This is a quest based on the Phatnasy Star series of video games. You are Pheonixia, a newman force and member of the Hunter's Guild.

* Every 20 minutes, a post will be made with a series of choices to be made. Players may vote on any single or logical combination of choices. The most popular choices voted on within the first 15 minutes will be used.

* Write in votes with sufficient support may also be used.

* After the vote has been decided. The QM will roll relevant dice to determine success rate for the next progress post.

* You can follow Twitter account @sbf2009 for updates between quest sessions. https://twitter.com/sbf2009

* Previous sessions can be viewed on suptg. http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=PSOQ

The difficulty of an action will be stated as part of the choice for the vote, but not the numerical value needed to succeed. You can estimate the roll needed using the chart below.

Dice Roll Difficulty:

> Trivial (1-2): Most Hunter's Guild Members would have little trouble accomplishing this.

> Easy (3-4): Not necessarily difficult, but it would be best to let a specialist take over if available.

> Moderate (5-6): A strenuous task. If your class does not specialize in this kind of task, you may wish to find an easier alternative.

> Hard (7-9): Only an experienced guild member should risk this.

> Heroic (10-15): Not possible by even experienced guild members. Even legendary hunters like Rico Tyrell would hesitate to try such a task.

> Impossible (16+): As it sounds. Such actions defy perceptions of reality.

Quick GM note:

I kinda screwed up the character progression a bit, but just caught it now. Pheonixia bought Resta from the shop, but for some reason I thought Shifta was purchased, so I wrote options with that in mind. Seeing as no one has died yet, the damage is minimal. As a personal apology, Pheonie will be able to use both Resta and Shifta by the time she's ready to go back out into the field.

Last Time:

You awaken in a hospital bed. The room is nicer than the last time you were here, and more notably, private. You find a meal waiting for you. It hurts to even move your arm. You spoon some soup into your mouth, and find yourself unable to finish.

Roughly an hour after you wake up, Colin Tyrell enters your room. “I’m glad to see you’re finally awake.” He pulls up a chair and sits at the foot of your bed. “We have some things to discuss.”

This is the last thing you want to be doing right now, but when Tyrell says jump...well, you at least do so begrudgingly.

“Pheonixia, I would like to know some details as to your role in your latest commission.” His eyes feel like they are burning a hole through the back of your skull.

“Well, there was a commission that wanted me to take them to the Central Dome. Seemed like a great opportunity to learn more about Pioneer I. Just like you asked.”

“Yes, but that does not grant you permission to break the law.” His tone is monotonous, but you can red some irritation on his face.

“What do you mean?”

“Nol Rinale had no clearance to go down to Ragol.”

“Of course not. If I wanted you arrested, I would have done so already. I just wanted to remind you that we still have rules before we get down to business.” Tyrell pulls his chair up next to you and clears off your food tray, replacing it with a tablet displaying some documents and a message capsule. “We have a problem.”

You skim through the documents on the tablet. There are a lot of logistical summaries. It seems that the Central Dome is largely under control. The government even seems to have located a Ryuker conduit and comms room on the roof of the Central Dome.

It seems that the building you fought the hildebear in had a small undocumented weapons cache. It's probably too late to grab something.

Your heart suddenly drops when you get to the last document. It's a battle report from inside the Central Dome. Ash was found in critical condition by Kireek and another hunter you don't recognize. When they carried Ash out of the dome, they were apparently attacked by...a dragon?

“There's a dragon in the Central Dome?”

Tyrell sighs, “The reports are still unconfirmed, but there is certainly something there. That's why I wanted to speak to you. We'll need a team of-”

“I need to see Ash, now!” You jump out of bed. You are surprisingly energetic, considering the wounds you had. Your MAG springs to life around you.

“What are you doing? We aren't done here!” Principal Tyrell reaches out to stop you.

You barge out of room, toward the nurses' desk. “There's a hunter here by the name of Ash, I need to speak to him!”

“Do you have a last name?”

...no, you don't. You never bothered to learn it. You push your guilt aside for your concern.

