Ask Languid Anything: ask.fm/HellbornQM

Your name is Sierra Beckhoff, and you are hellborn – part mortal, part demon. Ever since you ran into a family of demon hunters, a lot of weird (but cool) stuff has gone down. You’ve battled rogue generals, joined the a baron’s conclave of demonic advisors, and dueled landmasters. You maybe even met a real live dragon – though you’re not a hundred percent on that one. Most surprisingly though, you just recently graduated high school.

You’ve just tied up all the loose ends keeping you in town. Now, all that’s left now is to pile in a car and ride into the sunset on your pan-American road trip, obnoxiously sending a postcard back home from every backwater rest stop on the way. Everybody’s coming – Ro, Vikrama, and even Xanissil. And now that Moriah’s agreed for sure she’s coming, it’s going to be a blast, wherever you wind up going.

--

You scoff at Moriah’s declaration of intent. “Duh you’re coming with us,” you say, sitting up a little on Vikrama’s tiger carpet so you can get a better look at her. “You had no choice.”

You can feel a tinge of amusement in her aura, though she gives no physical indication of humor. “I see,” she says.

“So now that we have five and a half people,” you say, “maybe we should rent an RV or a van or something? Something huge.” Preferably so you could even take your motorcycle along, if you wanted to go on solo voyages from the group.

“Renting a plus-sized vehicle wasn’t an option, darling,” says Vikrama, laughing to herself. “I’m not spending days cooped up with a dog in a minivan.”

Moriah considers this. “Don’t you need a special permit to drive an RV?” she asks.
>>
>>40514515

“Maybe for the bigger ones,” Rowan answers. “But we’ll get an SUV. A really big SUV.”

While Vikrama and Ro discuss the details of their SUV fantasies, you examine Moriah a bit more carefully. You wonder what kind of trouble she’s been getting into, given how much power she’s expended. You know the kinds of things she could do with that power, and with that in mind, if she got into a fight or a wizard’s duel or something, it probably means that some poor shmuck out there is very dead.

Knowing Moriah, you also know that she doesn’t want to talk about it now. But that doesn’t mean you have to ignore it.

While Vik and Ro are talking, you get Moriah’s attention and speak to her in Heltic. “You look a little rough around the edges,” you say. “You alright?”

Moriah’s expression remains fixed, though you sense some alarm at your question. “Just tired,” she answers, again in Heltic. “I’m okay.”

“Well. I’m here if you want to talk or whatever,” you say.

“Really. I’m fine,” she says.

You doubt you’ll get more out of her tonight, so you just nod, and return your attention to the car trip plans. It seems you are definitely set to rent an SUV. That’s probably big enough to rig your bike up to the back, so you have no complaints.

“So, mountains, coast, Seattle,” Rowan says, running again through the itinerary. “I always wanted to drive the Yucatan Highway – we could keep going north all the way up to Anchorage.”
>>
>>40514522

“Sierra’s looking for landwells,” says Vikrama, “and who knows how many wells Roger has up there. I say we turn east and head down Yellowstone.”

“I thought you said national parks are landmaster deathtraps,” you say, giving her a critical look.

“I was just throwing out ideas. I don’t know anything, remember?” says Vik. “Maybe there are so many landwells there that nobody’s claimed all of them. And meeting landmasters isn’t exactly bad, you said it yourself that Roger and Hugo were pretty chill. Maybe you’ll meet someone who can teach you wisdom.”

“Or,” says Moriah, “we could mind our own business, and stay north.” She points at the map, drawing out an invisible route along the Canadian border. “We could go across Canada and go to Winnipeg.”

You could imagine you doing either of those, you guess. Even though doing Yellowstone might be a little more risky, it’s still a way cool place to go. It’s not like you have to gobble up every landwell you see.

Though, in spite of the mean jokes about Canada all the time, it might be nice to take the scenic route and just enjoy the journey. Probably nobody up there to run into, except if you’re counting the one crazy trapper guy Sattler ran into in that territory. But running into one dude in all of Canada isn’t a likely event.

