I am Shinra, history professor of the prestigious University of St. Ivalice. Have you ever heard of the Five Lions War? Likely not, the Middle Ages of Ivalice has long been lost in the annals in the history. Indeed, it is why we call them the Dark Ages and historians today know very little about the age of swords and magic.

But I have recently uncovered a long lost tome, buried deep beneath the city of Lesalia. In it is a tale of adventures, politics, demons that brought a plague to the land, and a young man never mentioned in history. Some may question the authenticity of such a fanciful tale... But there is a lingering force in me that believes it to be true.

Would you care to explore this tale with me?

You take out the piece of parchment from your knapsack and glance at the contents one more. Written in fancy golden printing, the gaudy thing almost seems out of place considering the state of Ivalice.

“By order of his royal majesty, King Desmond, and her royal highness, Queen Selene, you are hereby ordered to serve your country by joining his majesty's troops in repelling the Ordalian and Romandan invasion. Those who serve well will be faithfully rewarded with land and money; those who fail or refuse to show face shall be condemned with treason. Let it be known that it is the duty of all faithful Ivalician subjects to give their lives in the face trying times.

Serve well. Serve God, country, and the royal family.

-Signed,
Selene Heiral, Queen of Ivalice”

Putting away the piece of paper, you glance at the destination before you. You piece together what has led you here so far; you have been ordered to join the Ivalice troops in pushing back the Oradlian and Romandan invasions. You are Zaren Aphelion, son and minor noble of no prestige or fame, twenty years of age. Just as your parents passed away With no choice left to you, you left your home to do your duties.

While you have no experience in actual battle, your past time training might just help you survive this war. You have trained from an early age...
>to be a knight, chivalry and honor, front line tanks on the field of battle
>an archer, eagle-eyed men who pick off enemies from a distance
>a chemist, alchemist masters who use items to gain superiority
>a wizard, trained in black magic to vanquish your foes

All of your life the wonders of the natural world and what you can make from them has interested you. You've read books in your spare time and experimented with basic brewing. You know how to make simple concoctions, from healing potions, to small drug-enhancements.

-------

You are currently a level 3 Chemist. Your job expertise is rated as follows:

1 (Noobie/Unknown) → 2 (Basic) → 3 (Adept) → 4 (Skilled) → 5 (Master)

Job levels will increase as you fight, train, learn, take on quests, etc. Reaching level 5 will take work and effort as it is considered the best of the best.

You are free to change a job any time. Be reasonable with the class you are playing; if you're currently a level 2 (Basic) Time Mage, don't expect to blow away a contingent of enemies with Meteor. Don't expect the Haste spell to quadruple your ally's speed or be constantly using your spells without getting tired and running out of mana. If you have questions on using a spell/skill, if you can use, if it will take much energy, how much effect it will case, just ask. But again, simply delve in the area of being reasonable and there shouldn't be problems.

The functionality of jobs shall be much more versatile here; if you train well as a Black Mage, Knight, and Archer, you can be an armor smashing and magic wielding warrior who also uses a bow at the side.

Being high leveled in a class will also give roleplay benefits. A Thief can pickpocket locks, a Mediator negotiates better, Chemists can brew special alchemist potions, etc.

--------

Your stats are as follows out of 10:
Constitution: 2 (Physical prowess, strength, agility)
Magic: 2 (Ability to conjure powerful and longer-lasting spells)
Intelligence: 3 ( Finding out information, knowledge of general things)
Charisma: 3 (Speaking ability, attractiveness, getting others to do your bidding)

3 is considered average. 10 is considered a heroic, legendary level. Stats increase like jobs; simply playing, training, accomplishing things.

You look at the city before you. Walls of strong fifty feet stone, towers manned by archers, and knights of the royal capital in their silver gleaming armor. At the center a large gate where travelers are stopped by soldiers before being allowed in. Beyond the gate and walls are tall buildings and statues of heroes and saints carved in marble. Even at the small hill where you are standing, you can hear the bustle and talk of citizens and merchants. The royal capital of Lesalia is truly magnificent.

