Your Name is Adria, daughter of Sylea, and you are a human adventurer out to make your mark on the world.

===

Right now, you’re standing over the bodies of two orcs. Both are covered in numerous cuts, all cauterized shut by the lightning. Around you lay the bodies of several goblins, dead by your design if not by your hand. Two of the bodies swing idly from Neru’s spider web, as the Arachnae herself continues wrapping up her kills.

Wait, no, this wasn’t how it happened…

You glance down at the bodies at your feet, and are confronted instead with two snarling pig men, spears at the ready. Your sword is in your hand as you go through the motions of the battle yet again, until both orcs are once again rightfully slain (though you manage to pull off the spell properly this time around).

You’re dreaming, you realized, somewhat belatedly, or perhaps just dozing. Over the eighty and change years of your last life you had a few lucid dreams, enough to realize what’s happening right now at least.

The corpses are still there. But then again, you never really had time to come to terms with what happened yesterday, in the valley. During the fight, you were high of adrenaline and loopy from pain. When you got home your mother made you drink what must have been a half gallon of different medicine, so you weren’t really thinking straight then either.

Looks like now you’re stuck dealing with this in your dreams.

These two orcs… their bodies are probably already torn apart by scavengers, but here they’re fresh as if you just ended them with your blade.

They were, or ‘are’ rather, your first kills for both of your lives...

You daughter, Charlotte, was a psychology major in college, and vaguely you remember her telling you that humans are hardwired to avoid killing other humans. You feel like, in this world anyway, that probably applies to all sapient creatures. You know you’d be a wreck if you killed a Harpy anyways.

That said, you notice a distinct lack of disgust or horror here. You don’t feel like you’re going to throw up or anything, and it’s almost easy to remember that earlier jubilation and thrill of combat.

You frown, as you watch yourself kill the orcs again and again in your dreams. You aren’t disgusted… but you certainly feel something. Felt something? Not important.

You were never a big fan of “self-reflection” in your last life, but you decide that it’s important to figure out how you’re reaction to this, how you’re responding to your first kill.

You feel…

>Thrilled and ecstatic as you watch your victory over and over again. The rush of combat, the feel of the blood pounding in your head, you’ve never felt anything like it. You can’t wait to get back out there, and test your skill against others again and again as you hone yourself into a real warrior.

>Saddened by the loss of life, but resolute that it was necessary. You will not hesitate if needs must you kill sentient creatures like the orcs again, but your will not relish it. Indeed, perhaps you might seek better ways to avoid combat in the future, though you will never stop training due to the necessity of it.’

>Ambivalent. The orcs were raiders and they were trying to kill you. You have no remorse for ending their lives in turn. You enjoyed the chance to test yourself, but your real pride comes from how well you handled the situation and in the ways you improved. The death of the orcs does not factor into this.

Welcome to RE: Human quest!
In RE: Human quest, you play as Adria, the young adventurer who’s setting out to make her mark on the world.

Voting period is 10-15 minutes in length. Write ins are accepted but I reserve the right to veto any that I deem unfeasible. Dice are 1d100 and best of three, roll high with modifiers as I give them. I will ask for other dice as needed.

During Combat scenes I cut the voting period to about 7 minutes to keep the pace up. So far that hasn’t been a problem.

You sigh as the scene before you dissolves into what dust that dreams are made of.

My, are you feeling eloquent tonight. Aren’t you, Adria?

Still, you don’t really need to watch a replay of your first battle so many times. Your dream memories keep getting it wrong and out of order, plus, you mom already raked you over the coals on all the stuff you did wrong in real life. No need to be self-critical at the moment.

As for the deaths of the orcs? Well… they did not move you a great deal in one way or the other. They were, in a word, your enemies. And you just can’t bring yourself to feel bad about killing them.

On the other hand, your performance had far, far, too many mistakes for you to feel proud about it. Sure you acquitted yourself decently for a first time adventurer, but on an objective scale? You probably ranked about a three. Though, you’ll be back out there again soon, working on improving yourself even more.

