You are Shane Morris. You are definitely a wizard.

You are also definitely in some kind of necromancer lair hidden in the dungeons of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The sluice above your head which acted as a gate to this descending staircase has closed, and a black liquid has filled up over it, somehow not cascading through the metal latices as it should. Going back could be difficult.

Your friends Linus and Alex are with you, along with Linus' cousin Sam. You are here to save Jenny Black, a first year Ravenclaw girl who disappeared several days ago.

The staircase you are on is illuminated by the light of your four wands. It winds down for quite a while, and given you have nowhere else to go, you start down. There is an oppressive feeling, almost like claustrophobia, but deeper and more visceral, the claustrophobia of a mausoleum, not a closet. The thought that you might never leave because you might die down here.

After a few turns the staircase bottoms out into a hallway. The light of your wands only shows about 10 feet down the hall before it grows dark, there are doors on either side of you.

>What do you do?

Slowly crack open the door on the right and check the room out.

Crack open the door on the right, with the others arranged behind us to give us whatever support they can if something comes through the door.
Do this for the left door if there's nothing behind the right one.
>>
You decide to test the right door, you slowly crack it open with everyone behind you ready to start casting spells if they see anything.

The room proves to be empty, of people at least. It's a library of sorts with maybe fifty books on a set of poorly constructed shelves. The books are old, and a cursory glance at the covers tells you that most of them aren't in english. A small table takes up most of the room, where it looks like someone was in the process of translating one of the books. Bound stacks of parchment fill bins all over the room, you assume they are translations.

“Alex, gather what you can, we'll be back.” You say quietly.

Linus, Sam and You cross back over to the lefthand door and open that. This seems to be a more conventional kind of storage room, and a more terrifying one as well. Scattered about the room on a few series of shelves are an incredible variety of artifacts that you assume to be magical in nature. Little glowing orbs filled with smoke, gyrating globes, even a few wands. But beyond these were the body parts. Scores of mummified, embalmed, and taxidermied human limbs are scattered about. Some are so well preserved you wonder if they might be fresh. You need to find Jenny.

“Clues, evidence, supplies. I wanna know what's going on down here, and we need to be able to prove something's up if we want anyone to do anything about this.”

“Okay, sounds good.” Linus says. “Should we grab an, uh, arm or something then?”

“Yeah, do that.”

After ransacking the storage room you return to the hall where Alex is levitating a bin full of various papers.

“Stack it all here and lets keep moving.” You say.

After everything is stacked by the stairwell you continue. The hall is fairly long, and bends slightly toward its end opening out into a largish room, bigger than any classroom you've seen in the castle. There are benches and chairs all set facing toward the front of the room where there stands a podium. In the back, behind the podium is another door. The room is otherwise empty excepting a bit of litter here and there.

Approaching the door you find it locked, you can hear a crackling sound from beyond the door. Sam steps forward and tries a spell, but the door doesn't unlock.

>What now?
>>
>>40375539
Right, totally forgot about the mastery. Thanks, tb.
>>
What material is the door made of?
>>
>>40375652
Muninn.
>>
>>40375737
Solid wood.
>>
Either pull the bolt from the hinges if they're on your side of the door, or ask someone with an appropriate spell to do it if the hinges are on the side you can't access. Then, apply the proper leverage and it should come off easily enough. Should.
If this fails, suggest lighting the door on fire or otherwise weakening it.
>>
>>40375912
this
>>
You try something obvious to start. “Muninn.” Nope, nothing.

Then you try looking for hinges. No dice. “Can anyone pull out the hinges on the other side of the door?”

“If first years could do that, no one in the wizarding world would use hinges on their doors anymore.” Alex points out.

“Right then, wands out. Burn the door down.”

The four of you turn your wands on the door and start burning it.

Unfortunately Incendio produces a small burst of flame rather than anything resembling a flamethrower, and you don't seem to be making much progress, in fact you're starting to remember that applying heat can sometimes make wood stronger. You stop.

>>
You spread out and start searching the room. After finding nothing you try looking through the papers. While what you find there is dark and disturbing, it doesn't help you open the door.

Finally you have an idea. You run back to the storage room and find what looks to be some kind of probe. You go back to the door and jam it in the crevice between the door and the wall.

“Linus, expand it.”

Linus casts the spell and the probe slowly swells. The crackling sound is overcome by the sound of creaking wood and finally the edge of the door, lock and all, burst off. The door swings open.

Inside is Jenny.

She is stretched out on a table in some kind of stasis or trace laying completely still. Her arm from just above her fingers to a little above her elbow is wreathed in wildly crackling, dancing, red flame. Not red in the sense of normal fire, an angry red. And even from your distance it is warming your face.

The room is decorated in candles, all of which are extinguished, and black drapery giving it the impression of a sinister funeral parlour.