...It is unlike the rest of Ivalice. Currently under invasion by Ordalia, villages and farms have been plundered. Bandits roam the countryside, the strong and young have been conscripted to serve the army, discontent is wide spread. It has only been around a hundred years since King Delita Heiral brought peace back to the land. King Delita was strong, tactful, and brought justice to Ivalice, but his descendants have proven to be weak. The time of prosperity and peace has ended with the eastern kingdom of Ordalia attacking Ivalice once again. There has been a stalemate for a couple of years, but recently Ordalia has pushed back the Ivalice forces back and have taken land. Worse yet the country of Romanda, a landmass to the north have also taken advantage of the situation and landed in Fovoham.

>A Thief can pickpocket locks
That's impressive. I didn't know locks even HAD pockets!
>>
>>40411583
You pass by the gate easily once you show the letter of summons to the guards. The bustling city of Lesalia is ripe with gossip and talk, and inside you can see that capital is even more rich and polished. As you make your way through the stone-carved streets, you overhear a group of nobles talking.

“First Ordalia, and now Romanda as well? What is to become of our city? Will the capital too come under siege?”

“Nonsense, Yardow city still stands. There's no way Romanda can push this face in. The Ordalians still have a long way to trek towards the capital in the eastern front. I bet the bastards will run of of food soon.”

“I hear our troops haven't been faring well. King Desmond won't even lift a finger to help and just sits in bed all day. When he is at court he remains bored and uncaring. Is it not the duty of a king to lead the troops to victory?”

The unpopularity of the royal family is quite clear. As someone just joining the army, do you have something to say to these nobles?

>Agree with them; Ivalice is in dire straits
>Chastise them for speaking ill in the capital city

“Indeed...” you say joining in on the conversation, your knapsack over your shoulder. “Peasants being conscripted, the youngest of the nobles forced to join the front. I fear we are seeing another Fifty Years War,” you state with a shake of your head.

“Am I to be to correct in thinking you are joining the royal troops, young one?” one of the man asks.

“Aye. Zaren Aphelion, sole son of the Aphelion family so I am to be one to faithfully serve Ivalice and die in her honor. Likely going to serve as a support unit; so I might just survive yet.”

“God be with you, young Zaren,” one of the other noble says with a shake of his head. “My daughter was conscripted as a squire and serving as fresh troops in the north. I can only pray she return.”

You chat only a bit with the nobles, agreeing that the current affairs are dire. When a few knights come patrolling about the nobles quickly silence themselves and you bid farewell to the nobles with a nod. As of now your loyalty to the royal family and administration is questionable, but best keep that to yourself.

Your move on the castle going through the merchant districts first, then a few housing areas, and finally up a hill pass a few barricades. You come before a courtyard filled with peasants lined up at the front. Many of them look frightened and unwilling to be there. Likely the men and women forced in to service; else wise they would not even be allowed near the castle. The knights attending to them look equally disgruntled; most of them nobles who do not wish to consort with the lowly lot.

As a young noble you are allowed in the castle past the smell and filth.

The interior of the castle is grand and humungous. The colors of the floor and walls are golden. Portraits and tapestries line the halls, vases and knightly armor decorations, rich velvet carpets on the floors. You followed through a few halls where the knights direct you to an office. You enter the office and before you is a well-dressed men sitting at a table, scribbling with a quill. When he hears you enter he looks at you and crosses his legs. He bids you to sit and explain why you are here.

“Ahh, a noble lad, a chance to earn some name and prestige,” he says after you present your letter. “Zaren Aphelion is it? Where are you from sir and pray tell what you expect here,” he says with an elegant smile.

You are from...

Fovoham: Northern region with lots of farmlands and temperate weather
Lionel: Southern rich region where trade from the eastern lands happens
Limberry: Eastern region where many famous knights come from and home of chivalry
Gallione: Western region, the land of magic and famous magic city of Gariland
Lesalia: The central region where the royal capital resides and most populous

"From Gallione, Sire. I hail from a relatively large village just south of the magick city and about an hour away."

"Lucky then," the man replies. "Gallione remains rather untouched by the current predicament. I wonder how a man of your situation thinks of serving here then?"

