Recently: You've won your 8th badge and had a talk with Robin's mom, the current champion! You took Robin on a date. Her mom showed up and challenged Robin to a match.

General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible.

Write-ins for all votes or always welcome and encouraged. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Very important or contentious votes may be redone in a stricter voting system as it comes up.

Combat involves rolls! Once there's a clear winner, we roll for the move accuracy/crit/secondary effect. Usually it's just three 1d100s. Sometimes you can get a modifier from circumstances, so be creative! Add flair, do tricks with moves, mess with terrain, whatever!

Call me out on a mistake and receive an apology butt or suggestive picture.

“Come on,” you take Robin by the hand. “You need rest. I’ll get a nice hotel room”

She looks up at you, then takes your hand. “O-okay.” You lift her up. “Do you want me to tie you up again, or-”

“Rest,” you repeat.

She looks down, embarrassed. “Okay.”

You both hold hands on your walk back. About halfway there, Robin grabs a hold of your arm and squeezes. “Kat, you love me, right?”

“Yeah...” You don’t like where this is going.

“And you won’t leave me?” You see desperation in her eyes. “Even if I can’t be who I want you to be? I’ll... I’ll try my best. I’ll do anything you want. Anything.” Robin kisses the small of your neck.

You stop her. “Robin. Don’t do that. I love you for you, okay?”

The desperation fades from her eyes. “...Right.” She kisses you on the cheek. “Right. I-I’m sorry. I love you too.”

You stop by the Pokemon center, meet with everyone, and arrange to get a hotel room. You walk Robin up to the room.

“Do you think I could win?” She’s still sort of staring off at nothing.

“Well... maybe. You fooled her with a few of the things you pulled at the gym.”

Robin keeps staring off as you tuck her in. “Do you think I should battle her?”

You sigh, not knowing what to tell her. “I don’t know. It seems really fishy. It could be some sort of trick.”

Robin’s eyes flutter down. That encounter really took a lot out of her. “Maybe you’re right.”

You turn to her, but she’s already passed out.

You catch your reflection in the mirror. You get the feeling that things are going to change soon. You barely recognize the girl staring back at you. This girl stands confident, assured, strong. She has a tan, scars, well fitting clothes, and longer hair than you remember.

But still just a girl.

You hitch your pants back up and quietly slip out of the hotel room. You figure a good way to clear your head is to head out somewhere and play the flute with Meloetta.

Of course, you could bring a friend or two along, or call someone up on the way.

You don’t want to bring everyone, you’d draw too much attention and onlookers.

You decide it’s best just to go with Meloetta. You want to be able to follow your whims and really lose yourself.

You start making your way down to the lobby. Almost as soon as you get to the street, you bump into Erin. She sees and heads over.

“Hey! Glad I found you.” She smiles.

“You are?”

She reaches into a pocket. “Yeah! We had a teleconference with the head office. You’re hot!” She catches herself, remembering you have a girlfriend and might take that the wrong way. “Everyone wants a piece of you. The marketing people are begging for more merchandise. The film we have now is going to be sold in a box set as season 1.” She looks really excited as she talks. She leans in close. “They want to get you for a movie, album, and a bunch of other stuff!”

She goes over all the details she’s apparently not supposed to tell you yet. Devon Corp wants to strike while you’re hot and get you producing content for the next three months. They’re preparing a contract that has Robin, Vance, Jeanine, and Clair all also getting a massive paycheck.

“Wow.” You’re not sure how you feel about all this. It’s a lot to process.

“I can’t tell you the exact numbers,” she leans in again, “but all of your friends can buy yachts, and they can race them around the gigantic pool in your mega-yacht.”

You chat a bit more, but she seems to be able to see you’re already pretty pre-occupied. Eventually, she leaves, giving you a congratulatory pat on the back. “Think about it,” she tells you. “These sorts of things don’t last long. They’ll want an answer pretty quickly when they pitch it to you tomorrow.”

Just throwing this idea for consideration:
Robin's mom said she will let Robin choose conditions of their match. If Robin decides to go with it, we could bend that for her andvantage.
Make it 1 on 1 and trade Meloeta to Robin for the match (or before and have them train in secret for a bit to get in sync).
Obviously this needs both of them to be okay with it, but I wager if we explain to Meloeta how much this would mean for Robin, she might go with it. This would give Robin both strong fighter and element of surprise.
Worth a try?

Not really, in my opinion.
Meloetta is hardly invincible, in a match between the Champions pokemon that she trained since who knows when, and Robin using a pokemon she used for a day at most, I would bet on the Champion.
Robin relies on tricks using special traits of her pokemon, she would be hurt by not being familiar with a pokemon even more than normally.
>>
>>40546426
same. something about this just doesn't feel right to me.
>>
>>40546432
She is the pokemon league champion and a terrible human being

If Robin wins she's the champ, if she loses but is impressive her mother plans to spirit her away for "Training"
>>
>>40546432
If she wins she got championship, if she lost she got trained by her mother.

Oh wait, it will probably separate us from her. Hmm.
>>
>>40546426
I'm a bit torn on it, I'm not quite sure what her mothers angle here is. Its obviously nothing good for Robin, but it could be outirhgt malevolent, like using the battle to toy with her and crush her confidence, or just callous tiger mom stuff where she 'thinks' she is training her for the better.
In the second case it might be good to agree to the match and twist her arm to have Kat come with them when they go train fore three months.
>>
>>40546458

I thought it was if she wins she get's the special training
>>
>>40546456

How does she plan to take her away? Kidnap her? I can't see that going well. Some legal bullshit? I think we should just convince Robin to not accept those condition (if is possible.)
>>
>>40546473
I think we can persuade her to come with us, though... err. That may means reduction in lewd time...
>>
>>40546480
No, if she wins, she becomes the champion.
Of course we don't know what exactly that entails, so it might end up being a bad thing too.
>>
>>40546491
Uh, she is Robin's mother? And Robin will probably jump if she commands Robin to do so?
>>
>>40546491
>How does she plan to take her away? Kidnap her?
Robin would agree to the condition of the match, so it would be voluntarily from Robins side. How she intends to prevent Kat from following, thats a different question.

