You are Jack O'Connor, better known to the public as the legendary legacy superhero called FREEDOM EAGLE, and this crazy woman standing on you is going to stab you in the face if you don't stop her.

And the worst part is you're 95% sure she isn't actually a supervillain, and you're once again for what must be the umpteenth time in your life caught up in one of those ridiculous mix-ups where two heroes fight each other over the dumbest possible misunderstandings.

You've been aware of this phenomena for years now, but for some reason you're never able to see it coming when you're actually in the middle of the whole thing.

You're just better able to appreciate the irony of the situation you guess?

That seems like a SHITTY upside right now as this 5'10" woman pins you down and readies herself to stab that short sword into your face.

"Return what you stole, villain! Tell me where you have taken it!"

"Look," you cough out through the effortless pressure her leg exerts on your chest, holding up your hands to show her that they're empty. "If you'll just listen to me-"

"No!" she shouts in obvious anger. "You'll NOT fool me twice, no matter HOW many strangely garbed foes you dangle before me!"

You sigh loudly.

"Well, at least I tried," you say to her, then engage your anti-gravity flight engine and thrust up from your position into the air!

She gasps in surprise as the sudden upsurge in momentum seeming to come from nowhere throws her off-balance! She manages to leap off of you as you rise, agilely backflipping through the air to land perfectly on her feet in a ready stance as you mimick the motion simultaneously, acrobatically landing without deploying your wings!

"Anti-gravity flight?" she says in surprise.
Except she doesn't say it in English, instead using a language you've heard and studied but haven't heard used in a LONG time, since you were a teenager almost.

"Atlantean?" you mumble under your breath, raising an eyebrow in confusion.

How the hell does she speak Atlantean? Nobody speaks Atlantean except, well, Atlanteans and she sure as hell isn't one of those from what you can tell.
The fire on the deck is so hot that an Atlantean would be sweating their tits off, but she's not even winded it looks like.

Your point your visor at her sword and shield again as you slowly circle each other, waiting for each other to make a move.

The readings you're getting are weird. Composition reads mostly gold and copper, except it's way stronger then those and gold and copper don't alloy very well.
It also has some kind of weird anomolous energy signiture that is confusing your visor.

"Shit. Magic," you mutter, hardening the pseudometal on your gloves to maximum durability to compensate.

If you want my opinion it's because villain-focused comic stories of that flavor tare nearly universally panned as the edgiest of edgefest pieces of crap in an entire era of edgy-ass comic book stuff, and rightfully so.

There's much more intelligent and thoughtful ways to do supervillains (Soon I Will Be Invincible is one of my favorite novels) and that isn't it.

Fair 'nuff. I do love playing the straight/sane man though.
>>
You take off into the air and toss a few quills her way with your left hand.

You're not ACTUALLY trying to hit her, but it'll keep her on-guard which will be good for stopping her from killing you at least.

She easily deflects them with her shield and leaps up off of some of the huge storage crates, even kicking off one with just one leg to go sailing at you like a bullet, leading with a flèche thrust as she keeps her shield protecting her!

She's INSANELY fast. You were hardly seven feet up before she matched your height in less then half a second, just using her leg muscles and the environment around you!

You manage to parry her sword thrust, with your right gauntlet in mid-air as she collides with you, but she slams her shield into you like a battering ram, unbalancing you as you fly, banging from the impact into one of the cargo crates as you rise up, her hanging onto you by hooking her sword-arm around the gauntlet you parried with!

She's GOOD.
She isn't just a super who relies on superior physical abilities; she compensated for your flight using the environment around you, and feinted a big dramatic fencing stab at you while actually planning to body-check you with the shield, all in mid-air without even being able to fly herself!

You push her off (it seems like you're physically stronger at least, though not by much), landing on top of the huge cargo crate even as she lands on her feet and charges you at running speeds WELL above human norm, trying closing the gap before you can take off again!
>>
You have two problems now, you analyze as she approaches at what your visor estimates to be 65kph.

One; if she's somehow an Alantean (you're still trying to wrap your head around that one), then she won't know you are even if you explain it. Freedom Eagle is one of the most recognizable heroes in the US, and even in Europe thanks to granddad's exploits during WWII, but Atlanteans are isolationists who have next to zero contact with the outside world.