Seems like your perfectionism didn’t die with your first body.

The random scenes of your dream blur some as you start to wake up. There’s a warm weight on your chest, probably Sree, little rascal enjoys sneaking into your bed. Saying ‘Fishy has pillows’, feh. You feel a smirk forming on your lips.

You yawn once as your eyes flutter open for real, squinting against the rays of light streaming in through the window. Really? You slept in that long? You’ve been so proud of your record of actually getting up on time, not falling into that whole ‘teenagers sleep till noon’ phase the second time around. And then you go on one adventure and blow your whole damn record.

Well time to get up, what to do…

Writing!
>>
>>40502978
You look down as you try and slide out from under your Harpy friend, and you blink.

Is Sree… blue?

You rub your eyes with a free hand before looking again. Yep, the backs of her wings are covered with dark blue feathers. If not for the light bouncing off of them you’d say they were black. You lift up her wing, causing her to giggle, the underside is white now, with the occasional blue feather popping out in a sort of pattern.

You grin down at her, lucky little girl. Now that you’re awake you remember when auntie Neru gave you the talk.

You know, the one about how you shouldn’t attack Monsters just because they look different after a good night’s sleep? Though, you’re 99% certain your last life didn’t have that.

Anyway, time to wake up your friend and share the good news. “Sree!” You ruffle her hair lightly, causing her to squirm. “Sree wake up!” She grumbles once more before turning over and glaring weakly up at you.

“Whaa?”

You chuckle. “Check your wings little bird.” You say, running your fingers along the feathers of her wings.

“Ah!” She squirms more “Tickles! Stooooop~!”

You do, just in time for her to glance down and see what the big deal is. She gapes.

“Feathers?!”

“Yep!” You nod sagely. “Looks like you finally evolved! Good work Sree!” You ruffle her hair again as she examines her new (and dare you say longer?) wings.

After a few more moments, the surprise seems to wear off, and a different emotion comes over Sree. She glances up at you, her wide golden eyes somehow looking sad. “Wasn’t fast enough…” She murmurs.

“Hmm?”

“Wasn’t fast enough!” She shakes her head once. “Saw you in trouble, but was too far away, you got hurt, was sad. Promised that next time, next time…” She pushes herself into your torso and wraps her wings around you.

>>40503606
Oh. You frown, biting your lower lip. There’s another point against your performance yesterday, you made your friends worried about you.

You sigh as you return the hug, gently rubbing Sree’s back right between her wings.

“Hey,” You say. Resting your forehead against hers. “I’m okay. It barely hurt at all, and I’m completely, one hundred percent, a okay now. See? You don’t have to worry anymore. I won’t get hurt anymore. Promise.”

She sniffles for a bit longer before she gets her emotions back under control, before looking up at you as she blinks tears out of her eyes. You give her a small smile. Funny, you didn’t think birds could cry.

Just another reminder how human the ‘Monsters’ of this world really are. After the orcs, it’s good to see that your friends remain unchanged, especially in your eyes.

“Promise?” You nod and Sree settles back against you. You hear a tearing sound as her talons shred your sheets as she gets comfortable… Maybe you need to take up that tailor job after all… you muse with a sigh.

Still you can’t stay in bed all day. Once Sree calms down some what’s you plan?

Vest it is.
Before you just go pay someone else to tell you what it is, do you want to try and uncover the secret yourself?

The vest is made of worn leather, and looks to cover the top right quarter of your chest. There many small marks near the top and along the sleeve, like someone jabbed it with a knife.

The glove wraps around your wrist almost up to your forearm, the self same marks appear on the glove, though many are smaller. There's a single leather strip hanging from the wrist, severed at the end like it used to connect to something.

Guesses? (it will level your perception skill if you're right or close) or just go to the Leather worker?

You can also ask your mom and Sree about it.

Five minute vote.

After You coax Sree out of bed you try on the vest, maybe it's some type of enchanted armor? You admit to having almost no experience with these sorts of things.