>>40546501
>That may means reduction in lewd time...
Or increase., depending on how open her mom is.
>>
>>40546516
>And Robin will probably jump if she commands Robin to do so?

Robin has years of parental issues though.
>>
>>40546523
> Or increase., depending on how open her mom is.

Don't be lewd, anon.
>>
>>40546516
>And Robin will probably jump if she commands Robin to do so?
Robin hates her mother. She blames her for destroying her family and turning her father into the asshole he is now.
>>
>>40546502
Why is she doing this again?

>>40546516
Why is Kat not pointing out how twisted and wrong that is to Robin? I can't imagine she will have such a hard time convincing her.
>>
>>40546542
And if she goes with her mother, everything will be okay again!

Well, that's one route anyway.
>>
>>40546545
>Why is she doing this again?

>>40546545
>Why is Kat not pointing out how twisted and wrong that is to Robin?
Because Robin knows that?
>>
>>40546545

Nor am I. It is just paranoia talking.
>>
>>40546563
>And if she goes with her mother, everything will be okay again!
Not at all. Literally everyone in Robins family resents everyone else.
They got some major issues.
>>
>>40546417
Normally, I'd agree with that. But this really would be a long shot and given the circumstances I'd go with whatever gets the job done, idealism be damned.

>>40546422
>>40546444
That is true, and that is why we should try something else. I mean - her mom might have social intelligence of a brick but otherwise seems pretty damn smart, chances are she deduced ho Robin rolls just from watching that one match. She will expect Robin to play with trickery and be prepared fo that. Hence why Robin should try more direct force for once.

>>40546426
That is a valid point. Too many variables there. My idea is more of a hypothetical pitch, I'm not gonna force it.
>>
She said she would train Robin to be Champion if she wins

>“What about them?” She glares daggers at you. “I have to accept any challenges from anyone who beats them, but the championship is still mine to wager if I want to. Anyone that can beat me would be able to beat them.” She turns back to Robin. “If you win, you’re the next champion, just like that. If I win, I promise I’ll spend the next three months training you, teaching you everything I know.”

You decide to check out the spot Robin’s mom will be waiting at. At the very least, you can see if there’s anything fishy about it.

You take out Meloetta too. She happily floats along. Only after a few blocks does she start to be a bit concerned about your unusual silence.

“I just have a bit on my mind,” you tell her, tapping your head. “Worried.”

She nods, understandingly. You catch a hint of the pity she showed the first time you met and asked if she could fix Robin’s eye.

“Back for a rematch?”

You freeze, turning your head. You see Robin’s mom, standing in the open.

But she’s not alone. There’s a short, balding, pudgy man standing on the opposite side.

“I ain’t here for that. I just came to see see the sights.” His voice is gruff and sarcastic. “Faeden is beautiful this time of year, despite you showing up.”

“Bitterness does not become you,” her regal tone contrasts against his. “Well, no, it does. Your time ended and you never did get over it, did you?”

He grunts. “You seem confident that your time won’t. There’s a lot of strong trainers this year. Maybe they’ll finally knock your ass off that pedestal. Become the new champ”

She laughs. “It’s just a title, old man. I couldn’t care less about it.”

That really seems to big him. He glares at her, then turns away and walks off. As soon as he’s gone, she turns to you. “I know you’re there. I don’t know why.”

>Ignore her. Go talk to that old guy

“Who was he?”

She laughs. “You don’t trust me, do you?”

You step closer, Meloetta follows. You keep a straight face, but Meloetta’s shows your dislike of the woman. “Hard to trust someone that avoids a simple question.”

“Remind you of yourself?” Her eyes suddenly turn sharp. Just as quickly, they turn soft and warm again. “He was the old champion. A relic of the old days, and a hypocrite.”

Your eyes tweak up a bit, but you go back to casually looking around the arena. It seems like a plain dirt area. There’s a small elevated area off to the side that would be ideal for the camera crew. You can’t find anything else overly suspicious or out of place.

“Questions?” She takes a hold of your arm, squishing against it just like Robin did before. It feels extremely wrong. She backs away after seeing the look on your face. “I’ll answer anything you want, if you do just one thing for me.”

Your struggle to keep your eyes from narrowing. “What is it?”

She smiles deviously. “Lend me a Pokemon. Your Gyarados, Houndoom, or Alakazam. Don’t worry, I won’t hurt them, steal them, or anything else. I just need a few minutes of their time.”

Meloetta moves herself between you and the champion.

She laughs again. “Oh please. Do you really think you could stop me if I wanted to take them all?”

Devon isn’t with you. She holds out a hand, waiting for a Pokeball.

“Not. Happening.” You don’t bother keeping the disdain from your voice this time. "So you can Mega Evolve Pokemon that don't even belong to you? I never implied you're a horrible trainer, just a horrible person."

“No fun.” She gives a fake, pouty frown. “It would have been so much more dramatic my way.” She reaches into her pocket and throws out a Pokeball. A beedrill appears.

You and Meloetta take a defensive stance reflexively.

“This Pokemon attacked me on my way here. I’ve interacted with it for a total of oh... five minutes.” She walks around it, eying it up and down carefully. “I don’t begrudge it. It’s territorial. It’s in it’s nature.” She turns to face you. “People have a nature too. We’re manipulators. We find out how Pokemon or other people think, and manipulate them into doing what we want.”

You say nothing, watching her. She’s moving differently now. More erratically.

“All people are horrible, Kat. Some are just better at it our role than others.” He arms go back and her head goes up. “Hnnnnnn!”

You back away a little. The Beedrill begins to glow and transform. Robin’s mom’s mouth opens wide and she breathes heavily. The Beedrill’s transformation completes. She recovers, looking disgustingly satisfied. A small drop of sweat flows down her forehead. “It’s easier the longer you know them, but I supposed you know that.”

