Codex: (Coming soon!)

You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

Currently, you were standing face to face against what had to be at least six Reikland VTs. As typical of Reikland VTs, these vehicles were painted a dark black, their red optics glowing brightly in the gloom of Shadowtree. It was as if Reikland deliberately designed these things to look as evil and threatening as possible. However, from what you've read, these particular models, dubbed Lynxes by Tilean Intelligence, were actually inferior to Wolverines unit to unit. They sported a similar 75mm cannon as the base Wolverine, but their armor was not quite as thick. However, the Reiklanders made up for this through numbers as well as fanatical fighting prowess. From what you've read from the histories, there has never been a documented instance of a Lynx crew surrendering or having been captured.

And you get the feeling they weren't going to be starting today.

"Come on, let's get them!" Bannon whoops, his cannon firing. "ALL UNITS FORWARD!"

With that, Bannon's Wolverine surges forward.

"Aw jeez. Figured he'd say something like that." Rock sighs as his Wolverine follows suit.

"All right! Let's go!" Axel says eagerly as his Heavy Wolverine trudges forward, though its greater weight meant it couldn't quite keep up with its lighter variants.

As one, the three Tilean VTs began firing their cannons, and explosions rippled across the Lynx formation. In response, the Lynxes braced themselves into a firing position and began firing back in retaliation.

"Roy?" Tarin turns to you, her hand on the throttle.

Wait, so how does being a "VT/Tank Ace" work?

Is there a certain amount of VTs, armoured vehicles, and guns that we have to destroy/knock out in a single battle or is it cumulative over multiple engagements?
>>
>>40437771
I assume around like 5 or so.
>>
>>40437771
What are the usual requirements for being a "tank Ace?" Is it a number of infantry regiments? Other tanks? Do planes count?
>>
>>40437883
Looking at Otto Carius' record, he seems that he got over 150 tanks (not including anti-tank guns or artillery).
Looking at the bare minimum of a tank ace for Germany, it looks like a kill count of at least 14 tanks is needed.

"Orders are orders, Tarin. Full speed ahead!" You bark.

Tarin nods and opens up the throttle. Your Wolverine's engine roars as power is injected into it and its legs begin to pick up the pace. Bannon and the rest of the platoon have already gotten a bit of a headstart on you, and were already nearly halfway across the clearing, enemy shells landing all around them and bouncing off their front armor. In fact, you could even hear the loud CLANGS as ricocheted cannon shells deflected into or fell onto the top of your Wolverine. However, Tarin was unphased by the impacts and kept pushing the Wolverine forward.

You then glance through your periscope, too cautious to risk turning out on the hatch for a better view. You could see that the Lynxes were still not moving, preferring their static positions. No doubt to get the best shot possible. Your platoon, meanwhile, was depending on its quick movement to throw their aim off, with some measure of success. Well, if worst came to worst, they could always take cover behind Axel and Alfie's Heavy Wolverine, which was slowly plodding across the clearing at its own, slow pace.

That didn't mean there were some near misses, though. You see a shell glance off the knee of Bannon's VT, causing the vehicle to tilt dangerously for a brief second before Parker is able to recover.

"Keep us in formation, Tarin." You say. "A little back and to the right.

"Roger." Tarin nods. She slows the Wolverine's pace so that you can actually start firing on the move. You peer through your periscope again, centering the crosshairs over the nearest Lynx. The ugly little bastard was close enough to fill up the entire sight.

"Firing!" You bellow.

Your Wolverine's cannon thunders as it fires its shell. You can see the projectile launch and fly at the Lynx line, but it's not good enough. The shell passes in between two Lynxes and directly into a tree. However, you note that the tree is so thick that it actually absorbs the impact of the shell rather than being blown apart by it. There's a dull WHUMP as the spent shell is automatically ejected from the breech, and the autoloader hums and it loads in a fresh one.

Two of the Lynxes turn toward you, aiming their cannons at you. They return fire, but both are wide misses, whizzing by either side of you and causing your hull to vibrate as they pass.

Meanwhile, Bannon and Rock make some headway, blasting two of the Lynxes into scrap. One explodes brilliantly as its ammunition cooks off, while the other one takes a piercing shot straight through the crew compartment. It doesn't explode, but it slumps down, its red optic flickering and going dead.

