Your name is Thomas Cairn, and you have no clue what you jumped into. Your dad was an infamous superhero known as The Red Rider, and he showed up dead in an alley about three months ago. When you were checking out a storage unit you inherited from him, everything changed. You gained his powers, a brain able to calculate faster than light, and an uncanny affinity for machinery.

Using your powers, you were easily able to get into the world's top engineering college, Central Cosmopolis Institute. But just as you were ready to leave everything behind in your hometown, Comet City, and move on, one of your dad's "co-workers", John Salvos, stopped by. He had an envelope from your dad, inside was the key to a safehouse in Cosmopolis, and a letter from The Red Rider.

The letter told you many things, including the existence of the murderer, Menace, a supervillain with unknown abilities. It also led you to your dad's lab/safehouse, where you passed copies of his notes on Menace to Mr. Salvos. Mr. Salvos was revealed to be the Superhero Swordsman when he showed up in a fight against the Supervillain Boombox. He provided you with an address, and you have just discovered that it was leading you to his base.

This is unreal, you remember when you first set foot in your dad's lab, and it was only a bit more intriguing than this time. Littering the space are what seem to be all sorts of gadgets that you don't recognize at first, but then you realize that most of them are only spare parts. Thinking on why Swordsman would need them, you look over at the metal suit in the pod. It doesn't look to be powered, and it didn't make any noise at all when he was near you, so the only logical conclusion is that the suit is unpowered on its own. However, some more inspection around the room reveals a bunch of powered devices that are by no means silent. Maybe an external power supply? Whatever, you spent far too long this week researching other things, you have to remember to give yourself some time to cool down. Don't want to get any more insane.

Wait, yeah, that's right. There is an external power source, you can smell gasoline around here. Wait... seriously? He straps a generator to his back to use gadgets! That is THE dumbest thing you have ever seen, just shoddy really. On the other hand, this does mean that he has superhuman strength without any mechanical assistance. If you had to guess though, he isn't naturally this way, he obviously lacks the expertise to manufacture this suit, so the only logical assumptions are that he had help, or he stole the suit. Your mind wanders back to Dr. Genesis, a Supervillain from WW2 who tried to activate whatever causes Supers and win the war. Surprisingly, he wasn't a Nazi, but an American. Some say that he even succeeded in his efforts to make a Supersoldier, but he disappeared after the war, so who knows.

"Beautiful isn't it?" Gee, I wonder who it could be? No clue at all. And the sarcasm's back now, great.

"It's okay, really just a suit of armor, nothing special Mr. Salvos. I get the feeling that the armor isn't too important. But a generator, seriously?" There is a shocked silence for a time. You obviously surprised him, don't know why. Did he think you were clueless?

"I should have expected that you knew who I was, but how do you know what I am?" Mr. Salvos seems genuinely shocked by the idea that someone would suspect that he was a Supersoldier, really, it was rather simple.

"Next time, make sure to at least try to make it look like the armor is doing the work." Really? He really thought he was subtle?! To think that you thought that he made this suit.

"Well, I assume that you don't know everything already and have some questions, so ask away." He seriously is offering answers, it's been a while since you got those.

"How did you get your powers?" Seems pretty bog-standard as far as questions go, short, simple, to the point.

"Well, I'm not a Legacy like you. I got my powers through scientific alteration. You see, when I was a kid, I was always sick, Doctor said it was some sort of genetic disease. And you can't treat that with regular medicine, but my dad was rich and wanted his son to live. He dragged me all over the country looking for a cure. Dad found it in an old doctor, the answer was gene therapy. Every day for ten years, I would be stabbed with needles full of stuff that made me feel like I was even more sick. The doctor said that my immune system was optimal for the procedure, but every day I felt less and less sick. Finally, the last day of the treatment, the doctor knocked me out and sold me to the government. I don't even know which branch, but that's where I got the suit. I broke out and stole it."

Huh, so gene therapy is plausible, some doctor can do it, and it causes Supers. Wait, what's a Legacy? You can guess, but what connotation does that carry?

"Who was my dad really?" You have to know what he did, it's killing you.

"He was as close to being James as he was to being The Red Rider, he never changed who he was. The man was the same, mask or not. He loved Janice and you, talked about you all the time. He told me that he didn't want you to have to be like him, so somehow he locked your powers. It was ridiculous, I'd never known it was possible, but apparently Legacies can do that. If I had to guess, you broke them out. He knew that Menace was a threat to everyone, so he made a hard choice and suffered for it. He was a model Hero, that's why a good portion of the guests at the funeral were Supers."