She looks a little better than you after you transform Devon.

“Manipulation is our curse and our gift. Sometimes, we have to manipulate someone for their own good. To bring out the best of them.” She drops the empty Pokeball and crushes it under her heel, then dismisses the Mega-Beedrill with a flick of her wrist. It flies off into the night. “He’ll return to his own, more confident and stronger than ever.”

She sighs, watching it fly away. "Of course, if we weren't around, there wouldn't be a need for any of that. They wouldn't need to push themselves to be stronger. But we are, and they do."

I think she's just so cynical about the human condition that she thinks people can't 'teach' someone for the other's benefit, only indebt them to their teacher. 'Manipulation' fits better at that point.
>>
>>40547830
The thing is, she doesn't sound like she is a fucked up psycho or anything like that.
She sounds more cynical and desillusioned with the world that she just lost touch with everything else.
I'd rather try to understand where she's coming from than just go "fuck you bitch".
Its not like she's completly 'wrong' per se, humans do treat pokemon pretty shitty very often. We've seen that ourselves, and she has just seen a lot more of it than we did in the higher tournament level.
>>
>>40547661
>Something else
We should ask her why she doesn't try to let pokemon change her when she mega-evolves them, instead of changing herself.
Is she afraid she'll actually get better and have to face responsibility for all the horrible things she's done under the justification of 'humans are shit, why bother trying to improve'?
>>
>Anyone who's battled with a pokemon should know better than that, they WANT to grow, they help us become better people and we help them at the same time. I'm partly with you on that. I think she's fucked up, but I also think she honestly believes what she's saying.

Talking her out of it would be a monumental task, but maybe we can put enough chinks in her armor to have some effect later...

Though I realize this is partly proving her point about people manipulating each other for benefit. We mean well, honest!
>>
Let's challenge her for the championship right here.
>>
>>40547912
>Though I realize this is partly proving her point about people manipulating each other for benefit.
Its not like that point is wrong, people do that, usually its considered a good thing.
The issue is that somehow she thinks people having positive influence on eachother is a bad thing.
Thats what we need to get rid off.
>>
So what's the plan for when she tries to kidnap Robin?

I recommend having Raistlin Tele in, grab her, and tele out. Then just booking it the fuck outta there.
>>
>>40547944
I kinda want to do this.
>>
>>40547971
yeah. If nothing else, we should grab devon and trunks before the fight.
Trunks and Raistlin have the most "get the fuck outta dodge" potential,
and devon is our main "fuck you I'm tired of this shit"
>>
>>40547987
You want to get humiliatingly beaten by her?
>>
>>40548001
Throw that in with nibbles and levi's "motherfucker Ima level this whole city" and dan's "That tickles you bitch" and we should be good.
>>
>>40547971

Have we actually managed to get Raistlin to teleport with someone? I thought he could only teleport himself...
>>
>>40547951
Proving it to her would be difficult, since we're human and she can discredit what we say based on her logic by that alone.

I think playing the mega-evolve angle of 'merging thought processes' is the way we want to go for that. She thinks pokemon are better than humans, so why not let them teach her how to think?

She might try to fight it on the grounds that humans are better at deceiving/manipulating pokemon and can't truly learn from it, but it's a weaker argument when mind melding is literally a thing in this universe.

If she admits to the potential to be better, in any way, we can get her to accept some responsibility for fucking up Robin and her dad. Maybe see some resolution there. I'm not optimistic, and Robin'll be pissed for a good while longer, but having one less enemy to worry about would be nice.

“I don’t manipulate my Pokemon.”

She laughs, letting out one of those cute snorts that Robin usually gives. “And yet you have one of them mega-evolving.”

“Mega evolution is supposed to be the result of the trust between a trainer and their Pokemon, the bond, Pokemon aren't just tools to be used and thrown away, they're our partners, we help them rise to their best, and they do the same thing for us. Mega-evolution isn't supposed to be some twisted mime's game. Try mega-evolving by empathizing instead of mimicking. The Pokemon might actually make you a better person that way."

“Oh? I supposed you’re the expert now?” She looks nonplused. “Not satisfied with destroying my daughters drive, but now you’re lying to my face? You are good, aren't you?”

“What are you talking about?”

She glares, making your skin crawl. “Don’t play dumb. Robin is a threat, but you can wrap her around your finger. She finally flew free of her father, but you distract her away from taking the championship away from me.” She grabs your collar and pulls you close. “For the first time in her life she has drive, and you’re sapping it from her because you’re afraid of it.”

You push her away. “You’re crazy!”

“You’re just like me, Kat!” She yells. “I know you just told Meloetta whatever she wanted to hear so she’d follow you. You’ve done the same for all of your Pokemon to some degree!”

"Is that all you intend for Robin, 'Manipulating her for her own good'? Why do you have to phrase teaching someone as 'manipulating' as if it were a bad thing? Are you that afraid of weakness?"

“Semantics!” She yells. “You even phrase things just the right way to manipulate yourself.” She laughs again, except this time it’s a harsh, mocking laugh. “You can lie to me, to your Pokemon, but not yourself! Embrace it, and you’ll be so much stronger!”

You keep backing away until you’re in a run. She’s insane!

Meloetta follows closely, but you can see she’s processing the exchange. You don’t like the look on her face as she eyes you up.

You turn the corner and almost run into the old man. He’s way closer than you thought!

He leans both hands on his cane. “Hello.”

While Robins mom wants Robin to be ambitious and usurp her.
>>
>>40548270

Clearly she had some kind of epiphany or accident while she was training which allowed her to perceive the 4th wall and what lay beyond it. As such, it has shattered her mind after she realised that life is nothing but a game to beings from a higher plane.
It's the Sims, playing the Sims, playing the Sims...