"It is the duty of all men and women to save Ivalice. My land may yet to be touched by the flames of war but that could all change. Besides, the suffering and plight of the rest of the country are still a concern of mine. When foreigners are taking our land and pillaging our villages... Well, one cannot just stand by and watch," you state crossing your arms.

"Indeed, correct you are Sir Aphelion," the noble man replies with a wry smile and a tone implicating that you two are simply speaking formalities and customs, perhaps not true words of the heart. "It is fortunate to know one of your sensibilities will be proving service. What skills do you have to offer?"

"I am a chemist, Sire. I cannot say I am much at fighting but give me the wounded and sickly and let me tend to them. If supplies are ever dwindling let me be tasked with foraging the land."

"Thousands are wounded and supplies do come short in the years," the man replies with a nod. "Very well, let's have you join..." he goes through his papers. "...Strident team. They could use a chemist. In fact you can save me the trouble of running a messenger to tell them what front they serve. Why don't I let you choose? Would you go to the north against the Romandans, or east against the Ordalians?"

"Let me serve in the north" you say after a few seconds of thought and rubbing your chin. "The Ordalians are tired at the eastern front and a fresh push back may break them yet. However, these Romandans have just arrived and I fear their distance to the capital."

"Very well," the noble says with a quick sharp etching on a paper. "Go out to the northern gate and join the camps prepared outside the city. Find Strident team and inform them you are to head north the morrow."

You nod and bow to the man as you stand. You look at the man's features: semi-long brown hair groomed back. Sharp nose, some hollow eyes, a man in his thirties. Some would say handsome.

"Before I take my leave, could I have your name Sire?"

"Count Luanda," he replies. "It would serve you well to remember me should you ever wish to rise. As for you, you are but one of a hundred nobles I have met. Make a name for yourself Aphelion so that your name does no vanish from my memories."

And with that you give another bow and leave the room. The game of politics and raising your family name... Perhaps you should pursue it at some point. But for now, the war.

With the matter of your recruitment done you make yourself out of the castle and to the northern gate as instructed. As you pass by you hear a shout.

“Please, I beg you, I need to feed my family! I'm the only strong man of my farm and I cannot join the war!”

“Stow it!”

The soldier strikes the peasant begging him at his feet with the blunt end of his spear. You hear cries and wailing, soldiers telling the lot at front to keep quiet. With a shake of your head you leave.

When you come out of the northern gate you see a large encampment before you. Pitched camps where soldiers are drilling about, some around a fire, others chatting. You think there are about a thousand gathered here. From the looks of some men and women that have steel and others who have but rags and leather, it seems the nobles and peasants are being put together.

You ask around the camp for Strident team, most of the people having no clue and keeping to themselves. Only one blonde man sitting near his tent seems dutiful enough to know things around the camp and gives you directions to a tent. You thank him and set onward.

When you reach your tent you can hear some shouts and argument. You move the tent flaps and enter to see a man in armor and a woman in red clothing arguing.

“What I am demanding to know is why I am put in here with you lot! I am of a noble family; for what reason am I here with common folk!?”

“And I'm telling you I have no fucking clue and to shut it! You can sleep outside in the cold for all I care, my 'noble esteemed lady.'”

To the side you can see two other women watching the man in armor and woman in red fight. One of the onlookers is a fiery redhead who looks with amusement; the other is a blonde woman in robes who watches in a sullen bored manner.

What should you do?

"Funny, I did not know we were already engaging the Romandans right at the front of the capital," you say taking a mere glance at the two people fighting and instead walking to the other women.

"You put a prickly noble and a foul-mouthed man together and you get a nice little brew," the red-haired one says with a laugh and shrug. The girl is dressed in light clothing, hardly any armor. You see a dagger tied to her waist.

"Aye, I would know about brews. Zaren Aphelion, new chemist. I presume this is Strident squad?"

"Yes, and you mentioned Romandans," the blonde woman says coming forward, staff on her left hand. A white mage if her white clothing and staff are evidence enough "Am I to be in correct in assuming we will head north?"

"On the very morrow," you say with a nod and producing your letter.

