"No! It's your fault that she had to sleep on the floor last night!" The blue sister says to her red twin.
"Maybe if you didn't hog so much of the bed, she wouldn't have had to!" The red twin says back.

"That's enough you two." I wearily grab Julie and Haruko's ears and pull them up from the breakfast table.
I am Itsukuma Masami, and I'm finally home and out of danger.
For the moment. These moments of reprieve never seem to last very long. Today you've decided to confront your best friend's seemingly crazy mother. Aiko's mother, Marie, turned out to be someone who hunts monsters! Myself included in that definition, unfortunately. She has taken Aiko and seemingly run off to train her hastily to fight Asai and his giant monster that is trapped inside of a bubble. Of course, Aiko really can't fight and has no reason to be fighting.
This worries me.
Mom has decided to stay behind and try to think of a magic way to defeat Asai. Her idea was to turn Asai into a human, which may weaken his powers. Which means we won't have to fight a big scary monster made from a building!

"You two are coming with me." I say to Julie and Haruko.
"Masami, wait." Julie tries to reason with me. "Where are you even going to go first to look for Aiko?"
"I'll think of something, but right now you two being alone is causing more trouble than it's worth."

I can practically feel both of them pouting at the same time.
She is right in that I'm not entirely sure where to look for Aiko first. Maybe-

I should check Aiko's house first. For one, her house is right on the way to school.
And for two, there is no way Aiko's mother left without leaving at least some trace as to what happened to her.

There's no way someone could pack up a whole family in one night and run away without doing it sloppily.
Right? I've never tried it before, so I don't really know.

I feel a tug at my sleeve, I can only guess what horror is about to unfold.
"Masami?" Haruko asks, cute smile on her face. "Which one of us is prettier?"
No.
NO NO NO NOT THIS, NOT NOW.

"You're both pretty!" I exclaim.
"Nuh uh!" Julie grabs my arm. "One of us has a beautiful suit that is crafted with all the love and care in the universe. The other one is wearing a fat dress!"
"IT'S NOT FAT YOU TOMBOY!"

"Giiiiiiiirls." I grab both of them. "This is going to be a LONG day if you two keep doing this. So I am going to make a NEW RULE! No bickering until we're back home."
"But-!"
"NO BUTS!" I stomp my foot. "This is a serious mission we should be on! I don't even know what Aiko's house must look like right now."

My question is quickly answered as the large glass building comes into sight. The front door is open, things look like they were hastily dragged out of the house. Some articles of clothing, and even a suitcase, are still sitting inside the front door.
Oh no, I am too late!

"Hello!?" I call out to the building. Maybe I was expecting it to answer or something.

Inside, the place looks as bad as I would have expected it. It's almost like someone started tearing the place apart intentionally.
Something seems almost wrong with this. I can smell freshly cooked food for one.
Suddenly, inside, I hear something metal bounce along the floor.

>Call out to anyone inside!

Okay, this is bad, the house is turned upside down and it sounds like someone is still in there!
What if it's a burglar? I mean, it probably isn't Aiko or her mother.

"Julie, Haruko, follow behind me."
I take the first step into the house.
"Hello!?" I yell, "Is anyone in here!?"

Silence.
"Do either of you have anything that can search around the house?"
"I DO!" They both yell at the same time.

"Girls, what did I just say?" I pout.
Haruko starts to glow a fierce shade of red. Slowly, a mist seems to expand and cover the floor.

What is more surprising is Julie. I look over toward her just in time to watch her TAKE OFF PART OF HER FACE and place it into the wall.
Her face! She took it off! Like.. the skin and her nose are still on her body, but her eyes and mouth are now inside of the wall!
I'm gonna faint.

Julie notes my confusion.
"Masami, you've seen me do this before!"
"No no NO! I saw you as a monster do this before, and it was scary then!"

"Ohh, it's fine. Now jus-"
Julie immediately runs straight into another wall.
"C-can you lead me by the hand for a moment? I can't see."

I sigh and grab her by the hand. The face melds into the drywall as Haruko continues to spread her red aura around the kitchen, in the cabinets, just anywhere she thinks there might be someone.

Suddenly, Julie bends down and picks her face up off the floor. I grimace watching her.
"Upstairs, in one of the bedrooms. Under the bed." She says plainly before leading the way.