>>40548328
OR she's crazy

I suppose next time when she tries to say we're lying to ourselves because we don't like the truth, we can point out she has plenty of reason to lie to herself as well.

As long as she assumes humans are irredeemable trash, she can justify her actions as inevitable and right, freeing her from recrimination and self doubt.

She keeps talking about how much power she's gained from thinking that way, after all. Wouldn't she lie to herself if it meant holding on to that power?

Isn't she just a terrified girl who's too afraid to accept what she's really done all these years?

>>
>>40548497
She isn't saying anywhere people are incapable of being nice to pokemon, just that they manipulate them for their own gain.
That doesn't mean they do it all the time.
>>
>>40548523
With the way she couches the terms, she makes it sound like it's the only reason people interact at all.
A
fter all, if we could interact in ways that didn't involve manipulation, wouldn't that mean that *gasp* we could exercise choice and make a moral stand for interacting in all those other ways and discipline ourselves so we could potentially not be shits?

If we have the ability to choose to *not* be solely manipulative, then we can acknowledge anyone who glorifies such behavior like Robin's mom to have failed people, pokemon, and society in general. Which means we aren't like her, she just wants us to be for her own benefit, ie. not needing to make amends for her issues.

“So-”

“I-”

“No no, you go first.”

“Oh, go ahead.”

Oh screw it. “Were you listening to that whole thing?”

“I couldn’t really help it.” He lifts a hand off of his cane and coughs into it. He offers you his other hand. “I’m Vernon.”

“Kat,” you shake it. “Do you want to grab a coffee or something?”

“I haven’t had a pretty young girl ask me out for a long, long time.” He smiles, but looks unsure. “You’re paying, right?”

Is he joking?

You’re still trying to get a handle on him. He’s a bit pudgy, old, unkempt, but making an effort to be polite. His pretty young girl joke didn’t really land, but it’s because he didn’t seem to have a lot of confidence behind it. “After listening to her insanity it'll be good to have somebody stable to talk to.” Is he really the old champion? “I’ll, umm, pay for your order. It’s on me.” You put a hand on his shoulder, a little embarrassed.

He immediately changes his disposition. He orders a large coffee and a half dozen muffins. He slips the muffins into his bag as soon as he gets them. You ignore it and get your own coffee, and a juice for Meloetta.

The three of you take a seat in a back booth.

"She seems rather... obsessed... Was she always like that?"

He pours a packet of sugar into his coffee and pockets the rest, but not before offering you a chance to take some first. “Truth be told, I don’t know her that well. I’ve tried to know her, but I haven’t gotten any farther in understanding her than you, probably. I battled her, once.” He sighs. “I watched the recording of it so many times I’ve lost count.”

“So why did you come here, anyway?” You help Meloetta figure out the juice straw.

He looks at you for a second, but gets embarrassed and looks away. “Dumb reasons, I suppose.”

You arch an eyebrow.

“I...I wanted to see the new generation of trainers,” he admits. “I heard this year had a lot of good ones showing up.”

You can’t help but feel a little flattered. You shake it off though. "You think being a Pokemon Champion means more than just being able to beat others, huh? That's why you got upset when she called it just a title, even more one she didn't care about."

He grunts. “Complete disrespect. For herself, her Pokemon that battled for her, and for everyone she battled against.” His shyness is going away. “It was my -life.- She acts like it’s just another tool for her sick mind games.”

Released them? You try not to be too judgmental, but you’re not sure exactly how to probe the subject.

Meloetta sips her juice contently until it runs out. She turns to you, upset. You quickly buy her another and she goes back to being absolutely thrilled with life.

"I know this is personal stuff, but before we talk more, I'd like to know why. Was it more of an impulse thing, like she got into your head with the whole 'trainers are only manipulating or using their Pokemon' thing, was she able to get into their heads instead, or did you feel like you were no longer able to take care of them?"

“It is personal,” he tells you. “But, you did buy me a coffee.” He tries to keep his tone lighter. “I guess it was the latter. I...didn’t take my loss well. I drank. A lot. I drank my money and friends away. Not my Pokemon though. They stood by me.” He stares off. “Even when they shouldn’t have. I trained hard. Collected eight badges. Trained harder. Then harder still.” He sips his coffee. “Too hard. I was as obsessed as she was. I...I wasn’t well, and my Pokemon suffered for it.”

“It sounds like you regret it.”

He doesn’t look you in the eyes. “One day, it just went too far. I realized what I was doing. I saw how they feared and resented me, even if they always obeyed and performed well. I released them. I told them that if they wanted me to, I’d catch them again.” He pours more sugar into his coffee. “Poli stayed. The others...”

You both sit in silence for a while. Meloetta even stops enjoying her juice.

“Are you saying she can’t mega-evolve?”

He grunts. “I’m saying she won’t. Not unless she changes her style.”

You again decide to change the subject. “Can you tell me about the other promising trainers?”

He laughs. “Spoiled brats, mostly. A few veterans are looking good from previous years, but they won’t make it all the way. I did see two others that I think could give you a run for your money, if that’s what you’re worried about. I don’t like ‘em though. No dedication.”

>>
>>40549829
>You gotta remember guys, he was the pokemon champ. As in, the greastest trainer ever for a bit.
Yeah, until he wasn't anymore. He lost. His time is over.
I rather rely on our own training than on his.
>>
you know, since Robin's mom claims to not care about the title, that means the wager's entirely win-win. Robin should probably offer to fight her in a normal battle instead
>>
>>40549829
>Although if you want results, Robin's mom did offer to train her...
And I still think thats a good idea, as long as Kat is around.
I'm sure her mother has a lot to teach, and considering her disposition we can at least be sure she isn't abusive to them or anything.
>>
>>40549861
But the whole point is Robin's mom doesn't think Kat should be around Robin because Kat is holding Robin back
>>
>>40549861
Thing is, if Robin's mother train her, she'll either a) Take her away from us, or b) Join our group, and do you really want her to join us?
>>
>>40549861
I dunno, she seems fairly cruel.
but yeah, she'd be a fine teacher as long as she isn't alone with Robin for it. because Robin will wind up physically or mentally broken
>>
>>40549861
No, she's just abusive to people. Like her daughter.