DAMMIT, more talk about Legacies, what does it mean? Also, you should check the Guestbook for the funeral. You didn't know that bit.

"Who was at the funeral?" That was an unexpected answer, you have to know.

"If I gave you that one kid, every Super from here to Tokyo would have their cover blown in a week. So no, can't answer that." Darn, no dice. That makes too much sense.

You smile "Anyone I can trust?" Let's see if he catches that.

"Like I said kid, pretty much every Superhero on the globe owed him a favor, so anyone who is out to do good." He caught it!? Guess he's not as dense as you thought.

"What's a Legacy?" That is the important question, you don't like not knowing something, it feels unnatural.

"Oh, sorry, should have explained that. A legacy is a multi-generational family of Supers, like Captain Justice or Silver Bullet. Your family is pretty new, but I should catch you up on what we know about Super families. When a Super has a child, it normally has a slight variation in its gift, like Captain Justice gaining the ability to fly. It sometimes has to do with two Legacies intermarrying. Legacies are also normally more powerful."

"So how do I stack up to my dad?"

"I wouldn't know, but he always kept an encrypted hard drive with his weekly psych evals on it. Might try to start there, but from my view, you are making stuff that he only dreamed of. Those robots were damned impressive."

"Thanks, 50 pounds of force if you're wondering on the output on Boombox's speakers." He cringes at that. "But anyway, I get that the gas generator works and all, but it's loud, heavy, and offensive to my very soul. I can make something better in a day or two when I get back to the lab." You can't stand that stupid generator, it feels like a goddamn abomination.

"Thanks, Wrench made the toys, but he is notorious for taking shortcuts, so that will really help." He smiles at your apparent disgust for the wretched machine.

"Can I get Wrench's number? We have some things to discuss." As much as you despise his work so far, you haven't even met the guy. Maybe it was a rush job.

"Yeah, sure, but be warned. He's a little... eccentric. His powers are less about refined products like yours, more like slapping shit together into unholy abominations. But, he's always friendly... so that's a bonus." Great, another Madman Genius, seems to be going around. Still, occasionally you need someone to bounce ideas off of.

Mr. Salvos hands you his number on a piece of paper, and you decide not to put it on your phone just yet. You have researched phone numbers a lot more since leaving Comet City, and you know this is a burner phone. Should probably run it through a payphone instead, there are more of them than you would think in the inner city.

"Before I go, did you find anything on Menace?" You barely thought about Menace before, but now that you are feeling more confident, it would do to learn something.

"I don't think I did." God, fuck this guy and his sense of humor, whatever, time to go.

You decide to head to the lab and stop at a random payphone on the way, that way you can't be tracked. Besides, there's this nice Chinese place on the way to the lab, and you need something to eat while working on your project. Speaking of which, the final scan should be done soon. You choose a payphone close to Mr. Salvos' base, you figure Wrench already knows about it.

"Hello, who is this?" The voice on the other end seems a little scrambled, smart, voice recognition is a very powerful thing.

"I'm Thomas Cairn, you knew my father, and I would like to talk to you some time soon. When and where can we meet?" You know that this connection should be secure if Wrench is half as good as you think. But discussing this in public is probably not clever.

"Meet me at Salvos' place two days from now at 7 in the evening, bring a red rose and whisper that the cat has slipped the bag." Oh fucking shit, not more of this bull, guess birds of a feather flock together. Hey, you got that one right, that hasn't happened in a while.

"Okay, but only if you explain the abomination you created." Did he just hang up? Well whatever, fuck him. Calm down, you're getting upset.

You pick up some Mongolian beef and fried rice from Uncle Wong's and head for the lab. You have to check that scan. The door opens with a beep and you put down your food. The scan shows that this should function properly, so you turn on the tablet and bring up the command screen. No time like party time, well, that streak was good while it lasted. You input the start command and a prompt comes up.

"Call me Sir." You don't want anyone knowing who you are, that isn't very smart at all. You already took precautions, such as implanting your biological scans into the programming at a fundamental level so that nobody could tamper with it without destroying the program.

