"Agains."

You pick yourself slowly up off the cold, wet cobblestones of the wharf. Your body aches, but this isn't like your training against Djanna so long ago. You grit your teeth as Garush crosses his arms, the sun blazing as it rises over the eastern wall of Dvotysk, casting its light into the Silver Sea. Emma is still asleep, the lazy fox, and Djanna stands against the massive doors of the warehouse holding a larger, freshly purchased, healer's bag at the ready. You taste blood and spit it onto the stones. You know Garush is going easy on you, but still.

With a roar, you kick off from a crouching position, bounding toward him with a fist raised, intent on attempting to take him out with a single blow. He easily catches your punch, picks you up off your feet, and tosses you away like you were nothing, sending you tumbling away from him once more. This time, you don't rise. You'd been at it since before sunup, and you were just... just so tired. You hear the familiar clicking of claws on stone, and Djanna is at your side, worry in her voice as she whimpers your name.

"Ya can'ts always justs charges troubles heads-ons, girl. Dats how yas gots cuts ups in da tombs. Sometimes ya gots ta tinks befores yas fights, ya knows?" You hear heavy booted footsteps cross the stones and come to a stop over you.

You'd asked him to help train you, to help you get stronger, but at this point it just felt like he was mocking you. You know better, of course, but the difference in your strength is just too much. You're faster, more flexible, more energetic, but Garush... he's just a monster. Still, when have you ever been one to pass by good advice?

>Accept the lesson. Let Djanna treat your scrapes and bruises.

SYSTEMS:

Rolling: d100, best of three, roll under, degrees of success (roll compared to DC/opponent rolls and the amount by which you succeed/fail will matter). 1/100 are crit successes/fails, and override other rolls. A crit fail and success on the same roll means the remaining die result will be used.

Win/Lose by 10: Slight Success/Failure

10-20: Moderate Success/Failure

Greater than 20: Extreme Success/Failure

Voting/Writing: Ten minutes for voting, 20-40 minutes for writing as needed.

Final Destination: If a vote is tied/contended, I will call for FINAL DESTINATION, and present the most popular options. For those who don't know, you must vote precisely in the form of ">vote" without additional commentary. This extends 4chan's native post delay from one minute to five, and prevents samefagging or vote padding.

Exploration: While I have a general outline of what's going to happen, sometimes there are instances where things are left to chance. In those cases, I'll call for 1d10, and take the first given. Low rolls are beneficial encounters, with the higher you go being more dangerous. A result of 10 can actually be threatening to the character, and should be treated as such.

You nod, rising slowly to a sitting position, shoulders hunched and eyes cast to the ground. Djanna gives you a once-over, finding nothing she can actually treat. Garush extends a massive hand to you and you take it, letting the orc haul you to your feet. He claps a hand on your shoulder lightly, but it still makes you stumble forward a step.

"Ya punchs likes a wild cannons, don'ts gets me wrongs. Ya justs needs ta refines ya techniques a bits. Don't worries, yer youngs yet. Dere'll be times." He nods and turns toward the door of the warehouse as it squeaks open. "Well, looks who finallys rose from da deads!"

Emma blinks owlishly in the morning sun as she steps out onto the stones, shoes clicking. "I didn't keep us waiting, did I? I thought you were going to wake me up."

The orc shook his head. "Naw, its goings to bes a longs trips. Thoughts we'd lets yas sleeps. Besides, Nadias askeds mes ta helps hers wit some tings."

You tilt your head slowly side to side, working the cricks out of your neck before you nod. He'd come home smelling like papa when he'd been with Baltas, and about as happy. At that point you could have asked for the moon and he'd have delivered, but with Emma and Djanna getting slashed up by the ghost, there was only one thing you were really interested in, and that was getting stronger. Emma hurries over to you, giving you and Djanna a hug before settling in between the two of you.

Garush vanishes into the warehouse, returning with a massive sea bag slung over his back and yours held in his hand. He holds it out to you, and you take it with a nod of thanks. You don't know why, but you feel decidedly less energetic this morning. Maybe it was getting tossed around by the jolly green giant.

"Well, let's gos girls. Da Skyteeths ain't gonna waits forevers!"

=======================================
>>
>>40409758
You energy has returned by mid-morning and you bound ahead of, behind, and all about the group.

"So tell me about this friend of yours! Does she look like Emma? How does she know how to teach Emma to be a kitt-"

"Kitsune!"

"That's what I was sayin'! How does she know how to teach Emma? Is she pretty? Is she big? Can she fight like you?" You had managed so far to curtail your curiosity, but now as you approached the moutains, towering tall and narrow into the heavens in the distance, the dam had burst. The floodgates opened. The raging torrent was not to be contained.