Plus, she might have time-traveled here or something. You REALLY hope it's not time travel. Time travel is the absolute WORST.

Two, getting tricky with her doesn't seem to work.
Most supers aren't actually trained fighters, and half of the time fight like pro-wrestlers; lots of muscle and speed and show, but she's not just superhuman, she's actually highly trained on top of it.

Usually you can beat most folks by combining both your training and your powers from your gear, but she almost seems to employ the same tactics.

>WDYD?

>Let her get close and try to overpower her in a grapple. You seem to be physically stronger then her at least.

>Match her hit-for-hit. If you can make it an even match you can tire her out, maybe get her to see reason.

You brace yourself this time as she charges, parrying her first thrust with an arm-block and tossing a left jab that she easily blocks with her shield but moves her back a bit from the force of the blow!

She thrusts again as you deliberately give her an opening, but you notice for a brief second she hesitates with the thrust, which you use to grapple her arm and drag her into an arm lock!

Interesting. What was that?

You yank her down to the ground one-handed, but she almost immediately wraps her legs (which are really nice by the way) around your arm and drags you down with her, your back hitting the ground as she tries to put you into a joint-dislocating submission hold!

You don't wait for her to brace her legs against your shoulder, instead hauling with all the superhuman strength afforded to you by the gravity gauntlets and tossing her across your chest through the air one-armed while lying on your back!

That's the problem with submission holds relying on weight; they work only on the basis that the other fighter ISN'T capable of lifting a thousand times your body weight with one-arm.
They CAN work on super-strong guys mind you, but a lock like that one won't work if someone reacts fast enough.

She sails through the air, landing cat-footed yet again, and you kip-up to your feet!

You think back a second and take up a ready stance as she takes the initiative again and rushed you.

Just before she gets to you, you abruptly drop your guard and give her a clear shot as she thrusts her sword at your lower throat!
You hope you're right about this.

Suddenly she pulls back, stopping the red-gold tip inches away from the fatal thrust, her face confused as she pauses

"See? NOW will you-" you begin but she then spins counter-clockwise, her dark hair whirling, and brings up her shield and slams it into you, knocking you off your feet and onto you back!

"Oh COME ON!" you grumble, and she once again pins you, this time her sword posed right above your throat.

"Clever," she compliments. "You saw my hesitation to strike and surmised I would not be willing to kill you. An accurate belief, but unfortunately for you I DON'T need to kill you to win. The others weren't nearly as skilled warriors, I must admit."

"Thanks," you say, not bothering to use your AG harnass to escape.
She'd be ready for it this time.

"Who are you? Tell me your name, that I might find your allies and retrieve what you stole," she asks.

"Freedom Eagle," you say flatly.

Much to your surprise, she rocks back a bit and backs away, but clenches her weapons tighter.

"No...no, that's impossible. You lie!" she says, though you see her noticing your wings and taking a close look for the first time.

Just that moment a rescue helicopter from the ECPD flies overhead, and from a loudspeaker comes Captain Wroth's voice as a spotlight swoops over you both.

"FREEDOM EAGLE! DO YOU NEED A HAND DOWN THERE?!"

You look back at her with a raised eyebrow.

"No need Captain, I think I'm good. We're engaged in spirited debate," you say into your helmet, putting one hand to it, and standing up.

"So, how the hell does an Atlantean know my name? You guys aren't usually really friendly with the surface," you ask.

She hesitantly answers, still not entirely dropping her guard.

"I am NOT an Atlantean," she says proudly. "My name is Lyna. I am an envoy of my people, who are hidden from the outside wor-"

"THE ENVOY?!" you shout in disbelief and shock. "You're THE ENVOY?"

You remember your grandfather's stories of WWII and the Liberty League.
One of the strangest members was Sarlyn, a man of great intelligence and physical prowess who claimed to be an "envoy" (which is what the papers called him after he showed up in Pearl Harbor to aid the wounded) of his hidden people on the Utopian Isle.

After the first League was debanded thanks to the HUAC hearings in the 50's Sarlyn completely vanished and hasn't been heard from since, though you've heard here and there that some superheroes have been to Utopia since then.