"Very well Sir, I am RON your own invention, you designed me to help you with anything you need done, my main objectives are not yet set. I would recommend setting them so as not to waste time." Those Hyper-Processors are functioning great, and you already gave RON the wireless access to all of the machines in the lab. Of course, you also made doubly sure that he could not betray you. You've seen too many movies about that.

You have been thinking about those designs for the Red Knight Suit for the week, but it would take you at least a month to do it personally, but this makes time a non-issue. RON doesn't have social obligations, so he can work on it. Unfortunately, RON won't be able to make improvements to designs on the fly, apparently that's a human thing. However, he is much better than you at multi-tasking without going insane.

What should RON do?

You sit down and start eating your dinner. First, you program RON to start on a Potential Generator for Mr. Salvos, you're gonna show up Wrench no matter what. Luckily, you have all but a few parts that you need to make it. The machines whir to life as you input the command, beginning to assemble the frame. Next, you decide to test out RON's business savvy, you give him access to $4000 and tell him to invest it and try to make money. Thinking on the subject of money, you tell RON to start patenting your inventions and shuffling them down the Patent Office, trying to make it as fast as possible. The estimate is roughly six months before you get results, a dramatic improvement from the suggested two years.

"Sir, the patent for the Micro-Actuators is almost to the end of the patent line, should I move to get it there faster?" RON is already on the case apparently, guess that you did a good job programming.

"Of course, so long as it's legal."

"That is why I suggested it, you didn't place a utility priority mark on it, that is why it took so long sir, even if it went fast due to the impressive nature of the machine." Wow, guess you missed something after all.

"When will it be done now RON?"

"By the end of the week sir." Well then, you might want to get started on marketing those, or partnering up with a tech company. Anyways, RON can continue what he's doing here, and you can go home.

You have been studying the Cairnsium core for a while, and you finally cracked what it was this week. Cairnsium is a synthetic element that was created when your Potential Generator Prototype. It is not fissionable, or even radioactive, and the reason for this is its atomic makeup. Cairnsium lies in the second island of stability on the Periodic Table. This is the point where the halflife of a material no longer increases with atomic number. From what you have gathered, Cairnsium was created by your prototype imploding and drawing in oxygen so densely that it fused them together. So the thing is, you created cold fusion, and the result was not what anyone expected. It stands to reason that you could replicate this process stably if you were to invest time into designing something to do so.

You check "The Boom Room", and the core is still there, unchanged, still at its normal output of 10,000 Megawatts. You could probably integrate this into the Generator for Mr. Salvos, but then you would have to rely on yourself replicating the process. Also, the gadgets Swordsman uses don't need anywhere near this much power. It would probably be a waste of resources, but when you can create more, this could solve the energy crisis.

Enough wild speculation on saving humanity for today, you should get going.

Well, the last date didn't go so well, but maybe you'll do better this time.

"Hey Jeana, it's Tom. Do you want to go play more charades?" She laughed, SHE LAUGHED, fuck, yelling.

"Yeah, maybe at a different venue, wasn't really into the whole flailing uncontrollably thing."

"Well then, cross dancing off the list." There it is, she laughed again, maybe you're getting better at this. Why are you getting better at this?

"What about we go to see ShakeDown at the park, they're doing a benefit concert and they're only taking donations."

"Never heard of them, but sounds cool, and if it's for a good cause..."

"Okay, I'll see you there, meet me out front at 9."

"See you then." That went really well, why did it go well, what's going to happen? Maybe things are turning up well for once.

You start your car and drive for your dorm to get changed, you stop in and nod at Harry, then you change into a t-shirt and jeans to go to the concert. You practically leap out the door and jump into the car. You make it to the park five minutes early, you were just too fast, and wait at the entrance for Jeana. She shows up on a red bike and locks it into a rack.

"You ready?" She looks gorgeous, even in a ratty t-shirt, but maybe you're biased.

"Yep!" You head in and drop a fiver in the donation box, something about saving the seagulls or whatever.

You and Jeana come out two hours later very satisfied, Jeana was right to suggest this, you had a blast.

"You wanna catch a ride with me?" Eh, worth a shot, what do you have to lose.

"Sure, just let me get my bike." Does she have a tone? You feel like you should be understanding something but you aren't. OH, what, why?

She puts the bike in the car and hops into the passenger side. She seems like she's in a hurry to get somewhere, oh wait, is she nervous? What the fuck, how?

