Well, the caravan isn't moving.
Though you suppose dead horses do that.

Not move you mean. Not stop caravans. A caravan could easily continue on sans horse. There's extra horses. Otherwise, what would they do if something happened to the horse? Like mysterious horse death.

Which is not, in fact, an actual medical condition for horses, outside of the fact that horse currently in question died mysteriously.
This is starting to get kind of circular.

You shake your head a few times, brushing things like mystery horse diseases and so on to the back of your mind. They aren't important. You aren't a veterinarian. You take care of your friends, but-

You're doing it again.

And your friends aren't animals, anyway.

You head towards the cluster of people standing over the deceased equine.

You wander closer to the argument, ignoring heated voices and frustrated drivers.
There's a horse to investigate.

Judging from where it is, from its legs and and the way it has fallen-
Well, it definitely pitched over. Instant death, maybe? There's no holes on the ground, nothing to trip over. No damage to ankles or hooves, it seems. You prod the horse a bit, pressing lightly against its side.

If it has been poisoned, it wasn't by an arachne, you can be sure of that. It isn't turning to mush at all.

You're dimly aware that people are staring, and no longer talking.

You nod towards them, grabbing the creature's legs.
"Pardon me, yes?"

And then you flip it to its other side.

This half has a great deal more information for you.

There's a slow oozing bit of blood- almost sickly sweet smelling.
That's... definitely unnatural. You aren't certain, but you feel confident in your estimate that horses don't taste sweet.
There's no arrow or dart or anything of the sort.

Magic?
Wouldn't you have felt something, then?
Your range for sensing things is... well, not so great. And you weren't paying attention.

You've got information, at least.

>>
>>40498655
It does, but then the person she abdicates to passes it right back like a monarchal game of Hot Potato.
>>
>>40498611
Trust me when i say if something is sick enough to drop dead, there are warning signs, big ones. sweet smelling blood also rules out infections and the like. heart attacks or strokes are very unlikely.
>>
>>40498611
Because if something can kill a horse, then that something might also pose a danger to the rest of the caravan.
Also, rumors about mysterious animal deaths might make it harder to find work with another caravan after we make it to the city.
>>
>>40498676

Abdicate in favour of Mom. the perfect plan. If she abdicates she knows people who could take the job
>>
>>40498687
And then Sheszuka gets it when Nin thinks for a moment.
Since she would always follow Lyra that makes Lyra the defacto leader forever of the royal household, despite not being queen.
>>
>>40498611
It appears to have been poisoned, which is worth investigating
>>
>>40498705
So if Lyra don't find any injuries is a virus or something. If is that is better if she don't touch it much. They need to burn it to not infect other horses.
>>
>>40498787

It's not a sickness, It's fucking poison or magic.
>>
>>40498742
Brilliant!
>>
>>40498713
That's right.
>>
>>40498787
We kind of lack the medical expertise to say it was a virus. at most we would find out from one of the handlers that the horse was sick. but if that were true the horse would probably have been put down already.
>>
>>40498787
>>40498708
Subject expired without prior symptoms, probability of infection low.
External bleeding and unnatural odour of blood hint at poison/venom, possibly magic.
Likely motive: delay caravan, sow dissent among leadership, preparation for ambush
>>
You grab a rag from behind you, using your shield to drip water over the blood-smeared fur-
Beneath is a small puncture wound.

Blood is still slowly spilling forth- gravity taking the place of a beating heart to move it. The smell is stronger there.

You stand up, frowning hard, skittering around the body to the opposite side- If the horse died walking, then it came from... the bushes?
No, too low. The road is raised up as well, to try and keep water from washing it away.

Up a tree, then?

You head into the wooded roadside, a few confused people trailing behind as you begin to examine trees for something. You're not sure yet.

The forest, for its own part, is far too quiet.
No birds or bugs or anything.
But whether that is due to your own presence, or something else-

That's what investigations are for, yes.

"Uh- Lyra?"

You glance over your shoulder to the crowd hanging by the edge of the woods, all shifting uncomfortably.
"Yes?"

Kenzington is the one speaking, and the only one standing at ease- the rest look to be merchants, the adventurers staying closer to the caravan in a bout of role reversal.
They do take their job very seriously.

"To start- What are ya doing?"
You gesture to the trees.
"Looking for what killed the horse, yes?"
>>
>>40499182
The older man glowers for a moment, scanning the woods.
"You think it was killed, then? Not sick?"
"Sick horses do not have holes in their necks, yes. And they do not smell sweet. I would suggest that noone tries to eat the horse."
"Horses are a bit tough in the first place."

You shrug, and he continues.
"Anyway- Back up to the road, please."

You follow him- and the rest- curiously, skittering up the incline to the flat stone of the road, glancing warily at the woods you leave behind.
"You do not want me to find who did it?"
"If someone went and took out the first horse, it's an ambush. What I'm wonderin' now is why they're takin' so long ta jump out."
You look helplessly at him, and he snorts a choked bit of laughter.

"I'm not asking ya for a bandit's motive. But if we've got time, then we need to move."

