Emma's breath rises and falls slowly as she lays in the center of the furs, and you whine softly, eyes on the small girl. Djanna rubs salve into your burns with a focused frown, and Nurrim looks somewhere between petrified and manic. She mutters to herself every now and again, the only evidence of such is the movement of her lips.

You look up at Nurrim, a glare on your face. "Who is 'Neya?'" You feel oddly calm. Focused. Angry.

"...our oldest sister. She perished along with the rest of our family in the flames, when the man in white attacked us."

"You're sure?"

Nurrim falls silent, and turns her eyes back to Emma. She rises and moves to her side, dropping to her knees beside the girl. "I had... thought Emma dead, after so long. I don't know what to believe any more."

"Then, could she still be alive?"

"If she were... I don't know how it is I missed her for so many years. Why did Emma react the way she did? You're... you know something..."

You and Djanna share a look as she bandages your wounds, and you reach out to stroke the smaller girl's hair. She whimpers under your touch as you whimper under Djanna's.

"She... remembers something. Just a little bit, but something." Nurrim frowned softly, leaning back and waiting for you to further explain. Well, in for a copper...

You describe, in brief, Emma's recollection. Nurrim looks as though she wants to strike you for insulting her kin, but you stand your ground, and she calms slowly.

"You're telling me... that Neya was working with..." She looks down at her hand, and you follow her gaze. Something has changed about her hand, the slender pink digits having melded with her manicured nails into long, razor-sharp claws. You can't help but shiver.

>I'm angry too, but calm down!
>If she's alive, we can find her. We can get answers!

Welcome to RE: Kobold Quest

QM Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/lotuseater1031

Ask me Questions: http://ask.fm/Lotus_Eater

Pastebin: http://pastebin.com/u/Lotus_Eater

SYSTEMS:

Rolling: d100, best of three, roll under, degrees of success (roll compared to DC/opponent rolls and the amount by which you succeed/fail will matter). 1/100 are crit successes/fails, and override other rolls. A crit fail and success on the same roll means the remaining die result will be used.

Win/Lose by 10: Slight Success/Failure

10-20: Moderate Success/Failure

Greater than 20: Extreme Success/Failure

Voting/Writing: Ten minutes for voting, 20-40 minutes for writing as needed.

Final Destination: If a vote is tied/contended, I will call for FINAL DESTINATION, and present the most popular options. For those who don't know, you must vote precisely in the form of ">vote" without additional commentary. This extends 4chan's native post delay from one minute to five, and prevents samefagging or vote padding.

Exploration: While I have a general outline of what's going to happen, sometimes there are instances where things are left to chance. In those cases, I'll call for 1d10, and take the first given. Low rolls are beneficial encounters, with the higher you go being more dangerous. A result of 10 can actually be threatening to the character, and should be treated as such.

You reach out and take her hand gently. The whole thing feels rigid, changed entirely. Maybe it's a shapeshifting thing. She looks down at you, the dangerous glint in her eyes softening somewhat as you shake your head.

"I'm angry too, but Emma takes priority. If she's alive, we'll get answers later. Just us three. Emma... should probably never meet her." Nurrim nods without hesitation. You feel Djanna tie off your bandage and wince. The fireballs hadn't hurt when they'd hit, but you were in pretty sorry condition now. Your wounds hurt, skin blackened and already blistering. You reach up to your chest with a whine and Djanna gives your hand a soft swat.

"Don't pick at it. You'll make it worse." You wince, but nod.

"I'm sorry. We should go hunting, so you can heal." Nurrim lays a hand on Emma's stomach and makes a concerned whine in her throat, bending to kiss the younger girl's lips gently. "I love you, sister. You'll be safe here inside the domain. I promise." She rises slowly, stretching out.

She unbinds the sash around her rope and lets it fall aside. She's bare but for somewhat baggy short pants, bound with a woven belt tied in a knot at her waist, and long cloth bindings around her breasts. Her body bears heavy burn scars just like her face, as well as deep, dark gashes - the echoes of battles long past. "Come on, my dears. Which of you is going with me?"

You take Emma's hand in yours, holding it tenderly. "Djanna, would you mind? I'm not feeling up to it, and one of us should be here when she wakes up." Nurrim nods, looking to the dragon.

Your sister gulps but nods, rising. "Do... do I have to take off my shirt too?" she asks bashfully. The older woman shakes her head, and a moment later they're gone.

