You are on your horse, hooves pounding through the spirit mist as you make your way through the darkened roads outside of Dranau. You pull your leather coat tighter around your neck as you push through the dying light to the manor at the edge of the forests. You are well known as one of the best messengers in this part of Nephalia, with a penchant for magic and quick wits that are hard to match.

You were paid good money to deliver a mysterious package in Havengul to have it delivered to one of the abandoned mansions on the outside of the port city. The fellow seemed a bit sketchy, but he paid good money and you trusted your gut. With a sack of gold pieces in your pocket and a knife hidden in your jacket, you took off.

As you approached the drop off, you start to notice a few noises coming from the mist near the edge of the forests. It sounds like a woman crying and footsteps approaching the road. Your horse rears a little, but you manage to keep her under control.

You dismount your horse, giving her the command to stay in place. Unless her life is in danger, she is well trained enough to stay put. You pull out your knife and approach the sound, staying pressed against the trees and staying out of sight. The mist is very thick, and you can sense the magic in the moist night air.

Eventually, you reach the source of the sound and you have to contain the gasp of air. A woman, in a ragged dress and clutching the stump where her right arm used to be, is running wildly through the trees. You wonder why she is moving this way, but then you see that both of her eyes have been sewn shut. You want to go to help her, but then you see a zombie crawling along the ground after her. She is just blindly running, and only seems to barely know how to escape the pursuer.

You rush forward and take the woman’s hand gently.

“Follow me.” You say to her, and given no other option she just follows after you as you rush back towards your horse. The mist is thick, but you are used to the stirring of magic and navigate the Spirit Fog and you find the beautiful mare. She whinnies a bit at the sight of you, and you quickly push the woman up onto the saddle. You turn around and see an even more terrifying sight.

At least ten zombies, each in varying states of decay, are shambling out of the mist. Most of them look like regular risen dead, but one or two look stitched together. This isn’t just the work of a regular necromancer, but a Stitcher. Someone who experiments on the dead and uses alchemy as well as magic to commit terrible acts.

You saddle up onto the horse and are about to take off. The road stretches out in two directions. One approaching the decrepit houses that were your original destination, and the other leading through dark woods and, eventually, a city. The woman is completely silent, clutching onto you with one hand and trembling quietly.

You never know. They might help fight off the zombies. They may wind up being the one's who made them, in which case appeal to them. They may be the one who did this to the woman. We might get extra payment for returning her...

You decide that it might be a little safer to head to the mansions. Regardless of the risk, you know for a fact that the woods are dangerous when the sun is down. You turn the horse back toward the road and you head down the road. Eventually, it turns into rough stone, and then smooth cobblestone and you see tall stone and metal gates. The gates are hanging loosely, and you trot inside. A quick peek back and you can’t see any movement in the mist. The woman is still silent as the grave, and only her shallow breathing tells you that she is still alive.

You approach the house and on the wide grounds approaching the front desk you think you see a figure approach the house and go inside. You reassure yourself that your knife is safely under your belt and approach. You stop the horse and you tell the woman to stay on the horse while you finish something up. She doesn’t nod, just stays perfectly still.

You knock on the door and you hear a shuffling coming from inside.

“H-hello?” a shaky voice calls out.

“I have a package from Havengul. But there are undead around and I found a woman in dire need of assistance!” You yell, and the man stays quiet for a minute.

“Please wait. I must retrieve the Master.”

The voice is silent, and you hear a shuffling. You think you hear steps, much larger steps from inside, but you can’t be sure that its not just creaking of the house.

You ready your spells as you wait for whatever comes next. It was a good thing you were prepared, because in an instant the door opens and a giant arm smashes down on you. You phase out of existence for a moment and you appear on your back at least 10 feet away. It is a giant skaab, an unnatural mixture of human parts that are sewn together to make a true monster.

The beast squeezes through the door and moves towards you. You see a small man behind the door, hunched over and stitched together in much the same way as the behemoth. The two things just stare at you as you try to move away. You might be able to run away, but then there is your horse and the woman. You could try to get to them, but the beast is now standing between you two.

You give your horse the order to run away, and being one of the most intelligent animals you’ve ever encountered, it immediately darts for the exit. Sadly, the woman wasn’t quite coherent enough to realize ‘RUN’ meant that she should be aware and after only a few feet, she fell off. She is now sobbing on the ground, clutching the seeping stub of her late arm.

The monster is now turned towards her and is reaching out an arm, each digit made up of what looks like children’s limbs, toward her. It lifts up an arm and it seems like it is going to crush her. You could try to get her out of the way, or just take off after your horse.

You are floating. For a second, you think you are dead. But this isn’t like anything you’ve heard about in the books you’ve read on Flight Alabaster. You realize that you have all your limbs, that you can feel your skin and the rush of magic all around you. It is more concentrated and diverse than anything you’ve ever experienced.

You see paths break apart around you, and windows blink in and out of existence. You see vast expanses of ice, and fire, building reaching into the clouds and tunnels going far beneath the earth. You reach out a hand and you touch onto one of these paths that steady below your touch and you see two paths open before you.

In one you see beautiful architecture and a railing that overlooks wide cloudy expanses and people in elaborate costume0-like clothes enjoying the view. In another, a wide green field with some sort of humanoid figures you can’t make out rushing along in the distance.

You reached the small window and, pressing it, a force tugged you inside and soon you were standing in a brilliant green field. Flowers grew everywhere around you, and you saw bright trees lush with life all around. This was completely unlike anywhere you’ve seen save for personal gardens in the heart of Thraben on your scant few visits.

After only a few minutes, your thick leather garb is too much and you take off the jacket and throw it over your shoulder. You are now in your long-sleeved shirt and your riding pants. You see some figures in the distance, you think they look humanoid but you can’t be sure.

This place is strange, and you are naturally wary of any illusions given the areas you have worked in.

You walk through the field and apprehensively approach the figures. They sit atop some sort of elk-like creatures and were examining the distance. You held your hands up a little, trying to seem as non-threatening as possible. The humanoid creatures had long, curled horns and each one had green armor that looked more like leaves than clothe.

“Um. Hello! Greeting to you fine fellows.” Two of the figures pointed their spears at you without a moments hesitation, but they stayed still as the third of their party looked down at you. They whispered to each other for a moment, then the middle one dismounted his elk and stood before you.

“Creature, what are you? You are too tall and slender to be one of the Kithkin, but you lack any of the features of an elf.”

“My name is Darien Kells. I’m just a person, a messenger from Ulm, near Havengul.” The elf creature looked down at you in disdain and a hint of confusion.

“The ‘Person’ will come with us. The Exquisite Shal will want to see you.” The other elves approached you and you felt an air of magic begin to weave around you. They will probably try to bind you with magic, so your Misty Step won’t be able to help you.

You try to convince them to to keep you unbound, offering to come along peacefully, but they refuse. You feel the magical binds wrap around you, and in an instant you see green and black markings floating around your wrists. You glare up for an instant at the figures, but now they won’t even deign you with a passing glance.

Soon you are forced to march across the fields, moving at a brisk pace to keep up with the trotting elk and the weird humanoid creatures. Soon, as you walk across the idyllic looking landscapes as a slave, a weird twist on your life before now, you see a great forest open up before you. But unlike any forest you’ve seen before, the trees seem to be grown in particular shapes like beautiful walls to protect the rest of the woods.

There is an unsettling feeling in your gut as you walk, and try to keep yourself calm as you step through the gate into the mysterious woods in a world completely different from your own.