Your announcement puts a hold on the other two arguing as they stop their shouting and look at you. You smile and are glad and look back.

"Caught your attention? We leave heading northwards at morning. We aim to go to Yardow Fort City and join our troops there in repelling Romanda."

The woman in red, her clothes velvet and to her side a rapier looks at your from head to toe. With a frown she speaks haughtily.

"And are you too another commoner? What rubbish this is that they put all of us together in one tent."

"Indeed, what rubbish it is that I as a servant of God must deal with pig-headed nobles," the blonde priest says looking sideways with a cold demeanor. It seems the priest has finally tired of the red lady. The armored man only chortles in laughter, seemingly glad to have someone on his side now.

"What did you say!?" the red lady shouts.

"Aye, aye, we can all kill each other when we actually get to battle. I for one am hoping I won't be forced to choose between who to heal when the happens. Why don't we all start over? Starting with introductions perhaps?"

The red velvet lady backs off with a grit of her teeth and a cross of her arms. The others all look at each other, now quite apparent the five of you have no idea who each others are. After a few seconds of silence, the armored man steps forwards and speaks.

"Guess I'll start then, eh?" he says. The man is black-haired, muscular, and his hair tied to a ponytail knot at the back. Rustic black tints adorn his white armor giving him the look of a ruffian. Probably why he wasn't getting along with the lady.

"Rickard Suthers from the village of Scale Hills of Lionel. From the looks of you lot you all look weak and bones. I'll take the front of our battles just be sure to support me," he says bringing up a spear. A lancer, it seems.

"Annette Gelvanne," the red-velvet lady says with a disdainful glance at Rickard. "I am trained in magic, swordsmanship, and even the bow. I'll have more use than this one." Rickard snorts.

"Helena Grant of the Galbados Church," the blonde priest says. "Here by orders of the Church to aid the war effort. I know a little of war magic as well, but I would advise relying on me to torch your enemies."

"Iri Meister!" the final woman, the red-haired lady says pointing to fingers to her face with a bright smile. "I know a little bit about fighting, but I'd say leave me the out the vanguard. Get someone distracted and I might find myself an opportunity. Also, if you see any chests and loot let me go at it. I am good with a lock."

"So a thief..." Annette says with a sigh.

"Such a harsh word! I would rather be thought of a rouge!"

"What difference is that!?"

You glance at each of your companions, then introduce yourself.

"Zaren Aphelion, chemist. Not much useful in fighting but let me support from the back. Any wounds, ailments you have let me have a look along with Helena. And also..."

You produce from your pocket a small fashioned mechanism. A shaft on one end, a long pointed barrel on the other, silver and small. A small gift you were given when a merchant stopped by your manor.

"I can shoot an enemy or two with this, but the thing is rather difficult to load. Provide me with some cover and I might be more useful at the front. If things prove difficult... Well, I guess I'll use my knife as well.”

“IS THAT A GUN!? OHHH, OHH, LET ME SEE!” the thief says coming full blast towards you. You make sure Iri gives back your gun as the newly formed Stident team prepares for the morning.

----------------------

As soon as light comes, you along with Strident squad leave the camp and make your way northwards as was planned. The road begins to stray away from the stones to dirt and rocks. You travel for a few hours, making small stops here and there. Rickard and Annette scorn each other while Helena keeps to herself and Iri goes around merrily. You pass a few villages and farmlands, some of the common folk greeting you and pleading you not to let the Romandans through. The journey is rather tiring ad your constitution is rather not fit. It seems you are having the most trouble with the long walk, even more than Helena who you expected would be tired as you but seems unphased.

You decide to have a chat with Helena, considering both of you are the supports of this unit. Unlike the other three she seems the most quiet. A sign of mistrust, scheming, or just plain maturity? You slow your pace to walk besides Helena who was on the rear of the formation.

"So what does a priest of the Church think about heading to war?" you start as you match paces with the woman. "Can't be comfortable leaving the monasteries in to camps and battle, no?"

"The high order commands in the name of God and I obey," Helena replies simply.

"Don't fear death?" you ask.

