There’s a Falcon Harpy perched on your shoulder, a sword at your hip, and determination in your stride. Your name is Adria, daughter of Sylea, and you have just taken your first steps towards fame, fortune, and the world beyond.

To be more concise, you’re going to go on a quest. Not a quest to save the world or anything (though you feel those are probably more interesting), but rather just a normal everyday quest. The types of things that people would call jobs, or even errands at times, except for the fact that Job are already such an intrinsic part of life.

“Ohhh a quest yes?” Sree grins excitedly. “Heard about some good ones, if you want to know!”

“Ones that’ll accept us?” You ask. That’s been the biggest worry leading up to today. Reiln has plenty of adventurers, so some of the more… close-minded people around the city can afford to be picky.

Undercut wages and job restrictions are something you remember well from your past life, and you want as little to do with them as possible this time around.

“Yes yes! But first-” She fluffs up her wings and stands up straight, trying to look bigger than she is. The effect is kinda ruined, with how she’s standing on your shoulder and all. “Payment.”

You sigh “Skinflint. You’re going to bleed me dry at this rate.”

“Deals are deals, yes.”

You reach into your pouch and pull out your ‘payment’. “Whatever, you baby bird.” You toss the small cube of seasoned fish up into the air, and Sree snaps it up. “Don’t you think it’s time you started learning to feed yourself?”

She smirks. “Not if you always have tasties, yes?”

“Serves me right, for being such a bleeding heart.” You say with a chuckle.

(Cont.)
>>
>>40481151
Sree gives you a concerned look. “Fishy, if your heart was bleeding, you’d be dead.”

“Just a figure of speech, tell me about those jobs?” When Sree nods you catch a glimpse of red out of the corner of your eye. Your head snaps around, but it’s gone again. Tymera’s blood you still can’t lay eyes on her and it’s the middle of the day!

Sree bumps you on the head with her wing. “Hey!” You shout.

“Fishy, you weren’t listening.”

“Right sorry.” You rub the back of your head “carry on.”

She gives you a piercing stare before nodding, satisfied that you are paying a suitable amount of attention to her majestic form. You really aren’t exaggerating, that’s what she told you to do once. Who knew Falcons were so conceited?

“So yes, there is a beginner dungeon nearby that a small group will be raiding. Rumors that an old adventurer made his… ‘last rest’ there. But it’s underground, so he could not have made a nest or a house…” You laugh silently as she just shrugs. “And a caravan heading to the sea. They will be going through the Riverlands.” She nods in approval at their choice. “Good time of year for migration, for Falcons too.”

“No wonder you’ve been so jittery lately.” She nods again, happy that you’ve got her point.

You’re debating which job you should take when a loud voice gains your attention.

“Adria! Oy, Adria!”

You turn around, leaving Sree squawking and fluttering as she tries to regain her balance. “Aunt Neru?”

Yep, there she is, spider parts and all. Actually, the new addition seems to be the giant two handed broadsword strapped across her back (It’s almost as tall as you are!), though knowing you’re aunt she probably wields it like you would a dagger.
>>
>>40481166
She grins as she pulls to a stop next to you. “Heard you’re gonna take yah first quest today.” She says. “Wanna come with me? I heard there were some monsters skulking ‘round the city from tha guard, was gonna see ‘bout clearing them out.”

You glance to Sree, who shuggs.

“Course,” Neru continues, “Yah don’t have to come with. I can handle them all myself. Think of it as… family bonding time!”

What do you want to do?

>Go see about the Caravan, heading South sounds interesting.
>Join the party heading to the beginner dungeon, it’ll be leaving soon.

“Some monsters huh? Sounds like fun.” With Neru, it should be easy enough. Who knows, maybe you can swing back around and take a look at some of the other stuff. “Where are they?”

Neru smiles happily. “Somma the guards said they saw some smoke in the hills to tha west a’ the City. With the two of us we should be able to clear out the camp pretty easily. ‘Specially if Sree comes along.”