There's a single small bedroom in the corner of the second floor. The other bedrooms look like a mess, but this is relatively untouched.
I can see a tiny foot poking out from under the bed.

Crouching down, I peek under.
"Hello?"
"EEK!" A small girl with shoulder-length hair exclaims. She climbs out and throws a pillow at me. "Go away! No one is supposed to be here now!"

>No!

I put my hand out as carefully as possible to the girl. She grabs a pillow and hides behind it.
"Are you Aina? Aiko's sister?"
"Y-yes."
"I'm Masami, remember me?"

"I do, but-" She doesn't drop her defense. "Listen! You really need to leave! Mom is going to be mad!"
"I know." I say to her.

Gently, I put my hand on her shoulder. She lowers the pillow, revealing her reddened cheeks.
I sit her down on the bed and give her a big hug. I can feel her crying into my shoulder as I do so.
"Please, it's okay."
"it's not." She wearily replies.

Julie sits down on her other side and hugs her as well.
I pick a strand of her hair.
"Your hair has grown since last time."
"I know." She replies, still sad, still weary.
"Do you want to tell me what happened?"

"Mom took Aiko." She says, sadly.
"Are you okay? Do you know why? Or where she took her?"
"I don't, I don't think I should be telling you."

That's a problem. You're not sure how to make her talk if she doesn't want to.
"If you don't tell me, I can't get Aiko back."
"M-mom doesn't want you to. She wanted to take me too, but I hid."

She grabs onto my shoulders, "I didn't want to make her angry! I just didn't want to leave home! I don't want to have anything to do with this!"

>Can you tell me what 'this' is?
>You don't want your sister to have anything to do with this either, right?
>What is your mother's plan, at least?
>You can hide at my place for a while, if you're scared here.

"Can you tell me what 'this' is? Why is your mother taking Aiko away?"

She hesitates, and slowly lowers her eyes into her lap.
"You don't want your sister having anything to do with 'this' either, right?"
"No, I don't."

I sigh, but try to stay warm and soothing for her.
"You can hide at my place if you want. It's probably not safe here if you're hiding from your mother."

Aina's eyes light up. She grabs my hands.
"Really? I can!?"
"If you want to. Come on, I'll show you the way home."

We stand up, and as we're doing so, Aina stops me.
"I-I think I know why Mom took Aiko."
"Hmm?"

"Y-you saw the news right? Of people saying that the Fortune building moved? I know this sounds crazy but- someone is making the building so that. Mom.. is going to make Aiko fight that someone!"

"Does Aiko have any fighting skills?"
"She doesn't." Aina is starting to swell with tears. "But Mom said she would try with her anyway, and if Aiko doesn't work out, she was going to come back for me."

Come back for-
Oh no.
"She was going to TAKE you next if Aiko-?!"
This seems wrong.
"What did she mean by 'doesn't work out'?!"

Aina looks up at me, tears swelling in her eyes still.
In that moment, I understood what she was trying to tell me.
"Aina, I need to know where Aiko is! You must tell me anything you know!"

"I-It's hard to explain! There is this place she trained at, but it's really hard to find! I don't even know how to explain where it is."
"You have to try, Aina! Tell me where it is, no matter how silly it sounds!"

"It was.."
She looks at me, eyes still puffy.
"In another world. Like this one. That's all I know about it. I don't know how to get there, I promise!"

In another-
Oh.
Oh I know where that is.

thanks for running

unless Marie's plan involves some kind of gift only one person can use at once, it was pretty dumb of her not to train both her daughters at once... or maybe she just doesn't give a fuck and wants to send aiko on a suicide mission

>We could also try to beat her to taking out the target.
That seems risky, if we don't succeed, we won't have the strength left to save Akio.
We might be able to convince her mother to fight alongside us, beating he greater evil first, from her perspective.
Its all a matter of the time frame. If she thinks she has enough time to train Akios sister after she failed, then that means she will try attacking it sometime today or tomorrow, or the timer runs out before she could train the second fighter.
>>
>>40546940
>We could also try to beat her to taking out the target.
We haven't even figured out exactly how to do it yet, and evidently she already has a plan, so that's not going to work. Beating her to it also might not actually prevent her from going through with the plan.