"I mets her a longs times ago, backs when I was a sea-farin's mans. She was a nice gal, a bits youngers dans I at da times. She hads browns on 'er..." He pointed to Emma's tails, not quite sure if it was appropriate to call attention to a monster girl's extremities or not. "But udder dans dat, yeah. As fer how she can teaches her ta bes a kitsunes, I dunnos if she cans, but if deys da sames race, I don't sees whys nots."

"And what about the last questions?" Djanna asked, practically mumbling and red in the face. "Is she pretty?"

Garush just shrugged, looking anywhere but at the dragon girl. The conversation-that-shall-not-be-named still reared its ugly head, it seemed.

The day passed uneventfully. You walked, camped, and walked again. Two days later, you reached a small foot path leading up into the mountains. Garush dropped his pack and sighed.

"Well, girls. Dis is wheres I leaves yas. I'm sorries, but dere's' no ways I'm gettins throughs da mountains on foots. Da paths ams too narrows fer me, and besides, I don't thinks she wants ta sees me much anyways."

"Why not? Weren't you friends? Seems to me that she'd love to see you again! Why, I bet she-"
>>
>>40409779
Garush raises a hand, cutting you off before you can build up another head of steam. "Let's just says its a matters betweens adults, an' that it's not something cubs shoulds worries abouts."

You start to object, but flashbacks to that dreaded night... no. No, you don't ever want the orc to explain anything to you ever again. You shake your head to clear your mind and slump your shoulders. "Fine..."

Garush reaches forward, ruffling your hair gently. "Dere's a goods girls. Now, ya remembers whats I saids? No lookings for da shrines, go straights dere, an' if ya gets in troubles, dis times, actually runs. Okays?"

The three of you agree with varying levels of eagerness. Hugs dispensed, the orc turns and begins the lonely trek back to the city. As soon as he's out of earshot, you turn to your two cohorts.

"So we're asking her about it, right?"

"Of course." Emma says, crossing her arms.

"Definitely." Djanna agrees with a nod.

You turn back to the mountains behind you, following the trail with your eyes. It winds its way up the face of the mountains, then vanishes into a cave about seventy feet up or so. Easy enough if you get on it. After all, from what you understand, Dvotysk used to trade with the lands on the other side, so this path should be fairly well worn, if a little disused. You shoulder your back and set off, Djanna carrying Emma when the terrain grows too treacherous for her shoes to do any good.
>>
>>40410280
You enter the cave, and your nose is assaulted immediately by a strange, sour stink, like body-odor mixed with something... you're not sure what it is, but you know you don't like it. You whine softly, even that echoing in the cavern ahead. You hear the sound of small pebbles dropping from the ceiling deeper in, skittering off along the rocky surface of the cavern floor. Djanna sets the fox girl on the ground, and in short order the small ball of heatless light is orbiting about her.

"So what are we doing? Over or under?" Djanna asks in a quiet whisper, the stygian darkness of the cave all but demanding silence. Garush had mentioned a footpath over the mountains, but said it would be dangerous and to avoid it if possible. Despite the two of you being born underground, something seemed wrong about this cave, as if you were being watched by a hungry predator.

You swallow the apprehension rising in your throat and point the way forward with a paw, unsheathing your claws to add a little more light to the path ahead. They don't seem to glow as brightly here, but they still glow. A small comfort, perhaps; even here in the deep darkness, you're still being watched over by someone. You move ahead through the bleakness, picking out each footfall carefully. The ground is even, long ago carved and trampled flat by countless passing travellers. Still, that was very long ago. Dust and detritus cover the floors, and the walls are marked here and there with deep gouges and strange stains as if they had not remained unoccupied in the times since trade had ceased. The cave ahead splits, and you follow the right branch as the map had indicated.

You hear a soft sort of whispering ahead, the wind blowing over a vent in the rock maybe. It sounded neither malign or unnatural, and unfortunately, you were growing used to the particular qualities of both. The cave expanded somewhat the further in you went, Emma's light doing less and less to illuminate the walls. Soon enough, it was as though nothing existed but for the three of you and the little patch of ground you were on. It was as though the blackness were trying to swallow you whole.

"We should keep to the wall," You whisper softly, and the girls nod their agreement. Good Nadia, smart girl! Leaving Djanna as a midpoint, you and Emma break away from her just to the edge of her vision, circling slowly until you find the wall. A rusted, burnt-out stone lamp hangs from a peg driven deep into the grey wall and you call over your friends. You walk on, shoulder to shoulder, to keep both the wall and the worn trail as a reference point as you move along.
>>
>>40410811
Soon, the smell of fresh air reaches your nose and you step out into a small natural bridge between two caverns - or is it natural? It's more or less just a long, broad precipice of stone jutting between the caves, as if part of the mountain had been sheared off and fallen just right. You put out a paw and give it a gentle stomp. Seems sturdy enough. The wind is strong up here, but you can sort of detect a scent on the breeze; leather, iron, and... roses?