Time passes slowly in the glade, the cold lanterns swaying lazily overhead in the sunlight, a soft breeze teasing your hair and the tips of your ears. You hear rattling up in the trees, and you snap your gaze upward. A long ring of wooden tubes hang from a branch, each longer than the last, a chunk of wood held between them. The notes they strike sound almost musical.

"Beast... beast frighteners..." you feel Emma shift her head into your lap, her voice weak. You jump in your seat, looking down at the smaller girl as she curls against you, cheeks blazing in shame. "Father hung them in the woods to scare monsters away from home. I guess... she kept one of them."

"Are you-"

"I'm fine." Her tails thrash as she clings to you. "But you. I- I burned you. I burned you..." she shudders, her voice choked as she begins to sob. You softly run your hand over her hair and she flinches. "Don't! I don't deserve it... I hurt you..."

"You were scared! Emma, I don't blame you! It hurts, but it'll get better. Don't worry about me, are you all right?"

She snaps back, glaring at you in utter disbelief. "I BURNED YOU! I set you on fire, and you're worried about- Nadia, are you..."

You tilt your head to the side, looking at her with confusion.

Tears well up in her eyes, and her breath hitches in her chest as she tries not to cry.

You reach out and grab her, pulling her tight against you. She doesn't struggle, just presses her face against your chest and sobs. Once she's all cried out, you run your claws lightly through her hair. "It's just like that time I brushed your hair the wrong way and pulled it. It hurt, but I didn't mean to, and you forgave me right?"

"But y-"

"No 'buts'!" You pull her up into your lap and curl around her, tail thrashing. "You didn't mean to either, and I forgive you because you're my sister and my kitty and we love each-other and forgive each-other when we do not-nice things, especially when we don't mean to, so don't beat yourself up about it. Please?" You deploy the puppy-dog eyes, and... yes. She looks into them. She is in your power. She swallows and nods, her eyes puffy and red from the tears.

"You won't do it again, right?"

She nods silently.

"And even if you do, I think I can learn to be fireproof."

She whines and nestles against your chest. "I'm sorry I reacted so badly."

"You remembered something, then?"

She shakes her head at first, but then shrinks down in your lap and whispers "Maybe a little..."

"Something about 'her'?"

"You can use her name. N... Neya..." She winces and shivers, but doesn't have a reaction anything like the last fit.

You whimper, but nod. "Neya..." You say it like you're spitting out something foul. "What did you remember?"

"I... I remember she used to brush me, but beyond that she doted on me. She always told me stories, an' played with me. My other siblings were too old, an' when Nurrim came along she all but ignored her. She would vanish from time-to-time. I asked Mom, but she always said that it was important stuff for grown-ups and I shouldn't worry about it. I only saw her with the man in white once, but he... he still scares me even now. There was nothing in his eyes. Like he was just a husk."

Is it bad that I can imagine a full-evo, centuries-old Nadia, by this point essentially a living sun, jumping into a bottomless hell-pit for the sole purpose of permanently casting light upon the dark, blighted depths in which the most wicked of monsters spawn?

You rise, settle your hands under her arms and lift her. She dangles limply until you set her on her feet with a smile. "C'mon. Let's go for a quick walk. It'll help clear your head, let you work out all the bad stuff." She looks up at you for a moment, but nods and trots along behind you as you set off ahead of her, stepping through the barrier. You nod to the stones, picking one of the smaller ones out at random and growling at it before you bound out of the clearing. Emma follows you, confusion evident in her features.

You lope along a game path, hearing shouting far in the distance.

"AHHH KILL IT KILL IT KILL IT!"

"Djanna, will you relax!? It's only a giant-"

Followed by the cracking of thunder and a temporary flash of blue light. You shake your head. They seem like they're having fun together. You come to the riverbank and crouch down, scooping up a smooth rock from the side. You rise and with a practiced ease you don't remember ever acquiring, give it a toss with a snap of your wrist. It skips across the surface of the water and Emma "Ooohs" behind you, giving a soft clap.

"How'd you do that?" She asks in awe, looking up at you.

You smile down at her, for the first time properly feeling like an elder sibling. "You want to learn?"

She nods vigorously, and you scoop up another stone before crouching down.

"Okay, hold it in your hand like this, all right? Cradle it with your other fingers, like so, and hold this one along the outside edge. Keep your wrist steady until you release it, then give it a snap." You demonstrate the motion with your own paw and Emma nods brightly. "Ready?" She nods again.

