You are Louise du Petit-Thouars, a well off young lady in late 19th century Paris. In spite, or perhaps because of your life of privilege, you grew fascinated with theft. After two horribly failed attempts at stealing the Sultans treasure, you focused on stealing rare Korean books to be shipped back to Korea. To facilitate this, you seduced the director of the National Library, Victor Frézier, effectively making him your boyfriend. Last night you finally succeeded in your theft, stealing three of the 14 Korean books. This morning you learned that, due to the diplomatic importance of the books, Victor has resigned, with some suspecting presidential pressure to play a part in his resignation.

What will you do next?

Some rules and other affairs of note:
>Louise is an educated woman, and therefore assumed to be fluent in French, Spanish, Italian, English and German
>Louise is affluent, it is assumed that she can afford most services and purchases
>The campaign is semi-historical: the campaign will take place somewhere between 1880 and 1900, but some minor facts or persons may be changed
>Automobiles exist, but are not widely available. Louise does not possess one.

>When a roll is required, the best roll of the first three will be picked
>Rolling a 20 means automatic success, rolling a 1 means automatic failure. They do not cancel each other out
>The standard DC for the theft of a prominent treasure is 20, this means that only a natural 20 will result in a successful theft
>There are many factors that can increase or decrease the DC for a theft, a non-exclusive list will follow

Bonuses:
>Familiarity with or blueprints of the location (-2 DC)
>Gained the trust of a minor key figure such as a guard (-2 DC) or a major key figure such as the captain of the guard or the victim himself (-4 DC) (Non-cumulative)
>The theft is committed while the treasure to be stolen is being transported (-2 DC)
>The theft is committed while the treasure to be stolen is outside of Europe * (-2 DC)

Penalties:
>A major key figure knows Louise and has reason to suspect or dislike her (+4 DC)
>The treasure to be stolen has been stored in a vault, safe or other such secure location (+2 DC)
>The treasure cannot be carried away inconspicuously and no appropriate measures to transport the treasure to a safe place have been taken (+2 DC)

*Colonial and indigenous authorities are presumed to be less motivated and easier to bribe

While glossing through the newspaper, you decide to have a little fun. Slowly and carefully, you try to sneak your hand into Philippe's pocket. The idea is to surprise him by showing him his wallet. There's no bad intention, you're just testing how good you are at pickpocketing. Long story short: you're horrible. Before your hand even reaches his pocket, your butler instinctively grabs your wrist and pulls it with enough force to make you fall off your chair. "Madame! What has gotten into you!"

After a rather painful fall, you try to regain your footing. "It was nothing, I was just trying out some pickpocketing."

The butler shakes his head disapprovingly. "Madame, I thought you wanted to steal great treasures. Not reduce yourself to petty pickpocketing. Please try to stay focused."

You get up and leave. "I'm going to check up on Victor then. I'll be back later." Once you're outside, you hail a coach and direct him to Victors villa. On the way there, you can't help but wonder what has gotten into you. Your entire relationship was just an act, right? Then why are you checking up on him? Is this part of your façade too?

You distract yourself on the way there with your newspaper, scoping out what is worth stealing. The headline that instantly draws your attention is:

>Spanish artist returns to Spain later this week
>French-Dutch cooperation in Van Gogh exposition
>Golden Calf found in Egypt

>>40495562

You read your newspaper on the way to Victors house. The article that you note first and foremost is one describing a large, golden statue of a calf being recovered in Egypt. It starts out with a brief description of the diplomatic situation in Egypt, explaining that the country has only recently opened its borders to western archaeologists. The calf is described as being "as tall as three large men". Several smaller golden statues of Egyptian deities were found as well.

The team consisted of an equal number of French and British scientists, which has led to some conflict about how the discovery should be divided between the two parties involved. After much discussion, it has been decided that the large calf will be transported to the British Museum, while the smaller one will be brought to the Louvre. The findings are expected to arrive in Toulon exactly one week from now.

You find this very interesting and keep it in mind for later. You've just arrived at Victors house, so you're focusing on your visit first. Upon request, one of his maids guides you to her masters bedroom.

"I must warn you that master has been very distraught after this mornings events."

That doesn't sound too good. The maid guides you to Victors bedroom door, then excuses herself to finish her chores. You carefully enter. "Victor? I came as soon as I h-"

"Go away." You can see that Victor is curled up in bed, completely covered by his blankets. "I don't want you to see me like this."

Seeing Victor lying in his bed, covered up like some small child, makes you feel disgusted. And he doesn't want you to see him like this? What is he even doing, sobbing like a little girl? It's hard to believe that this is the guy you were so head over heels for just two days ago. You need to get out of there.

"Yeah... okay. Bye." You quickly leave and hail a coach to bring you home. You've gotten the books, maybe it's time to just forget all about Victor. When you get home, Philippe is surprised to see you come back early. "Back home so soon? Did something happen, Madame?"

"It's fine" you reply quickly. "Let's focus on more important matters. Priceless golden statues were found in Egypt and they're coming to Toulon next week. I'm..."

"I'm going to Toulon and you're coming with me. We'll get the statues before they're brought to the Louvre." You think back to your first ever attempt to steal something. You were trying to steal the Sultans treasure from a train and it almost cost you your life. "This time, we'll be better prepared."