You close your eyes and steady your breathing. Djanna moves forward, opens her mouth to speak, but you raise a hand to still her. You smell... you're still not sure what it is, but it's stronger from the other side of the bridge, definitely, and down along either side nearest you. Definitely roses - Garush enjoyed them, and kept a few in his own private room. Iron and leather, probably weapons and clothes. Your ears twitched, and you heard a sound even below the wind. Breathing.

You swallowed and took a step back into the cave, the girls unconsciously following your lead. An ambush!

You gather the girls close, crouching in a huddle. "All right. Up ahead, there are... it smells like a few... I don't know what, but they're waiting for us."

Djanna tenses. Emma nods, trusting in her adopted big sister. "What do you need me to do?"

"I'm gonna rush 'em."

Djanna squeaks in fright and starts to object, but you shake your head. "You two stay back. Emma, can you make sure you're both hidden and safe? Then, when they're on me, I need you to... I don't know. Can you make them dizzy or something? Fall down? But, not, like, off the bridge. Unless they're monsters! Like, "monster" monsters. Not like us. I'm not mean! I mean, they may be bad, or they may just be desperate like... um... the big guy, and the skinny guy! What were their names? I-"

"I get it, I get it. I'll figure something out." The little fox girl nods and pats your arm. Djanna shakes her head.

"And what about you? You'll be alone out there! Exposed! What do I do if I can't get to you?"

You smile softly and muss Djanna's hair. It's been getting longer lately, the platinum color really popping next to her darkening scales. "Spit at 'em."

She swallows hard and nods. "If... if you hear me yell, you drop to the ground. All right?"

You nod, huffing in and out three times quickly to psych yourself up. You rise to your full, if unimpressive, height and begin stretching. Arms, shoulders, legs, back, neck, tail... all right! You're ready for this. You hear Emma whispering the words of a spell behind you, and when you look back both she and Emma have taken on the appearance of the gray stone walls. With a nod, a smile, and a wave back, you bound out of the cave along the bridge.
>>
>>40411368
Halfway across, a pair of tall green figures with long, gangly limbs and oversized black eyes drop onto the ground in front of you, one wielding a pick and the other a dagger. They grin, revealing sharp teeth. The one with the pick scrapes it across the bridge, the one with the dagger recklessly slashing the air.

"LIFE OR MONEY GIVE GIVE GIVE!"

"No, no. Is 'Money or life?' How often mama gotta tell you, bonehead?" The one with the pick smacks the other one on the back of the head, and he teeters dangerously close to the edge. You hear a groan behind you, and a quick look over your shoulder reveals two more climbing up from behind, along the sides of the bridge.

"It no matter. Either good, me think. Order not relevant to demand." One of the ones behind you calls out, leaning his worn ice axe up on his shoulder, cupping a hand over his mouth to call over to the others in front of you. The other one, holding a short spear, just looks like he doesn't want to be there.

I'm genuinely curious, wouldn't it be better to ransom for actual usable items, I mean hell, if you ransom people for rations you likely could use them to do things other than hunting for food, and demanding metallic items allows for a good source of mineral wealth that can actually be used. Gold coins don't seem quite that useful here.

Hell, the kobolds, a mountain/cave living group of creatures, don't even use currency as they literally don't need it for anything useful.

You frown and scratch your head as the three greenskins start to argue about how, precisely, to phrase one's demands when engaged in banditry, the argument boiling down to "Mama said," and "It doesn't matter!" You give the air another sniff. These creatures don't have the cub-stink on them. They have to be mature at the very least. So why are they worried about what their mother thinks? And further...

"Hey!"

They cease their bickering and look to you, the one with the ice axe having moved past you with a "'scuse me" to berate his brothers more directly. The bored one with the short spear is just looking straight ahead and sighing.

"What are you going to do with money so far up in the mountains? I mean, we don't have any. Uncle Garush said we can't handle money yet since we're... we're... um, what was the word..." You touch a finger to your lips, tail swishing back and forth as you try to remember. Huh. Not coming to you. Now it's going to bother you. You scratch your head again with a little whine, knocking lightly at your forehead.

"Oh. Well, see, it not 'bout da money. Mama like good tings, so if we take mama good tings she happy. Which remind me. Sorry, but we take yer pack now." The one with the ice axe turns to you, brandishing the weapon. Dagger and Pick do likewise. Dagger cackles maniacally, eyes swirling. Yeah, there's something wrong with Dagger.