Either place is a good jump off point to wherever you’re going next afterwards.

But, you know, Rowan's not the only one interested in going up to Alaska. You doubt Roger's territory goes all up the Pacific coast, and Alaska the huge state seems like a likely candidate for a billion landwells.

>Take the northern route, up into the Alaskan wilderness. It's all about the journey.

You want this roadtrip to be fun and adventurous, not frought with peril, so you decide maybe not Yellowstone. Because you want to come back from this thing with wings. So, while going cool places is important, you have to balance that with landwells, because landwells have coolness factors as well.

As for going to Alaska, that’s kind of a dead end. That’d be the whole trip, up and down the Pacific Coast. Unless you wanted to drive across Canadian tundra, which you don’t. But just driving a little bit across Canada, or at least the populated parts, is more okay. You don’t know if there’s anything cool to do in Winnipeg, but according to the map, it’s in a good geographic position to launch into your next leg of the journey.

You explain your reasoning to the others.

“I guess we could always have another road trip sometime and do the Alaska thing,” says Rowan.

“And Winnipeg is as interesting as anywhere else,” Moriah observes. “It’s not a loss to go there.”

Vikrama looks at the map. “So long as we’re in Canada, we could just stay there,” she says. “We could go on to Toronto. Or even Quebec.”

“I think there’s some symbolism to be had in making it to the East Coast,” Rowan agrees.

“Superior National Forest is right here,” says Moriah, pointing to the edge of the Great Lakes. “Whether we stay north or go south toward Minneapolis, we could stop by and scout for wells.”

“If we do Minneapolis, we can go to Chicago,” says Rowan.

“What’s even in Chicago besides mobsters?” you ask.
>>
>>40515090

“I don’t know, but it’s Chicago, it’s got to have something,” she replies. “Dad has a couple friends there. Maybe we could spend the night or something.”

Vikrama disagrees. “If we stay north and do Quebec, we can go around the lakes and south down to New York.”

“That’s hundreds of miles difference,” Moriah points out. “It’d be faster to go through Toronoto if you wanted to go to New York. And there’s Niagara Falls if we go through Toronto.”

“New York isn’t the end all be all,” Rowan tells Vikrama. “We could meet up at the East Coast in Washington or somewhere else, even, whether it’s Toronto or Chicago we wind up doing.”

Choices, choices.

>I don’t want to be in Canada any longer than necessary, and Rowan has a point. Chicago’s got to have something good going on for it.
>Seems like Toronto is more directly in line with the most interesting places to go. And waterfalls. I like waterfalls.
>Quebec’s kind of out there, but as long as we’re being all cultural and whatever, might as well hit up the capitol. I mean. Quebec’s the capitol, right?

“Seems like Toronto is more directly in line with the most interesting places to go,” you say. “I like waterfalls. And screw Quebec, Canadians are bad enough without adding the French to the mix.”

There is general agreement on this point, from everybody except Ro, Moriah, and Vik.

Anyway, after this point, there doesn’t seem to be much consensus on what to do. You’ll figure out where you’re going when you get there. New York or Washington are probably on the hit list, but no matter how excited you are for incredible journies now, that might change after a week plus on the road.

You tie off your planning sessions for the night, satisfied in what you’ve got so far, and the meeting devolves into successive rounds of chubby bunnies.

---

Today is the final day. The SUV is secured, and through the morning, you and Rowan have secured it with all vital cargo and provisions necessary for life, like chocolate chip cookies and packs of soft drinks, as well as blankets and things like that.

And lots of guns.

But you probably won’t need them. Though Cassandra seemed adamant that you be prepared, just in case you encounter something unpleasant while scrummaging around for landwells.

You and Rowan take a breather from your efforts, sitting on a couple storage boxes in the garage. The air outside the open garage door is hot from the summer sun, but inside the garage, the concrete seems to suck the heat from the air, making a cool den for cool cats. Cool cats like you, for example.
>>
>>40515596

Rowan cracks open a coke and takes a drink, then lets out a sound of utter refreshment. “This is going to be awesome,” she declares.