“I could get fired for this...” She looks at you, “But it seems very important for you to jump out in the hallway with your hospital gown. “I see. Well, you know where he is now. Please don't tell anyone how you found out.” She waves you off.

“Thank you!” You dash toward the elevator.

You make our way through the 15th floor, attracting a fair bit of attention, before barging into Ash's room. Kireek is sitting in a chair next to him. “Figures I'd see you here, too, after last weekend. A bit under-dressed, don't you think?”

You notice that you are wearing a hospital gown, and nothing else. “I'll worry about that later, how is Ash doing?”

“Still recovering. That dragon got him good. Completely crushed his rib cage and burned half his body. It's a miracle I got there when I did, or he'd be scorch mark on the ground right now.”

“Hey, Ash. How are you doing?”

He looks over to you and suddenly becomes alert, straightening himself up. “Ow...crap.” He winces as he adjusts his pillows behind him. “I didn't think you'd be visiting. Not even the guys have come by yet.” His eye start to linger on you just a moment too long, “Uhm...why are you in a gown? What happened to you?”

“Hildebear got me and a few friends. We finished it off, but got a bit hurt in the meantime.” You take a few steps closer to the bed. “How long are you in for?”

“They say I can leave tomorrow morning, once the sedatives finally wear off. Modern medicine, eh?” He gives a short chuckle.

Kireek leaves the room. You take a seat next to Ash.

“So, is there anything I can get you?”

“Well, once we're both out of here and properly dressed, you could let me buy you dinner.”

“Are...you asking me out on a date?”

Ash laughs, “No, the pain killers are. I'm just letting them.” He leans back into the raised bed, “Never mind, I'm an idiot. You want to hear about the dragon, right?”

Ash seems a bit out of it, but you need this information. “Well I don't want to impose.”

“You could never impose.” He clears his throat. You hand him a cup of water sitting on a nearby food tray. “Thanks. I didn't get a good look at it, but it was big, red, and angry. Breathed fire, as you can expect, and it seems to live inside the Central Dome. Everything in the rotunda is scorched and melted. I think I even saw some lava in there.”

“And there's no way of getting control of the Central Dome without taking this thing out, is there?”

“Not without it moving on somewhere else.” Ash grunts as he sinks back into bed. “If you're going to take this thing out, please take me with you!”

“You're in no shape to be fighting!”

“And you're half naked with a medical patch on your arm!” He looks at your arm, drawing your gaze to the pain killer delivery system on your left arm. “It's not like either of us are in fighting shape right now. I know Tyrell wants you to find a way past that dragon. I want in. Please, Pheonixia.”

“Sure thing, Ash. You'll be my first pick. That dragon is going down!”

“Good to hear. It'll be nice to work together again.” Ash falls asleep.

You stick around for a few minutes until Kireek comes back in. “He's asleep again, eh? Well, no point in you sticking around, I'm sure Tyrell wants to hear from you again pretty soon.”

“Alright, thanks.” You turn to head out before hearing a robotic whistle. You turn to glare at Kireek as he laughs.

“Hey, newmans don't do anything for me, but you are asking for attention walking around with your ass out there. I hope you plan on getting dressed before you meet with anyone else.”

You grumble angrily.

“Just be careful with Ash,” he continues, more sincerely. “He's a good kid with a lot of potential. I'd hate to see him waste that potential chasing around a force instead of training.”

“We're just friends, Kireek...”

Two days out of the hospital, you come to the principals office for a meeting with Principal Tyrell. You talk about the mission and logistics in great detail, but it essentially boils down to you and a team of hunters going to exterminate a dragon.

“You and your team will be equipped with an upgraded frame and a heat resistance unit. This should mitigate the dragon's fire breath and the temperature inside the dome. Once this dragon is gone, we can get comms in the Central Dome and finally establish a permanent presence.”

“Thank you, Principal.”

There's not too much traffic in the shops today. You quickly get to the front of the line and hand over your guild card. The selection has improved a bit.