"They're going to take all the kills if you don't pick it up." Tarin remarks.

"I know, I know!" You groan as you take aim once again.

>>40438818
You center your sight over the same Lynx again and pull the trigger. Once again, your 76mm cannon booms loudly as it fires. This time, your shell is on target, drilling into the narrow space between its hull and its gun, blasting the weapon clean off. The Lynx stumbles backwards. Your autoloader loads a fresh shell and you move to acquire the next target when Tarin slaps you in the arm.

"It's not dead!" She grunts.

You swing your sight back on the first Lynx. At first you thought it would have fallen back with its primary weapon destroyed, but you see that it's starting to pick up speed. It's trying ram you!

Normally, this would be a terrifying prospect, but you were trained better than that. You were a Devil Dog!

Plus, there was a reason why ramming was always considered a tactic of last resort. After all, doing so meant you could only move forward directly at your enemy in a straight line, making you incredibly easy to hit. It was a move for those who had nothing to lose.

You recenter your sights. Your cannon depresses to compensate for the closing distance, and you pull the trigger.

>No points remain!

Your 76mm cannon booms, launching its third shell. It strikes the Lynx directly in its red optic, achieving a perfect penetration by going through the front of the VT's front armor and out the back. The Lynx's legs go limp and the vehicle topples to the ground, sliding to a stop at the feet of your Wolverine. Tarin doesn't even slow down and keeps your Wolverine on the move, finishing off the Lynx by crushing its crew compartment in with one well placed stomp of your Wolverine's armored foot. Structurally compromised armor plates buckle and snap under the weight as the compartment caves in and Tarin continues closing with the rest of the Lynxes.

"That was a bit harsh, Tarin." You mutter.

"They had it coming." Tarin shrugs.

"Hey, kid! Good job on your first kill!" Rock says happily. "Now focus and do the same for the rest of 'em!"

At this point, you see that there were now two Lynxes left, a fourth having also been taken out while you were focused on your own target. However, the last two Lynxes were still not retreating. You had to give credit to Reiklanders. They similarly wouldn't give up.

"All right, let's finish them off!" Bannon says, his voice brimming with confidence as he brings his Wolverine to a stop to aim.

You fire off your next and last shot, and smile when it hits on the first try, punching straight into the Lynx's front glacis plate. Normally, the angled plate would be enough to deflect a 75mm shell from a distance, but your 76mm had a bit more oomph behind it. This time, there isn't a clean penetration, trapping the shell inside where it explodes and sets off the Lynx's magazine. The VT bursts open like firecracker.

The next Lynx is relentlessly pummeled by the rest of the platoon. Axel fires off a shot, which glances off the front glacis. Bannon's shot is a bit low, but strikes the Lynx in its more vulnerable knee, shattering the joint and causing the VT to topple the ground on its side. Rock's Wolverine then strides up, angles its cannon downward, and fires an HE shell into the Lynx's weaker side armor at point blank. The crippled VT explodes violently, showering Rock's Wolverine with fire and shrapnel, but leaving it largely unharmed.

"Good job, kid." Rock says as his Wolverine steps back from the kill. "You got two kills under your belt. Two more and you'll be a proper ace!"

"Damn, we didn't get a single kill!" Axel groans.

"I-It'll be fine! Acehood isn't everything!" Alfie tries to reassure her brother.

"Well well well, looks like 7th Platoon isn't completely made up of scrubs!" You hear a haughty and smug voice chuckle over the radio.

"Aw fuck, it's 8th Platoon." Bannon sighs.

You open your hatch and turn out, spinning around to get a view to your rear. Sure enough, you see four more Wolverines at the treeline, having seemed to have just arrived.

"Well, looks like everything's wrapped up!" The apparent leader of 8th Platoon says happily. "Maybe we should push further in and teach those Reiks a lesson! Unless you're too scared, Bannon?"

"Oh man, here we go." Rock sighs over the platoon frequency.

"What's going on?" You ask.

"Bannon and 8th have an... interesting relationship." Rock says. "Maybe I'll tell you about it later."