"Y...yes? You know me?" she says, sounding nervous all of a sudden.

"But he was a man?" you point out.

"Councilor Sarlyn? You KNOW Councilor Sarlyn?" she says in total shock. "You ARE the Freedom Eagle! But how?"

Shit.
You think you just got into a brawl with a legacy hero from your grandpa's own super team.

"Look, let's talk in a bit, can you help me clear out the damage here? I could use some extra muscles and you clearly have them," you ask, hastily changing the subject.

"Oh!" she says, looking around the ruins of the boat. "I...apologize. After the explosion I-"

You hold up a hand, a smile playing on your face.

"Later, let's get to work," you say, leaping off the crate into the air, and she sheathes her sword and follows you on foot.

You spend the next two hours fixing things on the boat with her, putting out fires and removing damaged parts, keeping everything from falling apart.

She's silent and concentrates on her work with you, not needing much instruction and actually having a few ideas you wouldn't have thought of when trying to carefully fix the boat.

A brief conversation with Wroth and the Coast Guard about what to do and telling them that you're going with the woman you introduce as the superhero "Envoy" (much to Lyna's confusion) to investigate the villans that caused the explosion.

You then pick her up (asking her permission and fly her downtown) with her in your arms as you navigate to one of the larger skyscrapers.

You resist the urge to sing "A Whole New World."
See? You can be an adult.

She looks over the city as you fly, and there's a smile on her face.

"This is a beautiful land, Freedom Eagle. My people would likely not agree, but I can see why my uncle so treasures his memories with the heroes of the Liberty League," she says as you put her down and land next to her, watching the night skyline of Emerald City next to her.

"So no offense, but why are you here exactly? Your uncle only came away from your homeland to observe the Second World War. I know he left after the atomic bombings on Japan, and nobody's heard from you guys since."

You remember your granddad sounding ashamed that they couldn't convince the OSS to stop the bombings, and how regretful he was when Sarlyn left because of them.

"I came because my homeland came under attack five months ago, Freedom Eagle," she says sadly, pushing some dark strands of her behind her ear as the summer wind picks up. "Someone from the outside world has penetrated the sanctuary of our homeland."

Apologies for the 90's art. It's remarkably hard to find pics of Wonder Woman in a toga.

"How so? I mean, who did it? Why?" you ask, trying to run down a list of potential suspects in your head.
Unfortunately the list is long; there's WAY too many would-be world conquerors around.

"We do not know. Understand, my people have NO weapons. We engage in martial training and athletics for the purposes of personal physical development, just as we engage in education to broaden our minds. We are stronger and quicker then the average human outside the world and your technology is primitive compared to our own," she says, and your left eye twitches at the last bit.

You'd like to think she meant "in general", not to say your gear is primitive.

"But we have NO weaponry, and few of us take our martial training as a serious method of combat. Myself and my uncle are perhaps the ONLY two. Our isolation protects us, but made us vulnerable as well."

"So what'd they take?" you ask, folding your arms and putting a finger to your chin in thought.

"Sorry?' she says confused.

"You're here looking for something, thought I was one of the people who attacked and stole it. You come from a hidden land with fantastically advanced technology compared to us. You have no weapons there (I'm assuming those are ceremonial and not used in actual combat), so they must have taken some extremely advanced piece of tech. Something that you can't get off the black market either like you can but cold fusion plants or flight devices or plasma weapons, something unique."

She hesitates before answering, clearly surprised at your logical deductive capabilities.

"The Azure Ray," she says quietly.

"What's it do?"

"I....truthfully, I'm not positive how it works. It is an energy menipulator that stimulates biological energies in ways even WE don't fully understand. When it was originally created we used it on ourselves regularly, giving us the enhanced strength and physical abilities we have and tripling our lifespan compared to outlanders. But if tuned differently it can alter genetics, cause mutations, and all sorts of other affects. We use it to heal severely injured people to help them recover faster."

Shit.
Sounds like something that could give people superpowers.

The timing is wrong for the Silver Storm to have been caused by it; that happened SIX months ago, not five.

But superhero stuff rarely runs on coincidences, you've noticed in your life.