The caravan rapidly turns into the sort of thing you see when someone kicks an anthill-
A whole lot of people moving, working together, preparing.

Wood slats get pulled up inside the wagons proper, an extra bit of armour against arrows and the like. Wheels are checked, weapons readied, another horse is hitched to the wagon.

But with all the preparation, there's not much for you to do- Large as you are, you can't very well offer your services to the wagons, and you tend to unnerve horses, though it depends on their temperament.
Something about being a super-predator, you suppose.

So you do the next best thing you can, and offer to trail through the woods.
An ambush for the ambushers, as it were.

"-Ya really think you can?"
"I am very quiet, yes."
"When you're not having shouting matches, I suppose."
"She started it."

He waves off your complaint, scratching the side of his beard as he considers.
"I'm not really feeling sending a kid into the woods alone against bandits, arachne or not."
"Then send Triss with me, yes?"
"Triss? She's, uh- You know her, kid. She's not really the forest-type elf."
"She's a crossbow type elf. If she can sit quietly on my skull, then she's fine."

He shrugs, sighs, and turns, sending someone down the train of wagons to drag her up here.

You check your armour, your weapons- Everything is in order, aside from the new set of scrapes and scratches on the plate. It took a bit to pound it back into a shape that didn't completely prevent the wearer from breathing.
Godsdamned gryphons.
>>
>>40500877

Only one was correct.

It was apple juice.
>>
>>40500930

When the caravan master returns, you trade your current riders for one more conscious and armed with a ranged weapon.
And then you head into the woods.

___________________________________________________________________________

You range ahead of the caravan, sweeping through the brush with ease-
The lack of conversation is a bit stifling, but then, stealth is usually impaired when people start to chat.

And of course- hunting people through the woods is a great deal more tense than following a trail and expecting something edible at the end.

It's barely five minutes ahead of where you were stopped that you find your horse-murderers.

Roughly constructed tents and the like, a few hastily killed fires- the whole place seems abandoned.
Or it would, if you weren't a magic half-spider person.

Assuming their motivation is to ransack the caravan, why would they alert us to their presence and give up the element of surprise just to take out one horse?
>>
>>40501659
>and give up the element of surprise
They don't. First of all, before Lyra came along the caravan didn't even realise the horses death was caused by something external, second, thats exactly why they didn't attack immediatly.
They just stalle the caravan to prepare the ambush.

If their motivation ISN'T to ransack the caravan, why the fuck would they have killed our horse?

Welp, he pissed the gigant spider. The five finger fillet is safer.
>>
>>40501971
>Someone went through a lot of trouble
Not really? They just hit it in the side with something small and poisoned, thats not " a lot of trouble", a lot of trouble would have been using something that you can't literally smell as poison.
>>
>>40502372
well, it also didnt leave a dart, so, either its some kind of special ammo that doesnt leave the carrying device behind, or they retrieved it somehow before anyone saw them, both which are a lot of trouble. And I dont think any normal person would even be able to smell a difference in a dead horse the way Lyra can.
>>
>>40502441
All indications point to the dart still being in the wound, dude. It's just not poking out and was overlooked.
>>
>>40502441
>it also didnt leave a dart
Very likely driven into the horse when it fell, or got crushed, we didn't look for it.
>>
>>40502322
And they're usually awful at it. This guy sniped a horse and got away unseen despite the driver and all the guards.

>>40502372
Somehow no one found the dart. We're assuming it's a blowgun, but we didn't find a dart either. There's a reason we had to roll 90+ 3 times in a row to figure out that the horse was murdered.
>>
>>40502490
>There's a reason we had to roll 90+ 3 times in a row to figure out that the horse was murdered.
We only had 2 rolls for the horse murder investigation, and nothing says we "needed" 90+, we just had 90+, we have no idea what the DC was.
>>
>>40502490
>And they're usually awful at it. This guy sniped a horse and got away unseen despite the driver and all the guards.
Which points to a professional, or at least someone very good at it, which indicates experience, which indicates they robbed caravans before.
Unless you think some skilled assassin goes around the forest killing horses, because reasons.
>>
>>40502483
Well, that just seems like bad investigating then.
>>
>>40502536
Note to self. Put horses in swamp.
>>
>>40502441