"How about we take point this time? You guys can tag along if you like." The 8th Platoon leader chuckles as her unit strides forward.

"Are you sure we're supposed to be doing that?" Axel asks. "I thought we were supposed to neutralize the threat."

"Exactly, and there might be more threats hiding in the forest!"

"Sir?" You address Bannon.

"Better hold on a second. He's thinking." Parker says, though from her tone you get the impression that she's also saying, "He's open to ideas right now."

"I think we've done enough for today." You say. "I mean, we destroyed their logging unit and six of their veets. I'm pretty sure we sent a strong enough message to the Reiklanders."

"Yeah, that's right!" Bannon finally speaks up. "It's getting dark, and we all know Shadowtree is bad enough during daytime!"

With that, 8th Platoon's VTs pause, stopping right next to your formation. Their commander, a very smug looking girl, turns out from her hatch and give you a critical eye, her smug grin somehow growing wider as she does so.

"Ah, so this is your new meat, Bannon?" She chuckles as she turns to your platoon commander. "Hope they last longer than the previous ones!"

"That's not funny, Chambers." Bannon fumes.

"Sorry, did I say that out loud?" Chambers shrugs nonchalantly. "Fine, we'll listen to you on this one.

With that, Chambers and her 8th Platoon turn around and head back the way they came. Your platoon follows suit, with Rock keeping an eye on the rear.

"Sheesh, who the hell do they think they are?" Axel grumbles over a private channel. "I don't see them doing much."

"I know right?" You sigh.

Curious, you key up Rock's private frequency on your short range radio.

"Hey, Rock."

"Yeah?" The veteran tanker replies. "Something on your mind?"

"What the hell was that all about? What does Chambers have to do with us?" You ask.

"Ah yeah, that." Rock sighs. "That's a loooong story. The short and simple version is that Bannon and Chambers used to be a crew. Mostly did patrols, fought a few skirmishes with the Reiklanders."

"What could happen to split a crew up like that?" You wonder.

"Well, I wasn't there, but Parker told me about it. There were reports that a Reik patrol penetrated the border. Sure enough, when their platoon got on the scene, the managed to intercept convoy. Chambers had managed to maneuver their VT into a good firing position, but when it tuned out the patrol was twice as big as reported, Bannon choked."

"Choked?" You raise an eyebrow. "What do you mean by that?"

"I mean he chickened out." Rock says. "I don't know much about Bannon's past, and neither does Parker, but wherever he came from, he had enough pull to get into a command position but was coddled enough that he didn't exactly have that warrior spirit. He should've took the opening shot but didn't. What should have been a textbook ambush then turned into a bloody slugmatch."

"How bad?" Tarin asks.

"Traded four Reik VTs for two of ours. Both crews lost." Rock says sadly. "Chambers never forgave Bannon for that. Felt that she would have done a better job as commander, and I guess you could say that she may have been right."

"So that's why she always acts so smug and superior around him?"

"That's right. Sawyer was so pissed he demoted Bannon on the spot and had Chambers replace him. She never let him forget it, since."

"That's harsh." You frown.

"It is, but she does kinda have a good reason for it." Rock says. "Whether it's right or not, well, that's up to you."

"I think both of them are in the wrong on that." You sigh. "Bannon shouldn't have frozen in combat like that, and Chambers really shouldn't keep rubbing it in his face and holding a grudge, considering she got what she wanted."

"Yeah, well, what are you gonna do? It's human nature." Rock responds sadly. "Things aren't just going to change overnight."

"Yeah, I get that." You nod. "So, um, do you think Bannon at least changed? He seemed pretty damn aggressive today."

"Yeah, I think that's just him trying to make up for his mistake back then." Rock remarks. "I mean, nobody can accuse him of being a coward if he's the first into the fight."

"Still, it seems rather reckless." Tarin points out. "That charge in the forest could have easily gone south very quickly."

"Yeah, well, I guess it was better than pussying out and giving up the ground to them." Rock replies. "But I don't know. Bannon is a pretty complicated guy. Parker knows him the best out of all of us, so if you want to know more, you should ask her."

"I'll keep that in mind."