I don't think Robin beating her mom by training with her is worth the trauma. We won't be good enough to help her get over years of abuse if her abuser sticks around, especially when she starts to think we're forcing her onto her mom because she's not good enough for us yet.
>>
>>40549879
>But the whole point is Robin's mom doesn't think Kat should be around
She didn't make Kat not being around condition of the training. She isn't against Kat being around, she thinks Kat holds Robin back.
If she gets to train her, she can make sure(and see for herself) that Kat doesn't.
Probably take some cinvincing, but I'm fairly confident she would rather train Robin with Kat around, than not train Robin at all.

>>40549884
>she'll either a) Take her away from us, or b) Join our group, and do you really want her to join us?
a). Not necessarily, even if she would prefer it
b). I would have no issue with that.
>>
>>40549904
>We won't be good enough to help her get over years of abuse if her abuser sticks around
I think you have some pretty strange misconceptions about what Robins mom did. She didn't "abuse her for years" at all.
She left, thats it. Which fucked up Robins dad, but her Mom didn't abuse Robin at all.
And I'm pretty confident Kat can help Robin get through whatever mind games her mother has planned.
>>
>>40549675
>Suggest he train Robin

ey girl forget your mom, I found this fuckin hobo to fix your shit
>>
>>40549904
>We won't be good enough to help her get over years of abuse
....That never happened.
Like, alright, she is a cunt about it right now. But before this reunion literally the entire issue Robin had with her was abandoning her family.
Which was mostly really bad because of how her father reacted to it.
>>
>>40549926
>>40549945
True, I was mis-remembering things. I was thinking about her little meltdown before the date and crossed a few wires. I'm still not confident about letting Robin's mom anywhere near her because of that incident, though.
>>
>>40549945
Protip: It is vanishingly rare that when the parent that abandoned you as a small child comes back into your life down the road and has any kind of positive effect. Deadbeats go and stay go.
>>
>>40549978
>I'm still not confident about letting Robin's mom anywhere near her because of that incident, though.
Running away from your issues doesn't help anyone, she has to face her mother to get over them anyway. The question is just under what conditions.
And I consider it better she does it during this training, than that she falls apart when she has to face her in the league.
>>
>Everyone is concerned about Robin's training if she looses
>No one has any confidence she can win

Believe in the waifu
>>
>>40550008
The problem is that Robin might be insecure enough to start listening to her mother which is bad, because her mother is insane.
>>
>>40549675
Fuck it, let's just tell this guy about the way Robin's mom challenged her daughter in a public place and the terms if Robin loses, and see what his impression is.

>>40550029
Dude, she'd mop the floor with us, and she already knows that Robin is going to attempt being clever.
>>
Why the fuck are people actually considering letting Robin stay anywhere near her mother?
>>
>>40550033
>The problem is that Robin might be insecure enough to start listening to her mother
Not over listening to Kat. Simply not gonna happen.
She HATES her mother. Hard. She blames her for wrecking their family. She wanted to beat the league because she wanted to show her mother how worthless her title is.
Her mother isn't gonna get into her head with Kat aroun.d If they were alone for three month I might give it a chance, but no way otherwise.
>>
>>40550029
I have faith in Robin, but I am also worried because she has to beat not only her mother, but the expected narrative and Gobble's incredible ability to inflict suffering
>>
>>40550008
Only if she won't fall apart now because she isn't ready.

I don't think Robin's really considered what it would mean to meet her mom until now. If we throw her in early and she breaks, she won't make it through the league to confront her mom in the first place.

I'd rather deal with hobo guy, and trust Robin to figure out a way to improve his stuff from there. The guy spent forever obsessing about how to beat Robin's mom, and only gave up after seeing the abuse he put on his pokemon. Guy's probably got some good info.
>>
>>40550052
Why not? There isn't really a big risk to Robin over it, and there is at least the tiny chance that spending some time with her daughter might go some way to fix her fucked upness.
Which I consider it worth it, largely because I don't want Robins family to stay a wreck, if we can fix their shit we should try.

>>
>>40550029

this is someone head and shoulders stronger than her, so even though we've gotten a lot stronger since then if Robin doesn't get at least a two or three pokemon handicap, it won't even be worth calling it a fight
>>
>>40550069
>I'd rather deal with hobo guy
There is absolutely no worth to the hobo guy at all. If we don't let her mother train her, thats cool too, but then we train with her, and don't let some failure like that guy interfere with it.

>>40550098

“What’s wrong with mega-evolving?”

He shrugs. “That’s not a dig at your Houndoom. I just don’t think you should depend on it. I’ve seen some stuff in my day that would surprise you.” He takes a small, dark hair from your shirt and inspects it. “He needs more calcium though.”

You make a mental note of that. “What kind of stuff?”

“One of the toughest trainers I’ve ever seen used a Magikarp. Way faster than you’d expect, stronger too.” He leans in, “Pokemon aren’t like people. She was right about that. Their abilities are more..abstract. It’s not about size, or how much they’ve evolved.” He leans back in his chair. “There was this one kid with this Pikachu. Damndest thing I ever saw.” He regales you with stories of unevolved or under-evolved Pokemon that manage to be powerful opponents.

“But wouldn’t they be stronger if they were evolved?”

He shakes his head. “You’re not getting it. It doesn’t matter if they’re evolved or not. What matters is that individual Pokemon, and what works best for it. Instead of forcing a Pokemon into a preconceived mold, you’ve got to help them become who they are, deep inside.”

You think back on that time Clair asked how you’d react to having a Pokemon that wouldn’t evolve. You said you’d find a way to make it work. You think about your talk with Destiny and Raistlin, and how they evolved shortly after. Did you manipulate them into it without consciously meaning to?