"You can buy cold fusion technology in the outlands illegally?" she says, sounding somewhat shaken by the idea. "I...wasn't aware your technology has advanced to such a complex level."

"It hasn't, exactly," you explain. "Super-science is always really impressive but isn't always very practical. My flight harnass for instance runs on a power source that never needs to be replaced or recharged but can't power a city or anything, and the element that it runs on is the single rarest substance on the face of the planet."

"It's incredible actually," she admits. "We have antigravity engines but the devices we use to achieve the same effect are large and power personal vehicles. I honestly can't even see the power source on yours."

As she talks she looks around you, trying to find it.

You peel up the armor fabric from your torso and show her the harnass itself underneath and the daka crystal-powered flight engine on your chest, with a smile.

"It's the same one my grandfather, the original Freedom Eagle used. You thought I meant I was HIM when I said who I was, didn't yo-" you say with a laugh, then blink as you realize she's looking a bit lower then your chest.

Your abs, specifically.

"My eyes are up here," you say, lowering your shirt with a smirk.

She blinks and looks up, pushing her hair back again and obviously trying not to blush.

"Anyway, how many were there? What did they use as weapons? And I'm sorry if this is private, but it would help if you told me where Utopia IS. That could let me narrow down the number of people who could have stolen it."

Surprisingly she nods to you.
You figured she'd resist revealing the location to you. Maybe being the grandson of one her uncle's best friends helps.

"Utopia is on an island in the seas south of the continent of North America, in a region you call 'The Carribean'."

That explains the toga and sandals at least; it would be pretty warm there most of the time.

"The island is impossibe to find normally and chart because it lies in a naturally overlapping dimensional distortion field around five hundred thousand miles in length that prevents people from finding it by accident most of the time."

"Wait, Utopia Isle is located in the Bermuda Triangle Dimensional Distortion?" you say in surprise.

AEGIS discovered years ago that the Triangle was the area of a metastable dimensional anomoly that distorted space and time in random ways.
At a certain height the distortion no longer affects things, which is why modern commercial airlines aren't affected by it anymore, but sometimes it still spits out weird shit.

Once you got dumped into some kind of weird-ass parallel dimension with dinosaurs and crazy Mayan deities and cave-people by it.

That was about the worst summer vacation from high school ever.

"So then the island must be in a stable region at the center right? Without some kind of advanced piece of tech there'd be no way to find Utopia, even if you sailed over it's exact location," you note, thinking.

Utopia. Literally, "a place that is nowhere". Huh.

"Correct," she confirms. "And even then without the right dimensional vibration frequency you might not be able to locate it thanks to the effects of the Triangle."

That cinches it.
There's really only one logical explanation.

"This was an inside job."

"Sorry?" she says, clearly not familiar with crime terminology.
Likely because there's no crime where she comes from it sounds like.

"Sorry, I meant that they'd have to have help. Either from someone INSIDE Utopia or from someone outside who knew it's secrets," you clarify.

"But...no, that's impossible, who would-?!" she begins but you gently cut her off.

"It's the only logical explanation. It COULD be another type of extra-dimensional incursion I suppose, but if that's true you couldn't have tracked them all the way here, so we have to assume that's not the case. Let me make another guess; your uncle told you you were the one that had to come out here and get it back, right?"

She seems taken aback yet again.

"He also told you to tell nobody about it. You came here in secret on your own," you elaborate, and she nods, comprehension dawning on her face.

"Sarlyn KNEW how the outside world worked. He spent years out here, solving crimes and stuff like that. He also knew only someone with some sort of inside knowledge could get into Utopia in the first place, let alone what to steal and where exactly it was. He knew if you told someone they might have tipped off the thieves."

You're putting some other things together, but you won't say them aloud. Not yet. Not until you do some more research.

"Well we can't do anything about it now. We'll get started tomorrow morning. Do you have a place to stay?"

"What? No. I...don't really have currency either. I arrived here by either stowing away on cargo ships or lying about being a superhero needing help to get to places," she admits.

"Thought as much. You can stay at my place then. There's enough room and we can get you set up with proper clothes and stuff. I also have research materials you can read if you wanted to know more about things out here."

"Oh, do you?" she says, sounding elated at the thought. "I've always been fascinated about the outside world but I've had so little material about it at home! That would be most helpful!"