You glance over at your harpy friend, she nods. “Interesting! Haven’t hunted big things before.” She says.

“Sounds like a plan.” You say. Well, it’s a plan when you have an Arachnae on your side. The giant spider ladies are crazy strong.

“Excellent, yes!” Neru starts heading towards the main gate, and Sree takes to the air as you begin jogging alongside your aunt. “Even better, the guards have put a bounty out on the camp. So we’ll get something out of this for sure.”

You chuckle. “Lazy asses, can’t be bothered to go do their job so they pay people like us to do it.”

Neru shrugs. “That is the way things are yes?”

You nod once. “Say, Neru, why do you still stay around here?” You ask. “I mean, it’s not like you couldn’t go to other places. There have to be other parts of the world where people won’t dis-” You almost say ‘discriminate’ but that word barely exists. How wrong is that? “-like you just because you’re an Arachnae.”

“I have good friends here.” She says. “And I have found that people do not often insult arachnae to our faces. What they say behind their doors is not concern of mine.”
“That’s a good point.” Still, you don’t feel like you could be as ambivalent as your aunt is. But there will be time to worry about things like that later, for now, how do you want to approach the camp?

You and Neru keep to the valleys as you approach the camp. With a signal, Sree goes even higher into the sky, shrinking until she could be a normal falcon scouting out its next meal. Looking up, you can see her adopt the languid glide favored by predators on the wing.

The camp is some distance from the City, and as you get closer you see wisps of smoke in the air a few hills away. “Let’s get to that hill” You point. “It should give us a good view of the camp.”

Neru nods. “You’ll crawl up ‘n take a look eh?” She says. “ ‘M not exactly sized for sneaking about.”

You climb up to the crest of the hill and peak over. On the far side you see two pig men, Orcs if you remember your lessons right, and a goblin. Both Orcs are armed with spears and seem like they have some crude armor on, but the goblin only has a dagger.

There’s another small hill in the way to the right, and you can see two plumes of smoke, a short distance apart rising up into the air. You shake your head, no wonder these idiots tipped of the guards. Still, they were smart enough to post some lookouts (even if they’re doing a terrible of spotting you).

But are they monsters or Monsters? Goblins are usually just merciless raiders, but the jury is still out on Orcs… Sometimes they just act like savages. Most of the time actually, but occasionally they’re not… as bad.

Having an armed camp near the city almost speaks for itself though doesn’t it? You –could- be mistaken, ostensibly. But short of going up to the lookouts and seeing if they try and make a spit roast out of you, there’s no way to verify their intentions.

After waiting a few more moments with no change, you crawl back down the hill. As you stand up and lead Neru away from the camp. If there’s one thing your last life taught you it’s that having a plan of action never hurts.

Also, maybe Sree saw something you missed. You know, something obviously incriminating would be nice. Well, the weapons are pretty incriminating yes, but you’ve made it part of your creed to not just people solely by appearance and you want to stick to your guns!

Too bad that phrase doesn’t really translate… Stick to your bows? Now that just sounds dumb.

You stop a few hills away and motion for Sree to land, she swoops down light lightning, flaring her wings at the last seconds before landing gently on your shoulder. Yeah, even if the orcs were looking in her direction they would have missed her dive.

Sadly for you, despite how good she is at holding on without bruising you, you hear a rip as her talons tear the fabric of your tunic once more. You sigh “Sree, you owe me another shirt.”

She ruffles her feathers. “Just ask Spider for one! Then it won’t ever tear.”

You huff. “She charges through the nose.” You mutter. “Anyway, what did the rest of their camp look like? All I saw were two orcs and a goblin with spears and such.”

“More, yes?”

“Just more?”

She nods. “Two campfires, more orcs, more goblins. Ten all together.”

Huh. “That’s it though? There were no prisoners or anything like that?”

“There was a deer. They were eating it.”

