You're stuck amidst the chaos of the battlefield. With their high-ranking officers all dead, the Imperial soldiers and Gallian traitors might as well be animals, but cornered animals with nothing to lose tend to be dangerous. Before you, the soldiers grab whatever weapons they have on end and hide behind improvised cover.

The upside is that the chaos gives you an opportunity to move around undetected. Until the Imperials dig in and can actively start looking for threats, they shouldn't have any attention to spare for you unless you deliberately draw attention for yourself.

Your current spot should be good for another shot or two if you want to take out a few more soldiers before you leave, but that's exactly the sort of thing that would draw attention to yourself.

You could also wait for the Imperials to set up their defences before returning to your squad. You might be able to get some useful information.

Or you could just return to your squad now. They'll be expecting you and you'd rather not worry them any more than you have to.

You take a deep breath and exhale to calm yourself down. The Gallian forces are advancing quickly, but they'll slow down once the Imperials get their shit together. At that time, a little intelligence might help you keep up the pace.

You use your rifle's scope to sweep your gaze across the Imperial camp and note the major defensive positions. It's mostly standard stuff - sandbags, crates, a fortuitous rock every now and then - but there are also some people taking cover around tanks or behind machine gun emplacements. You take out a piece of paper to make a rough drawing of the camp and mark the most dangerous Imperial positions. It's not a work of art, but it'll get the job done.

The Imperials are visibly less stressed and you can see low-ranking officers handing out orders and guiding their subordinates. You turn your gaze towards the battle line to see how successful their defense is.

With the tanks at the vanguard and on the flanks, the Gallian has devoured about a quarter of the Imperial encampment in just a few short minutes. The Imperial forces around the Valkyrur temple are trying to join the fray, but they're being held back by the Gallian rear guard.

Victory is tilting towards your side. It's time for you to get back.

You gather your things and break towards the advancing Gallian forces. Based on what you remember of the plan, your squad shouldn't be too far away.

You're tired and covered in sweat by the time you're in sight of the Gallians, but you immediately spot your own squad at the vanguard, just a little bit on the side. You smile and make your way towards them, only for a stream of bullets to hit the sand around you.

You reflexively leap forward and hide behind a rock. You peak your head out and see a small group of shocktroopers and scouts gathered around a machine gun, along with an engineer.

You look at your team. At this rate, they'll engage the Imperials who have you pinned down soon, but it's clear that they haven't spotted you yet. You're on your own for the next few seconds.

The scouts are firmly behind cover - you might be able to snipe one of them, but it'd be close and it wouldn't help you that much anyway. On the other hand, the engineer's grenades might get you and the shocktrooper on the machine gun's an immediate problem.

You could also take a few pot shots at your squad to draw their attention your way and get their help, but it'd be a little rude.

>Take a shot at the shocktrooper.
>Take a shot at the engineer.
>See if you can get your squad's attention.

You hold your rifle over your head and brace it against the rock, waiting for the shocktrooper to reload or piss on his gun or whatever it is shocktroopers do with their machine guns. All you need is a window of a few seconds.

That window comes after a long stream of lead. You quickly kneel up and spot the engineer's general direction. You turn the rifle towards him and then look through the scope to focus your shot. You aim your rifle at the engineer's chest and fire. A tiny red spot appears on the engineer's chest and he falls aside, dead.

You duck back behind cover immediately.

That's one problem solved, but you still have five left and your squad isn't here yet.

>Make a dash for your squad.
>Stay behind cover for now.

You hold the rifle above your head and fire at random. Unfortunately, that doesn't frighten the Imperials, who are safely behind cover and who have a significantly higher rate of fire than you do. A lucky bullet goes right through your right arm.

You scream in pain and drop your rifle. You can still use your right hand, so it shouldn't be too bad, and there's both an entry and an exit wound, so you won't have to dig the bullet out, at least. You take a piece of cloth from your bag and wrap it around your arm as best as you can to staunch the bleeding. You'll get enough shit for this as it is, you don't want to image what it'll be like if your squad finds you passed out.

Speaking of which, you hear the familiar sound of a tank shell striking the sand. You very, very carefully look around the corner of the rock you're hiding behind and see your team has finally reached the Imperials. That makes your options a little better.

Calling for a medic is the obvious thing to do, but while you're confident in Stroheim's abilities, you're not sure you want her to run out in the open while a machine gun is in play, even if you could use some first aid. You could run out to meet your squad, but that would leave you in the open with a machine gun staring at you, and you've already been shot it. You could also take another shot at the Imperials now that they have more pressing problems to deal with.

With the shocktroopers distracted, you decide to take a chance. You set your rifle up again and aim a shot at the soldier in charge of the machine gun emplacement. The bullet wound hurts like hell and you can't prevent your finger from shaking as it hovers over the trigger. You weakly pull the trigger back, knowing that the mechanism doesn't need all that much pressure.