"IT'S GONNA EAT ME!"

"It's not going to eat you, just keep moving and attacking!"
>>
>>40457917
The small girl walks up to the edge of the river and squints, looking out over the silvery water as the sunlight dances across it's surface. She pokes her tongue out of her mouth just like you, and with a yell, she lets the stone fly!

"Plunk," is the only sound as it drops into the river, sinking like... well, a stone.

She slowly turns her face to yours, betrayal in her eyes. You grin sheepishly and lightly run a nail over your cheek, looking up at the treetops. Wow, that is some really interesting canopy.

"Let's try that again..."

Eventually, Emma manages to get her stone to skip twice, and you clap softly in awe of her progress. "Good job! You've come a long way in a short time!"

"S'not that great..." she mumbles, scuffing the pebbles with her shoe. You smile and shake your head with a wag.

"You did really well, don't doubt it! I'm proud of you."

She beams, her tails thrashing, as she does everything she can to avoid your gaze.

"You feel a bit better now?" You lay a hand on her head lightly and she folds back an ear to make room for your hand, closing an eye as you muss her hair gently. She nods and looks up at you.

"I'm sorry. I really am. I keep causing trouble."

"Well, it's not that much of a problem. Your problems are my problems, you know?" You put your hands on your hips, trying to sound cool, but Emma just frowns softly, pressing her fingertips together.

"So it is a problem... I knew-"

"Emma! Nadia! We're back! Come and help us with this!" Your ears perk up, and you turn back. You feel Emma slide her hand into yours. When you look down at her, she's all smiles again.

"C'mon. They worked hard. We should help out too, right?"

You nod and set off back to the glade, your thoughts running ahead of you.

"Djanna."

"Yes, Nadia?"

"Are those?"

"I'm afraid so."

"And she expects us to?"

"Yeah."

"She's trying to kill us, isn't she."

"She might be."

You look down at the coiled snake before you, its head missing and sections of its body charred and clawed as Nurrim has set about cleaving it into sections with a hatchet, blood flying with each impact from the somewhat dull blade. She tsks as she sets it aside, separating a large chunk of reptile meat and running it through a green wood skewer before hanging it over the low fire to roast. She looks up at you and beckons you close. As you approach, it strikes you just how muscular she actually was under the robe. More illusions? You're not sure, but she looked so delicate. For her to have any kind of definition comes as a surprise.

"Eat this."

She holds out a section of the snake to you, raw and dripping.

"...huh?"

"Eat it. Trust me."

"...you want me to eat snake. Raw. Snake."

She nods.

You swallow deeply, taking the glistening cut of flesh from the older woman with a trembling paw. It's still dripping blood and fat, the meat still full of hormones and gore from its pitched battle. It turns your stomach a bit, but something about the smell. You hold it up to your nose and sniff. Something about the iron scent of blood, the odor of adrenaline... you can practically smell the snake's life in the meat, it's struggle to live before it was brought down by a stronger predator. It excites something inside of you, and you sink your teeth into the meat and oooooooooooooh yeah...

You take another bite and chew, swallow, and tear off another chunk. Cooked meat is fantastic; all the spices and different seasonings can create meals worth eating, but this? Eating something that could have killed you, but that was brought down through effort and skill even if it wasn't your own? It feels something like a holy sacrament. You devour the piece of meat, even going so far as to suck the marrow from the vertebrae with a shiver, your tail swishing slowly. You feel a tingle run up your spine and a shiver rock your body from stomach to chest and down your extremities. Nurrim grins up at you.

"Now... do you feel better?"

You come back to your senses, looking down at her. You drop the bit of snake skin you'd been holding and reach up, tentatively touching one of your bandaged burns. It still hurts, but nowhere near as badly as it had when Emma had burned you. You shift one of the bandages to the side, and your eyes widen. The blisters had subsided, the blankened skin regaining its pinkish hue. Some of your fur had even started to regrow!
>>
>>40458498
"It won't completely heal you, mind, and not instantly. You'll still need a good night's rest, but I'd wager you can lose the bandages by morning." Nurrim reaches down to the leather wrap beside her, pulling up a long, thin knife and running it along the snake's belly, liberating skin from muscle and fat. "Most young monsters are taught that when you hunt, and eat what you catch fresh, it has certain benefits. Some monsters are rumored to gain the power of what they eat, but I've never met any. Mostly, it just helps us recover when we're hurt. I don't know how it works, I only know that it does."