"Not much so after the things I've been through," she says. You raise a brow, wondering what she means by that but she makes no further explanation. "I would rather be in a less noisy company... With a rather less questionable group. But complaining as our Lady Annette would do won't change anything, will it?"

"Rightly so," you say with a nod.

Before you make further conversion the unit comes to a halt. Your brows narrow at the front where it seems the group has encounters others. You make your way to the front.

"What do we have here? A bunch of kids wandering about. Headed to the north are we? Why don't we take some of your things to help you ease the journey!" a man in rags with a rusty sword says.

You are confronted by what seems to be brigands. Eight of them it seems, in rags, a few with only meager arms. A lot of them are bones and looking at you with hungry eyes.

Rickard at the front spits on the ground.

"Going to be a fight is it? Good, I've been itchin' for one. Come on your rotting fucks, make my day."

On the side you can see Annette place her hand on her rapier. Iri's cheerful face takes a serious note as she arches her legs and looks at the enemy lot. Helena walks behind and stays there, seemingly knowing her place as a support.

No need to try and negotiate with these lot. You know better than to try and appease bandits and common thugs, and what would people say about your unit should you give in to criminals? You take out your gun and blast the man who was demanding his loot in front of you.

A scream goes out as you manage to put a bullet in his shoulder. The brigands are surprised and stunned for a few seconds, but your lancer is not. As if expecting the first blood to be drawn, Rickon rushes forward and stabs his spear through the chest of the stunned bandit you shot. With a blood curdling gasp the man goes down.

In anger the other brigands rush forward and Rickon goes to meet them. You quickly dash backwards as you reload your weapon. Annette and Iri meet the foes as well, facing two of the brigands each while Rickon seems to be taking on three. The lancer swings his spear in a wild arc as he fends the brigands off while Iri clashes with the bandits in swift movement. Annette parries blows from her enemies and manages to make a slash wound on a shirtless ruffian.

If what Annette brags about being a trained swordsman is correct, she could handle herself. Rickson seems the tough sort and with his armor you are certain he can fend for himself. That leaves the little thief.

You aim your gun and attempt to find a shot. Iri is swift and agile, nimbly dodging the enemy attacks and parrying a few with her dagger. She manages to duck under one blow and slice one of the brigand's side. While the victim cries in pain, one of the other attempts come at Iri from the back.

You fire your weapon at the assaulting victim, hitting him on the hip. Enough time for Iri to quickly roll away and gain her posture back.

"Graghhhh!!!" you hear a scream coming at you. You turn to the front where one brigand seems to have charged past Rickon and is now aiming to kill you.

"Shit!" you exclaim, not having much time to dodge. The sword comes down at you and you think it will draw blood.

The sword is repelled however by a white shield around you just before it hits your shoulder. The brigand is pushed back by the shield, his poor sword unable to break through and he yelps in surprise.

You take this opportunity to...

>go at the brigand with your dagger
>fall back quickly

Not trusting in your abilities to fight, you fall back rather than try to take on the brigand. You perhaps lost an opportunity to take the man down, but safe is your game of play.

You see Rickon manage to spear one of the brigands through the chest. The man you failed to fight decides to try and attack Rickon from the back rather than go for you again protected by spell. The brigand charges forward and manages to stab the lancer in the back.

The poor sword however cannot get past Rickon's armor, though he manages to wound the spearman slightly. With an angry look Rickon smashes the brigand's face side with the pole of his spear. The brigand goes down with blood glittering in the air and a few teeth flying.

On the sides Annete manages to take a brigand down by piercing his heart with her rapier. She quickly falls back and chants a spell. As the other brigand rushes for her, she shoots out a bolt of lighting from her hand and blows away the brigand.

On the other side Iri kills off one brigand with a cut to the neck. Using her agility and wounding the enemy, she wears the enemy down. She meets the last brigand by throwing sand in his eyes and thrusting her dagger in his belly.

One man left. Seeing his comrades defeated, he attempts to turn and run only to be stuck in the back by a fireball and falling. Helena comes forward with a breath of air.

The last man is still alive and falls on his rear. "Mercy!" he pleads as the group reorganizes and comes forward.

"Aye, mercy. Better for you to die than try and live in this world with those wounds," Rickon states as he drives his spear in the brigand's neck.