"Guys, is just pup. Let's tell mama she have nothing and we let go, yeah? It cold out here and there food waiting." Spear whines, stamping left and right, tucking his spear into an armpit and blowing into his hands. Pick seems to nod, Dagger just seems ready to be let off the chain, and Ice-Axe is having none of it.

"No! Mama said we get loot, an' we get loot. You no want her use... 'voice.'" All four - even Dagger - shudder at once.
>>
>>40411672
You lightly smack your fist against your open palm.

"Is that why you guys smell like roses? Because of Mama?"

"STINK! STINK STINK STINK! SHE SPRAY US WITH THE SMELLY WATER AND IT BURNS OUR EYES! IT BURNS US, PRECIO-"

Pick smacks Dagger upside the back of the head again. "How many times I gotta smack ya before ya talk right?"

Dagger whimpers and slumps down, eyes darting between his brothers and you.

Spear gives a shiver and falls to his knees, hands planted firmly on the stone, eyes squeezed closed and trembling as if he'd just seen a ghost. His spear rolls off the edge. Emma's spell!

The three look at you, ignoring Spear's minor fit. You feel a small hand on the small of your back, and the brush of a tail against your leg as Emma sneaks to your side.

"Well, we goblins! Proud! Strong! Many-many!"

You wag gently. Hey! They sound like kobolds! But... greener. And crazier. And they don't talk as nice.

"Then is mama a goblin too? She doesn't sound very nice..."

Dagger shakes his head, but cowers and raises his hands defensively when Pick pulls back his hand to slap him. Ice-Axe growls at the both of them. "Enough! Had it wit you two idiots." He turns back to you and steps forward. You feel Emma sneak your dagger out of its sheathe again.

"Listen, money or no, me gotta have somethin'. So you come with us, give pack to mama. Then you can meet her, she answer questions." Ice-Axe nods as if the matter's settled, turning his back to you and motioning his brothers back into the cave. >>40412007
You shake your head and you see the dagger fade under the wavy pattern of illusion that covers Emma's dress. Spear crawls along behind you, whimpering about falling until he reaches the confines of the cave, hugging the floor gratefully. You risk a look back for Djanna, but don't see the dragon girl, illusion-covered or no. You hope she has the good sense to follow you.

The goblins take you deeper into the tunnels, leaving the main and taking a long, winding, criss-crossing path that you're sure moves through the same tunnel more the once. You whine softly, feeling Emma tighten her grip on your coat. You get the feeling the route is chosen to confuse visitors and disguise the path to their home. In the span of a few minutes, you're mostly lost, but you're sure you could follow the scent of the fresh air and, maybe, the stink of the goblins to get back. Then again, the myriad of scents that become apparant the closer you get to their den makes you wonder if you'll ever smell anything again.

Rich incenses, perfumes, sandalwood and lavendar fill your nostrils, making you snort. They're old, their odors faded, but still. They're piled up haphazardly in the den, surrounding a curtain drawn across a small inner cave, lit by lamplight. Wait, no. That's sunlgiht! You must be along the outer wall of a cavern! That would make it easier to find your way out! Maybe! You don't know, you're just so glad to see sunlight again so soon after that long, stupid run to get here!
>>
>>40412513
You see a shape silhouetted against the curtain, short and slender, with no discernible features. You hear a nasally, imperious voice lash out like a whip.

"Are you idiots back already? Did you get their stuff!? It had better have been good!"

Dagger whimpers and cowers behind Pick, looking every bit like a whipped dog. Pick doesn't speak, nor chastise his brother, as Ice-Axe nudges you forward with the flat end of his weapon. "Go on. Introduce self."

"Hi, I'm Nadia!" You bound forward and toss back the curtain, revealing a skinny slip of a girl with pale blue skin, a pair of backward-sweeping horns, and long black hair clad in sleek black leather armor. A pair of daggers hang at her side, as well as a couple glass bottles hanging loosely from loops on her belt. She blinks at you, the goblins gasping as you have the audacity to go into mama's room. The girl glares up at you.

"Well, 'Nadia,' who the hell do you think you are barging into my home? And why are you- why does she still have her stuff!?" she shouts to the goblins behind you, storming out under your arm and moving past the piles of aromatics. She groans lightly and holds her nose, red-irised eyes narrowed. The goblins recoil, Dagger's eyes wide as saucers as he looks at the vials on her belt.

"Hey, I didn't barge in! They brought me! And you should be nicer to cubs, anyway! What's the big idea, ambushing my f- me, and trying to rob me!?" You grab the girl by the shoulder and spin her to face you. She puts her hand on her hip and looks up at you, still holding her nose.