(Cont.)
>>
>>40482994
Neru crosses her arms thoughtfully. “Just raiders then. ‘N dumb ones at that.” She says. “So how yah want to handle this Dria? Think ya can come up with a good plan?”

“Sure.” You say. “But… how are you sure they’re just bandits?”

She shrugs. “Nothin’ to sell, carrying too many weapons, aren’t hunters cause they only got one deer.” Seems like that’s a pretty decent point. Okay, you’re going to assume they’re bandits then. If they throw down their weapons and surrender you’ll feel embarrassed, but at least you won’t end up with a spear in your gut because you were too trusting.

“Okay then.” You nod. “This is how we’ll do it.”

“We’ll lead them into an ambush!” You say triumphantly. “There’s a really narrow pass between two steeper than normal hills over there, we’ll lure them into it. Plus, if they chase that means they actually are Raiders, and not just some orcs who don’t know how to hunt!”

Neru chuckles. “You’re a bit preoccupied with that aren’t yah.” You blush, glancing away as she continues. “But yah do know this means you’re the bait right?”

“Huh?” You blink.

“What, yah think a bunch a’ orcs are gonna go after an Arachnae?” She asks. “Sure they may tell me ta’ “Hand over all of my money!” but if I say ‘no’ you think they’re gonna try an’ make me?”

“Well… no, but-”

“An’ Sree is pretty much built for ambush yah know? She just hovers up high, no one the wiser, and then ‘whoosh!’ swoops down on them before they know what hit ‘em.” Sree preens at the praise… and Neru has a good point.

Your friends really aren’t well suited to be ‘bait’. And, unfortunately, you are. Now that’s a confidence booster. You huff and cross your arms. “Fine. I’ll lure them into the valley, but that means you need to build traps! You’re the spider after all.”

She slumps, “Do I hav’ to?” She whines. “I’m not a weaving spider, Imma hunter! Using that much thread’ll give me a headache for the rest of the day!”

You look down, well up, at her impetuously. “If I have be bait for a mob of slobbering, rapacious, monsters, then the least you can do is weave up some decent traps. It’s not like you don’t have web to work with, right?”

(cont.)
>>
>>40483845
“Well, yeah.” She says. “But… it’s a bunch of hills! And- and it’s the middle a’ the day, they’ll see my traps. ‘s not like we need them or anything.”

You grin. “Nu-uh. I’m the leader of this operation. You said so yourself. So I want some decent traps set up in the valley, even if they’re just trip wires.”

She puffs out her cheeks, and looks ready to concede before she gets another idea. “But you have ta go thru the valley to don’tcha? How will you see the webs?”

You toss your hair. “I’m sure I’ll manage, it’s the middle of the day after all.”

Sree chortles. Covering her mouth with one wing.

“… Fine.” With a huff, Neru turns and starts skittering to the assigned valley. “Give me ten minutes!” Sree launches herself into the air, circling back towards the city before rising. You, for your part. Head over to the camp once more.

After ten minutes have passed, you walk up to the lookouts.

“Hey!” You call from about ten yards away. “What are you all doing here?”

The orcs look at each other. One of them oinks, a few times before slowly walking towards you. Well, you’ve been in enough relationships to see where this is going.

“You here *snort* alone humi?” It asks.

You take a step back, nodding.

“Then you can comes over here?”

“No thank you.” You take another step back. You notice that the rest of the camp is on their feet now, moving towards you. “I think I’ll just be going now, the city guard will probably want to know you’re here.”

You turn around just as the lead orc shouts “Get hers!” And you take off sprinting towards the ambush point.

Roll 2d100, first is for running, second is for avoiding traps.

You run through the valley like wind across a field, leaving the tall grass rippling in your passage. Behind you the sound of pursuit quickly begins to fade, a bit too quickly actually… You glance over your shoulder. They’ve almost lost sight of you between the hills.