"Hey, you guys are pretty quiet back there." Bannon grunts. "You guys still alive?"

"Yeah!" You say after you quickly switch back to the platoon channel. "Just talking about today's battle."

"Uh huh." Bannon is only half convinced. "You telling stories behind my back again, Rock?"

"I would never do such a thing!" Rock says somewhat jokingly.

"Agh, whatever. Doesn't matter." Bannon mutters.

"All right, we're nearing the edge of the forest. We'll be getting back in radio contact with the rest of the division soon." Parker announces. "Hope you get your kills properly tallied! If you're not careful 8th my try to steal-"

Suddenly, your radio screeches from the interference of multiple voices trying to talk at once. You instinctively wince and pull your headset off.

(cont)
>>
>>40442827
"Agh! Son of a bitch!" You shout. Tarin is lightning fast, already switching off unnecessary frequencies and narrowing things down to platoon and divisional channels only.

"What the hell is going on?!" Axel groans.

"My ears..." Alfie whimpers.

"Jesus, Colonel, what's going on?" Bannon asks on the division frequency.

"Bannon! Chambers! About goddamn time!" Sawyer snaps. "The line went hot while you were playing in the forest! We've got Reikland troops pushing all across the border!

Everything seems to go silent and your heart stops. From these words, and the distant booms of explosions and gunfire, you realized that this was it. Shit had hit the fan and you were right under it.

"What do we do, sir?" Chambers asks.

"We need you to-" Sawyer's voice is suddenly cut off by a loud screeching sound.

"Damnit!" Chambers rips her headset off and turns to face Bannon. "They're jamming our comms!"

"Yeah, I know that!" Bannon snaps back. "What the fuck do we do about it!"

"We're heading to the nearest line base! Chances are, they're gonna need all the help they can get!" Chambers' VT spins around to take a southeastern course. "You're free to follow us, or just stay there and cower. All up to you, really!"

With that, 8th Platoon sprints down the hill to where you can see a major engagement occurring further down the border.

"Damnit damnit damnit." Bannon mutters.

"I think we should find and take out the jammer to restore comms." You suggest. "That should be our first priority."

"That's a good idea." Parker says, backing you up. "Seemed like Sawyer wanted us to do something important. Taking out that jammer not only gets us back in contact with him, but also helps out the rest of the units in the area."

"Yeah... yeah we'll do that." Bannon nods as he takes his binoculars. "Okay, okay, so if I were to put up I jammer, I'd need to have a good spot to broadcast it from... Aha!"

Bannon then points east, across the Reikland border to a rather large hill. On the top, it seemed that the Reiklanders had deployed a large radio mast on top. It had to be where they were broadcasting the jamming signal. However, around it, you could see at least four Lynxes, as well as a number of anti-VT guns and entrenched infantry. This was going to be a tough nut to crack.

"Shit, that's going to a hard to assault." Rock grunts.

"As if assaulting any Reiklander position would be easy." Alex replies dryly.

"Okay, okay, I think I know how we'll do this. We'll have Axel spearhead the push. He's got a Heavy Wolverine so it should be able to take the punishment until we can get close enough to assault."

"Should?" Parker asks inquisitively.

"Hey, I'll do what I'm ordered to, but I'm not too sure about that..." Axel says nervously.

"S-sounds too dangerous!" Alfie whimpers.

"Well, we can set up position on that opposing hill on our side of the border and try to hit that tower." Tarin says. "Our 76 has a longer effective range, after all."

"You realize, the moment you fire, they'll be all over you, and if you don't take it out on the first shot, we'll be in a whole world of trouble?" Rock warns.

"I'll try to hit the jammer from long range." You say. "If you guys can cover me, I think i can take it out."

"All right, I hope you know what you're doing." Bannon grimaces. "All right, Rock, Axel, we'll take positions at the foot of the hill. At the very least we can draw their fire or physically block their way."

Meanwhile, Tarin maneuvers your Wolverine behind the hill, making sure to use the feature as cover to keep your VT in defilade.

"All right, once you're ready, I'll crest the hill and you fire. Okay?" Tarin says, her hands firmly on the controls.

"Sheesh, Tarin, do you really have that much faith in my shooting?" You sigh.