You whine softly and stomp your foot. "Then... why didn't you just tell me that in the first place!?"

"I thought it would be funny to see if you really would eat it." She smiles up at you, head slightly tilted. There's no malice in it, but more than a little playfulness. Emma chuckles softly as if she gets the joke, but Djanna just frowns, shaking her head as she moves beside you.

You whine and growl. "That was mean! Why would you do that!?" Your lip quivers, your tail thrashing angrily. Djanna lays a hand on your shoulder, nodding sympathetically. Emma hops over to the fire and pulls the skewer off the flames, sniffing it carefully.

"Now, now. I'm sorry, but you had to learn some time, hmm? You may be a cub, but you are not quite so young any more. There are things you will need to know, I think, that your parents should have taught you." Her smile falls and she turns fully toward you, her breast bindings and skin spattered with blood. "Why... didn't they tell you, anyway?"

You whine softly and shake your head with a shrug. "I'unno... mama always cooked our food, an' I think other cousins hunted for the warren. I don't think I've ever seen anyone eat raw meat..."

"You live close to a human settlement, don't you." It is more statement of fact than question. You and Djanna both nods, and Nurrim turns back to her bloody work with a nod. Carefully, she works her fingers between skin and flesh, peeling back the snake's deep green scales. "I thought as much. Your clothes, the way you act and speak. You are wild, but you are not monsters. Mind you, I'm not judging you. You are, the both of you-" her eyes flick over you and Djanna, "-sweet girls, but it saddens me to see you lose out on knowing your nature."

You tilt your head in confusion, and even Emma now seems a bit lost. "Our nature?" you ask, settling down on your rump. Emma absent-mindedly takes a bit of the rare snake meat she's holding and takes a bite, her ears perking as she apparently likes the flavor, eating indelicately. Nurrim offers Djanna a cut of raw snake, but the dragon girl shakes her head and the elder kitsune skewers it and sets it over the flame to cook before turning to you.

"I suppose I should tell you the story, as it was told to me. From the beginning." She keeps working as she speaks, fingers moving as if on their own.

"In the time before time began, the stars in the sky held every shape imaginable. Human, elf, dwarf, and every creature that walks, crawls, swims, soars, or slithers on this world. The gods, nameless and innumerable, looked down into the firmament and argued amongst themselves as to which shape was the best. Which shone the brightest, which had the most pleasing form. Finally, it was decided that it would be settled amonst the shapes themselves, and so was made this world to give them an arena in which to fight. Into this world, each of the shapes was given flesh and form, and they fought for years beyond counting. Initially, the gods gloried in the slaughter, but soon their hearts were changed.

They saw acts of heroism instead of just brutality: men who would die to protect their families, elves sacrificing themselves to seek out and preserve safe places where they could escape the endless war, and monsters who sought only to be left alone. The gods regretted their frivolous decision, and were ready obliterate their creation... undo their mistake. But, some of them objected."

"'It is not right that we would do this. What is it that we give them life, and then sweep it away?' some said. 'We are above them, why should we not do as we please?' said others."
Nurrim scowled, again taking up her axe and hacking a few more pieces of snake meat free of the whole, skewering them and laying them over the coals, along with another log to bolster the flames.

"While they argued, the monsters and mortals made a sort of peace. Legend says in a land far, far away a great compact was struck, and a city founded where man and monster could live together in peace. I have never seen it myself, and it may never have existed. In the end, by the time the gods attentions turned from their bickering back to their creation, those who desired destruction were sealed away where they couldn't touch the world, and it was decided that the gods would merely observe."
>>
>>40459305
You whine softly, rubbing your head as you take a piece of the meat, handing it to Djanna before taking another piece for yourself. "That's an... interesting story, but I don't see what it has to do with monster nature or... or anything else, really."

Nurrim shakes her head, turning back to the three of you. Emma is watching her, transfixed, as is Djanna. "Sorry, it's been a long time since I've had company and I tend to be long-winded. In short, each of the races was born with a gift, but whereas the mortals are subtle, those of the monsters are more apparant. We heal by eating fresh kills, we are stronger than our mortal counterparts by far, and moreover we can evolve." She levels a finger, looking down her nose at you.