"No problem," you say, helping her up and spreading your wings again. "And you're wrong, you know."

"Sorry? About what?" she asks, confused.

"About lying about being a superhero," you say with a smile. "You ARE one."

She blushes again, and her face has a different expression this time.
Something almost like awe.

Good. You were going for that.
Even in Utopia, people sometimes need the message, the same one you sent flying to the ship earlier.

>"I'm here. I can hear you. I can help."
>"And you don't have to be afraid anymore."

She takes you hand and you go flying into the night air once again.

You arrive at your penthouse apartment in a few minutes, flying at an easy pace so she doesn't get uncomfortable.

When you land she looks around in surprise.

"I wasn't aware outlanders had such elaborate lifestyles. I was told you land was a land of scarcity for many," she says, touching the leather couch appreciatively.

"It IS, but I'm a lot better off then most. Worked hard to get here, hope to help others get here too. My corporation works on advanced technologies that are designed to improve life for the largest number of people possible."

"Corporations. A non-political entity who's function is to service and stimulate the economic processes of the outlander nations while making a 'profit' to increase their own growth," she recites, like a lesson in school or something.

"Uh....yeah. That," you say, frowning.

You remove your helmet and gloves after heading into your room, getting changed to casual attire.

"So, don't take this the wrong way but-" you ask, walking out in a pair of jeans and a black t-shirt and heading into the kitchen.

"You're going to ask how much I know about the outlands?" she says, anticipating the question as she sits on the couch and smiles, finding it to her liking, but making a slight face. "This is cold."

"Sorry, I just got finished unpacking a few days ago," you say, opening the fridge and looking for food.

"I am highly educated on the outlands, by my Uncle and whatever else we can find. I can speak several languages and understand the basics of your lifestyle, though the details escape me at times from lack of information. As you might expect the outlands is not a popular subject of study in Utopia."

"Hm. That's useful. Can you remember all of that stuff then?" you ask, impressed as you crack a few eggs over a frying pan.

"I remember everything. Utopians are all trained extensively in mentalism aiding in memory recollection techniques," she explains. "I have what the outlands call a 'photographic memory', though an eidetic memory is the more accurate term."

You give a low whistle as the eggs cook, impressed. You are REALLY smart, you won't lie, but your memory isn't perfect. It's hard to imagine an education system that can CREATE a perfect memory on anyone who goes through it.

"So THAT'S how you made your way up here. You spoke the languages and knew at least the basics of customs and stuff. I was wondering about that," you say with a nod as you cut peppers while the eggs cook.
>>
"My appearance also helped," she explains further. "I admit when I first arrived outside Utopia I was confused at the appearances of people. While we have the variances of skin and hair you have outside our home, physical infirmities, deformities, age, disease, and malnutrition are...strange to me. There is no such things in Utopia. Before I met you I'd wondered if perhaps the whole world outside was unhealthy."

An entire island of super-fit supermodel people with perfect memories and educations living in a post-scarcity society with no poverty, crime, or war. No wonder they're so keen on staying isolated.

"So, what exactly did the people who ambushed you on that cargo ship look like? And why were on there in the first place?" you ask, peeling open the wrapping on the chorizo and putting it on the skillet and cooking it too.

"After much effort I had tracked the stolen device to that particular ship," she explains. "I had stowed away and was in the process of looking at the many, MANY storage crates and trying to find the Azure Ray."

You think about the 400 meter cargo ship and the dozens and dozens of storage crates. That could take awhile.

"One of them was filled with technology far in advanvce of what I've seen else where in this world, and I suspected it contained the Ray. That smells good," she says from the couch, leaning up to look at it as it finishes cooking.

"It'll taste better. Then what happened?"

"The crate was filled with armed men, and one man in a strange costume. I asked who he was and he...," she hesitates. "He claimed to be a superhero. I suspected treachery, but let my guard down just enough that one of them was able to surprise me and the one who claimed to be a hero hit me with...something. I didn't see it. It was invisible and he didn't move."

"What was he wearing?"

"A green and purple suit."

"Yep. He's a supervillain," you confirm.