You pick of your sword and go through a few forms, but it's just... well, not awkward, it doesn't impede your movement at all, but it doesn't do anything for it either. Maybe you need to be fighting something? But no that doesn't feel right. You take it off again, looking at the small scrap of leather one more time. Those marks... originally you thought they were dagger marks or something, but their so thin, and look more like tears than punctures...

Suddenly>>40504010
Inspiration strikes you! "Sree?" You call, "Sree can I see your foot for a second?"

She looks at you oddly, then shrugs fluttering up to a nearby chair and holding out her talons for you to see. You look them over, comparing them to the marks on the vest. Yep, this is a perfect match. With a grin, you put the vest on. sliding your arm through the short leather sleeve. "Hey Sree." You pat the vest. "Hop on!"

She definitely thinks your crazy now, but does as you ask. "What is it?" You ask.

You grin. "It's a falconer's vest." You say. "Specifically, a falconer's vest made so that it can be used with both normal birds and Harpies!" That's pretty cool. Not to mention useful. "Plus, now you won't tear up all of my clothes anymore!" And if you're not mistaken, there is actually an enchantment on the vest. Even though Sree is pretty light, she's heavy enough to be uncomfortable after a more than twenty mintues of carrying. With the vest, she's light as a feather. You tell her as much.

"Ohhh good yes!" Sree chirps. "Now I can ride around on fishy all the time."

You chuckle. "Guess you can!"

>Special Job Unlocked "Falconer!"

You blink once, glancing around the room. "Did you say something." Sree shakes her head. Whatever.

Well that's one mystery solved, and useful loot to boot. Odd voices in your head aside...

A quick note on jobs.
You have several unlocked jobs that you are not currently leveling. To make the job active, which means that it levels when you do things related to it, you need both the equipment to facilitate what the job does(i.e. beakers for an alchemist), and to decide to take said job.

Now, while there aren't any inherent disadvantages to taking additional jobs, more jobs mean splitting your attention more ways if you want to level them all, which means the quest lines will grow more diffuse. Also, jobs provide no benefits until level 10

Current unlocked jobs are:
Alchemist, Explorer, Archer, Cleric, Tailor, Tactician, Falconer

Jobs can be taken at any time you meet the requirements. So, while I don't want the thread constantly warring over taking a job or not, feel free to discuss the merits of your jobs at any time (they're at the bottom of the character sheet). If I see enough consensus I'll call a quick vote.

I suppose most of this depends on what we want for our MC. Do we intend to be always adventuring, orr taking time off to live a quiet life sometimes?

Explorer would keep us moving, obviously. We could work as a guard for traders. Maybe a courier, delivering messages far and wide? General adventuring might fit, too.

Archer seems to clash with our current setup of swordmage, and cleric may overlap with our mage stuff unnecessarily.

Alchemist and tailor require equipment or items that would be a hassle to cart around, so that'd probably keep us from adventuring too far. Maybe for supplies.

They're hardly ironclad in their playstyles, but if we want to play a certain way, we may as well take what we'll level up along the way.
>>
>>40504855
To soon to tel tbh
>>
>>40504855
Tailor may be good to get some levels in just so we can competently mend clothing. perhaps find i way to branch into basic leather working skill.
alchemy may have uses though magic may be just as good. so yeah, Falconer and maybe Explorer.
>>
>>40504922
If we're looking for small things out of like mending clothes, we may have to sacrifice time to level up those skills.

If we take anything for now, it may as well be stuff we know we'll end up doing anyway because it'll make the quest fun. Tact/Falcon seems like a good combo since I imagine we'll want to fight.

Explorer will probably be another one we pick up, unless anon decides it wants to stick to the cities.

>>
Arent jobs and classes synonymous in this universe?
>>
So just to address some general points I saw.

You guys are right, jobs aren't iron clad. You can take a job and try it out (though that will require devoting time to it) if you don't like it, stop leveling it, and eventually it will fall of your active job list.

Explore does require that you move around a lot to level, or at least discover new things and locations.