Tymera’s blood they’re slow. You wanted to lead them to the trap, not lose them in your dust! You slow down, letting the goblins close some distance as they are (unsurprisingly) faster than the Orcs. You throw in a fake stumble or two for good measure, and then you’ve reached the alley.

The trip lines are easy enough to pick out, and you run through them without breaking a stride, placing your feet more or less perfectly. By now you have it so that the goblins are only ten or so paces behind you. You clear the last of the traps and spin around, a wide grin on your face as the goblins charge (gleefully, idiotically) into their demise.

The first three fall flat on their faces, and two more get caught on the same line and end up rolling through the whole mess, ending up wrapped in more thread than they know what to do with.

The last one manages to pull up short. As do the orcs. Well, that’s a good thing, with how many gobs went down you were almost worried that there wouldn’t be any left for-

Sree sweeps down and plucks the last Goblin into the air. His dagger drops to the ground with a dull thud.

The orcs gape, you giggle. All in all it’s perfect timing when Neru bursts over the crest of the hill and sends two of the four orcs flying away. She stampedes after them eager to finish the job.

You run past the struggling goblins, more than enough time to deal with them later. The orcs snap out of their gapping stupor, trying to get their spears at the ready. You zone in on the closest one and lay your off hand upon the metal of your blade.

“Burst!” Lighting surges down your hand and into the metal like it was made to be there. You grin even wider as the orcs stumble back in shock. This is just measly electricity you’re wielding, it’s an extension of your body! You can feel it rushing through you and into your blade, making the metal spark and whine.

It tries to get his spear up in time, but it doesn’t matter, your lighting coated blade sheers through the wooden haft like a hot knife through butter. The tip draws a gash across its chest, and it jerks as the electricity courses into it, shearing through the crude iron armor.

Nothing can stop you.

As the orc drops in a limp, smoking heap, you turn to its counterpart and flick the burning blood off your blade. You can see the fear in its eyes as it draws back it’s spear to stab.

A part of me wants to be sadistic and have an elf reincarnate into a human body, but you've obviously got that niche filled.

Maybe I'll find something equally shortlived. Or have a dwarf reincarnate as an elf.

As it tries to stab at you, you try to side step, drawing your sword back to finish the job. But it’s too quick! The Orc reads your counter and the spear head plunges into your gut.

“Oof-!” You stumble backwards as the air rushes out of your lungs. Heat and pain washes over the left side of your stomach. It must have pierce your cuirass! Luckily, your stumble takes you back out of reach, as it jabs again.

“Adria!” You hear Neru cry. But she’s too far away, the orc’s already coming back in for another stab. The fear in its eyes has been replaced with bloodlust as it pushed the advantage. You fend off another blow but you’re off balance!

The orc doesn’t let up, closing again for the coup de ‘grace.

Your foot slides back, planting itself firmly on the ground. You grip your sword with both hands, feeling the lightning surge through it.

Neru is coming, but she’s just a step too far away. Like hell you’re going to let her take this from you.
The orc charges, spear raised, saliva dripping from its maw.

And like hell. Are you letting this monster. BEAT YOU!

“GRAAAAAH!” You swing your blade up, and you do the one thing your spell books told you to never EVER do.
You let the lightning loose.

It tears from the blade, lancing forward with a scream. You can feel the spell tearing itself from your fingers, eager to be free. At the last second you grasp at it again, trying to get some semblance of control, of direction, but it’s too late! The magic doesn’t belong to you anymore.

The crack of thunder blasts you off your feet. But right before you hit the ground you see it strike its target like the hammer of Nachmar, killing the orc in a single strike.

You hit the ground hard, rolling ass over teakettle until you slowly, painfully, come to a stop.
Gods above that hurt.

You everything hurts. A lot.

You lie there on the ground, looking up to the sky, as muscles you didn’t even know you had ache and twitch from the after effects of your spell. You lost your sword too, it’s somewhere… not here.

Slowly, you force yourself to roll over. The effort makes you whimper. Gods above.