"Who the hell said you could use my mountain without paying the traveller's tax? And you!" She looks back at the goblins, and her demeanor changes in an instant, all smiles and sweetness. Her voice carries a lethal, poisonous threat. "I'll deal with you darlings later."

"VOICE! VOICE! VOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOICE!" Dagger runs screaming into the depths, Pick and Ice-Axe chasing off after him pell-mell. The blue girl shakes her head.

"Idiots. So. You going to give up that pack, or do I take it from you?"

"Hm? Neither. It's my stuff and I'm gonna keep it."

"Why are you bullying cubs, anyway? You smell pretty young yourself."

She pauses, stricken. "Ex... cuse me?"

"And what's a tax? Is that like money?"

"Yes, that's exactly it. Now, if-"

"Because if it's money, I don't have any. Uncle Garush says I'm too young to handle it. Do you know him?"

"What? Who? How the hell would I-"

"Oh, and who gave you the mountain anyway? And why did the goblins call you Voice? Do you talk to gods too?"

"Do I what!? What kind of ridiculous, rock-headed question-"

"My mom called herself Voice, but she got scary an' I had to leave. I don't like that, but not all the gods seem bad. I met a dragon named Gold- er, Tyrunt. Yeah, Tyrunt. He seemed all right."

"Were you born slow or someth-"

"But, why are you here anyway? You live in a cave? I used to live in a cave! Don't you get cold? It's so high up!"

"ENOUGH!" The girl slid the daggers from their sheaths and moved to lunge at you.

You leapt back in surprise. "Emma!"

Your dagger slid into view from under the fox-girl's dress, the illusion fading as she lunged with a wavering war cry. The blue girl spun, Emma's weapon missing her by mere inches as she drove the pommel of one of her own into the back of the fox-girl's head, knocking her face-down into the cave floor.

Emma squealed in pain, dropping your dagger and grabbing her head. The blue girl pulls back to deliver the killing blow, a gleeful look of malice on her face.

You dash forward and skid to a stop in front of the girl, grabbing her wrist and glaring down at her as you tighten your grip. You shake your head as she snarls, trying to slash against your stomach. You use her momentum to spin her about, trapping her with one arm crossed in front of her, forcing the other into the small of her back. Emma whines, but you hear her rise behind you, muttering about her head.

The little girl howls in rage, trying to jerk herself out of your grip, but you're easily stronger than she is. With a hiss, you feel something brush against your leg. You chance a look down, and is that a tail!? You see something long and slender, like Djanna's but a lot thinner, and covered in skin the same hue as the girl's in stead of scales, snake out from under her armor, catch one of the vials from her belt, and rip it from the loop. You try to force it against her but it's too late. She fumbles with it, tail pressed against her body as it is, and it falls to the ground right at her feet. A rose-perfumed cloud of smoke rises from the broken vial, and you hear Emma cry out in shock and pain, as she probably took some of right in the eyes, but as soon as the smoke puffed up from the ground you snapped your eyes shut and held your breath. You'd been in the mines only a week or so, but your relatives had told you about gas deposits before, and the number of lives they'd taken.

The girl herself shudders in your arms, coughing violently and wretching. Soon enough she falls still, either having knocked herself out with the cloud or just lost the will to fight. Either way, you're not sure you care. In the distance, you hear Emma calling for you loudly.

Sounds good.

So is this lady an Imp or other kind of demon? Maybe half goblin?
>>
>>40414081
Whatever she is, its our divine duty to save her, or whatever. This is pretty much just an excuse to justify us not murdering her. Hell, we can pretend shes a goblin child and use that whole debate.
>>
>>40413874
You whine and back your way out of the cloud, leaning back and coughing as you drop the girl. You howl softly, and Djanna calls out after it. You take a deep breath, diving back into the cloud once more to tear down the curtain and grab Emma, dragging both out. You quickly mummify the blue girl in blue drapery as both she and Emma cough desperately, sucking in air.

"Djanna! Follow the smell! If it smells horribly overpowering, it's us! I mean, not that we stink! I mean, you know Emma smells pretty strongly, but this is worse than that! Not that she's bad, I m-"

"...up. Seriously... shut..." Emma's chastisement is interrupted by another hacking fit. You whimper and thump her lightly on the back with a massive paw. You hear the blue girl starting to strain against her bindings, but a quick knock to the noggin' puts her right back under. Soon enough, Djanna joins you, and after a quick reunion and bringing the dragon up to speed, you stand surrounding the girl. Emma's tails and ears twitch, and yours sways about slowly. You feel like you're never going to get the stink out of your fur now.

"So... what do we do with her?" Djanna asks, nudging her with a foot.

"She was gonna stab me. Throw her off the mountainside and be done with it."

"WAAAAAAIT!"