Tailor and Alchemist do not require (per sei) that you stay in one place. You could take the jobs just for utilities sake, and repair your own clothing and craft potions from plants you find on the road.
However, you still have to level both jobs to 10 to get benefits. If you're dead set on econing it, those two jobs would be helpful.

Cleric will not have much overlap with wizard. Most combat oriented miracles come with Paladin, an offshoot of the Cleric job (you would know this from mom).

Tac/falconer do synergize excellently. And some of the highest level Tac skills are awesome (if I do say so myself).
For example Lvl 100 Tactician -> Miracle of Lepanto, once per week skill; if there is a way to win a battle, you can see it. Gain complete knowledge of enemy forces, terrain, and factors you can employ to your advantage.

I really want to write a Tactician character... so many cool toys...

Anyway...

'Swordmage' is a job, though it's not called that.. You're rather close to unlocking it actually (you don't know this in character). Torn between calling it Spellsword or Redmage.

Quick note, leveling tactician requires you doing more stuff like the Orc camp raid. Scouting, plans, and group tactics.

Anyway, looks like you have plenty of good discussion going on. Feel free to vote. I will provide any clarification that is needed.

I think Explorer might benefit from the compass, even if marginally. May as well turn it on in the meantime.

As for cleric, I imagine that'd involve working for a specific god. I'd rather hold off on that until we learn more. Maybe Mum can answer some questions.

Taking the Falconer and Tactician Jobs only. As you don't have any teacher, Falconer will start at level 1 and Tactician at level 2 (for your excellent plan with the raiders). Jobs below level 10 rise very quickly.

One final note about experience. As jobs increase in level, you can still gain experience by doing 'low level' things (like leading bandit camps into increasingly elaborate ambushes, and using your harpy to track dear and find ruins). But if you continually graduate to more difficult and complicated tasks, you can keep job leveling going at a decent pace.

Next story post is almost done. I'll update the character sheet with your new jobs later on.

>>40505732
I'm so Happy!
For the record though, all jobs get that sort of instant win ability at level one hundred. I'm just a big fan of large scale tactics.

Think of this as an incentive to level up.
>>

The only downside I see to trying to become a master tactician. we may have to get involved in a war, or very large battles. I'm not against it but damn.

>>40505857
Non combat related classes have less 'powerful' skills. Lvl 100 tailor just halves your material costs, for example. Also, non of the lvl 100 skill are pure 'I win' buttons. The more powerful the skill, the longer the cooldown.

1 week actually feels too short for Miracle of Lepanto. It'll probably be extended to once a month or longer.

Since both the vest and glove are rather worn, you decide to take them to the Lerayn’s shop. She does some of the best leatherwork in town, especially for detail jobs like this. The best for leather armor would be Tomnas, maybe you’ll see about stopping by his store later. You could probably get some leather armor that fit better with the Falconer’s Jacket than your cuirass.

You tried them both on right before you left. The jacket fits well enough under your armor, but it’s a bit tight, and the breastplate and backplate cut down on the space Sree can hold onto.

Still better than her ripping your shirts though.

After you get dressed, Sree takes off into the air after a quick goodbye, eager to test out her newfound abilities. You’re feeling the need to try that new skill you worked out, forcing lighting into your sword. Hopefully it won’t be so… explosive next time, but you can worry about that later.

When you get to the leather worker’s shop it’s empty except for Lerayn, who’s leaning against the counter top. Lerayn is about ten years older than you, with light blond hair and green eyes. She prefers to wear a leather jerkin over a dress, unlike you who prefers a tunic and trousers (who knew you’d be the progressive one in your new life!), but to each their own.

Lerayn glances up as you enter, before rolling her eyes once and pushing herself off the counter. “Can I help you?” She asks, pleasantly enough. You hold back a sigh.

Like you said, Lerayn is the best in the city for this kind of work, and she’s a shrewd enough business woman to not let her prejudices (obvious though they may be) affect her business. She doesn’t turn you away, and she doesn’t over charge you. You suppose you can accept that.

(cont.)