“No duh,” you say. “The question is how awesome. Like. If we’re talking degrees of awesomeness.”

“I’d guess one of the higher ones,” she says. “I take it higher’s better on the degrees of awesomeness register?”

“Until I come up with a more purposefully BS awesomeness register, then yeah,” you say.

You both sit and admire the full packed trunk of your rented SUV for a moment. The car is huge – huge enough to seat nine. So, five and a half won’t be too bad. If Reeber goes without glamors, he can sit in the back. And with the tinted windows, glamors will be optional. It’s a sweet deal.

“You got any sweet plans for your last day on Earth?” Rowan asks.

You snort. “We’re driving to a national park, not the moon. Or death,” you say.

“I guess you never know until we get there,” she replies.

You snicker. But what are you doing today? You thought packing would take longer, but Rowan was a lot more organized than you were, and had everything figured out before you even started thinking about it.

>Let’s just relax. Today’s just another day. Tomorrow’s when the sweet plans begin.

“I just figured we’d hang out, you know, whatever you wanted to do,” you say. “I mean. I kind of wanted to meet up with Wolf later, like, say goodbye and stuff, but we can just do whatever till then.”

Rowan thinks about this, and decides that’s fine. “All right. Whatever I want it is, then.”

“Although,” you add, “I kind of needed to get some advice from somebody. I got this offer from Lucifer – you know, the Mardusian emissary.”

“What kind of offer?” asks Ro.

“I don’t know, really. It was really nebulous. But it might involve some travelling.” You tell her what he told you, including the Verwelken stuff, and how that should probably remain confidential.

She puts on her serious face. “Don’t agree to anything.”

“I know, I haven’t,” you say.

Rowan takes a breath. “I don’t like, usually say this, but ask Ranthix about it and do what he says,” she advises. “He’s good at seeing through demon political crap.”

You laugh. “You’re actually telling me to take Ranthix’s advice?”
>>
>>40516265

“Like I said. Not my usual,” she says. “I know... I know maybe you’ll actually want to start doing the Imperiate thing someday. Mom and dad... they want the best for you, you know? But I don’t know how they really feel about it. But Ranthix really believes in you in that way, so he’s not going to try to shelter you, if it’s really the best move for whatever your grand scheme is.”

“Wow. You’ve actually... you know, actually thought this through,” you say. “I didn’t even think anybody took the Imperiate thing seriously, really. I mean. Thanks.”

Rowan rolls her eyes. “Of course I take it seriously. She was your mom,” she says. “You can’t just forget where you came from. It’d be wrong.”

Is that why you’re doing this whole thing? Because it’s family or something like that? You’ve never really thought about it before. It sounds plausible, you guess. You do care, of course, but up till now, you’ve just kind of gone with the flow.

But now, you don’t really know what to do with how much Rowan actually cares about what you do with your life, and it makes you feel vaguely uneasy for some reason.

“You know, before I met you guys, I don’t think anybody cared about what I did or who I was or whatever,” you say, trying to put the feeling into words. “I mean. I think you... like. Like you actually care more than I do? I mean it kind of freaks me out.”

You can feel Ro’s shock at your words. “Why on earth would it freak you out?” she asks.

“I don’t know. It’s just... it’s different,” you say. “Nobody else cared before. It was just me.”

Ro smiles slightly and delivers a soft punch to your shoulder. “Well, now it’s us.”

You wave her away. You can’t handle anymore talking about this kind of crap. “So uh. What’s it you want to do, then?” you ask, avoiding the subject. “Complain about our boyfriends or what? Because mine’s pretty good, so, not really complaining there,” you say.

Rowan laughs. “How is your Young Wolf doing, anyway?”

Rooftop makeouts. “He has a snake tongue,” you tell her, keeping your voice low.

“What?”

“Snake tongue!” you almost shout. “Geeze. I mean. Yeah. Hellions got forked tongues.”

“You’re on fire,” says Rowan.