Dagger creeps back into view. When the three of you turn to him, he pulls his dagger from his belt - sheath and all - and lays it on the floor before raising his hands.

"Please! No hurt mama. She... she mean-mean, but she no mean it! She just... just..."

The goblin seems to be trying desperately to come to the girl's defense, but can't find the words. Or maybe she's got no redeeming qualities after all. You look down at her with a frown, then back to Dagger. The goblin wrings his hands desperately, shifting from foot to foot.

She groans softly and doesn't stir. Emma's eyes fall on her tail and she wrinkles her nose. She grabs it and the girl trembles in her bindings. When Emma sinks her pointy little teeth into it, the blue girl jerks awake and cries out in pain. "WHAT THE FUCK WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT!?"

"You tried to stab me. We're even." The two glare at one-another before the blue girl whips her tail out of Emma's hands and holds it above her eyes, frowning. "Going to have scars, little..."

She looks between you, Emma, and then up at Djanna as you lean over her. "Well, you got me. I suppose you killed the rest of my crew to. Monsters. Breaking in here to steal our stuff, huh? Doesn't surprise me, you're dressed like humans. Might as well act like 'em too. Nothin' more than pets, that's all you are. You frown softly and plant your foot on her chest, forcing her to let out her breath in a whoosh of air. "First off, we didn't kill anyone. I'm not that mean. Second, you should be nicer. Your little goblin friend asked me really nicely not to hurt you, so I'm not gonna. Next, why are you tryin' to rob us? It's not nice. You're not very nice."

She glowered up at you, trying to speak but finding herself unable to inhale. You pull your leg back and she sucks in a breath. "What the hell are you made out of, rocks? You weigh a tOW!" Emma has grabbed her tail again and is pinching the tip. The girl whips it about, trying to free it, but Emma just gives it another pinch, glaring down at the blue girl. "OKAY! I'm sorry, all right! Fine, I'll talk! Damn..."

She looks between the three of you and tries to wriggle out of her bindings. Finding that impossible, she grumbles and remains where she lays. "My name's Maya, an' I'm a demon. These goblins found me months ago, wandering around naked and mindless. I don't know what happened before that, but all I remember is that the first thing I could remember is thinking that they stank to high heaven. We lived by robbing travellers and the few settlements to the east of the Skyteeth, taking supplies as we needed." You frown, but let her finish. People tend to get irritated when you interrupt for some reason, even though you're really curious and the best way to find out things is to ask questions and wow, shut up brain.

"Is that why you're wearing clothes? Did somebody from the east make you a pet too? By the way, what's a pet?"

She practically bristles at this, glaring. "It's armor! Haven't you ever seen armor before!? I'm not sturdy like these rockheaded goblins, so I have to make up for it! Say what you want about humans, they have some pretty ingenious inventions. As for a pet, it's a lesser creature you keep around for entertainment. You really didn't know this?"

"Well, I'm only about three weeks old..."
>>
>>40414839
The demoness looks up at you in disbelief. "You're huge!"

You control your tail as best you can, clearing your throat and proceeding.

"Why are you so mean to them? They saved you, didn't they?"

She glares daggers at you and opens her mouth to reply, yelping when Emma flicks the tip of her tail again. "I'm getting to it, damn it! Yes, they saved me! And yeah, I guess I'm sort of grateful for it, but they don't know their left from their right, ya know? If I wasn't hard on 'em, they wouldn't have anywhere near what they do now! They were eating leather when they found me! LEATHER! Now they got enough meat for winter and then some just hung up in the caves below! I may not be nice, but damn it, nice doesn't fill bellies!"

Your stomach growls as if on cue, and Dagger flinches back, thinking it was you. He'd been creeping closer to where you were interrogating Maya, but scuttled backward almost out of the cave.

"Still, you tried to hurt Emma. That... that was mean. I woulda..."

"Yeah, so you woulda killed me. So what? We all have to die sometime, eh? And what, she didn't try and stab me first? Oh, but that's different, since she's with you, huh? Tsk... typical human thinking..."

Well, damn. Even Emma looks a bit shamed there, but she snaps her fingers and points down at the demon. "You pulled your daggers on Nadia, though! You were going to-"

"Try and get her to drop her pack and run! God, do you think I'm dumb enough to attack something built like a statue with a couple of pig stickers!?" She thrashes her tail angrily, finally loosening it from Emma's grip.

You nod and reach down, slipping a hand into the curtain and rummaging about. The girl's blue cheeks turn purple as she squirms away from your hand. "What do you think you're doing!?"

You find what you're looking for, though, and pluck it off her armor, pulling the glass vial out and holding it aloft to the dwindling sunlight streaming through her little window. "What's this stuff, anyway? It smelled terrible and it kind of burns my skin."