You wipe a sweat from your brow. It seems victory has been achieved, though you suspect fighting mere bandits is easier work than fighting actual soldiers. You look at your comrades; Rickon has a small wound and it seems Iri cut a cut on her arm that's shallow and of no concern.

Wait for food was longer than I thought, gimme another 30 mins or so to eat.

Until then give me questions, concerns, comments, or anything to address.

Is switching Jobs done by selecting to do specific things, or do we just vote on make a Job switch and opening up different options?

Since we started with Chemist, do we need to first train up Squire before we can take Knight, like in the original FFT Job Tree?

"Tend to Iri, I'll tend to Rickon," you tell Helena who nods in confirmation to you. The lancer sits down on a large rock with a small sigh as you head over to him. You see Annette sheathe her rapier and cross her arms as she waits for everyone's wounds to be tended.

"Let me see the wound," you say as you unpack your knapsack and bring out a potion.

"Nothing but a graze," Rickon mumbles, but nonetheless takes of his armor. As he said, the wound is a small graze but you know better than to leave them open and untreated. You sprinkle the potion on his wound and begins to bandage his wound.

Rickon looks over to Helena who is healing Iri's small cut with magic. Rickon sighs.

"Man, I'd rather be treated by the lady than another sweaty man," he says with a scratch if his head. "Wouldn't you rather be treating a woman too?"

>Probably, but I feel like your wound was a bit of my fault

You can choose any job you want. "Job" is just really how you're trying to fight and what equipment you want. So if you want to try and be a knight, just grab a sword and some armor.

Just remember that you're starting as a complete beginner. It's probably not a good idea to try and dive right in as a knight without training or the like.

Are any of the specialist classes open to us? Do we just need to find someone who knows the abilities to teach us ?
>>
>>40418642
No special classes. They can only be obtained via feats, rewards, meeting someone superior and learning, etc.

"Aye, wouldn't mind seeing to the little Missus over there," you reply putting salve on bandages and placing it over Rickon's wound. "But I feel like this is a bit of my fault you got wounded. Maybe should have taken care of that one guy myself."

"Eh, don't sweat it," he says with a wave of his hand. "Most of the time you gotta rely on yourself. And I don't expect bookworms like yourself to be out in the front."

You finish the bandaging and get up as Rickon puts his armor back on. You see that Helena has finished healing Iri as well, and the thief is now scampering about the bodies looking for loot. Rickon does the same as he pokes around the bodies.

"Honestly, are you lot serious?" Annette says coming over with a grim look on her face. "Looting bodies like beggars. If you're all done with the healing let's move it!"

"Shut yer trap. Bodies are dead, I ain't leaving any valuables to just rot on the ground," Rickson says as stabs a small pouch with his spear and lifts it up.

"Not all of us rich like you Red Velvet," the thief says as she skips across the dead bodies.

"It's ANNETTE!"

After a few minutes the looting is done and the group moves forward once again. Iri tosses you a pouch with some coins in it.

"Half, for your help Z." Seems the thief is in the habit of using nicknames.

With all this speak of looting and valuables, you remember you probably should keep track of your inventory. As of now you have 3 potions, around 12 bullets, and 120 gil (20 from Iri). As a Chemist you can scavenge the land to brew potions and special alchemic brews rather than spending money to buy them. You should also take care of your money to buy equipment and other essentials. Gil makes everything they say.

Your company moves again. After that battle it seems the routine is back on track trekking through the road and passing small villages. At times you have to climb some hills making the walk more difficult. At the very least your group doesn't encounter any monsters which are common around these hills. If you had some chocobos things would be easier.

The day is orange and the sun is going when you reach Yardow Fort City. As the name states, the city is surrounded by walls and manned by the royal troops.

"Finally..." Annette mumbles catching her breath."

"Too much for my little noble lady?" Rickson says with a sneer. He gets a cold look before Annette begins walking again and moves to the gate.

You reach the gates and a knight above the wall calls down.

“Who goes there? Names yourselves!” he calls down.