“I know what you’re probably thinking,” he pokes you. “If this old man’s philosophy is right, how come he’s not the champ any more?”

You remain nonchalant. “I didn’t say that.”

“You didn’t have to. I’ll tell you why. I got complacent as the champion, and then I blew my shot at a rematch by pushing my Pokemon away.” He sighs. “Before I took things too far, we were a well oiled machine. I know I could have gotten the title back again. That isn’t regret or bitterness talking, I know my chance is over. I’m at peace with that.”

There’s something in his voice that sounds honest. He believes what he’s saying, at the very least.

You have to know if he’s just blowing smoke. “Think you can take me?”

He smirks. “I know I can.”

You smirk back, playfully. “So let’s battle then, old man.”

He stops you. “Wait just a second. Plenty of people get eight badges and think they’re hotshots. I’m the former champ. I held the title for half a long time. Why should I waste precious minutes of what’s left of my life mopping the floor with you in particular?” He’s giving you a harsh tone, but there’s something about his voice that isn’t very commanding. “What panties?”

He bursts into a coughing fit. You and Meloetta almost get worried before he gets control of it. He finally recovers, but you can see the surprise still in his eyes.

“I’m kidding, old man,” you don’t offer him any pity. “Tell you what. If I win, you agree to train Robin. If I lose, not only will I flash you them, you can keep a pair.”

He’s still taking a moment to recover. “Yup. Getting offered panties. This feels like back when I was the champ already.” He wheezes once more before standing up tall. “It was a joke, kid. A test.”

You lead him out the door.

“A test, huh?” You feel like he’s telling the truth, but your tone still carries a hint of sarcasm. “How’d I do?”

“Well, you didn’t cave to authority, but you didn’t tell me off either. Either you saw through it, you don’t care about that sort of thing, or you just really want to battle.” He stretches as you both head for a nice secluded spot to battle. “You gave your own alternative though. You don’t just take the options presented to you. I like that.”

This is a good spot. You head to your side of the fighting area. “See, now it sounds like you really are trying to get in my pants.”

He chuckles. “I ain’t gonna force you to hold up your side of it.” He reaches for his Pokeball with one hand whole steadying himself on his cane with another. “But you can’t hold me to training your friend if I talk to her and don’t like her, or if she doesn’t want it.”

>That’s fair. Let's battle

We haven't used Levi in a while and a powerhouse might be just what we need

this guy clearly cares about helping people master their own style of training. telling a student exactly how to train and battle is something Robin's mom'll do
>>
>>40551254
>telling a student exactly how to train and battle is something Robin's mom'll do
We have no idea how she would do it, I actually rather doubt that. She seems more like the "sink or swim" kind of teacher, thats okay with how you do it as long as it brings results.
>>
>>40551275
based on our interactions with her, she believes that her methods are the best and therefore only ones that matter
>>
>>40551275
Unless you don't measure up to her expectations. Remember, we've been a big part in helping Robin get better, yet her mom thinks we're holding her back. Probably because we care about things like 'respecting our pokemon' and 'allowing non-training tasks to take up space in your life'.
>>
>>40551340
don't forget "caring about other people"
>>
>>40551346
Well, yeah. I rolled that under 'non-training tasks', but it should probably stand on its own.

>>40551325
>Unless you don't measure up to her expectations.

Thats exactly what I wrote.

>Probably because we care about things like 'respecting our pokemon'
She is all for respecting your pokemon, she just doesn't believe most trainers do that.

> Remember, we've been a big part in helping Robin get better, yet her mom thinks we're holding her back.
I'm not really sure whats up with that, considering that it makes no sense at all, since she should know we are the reason Robin is a trainer to begin with and that she is aiming for the Champion title.

>>40551325
Not really, nowhere did she ever say Robin does it wrong after she had shown her way worked. She actively looked down on Robins dad for stiffling Robin by demanding her to do things how he wants.
>>
>>40551381
I think it highlights that her mental state is not exactly conventional. Or stable.
>>
>>40551340
>respecting our pokemon
Wait, doesn't she at least purport to respecting pokemon more than people?
>>
>>40551406
>I think it highlights that her mental state is not exactly conventional. Or stable.
"Bitches be crazy" is a pretty boring explanation, I prefer to think there is more to it. We already got one insane antagonist.
>>
>>40551399
>I'm not really sure whats up with that
She's insane.
>>
>>40551381
I'm guessing we got Robin off the ground, and now her mom wants to take over and teach Robin 'properly'.

>>40551384
Nah, we'll need something stronger than that.

Go find the Planeteers.

>>40551399
She talks about respecting pokemon, but in practice? You remember the Beedrill, right? How she 'manipulated' it into mega-evolving?
I think she believes people are so shit that it justifies abusing her pokemon, all the while pining for their purity. She's got some real cognitive dissonance going on in her life.

>>40551412
Touched on it above.
>>
>>40551412
she sees them as equals, and that she should be worth their respect. however, she also sees every living thing as tools. it doesn't really make sense, but then again she's kinda crazy
>>
>>40551442
>She talks about respecting pokemon, but in practice? You remember the Beedrill, right? How she 'manipulated' it into mega-evolving?
She didn't do anything bad to the Beedril, she caught it, made it stronger and then released it.
She just calls mega-evolution "manipulating" because she thinks thats what making someone improve themselves is.
There is no reason to assume her way of inducing mega-evolution is any different from ours, she's just better at it.

>it justifies abusing her pokemon
You keep misusing that word for cheap emotional impact, just stop that.
We have literally no indication of her "abusing" her pokemon. Just because a person does a bad thing doesn't mean she does all the bad things you can think of, because reasons.
>>
>>40551478
She manipulated you into thinking that with that display. You're already wrapped around her finger. You're a liability if we want to beat her.
>>
>>40551435
Got nothing really to do with that.
From her perspective Kat made Robin travel with her and become a trainer, just not for Robins sake.
Its not that absurd, considering thats a thing Kat actually planned to do at one point.

