's certainly tougher than it used to be. Well, no matter.

She waves her hand, and you wake up with Ray shaking your shoulder.

"We're here." He says, as he unlocks your handcuffs. "You were moaning something."

"Some woman...not her fault...just watching." You say. "Ugh, I dunno."

"Thirsty?" Ray asks, offering you some water. "It's been a while. You need to drink."

The water feels revolting, tastes horrid, and you want to vomit it up again, but you keep it down.

You walk out into the sunshine, in front of a building.

"What is this place? How long was I out?" You ask.

"A night." Ray says. "We had to wait until a Hound Pack left."

"That smoke?" You ask, pointing at the horizon.

"Yeah. We think there's a fire or something. It's on the other side of town, we'll be long gone before it gets near us. I hope." Ray says.

You limp inside the building with Ray. "So...something in here works?" You ask. It...really doesn't look like it does. Seriously. The place is a salvaged husk.

"The radio woman is helping Pytor get the emergency power back on. Says it'll be enough to help...I hope." Ray says.

"Do you know where we're going?" You ask, as you limp along.

"I...think so." Ray says. "These symbols mean emergency and cleansing/purification. Come on."

You feel a little spike of fear. You're not sure you should trust Ray. He's not going to hurt you...but his knowledge of Civ is...well...iffy. He might end up killing you. You should look for better signage.

You hear Ray shouting...something nonsensical. Probably has to do with God, whatever. Blah blah blah.

The lights are back on. Huh, Pytor got the place running again. That's good of him. He's a scary bastard, but he's competent in what he does, no doubt about that.

Although, it would be nice if he could turn off the alarms and the flashing red lights.

A spike of fear.

Shit. Shit shit shit! They NOTICED? HOW?! After so long, and they STILL have them? They still work?! FUCK! No time for subtle. This place is going to kill you.

You start to hyperventilate. Yeah...yeah this place is going to kill you. There's alarms going off, and your two idiots tripped them. You see shutters on the window starting to close and you have to get out of here.

Time to run, don't worry about the others, the alarms killed them. They're already dead. You need to escape. Need to get away. You can do this. Just run. Run RUN.

You bolt through the halls of the hospital. You feel something wet on your stomach. Doesn't matter. Keep running. You'll be safe when you aren't here. That's whats important.

Pytor is there coming up from a set of stairs. You shout at him and wave your arms. You both have to get out of here. Ray's dead, and Pytor's going to be killed by the alarms, and the doors are...oh thank God the shutters are jammed on this window, all you need to escape is jump out the window. You'll be fine. You'll be safe, once you're outside. Just jump through the window.

Don't worry about Pytor. He's just shouting because he's scared of the alarms. Who isn't scared of the alarms? They're bringing death. Just jump out the window and you'll be safe.

>>
>>40378847
You stop after two steps as sanity reasserts itself back into your mind. Jumping out of a window is a very good way to get lacerated and dead, swiftly.

You hold up your hand to Pytor, stopping him from tackling you. Tears are streaming down your face as you drop to your knees and vomit up more black goop. Also, you're pretty sure your sutures have opened.

"Pick her up." A new voice says. You see that Pytor has a radio. He picks you up in his arms, and marches you through the halls.

"I need to talk to her." The radio says.

Pytor hands you the radio. "Miss. You are in the advance stages of...something. You need to get treatment." The Voice says. "The good news is that the machinery and treatment centers in this place still works. The People of Joy have been using them. Thankfully, they've been called away due to another priority. I can direct the men to use them. You will be...your condition will be cured."

"However, there will be a cost to pay. You won't be the same, and there will be side effects." The voice says. "I know it may be silly to say, but you might wish to view your options."

"What are my options? Do it or die?" She says.

"There's another option. You can be treated partially, to stabilize your body, and then placed into a Stasis Chamber. Those things can run for ages. Perhaps later, the facility will be restored to full operation, and you'll be treated successfully and safely. Not this slap-dash treatment that's the only option now."

"So...do it now, but it'll have nasty side-effects...or go into a sleep...with no promise I'll ever wake up?" You whimper. "Not a great set of picks."

"Life rarely grants them." The Voice says. "Now, before you become silly again, tell me, what will it be?"

> Go through the treatment now, to hell that it's not the 'right' treatment, or the horrible, permanent side effects. You'll take it.

> You've had enough. You'll take the preventive care, and go to sleep. It's too much, and you're ready to rest.

"Do it." You say. "I have...duties. I can't sleep."

"Very well. Get her to the operating room." The Voice says.

Pytor walks some more, and you're heaved onto a table.

"Do I need to take her clothes off?" Pytor asks.