A small unit if troops coming to a city near at war. It's practically obvious who you guys are. Rickon rolls his eyes but you step forward to do all the protocols and formalities that seemed to be needed to pass the walls.

"Strident squad, reinforcements from the capital," you say to the knight above. "Zaren Aphelion of Gallione."

The rest of the squad give their names and after a few minutes the gates are opened up and you're all allowed in. When you enter you can see some of the houses are deserted and a number of people have left the city. Not many people want to be in a city that might be besieged anytime soon it seems.

Your squad is forced to trek through the streets a bit longer before coming to the barracks. It is nightfall by the time you enter the domain of the soldiers. A few veterans troops glance your way and you hear a few mutter and taking bets on who will die first.

Your squad reports to the captain's quarters to report your arrival. A bald, stout man greets you with a glare at the office.

"More fresh recruits?" he says with disdain. "Can't the capital send me a company of good knights than a bunch of virgin kids?" Captain Borris Barck baws and curses to himself.

"What a prick," Rickon mutters. It seems Annette agrees with the lancer for once as she grits her teeth and takes the abuse.

"The capital is sending all the aid they can, Captain," you say with a bow. "I assure you that we will be of service and aid to the war effort. May we retire to our quarters for duty tomorrow?"

"You shall speak when I ask you to oaf," the captain replies pointing at you. "Soldiers who don't even know when to speak. Some bloody service you fools will be."

You hold your tongue as the man insults you and sideways you can see the others are losing their patience.

"Off with you, go to section F," he says turning around to his table and shooing you all away with his hand as if you were gnats. You all step out of the building.

"The nerve of the man!" Annette screeches as the group makes it way back to the barracks and to your quarters. "I bet oaf doesn't know the point of his sword to the hilt!"

"I just want to get to beeeeed..." Iri complains.

Helena walks silently along while Rickon grudgingly mutters to himself. A whole day of traveling through hills and fighting bandits only to be treated like garbage from the captain. It isn't a happy day for everyone.

You manage to find your quarters, one room only the size of a guest room of a nobleman's house. The squad sit at their hard, uncomfortable beds.

"Oh chocobo dung, I hope every day isn't going to be like this," Iri says as she lies down on her bed.

"I'd like to give that fatass the sharp point of my spear," Rickson says taking his armor off and tossing it aside. "Fuck me if I'm going to be taking that shit from him every day."

"You can take it or be hanged," Helena replies. "Would rather have you alive than executed for mutiny."

"Taken a liking to me eh?" Rickson states with a sneer.

"Please," the priest replies with a roll of her eyes.

With time to rest and the group talking, should you stay up and keep up to date on current affairs so far, or just go to bed?

Before you head to bed, you decide it's best to review information about the invading force before facing them in battle. You take a look at the group that seems tired.

"What do you all know about the Romandans?" you ask.

"Not much," Rickon says with a shrug. "Some fuckwits invading our lands and the guys we need to kill."

"Keep thinking like that and you'll wind up dead," Annette says as she folds her clothes and neatly places her rapier bedside.

"And how sad it'll be if I were to leave you Missus" Rickon replies with his typical sneer and jeer.

"The Romandans," you begin before another argument starts from the two. "was a military nation a hundred years back. After they lost the war with Ivalice I hear the ruler was overthrown and the cities became independent. Their land is only a fourth of the size, which is why they seem to have waited until the Ordalians attacked before coming themselves. The guns," you say taking out your weapon, "were actually made and reformed from the ages back by the Romandans. I doubt we should take them lightly," you say.

"So the lot of them are technological wits?" Rickon asks. "Not able to fight with a sword and shield?"

"No, I hear they are able warriors as well, though that might have changed since the dissolution of their military kingdom to independent cities."

"Much of them do not believe in the word of God as well," Helena says joining in. "Enemies without religion and God to shield to them. We will drive them out soon enough."

"If only God could do his own job and kill the heathens himself," Rickson replies with a scoff. Helena glares at the man as he lies down to bed.

You can see Iri is already fast asleep, the small girl making wheezing noises as she dreams in another world. Seeing Annette lying on her side and trying to sleep as well, you decide to hit the hay for the night.

It's been a damn long day.