"Well, it's not like we have any other choice." Tarin shrugs.

"Gee, thanks for the vote of confidence." You roll your eyes.

"No problem."

You take a second to lean back in your seat and take a deep breath, readying yourself.

"All right, Tarin, let's get this done." You say.

Tarin nods and opens up the throttle. Your Wolverine lumbers forward, cresting the hell. In a split second, you see the massive jammer tower and take aim at the base...

You cannon roars as it spits out a 76mm shell. With the encroaching darkness of dusk, the flash is even more brilliant than before. You see your shell streak out across the field to the opposing hill, where it sails over the heads of the Reiklander defenders and blows right into the base of the jammer. The entire structure teeters dangerously, and your comms briefly clear up as a power surge interrupts the jammer's operations for a split second.

However, the jammer remains standing. You only managed to take out one of its support legs, causing the tower to teeter dangerously, but it was still active.

It was also their cue to start firing every they had at you. The Lynxes begin rushing your hill, while the emplaced anti-VT guns begin shelling your position. You're a tad bit out of their maximum effective range, but their shots are still falling perilously close to you position.

"Don't worry, we can handle the rest!" Bannon says. "You've drawn their fire, so I think we can drive right up to them before they realize what's happening! Fall back behind the hill and we'll take care of the rest!"

"I sure hope you know what you're doing, kid!" Bannon grunts. "All right, 7th Platoon, hold those bastards back!"

You see a trio of muzzle flashes at the foot of the hill as your fellow VTs launch a volley of shells at the incoming Lynxes, shredding one to pieces right away.

Meanwhile, more shells fall around you as you try to readjust your aim. Tarin does her best to keep your Wolverine braced as it gets buffeted from the shockwaves of the falling the shells.

"Any time now." Tarin grunts as she continues the precarious balancing act.

"Don't rush me." You respond as you settle your crosshairs over the jammer again and then adjust your aim up and to the right a bit to compensate for the previous shot.

You next shot flies straight and true, plowing straight in the middle of the jamming tower. This proves to be the last straw, as the tower's structural integrity finally fails as its steel supports crumple like paper. The jamming tower teeters dangerously from side to side until finally, it leans over just a bit too far and topples over, sending Reiklanders scurrying for cover. You could see at least one anti-VT gun get crushed under the falling structure, much to your satisfaction.

"Hey, that's two for two! Nice shooting, kid!" Rock says proudly.

"We got comms!" Parker announces. "Hold on a bit while I try to get back in contact with the Colonel!"

"Yeah!" You grin as you high five Tarin. "We got it!"

However, that celebration is short lived when your Wolverine shudders from a pair of impacts.

Suddenly, your entire VT shakes violently and you seem to black out for a brief second.

"Roy! Tarin! Can you hear me!?" You can hear Axel's voice over the radio, but it sounds so distant, as if he were a hundred miles away, and underwater.

The incessant ringing in your ears wasn't helping either.

However, your hearing and the rest of the world comes rushing back in like a tidal wave, slamming into your skull full force. Immediately, your senses catch up with, and you cough as acrid smoke stings your eyes and throat. Immediately following your training, you throw the hatch open and hit the button for your vehicle's ventilation fan to get the smoke out.

"Tarin? Tarin!" You yell, trying to clear the smoke out of you way. "Are you okay?"

"Alive." Tarin says simply.

It wasn't good when Tarin didn't directly answer your question.

Finally, the smoke clears and you see Tarin was indeed still alive, though she was pressing a rag over her shoulder.

"Doesn't look like the shells penetrated." Tarin coughs. "But I think there was some spalling and damage caused by the concussion. I got us back behind the hill to get us out of the line of fire."

"HOW CAN YOU BE SO CALM RIGHT NOW!" You yell as you dig around for the first aid kit.

"It's just some shrapnel."Tarin shrugs.

"Hey! Powers, you still alive!?" Bannon's VT stops next to yours. "We drove off the Reiklanders for now, but they're damn pissed. It's only a matter time till they regroup!"

"And I got back into contact with Sawyer. He want us to reinforce the line at Savoy. There's a good chance the Reiks can push through there." Parker says. "Are you combat effective?"