"Well... I fell asleep and had a dream. When I woke up, I was different. Is that evolvings?" You take a bite of your meat, tugging it off the skewer as you regard Nurrim curiously.

She nods, but frowns. "'Evolution,' dear... and it happens to everyone differently. Some people hear a voice, others see the shapes to be, but it always happens when you're asleep. Maybe the changes are too traumatic for an awake mind to process. I don't know... but it seems that, subconsciously, you have some control over what form you change into. Or... maybe it has something to do with how you act? Like, you don't become who you want to be, just closer to what you are..." She looks down at her claws for a moment with a frown, then shakes her head hard enough to flap her ears.

"So, I'll keep getting bigger? I'll keep evolving?"

Nurrim nods. Emma looks at you and Djanna, then at Nurrim. "What about me?"

Nurrim smiles and puts a few more skewers of meat on the fire. "All of you, dears. All of us. The higher you climb, the stronger you are and the longer you live. How do you think I lived for three hunderd years already?"

"So how did you evolve so much? How do you get stronger?" Djanna seems keenly interested in this, idly running her claws over her throat. You think you still see some darkened bits of flesh in roughly the shape of fingers. You whine softly, laying a hand on her knee.
>>
>>40460358
"You fight. You kill... and you win." She brings the hatchet down, another spray of blood rising from the snake's corpse, several droplets streaking across her cheek. Emma winces, and you whine, but Djanna seems interested. "The essence of all of our races is fighting and struggle. If the story of our origins is true, it only makes sense. Lucky for us that there is so much in the world that deserves being destroyed. Monsters - real ones - that kill and hurt people for no better reason than they can, or people like us, or the mortals, who turn on their fellows. Predators amongst predators, dangers to everyone. There are noble ways to kill, children. Just be sure you don't ever lose the boundary line between nobility and depravity."

You whine in confusion, and Nurrim sighs. "Never hurt people except those who deserve it. Bad people." You perk up and nods, tail wagging as you take another bite of your snake.

"So you... you look like you've evolved too..." you chew on your dinner, trying to ignore the implications. She nods, continuing to butcher the snake, peeling the skin back to expose the meat before carving it into manageable hunks. "How... how many times?"

She rubs her cheek with the back of her hand, frowning in thought. For a moment, she looks a little like an older version of Emma. "Mmm... twice now. The first time I got more tails and stronger magical abilities, and the second time I got faster."

"Woooow..." you whisper softly. "What else can they do!?"

She sets the axe aside and stands, pressing her palm flat against the opposite shoulder and rolling it about. You hear it popping as she rotates it. "There's really no kind of limit. I've seen lamia with horns and fans down their backs, dragons with six wings, and that monster of an orc. Seriously, even for a greenskin he's freakishly strong." You think back to Garush tearing his door from the frame with a single blow. Somehow, thinking that he's an exception to the rule makes you feel a little better. None the less, you shake off the reverie.

"It really is unique to the individual monster." She says, shaking out her tails and crossing to the fire, taking a chunk of meat for herself and eating at it ravenously. "You could travel for years and not even see one in five of the things in the world there are to see. Who's to say in the end what evolution is capable of?"
>>
>>40461059
You sit, somewhat awestruck, considering the possibilities. You look to Djanna, for the moment considering the change in her coloration. Was that evoltuion? Surely she'd have told you if she'd had an odd dream or heard a voice. Your eyes fall next on Emma, the small kitsune worrying her meat off the bone with her small teeth. She hadn't changed at all since the day you'd met. You didn't mind, of course, but still. Did it come and happen at different times for different monsters? You mind swam with questions.

Still, shortly after dinner, Nurrim claps her hands. "All right. We've all had a long day. Let's slip off to the springs before we rest, hmm?"

"That sounds nice, but what's a spring?" you asked, tail wagging behind you. Emma smiles, and hops to her feet.

"It's really nice! It's like... Like a really hot bath, but it bubbles up from underground and it's always warm! you can go and you can soak for hours, and... and..."

The tiny girl bounces in place, tails thrashing in excitement. You can't help but smile, her excitement contagious. You stand and reach out a hand to help Djanna to her feet.

"Oh, so you remember that, mm?" Nurrim grins, slipping into the glade and returning a moment later with a silk bag. "I have something else that may jog your memory..." The younger kitsune's tail shakes, but Nurrim just grins and sets out upriver. You hurryalong after her, Djanna and Emma in tow. Half an hour passes, and you come to a small group of deep, steaming pools in the ground. Thry smell somewhat like home, and you can't help but smile.