It's poison it's possible the dart fell out a ways back and the horse walked some distance before falling over dead.
>>
>>40502575
>Well, that just seems like bad investigating then.
Not really, we found out all we needed to know for our purposes.
And heyy, give Lyra break, she just started on her career as Spidertective.
>>
>>40502536
If you assume they're experienced, then why would they give up the element of surprise to kill one horse? If they're going to ambush then it should be decisive. They (almost) got lucky with the way the horse fell and everyone arguing instead of examining the horse. The horse killing going undetected wasn't experience or intentional, getting away unseen was.
>>
I gotta check out guys.
Try not to murder too many people. Stick to scooby-doo tier spooking if possible.
>>
>>40502662
>then why would they give up the element of surprise to kill one horse?
Because the element of surprise isn't lost at all, no one knew the horse died unnnaturally before Lyra investigated, how often does this need to be said?
Even if they did find out, it might simply not matter depending on what their actual strategy is.
Hell, the "element of surprise" isn't even actually lost because the caravan can't stay on high alert the entire time so it doesn't really matter if they think someone is there.
>>
>>40502697
>Try not to murder too many people.
They're bandits, they deserve murdering as much as the asshole kobolds if they are dumb enough to not immediatly surrender.
>>
>>40502662
Are you honestly trying to argue the guys who delayed a caravan by shooting the lead horse and have a disguised camp in the forest are somehow not bandits?
>>
>>40502730
>Because the element of surprise isn't lost at all, no one knew the horse died unnaturally before Lyra investigated, how often does this need to be said?
You didn't read the rest of my post. As far as we could establish, that was all luck.
>>
>>40502730
Maybe their modus operandi is killing the horses sthealty one by one following the caravan. The people thinks that is a sickness or something and when they are really delayed and vulnerable they attack.
>>
>>40502835
>As far as we could establish, that was all luck.
I see no reason to assume thats luck, when its far more likel to have been on purpose.
Clearly they didn't shoot the horse by accident, so they had a reason, clearly they didn't want us to find out immediatly we were being attacked, or they would have used a arrow.
So everything points to them having had a plan figuring in us not finding the methode of murder.
>>
>>40502789
>a disguised camp
What? No. They put out the fires because they heard that a giant spider person was coming to fuck them up for killing a horse.
>>
>>40502919
>the whole place seems abandoned.
>Or it would, if you weren't a magic half-spider person.
They are trying to make it look abandoned, which is disguising it.
>>
"Good afternoon, yes. Would you like to surrender?"

There's a string of utter silence, a sudden halt in the heartbeats and breathing you can hear before they start back up again, faster and faster. A rustle of leaves from above you, the scuff of a boot against the dirt from a tree beyond-

"Don't move!"
"Hello."
"Said don't move!"

"Why?"

The elf behind you has braced herself on your skull, crossbow gently vibrating with the force of the string drawn taut.

"Y-you might not be 'fraid of poison, but I bet the elf is! I'll shoot her iffen ya move!"
"I'll shoot you first, bloody shitheel bastard-"
You shake your head.
"Surrender, yes."

"Wha- I just said-"
"Do you think poison is bad, or do you think being torn in half would be worse?"
You can hear people stiffen in their hiding spots.

There's whispering all around you.
"D'ya think she'd eat-" "-the hell'd they find a spider-" "-bloody spider forest, moron-"

The voice above you coughs a few times, the branch groaning under their weight.
"Maybe- Uh, maybe we could talk?"
"Maybe you could surrender."
"We're tryin' ta talk here, right? So maybe we could just-"

You move all at once, a rush of chitin and armour and spear and fangs- You're up the tree before the man can even fire, one arm holding Triss in her seat as you hang sideways from the trunk, hissing.

Your opponent literally faints out of the tree, thumping to the ground below.

You peer down at him.

The crossbow went one way, so he doesn't seem to have landed on it.
That's good, at least.

One by one, the rest of his cohorts file out of the trees, glancing nervously between you and their fallen companion.

You move through the crowd of criminals, though most flinch away from you.
Triss collects weapons- and you replace blades and bows with a set of webbed mittens, each linked to the next.

You even pick up the leader- Or de-facto leader, anyway. Noone seems to be in charge, but he was doing all the threatening?
It doesn't matter, anyway.

You stick his hands together the same as everyone else, throwing his arms over his companion's head.
They can carry him, the idiots.

And with that, you set them walking to the road.

Triss leads, you follow up behind.
Noone tries to run.

It's a long, slow walk back to the caravan.

And you find yourself slightly miffed that noone evens seems terribly impressed that you've arrested a small pile of bandits.

Are we actually going to take them with us?
>>

What else are we going to do with them, eat them?

They can make up the labor the horse they killed would do, they can haul wagons till we get to the city.

I'm sure no one would miss a bandit or two if we feel like snacking on the trip.

If they have a bounty on their heads that means not just money but fame too. Lyra needs to be a famous spider in all the world. That would be cool.

We can get more use out of them than that.

The bandits that cater to our whims may have the pleasure of being spared. Those that displease us will be devoured by the arachne and her menagerie of monsters!

Its easy, we make them drag the waggons, those that collapse from exhaustion get eaten.

They're probably going to get sentenced to death anyways. Can't eat them because no fun allowed, but we could quietly murder them while no one's looking.

No one seemed to impressed, so they're probably no one special.

Some bandits is just the start. The fame will come.

Jin on Interrogation duty.

And here I was, hoping that the horse would turn out to have been an incubator or mule or something, inadvertently sold to Kenzington at some point before they reached Oakring. And the 'bandits' were hired to / tasked with tracking down the horse and getting its contents back. With the safety of the horse not being an issue at this stage, they killed it hoping the caravan would leave the body behind, then they could retrieve the goods. And would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for that meddling spider!

But actual bandits work too.