> A. Gifoie – An advanced fire technique that spreads flames in an ever expanding circle

> B. Gizonde – Chain electricity from your casting focus strikes consecutive enemies

> C. Gibarta – Icicles spray in a cone, freezing anything in its path

>Equipment malfunction requires a pretty wide gap between a needed roll, and is not common unless you are trying to do something unusual. For instance, you guys bought Shifta but never actually trained it, so you were trying to use an already difficult to use technique that you've never used before under duress. Shit happens. I wouldn't worry about it.
it was the combination of the crit fail and trying to do something untrained

Crit fail? We rolled a five.

So the factors involved in the high DC were 'already difficult', 'never used', and 'under duress'. Practicing it would have only reduced one of those factors. Meanwhile the DC was probably around a nine, meaning a four point difference. A flubbed non-crit on a moderate difficulty task could potentially have the same gap.

You purchase Deband. You insert the subroutine chip into the wand, but have your MAG make a backup should anything go wrong. Now, on to the defense vendors.

The shop is well populated by burly hunters describing the very minutia of Photon density and responsiveness, along with comparing frame latency, barrier coverage, and topics only a Photon engineer would be able to stay awake for. You make a note to come by hear when you have free time to chat with the regulars.

You assemble your team on the shuttle. The four of you are set to land in a base camp near the Central Dome.

Maiawynn gives a short glare to Ash. “I get the rest of the group, but I fail to see why we need to let the little boy join in. I'm all the hunter this group needs.”

“Maia, he belongs in this group just as much as you,” you snap back. “Technically, he has the most experience fighting dragons out of the four of us. Besides, I promised he'd get a second shot at it.”

“We'll need all the help we can get.” Eleanor adds, in her usual disarming fashion.”

You land not far from one of the entrances to the central dome. The metal has been melted over the entrance-way, blocking passage.

You decide to bring the party around the perimeter of the Central Dome, hoping for an easier way in.

Maiawynn walks up next to you. “Wasn't that the main entrance back there? What are we looking for?”

You come around a corner to see a massive tunnel littered with concrete and melted steel leading underneath the Central Dome.

“Something like that, I guess?” you answer, as dumbfounded as Maiawynn.

You make your way through the dark tunnel. Into a large rotunda, dimly lit by a handful of lava pools. There is no dragon in sight.

You raise your cane and reinforce the party with photon energy. Everyone is surrounded by a blue aura.

“We can do this guys, let's go!” You wave the group forward.

Ash and Maia take point while you and Eleanor shore up the rear.

As you come up to the center of the room, the ground shakes. A massive red dragon rises upwards in a jet of lava and crashes down in front of the party. You are unmoved. Fire wells up in its mouth as it rears its head back.

“Everyone! Dodge!”

Maia and Eleanor roll right. Eleanor rights herself into a kneeling stance and starts taking shots at the dragon. Maia rushes the dragon's legs.

You stumble and fall on the uneven ground.

Ash turns around. “Pheonixia!” He puts himself between you and the dragon's fire just as it is exhaled. Ash is blasted into the air, tumbling on the the ground.

You run over to Ash, he's covered in first to degree burns. You honestly expected worse. Resta restores him and he charges toward the dragon to join Maia. Eleanor is doing her best to find some weak spots around its face with her rifle, but the dragon seems more annoyed than anything.

The dragon sweeps with its tail. Ash and Maia are knocked back but unharmed. It takes to the air and fireballs are haphazardly dropping throughout the rotunda.

You gather all the electrical energy in the Central Dome's frame and drive it right into the dragon's spine. The sparks and arcing make and impressive display.

The Dragon is pissed. It begins a dive aimed at you and Ash.

You and Ash sidestep the dragon. It produces a deafening grinding sound as its hard scales grind against hot concrete.

Maia is not far behind with her sword, hacking away at the tail. Ash starts working at the neck. Eleanor continues taking shots from behind the dragon.

You attempt to cast Barta, but the dragon reacts too quickly. With a flap of its wings, everyone is pushed back as the dragon takes to the air again. It flips to point its noes straight down and dives into a pool of molten metal some tens of meters away. The ground shakes beneath you.