The bullet launches with a bang. The shocktrooper, who's turned towards your squad, is hit squarely in the back. He slams into the machine gun and slowly falls to the ground.

"Is that you, Captain?" You hear someone - Schreiner, probably - yell over the noise of the battlefield.

"Yeah, it's me," you yell back. "You came in at a really good time."

"Just hold on!" You hear Schreiner yell again. "We'll get to you in a second - SHIT!"

You turn to see the two scouts break off at a run. They circle around your squad and move to flank them.

Meanwhile, one of the shocktroopers is taking over the machine gun.

"Deal with the shocktroopers!" You yell. "We'll handle the scouts afterwards!"

"Yes, sir!"

You aim at the shocktroopers and fire. At the same time, Kreuss and Garcia - who's manning the tank's machine gun turret - open fire as well. You get a kill, while the second shocktrooper is heavily wounded. Schreiner and Leifstel leap into their small fortification to finish him off.

You emerge from behind cover and join your team. Stroheim takes out her first aid kit the moment she sees the bandage wrapped around your arm.

"How bad is it?" She asks.

"Shouldn't be too bad," you say. "I can use my hand fine aside from the main and the bullet went right through."

Stroheim takes the bandage off and cuts off your sleeve.

"Right, this won't take a second." She applies her ragnite treatment and the pain immediately begins to fade.

Meanwhile, Moeller moves her tank between your squad and the scouts.

"What's the situation?" You ask Schreiner.

"The Imperials' front line collapsed immediately after we attacked and they haven't done a great job of rallying together," he says. "Things are beginning to slow down, but the battle is still in our favour."

"Good," you say. "I have a rough map of the area. The General will want to see it, but I want to deal with the scouts first."

They're currently hiding behind some sandbags. They joined other Imperial soldiers to set up a defensive line, but it's a shabby thing. All it would take is one little hole…

>"Let's just gun them down."
>"Take them out with a grenade."

"Stroheim, once you're done patching me up, I want you to clear those scouts out with a grenade," you say.

"Yes, sir," Stroheim says. "Just give me a second to finish this up…"

Stroheim covers what's left of your wound with a fresh bandage and takes a grenade from the pack hanging off her waist. She hides behind Moeller's tank until she's closer to the Imperial scouts and lobs her grenade at them in a wide arc. The grenade lands next to the scouts and promptly explodes.

Stroheim's not a soldier by choice, but when it comes down to it, she'll get the job done.

The nearby Imperial soldiers reflexively back away from the explosion. This creates an opening in their defense line that the Gallians are all too willing to exploit.

Gallian shocktroopers and fencers widen the breach in front of you. A few more explosions elsewhere create more cracks in the Imperial line. Soon, their defense collapses completely and the Gallian Army resumes its rampage.

Wiping out the Imperials completely will take time, but it's almost inevitable now.

"Should we keep going, Captain?" Schreiner asks.

The Gallian Army is doing well and you need to return to General Gunther with the notes you took. You won't be missed for the moment.

"No, but stay alert," you say. "I need to speak with General Gunther."

"Yes, sir."

You withdraw from the battlefield, but there are dozens of soldiers to take your place. Schreiner leads you to the General, who's overseeing the battle himself.

"Sir." You snap to a salute.

"Excellent job out there, Captain," General Gunther says. "According to our reports, all the snipers accomplished their objectives."

"Thank you, sir." You hand him the rough map you made. "I noted some of the enemy positions down. The information might be outdated now, but it's better than nothing."

General Gunther takes the map and looks it over.

"Good, good." The General nods and mumbles softly. "Looks like things are looking up for us."

"Is something wrong, sir?" You ask.

The General nods towards one of the captured Imperial flags.

"That's the personal crest of Duke von Lohengramm," General Gunther says. "Heard of him?"

"I can't say I have, sir."

"According to our intelligence reports, he should be overseeing the war against the Atlantic Federation. He and his generals are responsible for every major battle the Empire has won against the Federation so far."

"That sounds like someone we need to kill," you say. "And now that his victory streak ended, that doesn't seem impossible."

"It's a bit too early to say his victory streak ended," General Gunther says. "He probably just lent some of his soldiers to Konrad. I don't think he'd come here personally. I wouldn't be surprised if this was just a test to gauge Konrad's ability."

"I guess that's possible, sir," you say. "Anyway, where do you need us?"

"You can take your squad back to the rear lines," the General says. "The Imperial forces that were surrounding the temple are beginning to pull back, but I don't want to take any chances. Take any opportunity to harass them, but don't push your luck. They'll have to take a detour to get back home as it is, and I don't want to stretch our forces too far out."

"Yes, sir." You salute once again. "We'll take care of it."

The General returns your salute. You go back to your squad to inform them of their new orders. It's not much - just mop-up work at most - but someone has to do it.