"He was lean, but strong-looking. Not like you, just not soft," she clarifies. "He had a helmet on, with a glowing centerpiece. I couldn't see what hit me, perhaps an energy weapon of some sort."

She looks down, thinking as you bring her the huevos rancheros, setting it down on the glass table in front of her.

"The others wore warlike gear, and held advanced energy projectile weapons. I believe they worked with or for the man in the green suit."

"Where did the ship come from originally?" you ask, having a bite from your own plate.

"A large port city in a nation called Costazul," she says, taking the fork you hand her and biting in absent-mindedly. Her eyes widen and she keeps eating.

Shit. Costazul.
You'll have to call Fletch later.

"This is good. What is this?" she asks through a mouth half-full. You wonder how long it's been since she's eaten.

"Huevos rancheros with chorizo," you say, digging in yourself.

"Ranch eggs with...chorizo?" she asks, blinking.

You guess Spanish is one of the languages she knows.

"It's a kind of spicy sausage. I'm guessing you have eggs and pork in Utopia?"

She laughs a bit.
"Yes, we have those. It's mostly synthesized though."
>>
She greedily devours her food and then sighs contentedly.

"Do you have a shower?" she asks, looking around.

"Yeah, in my room near the bed. I gotta make some calls anyway," you admit as she heads into your room.

"Sup Jack?" the flippant red-headed man says, leaning back in his chair. "How's Emerald City? Seen Dorthy yet? Is she hot?"

"Looking for an ID on a supervillain in town. Purple and green suit?" you ask.

"Can you narrow that down to slightly less everybody?" he interrupts.

"Hardy har har, Strings," you say, rolling your eyes. "Lean build, wears a helmet with a glowing centerpiece. I think he's got telekinetic powers maybe?"

Last one is a guess, but a solid one.

"Sounds familiar. Guy called Braindamage," he says, forwarding you the picture onto your comp. Looks like the purple was either an old suit or a new addition or something. "He's definitely psionic, but I'm not sure exactly what his powers and limits are. Rumor is TK, but he's never been arrested so he's not on record, plus you know....," he says and you nod as you finish his sentence.

"How psionics can be, yeah. Their powers don't always follow the same rules. Guy fits the description I was given though, that's for sure."

"Anything else man?" he asks, and you hear him pouring coffee on the other end.

"Yeah. I think I might have some super-science smuggling ring running through or out of Emerald," you say, thinking on it.

"Seriously? But that place was snoozeville before the Silver Storm. Nothing ever happened there, not even the odd super-crook bank robbery," he points out.

You think on that for a second.

"No. No it didn't," you say, scratching you chin in thought.

"What? What are you thinking?" he asks.

"Sorry, does the might Bowman need to have something explained to him? Maybe if I use a bow and arrow metaphor here this'll be easier for you to comprehend?" you snark back.

Costazul was a small South American country that had a dictatorship in the 60's that after squandering it's material wealth and natural resources cashed in instead on that decade's renewed superheroic activities by making itself a haven for super-science, especially of the illegal or morally dubious sort.

After the dictators US-educated son inherited his position he went about alining himself with left-wing groups around South America and making his country open to tourism...but still made vast amounts of money off of the super-science industry, which helped modernize the nation itself even faster.

If anything the liberalization of the country just sparked even more illegal super-science research.

"So, any idea who it could be going to here?" you ask.

"Maybe," he says, thinking. "I'll ask around, pull some threads. Ring you back if I have a lead. Call me if you need help Wings."

"Sure thing Strings," you say just as behind him you hear Lyna's voice.

"Eagle? There's towels in here, right? May I borrow some of your clothing?"

You hang up.
That you do NOT need right now.

Like, pretty people show up an inordinately large amount in your life and the lives of superheroes, you've noticed, but she blows most of them away without even trying.

You shake Lyna's appearance off, and continue doing research, looking through historical information to see if your hunch was right.

You discover it's true; somehow, Emerald City has been totally free of superhuman activity of all kinds ever since the late 70's, right up until the Silver Storm hit.

This is statistically impossible: the USA has the highest concentration of such events on the planet, and even rural areas sees SOME of it, sometimes, and certainly they have within the last thirty-year period.

But not Emerald City, for some reason. Why?

You lean back into your chair and look out the window, lost in thought.