>>40505914
Aww. Can we keep having fun coming up with OP abilities for classes that shouldn't have them, though? Like, if explorers could find their way to any destination without fail, could we use it to find a way to the moon?
>>
>>40505991
“I have falconer’s vest and glove that could use some looking after.” You say. Placing both items on the counter, “Think you can do some repair work?”

“Hmmmm…” Lerayn takes a look at both pieces, no doubt using her Appraiser job to pick out all the details. She spends a bit running her fingers over the talon marks, and rolls the leather strip between her fingers. After a few minutes she looks up.

“Only think I can do for the vest is replace the strap here. The rest of it is enchanted, and further repairs would require me to take it all apart, ruining it.” She informs you bruskly. “The glove… I can replace most of the damaged parts and keep the underlayer intact. Adding a new hood will be child’s play.”

You nod as she sizes you up, deciding how much she can take you for. You just smirk, you’ve played this game with her before that was the 84 I rolled and after a moment she just sighs and puts the glove back on the counter top.

“It’ll cost you two gold for me to repair it all, plus some leather conditioner to keep it from cracking…” She pauses. “Or, since I know you already have a Harpy friend, you can sell me the glove. And I’ll repair the strap, and give you the bottle of conditioner for… three silver.”

Huh, falconer’s gloves must be hard to make. You ask her about it.

“Hard enough.” She says. “Now, glove or no glove?”

Go ahead and come up with all the abilities you want.

Here's how the job system works.

Every ten levels you get an active or passive ability (or a previous one levels up), these are useful but not game changing.
Every 25 level you get a major active or passive. These scale upwards in strength, the level 50 ability is better than the level 25.

So yeah, feel free to throw around ideas to your hearts content. If I see some good ones I'll even cherry pike them.

You cross your arms, staring at the glove and the vest both. You do already have a harpy, right now the glove is yours, and you have more than enough money to get it repaired. If you sell it to her, well then, you’d have to buy it back or get another one if you ever wanted to train a second bird…

After another few moments of deliberation you shake your head, and drop two gold coins on the table. “I’ll keep the glove. Though I would like you to repair it.”

Lerayn just takes the two pieces off the counter and over to her workbench. You can see she’s disappointed about the glove. At your request she replaces the strap on the vest first and gives it to you. You put it back on under your cuirass and head out, pulling the compass out of your pocket as you go.

You catch your reflection in a nearby fountain. Now, you never really thought yourself as vain, but you do think you look pretty damn good with the vest and armor. You grin and begin to follow the compass.

As you walk, the needle begins shifting directions more rapidly, leading you to believe that it’s pointing to something inside the city after all. You get more than a few odd looks as you walk, but that’s nothing new. Indeed you’re ignoring them all until a loud voice calls out:

“That’s a pretty interesting compass you got there, Fish Face.”

Oh joy! It’s David.

You look up at him and roll your eyes. “So inventive David! I certainly haven’t ever heard that one before. Hope you didn’t hurt your head thinking of it.” You move to walk past him, but the compass needle tracks as you do.

(cont.)
>>
>>40506862
You glance up and see David smirk as you walk around him in a circle. The compass continues pointing directly at him.

Oh joy. It’s David.

You sigh. Honestly, he wouldn’t even be so bad if he didn’t share a name with your grandson, who, unlike the young man in front of you, wasn’t a complete and total tool.

“This compass is pointing right at you.” You say, deciding to cut to the chase. “Tell me why.”

His smirk just grows wider. “Why don’t you just give me the compass?” He counters. “Not like a stupid Halfling like you could ever figure out how it works.”

This song and dance is really getting old. “Tell me why it’s pointing at you, and maybe, maybe, I’ll consider not rearranging your face with my fist.”

He pales slightly at that, hand moving towards his sword (David was one of the two bullies picking on that fox girl after all), before catching himself. The smirk morphs into a cruel sneer as he reaches into his belt pouch instead and pulls out a letter. “Found this in the dungeon raid, secret room, practically cleared the whole place by myself.” He brags, prompting another eye roll. “It mentioned a compass but it looked like some damn goblins took it. Seems like they gave it to you, not that it makes much of a difference.”