Also, sorry for the delay. I take a medication that makes me amazingly drowsy, and the dose hit me a little hard tonight. Had to rack out when I got back for about twenty minutes. Your patience is appreciated.
>>
>>40462953
You run up to the edge of the pools, panting softly as you look down into the cloudy, steaming water. It's then that you realize you really have no idea what the hell you're doing. You look back at the dragon and the two kitsune with a whine, pacing back and forth before you start jogging around the outside of the largest pool, looking down into the depths, your tail quivering behind you. Finally, you stop, and with a final whine you pinch your nose and hold your breath. You leap from the edge and sink in over your head, the warm water enveloping you.

The heat seeps into your skin, relieving the slight ache that travel has left in your joints, and your bandaged wounds tingle. The heat is somewhat uncomfortable in your burns, but it's not horribly painful. You rise, breaking the surface, and you gasp for a breath. Djanna is grinning at you as she strips off her clothes, Emma unabashedly pointing and laughing. Nurrim slowly unwinds her breast bindings, before slipping out of her pants and joining you in the spring. "Silly thing. You should have taken your clothes off first. It's going to be a long, cold walk home now." Your eyes fall on the older woman's form in the fading sunlight, and you can't help but blush, sinking below the surface past your nose. You can't recall even ever having seen your mother in the nude, and Djanna and Emma... there was nothing really to think about with seeing them in the bath.

Still, soon enough, everyone is soaking in the spring, your sodden clothes laid over a stone to dry. You paddle through the water, tail held above like a periscope. You dive and come back up again, shaking your head vigorously and causing your hair to puff up every which way. Emma holds up her hands, giving a frustrated squeal as she tries to shield herself from the spray, cupping her hand in the water and throwing it at you in response.
>>
>>40463660
"Girls, no splashing. Come on, now, just relax and enjoy the soak." Nurrim is leaning against the edge of the pool, a cloth over her face. She'd scrubbed clean after entering the pool, and now seemed content to just enjoy the heat of the spring. Djanna was settled beside her, casting furtive glances between the woman's body and her own. Jealousy or what, you're not sure, but there's something in the dragon's eyes as she regards the elder kitsune.

You whine softly, and grin at Emma. "Yeah, Emma. No splashing!" The young girl frowns and vanishes under the surface. You whine, looking about for her, before you feel something tug you under. You come up sputtering, shaking yourself off again, and Emma surfaces a distance away, cackling. You growl softly and move toward her, intent on a revenge dunking until Nurrim snaps her fingers. "Girls!"

You whimper and Emma flinches, turning back to the older woman. She sits upright, reaching behind her on the bank and grabbing the small bag she'd retrieved from the glade. "If you want to play, I have something that might help... and keep us all a bit more unmolested." She pulls something from inside, flat and somewhat cracked, though you can tell the colors were once vibrant. She unfolds it, irregular stitching covering the surface. and presses one of the stitches to her lips. She inhales deeply and exhales into it, and the strange form begins to inflate. You wag under the surface of the water, the resistance causing your tail to move sluggishly, as you realize what it is.

"Ball! Ball ball ball!" You paddle over to her, smiling brightly and wagging wildly. Emma drifts over behind you, oddly quiet. Nurrim smiles down at the two of you and nods.

"Yes, Nadia... but you have to be careful. It's a very, very old ball. And very special. It's-"

"Mine..." Emma reaches out carefully and Nurrim tosses it to her. She gasps and catches it, looking down at it in awe. The paint is cracked and faded, the bladder-like material carefully maintained, but still somewhat thin in places. Emma cradles it in her hands like it's something fragile. "I remember this. We used to come to the springs to wash up, and we'd play with this. Mother always brought it along. Nurrim, you always-" She gasped and shook her head, looking over at the elder kitsune. Nurrim just smiled at her and nodded.

"Go play, big sister."

Emma bit her lower lip, tears in her eyes and nodded. She looked to you with an ecstatic grin. "Nadia! Djanna! C'mon!" She swims backward to the other edge of the pool and you follow along, Djanna looking to Nurrim before moving to join you. Carefully, Emma tosses the ball into the air before giving it a gentle bump, sending it sailing toward you. You respond in kind, sending it back to Emma, who sends it to Djanna. The dragon girl misses it entirely, the ball bouncing off her forehead and landing in the water behind her. She frowns, angling forward and giving it a flick from below with her tail, sending it skipping across the surface of the water toward you. You scoop it up and serve it back to Emma, who catches it and holds it for a moment before looking to the elder fox. "Nurri!"