She might even think Kat keeps Robin just short of being able to challenge her for the championship. Which is definitly a thing she could do.

Her crazyness is definitly not in suspecting perfidy on Kats part. Its in compeltly different areas.
>>
>>40551478
>There is no reason to assume her way of inducing mega-evolution is any different from ours, she's just better at it.
she told us it was
>>
>all these people trying to "fix" the crazy perosn
It's gonna blow up. Horribly. And Robin will get hurt.
>>
>>40551531
>she told us it was
No she didn't. She just thinks mega-evolution works different from how we think it works.
She does the same thing we do, she just disagrees on what it is we do.
>>
>>40551539
You're hours too late for that discussion slowpoke.

>>
>>40551583
when it matches what we know about her, and he's completely honest with his own faults, he is fairly reliable if potentially a bit hyperbolic.
>>
>>40551478
I'm pretty sure her ability in mega evolving differs wildly from ours. The end goal is to be in sync with the pokemon. We do it from the perspective of empathy. She does it from the perspective of sociopathy. She's definitely better at it than us, since I'm sure she's a better sociopath than we're a better empath.

As to the second point, you're probably right. However, she has viewed Robin's dad worthy of respect since he got into the elite four, and we've seen what he does to get that power. We also saw how upset she was over Robin not reaching her 'full potential' under our care.

She has two separate priorities - pokemon, and power. I think she'll pick the latter over the former, every time.
>>
>>40551629
>I'm pretty sure her ability in mega evolving differs wildly from ours.
There is no reason to assume that nor any indication thats the case.
So you're pretty much just pulling stuff out of your ass.

Also, you have visibly no idea what sociopathy is and what it means, because she is clearly no sociopath.
She gives WAY too much of a shit about how pokemon and people treat eachother for that.
>>
>>40551629
more likely she'll use pokemon to gain power, and use power as an excuse to use pokemon for more power
>>
>>40551677
she actually hits most of the points on your standard sociopath checklist. the only ones she doesn't are things like criminal versatility and problematic behavior starting at an early age
>>
>>40551726
>she actually hits most of the points on your standard sociopath checklist
You have no idea what sociopathy is. She hits not a single common sign of sociopathy, except at this point the mostly informed trait of being manipulative.
She is way more emotionally reactive than sociopaths are.
>>
>>40551743
most sociopaths are very good at seeming emotionally reactive. the fact that she's contradicted her emotional response multiple times in the very few times we've interacted makes me pretty sure that none of the responses were genuine
>>
>>40551743
She flips her shit like a lightswitch man, it's an act.
>>
>>40551677
She lacks the sense of moral responsibility, certainly. For all that she claims pokemon are better and humans are trash, she doesn't actually take it upon herself to change that. She avoids the ''responsibility' part of her claims.

I'd like to argue the first point, but I'm honestly getting tired, and need to sleep. I may as well say that if you have alternative theories on how mega evolution works and how we may be similar/different from her, you can present those instead of shooting me down. I'm just trying to figure stuff out here because I like to do that in stories.
>>
>>40551762
>the fact that she's contradicted her emotional response multiple times in the very few times we've interacted
Where? Can't remember that. She has reacted to the same things similar all the time.
The only legit socipathic trait we have seen her show was being a scheming cunt.
>>
>>40551786
>she doesn't actually take it upon herself to change that
What do you want her to do? Genocide all humans?

>I may as well say that if you have alternative theories on how mega evolution works and how we may be similar/different from her, you can present those instead of shooting me down.
They aren't different at all. There it is. Its not rocket science, until we have a reason to assume it works different, we shouldn't assume it works different.
Just because she is a colossal bitch to us and her daughter, doesn't mean she can't get along perfectly fine with pokemon, and 'get' them emotionally far more easily than we do. She had lots more experience afterall.
Just because she calls it "manipulating" doesn't mean the pokemon need to see it that way.
She is visibly deluding herself as much as anyone else.
>>
>>40551743
the full checklist, according to the US Department of Psychology is
• glib and superficial charm
• grandiose (exaggeratedly high) estimation of self
• need for stimulation
• pathological lying
• cunning and manipulativeness
• lack of remorse or guilt
• shallow affect (superficial emotional responsiveness)
• callousness and lack of empathy
• parasitic lifestyle
• poor behavioral controls
• sexual promiscuity
• early behavior problems
• lack of realistic long-term goals
• impulsivity
• irresponsibility
• failure to accept responsibility for own actions
• many short-term marital relationships
• juvenile delinquency
• revocation of conditional release
• criminal versatility

Kat hits 2 or 3, hit at least 8 or so at the start of quest
Robin hits 1 or 2
Robin's mom hits at least 14 already
>>
>>40551726
>she actually hits most of the points on your standard sociopath checklist
So does Kat, actually.

Failure to conform to social norms, check
deception and repeated habitual lying, check
impulsivity,check
agressiveness and habit for phyiscal violence, check
reckless disreagrd of the safety of others,it'd be unfair to say check here, but its not wholly untrue
consistent irresponibility, not as true as it used to be
>lack of remorse and rationilizing harm to others, she did that ALL the time at the beginning of the quest
>>
>>40551867
oh yeah, Kat was borderline sociopathic at the beginning of the quest, it's been really interesting to watch her grow. I feel like Robin's mom had the opposite kind of growth to us when she went on her Pokemon adventure
>>
>>40551852
>Robin's mom hits at least 14 already
No she doesn't. What she has shown sofar under the very worst assumptioms of her behaviour. is 7.
• grandiose (exaggeratedly high) estimation of self
• cunning and manipulativeness
• lack of remorse or guilt
• callousness and lack of empathy
• poor behavioral controls
• irresponsibility
• failure to accept responsibility for own actions
>>
>>40551892
>Kat was borderline sociopathic
No she wasn't, that was the point. She had a shitty personality, assuming legitimate sociopathy from that is absurd.
You shouldn't go around excusing peoples shitty personalities with mental disorders.