You growl, before reigning yourself in. “So why don’t you let me read the letter.”

“Trade you.” He says. Insufferable little-

You take a deep breath, calming yourself, as you slide the compass back into your pouch for the moment. You do want that note, but what to do about it?

While I'm writing, you may want to consider... tactics!!

Basically, due to your Tactician job, before any fight you can discuss what your goals are and how you intend to go about them. Choices will reflect be more reflective of these, rather than just Counter!/Magic!/Block!

Some things you can focus on

>Disarming him

How do you want to go about it?
>Use the lightning sword, but primarily sword play
>lead him, him think he has the advantage.

These are just suggestions, you can ignore the strat and go in without one. Or try and change your tactics at any time.

Sree isn't here right now. You could call her, but the duel is one on one, and even though you're a falconer, she counts as a separate person. Also, it would reveal your ruse before the start of the duel.

At best, he would get a second person to help. At worst he'd renegotiate terms. That said, she would prove a great help.

>>
If we go for the lightening sword trick, I'm thinking we hit him as hard as we can immediately afterward, defense be damned. He might not be flatfooted for long, but one or two good hits with a sword can lay most anyone flat, and a shocked person isn't quick to react.

This. After the duel starts the terms are set, he can complain about you using magic all he likes, but he can't change the rules.

It is highly visible though. You won't earn many points among the spectators (the biased ones anyway) for 'cheating'.

“Duel me for it.”

He blinks. “Huh?” Smooth move Dave.

“Duel me for it, winner takes both the Compass and the note! We’ll get a wizard from the local college to officiate.” He frowns, and for a second he looks like he’s going to refuse. “Unless, you know, you’re too scared to fight a filthy ‘half breed’?” You ask with a charming smile.

His face grows red. “Of course not!” He crosses his arms angrily. There’s that bluster you know and love. “What Terms?”

“To the yield or… three strikes?... using our abilities and jobs to win. No outside aid. Winner takes both the compass and the note.” The three strikes enchantment ties into asking a high level wizard to officiate the duel. He’ll place an enchantment on both of your swords that causes them to light up when they hit flesh, but also be unable to cut it. You’re pretty sure it will dull the shocks of your lightning on a direct his as well, but you aren’t sure about conducting it.

David pauses for a moment, thinking over the terms you laid out. He eyes you as well, as if he suspects some sort of trickery in the wording. But apparently it takes too much mental effort to puzzle it out, as he just nods wordlessly and starts in the direction of the college.

The two of your find a wizard, named Arnstein to initiate your duel, and you both pay him one gold piece for the enchantment (along with removing it at the end) along with officiating the duel proper.

When you tell Arnstein the terms of the duel his eyes light up slightly (he’s seen you around the college before), and you know he’s caught the trick, but he doesn’t say anything and instead just enchants you blades and demarcates the boundaries of the dueling ring.

It’s a good twenty feet square, in one of the practice yards off the main thoroughfare, and already people are gathering to watch.
>>
>>40507920
You examine you blade, now enchanted. You feel like it won’t mess with your lightning magic, so that’s good. On the first blow, your blade will glow green, second yellow, and third red. That, or forcing David to yield of course, is your victory.

You cast your eyes over the dueling ring. It’s a dirt ring, but you catch sight of a decently sized rock that’s half hidden by the dust. If you can bait him into it you might be able to trip him up. Since your plan is to shock him and then lead him on, you put the rock behind you, doing your best to remember its location.

Hopefully you won’t trip.

He takes up his spot opposite from you, and you both get ready. Right now, you’re about ten feet apart, the rock is five feet behind you and slightly to your right.

With one last look at both of you, Arnstein calls for the match to begin.

You twirl you blade around your wrist once, before placing your palm upon your blade and holding it horizontally at shoulder height. David snorts, “What, are you going to offer me your sword? Finally learned you place peasant?”