The older girl looks as if her heart may melt. Emma bounces the ball toward her, and she catches it with a bright smile and tears in her eyes.

The evening passes into full dark, and the four of you relax in the spring, spent, as foxfire dances about in the air overhead.

You gather up your things and trudge toward home, the day having taken far too much out of you for how little actually happened. Your mind swims with questions, about Neya and evolution, about the man in white and just how being a monster actually works. You wonder why Nurrim seemed to have such disdain for your family living so close to a human settlement, and why Emma remembering her history fills you with a strange sense of dread.

The younger girl dozes on your back, her arms around your neck. You shift her carefully, careful not to wake her, as you walk back toward the glade. Soon enough, you're back inside the domain, and settling Emma in amongst the furs. You yawn and stretch, hanging your clothes on a branch to finish drying out. Nurrim sets the deflated ball back inside the chest she retrieved it from initially, and starts to focus in preparation to change shape.

"Wait..." you call out to her, stifling a yawn with one of your paws. She turns to you with a confused look.

"You don't need to hide under there tonight. You can sleep out here with us if you want to." You settle in beside Emma, cross-legged, and set about combing your claws through your tail to work the fur into something roughly resembling order. She smiles and looks down at Emma, then at you.

"I appreciate the invitation. I may take you up on it soon, but for now... I would rather the invitation come from Emma. I have to follow her lead. Today... getting to play with her again... that was enough for now. I think you were right. Best not to press things, mm?" Djanna nods her agreement and you whine, but hesitantly nod. She bids the two of you good night, and with a moment of concentration assumes her vulpine form and darts out of sight between the chests.

"I just don't get it..." you shake your head, your hair all but beyond redemption from the minerals in the water and the lack of a brush in your pack. Djanna sighs and settles in on the other side of Emma, shrugging.

"Family is weird for everyone, I think. At least that's the impression I'm getting. They all have their problems. Some worse than others."

You nod in agreement as you lay down beside the small kitsune, stretching out, and Djanna does the same. "Well... whatever happens, at least we'll be together. Right?" The dragon girl nods.

========================

You stand on top of the Skyteeth, looking down at the world below you. A sense of calm pervades your entire being. At your side are two faceless figures, small and weak, cowering in your shadow, but not from you. Ahead of you looms a a shadow, six wings and blazing hate in its eyes.

It lunges, and you feel claws tear into you, drawing blood and rending flesh. Still, you don't back down. You grab hold of the creature, crushing it to you as it shrieks and flails, trying to break free. You feel a warmth deep in your core as you squeeze the beast, your muscles flexing as you crush the life from it. Soon enough, you release it and the lifeless husk tumbles down the mountainside, into the distance and out of sight.

You look back to the figures, and with pride see they are unharmed.

WILL YOU EVOLVE: GUARDIAN AEGIS (Damage reduction from non-lethal wounds, additional defensive modifiers when guarding others)

You can come back to it later, but remember: These aren't full-form evos. You're gaining small bonuses over time that will eventually lead to a full evo. You made your choice between an attack and defense boost by choosing to defend the faceless figures instead of attacking the shadow straight out.

I prefer the more metaphysical approach rather than presenting it like a character select screen.

I just realized, if we grab this and armor up all knight like and we become a paladin/tank-monk.
Our strength would allow us to dual wield two shields as bucklers while freeing the hands!

You wake late with a start, blinking blearily in the morning sunlight. You are alone in the glade, the domain shimmering all about you. You whimper, rising to your feet and dressing quickly before you step past the barrier into the clearing. Emma and Nurrim are talking as they eat bits of the roast snake from last night, and Djanna is pushing herself through what she remembers of your workout routine. You beam with pride at her before settling in by the two kitsune and help yourself to some breakfast. Emma smiles and gives you a one-armed hug.

"Sorry. You were sleeping so deep, I didn't wanna wake you." You note that, though she grips you directly on one of your burns, they don't hurt at all. You peel back the bandages to find that, indeed, the flesh is pinkish, midway to being fully healed. You marvel at this for a moment before pulling the bandages off entirely, tossing them into the ashes of the cookfire to be burned away this afternoon. Once her snake steak is consumed, Nurrim rises and points to you and Emma. "All right, girls. Since you two didn't come with Djanna and I yesterday, it's your turn to learn how to hunt."