"Concentrate of sandalwood and rose oil, combined with wisp breath and fogweed. It's a potent stink bomb." The demoness eyes you warily as you turn the vial about in your hand, considering the semi-clear liquid carefully.

"Did you make it yourself?"

She nods slowly, hesitantly. "Yeah. The goblins are really handy with herbs and such. They taught me a little bit. Why do you ask?"

You're not sure. You consider the vial, looking over at Djanna, then back to the vial, and decide to table the issue for the moment. You look back down at the girl with a gentle nudge of your foot. "You ought to find a better way to feed the goblins. What are you going to do if you try to rob somebody meaner than I am? Or bigger, or stronger? What if they came here and found your warren? It has to happen at some point." You frown and reach out to untie her. Emma and Djanna both object.

Maya doesn't respond as she rises to her feet once free, rubbing the feeling back into her extremities. "When it happens, I guess we'll find out. The boys and I have an understanding. No prisoners, no ransom, no mercy. It's the best way for our kind to thrive in this world."

Shes as young as us, she just is arrogant enough that she assumed if the goblins and her didn't know another way of life, there probably wasn't one. Dude, Close Combat/grapple is great in closed spaces like the caverns we go through. If we need weapons we can pick up weapons expertise along the way.
which weapon though... spear?
Something like spear or naginatas should fit in the vibe of 'female artisan', I guess.

We're never using an actual weapon, our claws are the only thing we need. Hell, we've pretty much specced into that at this point.

>>

We might need something stronger (as in literally made of stronger material than keratin) for heavy-armour enemies, though.

I'd suggest some kind of cestus or punch-knife, or the gauntlets that Shezka has in Monster.
>>
>>40415581

We just need to sell her on how amazingly important merchants are. She has an inferiority complex, so pointing out how successful, well respected, and influential merchants are should sell her ego easily.

That aside. Steps in a plan for them:
> Repair the lanterns and keep them lit.
Doing so will drive people more readily down their path toward what will probably become their trading post
> Prepare some samples that we can drop off in the next town over
Free advertising never hurt
> Get the goblins dressed
Nudity makes everyone uncomfortable
> Get a little bit of advice from our dragoness on the prices associated with certain goods
Because what is money and equivalent trade value?

>>
>>40415875
>Also it doesn't suit a cave dweller to use a spear to begin with.
Again, our fists.
The reason I'm proposing speares is to counter enemies that we don't want to get close, when it's fine to go toe to toe with them we can use our holy claws all we like.
being a one trick pony is not very useful.
>>
>>40415875
>Because its such a common and unneeded gimmick that I'm tired of it.
Also, what does other quest have to do with this quest?
Wait, then what weapon do you want to use, for what reason (advantage)? Again, using only fists expose us to a lot of danger in open space combat.
>>
>>40415875

Spears are useful for things otherwise equipped to engage in close combat. They are a strong choice in a primitive setting that still has the chance of fighting things covered in: poison, acid, molten metal, spikes, etc to name just a few.

Granted, we can pick a different weapon, but for the love of Christ, propose something different that's equally good then try to win people over rather than just complaining.

Any polearm will do, but we must be /fit/ first to use bigger sticks.
Using something like pic related gives us a lot of versatility but we would need more beef to use it for now.

Also, keep in mind that the reason polearms were widely used was because it was easy to use.
why would all the levies use the spear? Because all tou needed to learn was to stand in formation, point, and thrust/brace for impact.
>>
As someone who usually supports the use of spears I'm fine with sticking to Monk Bold.
>>
What about a flail? we're pretty damn strong, they have decent range and they hit like a battering ram.
>>
>>40416379
Main characters never use flails for some reason. It's always a big baddie weapon. I say we bring the flail the love it deserves.
>>
>>40416410
Because it's notoriously hard to use
>>
>>40416379
But speares are longer.
hell, I would have proposed using pike if it wasn't so unwieldy than the spear.
the entire point of this weapons discussion is to give us the ability to strike from range, not damage (because fitbold is gonna be stronk)
>>

>>
>>40416410

>>
>>40416457
>lucerne hammer
That looks similar to what I posted on >>40416301.
Can we put it on a longer stick though? Google search shows me that they aren't really that long.
>>
>>40416410

Flails are rather difficult to use effectively. They require wide sweeping motions to build up momentum, making them largely useless in indoor areas, and are heavy and ungainly besides.