>>
>>40551984

>>
>>40551895
• glib and superficial charm-our talk with her during Robin's match
• grandiose (exaggeratedly high) estimation of self-literally constantly
• need for stimulation-made sure to ask about cameras catching her bout with Robin
• pathological lying-pretty constant
• cunning and manipulativeness-again, pretty constant
• lack of remorse or guilt-for abandoning her husband and daughter. has gone a step further and claims that it is why they are strong (ties in with the grandiose estimation of self)
• shallow affect (superficial emotional responsiveness)-contradictory emotions, especially comparing our talk at the match with now
• callousness and lack of empathy-the whole 'manipulation' rant
• parasitic lifestyle-this is a stretch, but seems like the reason for her having a family
• poor behavioral controls-her ranting at the drop of a hat
• lack of realistic long-term goals
• impulsivity-wagered what is generally seen as the most important title in the region on a whim
• irresponsibility-see impulsivity
• failure to accept responsibility for own actions-see lack of remorse/guilt

>>40551967
early Kat has at least a 10, nowadays she's got like a 2 or 3 which is pretty normal for your average person
>>
>>40551989
It's well past your bedtime, kid. Go to sleep.
>>
>>40552004
>• glib and superficial charm-our talk with her during Robin's match
She wasn't charming at all there, what the hell are you talking about? We instantly disliked her.

>• need for stimulation-made sure to ask about cameras catching her bout with Robin
That is not the stimulation that is talking about, and she was clearly asking for that to put pressure on Robin and not to be on camre, she has been noted to avoid the public as Champion.

>• pathological lying-pretty constant
We have not sofar caught her telling a actual lie.

>• shallow affect (superficial emotional responsiveness)-contradictory emotions, especially comparing our talk at the match with now
You either take this or poor behavioral control, you can't claim her rant was shallow affect that she overplayed and at the same time claim it was a genuine outburst.
And her behaviour wasn't contradicting at all, we talked about completly different topics there.
>• parasitic lifestyle-this is a stretch, but seems like the reason for her having a family
Yeah, no. You know yourself thats bullshit.
>• poor behavioral controls-her ranting at the drop of a hat
Either it was shallow effect or this, you gotta decide because both doesn't work for the rant.

>• lack of realistic long-term goals
Where would that be indicated? Clearly she is capable of that, she aimed for becoming champion, and became champion. Clearly she is capable of it, even if she doesn't have super specific goals right now, that doesn't indicate she can't have any.
>• impulsivity-wagered what is generally seen as the most important title in the region on a whim
Thats not a example at all, she wagred it pretty calculated because she thinks Robin can't beat her and its enticing enough a offer to lure her into accepting this suckers bet. It was obviously planned and calculated.
>>
>>40552004

• glib and superficial charm
• grandiose (exaggeratedly high) estimation of self
• need for stimulation
• pathological lying
• cunning and manipulativeness
• parasitic lifestyle
• poor behavioral controls
• sexual promiscuity
• early behavior problems
• impulsivity

>>
>>40552134
The tone of discussion managed to actually become worse after the hiatus.
Which is fairly impressive.
>>
>>40552004
I disagree with some of those.
-Need for stimulation: not to an unhealthy degree. She mostly wants to battle strong people, which I don't think is uncommon in the world of pokemon. Lots of People want challenges.
-Pathological lying: I don't doubt that she'd lie if it suited her, but I don't think she has a pathological need to like Kat used to.
-Parasitic lifestyle: I don't think that's why she had a family. Mind you, I don't think thee was much love either, seeing how she left.
-poor behavioral control: Too minor an example to know for sure. And I think it's more along the lines of monologuing than ranting.

As for a few others, I don't know enough about those to agree or disagree with any degree of certainty.
>>
>>40552122
At the start of the quest, yeah. She's gotten better since. There was a clear effort to stop lying, for example.
>>
>>40552202
Thats why I said "from a outside perspective", many of these things aren't really stuff anyone else besides us and Kat could know aren't true anymore.
Actually Kat only scores, maybe 4 or so, if we discount stuff like juvenile delinquency, because its kinda stupid to count since she can't change it anymore.
>>
I get the feeling both sides have a point.

While we do on one hand, admittedly, have less hard evidence as to just how fucked-in-the-head Robin's mom really is, on the other her whole approach and characterisation has a really creepy undertone of "this person is disturbing on several levels".

I don't think we can justify dismissing her as totally sociopathic just yet, but I can't see approaching her as a rational individual working either.

Just IMO
>>
>>40552322
>but I can't see approaching her as a rational individual working either
Surely no one wants that.
Its not like anyone here ever suggested actually leaving her alone with Robin. Thats a awful idea unless you want to fight DarkRobin at some point.

Its mostly more, its a story. If we try to fix her fucked up worldview, Gobble won't say "no you totally never can". As long as we make a effort we definitly can, because its a story.
The question is more, do we want to invest effort into Robin having a family on the way to being more healthy, there is no way it will be a 'happy' family after all this shit anytime soon, or do we want to just sever all ties and make her a new one with just us.
>>
Ehh, looks like I'm pulling an all-nighter. Yaaaaaay.

>>40552322
I'll second this. I know I've been arguing a fair amount in this thread, but I'm also aware I'm trying to predict things on incomplete information. I can't even say some of the anons I argued against were unreasonable in attacking my logic or starting points.

The imageboard format is just bad for arguments, since they get drawn out so long, and everyone has to deal with others arguing all the time.

I'm sure most of us are trying here.
>>
something just occured to me, you know how robin wants to become the champion to hurt her mom? well it looks like her mom actually wants robin to beat her.

I think the thing robin could do that would hurt her mom the most is beat the elite four, earn the right to challenge her, and then forfeit. explain she has no interest in being champion, or working with anyone who would put up with her mother.