You smirk. “I walk hand in hand with lightning.” You feel some of your mana drain and lightning sparks from your fingers to dance across you blade. You spin it across your body, mostly to hide as you clench your other hand at your side (the spell almost imploded on you… and wouldn’t that have been embarrassing?), but also because it looks cool.

David gapes, and then immediately turns to Arnstein. “She’s cheating! Disqualify her!”

Arnstein shrugs. “Girly said the terms were, victory using the jobs you had.” He says. “Not my problem she didn’t tell you she was a wizard.

David growls before turning back to you. “Dirty coward!” He shouts, face twisted into an ugly mask of rage. “Hiding behind magic like that!”

You chuckle. “You know, when you whine like this it makes me thing back to how we met.” You say. “Remind me, were you the one that went down after one hit or ran away with your tail between you legs?”

With a wordless cry, he charges. You grin as you

You let him come, taking a few prancing steps back as he rushes you. He swings recklessly, but his anger makes far too sloppy for it to be a threat. If this was a real fight, you could, perhaps, have ended him right here.

Instead, your own blade comes up, slapping his aside. You force him to lock blades for a moment, and the lightning does what lighting is wont.

Deprived of a way down into your own guard, it grounds itself in David instead. He gasps and staggers back, keeping you from following with a warding blow as he tries to regain his footing. Looks like the enchantment doesn’t do much to conducted electricity after all. How’s that for past life knowledge.

You grin as he glares at you “You’re about as weak as I remember.” He’s practically growling at you now, good. The angrier he is, the worse he fights, on top of that, you can see his fingers twitching slightly on the hilt of his sword. You might not even need to trip him. Of course, it’s still a viable option.

David now takes -2 to all rolls, 1 from wounds, 1 from berserk status

Your sword lashes out, and he almost balks before catching it on his shield. Sadly, wood is not very conductive. You take a few steps to the right, pretending to dodge his far too short counterblow.

There is now just enough space between you and the rock for him to stand. You sword is at the ready, and you smirk hasn’t failed this whole time.

David raises his sword over his head. “I follow the path of Chivalry!” He shouts. Your eyes widen as he charges, his footsteps more steady, the grip on his blade more sure. He steps over the rock, not even noticing it.

You lean back, letting his sword ghost past your face. You can see the surprise on his as he misses.

“Please,” You sword snaps out, catching him in the check with a harsh jab and a jolt of electricity. “Since when did chivalry mean ‘beating up on girls’?”

He stumbles, and the rock is placed perfectly. It catches his heel as he tries to regain his balance, sending him sprawling into the dirt. “Oof!” The wind is knocked from his chest as he hits the ground, and the sword goes flying off landing a few feet away.

Before he can so much as think about getting up, you’re there, sword poised an inch away from this throat, the barely contained lightning eager to leap, to sear, to burst out. And David freezes as he sees the cold, calculative expression on your face. “I don’t suppose it matter though.” You say, and you can see it takes a second for him to process that you are still speaking. “It’s not like you got very far.”

Now, you don’t know what was going through his head at that moment. But you’d like to think, in your more sadistic moments, that he was retracing every step of the battle in his head, that he was realizing how you played him, how each step was choreographed to your tune. And most importantly, how everything-

Every single thing.

Went exactly. according to. Plan.

Perhaps you see the light of realization dawning in his eyes. But then again, that might just be the lightning.

With two more quick jabs, your sword is red. Arnstein calls the duel with grin. He always did like seeing the intelligent young pupils defeat the brawn with brains. You hear muttering in the crowd, some (mostly the Monsters and Halflings like you) are openly cheering for your victory. Most of the humans are a bit more… put out.

Heh, as if you cared what they thought. Kneeling down next to David, as he’s in no position to move right now, you reach into his belt pouch and retrieve the letter. “I’ll be taking this!”

Then you rise, and Sree, who showed up just as the fight was about to begin, lands happily on your shoulder.

As you disappear into the crowd you flip the letter open, and begin to read.

‘To the lucky, or at the very least adventurous, finder of my compass…’