Tarin gives the levers a test with her good arm.

"Hydraulics and electronics are still working. Looks like we're still operational."

"But your shoulder-"

"Minor in the larger scheme of things." Tarin says as she casually takes the first aid kit and starts bandaging her injured shoulder. "There's an invasion going on. We don't exactly have the luxury of picking our fights."

"Axel, you can you give a visual check of our VT?" You ask.

"It looks messed up bad. Your front glacis is dented in, and you took a second hit in your right leg. It's still intact but it can't possibly be operating at full capacity now."

You glance over to Tarin, who only gives you a barely imperceptible nod.

Damnit. Tarin clearly wanted to keep the fight up, and well, who were you to deny her that? You sigh and reluctantly key your radio.

"I guess we'll just have to work with what we have." You grimace. "Axel, think you can help me do some field repairs?"

"Sure thing."

"You guys got five minutes." Bannon barks. "Make the best of it.

Most of those five minutes are spent trying to fix and reinforce your VT's damaged leg joint. You would have liked to have done something about your dented glacis, but you had neither the time nor resources to perform a fix of that caliber.

"Time's up!" Bannon says as he backs his VT away from the crest of the hill. "The Reiklanders are coming up on our ass. We gotta pack up and MOVE."

"Right!" Axel nods. "Good luck, man."

"Thanks." You nod back and clamber up to the hatch.

"From the sounds of it, Savoy is in some seriously deep shit." Parker informs you. "We're going to be having to go on full speed on this one. You think you can keep up with us?"

You glance at Tarin and she nods again wordlessly.

We cannot match their speed unless they all slow down. We've got a long range on our gun and we're damaged, support from the rear

we don't want to put to much strain on the leg and besides if they get there early we might be able to do some sniping.

"You guys go on ahead. We'll catch up." You say. "I don't want to put too much strain on this leg."

"All right. Be careful out there. No telling how many Reiks managed to infiltrate our lines." Rock warns. "Stay safe, kid. Anything goes wrong, give us a holler, okay?"

"Sure thing, Rock." You reply. "We'll be fine."

With that, the rest of your platoon takes off at full gallop, their VTs bounding across the field south towards the town of Savoy. Meanwhile, Tarin throttles up to only three quarters of combat speed. The maximum speed she felt was safe to go out without putting too much strain on your VT's damaged leg.

However, you quickly begin to feel rather isolated out here. Even though you were in your own country, the sun was quickly going down, and it was getting progressively harder to see, which of course would make it harder to identify incoming threats. There was also no way you were turning on your running lights. That as well be a giant SHOOT ME sign.

"Goddamn, I can barely see a damn thing out there." You grumble.

"Maybe you should turn out." Tarin suggests. "Nothing beats the standard issue eyeball."

"What, and risk getting my head taken off by a stray shell or bullet?" You raise an eyebrow.

"I never said it was a foolproof plan."

"All right, I'm going to try and get a better look out there."

"Good luck." Tarin nods as she returns her attention to the driving controls, occasionally, putting a hand to her injured shoulder.

You stand up and open the hatch, breathing in the fresh air as you did so. The stench of smoke still clung to the inside of your VT, stinging your eyes and throat. This was a refreshing change of pace. However, you also catch the smell of something else. It was distinct from the exhaust belching from the engine, the motor oil lubricating the parts, or even the smell of gunpowder wafting from your VT's magazine. A stench that had no place on a VT.

It smelled like rotting meat.

"Tarin, we didn't bring any raw meat with us or anything, did we?" You ask.

"No, nothing like that." Tarin shakes her head. "Why?"

"I get the feeling something's wrong..."

And that's when you see a pale white, rotten hand reach over the top of your VT, scrabbling for a handhold.

>And that's it for tonight! As always, next thread is next week. Don't forget PJ Witches on Sunday and Ace Combat on Friday!

""It's nightfall. July 16, 1946. Everything's gone to shit. The Reikland War Machine is advancing at an astonishing rate. We can't catch up. Our tactics are failing. Outclassed and outgunned, and nobody knows why. People are getting desperate.

Not me, I'm here to be the best VT ace there is. Turn this thing around."