“Hard for the guys to resist,” you agree, pulling at your shirt.

“No really,” she says, pointing out the minute flames that have escaped your attention and that flicker up your shoulders.

You force the lid on your self-ignition. The garage isn't the place for that, especially given the door's up and everything. “Uh. So how’s what’s-his-face?”

Rowan snorts. “Eh. I dumped him,” she says.

You stop for a moment. “Wow. You sound so distraught.”

She shrugs.

“Do I still have to pretend he wasn’t totally lame?” you ask.

“Hey. He was nice,” says Ro.

“And Texan,” you add. “But... boring?”

“Well. I thought a guy being handsome and chivalrous was enough, but...” she trails off, squinting at the loaded SUV. “I kind of do go around punching evil in the face and cleaving monsters asunder with a blessed holy blade of truth.”

“Yeah. Being hot and nice is important,” you say, “but you shouldn’t like, you know, totally outclass them in the cool department.”

“Really?” she says. “By that logic you shouldn’t go out with Wolfgang. He’s way cooler than you are.”

“Hey!”

“Just kidding. You’re way more stylish than him,” she says.

You’re unsure if she’s just saying that to placate you. But since it is what you wanted to hear, you let it slide. “Plus Will was kind of short. Let’s be honest.”

“Sierra, everybody’s short for me,” she says.

“Pfft. I’m sure there’s some jacked angel guy out there who’s like, six foot six and who’d love to enforce magic justice with you, if you know what I mean,” you say, elbowing her in the ribs. “You’ve just got to set your sights... a little... higher.” You can barely get the words out with a straight face.

Ro almost retches at your clever play on words. “You’re the worst. Seriously, just stop.”

You snicker to yourself. “So, what’s the plan, Lady Ro?” you ask. “We got all day.”

“Actually,” says Rowan, “I was thinking about it a little, and you know, with me going down to Stanford, it’d be cool if we had something to do together so it wasn’t just me over there, you over here.”

“Yeah?” you ask. “Like what? Tennis?” You hate tennis.
>>
>>40518244

“Well, I was thinking I play guitar, you’re getting better at guitar. And you have a pretty good voice and I like singing,” she says.

“What? I have a good voice?” you ask incredulously.

“The walls aren’t soundproof and your room’s next to mine,” says Rowan. “Your whole secret jam sessions aren’t really that secret. And everybody sings in the shower, so you don’t need to be embarrassed or anything.”

You make a note to stop making noise whenever you do anything, ever. “Uh. Yeah... what’s this have anything to do with anything?”

“Come on,” says Rowan. “I want to start a band. You up for it?”

“But you’re like, way better than I am,” you say.

“Maybe, but bass parts are a little easier than the guitar parts for a lot of songs,” she replies. “And I’ll help you. It’s what practice is for.”

Ranthix is the type of guy who needs a woman to tell him they're dating now, instead of asking. His interactions with Sierra's mother clearly show he's the kind of guy who respects declarations and orders, not questions and suggestions.

Hahaha, no. She's at her happiest when she doesn't have to be in control for a little while. She's the classic example of a high-power, high-stress, ambitious woman, who just really wants someone else to take control when it comes to things like romance and sex.

Having to be a dom even while dating would be awful for Sierra, because she barely likes having social power in her normal life, no matter how much keeps getting handed to her.

You knew this day would come. Well, actually you didn’t. But in retrospect, you should have known you would one day actually be in a band. You just need to make it happen, and for that, you require one thing.

“We’ll need a drummer,” you tell Ro.

“Yes,” she says. “And we need somebody who can play a keyboard. Or a third guitarist, maybe.”

“Hmm,” you say thoughtfully. “Now, when you say a band, is our band going to have its own songs and stuff? Because... I kind of have a couple ideas, maybe,” you say.

“Really?” she asks.

“Uh. Not like. That much,” you say. Sometimes you do write some poetry or song lyrics or whatever. But you never thought about acting on them.