You and Emma both whine softly.

"None of that, now. You wanted me to train her, and so I'm going to, but I think you need it just as much as she does. You're practically helpless when it comes to surviving out on your own, and we need to fix that."

"But why? I don't need to kill big things or eat raw meat all the time, right? I can always just buy what I need."

Nurrim frowns and crosses her arms across her chest. "Nadia... you may think you can trust the humans you've met so far, and maybe you can... but not everyone you meet you can trust. The village you came through on the way here. Did they treat you well?"
>>
>>40465576
You whimper, tucking your tail against your hip and bowing your head. Emma frowns, ears flattening. Nurrim nods. "Most people you meet in this world... as long as you don't try and take something away from them, or cause them trouble, they're all right. Some people, though... it's best to be self-reliant when you can be. Do you understand?"

You nod, your own ears flattening. You don't like the sound of it. It makes it out like people can't be trusted. Sure, there are people like Bertrand in the world, but even the big guy and the skinny guy - you wish you could remember their names - weren't so bad once you got past what they'd been forced to be like.

A few minutes later, and the three of you set out into the woods.

You take point, walking a few steps ahead of the other two, nose to the air and ears pricked with alertness. You sniff the air, the scents of the forest becoming familiar to you. As you follow your nose, you catch a whiff of something familiar. You hear a grumbling, hooting growl ahead and you crouch low to the ground. You creep forward, Emma and Nurrim behind you. As you peer through the underbrush, you see it in a clearing just ahead: the owlbear from the day before, covered in swollen stings, panting and rubbing at its injuries irritably. You whimper softly and turn to retreat, but Nurrim shakes her head.

"That will feed us for a week. The fur is warm, the feathers will make for a fine jacket, and the beak would make good combs. Come now... you don't intend to get stronger by running away from every confrontation, right?"

You whine softly. The owlbear doesn't seem to have noticed you.

Then we wait for it to stop freaking out before hamstringing it

You look to Nurrim, and with a swallow, you nod. "Then... what should we do?" The elder girl beckons you close, taking a stick and clearing a patch of dirt. She sketches a rough approximation of the clearing, marking out the boundaries.

"I'll stay back here and erect a domain to keep it contained. I'll have to stay outside of it, because if you get overwhelmed I need to be able to get in and get you out. I think Emma should distract it with foxfire and her illusions, assuming they'll work. Nadia? You know what to do."

You tilt your head and look at her in confusion. She sighs softly and musses your hair. "Hit it hard."

You smile and nod, tail wagging. Nurrim rises and Emma whispers her spell, blending in with the scenery and slinking off around the back. Nurrim begins chanting and a pearlescent wall of force rises up around the clearing. The owlbear gives a confused hoot, rising on it's haunches and whipping its tufted head around. You shiver, but clench your fists.

No turning back now, Nadia. Time to be a brave girl. A brave... stupid girl... who's going to try and punch out something four times her size.

But hey... n-no pressure, right?

You step into the domain, the wall semi-solid as you pass through, a different, odd sort of sensation from the glade Nurrim calls home. You shudder as the creature roars. spreading its winged arms, bearing its claws. It falls to all fours, readying a charge. Suddenly, the scene shifts, the trees replaced with snowfields, howling wind whipping sheets of white between you and the beast, and dancing spheres of red and green light flitting about all around the owlbear. It snarls, swiping at them and turning as they buzz near it, hooting and roaring at them in fury. It has its side turned to you, giving you an opening.

You kick off the ground, your movement kicking up a little puff of illusory snow behind you. You dash forward, dart to the side, and plant a fist right into the bear's ribs. It roars in pain, jerking to the side and bounding about to face you with an angry, shrill screech. It lunges forward, snapping at you. You recoil, slipping on a root hidden beneath the snow. The world seems to slow to a crawl as you go down. You hear Emma scream your name as the beast lunges atop you, beak snapping over where your neck had been mere moments before. You hit the ground, flat on your back, as the heavy, furry weight of the beast lands atop you, forcing the air out of your lungs.

Your arms are pinned under massive claws, your nose filled with the beast's rancid stench. You feel as if you might vomit, but you haven't got a moment longer to worry over it as the creature's beak descends toward your face.