Your brain is firing a mile a second, you don't even realize that you're driving until you are back at her place. You know that every dorm is actually co-ed, even if they are divided pretty much by gender, and there aren't any rules saying you CAN'T have guests. She takes you up to her room, and surprisingly, Monica's there, what a coincidence that those two are roommates. After a bit of negotiating, Monica decides to go to your dorm for the night with Harry. Oh boy, now he owes you.

She gets in her bed and gives you the look...

Hey Jim.

What Rob?

On the topic of Cairnsium, we should contact Swordsman and have him ask some of his super hero buddies about it. It's a moral dilemma, really.

It's an infinite supply of clean energy, I get that, but...it just screams "Supervillain Doomsday Device!" to me, so if it ever got stolen...bad things. A dilemma to present to the supers first, and possibly ask them to put priority protection on it if we do ever decide to unveil it.

Well that was unexpected, you were maybe expecting a kiss, but Jesus Christ, you weren't expecting that. Not that it was unwanted, just, a pleasant surprise. Well, she must be hungry and you're starving, Chinese just never seems to keep you full for long. Might as well get breakfast, so you slip out of bed, put on your clothes, and head down to the cafeteria. If there was a way that you could sing without looking like a total tool, you would. You decide on getting some eggs and bacon for each of you, and Harry's in line too.

"Hey Tom, gotta say, I owe ya one." He seems tired, as always, but he at least looks happy.

"How much is one Harry, like, if you had to put a price-tag on it?" You always joke with him about his dad's money, kind of how he jokes about you spending too much time on your car.

"Bro really, oh wait, sorry, just a bit out of it this morning."

"Harry, you're out of it every morning."

"Point taken."

You wave goodbye to Harry, then take the plates back to the room. Jeana is still sleeping, so you leave hers with a note saying "Breakfast- Tom" and eat yours quietly. What should you do today?

You decide to wait a bit for her to wake up, so you wait for about ten minutes, eating your breakfast. She stirs and then sits up and yawns, for a moment she seems confused by the breakfast on the nightstand. Then she turns around and looks at you.

"H-hey you're still here." Okay, you almost chuckled at that one.

"Yeah, wanted to say that I had fun and we should go out again sometime." Don't want to sound too creepy, that would be bad.

"I think I would like that." You say your goodbyes and go to your car. You decide that you should probably go to the lab and check on RON. You once again drive your car through the seedy streets and arrive at your lab again. The door opens with a beep and RON greets you.

"Good morning Sir, how was your night?"

"Great RON, now how did yours go?"

"Sir, the patent for the Micro-Actuators went through today, your investments increased in value, and the Potential generator should be done in a few hours."

"Excellent work RON, please field a call for Swordsman now, I wish to discuss the core with him." you could get used to a robot butler.

I'm just looking and everyone wants us to be some sort of majestic dorky armor/weaponsmith for people. Dont we need to fight too? Plasma blades or Self Improvement would be good choices.

We are pretty much going down the tony stark route, but instead of just being a genius, also able to mind meld with tech, which lets us use stuff like the BBEG from big hero 6 movie.

Completely situational, like real life.
>>40523203
I don't have levels, they're more like descriptors, but you will be able to tel when it's bad, trust me.

You might want to, if fighting with your body is the plan, you've never been in a real fight, so you don't know if your powers help that.

Things can change in an instant, like when you almost nuked Cosmopolis, if you had, I doubt that you would even still be Thomas Cairn. Changes in plans can happen pretty quickly.

we form what i can tell is that we are currently building our self up a with tech and with this new perk we can pick a weapon and utility tech to research

What would you have done if we had nuked the city? sped forward months later with the MC some kind of energy being/living inside tech?

Or would we be looking at full body scarring kind of bad things?

Different character, blast happened and then it becomes somewhat like Infamous with random Supers appearing daily. Thomas Cairn would have made a lasting impact on the setting, but not in a good way.

Should have had a "Doctor Manhattan" entry on the roll table for the explosion
>>
>>40523494
Wow, a roll table for how you nuked would have been fun. Real rolltable went something like this.

100-96: You made a new element that functions like the PE!

5-95: Horrible blast scars Thomas for life and forces new MC while he recovers.

1-4: Cosmopolis no longer exists... you fucked up superhard.
>>
>>40523577
ohh thank god i rolled that 98 then because damn
>>

What if we doublecritted (pass or fail) then?