You all stand and try to get a hold on what to do, the heat from the fire makes it very hard to approach, but it looks like you might have trouble putting it out too. You look around for traps, and try going through the papers again, no traps, and no information you can readily find about the flame or how to put it out.

You get the feeling that you don't have much longer before morning, and you don't want to be around to be found by any early risers, you're going to have to do something quick.

You make a final attempt at the levitating charm before turning back to the others.

“I'm gonna go grab her. Then we leave even if you guys have to carry both of us out of here.”

Alex tries to argue but you're already gone, braving the heat. It's nothing like a hot day, or even spilling tea on yourself. It's like stepping into an oven, its dry, harsh, and the wind swirls about you wildly. The table, made of stone, burns your skin as you brush against it, and the burns immediately blister.

As you grab her the fire abates slightly, but also brushes against you. At once the heat is gone, or at least feels gone, and you're overcome with a sense of exhaustion.

You muscle through it, even though your legs feel like lead, and your muscles feel like particularly limp noodles. You make it outside the perimeter of the heat and collapse. You see your friends looking down in concern before passing out.

You wake up in the hospital wing. A number of cards adorn your nightstand, and looking down you are pleasantly surprised to find that you have no noticeable scars, wounds, or other disfigurements of any kind, aside from some mundane scarring on the back of your hand from the table.

Looking around you see no one, though the bed next to you has its curtains drawn. You start to peruse your cards. They're from Ravenclaws mostly. The first year girls sent one. Alex too, oddly enough undersigned by Robbie, Henry, and L.B. Who you realize must be Lom. One from Linus, Sam and the rest of the mirror room crew.

The last one catches your eye.

'Dear Mr. Morris' It reads.

'I and my husband wish to thank you dearly for recovering our daughter, and hope that any damage sustained doing so is quickly healed. We understand that you put yourself in great personal danger in doing so, both physically and academically, and you have our word that should it come to it you shall have our full support in lobbying to remain at Hogwarts.'

You set down the card and lay back. You did it. Wherever she is now and whatever it cost you, you did it.

A thousand questions flood your mind. How is she doing? What happened to the others? Did whoever was responsible end up being caught? What about all the stuff you took? Where's your wand? Did that card say you might be expelled?

All in all it proves too much, and you drift off back to sleep.

When you awaken again it is to a room full of people. The Nurse, Professors Ricimer and Morse, The Headmaster, a few men in dark robes and flatcaps, a regal looking man who looks vaguely like Winston Churchill, and a man with a quill in his cap being followed by a man with a camera.

“Oh relax son.” Says Winston Churchill. “You're not going to be expelled if I have anything to say about it. And I most certainly do.” He hooks his fingers into his coat and gives you a knowing look like you should know who he is.

“You've been asleep for five days. You came in contact with a very powerful sleep magic. It's taking young Ms. Black even longer to recuperate.” Says the Nurse.

“She's going to be alright then?”

“Some major scarring on her arm but no permanent damage.”

You breathe a sigh of relief.

“So, to start do you have any questions?”

“What happened after I passed out?”

“Your friends collected you and brought you back to the stairway which Professor Morse was in the process of forcing open. With help from below she was able to open the grate and get you all to safety.”

“So Morse was tracking me.”

“Indeed, and I think at some point you should thank her for that, or you might have simply been trapped down there until someone came along and undid all the good you did.”

“Then what?”

“Ms. Black was committed to the hospital, a proper one, and you were brought here. Your friends have been visiting you daily, along with a large number of other first years.”

“So what now?”

“Now we deal with the fallout. What you've done has opened the floodgates, or rather what you stopped. The fight between the old families and changing times has now gone from an underground affair to something brought into open light, at least for anyone paying enough attention. It would have been better for everyone perhaps if this could have been quietly swept under the rug, another mysterious disappearance at Hogwarts. No such luck.”

“You're saying she should have died.”

“Not should have. You must understand I am happy that she is safe, but perhaps everyone else would have been safer in the long run if she had simply... disappeared.”

“Mr. Morris, I fear that you are wrong. I very deeply do.” With that he stood and waved over the officers.

With all of your interviews done, the Nurse ushers everyone out so you can get some sleep. As it happens a five day nap doesn't make you particularly sleepy. You instead decide to read the rest of your cards.

All of them are really nice, and everyone of them further assures you that you did the right thing.

The last one you read happens to be Linus' card, which is one of those expensive double folded cards, and this one in particular seems to be magic. As you open it it sings you a song about getting better and little paper fireworks move around on the inside.

As you go to set it down one of the paper fireworks shoots right off the card and lands in your lap.

As you go to pick it up you see that there is actually a small folded parchment with a wax seal taped to the back. The seal is in white wax and has some kind of flower on it. Opening it reveals a single line.

'Get well soon. From the Order of the White Marigold.'