“Well whatever you have, we’ll have to look at it,” she says. “I think I have a couple songs in mind already, but I think it’s cool if we can have a group thing going on.”

You realize that if you’re going to form a band, you have to do all the stuff people get to do when they form bands. “Holy crap. We have to make up a logo and a pretentious band name, and we don’t even have all day,” you say, excitement coursing through your veins. You stand up and motion Ro toward the door. “Let’s get cracking!”

“Aw yeah,” Ro says, crushing her soda can flat and popping up to show you the way. “Let me show you what I have so far. I’ve got everything in my room,” she says, busting into the hall and flying up the stairs. You follow after, ideas surging into your mind nonstop.

Angels and Demons is too cliché, even if true. Although if Xathix and Xanissil were down (and talented) you could be Angel and Demons, which might be so dumb that it becomes awesome again. You like the sound of Grimgrin, but you’re not sure if it would match your musical stylings. You don’t think Rowan’s going to be metal enough to warrant a name like that.

Rowan has some more out there ideas for band names, like Skybridge or Pacific Solitaire and stuff like that. You guess in the end names don’t really matter. Now, you’ve heard a few Rowan-written songs before, but turns out she has a whole bunch more she didn’t share. Some of them aren’t really that good, to be honest, but you run into a couple that really have something going for them. The real question is just what kind of sound you’ll be going for.

You kind of run out of time before you figure that part out.

You fingers hurt from playing so much guitar, but it was necessary to work out some of the sounds for your own ideas. You don’t know how to read or write music, so you kind of had to get Rowan to transcribe some of the tunes you’ve had floating around in your head forever.

But soon you’ll be one of those people who can say, ‘Oh yeah, I’m totally in a band. No big deal or whatever.’ Oh yeah.

Outside, the light fades. Rowan looks up from her laptop, where she has all of her crazy music dreams stored in digital format. “Where does the time go?” she asks.

“Same place I’m going, maybe,” you say, rubbing your thumbs against your sore fingers. “Keep thinking of names. Oh – and anybody you know who can play drums.”

“I know people who can play drums, just not anybody I like,” says Rowan, frowning.

“We’ll find somebody,” you promise her, edging out of the door.

“Whatever. Just go make out with your boyfriend already,” she says, smiling as she guides her ultra-long hair over a shoulder. How does she live with that stuff attached to her head?

“Hey, we do other stuff sometimes too, you know,” you say, angry at the accusation. “It’s not always just maximum overdrive all the time. Like. We hang out and go on dates and whatever.”
>>
>>40519499
Shit, I hope I live for a while longer at least.

“Sure, whatever you say,” she says. “Don’t be out too late. If we’re going to leave at seven, that means waking up earlier than seven, and that means going to sleep not at five AM when you get home after 'hanging out' with Wolfgang.”

“That only happened once,” you say. “Shut up. I’m leaving.”

And you leave. But not before telling Harvey that you’ll have landwell magic for him, but only on the condition that he gets Sydney out on a date before you get back.

“In order to get something you already said you’d give me, I have to do something I’m already trying to do?” he asks.

“Quit chickening out and just do it,” you say. “You’re not getting any hotter, and she’s not getting any elfier. It’s all downhill from here, bub.”

He is silent for a a solid ten seconds. “I’ll bring the girl if you bring the well,” he says.

You pound fists, and then you really leave.

Motorcycles are pretty cool. In fact, they’re even cooler when you’re the one riding one. It’s like you’re in the secret motorcycle riders only club.

You drive into the city, comfortable going at a leisurely pace. There’s really no rush. It’s all about moments and crap.

Moments don’t last forever though. You have things to do. And while you will definitely Wolfgang it up, you can’t just ignore Rowan’s advice. You drive down to the piers, find a place to leave your bike, and find a nice spot on a grassy slope by some weirdo modern bow and arrow sculpture so you can watch the ocean. With scenic view in sight, you call Ranthix for a meeting.

Ten minutes later, you feel his furiousness approaching from somewhere behind you. You don’t get how he keeps up the intensity all day every day, forever. You’d burn out.