The main reason they're stereotyped as villain weapons is that they're often spiked (and spike=evil) and because they're chained/loose weapons, which evokes 'whip' imagery. Plus their heaviness and requirement for large motion, as above, makes them more suited for the larger, more forboding characters, which villians often fit, as well as serving as a counterpoint for the often lighter, swifter swords that heroes favour.
>>
>>40416512
eh, they're about as long as a boar spear, which are really as long as you want to get without it being unwieldy. it certainly outranges a sword or axe.
>>
>>40416534
I would think nadia is strong enough to handle one, with sufficient training she could become quite deadly, and for use indoors we always have our brawling skills and maybe another weapon. it might be rather limited as to when we use it but it'd put just about anything out of the fight with only 2-3 hits.

"What do you get out of this? Nobody does anything for free, especially given I did just try to rob you blind."

"She tried. To. Stab. Me."

"Emma, shh." You pull her against you, her back against your legs, your arms around her shoulders. Her tail thrashes angrily, ears folded down.

"Besides, Garush needs somebody to look after. I'd bet he's still camped just out of eyeshot of the caves, fretting over us like an old auntie." You laugh softly, shaking your head. "He really worries too much."

"So... you're really offering to help me just because... what, it's the nice thing to do? You think I need it?" She glares up at you. Dagger winces and grips her belt.

You tilt your head the other way, ears flopping to the side. "Don't you?"

She doesn't respond, simply looking anywhere but at you and putting her fists on her hips. "...all right. Fine. I... thanks. I guess. Whatever keeps us fed, I suppose." You're pretty sure that's as close to appreciation as you're going to get. You smile, tail wagging. You can practically feel Emma's wrath focused on the demon girl as the kitsune rests against you. Djanna just seems at a loss.

"I... what did I miss, anyway?" You fill in your sister quickly, and she looks horrified that she wasn't here to help. She looks like she wants to attack Maya as well, but you talk her out of it.

You consider this for a moment, then shake your head. "You have a point. Tell you what, we're heading through the Skyteeth to go train for a while on the other side. Why don't you come with us?"

She considers this for a moment, then shakes her head. "I'd rather not. I'm pretty sure if my boys and I got caught on the other side of the mountains, we'd be beaten to death before anyone so much as said hello. Besides, if what you said about people paying a lot of coin for my stuff was true, I kind of want to brew some up to take with us."

"Us?" Djanna asks, leaning against a wall. Ice-Axe and Pick have since crept back up from the depths as well.

"I'm not leaving my boys behind. Poor morons would probably die without me."

Your tail goes from zero to full wag in no time at all. There's a veneer of snark in her voice, but under it the barest hint of affection. Itty-bitty, but it is there! You want to hug her, but you feel Emma reach up and put her arms around yours, in no uncertain terms sending the message that you are her sister, nobody else's, and if you hug the demon bitch she will end up down a well.

"Then, I guess that's that." Emma growls, eyes narrowed and ears twitching. "So I guess we'll stop back for you on the way through the 'Teeth. For now, how about showing us the way out?"

"Anything to get you the hell out of my house, cat."

"Oh you did not just-"

You scoop Emma up under one arm, and she practically hisses and spits like you'd dunked her, but soon enough calms as you run a hand over her hair, whispering soothingly to her how it's okay and you're here and nothing's going to get her and so on, so forth. Finally she relaxes, becoming somewhat floppy in your grip. The demon girl leads you through the caverns, taking a more direct route than the one that lead you here. Several hours later, the sun has set, and you are at the base of the mountains on the other side, Maya bidding you farewell, flanked by her goblin cohorts.

Alright, so maybe that's just MY fetish. Still not a good enough reason.

I have actually been trained by years of media to find the possibility of a relationship more attractive than a relationship itself. All about that unrequited lust.

Although she did say we were huge.

"All right. When you come back in the mountains, just head left at the first fork, and when you come to the second, whistle. One of these idiots will come get you. Listen, no hard feelings, all right? Girl's gotta do what she can, right?"

You shake your head, arms crossed. "You're still kind of mean, and stealing is bad." You think back to Bertrand, and the brothers, and growl softly. "But, if you had a good reason, I suppose I can forgive it. Still, no more! You can live a better way, an' we're gonna make sure you don't have to steal again. All right?"

She just shrugs and turns, shooing the goblins before her. "C'mon, idiots, back to the house! You lot stink and I want to get back to my room!" Soon enough, they're gone.

Emma whines softly. "Why the hell did you offer to help her? She was all wrapped up! Off the side of the mountain, problem solved!" You just pat her head softly and she grumbles, ears and tails twitching.

"Well, we should probably make camp tonight. I don't want to be out in the open..." Djanna mutters, looking about. In the distance, you hear the high-pitched scream of a bird of prey. It sounds utterly massive. In the distance, you see lights as if from a village.

> Make camp
> People do bad things when they think there isn't a choice, Emma.
> Like Maya, the Czar, or Mama...
> We can't let them keep hurting people, but hurting people so that people aren't hurt isn't good either.