Your friends are here, all that’s left are the goblins. Surely you’ve done your part. You’ve done as much as the gods damned giant spider! Surely you’ve earned a break now…

You grit your teeth as a harsh laugh escapes your lips. Didn’t think you were a quitter, now did you Adria?

You place your palms flat on the ground.

Did you give up when Ben, your Benjamin went off to war and left you with a child and an empty house? No!

You push, trembling arms fighting to raise you off the ground, to raise you to your knees.

Did you give up when you went to work, nine hours a day on an assembly line, lifting metal pipes bigger than your arm? NO!

One foot on the ground. You move your hands to your knees. Every muscle screaming out with the effort as your other leg begins to come off the ground.

And did you give up when Benjamin died, did you give up when you grew older alone, did you give up when YOU died? NO YOU DID NOT!

With a wordless cry you force yourself back to your feet, head thrown back in triumph. This is your life, and you will live it to the fullest!
>>
>>40486275
You are bleeding. You are singed. You are unarmed. Your arms and legs still spasm when you try and move them. You can barely even keep yourself upright.

The last goblin takes one look at you and runs away screaming.

Ha! Serves them right… oh boy… that took more energy than you thought. You sway once, then Neru catches you.

“Gods girly.” She says, but you can see the grin on her face. “Just wait till yer ma hears ‘bout this one!”

You shake your head, sweat dripping down your bangs. “Let’s just… let’s just loot their campsite.” They have to have loot right? Please let them have loot. This will all be worth it if they just have something good.

Any questions before the end of the thread?
Also, how did I do gents?

Pretty good, Only thing i can think of to improve would be how long you can do the quest for really
>>
>>40486345
all things considered, great.
>>
>>40486358
Four and half hours isn't quiet good enough anon? XD

But really, there's a limit to how long I can run. I'm trying to make up for it by running often instead of long.

How does everyone feel about another thread tomorrow? I should be able to swing it. I might need... one more day to plan, but I think I can get the remnants of my original plot back in order.

In in end, Neru carries you back home.

Your mom is (rightly, you remember being in her situation) distraught. And she hurries you into your bed, tending to your wounds with that odd mix of tenderness and scolding that only a mother can accomplish. You just lay back and let it happen, agreeing with her on every point on how you were much too reckless, and how you should have just waited for Neru to help, and how you (“by the love of all that is holy!”) should never play around with spells like that.

Heh, you still pulled it off. And there was some loot in the end. Not much, but more than you expected from a small group of raiders like that.

You think over it as you drink the herbal tea your mom made for you. She’s sitting next to you bed, talking with Sree (who’s spending the night to look after you) and Neru.

There was an odd leather vest that only covered one shoulder, and a matching glove that covers the back of your forearm like a gauntlet. Both were rather scuffed, but all the straps were still intact. It was more well used than anything, and you know the signs of good maintenance when you see them. Whoever owned it before the Orcs took good care of it.

Other than that, it’s just a few copper and silver coins, and a strange compass that points to different locations. Right now its lingering in a south east direction, strange.

The reward from the guards was ten gold pieces. Neru said she didn’t need it, and Sree doesn’t have pockets (or hands) so you’re holding onto it for both of them.

All and all, it was a pretty good first adventure. And you smile to yourself as you let your mom and your friends fuss over you, the aches and pains slowly fading away as you drift off to sleep.

[End Part 2]

The vest looks like pic related, except made of leather instead. The glove is as described above.
Thanks for a great quest guys! Any last questions before I leave?

And here's the character sheet. now updated. You gained a new ability, and few job levels (plus a new wizard skill)

>>40486551
It's something that saver fencers wear under the armor, though I have a different purpose for it.

Size wise, it covers the top right quarter of your chest, and can be warn under or over your curiass and tunic comfortably.

It's something rather useful if you can figure it out, but more on that next thread.
>>
>>40486520
I don't know why but I want to assume that the compass is like Jack Sparrows and points to our hearts desire.
>>
>>40486593