Ranthix drops to the ground and scowls at the other people sitting nearby, and then at darkening sunset. “Disgusting,” he remarks, glaring at the shifting tides of orange, blue, and magenta. He’s wearing a pair of flip flops, cargo shorts, and the Hawaiian shirt you gave him, though the he’s left the shirt carelessly unbuttoned.

>You like your sunsets a little redder, I take it?

“You like your sunsets a little redder, I take it?” you ask.

“The mortal firmaments lack the fullness of expression of the thousand hells,” says Ranthix, disapprovingly. “Green refuses to grace these skies. The lapse in flavor leaves their skies bland.”

“Hell has green sunsets?” you ask, surprised.

“As season wills. But a sunset should be every color that is, and some that are not,” Ranthix lectures you. “I have decided that is the lack of ash in the air. Your air lacks bodily substance, and suffers for it.”

“Never thought Halth would be more colorful than here,” you say.

“Everything is more alive when it knows it can be smothered at any instant by a harrowing avalanche of seething ash,” Ranthix says, scowling. “Life here takes itself for granted, and languishes in slovenliness.”

You narrow your eyes at the sky. “I’ll never look at a sunset the same way again,” you say. You smile at the thought. “So what have you been up to, Rax? Feels like I only see you when we’re beating each other up.”

“As it well should be,” Ranthix says. “Your weakness is beginning to leave you, yet clings to its holds. Now, with this pretense of your California academy’s Terran indoctrination out of the way, you can truly begin your rise as a new star of mourning for all those who revile your name.”

You scoff. “Nobody even knows my name,” you say.

“There are those that yet do know, and you will justify their terror at the dawning of your reign,” Ranthix replies.

Badass. “Hell yeah,” you say.

Ranthix turns his displeasure from the sunset to you. “While it pleases me immensely to hear your petty assent, you know better than to waste my time with it,” he says. “For what purpose did you call me here?”

“Well, might as well go right into it,” you say. You tell him all about Lucifer’s deal, and as you do, Ranthix grows increasingly irate.

“HEATHEN RAT,” Ranthix shouts, drawing attention from pretty much everybody within earshot.
>>
>>40521195

You smack him on the shoulder. “Dude. Chill,” you say.

Ranthix takes a breather, a couple sparks flickering out of his mouth as he clamps down on his rage. The smoky feeling inundates you, almost contagious. You feel yourself getting mad at whatever it is Ranthix is so mad at. If you could punch it in the face, you totally would.

When he speaks again, he has recovered his volume control. “Lucifer is far more than an emissary. He is a spy for his master. That much is no question. And to extend such a brazen offer to you, one of no ostensible value – Lucifer must suspect your true identity,” Ranthix growls. “But for Sulkrasph to so deal with you through an emissary is an insult to the last standing Imperiate, given his suspicions.”

“I’m not so sure,” you say. “I mean. Maybe it’s an insult in Inferia, but Sulkraph’s got his own customs and whatever in Mardusia. Maybe he’s trying to be polite by not putting me in the spotlight. I mean, I’m pretty sure it’s not the safest thing if everybody found out who I was right now.” It sounds reasonable to you, anyway. Seems like the way Lucifer was going about it.

“You do not understand,” Ranthix says, almost fuming. “Sulkrasph was one of the Arch Conclave, conclave to the Imperiate. Corithis did not entertain a culture of hypocrisy amongst her cabal – his conduct toward you through his representative is borderline treason.”

>I don’t know man. Lucifer’s just Verwelken splitblood. That crap’s secret to everybody. I can get the secrecy.
>Well, if he insulted me so bad, what am I supposed to do about it?

You furrow your brow. “Wait. So this guy was in my mom’s conclave?” you ask.

“Yes, it is good to see you remember things told you just seconds ago,” Ranthix says, annoyed.

“No. I mean. This guy happen to wear a funky iron mask thing?”

Ranthix narrows his eyes at you. “You remember him.”