Philippe nods. "Of course madame. This is also a good season to go to the south. Around this time it has a lot of visitors, so you won't look too out of place there."

"Good, good!" you note. "We can stay there for a while, perhaps visit the beach once or twice and, most importantly, get to know everything we need about the authorities there.

You depart by train that same day. That evening you arrive in Toulon. The port city is quite a bit smaller than Paris, but still of a respectable size. Despite the fact that the sun is already setting, the streets are still bustling with life. In the distance, you can see some ships of the French navy in port. You don't have much time to enjoy the view though, as Philippe readily reminds you of. "Come madame, I know an inn nearby. If we hurry, we'll make it before it's dark."

Not much later you've found a somewhat fancy inn, where you get a room with a view on the city's port for yourself and your butler. Once you've settled in and changed to clothes more suitable for the warm weather of the south, you.

You tell Philippe to wait for you here as you go out and see what's what in the city. "Very well, Madame. Be careful and try to be back in time."

It's already dark out. You don't know anything about this city's security yet, but what you do know is that the Egyptians treasures will be heavily guarded. After your theft of three of the Korean books, it's almost a certainity that the government has become more suspicious. You may need some help. A city like this must have a sizeable underbelly where you can find enough help, right? Surely nothing can go wrong, right?

You wander around the streets for a while until you stumble upon an empty square, abandoned by all save for a bunch of shady youths. They seem to be playing a game with various balls until one of them notices you.

You're getting pretty nervous and have no idea where to start. These boys, though young, look pretty though so you don't want to mess with them. Just casually bringing up grand theft of priceless artpieces isn't exactly something you can do either. You try to hit it off casually.

"Hello there boys. Mind if I join you in your little game?". You feel pretty embarrassed. How could you just ask that question so casually? Do you have a death wish?

The boys look at you like you're insane. One of them speaks up. "I'm giving you five seconds before I kick your face in."

You stand tall without giving in to their intimidation. You can't give in to petty bullying if you want to become a master thief. Instead you try to make them an offer they can't refuse. "Tell you what, I'm going to give you some money and you're not going to do that. I'll even give you some more if you introduce me to your boss. What do you think?"

All eight boys get up from their game and surround you. "That's a pretty fancy dress. How much do you think it'll sell for?". Another boy replies. "A handful of francs, enough to be worth selling." A third boy grins widely. "How much do you think SHE'll sell for?" The other boys laugh, but one of them actually has a serious response. "I know a guy, some trader for Algeria, he's looking for a French wife. He's going to make us rich men."

You're afraid. You're surrounded by 8 boys, possibly armed, and if you don't get out of here you'll be sold off and made part of someones harem. That's not the future you had planned for yourself. You brandish your parasol like a cane and try to hide all signs of insecurity. "That's no way to treat a lady!"

The boys close in, some with small knives in their hands. You bash one of them in the face with the grip of your parasol, knocking him back with a bleeding nose. You then swing your parasol like a bat and hit a second boy in the face, knocking him on his back. You quickly sidestep a slash and stab another boy in the gut with the tip of your parasol, making him collapse as he gasps for air. Finally you beat another boy over the head with your parasol. Even though your assailants are quite a bit younger than you are, they still outnumber and outarm you. Yet you seem to be resisting fairly well.

"This bitch is crazy, man!" shouts one of the boys before he runs away. His friends follow suit, save for the one you poked in the stomach earlier. He's still on the ground, gasping for air.

The boy grabs your wrists and tries to escape your grip, but fails. "Y-Yes! Owww!"

You twist his ear even harder. "And where are your manners? You haven't even introduced yourself and already you talk about shipping me off to Algeria? Where are your manners?!"

The boy is still struggling, even though it's obvious that he can't escape. "Owowow! I'm sorry, I'm sorry! I won't do it again! Please stop, you're tearing off my ear! Owww!"

"You'd better not!" You stop tormenting his ear and let him lead the way. He takes you to a shady bar a few blocks away. You lose him among all the suspicious looking patrons, but before long he returns with someone in tow: a tall and muscular man with a peg leg and an officers saber hanging from his belt. You decide to get down to business. "How much do you know about port security around here?".

The dangerous looking man in front of you grunts. "I've been with the Navy for over 30 year, colonial marines. I know more than enough about this port. What of it?"

You look around for a moment. The bar is full of various shady types, you don't trust any of them for one bit. This isn't a great environment to discuss sensitive affairs. "I want to make money, a lot of money. I need your help for that. Why don't we find somewhere a bit more quiet and have a civil discussion?"

The veteran laughs. "A civil discussion?" He beckons for you and the child who brought you here to follow you outside. "This isn't one of your knitting clubs, lady. Here on the streets we don't do civil discussions. You tell me what you need and either I help you or I tell you to fuck off."

You find yourselves in a dark alley, far away from prying eyes. You must admit that you don't trust the situation, but given the circumstances you don't have much of a choice. "In a few days some gold Egyptian statues will arrive here. I want them. Help me and we can split the profits."

"That's pretty risky, lady. What happened? Did you read about gentleman thieves in your girly novels? The real deal is nothing like that. But if you're serious... I guess I can help." He strokes his chin. "Yeah, yeah. This can work out. Maybe we can get somewhere with this."