In any other situation, you would be vastly more upset with that statement than you are right now.

"Unnecessary. The procedure will do the majority of the work. Leave the room, and allow the Accepting to handle it. I'll need his reaction time." The Voice says.

"Testing?" A voice says over the PA. It's Ray. "Okay, Pytor. I'm good to go. There are a LOT of shiny buttons here...I can read most of them. I start with...this one...right?"

You look upwards and see an array of mechanical arms, spring to life and lower towards you. They have drills, scalpels, glowing spheres, and other instruments of precision and distress.

One of them puts a suction cup around your face and you hear a soft hiss...

Your vision blurs...

Then it comes back. You're in a bed, and you're wearing an Environment Suit. One of those complete ones with a hood and gloved sleeves.

You slowly get out of the bed.

You make your way to a large room, ruins of chairs and some skeletons the occupants. Along with a Salvager and a Confessor who look very angry with a radio.

"-hould have told us that they were JUST across town!" Ray says to the radio. "Or told them that WE were HERE!"

"I did not know that you two were associated with each other." The Voice says.

"Well, you know now, right?" Ray says. "So tell them to get back here!"

"No." The Voice says. "And you two should think about moving the woman and leaving soon yourself. The People of Joy will be arriving soon. Especially if they have to modify their people again, thanks to the loss of their staff."

"We can take them." Ray says.

Pyotr shakes his head. "We got away because they didn't want us and weren't equipped for a fight. They won't be so kind here."

"They should still come back to meet up with us." Ray says.

"No." The Voice says. "If you wish to reunite, then I suggest you follow them. I'm not giving up my chance at freedom, just because you have a silly emotional bond with Joy-In-Ashes."

"Her name is Lupa." Ray says.

"Hmph. Typical response." The Voice says. "This conversation is getting too silly for me to stand. I have better things to do. I will alert you if you need to move." Click.

"I am going to punch that woman in the face." Ray says.

"What happened to forgiveness and all that God crap?" You ask.

"You're up!" Ray says with a smile. He takes a few steps towards you, and then stops. He frowns, and then sighs. "You look well...ummm...Pytor dressed you in that. We found it when we were salvaging the place."

You look at Pytor. He nods. You feel...a little Not Okay with that, but you suppose that needs must...but...why was this needed.

Pytor points at a mass of overgrowth, some ivy that's taken over a wall. "Touch it...and don't be too alarmed about your skin."

Okay...that's not good.

You go to the overgrowth, and unzip the sleeve on your suit and...yeah...that's...upsetting.

Your skin is now slightly translucent. You can see the veins and arteries in your arm, not clearly, but its enough for people to notice if they got close. Also, you can see what look like small metal...things...placed in a few places.

Well...some cosmetic looks versus death or in an eternal coma...you can deal with that. You guess.

Then you remember that you have to touch the overgrowth. You do...and the leaves slowly wither and turn brown at your touch. Worse, a few don't, and start to take on that oily rainbow sheen of fallout plants.

You notice now that your skin feels very warm.

"Apparently the People of Joy to this to themselves." Pytor says. "Lupa and Emily ran into one of them. The Voice says that they modify themselves far too much, you only have the bare minimum."

(Cont)

>>
>>40380009
"So...I'm a living hazard? Is that why I have to wear this?" You ask.

Pytor nods. "I used gloves. If someone touches you for too long, you'll burn them."

You shake your head, trying not to accept what's happening. You scream and punch the wall. Then you sob and collapse onto the ground.

You aren't sure now that death or eternal sleep weren't the better options.

"There is a plus." Pytor says.

"What?" You ask.

Pytor carefully hands you a Junk Gun. You hold it, curious, and then your eyes widen as lights within the gun slowly light up.

"Found it in the security room. The charge isn't as strong or as quick as the people who completely modify themselves...according to the Voice." Pytor says. "But it should still be functional."

You turn and fire the Junk Gun at the wall. There's a ZOT, and the three of you stare as there's a clear hole, and a good chunk of melted plaster.

This...you can live with.

"Come on." Pytor says. "We need to get to the RV and get after the girls."

"They aren't with the People of Joy?" You ask as you slip your arm back into the sleeve.

"Nah," Ray says as you all move. "They escaped and they're apparently going to where that Voice woman is and free her. She's stuck somewhere, and needs help to escape."

You nod. "Well, I certainly hope that we find the girls."

And you wouldn't mind meeting the Voice woman either...you'll have plenty of time to decide before you see her if you'd rather give her a nice firm handshake, or an enveloping hug. Some kind of skin to skin contact.

You know...as 'thanks.'