You strain your memory. “I... think so,” you say. “I must’ve only seen him once or twice, but the mask thing weirded me out as a kid.” You pause. “My mom trusted this guy, right? Like, they knew each other and stuff?”

Rax scowls. “Corithis kept her enemies and allies on a short leash,” he says. “I cannot say which Sulkrasph was. Often they were one and the same. But the conspiracy of the Imperiate’s murder must have involved members of her conclave, and Sulkrasph could be among their number. For that reason alone he cannot be given trust where your designs are concerned.”

“Well okay. You’re the thousand year old Thul’tal, you know about this kind of thing,” you say.

Ranthix glares at you. “I have not yet seen my hundredth summer, spawnling,” he says.

“Whatever,” you say. “You’re older than I am.”

“That is right,” he agrees.

You get back to the topic at hand. “If Lucifer - and by extension Sulkrasph - insulted me so bad, what am I supposed to do about it? Seek his blood or something?”

“A bold retort, but perhaps not feasible at this stage,” Ranthix says, scowling and rubbing his jaw. “Sulkrasph’s power here and abroad waxes strong. Let your displeasure be known – Lucifer should not have the gall to speak to you on such terms.”

“I don’t exactly have grounds to get mad,” you say. “Unless, you know, I actually up front tell them I’m the Imperiate.”

Ranthix throws his hands up. “They already know! Purposeless dodging is the vice of court-rats like Waldric, and fails categorically outside of Beleroth. Acknowledge the strengths of an opponent and he will acknowledge yours,” he tells you.

“But Waldric needs Sulkrasph’s support,” you say.

“The Imperiate doesn’t care what Waldric needs, but he gets it anyway if that’s what she wills,” Rathix shoots back at you. He pushes off the ground and stands, glaring down at you with his arms folded over his chest. Ranthix is huge, even with his glamors up. “You’ve spent long learning the weakness of those wallowing in mediocrity," he tells you, his voice shaking with rage. "Now is the time to learn the way of power – the way of will that triumphs.”

He makes it sound like the simplest thing in the world. And yet, you have no idea what the hell he’s talking about.

You stand up as well and brush yourself off. “It is time to get serious,” you say to yourself. You definitely don’t want to wind up like Waldric. You know, whatever he’s like.

“The ascension is at hand,” Ranthix says.

You laugh. “You know, that’s what this trip I'm going on is for. Like. I’ll claim land, get a power base going on, and maybe meet a couple allies,” you say. “Maybe get some rumors going on about the Imperiate being back. Maybe it’ll lead to something, sooner or later.”

“I am well aware of this journey you have planned,” says Ranthix. “You have only told me of it a thousand times.”

“Well, thousand and one right here,” you say.

Ranthix gives you a toothsome grin. “It is a fitting trial,” he says. “Perhaps you will find your inner American spirit animal on your vision quest.”

“I think that’s just for Native Americans,” you say.

“Do you not constantly lord your American heritage over all else?” asks Ranthix.

“That’s more of like patriotism or whatever,” you say.

“There is no impossibility for the Imperiate,” he tells you. “Do not let reason impede your senses.”

“Uh. I’ll get right on that,” you say. “You know, I’ll do what you said about Lucifer. I’ll tell him to shut up. He’s fresh out of the privilege of talking to me. I mean, I guess he is, if it is a privilege.” No, you must be more firm. “Or... yeah. Hell no, I don’t have to take his disrespect! When I get back from this thing, I’m going to chew him out so bad.”

“Good,” says Ranthix, nodding in approval. “Very good.”
>>
>>40523749

“If Sulkrasph wants to make me offers or whatever, he can figure that out through you or Waldric, and talk to me about it to my face, right where I’m in charge,” you add. “And... we’ll figure out if he betrayed mom. And if he did...” you’re not sure of what you’d do if you found out he did “...he’ll bleed for it.” Yeah. That sounds good.

“Spoken like a true Imperiate,” Ranthix says, sagely. “Soon, Sierra. Soon, the world will kneel.”

You like the sound of that. You smile broadly.
